Summary

The main types of ombrotrophic mire vegetation in Scotland are described with reference to selected mire sites of national importance. The range of variation is controlled by two main environmental gradients, climate and altitude. In particular the degree of oceanicity is crucial, influencing both the vegetation and the hydro-morphology of individual mires. The framework described provided the basis for selection of 31 nationally important mire sites in Scotland identified in the Nature Conservation Review in 1977. Protection of these sites has been successful, except for two sites now afforested. Current threats to Scottish peatlands mainly relate to lowland raised mires.  相似文献

A biogeographic zone with high oceanicity is a well described feature of the European Atlantic region. This oceanic zone intersects with a zone of European temperate rainforest that has received increasing conservation recognition. Although having a degree of spatial overlap, the terminology applied to these different zones is not synonymous. Temperate rainforest is one example of an oceanic system, alongside others such as blanket bog or liverwort heath. Conversely, oceanic systems provide one type of climatic setting suitable to the development of temperate rainforest, alongside other and contrasting landscapes such as the orographic climate of continental mountains. Zones of high oceanicity and temperate rainforest are both strongly represented in the British Isles, and this study examines the degree of spatial overlap in Britain for standard definitions of each. Lichen epiphyte indicators associated with zones of oceanic woodland or temperate rainforest were quantified, and subsequently tested for conservation priority Atlantic oakwoods (Annex 1 Habitat Code 91A0: old sessile oak woods with Ilex and Blechnum in the British Isles). Discrepancies between oceanic woodland and temperate rainforest led to slightly different sets of indicator species that could be applied in biodiversity and habitat quality assessments. The definition of oceanic systems appeared to include warmer and lowland situations for example in coastal Wales and south-west England. In contrast, temperate rainforest extended to cooler upland areas in north-eastern Scotland. The species indicators for oceanic and temperate rainforest were nevertheless effective in identifying sites with different conservation priorities, such as for protection or restoration.  相似文献

Summary

Seeds of 32 montane species were collected throughout northern Scotland. Germination responses, particularly the effects of chilling on breaking dormancy, were examined using a serial test incorporating single- and double-chilling treatments, alternating 20°C/10°C incubation temperatures, gibberellic acid and, for some species, nicking of the seed coat. Where practicable, any ungerminated seeds were ultimately dissected to assess their viability. Only three species had an absolute requirement for pre-chilling before seeds germinated. A further eight species required chilling to break the dormancy of 15% or more seeds; otherwise chilling generally increased the extent and rate of germination. Unusually, chilling induced dormancy in the seeds of four species whereas warm conditions induced dormancy which was not broken by subsequent chilling amongst seeds of Draba incana. Germinability and germination rates for nine species were regressed on the altitude, latitude and oceanicity of the plants' origin to assess the relative effects of chilling. These three environmental factors accounted for up to 98% of the variability in the germination parameters but few regressions attained statistical significance. Broad patterns suggest that chilling had a decreasing effect on both the extent and, rate of germination as the altitude of the seed source increased. A similar pattern, but only for germinability, was seen with respect to latitude.  相似文献

Abstract

The presence of Euphorbia hyberna L. subsp. insularis (Boiss.) Briq. in the Ligurian Apennines. — The author studies the geographical distribution and the ecology of Euphorbia hyberna L. subsp. insularis (Boiss.) Briq. in the Ligurian Apennines, where the plant occurs in several stations which are localized in two distinct areas: in the group of Mt. Dente (province of Genoa) and near the Capanne di Marcarolo (province of Alessandria). Euphorbia insularis is recorded only in Liguria, the Apuane Alps (Tuscany), Corsica and Sardinia. The climatic, edaphic, topographic and biotic characteristics of the stations in which the plant is found in Liguria are pointed out. It grows in different environmental conditions, but occurs only in localities with northerly or north easterly exposure, at altitudes between 700 and 950 m; it attains the best development in open places, like grassland and glades, where it grows profusely. On the whole, Euphorbia insularis requires a climate characterized by a strong oceanicity, i.e. by moderate temperatures, a high amount of rainfall, and a notable atmospheric humidity throughout the year. However, the plant shows no particular edaphic requirements, and its occurrence on the serpentine soils is only due to the low competition in the plant-communities of these stations. The author emphasizes the remarkable phytogeographic interest of Euphorbia insularis, which probably represents a tertiary atlantic relict and has survived in the Ligurian Apennines owing to peculiar geo-climatic conditions.  相似文献

