SUMMARY

A four year pre-impoundment study of the catchment of the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam was conducted. The Orange River was the major source of dissolved chemicals and suspended sediments, while the Caledon River contributed 24 and 30% respectively, and the Kraai River 9 and 8% respectively. The upper reaches of the Orange River catchment contributed mainly to the dissolved chemical and sediment loads, in contrast to the minimal contribution of the lower reaches. This was in spite of the relatively stable geological formations in the upper reaches and the erodable formations in the lower reaches. Dry-wet seasonal variations occurred in nutrient and sediment concentrations and loads, except for the Bell River where constant values were measured. The water was characterized by magnesium and bicarbonate dominance. Adsorption by the suspended sediments was dominated by calcium (potassium in the Bell River) and zinc among the trace elements. Due to its low salinity and sodium adsorption ratio, the water was suitable for irrigation. High magnesium levels made it, however, less attractive for irrigational purposes.

The phosphorus loading rate at the inflow of the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam was only 0,55 g P m?2 a?1, which was well below the 1,39 g P m?2 a?1 critical rate for eutrophic conditions, applying the Vollenweider Model. Therefore, this impoundment was classified as oligo-mesotrophic.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The concentration of chlorophyll a was measured in the warm monomictic impoundment, Itezhi-tezhi Lake ([xbar] = 2,00 mg m?3); in the small, slightly polluted Chongwe Dam ([xbar] = 11,0 mg m?3); and in the temporary Mungasiya River ([xbar] = 53,4 mg m?3). The average standing crop of the periphyton of green filamentous algae in the Chongwe River reached 28,3 mg m?2. The highest concentrations of chlorophyll ([xbar] = 69,6 mg m?2) were found in the Cyanophyta community of the extreme biotope of Longola Hot Springs.  相似文献

The observation that deposits of fine sediment are found on stream beds only in areas of slower water velocity promotes a common misunderstanding of the depositional behaviour of fine suspensoids in flowing water and a disregard for the potential for siltation effects on the biota on the surface of stones in fast flowing water. A model for deposition from turbulent water, whereby particles are lost from suspension where water currents are slowed by boundary friction, provides an explanation for silt infiltration into epilithic periphyton. Theoretically calculated deposition rates of clay sized mineral particles at low suspended concentrations (2 to 5 g m–3) were found to account for observed rates of silt accumulation in epilithic periphyton in a braided river in the South Island of New Zealand. At concentrations between 1 and 10 g m–3 of suspended mineral silt during normal flow, silt accumulation in epilithic periphyton accounted for about 50% of its dry weight. This caused a reduction in the mean organic content of the periphyton to 22% of the dry weight compared to 52% in a reference stream where the concentration of suspended mineral particles was less than 1.0 g m–3 during non-freshet flow. This reduction in proportional organic content is discussed in terms of diminished food value of the periphyton and potential interactions between periphyton and invertebrate consumers.  相似文献

The frequency and the importance of wind-induced resuspension were studied in the shallow, eutrophic Lake Arresø, Denmark (41 km2, mean depth 3 m). During storm events in autumn 1988 lake water samples were collected every 2–8 hours by an automatic sampler at a mid-lake station. The concentration of suspended solids and Tot-P was found to increase markedly. During storms up to 2 cm of the superficial sediment was resuspended, and the concentration of resuspended solids in the water column rose to 140 mg l–1. The resuspended particles had a relatively high settling velocity and on average, a relatively short residence time in the water column of 7 hours.A model which describes the concentration of resuspended solids as a function of wind velocity and of settling velocity of the resuspended particles is presented. Using additional wind velocity data from a nearby meteorological station, the model has been used to calculate the frequency of resuspension events and concentration of resuspended solids for the period from May to November 1988.These calculations show that resuspension occurred about 50% of the time. Average flux of suspended solids from the sediment to the water was 300 g m–2 d–1 and during 50% of the time lake water concentration of suspended solids was more than 32 mg l–1. A relationship between concentration of suspended solids and Secchi-depth is presented. Because of resuspension, Secchi-depth in Lake Arresø is reduced to 0.5 m.Resuspension also had a marked effect on Tot-P concentration in the lake water, and P input to the lake water being totally dominated by resuspension events.  相似文献

