SUMMARY

The water retained in the Pongolo flood plain pans differs from that of the Pongolo River not only in having a higher TDS, but also in the composition of the solutes, which approximate to seawater in their equivalent ionic proportions at high concentrations. These solutes are shown to originate from very highly mineralised seepage water characteristic of soils overlying Cretaceous sediments of marine origin found elsewhere in South Africa. This feature of the soils of the flood plain precludes the use of irrigation seepage water to maintain the water levels in the pans, and stresses the need for the release of simulated floods from the Pongolo-poort Dam to flush the system if the present biological characteristics of the pans are to be maintained.  相似文献

Summary

The impacts of larvicides used in the control of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) on macroinvertebrates in the stones-in-current biotope were assessed during 8 field trials in the middle Orange River, South Africa. Two Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (B.t.i.) products (VectobacR 12AS and TeknarR HP-D) and the organophosphate temephos (AbateR 200EC) were applied at recommended and high dosages to simulate “operational” and “worst-possible” scenario's respectively. Mortality was evaluated either by direct counting of invertebrates on stones before and after application, or by ranking invertebrates on a 4-point relative abundance scale before and after application. In addition, the re-appearance of benthic invertebrate population densities after temephos application was examined.

At the recommended dosage (1.2 ppm/10 min), B.t.i. significantly reduced blackfly larval numbers (P<0.001) and those of the chironomid Rheotanytarsus fuscus Freeman (P<0.05). At high dosage (20 ppm/10 min), numbers of the filter-feeding mayfly Tricorythus discolor (Burmeister) (P<0.01) and the chironomid Cardiocladius sp. (P<0.05) were also significantly reduced. No Simulium predators were directly affected by B.t.i., but there were indications of food shortage amongst Hydropsychidae and Hirudinea.

Temephos caused significant reductions in the relative abundance of 5 taxa at 0.05 ppm, 3 to 6 taxa at 0.1 ppm, and 9 taxa at 1.0 ppm (P<0.05). “Non-target” organisms which were most affected included the chironomid R. fuscus, the mayflies Baetis glaucus Agnew and Choroterpes elegans Barnard, and the caddisflies Cheumatopsyche thomasseti Ulmer and Amphipsyche scottae Kimmins. The mayfly T. discolor was tolerant of temephos, even at high dosage (1.0 ppm/10 min). In winter, most taxa re-appeared within 19 days, and population densities were back to pre-treatment levels within 35 days.

It is concluded that good reduction of blackfly populations may be obtained with minimal direct impact on the “non-target” fauna, provided recommended dosages of temephos are not exceeded. Overdosing with temephos may result in high mortality of “non-target” organisms, including blackfly predators, and should be avoided.  相似文献

In liquid inorganic axenic cultures of Chlorococcum echinozygotum containing 20 ppm CaCl2, which was optimal for growth, motile cells were released in abundance; gametic fusion occurred commonly and the resulting zygospores reached a maximum of 31% of the total cell population. In a Sr-replaeement medium, less growth, not quite equivalent to that with 5 ppm CaCl2, occurred, and more than 99% of the cells were non-motile vegetative cells. Old Sr-replacement cultures contained much-enlarged vegetative cells which, upon transfer to fresh Sr-medium, produced entrapped motile cells equivalent in number to those produced and released upon transfer to fresh Ca-medium. Release of these entrapped cells, after their production in Sr, was induced in 4 hr by transferring them to Ca (25 ppm CaCl2).  相似文献

The insecticide Zectran decreased both respiration and photosynthesis in Oscillatoria terebriformis and Synechococcus lividus at concentrations between 0.5 and 12.5 ppm, whereas Navicula pelliculosa and Scenedesmus quadricauda were, relatively unaffected by these, same concentrations in the short-term, manometric experiments. In long-term growth experiments all 4 species exhibited a toxicity threshold between 1 and 10 ppm Zectran.  相似文献

