Proteaceae are adapted to acquire P from nutrient‐impoverished soils; many function at very low leaf P levels, but are killed by P fertilization. Phosphorus toxicity develops at a remarkably low external P concentration. Previous studies have described P toxicity in Proteaceae, but the physiological basis for it remained unclear. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the physiological basis of P toxicity in Hakea prostrata R. Br. (Proteaceae). Triticum aestivum L. (Gramineae), Medicago truncatula Gaertn., Lupinus albus L. (both Fabaceae) and Hakea prostrata R.Br. were grown in solution at a range of P concentrations (0–1000 mmol P m?3), and determined net P‐uptake rates at 5 (all species) and 50 mmol P m?3 (H. prostrata only). With the exception of H. prostrata, net P‐uptake rates were fastest for plants grown without added P. Down‐regulation occurred for T. aestivum, M. truncatula and L. albus when the P concentration during growth was increased from 0 to 0.8 mmol P m?3, whereas in H. prostrata rates decreased only for plants grown at 10 mmol P m?3 or more. The leaf [P] at which P toxicity occurred in H. prostrata exceeded 10 mg g?1 dry matter, similar to that for crop species. The low capacity to reduce P uptake in response to increased supply offers a physiological explanation for the extreme sensitivity to P supply in H. prostrata, and possibly other Proteaceae.  相似文献

In benthic samples from the unchannelized Missouri River, the diatoms Nitzschia dissipata (Kütz.) Grun., N. filiformis (W.Sm.) Schütt and N. pseudofonticola Hust. were observed within the mucilage tubes of four tube-forming diatoms: Cymbella prostrata (Berk.) Cl., C. prostrata var. auerswaldii (Rabh.) Reim., Navicula tripunctata var. schizonemoides (V.H.) Patr., and Nitzschia filiformis. Microscopical observations of live and preserved specimens indicated that “invasion” by Nitzschia occurred primarily in older tubes. Data are presented on the environmental conditions in which the tube-formers and their cohabitants have been found.  相似文献

In vitro regeneration of wild groundnut species from Section Extranervosae (Arachis villosulicarpa, A. macedoi, A. retusa, A. burchellii, A. pietrarellii, A. prostrata, A. aff. prostrata and a new species) was examined for the purpose of germplasm renewal and conservation. Seeds of different ages, stored at the seed bank of CENARGEN/EMBRAPA were either inoculated on culture medium or used as a source of embryo axis and cotyledon explants. Whole seeds failed to germinate on MS either without growth regulators (MS0) or supplemented with 10 M TDZ. Embryo axes cultured on MS0 produced only single plants. In the presence of 8.8 M BAP these explants showed multi-shoot formation. Cotyledons cultured on MS supplemented with 110 M BAP developed adventitious shoots through direct organogenesis. Plant regeneration was obtained from A. villosulicarpa, A. macedoi, A. retusa, A. burchellii and A. pietrarellii both from embryo axes and cotyledons. Explants from A. prostrata and A. aff. prostrata did not produce regenerants. Rooting of shoots was induced in the presence of 5.4 M NAA. Primary plants derived from these explants were further multiplied by culturing nodal segments on MS medium plus 2.7 M NAA.  相似文献

Abstract

Melittobia australica Girault is a new record for New Zealand and from Vespula spp. In the Wellington district, M. australica was found in an embryo colony of the German wasp Vespula germanica (Fabricius) and in pupae of the mason wasp Pison spinolae Shuckard in 1980 and 1981 respectively. Melittobia was recorded in nests of P. morosum Smith in Canterbury, New Zealand in 1976 and 1977. The original sources of M. australica were considered.

The validity of the earliest record of Melittobia in a social wasp host is reconsidered. It is concluded Melittobia has been underated as a parasite of social wasps.  相似文献

Abstract

German wasps (Vespula germanica F.) and common wasps (V. vulgaris L.) both show variations in colour markings in New Zealand. Overlap in the ranges of markings of the head and thorax is limited enough for ready distinction of queens and workers of the two species. Abdominal markings overlap considerably between the species. Colour markings of males were too similar to identify the species, which were completely separated by the shape of their genitalia. The frequency of occurrence of “intermediate” markings in V. germanica populations did not increase in areas where the two species overlap. This suggests there is little or no genetic exchange between the two species.  相似文献

Abstract

Between 1977 and 1989 the social wasp Vespula germanicacolonised mainland Australia and became established in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. Accidental transport between towns is the main mechanism of spread. In many towns wasp nests have not been detected until they became widespread; therefore, eradication is difficult Successful eradication has, however, been achieved in many other towns.