The supramolecular organization of the plasma membrane of apical cells in shoot filaments of the marine red alga Porphyra yezoensis Ueda (conchocelis stage) was studied in replicas of rapidly frozen and fractured cells. The protoplasmic fracture (PF) face of the plasma membrane exhibited both randomly distributed single particles (with a mean diameter of 9.2 ± 0.2 nm) and distinct linear cellulose microfibril-synthesizing terminal complexes (TCs) consisting of two or three rows of linearly arranged particles (average diameter of TC particles 9.4 plusmn; 0.3 nm). The density of the single particles of the PF face of the plasma membrane was 3000 μm?2, whereas that of the exoplasmic fracture face was 325 μm?2. TCs were observed only on the PF face. The highest density of TCs was at the apex of the cell (mean density 23.0 plusmn; 7.4 TCs μm?2 within 5 μm from the tip) and decreased rapidly from the apex to the more basal regions of the cell, dropping to near zero at 20 μm. The number of particle subunits of TCs per μm2 of the plasma membrane also decreased from the tip to the basal regions following the same gradient as that of the TC density. The length of TCs increased gradually from the tip (mean length 46.0 plusmn; 1.4 nm in the area at 0–5 μm from the tip) to the cell base (mean length 60.0 plusmn; 7.0 μm in the area at 15–20 μm). In the very tip region (0–4 μm from the apex), randomly distributed TCs but no microfibril imprints were observed, while in the region 4–9 μm from the tip microfibril imprints and TCs, both randomly distributed, occurred. Many TCs involved in the synthesis of cellulose microfibrils were associated with the ends of microfibril imprints. Our results indicate that TCs are involved in the biosynthesis, assembly, and orientation of cellulose microfibrils and that the frequency and distribution of TCs reflect tip growth (polar growth) in the apical shoot cell of Porphyra yezoensis. Polar distribution of linear TCs as “cellulose synthase” complexes within the plasma membrane of a tip cell was recorded for the first time in plants.  相似文献

A comparison was made between acridine orange (AO) and 4'6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), a highly sensitive DNA fluorescing stain, for enumerating aquatic bacteria. When water samples were processed in a darkened room and a final DAPI concentration of 0,05 μg ml ?1 was used, there was no significant difference between the population estimates obtained with AO and DAPI. With DAPI, bacteria are more easily distinguished from other particulate matter than when stained with AO. The cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa, normally fluoresced the blue colour characteristic of the DNA-DAPI complex. Frequently colonies fluoresced pink and were heavily populated by bacteria. DAPI may offer a rapid method to assess the proportion of senescing colonies in a population.  相似文献

SUMMARY

A limnological survey of the Buffelspoort Dam and its catchment between 1973 and 1975 showed that the water of the area contained extremely low concentrations of dissolved minerals and that there was no point source of nutrient supply to the dam. The anion and cation dominance in the catchment water may be summarized as HCO3 >Cl >SO4NO3 and Na+ >Mg++ >Ca++ >K+, respectively, and this water may be classified as soft bicarbonate water. The impoundment was warm monomictic and had an extensive anaerobic hypolimnion during summer stratification. Changes in water transparency were related to the seasonal fluctuation in water content and the hydrological cycle. Nutrient concentrations in the dam displayed seasonal trends which were related to stratification, hydrological events and phytoplankton activity. On the basis of its nutrient content and chlorophyll a concentrations the impoundment can be classified as mesotrophic. The further development of holiday resorts in the catchment poses a cutrophication hazard, especially if expansion results in the installation of sewage treatment plants.  相似文献

Hartbeespoort Dam is a eutrophic, warm monomictic lake with overturn occurring in April. The lake is stratified for about six months of the year and in late summer the stratification appears stable. Light penetration in the dam depends both on the inflow of turbid water as well as on the magnitude of the algal population. In summer the surface waters are often super-saturated with oxygen, whilst the hype limnion is anaerobic. The concentrations of nitrogen compounds, phosphate, Na, K, Ca, CI and SO4 are higher in waters entering the dam via the Crocodile River. Nitrogen compounds arc the primary growth-limiting nutrients for algal growth and phosphate is the secondary growth-limiting nutrient. Phosphate concentrations in the water have increased approximately a hundredfold since 1928 and NO3 ?N concentrations about threefold. The pH as well as the mineral content of the dam have also increased over the last 50 years.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The exchange of phosphorus between the bottom sediment and monimolimnion of Swartvlei, a meromictic, humic lake, was investigated during the last three months of 1980. The concentrations of oxygen, dissolved salts, phosphorus and Fe++ in the water column were monitored, and electrode potentials in the bottom mud were measured, at approximately weekly intervals. At the same time laboratory experiments were performed, using Jenkin core samples, to observe the effect of changing oxygen concentration and salinity on phosphate exchange between sediment and water, and on electrode potentials at the sediment-water interface. Phosphorus was released under unaerobic conditions at a rate of 2,5 mg P m?2 d?1 and was taken up again under aerobic conditions at 1,6 mg P m?2 d?1 These values were in agreement with existing observed data on changes in phosphate concentration.  相似文献