Exposure of Parmelia chlorochroa and Collema polycarpon to 1 and 2 ppm gaseous SO2 (4-, 8-, and 12-hr fumigations) initially stimulated photosynthesis but prolonged exposure depressed it. Carbohydrate transfer decreased in both species but increased significantly after a 12-hr exposure in C. polycarpon. Interference with normal oxidation-reduction and denaturation of enzymes and membrane proteins by sulfite and bisulfite ions may account for the observed results. Increased conductivity of leachates reflected SO2-induced damage at both 1 and 2 ppm sO2.  相似文献

Marine planktonic algae are frequently exposed to metallic contaminants. Because heavy metals can be assimilated and accumulated by algal cells, they can then be transferred to higher trophic levels of food chains. We studied the effects of cadmium on protein production and the growth of the marine prasinophyte Tetraselmis gracilis (Kylin) Butcher. By means of toxicological assays, we estimated the LC50 of cadmium as 3.2 ppm and 1.8 ppm after 48 h and 96 h of exposure to this heavy metal, respectively. The growth curves and survival percentages of cell cultures in the presence of cadmium were determined, and a proportional reduction of both parameters with increasing metal concentrations was found. When chronically exposed to sublethal concentrations of cadmium, T. gracilis contained high levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, one of the main enzymes of the cell's antioxidant defense mechanism. Under these growth conditions, total SOD activity in crude extracts was increased by 41% (at 1.5 ppm) and 107% (at 3.0 ppm). Assays of SOD activity in nondenaturing polyacrylamide gels also showed a similar induction by cadmium. These results show that cadmium has potentially toxic properties since it significantly inhibited the growth of T. gracilis at low concentrations and promoted the induction of SOD activity, suggestive of an oxidative stress state. Besides being the first report of SOD in T. gracilis, this work describes experimental evidence of SOD induction by cadmium in this species.  相似文献

Summary

Katse is a new 35 km long impoundment on the Malibamatso River, a highland tributary of the Orange River in Lesotho. Two fishing surveys in 1996 yielded Barbus aeneus, Labeo capensis, Oncorhynchus mykiss and the occasional Austroglanis sclateri. Length frequency data for the first three species show modes which may represent year classes, although gillnet selectivity also plays a role. Barbus aeneus is abundant throughout the reservoir and could support a subsistence fishery. Labeo capensis is segregated by sex in the breeding season, with males remaining on the spawning grounds at the river mouths while females visit the spawning grounds for a short time to shed their eggs. The absence of small-sized Oncorhynchus mykiss in the catch may be due to pollution from mining and construction affecting the spawning grounds. The catches of larger trout and the outstanding scenery suggest that a tourist sport fishery could be developed on the reservoir based on natural recruitment supplemented, if necessary, by stocking hatchery-reared fish. As the three species are potamodromous, subsistence fishing zones will need to be clearly demarcated to prevent fishing in the vulnerable river mouth areas.  相似文献

Algae were sampled along temperature gradients of 30 thermal springs in Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. From a maximum temperature of 74.5 C downstream, to ca. 62 C, the diversity of the algae was limited to the various forms of Synechococcus lividus Copeland; from ca. 62 to 40–45 C it coexisted with other algae. When S. lividus was in direct sunlight the mean length was greatest at the highest temperatures of its existence, becoming shorter as the water cooled; the mean reduction in length was 0.132 μm for each 1 C reduction in temperature. The cells in a shaded stream did not exhibit the reduction in size with reduced temperature, but remained about the same length from 73 C downstream to 45 C. The longer cells from the highest temperatures of their existence in any stream could not become established in the cooler water downstream, so the range of cell lengths (diversity) became less as the water cooled. Unknown dissolved substance(s) depressed the upper temperature limit in two streams and had a reverse effect on the expected length–temperature relationship; the shortest cells were at the higher temperatures. Generally, total dissolved substances had a positive effect on the length; the longest cells were in the water with the highest total dissolved solids (TDS) at the upper temperature limits of 70–74.5 C. In the temperature range of 55–60 C the higher TDS were not as effective in developing longer cells.  相似文献

