Herbertus Gray 1821, Herbetia Sweet 1827 und Herberta Gray mut. Lindh. 1875

Abstract

Conservation of Herberta Gray mute Lindb. 1875 was rejected by the ‘General Committee’ because of the existence of Herbertia Sweet 1827, a legitimate name in common usage for an Iridaceae genus. Therefore the illegitimate Herberta Gray mut. Lindb. 1875 must be abandoned. The simplest solution seems to be the return to Herbertus Gray 1821, the original legitimate name fully in accordance with the ICBN. This is possible without any further action and avoids any new combination.

Bioactivity guided isolation of antifungal compounds from the liverwort Bazzania trilobata (L.) S.F. Gray

A dichloromethane and a methanol extract of the liverwort Bazzania trilobata showed antifungal activity against the phytopathogenic fungi Botrytis cinerea, Cladosporium cucumerinum, Phythophthora infestans, Pyricularia oryzae and Septoria tritici. Bioautography on thin-layer chromatograms was used to isolate six antifungal sesquiterpenes: 5- and 7-hydroxycalamenene, drimenol, drimenal, viridiflorol, gymnomitrol and three bisbibenzyls: 6 ',8'-dichloroisoplagiochin C, isoplagiochin D and 6'-chloroisoplagiochin D. Furthermore we report the isolation of gymnomitr-8(12)-en-4-one and the new coumarin 7,8-dihydroxycoumarin-7-O-beta-D-glucuronide. Their structures have been elucidated based on extensive NMR spectral evidence.     

Isolation and characterization of lectin from the surface of Grifola frondosa (FR.) S.F. Gray mycelium

For the first time, from the surface of the dikaryotic mycelium of the xylotrophic basidiomycete Grifola frondosa 0917 a lectin has been isolated with a molecular mass of 68 +/- 1 kDa, consisting of two subunits of 33-34 kDa each. The lectin is a hydrophilic glycoprotein with the protein : glycan ratio of 3 : 1. It exhibits high affinity to native rabbit erythrocytes and to human erythrocytes of the 0 blood group, but not to trypsin-treated ones. The hemagglutination (HA) caused by lectin was not blocked by any of the 25 tested mono-, di-, and amino sugars; it was also not blocked by some of glyco derivatives. Only 13.9 microg/ml of the homogeneous preparation of a polysaccharide, a linear D-rhamnan with the structure of the repetitive component --> 2)-beta-D-Rhap-(1 --> 3)-alpha-D-Rhap-(1 --> 3)-alpha-D-Rhap-(1 --> 2)-alpha-D-Rhap-(1 --> 2)-alpha-D-Rhap-(1 --> blocked hemagglutination completely. The analysis of the amino acid composition of the lectin showed the greatest percentage of amino acids with positively charged R groups, arginine, lysine, and histidine, as well as the complete absence of sulfur-containing amino acids, cysteine, and methionine. D-glucose and D-glucosamine were detected in the carbohydrate part.     

Statistical analysis of structural and kinetic characteristics of fungal colony growth with Trichoderma viride PERS.: S.F. Gray

The mycelial colonies of Trichoderma viride were grown between two thin cellophane films for exact measurements. The results obtained testify to the fact that in a mature colony the average length of intercalary cells, the average number of intercalary cells in an internode and the average internode length are stable. At this stage of morphogenesis the mean internode length is shown to be equal to the product of the average intercalary cell length and the average number of intercalary cells in an internode. The coefficients of variation of the internode length and the number of intercalary cells in an internode are found to be equal. The length of an intercalary cell and duration of the doubling cycle of an apical cell of T. viride obey the law of Gamma distribution. According to our observations, the Gamma distribution is typical for the length and duration of the doubling cycle of any bacterial cells and cells of any multicellular organisms.