  • 1 Renewed batch cultures of three algivorous and one bacterivorous ciliate showed that ciliate reproductive rates increase with increasing food concentration up to an asymptote. Maximum rm values for Strobilidium gyrans, Bursaridium difficile and Euplotes eurystomus feeding on the cryptomonad alga Rhodomonas minuta were 0.87, 0.86 and 0.45 day-1, respectively, while Paramecium aurelia feeding on the bacterium Enterobactor aerogenes had an rm of 0.40 day-1. B. difficile had a food threshold (rm= 0) of 0.38 μg Cml-1 and P. aurelia had a threshold of 1.6μg Cml-1.
  • 2 The presence of suspended fine (particle size <1 μm) and coarse (particle size 1–2μm) clay suppressed the half maximum reproductive rate of the ciliate Strobilidium gyrans by up to 69% but had no effect on B. difficile, E. eurystomus or P. aurelia. Populations of ciliates unaffected by clay may be released in situations where suspended particles negatively affect their metazooplankton predators and competitors.

The large variation in size and shape in diatoms is shown by morphometric measurements of 515 benthic and pelagic diatom species from the Baltic Sea area. The largest mean cell dimension (mostly the apical axis) varied between 4.2 and 653 μm, cell surface area between 55 and 344,000 μm2, and cell volume between 21 and 14.2 × 106μm3. The shape‐related index, length to width ratio, was between 1.0 and 63.3 and the shape‐ and size‐related index, surface area to volume ratio, was between 0.02 and 3.13. Diatom community analysis by multivariate statistics is usually based on counts of a fixed number of diatom valves with species scores irrespective of cell size. This procedure underestimates the large species for two reasons. First, the importance of a species with higher cell volume is usually larger in a community. Second, larger species usually have lower abundances and their occurrence in the diatom counts is stochastic. This article shows that co‐occurring small and large diatom species can respond very differently to environmental constraints. Large epiphytic diatoms responded most to macroalgal host species and small epiphytic diatoms most to environmental conditions at the sampling site. Large epilithic diatoms responded strongly to salinity, whereas small epilithic diatoms did so less clearly. The conclusion is that different scale‐dependent responses are possible within one data set. The results from the test data also show that important ecological information from diatom data can be missed when the large species are neglected or underestimated.  相似文献

Summary

Selected limnological attributes of the Okavango Delta panhandle were measured during a brief summer survey of “open-water” habitats extending from the permanent mainstream channel, through contiguous off-channel lagoons and still backwaters, to seasonally isolated floodplain lagoon and temporary pool biotopes on the left-bank of the Okavango River at Seronga.

Wide ranges in most determinants were evident along this profile:- temperature (27–34°C); conductivity(4–12.7mS m?1); pH(5.7–9.2); transparency(0.2–>2.5 m Secchi depth); dissolved oxygen (20–220% saturation); PO4-P (61–110 μg ??1): SiO2—Si (6.9–14.0 mg ??1): NH4-N (30–44 μg ??1): chlorophyll (1.3–183 μ.g ??1). Zooplankton was variably diverse (species richness from ≥ 3 to 20), comprising both euplanktonic (Bosmina, Ceriodaphnia, Daphnia, Diaphanosoma, Moina, Mesocyclops, Thermocyclops, Tropodiaptomus) and more typical epiphytic crustacean taxa (Alona, Macrothrix, Pleuroxus), along with various rotifers (Brachionus, Hexarthra, Keratella, Trichocera) and other taxa (Arcella, Ostracoda. Chaoborus). Abundance varied widely between habitats. The littoral macrozoobenthos showed surprisingly low diversity, and was dominated by freshwater shrimps (Caridina).

Substantial allochthonous inputs to the Okavango swamps were evident from the significant concentrations of total suspended solids (7.6–12.6 mg ??1 , organic content of 33–41%) carried by the mainstream Okavango River during the survey.  相似文献

A detailed record of suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations in the benthic boundary layer (BBL) 1.5 m above an accumulation bottom and 13.5 m below the surface was obtained from frequent (30 min interval) beam attenuation measurements made with a Sea Tech transmissometer in the main basin of Lake Erken, a moderately deep (mean depth 9 m, maximum depth 21 m) dimictic lake in central Sweden. Concentrations of SPM (g m–3) were not as strongly correlated to the beam attenuation coefficient (c, [m–1]), as were concentrations of the inorganic SPM fraction. Apparently, this was caused by large optically inactive organic particles which significantly affected the measurements of SPM, but had little effect on the attenuation of light.When the water column was thermally stratified, SPM concentrations in the BBL showed a seasonal increase which was related to an increase in the thermocline depth. As the epilimnion deepened, there was also a marked increase in the occurrence of rapid and large changes in SPM concentration. After the loss of stratification, the amount of SPM and the temporal variability in its concentration was reduced. Since surface waves could not influence sediment resuspension at the depth of measurement, these data show the importance of internal waves in promoting sediment resuspension in areas of sediment accumulation. The relatively short period in each summer, when the thermocline reaches a sufficient depth to allow for resuspension over accumulation bottoms, can have important consequences for both the redistribution of lake sediments and the internal loading of phosphorus.  相似文献