Nesting places vary considerably among localities but relatively little among years at anyone locality. Peak wasp abundance occurs between January and April. Control of V. germanica nests costs Australia an estimated $600,000 (Aust. $) annually.  相似文献

Recent field work in Bolivia has resulted in the recognition of new species ofDyschoriste (Acanthaceae). These novelties are introduced here for the convenience of other taxonomists prior to the publication of a treatment of the Acanthaceae of Bolivia. Three new Bolivian and one new Argentinean species ofDyschoriste,D. axillaris, D. boliviana, D. ceciliae, andD. prostrata are described, illustrated, and compared to their closest relatives.  相似文献

In vitro propagation of an anticancerous drug synthesizing plant, Ophiorrhiza prostrata D. Don, was established through indirect somatic embryogenesis. Friable embryogenic calluses were initiated from O. prostrata leaf and internode explants on Murashige and Skoog (MS) media supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) either alone or in combination with N6-benzyladenine (BA) or kinetin (KIN). Somatic embryos were developed after subculture of the friable calluses onto half strength MS media containing 0.45 or 2.26 μM 2,4-D alone or in combination with BA or KIN. Medium supplemented with 2.26 μM 2,4-D and 2.22 μM BA was optimal, supporting the production of a mean of 5.8 globular embryos. Subculture of globular embryo-bearing calluses on half strength MS medium without growth regulators produced the highest embryo frequency, and the majority of them developing to early torpedo stage. Somatic embryos underwent maturation and converted to plantlets at high frequency (90 %) on half strength MS medium supplemented with 0.44 μM BA. Somatic embryo-derived plantlets with well-developed roots were established in field conditions with a 90 % survival rate.  相似文献

Hakea prostrata (Proteaceae) has evolved in an extremely phosphorus (P)‐limited environment. This species exhibits an exceptionally low ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and low protein and nitrogen (N) concentration in its leaves. Little is known about the N requirement of this species and its link to P metabolism, despite this being the key to understanding how it functions with a minimal P budget. H. prostrata plants were grown with various N supplies. Metabolite and elemental analyses were performed to determine its N requirement. H. prostrata maintained its organ N content and concentration at a set point, independent of a 25‐fold difference nitrate supplies. This is in sharp contrast to plants that are typically studied, which take up and store excess nitrate. Plants grown without nitrate had lower leaf chlorophyll and carotenoid concentrations, indicating N deficiency. However, H. prostrata plants at low or high nitrate availability had the same photosynthetic pigment levels and hence were not physiologically compromised by the treatments. The tight control of nitrate acquisition in H. prostrata retains protein at a very low level, which results in a low demand for rRNA and P. We surmise that the constrained nitrate acquisition is an adaptation to severely P‐impoverished soils.  相似文献

Vesicular-arbuscular (VA) mycorrhizal fungi in pure patches of coastal dune plantsElymus mollis, Wedelia prostrata andZoysia macrostachya were examined for frequency of occurrence and number of spores of VA mycorrhizal fungi over one year. Six species in three genera of VA mycorrhizal fungi were recovered. Under a patch ofE. mollis, spores ofAcaulospora sp. 1,Glomus tortuosum, Glomus sp. 1,Glomus sp. 2 andScutellospora gregaria were recovered. Spores ofGlomus spp. were most common. In a three-hour bioassay, we tested the palatability and feeding preferences of Uresiphita maorialis (kōwhai moth) for Sophora tetraptera, Sophora microphylla and Sophora prostrata. Palatability tests showed no differences among the Sophora species. Feeding preferences, on the other hand, showed that S. tetraptera and S. microphylla leaves are preferred over S. prostrata leaves. Our results support our field observations in Wellington city parks and gardens showing that S. tetraptera and S. microphylla plants frequently have higher densities of larvae than S. prostrata.  相似文献

This study compares the relative abilities of rist-instar nymphs of the german cockroach (Blattella germanica L.) and the brown-banded cockroach (Supella longipalpa F.) to survive prolonged periods of food and/or water deprivation.S. longipalpa nymphs survived significantly longer thanB. germanica nymphs when drinking water was absent, but the advantage ofS. longipalpa overB. germanica disappeared if food was also absent. These results are consistent with the hypothesis thatS. longipalpa is adapted to drier habitats than isB. germanica, and suggest thatS. longipalpa nymphs may be more capable of producing and utilizing extra metabolic water from food thanB. germanica nymphs. Evidence from the literature suggests that this species difference applies mainly to juveniles, since adults ofB. germanica andS. longipalpa do not differ in ability to withstand water deprivation, regardless of food availability.  相似文献

