ABSTRACT

Background: Hybridisation can be a threat for the survival of a rare species because, in the case of insufficient numbers of appropriate mates, a rare form is much more likely to cross with a widespread taxon.

Aims: In the present study, we tested hypotheses concerning the level of hybridisation between endangered Betula humilis and its widespread congeners: B. pendula and B. pubescens as a function of habitat conditions.

Methods: We genotyped 312 individuals of three species using AFLP markers. B. humilis specimens were sampled in populations with low and high groundwater levels. Morphological identification of B. pubescens and B. pendula was verified using the Atkinson discriminant function.

Results: Altogether, 15 individuals (4.8%) were indicated as putative hybrids. The B. humilis hybrids were found in dry habitats and they could be classified as F1 or F2 generation. Tree hybrids could represent backcrosses to either B. pendula or B. pubescens.

Conclusions: Genetic analyses contradicted the idea that hybridisation between B. humilis and its close relatives was extensive. On the other hand, the presence of introgressed individuals in the populations in areas with low groundwater levels implied that pollen swamping might be a threat for declining B. humilis stands.  相似文献

Summary Defence-related epithelial structures of juvenile stems and their phytochemistry were compared between six woody species of Betula from different geographical areas. The shoots of B. pendula, B. papyrifera, B. platypylla and B. ermanii are covered by resin droplets secreted by multicellular peltate glands. The seedlings of B. papyrifera and B. pubescens are covered with long epithelial hairs. Closer topical examination also revealed smaller glands on B. papyrifera and B. pubescens. The glands of B. ermanii are oval while the other species have a round shape. Phenol-specific histochemical staining indicated phenolic compounds in the cells in active glands of the resinous birches, but not in those of the pubescent birches. The epithelial hairs were strongly positive to the phenol stain. Analysis of the triterpenoids (3- and 3-papyriferic acid and pendulic acid) and a phenolic (platyphylloside) deterrent indicated that the morphological differences are accompanied by chemical ones. Pendulic acid was the main triterpene in B. ermanii instead of the 3-papyriferic acid of the other resinous species. Concentrations of the triterpenes ranged from about 0.3 to 12 mg/g, while the platyphylloside level was around 0.5 mg/g in all of them. Some triterpenes were also detected in B. papyrifera, but none in B. pubescens. The former contained only about 0.05 mg/g of platyphylloside, but B. pubescens contained 4 mg/g of this compound.  相似文献

Betula fruits lacking their wings were recovered from the Gross Todtshorn borehole, Germany, covering the late Eemian interglacial, the Early Weichselian, and the Weichselian pleniglacial. In order to identify them, a data-set of seven size and shape variables was made from modern fruits of B. pubescens, B. pendula, B. nana, and B. humilis. These measurements were summarised by principal components analysis (PCA). The 140 measured fossil fruit-bodies were positioned passively on the PCA plot and identified by comparison with the dimensional envelopes of the modern species. Tree birches (B. pendula, B. pubescens) occurred in the Eemian and Early Weichselian interstadials, but not thereafter.B. nana was widespread during the intervening stadials and the Oerel interstadial. B. humilis occurred throughout the sequence, coexisting with tree birches in the Early Weichselian and with B. nana in the stadials. It usually grew on mire surfaces, in contrast to B. nana which mainly grew on mineral substrates. However, B. nana grew on peat with B. humilis in the pleniglacial Oerel interstadial, suggesting a more continental climate with cold winters. A modern analogue could be near the Ural mountains. B. humilis is presently rare in central Europe, but during the Weichselian it was well established in northern Germany. The PCA has enabled specific determination of the wingless Betula fruits, leading to vegetational and climatic reconstructions and contributing to the previously poorly known historical biogeography of Betula humilis. Summary