Abstract

Millettia pachycarpa (Bentham), a perennial climbing tree, found endemic in north-east India used by tribes for treating various ailments. To ascertain the potential of M. pachycarpa for pest management, the present investigation was formulated against a polyphagous pest, Spodoptera litura (Fabricius). Growth inhibitory activity of various extracts and extract fractions was evaluated against third instar larvae of S. litura through topical as well as diet incorporation method. It was observed that dichloromethane extract showed very good growth inhibition in both topical (GI50 7.77?ppm) and diet incorporation methods (GI50< 5?ppm). The growth inhibitory potential of this plant is also demonstrated by the presence of various abnormalities and reduction in larval and pupal weight.  相似文献

Cinnzeylanine (1) and cinnzeylanol (2) were isolated from barks of Cinnamonum zeylanicum Nees (ceylon cinnamon). Chemical properties and NMR spectra of the both compounds are disccused in terms of their structures which were determined by the X-ray analysis and chemical reactions. When administered orally with artificial diet, both 1 and 2 killed larvae of silkworm, Bombyx mori L. at a dose of 16 ppm and inhibited larval ecdysis at 2~ 4 ppm.  相似文献

The ethyl acetate extract of the Bacillus sp. EJ-121 culture broth exhibited growth inhibitory activity on a lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seedlings assay. Bacillus sp. EJ-121 was identified as Bacillus cereus by the morphological characteristic and nucleotide sequence of the 16S rDNA. The bioassay-guided fractionation of the ethyl acetate extract led to the isolation of two compounds. Their structures were deduced by spectroscopic methods and determined as sodium vanillate (1) and 2-aminobenzoic acid (2). Both compounds 1 and 2 inhibited more than 90% of root length at 50 ppm (0.26 and 0.36 mM, respectively) while they had a limited effect on shoot growth at the same concentration level. Roots and shoots of lettuce seedlings showed severe deterioration at 100 ppm. In order to study the fundamental structure–activity relationship, several structurally related benzoic acid derivatives were also assayed. The existence of a polar carboxyl moiety seemed to be responsible for the stronger activity.  相似文献

A new γ-ray-radiation dosimetric system (TDS-HMTA), comprising a 'total dissolved solids (TDS)' meter and 0.02 M aqueous hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) solution, is introduced for medical and biological applications. Gamma-ray radiolysis of aqueous HTMA solutions increases the concentrations (ppm) of TDS, which is measured by the TDS meter. The effects of HMTA concentration, absorbed radiation dose, absorbed dose rate, and storage time on the TDS concentration of irradiated HMTA solutions were studied. It was found that 0.02 M aqueous HMTA solution yields the highest sensitivity to γ-ray-radiation according to TDS concentration measurements. The effect of absorbed radiation dose was studied in the range 1.64–435.5 kGy. The TDS concentration increases linearly up to the maximum of the studied absorbed radiation dose range (R2 = 0.9965). The overall coefficient of variation (CV %) associated with TDS concentration measurements of 0.02 M HMTA solution as a function of absorbed dose was found to be 0.732%. The effect of dose rate on the TDS concentration was studied in the range 0.33–3.31 kGy/h. It was found, also, that the TDS concentration is relatively stable over a storage period of 144 h after irradiation with different doses. The tissue equivalency of 0.02 M aqueous HMTA solutions allow it to be used for radiation dose measurement during sterilization in human tissue banks. Therefore, this system (TDS–HMTA) could be considered as a promising candidate for γ-ray radiation dosimetry in technical, medical and research fields.  相似文献

The North Fork Holston River (NFHR) below Saltville, Virginia, has been the subject of many studies due to years of contamination from a closed chloroalkali plant. In addition, a point source brine discharge high in total dissolved solids (TDS) may also be adversely affecting aquatic biota. This study assessed the toxicity of the brine discharge to selected test organisms, including two freshwater mussel species and also discusses implications for development of a TDS limit based on brine toxicity. Ceriodaphnia dubia was the most sensitive organism in acute and chronic brine toxicity tests. Bivariate analysis of the brine conductivity and C. dubia LC50 values showed no relationship (p = .1756); however, LC50 values were strongly related (r2 = 0.8818) to sodium concentrations in the brine discharge. A comparison of the results from acute tests with the brine effluent and the reference toxicant sodium chloride (NaCl) demonstrated that organisms were more sensitive to NaCl. Brine discharge toxicity to C. dubia was variable during the study duration with toxicity determined to be dependent on specific TDS constituents rather than conductivity or TDS. These results suggest the need for site-specific development of TDS criteria that are based on the specific constituents in a discharge.  相似文献

