Samples of the lichen H. physodes were collected from bark of living trees (pine, spruce, birch, alder, rowan, and willow); from the wood of these trees and of juniper; from bark of dead spruce, alder, and rowan trees; and from the moss Hypnum pallescens. Thalli of this lichen were placed onto medium with carboxylmethyl cellulose (CMC) (water being used as a control). Output of sugars was determined using the Nelson-Somogyi technique. Cellulosolytic activity of samples from the bark of pine and birch was higher than that of samples from the bark of spruce. In thalli of the lichen from wood, from moss, and from bark of living alder and rowan trees, the output of sugars on the medium with CMC was similar to that in the control. The cellulosolytic activity was revealed in samples from the lichen from bark of dead rowan and alder trees. In the lichen from spruce bark, the output of sugars on the medium with CMC was higher in samples from dead trees in comparison with living trees. The results are discussed.  相似文献

Stripping of conifer tree bark by Asian black bears (Ursus thibetanus) has been observed in parts of Japan. To identify and characterize the bears exhibiting this behavior, we performed a genetic analysis using DNA extracted from the hairs left on damaged trees. We analyzed 219 samples of bear hair collected from damaged trees at 33 sites and 64 tissue samples from captured bears as controls by using ten microsatellite DNA loci, ca. 706 bp of the mitochondrial DNA d-loop region, and the amelogenin locus. Sixteen bears were identified; some of them had damaged trees at more than one site. bark-stripping and the captured bears. Spatial autocorrelation analysis for increasing distance class revealed a significantly positive genetic correlation coefficient within 40 km among the bark-stripping bears (P < 0.05). Relatedness among the bark-stripping bears was higher than among the captured bears when the distance between bears was within 25 km. We concluded that bark-stripping behavior is associated with relatedness.  相似文献

To investigate why Grey squirrels strip bark from young trees, squirrel populations and tree quality were studied at 30 English Midland woods. In young beech and sycamore woodlands, the area of bark which Grey squirrels stripped from each tree was strongly related to the phloem width (volume per unit area) of the tree, and not to the phloem sugar content. Variation in bark-stripping between woods was strongly related to average phloem widths in each plantation. The extent of bark-stripping also correlated with juvenile squirrel density, but only in years with relatively little squirrel breeding. There was a tendency for damage to recur in previously damaged areas, in a pattern suggesting that squirrels had learned the habit. The results indicate that bark-stripping can be initiated by young squirrels, perhaps through agonistic gnawing or exploratory feeding, or by older squirrels which have learned the habit, but that severe damage occurs only where the tree phloem is suitable.  相似文献

Plant volatiles mediate host finding in insect herbivores and lead to host fidelity and habitat‐specific mating, generating premating reproductive isolation and facilitating sympatric divergence. The apple fruit moth, Argyresthia conjugella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Argyresthiidae), is a particularly suitable species to study the cues and behavioural mechanisms leading to colonization of a new host: it recurrently oviposits on the non‐host plant, apple Malus domestica Borkh. (Rosaceae), where the larvae cannot complete their development. The larval host of the apple fruit moth (Lepidoptera, Argyresthiidae), is rowan Sorbus aucuparia L. (Rosaceae). Fruit setting in rowan, however, fluctuates strongly over large areas in Scandinavia. Every 2–4 years, when too few rowanberries are available for egg laying in forests, apple fruit moth females oviposit instead on apple in nearby orchards, but not on other fruits, such as pear or plum. This poses the question of which cues mediate attraction to rowan and apple, and how apple fruit moth discriminates rowan from apple. Chemical analysis and antennal recordings showed that 11 out of 15 rowan volatiles eliciting an antennal response in A. conjugella females co‐occur in rowan and apple headspace, in a different proportion. In the field, A. conjugella was attracted to several of these plant volatiles, especially to 2‐phenyl ethanol, methyl salicylate, and decanal. Addition of anethole to 2‐phenyl ethanol had a strong synergistic effect, the 1 : 1 blend is a powerful attractant for A. conjugella males and females. These results confirm that volatiles common to both plants may account for a host switch in A. conjugella from rowan to apple. Some of the most attractive compounds, including 2‐phenyl ethanol, anethole, and decanal, which have been found in several apple cultivars, were not present in the headspace of the apple cultivar, Aroma, which is also susceptible to attack by A. conjugella. This supports the idea that the odour signal from apple is suboptimal for attraction of A. conjugella, but is nonetheless sufficient for attraction, during times when rowan is not available for egg laying.  相似文献