Leaf-shape comparisons were made between individual trees in a mixed wood containing B. pendula and B. pubescens, and two relatively pure stands. Data sets were subjected to analysis of variance, principal components and discriminant analyses in order to study within-tree variation, variation within each species and the relationships between them. Within-tree variation was found to be much less than that between trees and principal component analysis provided a separation of the material into species groups and indicated extensive variation within them. The employment of a discriminant function sharpened the separation of the pure woods and pointed to the occurrence of possible hybrids and back-crossed individuals within the mixed wood. The findings indicate that gene flow probably proceeds from the diploid to the tetraploid level.  相似文献

Morphometric parameters of mature leaves (area, venation density, and shape coefficient) and trunks (size and biomass) of two edificatory birch species, Betula pendula Roth and B. pubescens Ehrh., were characterized. These species inhabit a 1600-km transect of the Urals, from forest-tundra to forest-steppe. In both species, the highest trunk biomass was observed in the subzone of south taiga. Trunk parameters and leaf sizes of B. pendula varied in a narrower range than in B. pubescens. As distinct from leaf shape, leaf size was correlated with the average multiyear climate characteristics but not with the weather during a given growth season. In B. pubescens, which range extends wide from its climatic optimum, leaf area was positively correlated with trunk biomass. In B. pendula, growing mainly within the area of its climatic optimum, such correlation was not observed. We concluded that such parameter as mature leaf size could be used for prediction of tree productivity growing outside of the zone of their climatic optimum.  相似文献

Summary

Measurements of the net photosynthesis and dark respiration rates of excised twigs from Betula pubescens Ehrh. subsp. odorata (Bechst.) Warburg and B. pendula Roth, at different light intensities were made using infra-red gas analysis. B. pubescens appears to possess leaves which on the basis of physiological responses can be described as sun and shade leaves. In the more open canopy of B. pendula differences between leaf types are less pronounced. The presence of sun and shade leaves is suggested as a means whereby the net assimilation rate of the shrubby growth form of B. pubescens can be increased. This type of mechanism becomes increasingly important at high altitudes and latitudes.  相似文献

The morphological, biochemical, and physiological characteristics of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth), curly birch (B. pendula Roth var. carelica), and downy birch (B. pubescens Ehrh.) at early stages of ontogenesis in natural conditions were investigated. Some intra- and interspecific peculiarities of the morphophysiological properties were determined. Priority development of the underground mass for the seedlings of curly birch and that of the aboveground mass for the seedlings of silver birch and downy birch were found. The leaf of curly birch is developed more actively as compared with those in the other two species under equal potential possibility of the growth of their leaves by elongation. A high similarity of the mineral composition (C, N, P, K) of different forms and species of birches was demonstrated. For silver birch the maximum values of the stomatal conductance, rate of photosynthesis, and transpiration under similar atmospheric and soil conditions were obtained. In downy birch we found a higher efficiency of water use. The highest values of the maximum rate of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase carboxylation were found in curly birch. This may serve as an indicator of its shade tolerance, as compared with silver birch and downy birch.  相似文献

The Fennoscandian birch population primarily consists of Betula nana, B. pendula and B. pubescens ssp. czerepanovii, the Mountain birch. Frequent hybridization between the Mountain birch and B. nana generates a wide range of genotypic and phenotypic plasticity in the subarctic birch zone of Fennoscandia. Phases of subarctic conditions prevailed during the Late Glacial in large parts of NW Europe, and palynological as well as macrofossil analysis provide some evidence for the occurrence of birch hybrids during these intervals. Leaves from genetically controlled specimens of Betula pendula, B. pubescens ssp. czerepanovii, B. nana and the hybrids B. pubescens ssp. czerepanovii × nana and B. nana × pubescens ssp. czerepanovii are investigated for their specific characteristics of the epidermis morphology. Frequency and size of epidermal cells and stomata reveal a close affinity of both hybrids to B. nana and allow a differentiation of the intermediate forms between B. nana and the Mountain birch. With respect to palaeoatmospheric CO2 reconstructions based on stomatal index, epidermal analysis shows that a possible occurrence of hybrids in fossil leaf assemblages has no profound consequences for combined species records. However, the significant differences observed in B. nana demand the separation of this species. A comparison of the cuticle properties of B. pendula and B. pubescens from Finnish Lapland and leaf material from The Netherlands reveals a divergence of the stomatal index that may be due to differences in day light length.  相似文献