Summary

A temporary pool in a dry stream bed traversing Grootvloer Pan in the Northern Cape was inhabited by fifteen branchiopod and calanoid copepod crustacean species. There was an unusually high number of congeneric species in the pool; in the class Branchiopoda, five Streptocephalus species and four Daphnia species were collected. In addition, two species of the calanoid genus Metadiaptomus were identified. The high species richness was not related to habitat diversity, pool size or difference in body size of each species. Three species (Streptocephalus purcelli, S. gracilis and Metadiaptomus capensis) had previously been collected only from the winter-rainfall areas of the Cape. Episodic flooding in the Northern Cape in 1988 may have resulted in the unusual community in the Grootvloer temporary pool.  相似文献

SUMMARY

Data are presented on the occurrence of a surprising number of permanent water sources on the gravel plains of the Namib-Naukluft Park, South West Africa. As a consequence, no game animal is further than ca 25 km away from the nearest watering-place. Within a broad range of ionic contents, the surface waters of the desert display a marked similarity in their chemical composition, being mainly dominated by Na+>Ca++>Mg++: Cl?>SO4 ?>HCO3 ??CO3- ?. Evaporation, precipitation and rock dominance seem to be the main controlling mechanisms involved in determining the chemical composition of the waters.  相似文献

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of increasing CO2 concentration on the growth and the capability of Tetraselmis chui. in removal of nitrate, ammonium and phosphate from shrimp pond wastewater (SPWW). The factorial experimental design was used with the treatment of SPWW percentage in culture medium, namely: 100% SPWW, 75% SPWW + 25% Sea Water (SW) and 75% SW + 25% SPWW coupled with three CO2 concentration treatments: 390?ppm, 550?ppm and 1000?ppm using CO2 system. Growth of T. chui. for lengh of cultivation period tended to be higher at treatments of 390?ppm CO2 and 100% SPWW, however there was a declining growth over period of cultivation for both treatments. The growth rate of T. chui was higher for all percentage of SPWW treatments in culture medium at 390?ppm CO2 concentration compared to other percentage of SPWW treatments and CO2 concentration treatments. There was a decreasing of growth rate with increasing CO2 concentration at 100% SPWW and 75% SPWW + 25% SW in culture medium. Nitrogen removal efficiency and removal rate by T. chui. were strongly affected by CO2 concentration. However, there was no significant effect of increasing CO2 concentration to removal efficiency and rate of PO4 by T. chui.  相似文献

A bioluminescence assay was developed using the expression of the luxAB genes in Pseudomonas veronii to allow the efficacy of biocides incorporated into plasticised polyvinylchloride (pPVC) to be determined in situ. A maximum number of cells was found to adhere to the surface after 18 h as measured by bioluminescence, radiolabelling and viable cell counts. A positive correlation was found between the level of bioluminescence and numbers of viable cells attached to the pPVC. When the biocide 10, 10-oxybisphenoxyarsine (OBPA) was incorporated into the pPVC, both bioluminescence and viable cell number were reduced by ca 60% at a concentration of 750 ppm and by >99% at 2250 ppm. When the biocide 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-4-(methylsulphonyl)pyridine (TCMP) was incorporated into the pPVC, no reduction in viability or bioluminescence was seen after 18 h. However, over a period of 72 h at a concentration of 2250 ppm TCMP, both viable cell number and bioluminescence decreased steadily after 36 h until after 72 h, both bioluminescence and viable cell counts were less than 1% of the initial values. The viability of attached cells can therefore be measured in situ in a sensitive real-time assay by measuring bioluminescence allowing the efficacy of biocides incorporated into plastics to be compared.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The occurrence of a ventral sucker-like mouth form in certain populations of Labeo umbratus, which are free from competition by L. aapensis, is reported. It is proposed that this might be an adaptation to feeding off stones which enhances the fish's changes of survival. If this is so, the absense of mouth form variation in Orange River populations illustrates the force of interspecific competition with L. capensis.  相似文献