An expanded understanding of bone physiology, as well as a growing appreciation of bisphosphonate chemistry, allowed a broadening range of clinical applications.ConclusionThe use of bisphosphonates in clinical medicine depended on a series of fortuitous events that, at the time, were “stumbles,” not unlike the discoveries of Fleming and Newton. The CO 2 fertilization hypothesis stipulates that rising atmospheric CO 2 has a positive effect on tree growth due to increasing availability of carbon. The objective of this paper is to compare the recent literature related to both field CO 2 -enriched experiments with trees and empirical dendrochronological studies detecting CO 2 fertilization effects in tree-rings. This will allow evaluation of tree growth responses to atmospheric CO 2 enrichment by combining evidence from both ecophysiology and tree-ring research. Based on considerable experimental evidence of direct CO 2 fertilization effect (increased photosynthesis, water use efficiency, and above- and belowground biomass), and predications from the interactions of enriched CO 2 with temperature, nitrogen and drought, we propose that warm, moderately drought-stressed ecosystems with an ample nitrogen supply might be the most CO 2 responsive ecosystems. Empirical tree-ring studies took the following three viewpoints on detecting CO 2 fertilization effect in tree-rings: 1) finding evidence of CO 2 fertilization effect in tree-rings, 2) attributing growth enhancement to favorable climate rather than atmospheric CO 2 enrichment, and 3) considering that tree growth enhancement might be caused by synergistic effects of several factors such as favorable climate change, CO 2 fertilization, and anthropogenic atmospheric deposition (e.g., nitrogen). At temperature-limiting sites such as high elevations, nonfindings of CO 2 fertilization evidence could be ascribed to the following possibilities: 1) cold temperatures, a short season of cambial division, and nitrogen deficiency that preclude a direct CO 2 response, 2) old trees past half of their maximum life expectancy and consequently only a small increase in biomass increment due to CO 2 fertilization effect might be diminished, 3) the elimination of age/size-related trends by statistical detrending of tree-ring series that might remove some long-term CO 2 -related trends in tree-rings, and 4) carbon partitioning and growth within a plant that is species-specific. Our review supports the atmospheric CO 2 fertilization effect hypothesis, at least in trees growing in semi-arid or arid conditions because the drought-stressed trees could benefit from increased water use efficiency to enhance growth.  相似文献

Lipid peroxidation studies often employ the use of azo initiators to produce a slow, steady source of free radicals, but the lack of initiators capable of efficiently generating radicals in lipid regions has created persistent problems in these investigations. For example, experiments with symmetrical lipophilic or symmetical hydrophilic azo initiators increasingly suggest that their initiation mechanisms in low-density lipoproteins (LDL) rely upon the presence of α-tocopherol to mediate peroxidation. We report here the synthesis and study of the new unsymmetrical azo compounds SA-1, SA-2, C-16, C-12, and C-8 that decompose over a range of convenient temperatures and improve radical generation efficiency and access to lipid compartments. The half-life for decomposition (τ1/2) of the unsymmetrical initiators at 37°C in methanol covered a range of 121 hours for SA-1, 77 hours for SA-2, and ~ 25 hours for the series C-16, C-12, and C-8. Agarose gel electrophoresis of LDL incubated with these unsymmetrical initiators supports the conclusion that the initiators associate with lipoprotein without disrupting integrity of the particle. The unsymmetical initiator C-8 when compared to symmetical hydrophilic initiator C-0 is capable of providing increased peroxidation of LDL, as monitored by formation of cholesteryl linoleate oxidation products and consumption of α-tocopherol. Efficiency of radical generation in lipophilic and hydrophilic compartments was found to be represented with the use of the radical scavenger combination α-tocopherol and uric acid, but not with the use of N,N′-Diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPPD) and uric acid. These unsymmetrical initiators, when compared to the widely used symmetrical azo initiators, provide an advantage of free radical production, lipophilic access, and constant radical generation in the investigation of lipid peroxidation in low-density lipoproteins.  相似文献