Non-random seed shadows are commonly seen in plant species whose seeds are dispersed by animals, in particular by birds. The behaviour of birds can influence the spatial pattern of seed dispersal and, consequently, the entire regeneration process of fleshy-fruited trees. This study examined regeneration patterns in a fleshy-fruited tree species, rowan (Sorbus aucuparia L.), growing in West Carpathian subalpine spruce forests, focussing on two problems: the temporal relationship between rowan regeneration and gap formation, and the spatial relationship between rowan regeneration and stand structure. It was found that rowan seedlings and saplings were recruited in advance of gap formation. Establishment of new rowan individuals in gaps was infrequent, but gaps enhanced their regeneration nearby under spruce canopy, where they occurred densely in a narrow belt about 15 m wide. Inside spruce stands, the highest density of young rowans was directly under crowns, especially near trunk bases. Few rowan saplings were found growing under mature rowan trees. The presence of a rowan seedling and sapling bank determines whether rowans fill spruce stand gaps. Dense rowan groves can develop mainly in extensive but slowly expanding gaps.  相似文献

The ability of the decay fungus Chondrostereum purpureum to grow within birch (Betula pendula and Betula pubescens), aspen (Populus tremula), rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) and willow (Salix caprea) stumps or root systems is unknown, although such information would be crucial in understanding its impact on the vegetative growth of broadleaved trees, their ecology and potential biocontrol. Saplings of these tree species were cut and inoculated with the fungus. After 3 months, 47, 14, 0 and 0% of birch, aspen, rowan and willow stumps, respectively, were dead, and C. purpureum was frequently present within the stumps of all species. In more than half of the birch stumps investigated, the fungus had penetrated into the roots unlike in the other tree species. Our results indicate that C. purpureum can utilize the woody material of birch better than that of other species, and that penetration into the roots is needed to kill the host.  相似文献

Ungulate overabundance can strongly alter composition and structure of forest communities through selective damage independently of the herbivory history of the recipient system. In the early 1900s, red and fallow deer (Cervus elaphus and Dama dama, respectively) were introduced to northwestern Patagonia. We studied patterns of relative habitat use, damage, and species selection by introduced deer populations in three major plant communities that have the longest history of invasion in the region. We also evaluated community structure and composition characteristics as possible explanatory factors for the observed patterns of browsing, fraying, and bark-stripping. At the species level, exotic deer browsed more than expected on two evergreen species (Austrocedrus chilensis and Schinus patagonicus) and two spiny species (Colletia hystrix and Dasyphyllum diacanthoides), while one dominant shrubland tree (Lomatia hirsuta) was selected for fraying and bark-stripping. Browsing was the more widespread damage in all plant communities, while fraying and bark-stripping occurred at low incidence. Furthermore, species identity was found as the main driver of deer damage over plant community type. Finally, variation in damage and in habitat use was explained by community structure and composition characteristics. Bark-stripping and fraying are best predicted by community composition, whereas browsing and habitat use are best predicted by structural properties including understory cover, cover of fallen logs, and tree density. The patterns of damage and the association with community structure characteristics reported here provide insight for developing management strategies.  相似文献

Studies on dietary functional responses in large herbivores are traditionally conducted by following individual animals. The method is very time-consuming, and hence, typically provides only a narrow array of forage species compositions. Here we use a range level approach to look at moose (Alces alces) selectivity for and utilization of forage species in relation to availability in both summer and winter. We compare 12 Norwegian ranges representing a large scale gradient in plant communities. The most important forage species in the diet were birches (Betula spp., comprising 43% of all trees browsed in summer and 27% in winter), rowan (Sorbus aucuparia, 25% of trees browsed in summer, 37% in winter), and bilberry (Vaccinum myrtillus, 42% of herbaceous epidermal fragments in summer feces). Selectivity for birches was positively related to its availability and negatively related to availability of rowan, Salix spp., and aspen (Populus tremula) together (all more selected for than birches). Multiple regression models including availability of several forage species were thus superior to single-species models in explaining the diet content of main forage plants. Selectivity for birches was also stronger in summer than in winter, while the opposite pattern was found for rowan. The finding is relevant for our evaluation of the quality of summer and winter ranges, and hence, their relative influence on population productivity. Our study underlines the need to incorporate species composition of available forage when quantifying dietary functional responses in selective herbivores such as moose. Furthermore, care should be taken when extrapolating data on moose diet across ranges or seasons.  相似文献