Salicornia europaea L. is a halophyte that often occupies the lowestand most saline (>3.5% total salt) areas of salt marshes. Atriplexprostrata Boucher is less salt tolerant than S. europaea and oftengrows in a less saline (<2.0% total salts) zone adjacent to S. europaea. The purpose of this experiment was to determine thecompetitive outcome when these two species are grown at differentsalinities to ascertain the extent salinity and competition affect plantzonation. Plants were grown in a de Wit replacement series at 85, 170,and 340 mM NaCl in half-strength Hoagland's no. 2 nutrient solution fortwo months. There was a significant effect of salt concentration,competition, and their interaction on biomass production of S. europaea plants. However, only salt concentration significantly affectedbiomass production of A. prostrata plants. Results of thisexperiment confirmed the results of other studies that demonstrated thatthe more salt tolerant species were less competitive at lower salinities. Atriplex prostrata was the better competitor at 85 mM NaCl, whereasS. europaea was the better competitor at 340 mM NaClbecause growth of A. prostrata was inhibited. At 170 mMNaCl, A. prostrata biomass production decreased more than S. europaea biomass in mixed culture.  相似文献

The chemical composition of isolated endodermal cell walls from the roots of the five monocotyledoneous species Monstera deliciosa Liebm., Iris germanica L., Allium cepa L., Aspidistra elatior Bl. and Agapanthus africanus (L.) Hoffmgg. was determined. Endodermal cell walls isolated from aerial roots of M. deliciosa were in their primary developmental state (Casparian bands). They contained large amounts of lignin (6.5% w/w) and only traces of suberin (0.5% w/w). Endodermal cell walls isolated from the other four species were in their tertiary developmental state. Lignin was still the more abundant cell wall polymer with amounts ranging from 3.8% (w/w, A. cepa) to 4.5% (w/w, I. germanica). However, compared to endodermal cell walls in their primary state of development (Casparian bands), tertiary endodermal cell walls contained significantly higher amounts of suberin, ranging from 1.8% (w/w, I. germanica) to 3.0% (w/w, A. africanus). Thus, chemical characterization of endodermal cell walls from five different species revealed that lignin was the dominant cell wall polymer in the Casparian band of M. deliciosa, whereas tertiary endodermal cell walls contained, in addition to lignin, increasing amounts of suberin (I. germanica, A. cepa, A. elatior and A. africanus). Besides the two biopolymers lignin and suberin, cell wall carbohydrates in the range of between 40 and 60% were also quantified. The sum of all cell wall compounds investigated by gas chromatography resulted in a recovery of 50–80% of the dry weight of the isolated cell wall material. Quantitative chromatographic results in combination with microscopic studies are consistent with the existence of a distinct suberin lamella and lignified tertiary wall deposits. From these data it can be concluded that the barrier properties of the endodermis towards the apoplastic transport of ions and water will increase from primary to tertiary endodermal cell walls due to their increasing amounts of suberin. To survive, an animal must respond to the environmental stimuli (Zeitgebers) precisely coinciding with a 24‐h light/dark cycle. In human habitats, both natural and artificial Zeitgebers intermingle, entraining the circadian clocks of animals. Whether a circadian clock can respond to Zeitgebers effectively is closely related to the level of adaptive competitiveness. In the present review, the German cockroach (Blattella germanica L.) is compared with the double‐striped cockroach (Blattella bisignata Brunner von Wattenwyl) and the reasons why B. germanica is a more competitive dweller than its sibling species in human habitats are discussed. For example, sensitive adjustment of circadian clocks allows a male B. germanica to coordinate itself to the changes of daily light/dark cycles more efficiently; by contrast, it takes male B. bisignata more than 3 days to adjust. In a given dark phase, male B. germanica appear more to be resistant than B. bisignata to interference from light pulses. Ovary‐dependent masking factors enable female B. germanica to take advantage of the light phase to feed or mate, during which time a female B. bisignata typically remains inert. Furthermore, the gregariousness levels, fertilization and hatching rates, as well as mating behaviours of both cockroach species are compared. All of these comparisons suggest that B. germanica surpasses B. bisignata with respect to adapting to the artificial constraints within human habitats as a result of the adoption of an integrated strategy consisting of circadian and noncircadian approaches.  相似文献