Previous theories of raised mire initiation stress the role of autogenic processes aided by climatic forcing towards increased oceanicity. Recent evidence from stratigraphic surveys in Great Britain and Ireland, however, suggests that raised mire initiation can occur under conditions of falling or fluctuating water tables. Macrofossil assemblages from the lowermost raised peat strata can indicate repeated aeration of the newly formed peat surface. A previously unexplored mechanism for the fen-bog transition is discussed. New research is needed to assess its importance since a sound understanding of the way in which raised mires first formed is important for mire rehabilitation and conservation.  相似文献

BackgroundSome case-control studies have suggested substantial increased risks of glioma in association with mobile phone use; these risks would lead to an increase in incidence over time.MethodsIncidence rates of glioma from 1995 to 2020 by age, sex, and site in New Zealand (NZ) recorded by the national cancer registry were assessed and trends analysed. Phone use was based on surveys.ResultsIn these 25 years there were 6677 incident gliomas, giving age-standardised rates (WHO world standard) of 6.04 in males, and 3.95 in females per 100,000. The use of mobile phones increased rapidly from 1990 to more than 50% of the population from about 2000, and almost all the population from 2006. The incidence of glioma from ages 10–69 has shown a small decrease over the last 25 years, during which time the use of mobile phones has become almost universal. Rates in the brain locations receiving most radiofrequency energy have also shown a small decrease. Rates at ages of 80 and over have increased.ConclusionThere is no indication of any increase related to the use of mobile phones. These results are similar to results in Australia and in many other countries. The increase in recorded incidence at ages over 80 is similar to that seen in other countries and consistent with improved diagnostic methods.  相似文献

Abstract

Cis-diammine Pt(II)- bridged bis-netropsin and oligomethylene-bridged bis-netropsin in which two monomers are linked in a tail-to-tail manner bind to the DNA oligomer with the sequence 5′-CCTATATCC-3′ in a parallel-stranded hairpin form with a stoichiometry 1:1. The difference circular dichroism (CD) spectra characteristic of binding of these ligands in the hairpin form are similar. They differ from CD patterns obtained for binding to the same duplex of another bis-netropsin in which two netropsin moieties were linked in a head-to-tail manner. This reflects the fact that tail-to-tail and head-to-tail bis-netropsins use parallel and antiparallel side-by-side motifs, respectively, for binding to DNA in the hairpin forms. The binding affinity of cis -diammine Pt(II)- bridged bis-netropsin in the hairpin form to DNA oligomers with nucleotide sequences 5′-CCTATATCC-3′ (I), 5′-CCTTAATCC-3′ (II), 5′-CCTTATTCC-3′ (III), 5′-CCTTTTTCC-3′ (IV) and 5′-CCAATTTCC-3′ (V) decreases in the order I = II > III > IV> V. The binding of oligomethylene-bridged bis-netropsin in the hairpin form follows a similar hierarchy. An opposite order of sequence preferences is observed for partially bonded monodentate binding mode of the synthetic ligand.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Capsule: Non-breeding waterbirds are more likely to respond to drone approach when in larger flocks, and responses are more likely in arable and coastal habitats than at inland lochs.

Aims: To investigate the extent to which drones are a potential source of disturbance to non-breeding waterbirds.

Methods: Using a commercially available quadcopter drone, we approached waterbird flocks of varying sizes in coastal, freshwater, and arable habitats following a standardized protocol.

Results: Waterbirds at coastal sites and in arable fields were more likely to respond to drone approach than those at inland freshwater bodies. Larger flocks were more likely to respond to drone approach and responded at a greater distance than smaller flocks.

Conclusion: Repeated drone use at coastal and arable sites with large aggregations of feeding or roosting waterbirds could cause energetically costly flight responses, increased stress, and effective loss of available habitat. At such sites, it may be beneficial to regulate recreational and commercial drone use to minimize potential disturbance effects.  相似文献

Purpose

Many consumers are transitioning away from single-use plastic products and turning to reusable alternatives. Oftentimes, this change is being made with the assumption that these alternatives have fewer environmental impacts; however, reusable products are frequently made from more environmentally intensive materials and have use phase impacts. This study used LCA to examine the GWP, water consumption, and primary nonrenewable energy use associated with reusable alternatives for single-use plastic kitchenware products and determined environmental payback periods.