Past reproductive interactions among incompletely isolated species may leave behind a trail of introgressed alleles, shedding light on historical range movements. Betula pubescens is a widespread native tetraploid tree species in Britain, occupying habitats intermediate to those of its native diploid relatives, B. pendula and B. nana. Genotyping 1134 trees from the three species at 12 microsatellite loci, we found evidence of introgression from both diploid species into B. pubescens, despite the ploidy difference. Surprisingly, introgression from B. nana, a dwarf species whose present range is highly restricted in northern, high‐altitude peat bogs, was greater than introgression from B. pendula, which is morphologically similar to B. pubescens and has a substantially overlapping range. A cline of introgression from B. nana was found extending into B. pubescens populations far to the south of the current B. nana range. We suggest that this genetic pattern is a footprint of a historical decline and/or northwards shift in the range of B. nana populations due to climate warming in the Holocene. This is consistent with pollen records that show a broader, more southerly distribution of B. nana in the past. Ecological niche modelling predicts that B. nana is adapted to a larger range than it currently occupies, suggesting additional factors such as grazing and hybridization may have exacerbated its decline. We found very little introgression between B. nana and B. pendula, despite both being diploid, perhaps because their distributions in the past have rarely overlapped. Future conservation of B. nana may partly depend on minimization of hybridization with B. pubescens, and avoidance of planting B. pendula near B. nana populations.  相似文献

There is very little data on the sugar content of tree sap in Central Europe. In order to fill this gap we measured sugar content in the spring sap of 55 trees from 8 species (six native and two introduced). Sugar content was measured chromatographically using an HPLC Dionex Ultimate 3000 system and CAD detection. The proportion of sugar was highly genus-specific: maples contained sucrose, birches a mix of glucose, fructose and sucrose and hornbeams glucose and fructose. Acer saccharinum had the sweetest sap (4.0%), followed by A. platanoides (3.2%), A. pseudoplatanus (3.2%), A. negundo (2.9%) and A. campestre (2.8%). Birches were slightly less sweet (Betula pendula 2.5% and B. pubescens 2.6%). Carpinus betulus sap contained only 0.9% sugar. The reported values for birches are higher than those reported in other European studies and the values for maples are similar to those for sugar maples in North America. As southeastern Poland has many large populations of maples and birches, a small-scale sugar syrup industry could become an additional source of income for forest owners.  相似文献

Predator effects on herbivores are often referred to as examples of biotic interactions that weaken with latitude, but more studies are needed to test for the generality of this pattern. To further the understanding of large‐scale geographical patterns in abundance and diversity of predatory arthropods, from 2008–2011 we explored spider communities in the canopies of primary forest trees of the boreal zone (Pinus sylvestris, Picea abies, Betula pubescens and B. pendula) along five latitudinal gradients in northern Europe, from 59 to 70°N and from 10 to 60°E. The abundance of arboreal spiders in Norway and Finland was about a half of that in Russia, presumably due to more intensive forest management in Scandinavia. The abundance, taxonomic and functional diversity of arboreal spiders generally decreased with latitude; however, actual weather conditions during the study years had little effect on this pattern. Coniferous species supported higher abundance and diversity of arboreal spiders than birches, but the poleward decrease in either abundance or taxonomic diversity of arboreal spiders did not differ between coniferous and deciduous tree species. In contrast, functional diversity on birches decreased with latitude greater than on coniferous trees. Euryphagous spiders showed stronger decrease with latitude in terms of both abundance and taxonomic diversity than more specialized (steno‐ and oligophagous) spiders. We attribute the general decrease in density and diversity of spiders with latitude to an increased pressure from apex predators (birds) rather than to direct effects of climate or changes in prey abundance. The abundance of spiders declined with the latitude to the greater extent than the densities of their potential prey did, suggesting a decrease in the strength of predator–prey interactions towards the north.  相似文献