Background and Aims The defensive role of spines has previously been related to leaves, young shoots and reproductive organs. However, some woody species harbour spines on their trunks where none of those organs are present. Several explanations are plausible: they could be (1) climbing aids, (2) remnants from defence of leaves or reproductive organs during an earlier development phase, or (3) an as-yet undescribed defence. Here we investigate whether they could play a role against either bark feeding or preventing climbing animals accessing food resources in the tree canopy.MethodsWe described 31 woody species with spines on their trunk, growing in a botanical garden, to test whether morphological strategies could be identified and suggest what could be their most likely function. As testing their function is difficult experimentally for large pools of species, we performed virtual experiments to evaluate the potential roles of trunk spines against bark removal and climbing animals of different sizes. We then compared for each species and their confamilial non-spiny species the nutritional profiles of leaf, bark and reproductive organs to test whether trunk spines were associated with a nutritious organ (more likely targeted by herbivores).Key ResultsWe identified four morphological syndromes of trunk spines. Two corresponded to already known functions (anchorage for lianas and crown defence against large ground mammals), and two strategies are newly described trait syndromes with traits suggesting a defence against bark feeding and climbing mammals. By simulation, we show how each strategy could translate into defence against debarking and prevent herbivores from climbing.ConclusionsWe identified trunk spine strategies and the criteria to classify them, their most likely function and the likely feeding mode and size of animal against which different trunk spine strategies may be effective. We discuss further perspectives for testing their function and their ecological significance.  相似文献

【目的】通过分析树兰原球茎内生细菌群落组成、多样性特征和促生功能,探究树兰种子萌发相关的核心细菌类群及生物学功能。【方法】以树兰原球茎(树兰种子在树皮基质上共生萌发、在树叶基质上共生萌发、在MS1培养基上非共生萌发)和共生萌发基质(松树皮、腐熟树叶)共5个样本为研究材料,采用高通量测序技术分析不同萌发条件下原球茎内生细菌的16S rRNA基因多样性,比较分析细菌群落多样性和物种组成特征,通过传统的内生细菌分离方法获得共生萌发原球茎内生细菌菌株,并进行促生潜力评价。【结果】从5个研究样本中共获得2 735个可操作分类单元(operational taxonomic unit, OTU),属于41门453科876属,其中变形菌门(Proteobacteria)和放线菌门(Actinobacteria)为优势门。主坐标分析(principal coordinates analysis, PCoA)结果表明,树兰原球茎与萌发基质细菌群落结构存在差异,非共生萌发原球茎与在树皮基质上共生萌发原球茎内生细菌群落结构最为接近。功能预测表明,在树叶基质上共生萌发的原球茎内生细菌固氮功能显著高于其他萌发条件。通过分离培养,共获得内生细菌19株,分属12属16种,其中鞭毛膨胀芽孢杆菌(Tumebacillus flagellatus)、Bradyrhizobium cenepequi和人参腐殖土魏茨曼氏菌(Weizmannia ginsengihumi)为共生萌发原球茎共有种;韩国假单胞菌(Pseudomonaskoreensis)和 W. ginsengihumi兼具有溶磷、产吲哚乙酸(indole-3-acetic acid, IAA)和铁载体的潜在能力。【结论】在不同环境中萌发的树兰原球茎均有丰富的内生细菌群落定殖;从共生萌发原球茎中分离的内生细菌具有固氮、溶磷、产IAA和铁载体等促生功能。本研究为兰科植物种子萌发相关微生物资源挖掘及兰科植物与微生物互作研究提供科学依据。  相似文献