Methods

The environmental impacts for each reusable alternative are calculated on the functional units of 1 use, 1 year (5 uses/week), and 5 years (5 uses/week). Payback periods are calculated for each reusable alternative and defined as the number of times a consumer must reuse an alternative in order for the environmental impact per use to be equivalent to the environmental impact for the single-use product. The research explored the sensitivity of the results to different consumer washing and reuse behaviors, as well as local conditions such as overall transportation distances and the carbon intensity of different electricity grids. Product types studied included straws (4 reusable, 2 single-use), sandwich storage (2 reusable, 3 single-use), coffee cups (3 reusable, 2 single-use), and forks (1 single-use, 3 reusable).

Results and discussion

Environmental impacts associated with the reusable alternatives were highly dependent on the use phase due to dishwashing, making payback period sensitive to washing frequency and method, and for GWP, carbon intensity of the energy grid (used for water heating). For single-use products, the material/manufacturing phase was the largest contributor to overall impacts. It was found that nine of the twelve reusable alternatives were able to breakeven in all three environmental indicators. The coffee cup product type was the only product type to have one reusable alternative, the ceramic mug, and have the shortest payback period for all three impact categories. Both the bamboo straw and beeswax wrap were unable to breakeven in any scenario due to high use phase impacts from manual washing.

Conclusions

The research found that reusable alternatives can payback the environmental impacts of GWP, water consumption, and energy use associated with their more resource intensive materials, but it is dependent on number of uses, consumer behavior, and for GWP, carbon intensity of the energy grid. A key takeaway is that consumer behavior and use patterns influence the ultimate environmental impact of reusable kitchenware products.

Some recommendations for consumers looking to reduce the overall impact of kitchenware products include the following:

Purpose

The biosphere is progressively subjected to a variety of pressures resulting from anthropogenic activities. Habitat conversion, resulting from anthropogenic land use, is considered the dominant factor driving terrestrial biodiversity loss. Hence, adequate modelling of land use impacts on biodiversity in decision-support tools, like life cycle assessment (LCA), is a priority. State-of-the-art life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) characterisation models for land use impacts on biodiversity translate natural habitat transformation and occupation into biodiversity impacts. However, the currently available models predominantly focus on total habitat loss and ignore the spatial configuration of the landscape. That is, habitat fragmentation effects are ignored in current LCIAs with the exception of one recently developed method.

Methods

Here, we review how habitat fragmentation may affect biodiversity. In addition, we investigate how land use impacts on biodiversity are currently modelled in LCIA and how missing fragmentation impacts can influence the LCIA model results. Finally, we discuss fragmentation literature to evaluate possible methods to include habitat fragmentation into advanced characterisation models.

Results and discussion

We found support in available ecological literature for the notion that habitat fragmentation is a relevant factor when assessing biodiversity loss. Moreover, there are models that capture fragmentation effects on biodiversity that have the potential to be incorporated into current LCIA characterisation models.

Conclusions and recommendations

To enhance the credibility of LCA biodiversity assessments, we suggest that available fragmentation models are adapted, expanded and subsequently incorporated into advanced LCIA characterisation models and promote further efforts to capture the remaining fragmentation effects in LCIA characterisation models.

ObjectivesDiabetes management presents a substantial burden to individuals living with the condition and their families, health care professionals, and health care systems. Although an increasing number of digital tools are available to assist with tasks such as blood glucose monitoring and insulin dose calculation, multiple persistent barriers continue to prevent their optimal use.MethodsAs a guide to creating an equitable connected digital diabetes ecosystem, we propose a roadmap with key milestones that need to be achieved along the way.ResultsDuring the Coronavirus 2019 pandemic, there was an increased use of digital tools to support diabetes care, but at the same time, the pandemic also highlighted problems of inequities in access to and use of these same technologies. Based on these observations, a connected diabetes ecosystem should incorporate and optimize the use of existing treatments and technologies, integrate tasks such as glucose monitoring, data analysis, and insulin dose calculations, and lead to improved and equitable health outcomes.ConclusionsDevelopment of this ecosystem will require overcoming multiple obstacles, including interoperability and data security concerns. However, an integrated system would optimize existing devices, technologies, and treatments to improve outcomes.  相似文献

Background: A key current issue in studies of global CO2 is the cause of the recent pronounced changes in the timing (phase) and amplitude of its annual cycle.