Some insectivorous birds orient towards insect‐defoliated trees even when they do not see the foliar damage or the herbivores. There are, however, only a few studies that have examined the mechanisms behind this foraging behaviour. Previous studies suggest that birds can use olfactory foraging cues (e.g. volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by defoliated plants), indirect visual cues or a combination of the two sensory cues. VOCs from insect‐defoliated plants are known to attract natural enemies of herbivores, and researchers have hypothesized that VOCs could also act as olfactory foraging cues for birds. We conducted three experiments across a range of spatial scales to test this hypothesis. In each experiment, birds were presented with olfactory cues and their behavioural responses or foraging outcomes were observed. In the first experiment, two different VOC blends, designed to simulate the volatile emissions of mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii) after defoliation by autumnal moth (Epirrita autumnata) larvae, were used in behavioural experiments in aviaries with pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca). The second experiment was a field‐based trial of bird foraging efficiency; the same VOC blends were applied to mountain birches, silver birches (B. pendula) and European white birches (B. pubescens) with plasticine larvae attached to the trees to serve as artificial prey for birds and provide a means to monitor predation rate. In the third experiment, the attractiveness of silver birch saplings defoliated by autumnal moth larvae versus intact controls was tested with great tits (Parus major) and blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) in an aviary. Birds did not orient towards either artificial or real trees with VOC supplements or towards herbivore‐damaged saplings when these saplings and undamaged alternatives were hidden from view. These findings do not support the hypothesis that olfactory foraging cues are necessary in the attraction of birds to herbivore‐damaged trees.  相似文献

Boreal and cool temperate forests are the major land cover of northern Eurasia, and information about continental‐scale genetic structure and past demographic history of forest species is important from an evolutionary perspective and has conservation implications. However, although many population genetic studies of forest tree species have been conducted in Europe or Eastern Asia, continental‐scale genetic structure and past demographic history remain poorly known. Here, we focus on the birch genus Betula, which is commonly distributed in boreal and cool temperate forests, and examine 129 populations of two tetraploid and four diploid species collected from Iceland to Japan. All individuals were genotyped at seven to 18 nuclear simple sequence repeats (nSSRs). Pairwise among the six species ranged from 0.285 to 0.903, and genetic differentiation among them was clear. structure analysis suggested that Betula pubescens is an allotetraploid and one of the parental species was Betula pendula. In both species pairs of B. pendula and B. plathyphylla, and B. pubescens and B. ermanii, genetic diversity was highest in central Siberia. A hybrid zone was detected around Lake Baikal for eastern and western species pairs regardless of ploidy level. Approximate Bayesian computation suggested that the divergence of B. pendula and B. platyphylla occurred around the beginning of the last ice age (36 300 years BP, 95% CI: 15 330–92 700) and hybridization between them was inferred to have occurred after the last glacial maximum (1614 years BP, 95% CI: 561–4710), with B. pendula providing a higher contribution to hybrids.  相似文献

Background: Variable habitat conditions contribute to morphological variability that plays a substantial part in evolution of plants. Understanding the extent of phenotypic plasticity has important implication for assigning individuals to taxa.

Aims: I analysed morphological variability among populations within species of the Carex flava group and tested to what extent morphological variability was associated with habitat conditions.

Methods: A total of 571 specimens from 20 populations of four species from the C. flava complex were sampled in Poland and tested by Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA). The relationship between morphological characters and habitat factors was explored by means of the redundancy analysis (RDA).

Results: Variability of the generative and vegetative traits was fairly similar in Carex lepidocarpa, C. flava and Carex demissa, while it was somewhat higher in Carex viridula. The morphological traits were mostly related to soil organic matter content, calcium and carbonate, as well as to habitat fertility (C:N ratio), elevation and habitat disturbance. The results obtained do not support the separation of C. viridula var. pulchella from C. viridula var. viridula.