Fourteen species and subspecies of ixodid ticks, representing four genera, were collected from native sheep, goats, camels and cattle in Jordan. Haemaphysalis otophila was the most common species (48.1%) with Rhipicephalus sanguineus (15.3%), Boophilus kohlsi (14.4%) and Haemaphysalis sulcatus (11.6%) representing other common species among the 9,545 specimens examined.  相似文献

Abstract

The effects of reactive nitrogen species on glutathione homeostasis in human endothelial ECV 304 cells challenged by 3-morpholinosydnonimine-N-ethylcarbamide (SIN-1) or RAW 264.7 activated macrophages using a co-culture model were investigated. SIN-1 or macrophages activated by lipopolysaccharide plus interferon-gamma induced a significant glutathione decrease in ECV 304 cells. Pre-incubation of ECV 304 cells with French maritime pine bark extract containing mainly oligomeric procyanidins protected endothelial cells from activated macrophage-induced glutathione depletion. Data demonstrate that reactive nitrogen species generated with different kinetics and mechanisms impair glutathione levels in endothelial cells, and that pine bark extract significantly enhances antioxidant defenses.  相似文献

Tree-ring analyses of 23 bark-stripped trees, mostly Thuja plicata (western red cedar) but also Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (yellow cedar) and Picea sitchensis (Sitka spruce), help describe traditional Native tree-bark exploitation at a site north of Ketchikan in southeast Alaska, USA. Tree-ring samples exposed 36 cultural scars dating from between a.d. 1718 and 1912, showing that Natives landed on this hazardous stretch of Clarence Strait to take tree bark in 29 (about 15%) of the 195 years spanned by the sample. One-third of these culturally modified trees had multiple scars indicating repeated use of individual trees. The most intensive forest use occurred between 1852 and 1895, while the lack of bark scars after 1912 marks a decline in traditional Native craft. A burst of bark-stripping between 1779 and 1787 may be associated with the legendary last battle between the Stikine Tlingit of Alaska and the Tsimshian of British Columbia. The sample is compared with dated samples from British Columbia (Canada) and Washington State, USA.  相似文献

The natural history of the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is poorly understood and confounded by domestication. In nature, S. cerevisiae and its undomesticated relative S. paradoxus are usually found on the bark of oak trees, a habitat very different from wine or other human fermentations. It is unclear whether the oak trees are really the primary habitat for wild yeast, or whether this apparent association is due to biased sampling. We use culturing and high‐throughput environmental sequencing to show that S. paradoxus is a very rare member of the oak bark microbial community. We find that S. paradoxus can grow well on sterile medium made from oak bark, but that its growth is strongly suppressed when the other members of the community are present. We purified a set of twelve common fungal and bacterial species from the oak bark community and tested how each affected the growth of S. paradoxus in direct competition on oak bark medium at summer and winter temperatures, identifying both positive and negative interactions. One Pseudomonas species produces a diffusible toxin that suppresses S. paradoxus as effectively as either the whole set of twelve species together or the complete community present in nonsterilized oak medium. Conversely, one of the twelve species, Mucilaginibacter sp., had the opposite effect and promoted S. paradoxus growth at low temperatures. We conclude that, in its natural oak tree habitat, S. paradoxus is a rare species whose success depends on the much more abundant microbial species surrounding it.  相似文献