Anecdotal evidence suggests that cockroaches respond to electrical appliances or outlets. Our objectives were to determine the effect of field‐inducing sources and field attributes on attraction of German cockroaches, Blattella germanica (L.) (Blattodea: Blattellidae), and to test those parameters found effective for attraction of B. germanica for attraction of other groups of insects. In two‐choice, large‐arena experiments, significantly more female, but not nymphal, B. germanica settled in or near electrified coils with static or fluctuating electromagnetic fields produced by low‐level direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC) sources than in control coils without current. Electromagnetic fields with the magnetic, but not the electric, component of the field nulled still attracted B. germanica, suggesting that the electric component of the field may contribute to the attraction or arrestment response of B. germanica. DC‐powered coils with static electromagnetic fields also attracted/arrested brown‐banded cockroaches, Supella longipalpa (Fabricius) (Blattodea: Blattellidae), common silverfish, Lepisma saccharina (L.), firebrats, Thermobia domestica (Packard) (both Thysanura: Lepismatidae), and European earwigs, Forficula auricularia (L.) (Dermaptera: Forficulidae), but they repelled American cockroaches, Periplaneta americana (L.) (Blattodea: Blattidae). If proven in field experiments, electrified coils as trap baits may offer non‐toxic alternatives to pesticides for selective insect control in urban environments.  相似文献

One of the mechanisms of plant adaptation to combined stress under conditions of altitudinal zonation is changing the lipid fatty acid (FA) composition. The main changes in the FA composition occurred in the outer cell layers of the pericarp, but not in the parenchyma. Adaptation was found to be species‐specific. In Cydonia oblonga Mill . and Malus domestica Borkh ., the ratio of polyunsaturated 18:2 and 18:3 lipid FAs changed with increasing height, while a constitutive level of the unsaturation index (UI) and low contents of very‐long‐chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) were maintained. Mespilus germanica L. was characterized by a higher level of VLCFAs due to the high content of 20:0. The sum of VLCFAs in medlar increased by up to 16 % with changing altitude, which was accompanied by the changes in the ultrastructure of chloroplasts and a noticeable decrease in the UI. We attribute the differences in the adaptive strategies in C. oblonga, M. domestica and M. germanica to specific structural features of the pericarp peel. Despite different adaptation mechanisms, the studied species can grow equally successfully at the altitudes from 300 to 1200 m.  相似文献

昆虫肠道微生物在宿主营养代谢、生长发育、免疫以及抵御病原菌等方面具有重要作用。研究不同蛋白水平饵料饲养对德国小蠊(Blattella germanica)雄成虫肠道细菌群落组成及其功能的作用,探究德国小蠊肠道细菌对宿主营养和健康的影响,以期为发展生物防治的诱食性饵料提供理论支持。分别取连续饲喂低蛋白(LP2组:5%)、高蛋白(HP3组:65%)以及正常蛋白水平饵料(CD1组:25%)21 d的德国小蠊雄成虫,饥饿24 h后无菌条件下分离并提取肠道总基因组DNA,采用特异引物扩增细菌16S rDNA的V4可变区并进行高通量测序,分析德国小蠊肠道细菌群落组成及其功能特征。结果表明德国小蠊肠道细菌主要由拟杆菌门(Bacteroidetes)、变形菌门(Proteobacteria)、梭杆菌门(Fusobacteria)和厚壁菌门(Firmicutes)等细菌群落组成。饲喂低蛋白饵料LP2组的德国小蠊肠道细菌中拟杆菌属(Bacteroides)细菌丰度(47.44%)显著高于HP3组(23.97%)和对照CD1(7.04%)。饲喂高蛋白饵料的HP3组梭杆菌门丰度显著高于其他两组。LEfSe物种差异分析也表明HP3组德国小蠊肠道细菌中梭杆菌属(Fusobacterium)细菌与低蛋白饵料LP2组和对照CD1组有显著差异。基于Tax4Fun功能预测显示,HP3高蛋白饵料组的德国小蠊肠道细菌中与能量代谢功能相关基因的相对丰度极显著高于对照组CD1组,外源性物质代谢与降解和其他氨基酸代谢功能基因的相对丰度显著高于低蛋白LP2组。本研究结果表明饵料中蛋白质水平的差异能够显著改变德国小蠊肠道中细菌群落结构组成,并影响其代谢功能。  相似文献