Conclusions: Phenotypic variability in the species of the C. flava complex is related to habitat conditions and this can lead to the differentiation of morphotypes within species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Larvae of the invasive mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus Say are morphologically similar to those of the native Culex pervigilans Bergroth, yet distinguishing these species can be hampered by morphological variations in Cx. quinquefasciatus. We present detail about the extent of these variations in an urban population of Cx. quinquefasciatus in Auckland. To aid in identification of this exotic species, we provide images of key diagnostic characters and some observed exceptions to these. Details regarding variation in diagnostic characters for < 3rd instar and 3rd/4th instar larvae are given. Of the nine characters used for identification, three were highly consistent (dorsal papillae, mantle plate, pecten teeth); each observed in > 90% of larvae, although these characters were not always visible. Other characters were less reliable, for instance, the expected position of seta 1a-S in relation to the pecten teeth was observed in < 10% of larvae. Further exploration of regional morphological variation in both Cx. quinquefasciatus and Cx. pervigilans is recommended, ideally with associated molecular characterisation.  相似文献

Recent molecular and physiological studies have demonstrated that ultraviolet‐B radiation (UV‐B) can affect some of the processes involved in leaf growth, but the phases of leaf growth affected have not been clearly delimited. We used functional growth analysis to assess the effects of UV‐B radiation on the time course of leaf growth in seedlings of two birch species (Betula pendula and Betula pubescens). Our aim was to identify the phase(s) of leaf development affected by UV‐B radiation. In a greenhouse study, 1‐year‐old birch seedlings were subjected to three daily doses of supplemental UV‐B radiation treatments (UV‐B+) and no UV‐B radiation controls (UV‐B?). Leaf growth measurements every 2 days were complemented by assessment of other functional traits over a 4‐week period at the start of the growing season. Using fitted curves, we were able to determine that the rate of leaf expansion was slowed by the UV‐B+ treatment in leaves of B. pendula because of a slower maximum leaf growth rate compared with plants under the UV‐B? controls, but that compensation toward the end of the period of expansion negated this difference when leaves reached their final size. UV‐B+ had little effect on the rate of B. pubescens leaf growth despite a larger reduction in leaf final size due to UV‐B+ than occurred in B. pendula leaves. In conclusion, effective regulation ameliorated the effects of UV‐B radiation on leaf and seedling growth in B. pendula, whereas in B. pubescens, reductions in leaf final size under UV‐B+ were consistent with a slightly reduced rate of height growth.  相似文献

Abstract

The genus Coleura contains two species: C. seychellensis restricted to the Seychelles Archipelago and C. afra broadly distributed on the African continent and the Arabian Peninsula. We recently captured and collected specimens of Coleura from Madagascar, an island from which it was previously unknown. Using museum specimens and the new material from Madagascar, we review morphological variation in members of this genus and present characters for species identification. On the basis of these comparisons, specimens from Madagascar are referable to C. afra. We present information on the natural history of the recently discovered Malagasy population.  相似文献

Phenolics, formed via a complex phenylpropanoid pathway, are important defensive agents in plants and are strongly affected by nitrogen (N) fertilization. Proanthocyanidins (PAs) are one possible endpoint of the phenylpropanoid pathway, and anthocyanidin reductase (ANR) represents a key enzyme in PA biosynthesis. In this study, the expression of silver birch (Betula pendula) anthocyanidin reductase BpANR was inhibited using the RNA interference (RNAi) method, in three consequent BpANR RNAi (ANRi birches) lines. The growth, the metabolites of the phenylpropanoid pathway, and the number of resin glands of the ANRi birches were studied when grown at two N levels. ANRi birches showed decreased growth and reduction in PA content, while the accumulation of total phenolics in both stems and leaves increased. Moreover, ANRi birches produced more resin glands than did wild‐type (WT) birches. The response of ANRi birches to N depletion varied compared with that of WT birches, and in particular, the concentrations of some phenolics in stems increased in WT birches and decreased in ANRi birches. Because the inhibition of PAs biosynthesis via ANR seriously affected birch growth and resulted in accumulation of the precursors, the native level of PAs in plant tissues is assumed to be the prerequisite for normal plant growth. This draws attention to the real plant developmental importance of PAs in plant tissues.  相似文献