BackgroundAfrican trypanosomes are parasites mainly transmitted by tsetse flies. They cause trypanosomiasis in humans (HAT) and animals (AAT). In Chad, HAT/AAT are endemic. This study investigates the diversity and distribution of trypanosomes in Mandoul, an isolated area where a tsetse control campaign is ongoing, and Maro, an area bordering the Central African Republic (CAR) where the control had not started.Methods717 human and 540 cattle blood samples were collected, and 177 tsetse flies were caught. Trypanosomal DNA was detected using PCR targeting internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) and glycosomal glyceraldehyde-3 phosphate dehydrogenase (gGAPDH), followed by amplicon sequencing.ResultsTrypanosomal DNA was identified in 14 human samples, 227 cattle samples, and in tsetse. Besides T. b. gambiense, T. congolense was detected in human in Maro. In Mandoul, DNA from an unknown Trypanosoma sp.-129-H was detected in a human with a history of a cured HAT infection and persisting symptoms. In cattle and tsetse samples from Maro, T. godfreyi and T. grayi were detected besides the known animal pathogens, in addition to T. theileri (in cattle) and T. simiae (in tsetse). Furthermore, in Maro, evidence for additional unknown trypanosomes was obtained in tsetse. In contrast, in the Mandoul area, only T. theileri, T. simiae, and T. vivax DNA was identified in cattle. Genetic diversity was most prominent in T. vivax and T. theileri.ConclusionTsetse control activities in Mandoul reduced the tsetse population and thus the pathogenic parasites. Nevertheless, T. theileri, T. vivax, and T. simiae are frequent in cattle suggesting transmission by other insect vectors. In contrast, in Maro, transhumance to/from Central African Republic and no tsetse control may have led to the high diversity and frequency of trypanosomes observed including HAT/AAT pathogenic species. Active HAT infections stress the need to enforce monitoring and control campaigns. Additionally, the diverse trypanosome species in humans and cattle indicate the necessity to investigate the infectivity of the unknown trypanosomes regarding their zoonotic potential. Finally, this study should be widened to other trypanosome hosts to capture the whole diversity of circulating trypanosomes.  相似文献

We isolated ophiostomatoid fungi from bark beetles infesting Pinus densiflora and their galleries at 24 sites in Japan. Twenty-one ophiostomatoid fungi, including species of Ophiostoma, Grosmannia, Ceratocystiopsis, Leptographium, and Pesotum, were identified. Among these, 11 species were either newly recorded in Japan or were previously undescribed species. Some of these fungal species were isolated from several bark beetles, but other species were isolated from only a particular beetle species. Thus, it is suggested that some ophiostomatoid fungi have specific relationships with particular beetle species. In addition, fungus-beetle biplots from redundancy analysis (RDA) summarizing the effects of beetle ecological characteristics suggested that the association patterns between bark beetles and the associated fungi seemed to be related to the niches occupied by the beetles.  相似文献

Summary

A small population of birches was studied with a view to measuring the rangeof morphological variation in Betula pendula Roth, and B. pubescens Ehrh. The general morphological features of crown and bark of trees in the area indicated that both species were present. A more detailed study was made of leaf and fruit characters, accepted by other investigators as being useful in discriminating between the species. It was shown that such characters varied continuously throughout the population and no tree was wholly pubescens- like or pendula-like in all characters.

The implications of these results are discussed in relation to the situation in Glen Gairn and to the general taxonomic situation of the British birches.  相似文献

Summary The thermal properties of four different types of bark were investigated on twentyfour central European tree species using thermocouples. Tree species with white bark avoid overheating of their surface by reflection of the radiation. Species with fissured and scaly barks shade inner parts of their bark. Some tree species with fissured barks show high insulation across the bark. Smooth and thin barks show no adaptation to avoid overheating. These tree species (in central Europe e.g. Fagus sylvatica) have to form closed stands and are not able to occur in open stands as tree species with structured or white bark types.The arthropod fauna of the same bark types was studied on six tree species using three collecting methods. The microclimate on the bark determines the number per cm2 of some species, some are active during winter, and other tend to aptery and reproduce parthenogenetically. On smooth bark one species dominates, whereas a highly diverse fauna lives on fissured barks. The occurrence of species on bark is determined by the microstructure, microclimate and consistence of the epiphyts. If tree species alter within forest ecosystems the dominant species on bark will persist. Specialists of fissured barks will die out if tree species with smooth bark (Fagus sylvatica) form the central European forest.  相似文献

Summary

The mixed oak woodland on the island of Clairinsh has been left unmanaged as part of the Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve. Until 1913 the woodlands had been treated as coppice-with-standards. Between 1961 and 1986 changes in the structure and composition of the stand were recorded by means of two transects, within which individual trees and shrubs were charted and measured. Most of the stand remained closed, increasing in basal area, but decreasing in density. However, a limited number of canopy gaps formed, part-icularly as a result of the 1968 hurricane. Of the individuals present in 1961, 30% died by 1986, mortality being particularly high in smaller individuals and in birch. Recruitment was mainly confined to rowan, holly and hazel in the closed woodland, and to birch and rowan in the gaps. The changes are discussed in relation to natural processes and the history of management.  相似文献