Aim: To use a sensitivity analysis in order to identify the most influential parameters in a new four-box diffusion model of global CO2 transport.

Methods: A new diffusion model of global atmospheric transport is developed, implemented by optimisation and used to assess the effects of oceanic, terrestrial and anthropogenic CO2 fluxes on the annual CO2 cycle. As the terrestrial phenology of living organisms in the temperate zones is identified as the central process of concern an improved phenological model for the temperate zones is proposed and used in up-scaling from plant to planet.

Results: The diffusion model is found to be able to mimic many of the features observed by the GLOBALVIEW-CO2 network, including the global trend, latitudinal gradient, and annual waveform.

Conclusions: It is concluded that, out of five rival hypotheses considered at the outset, the springtime phenology of terrestrial biomes is the dominant controller of recent changes to the annual CO2 cycle.  相似文献

Purpose

Ongoing debates focus on the role of forest-sourced bioenergy within climate mitigation efforts, due to the long rotation lengths of forest biomass. Valuing sequestration is debated due to its reversibility; however, dynamic modelling of biogenic carbon (Cbio) flows captures both negative and positive emissions. The objective of this work is to respond to the key issue of timing sequestration associated with two opposed modelling choices (historic vs. future) in the context of dynamic life cycle assessment (LCA).

Methods

The outputs of a partial-equilibrium model are used to inform prospective evaluations of the use of forest wood residues in response to an energy transition policy. Dynamic forest carbon modelling represents the carbon cycle between the atmosphere and technosphere: Cbio fixation and release through combustion and/or decay. Time-dependent characterization is used to assess the time-sensitive climate change effects. The two Cbio sequestration perspectives for bioenergy (forest biomass use) and reference (no use) scenarios are contrasted to assess (i) their temporal profiles, (ii) their climatic consequences concerning C-complete (fossil + biogenic C) vs. C-neutral (fossil C) approaches, and (iii) the implications of comparing the two approaches with dynamic LCA.

Results and discussion

Full lifetime carbon accounting confirms that Cbio entering the bioenergy system equals the Cbio leaving it in the net balance, but not within annual dynamic balances, which alter the atmospheric greenhouse gas composition. The impacts of the historic approach differed considerably from those of the future. Moreover, the “no use” scenario yielded higher forcing effects than the “bioenergy” due to the higher methane proportions. The chicken-egg dilemma arises in attributional LCA: as the forcing depends on the timing of the Cbio sequestration and its allocation to a harvest activity. A decision tree supported by case study applications provides general rules for selecting the adequate time-related modelling approach based the criteria of provision of wood and regrowth from managed and unmanaged forests, determined by the origin of biotic resources and related spheres.

Conclusions

Excluding dynamic Cbio introduces under- (future) or over- (historic) estimation of the results, misleading mitigation decisions. Further research is needed to close the gap between forest stand and landscape level, addressing issues beyond the chicken-egg dilemma and developing complete dynamic LCA studies.

PurposeTo provide normalized scatter exposure data and methods for reliable estimation of cumulative effective dose and eye-lens equivalent dose to personnel involved in fluoroscopically guided cardiac catheterization (FGCC) procedures.MethodsAn anthropomorphic phantom was placed supine on the table of a modern digital C-arm angiographic system and 17 different fluoroscopic projections commonly employed during FGCC procedures were represented. Scatter exposure rates at the waist and eye level were measured for varying exposure parameters and position in the operating room. The effect of beam field size, patient size, use of radioprotective garments and small variations in projection angulation and table height on scatter radiation was investigated.ResultsApart from the position and use of radio-protective garments, radiation burden to operators during fluoroscopic guidance was found to remarkably depend beam field size (>45% reduction if a 10 × 10 cm2 instead of 15 × 15 cm2 fluoroscopy beam is used) and patient size (>25% increased scatter for obese patients). In contrast, the variation of measured scatter exposure from a given projection was found to be <10% when the source to skin distance was altered by ±10 cm or beam angulation of a specific projection was altered by ±10°.ConclusionPresented scatter exposure data charts and methods allow for prospective and retrospective estimation of effective dose and eye-lens equivalent dose to personnel involved in any FGCC procedure. Projection specific maps of scatter exposure produced may enhance familiarization of involved medical staff to good radiation protection practice and optimization of working habits in the cardiac catheterization lab.  相似文献