Summary

The flux of dissolved inorganic nutrients (NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, SRP) and suspended particulates (particulate organic carbon POC, and particulate inorganic carbon PIC) was measured across the mouth of a small creek draining a portion of the intertidal Spartina salt marsh in the Swartkops estuary. Direct measurements of constituent concentration, the volume of water flowing into and out of the creek basin at discrete time intervals, and tidal height were made over full spring tide cycles on a two-weekly basis during a 12 month study period. Results show that the marsh acts as a sink for NH4-N, NO2-N, and NO3-N on an annual basis, but exports soluble reactive phosphate to the contiguous estuarine waters. The marsh also imports nominal amounts of suspended POC and PIC (<1.5 mm in size), but apparently exports larger detrital particles (>1.5 mm) on ebb tides to the estuary. It is concluded that the marsh retains and utilizes most of its own production and functions virtually as an independent ecosystem.  相似文献

Mesozooplankton, submergent and fringing macrophytes and particles suspended in the water column in the Sundays River estuary South Africa were analyzed for δ13C isotope ratios. Highly negative values (?28.3‰ to ?32.0‰) for the mesozooplankton species suggest the possibility of phytoplankton rather than detritus derived from macrophytes as carbon source.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The structure and summer biomass (g m?2 dry mass) of the principal aquatic macrophyte communities of the Wilderness Lakes were measured. Both emergent and submerged communities were included in the study. Productivity estimates were made by multiplying biomass by production/biomass ratios for each species. Salinity gradients in the system are described and details of the different sediment types associated with the macrophytes are given. There was considerable variation in production rates between the different water bodies often coinciding with a salinity gradient. However, rapid, natural changes in the communities are described which also influence production rates in a given water body. Production rates (g dry mass m?2 a?1) were of the order: Typha latifolia > Phragmites australis > Scirpus littoralis > Potamogeton pectinatus > Chara qlobularis > Ruppia cirrhosa. The significance of the macrophyte rates is discussed in relation to Wilderness Lakes area as a whole.  相似文献

The red alga Acrosymphton purpuriferum (J. Ag.) Sjöst. (Dumontiaceae) is a short day plant in the formation of its tetrasporangia. Tetrasporogenesis was not inhibited by 1 h night-breaks when given at any time during the long (16 h) dark period (tested at 2 h intervals). However, tetrasporogenesis was inhibited when short (8 h) main photoperiods were extended beyond the critical daylength with supplementary light periods (8 h) at an irradiance below photosynthetic compensation. The threshold irradiance below photosynthetic compensation. The threshold irradiance for inhibition of tetrasporogenesis was far lower when supplementary light periods preceded the main photoperiod than when they followed it (< 0.05 μmol.m−2. s−1 vs. 3 μmol.m−2.s−1. The threshold level also depended on the irradiance given during the main photoperiod and was higher after a main photoperiod in bright light than after one in dim light (threshold at 3 μmol.m−2.s−1 after a main photoperiod at ca. 65 μmol.m−2.s−1 vs. threshold at <0.5 μmol.m−2.s−1 after a main photoperiod at ca. 35 μmol.m−2.s−1. The spectral dependence of the response was investigated in day-extensions (supplementary light period (8 h) after main photoperiod (8 h) at 48 μmol. m−2.s−1) with narrow band coloured light. Blue light (λ= 420 nm) was most effective, with 50% inhibition at a quantum-dose of 2.3 mmol.m−2. However, yellow (λ= 563 nm) and red light (λ= 600 nm; λ= 670 nm) also caused some inhibition, with ca. 30% of the effectiveness of blue light. Only far-red light (λ= 710 nm; λ= 730 nm) was relatively ineffective with no significant inhibition of tetrasporogenesis at quantum-doses of up to 20 mmol. m−2.  相似文献

The soils of Midmar dam catchment and the sediments of the Lions river are shown to have high P-retention properties. Present conditions result in little leaching of PO4 ?4 from the soils and favour a net transport of P from overlying water to the sediments. P levels in the water are likely to remain low even if the loading rate of P were increased substantially. It is postulated however that other factors may induce a release of P from the sediments and adversely affect the load carried by the water.  相似文献
