ADDITIONS TO THE CHECKLIST OF SOUTHERN AFRICAN FRESHWATER FISHES AND A GAZETTEER OF SOUTH-WESTERNANGOLAN COLLECTING LOCALITIES

SUMMARY

An additional 13 species of freshwater fishes recorded from south-western Angola, mainly from the Cunene Basin, are added to the checklist of southern African freshwater fishes, including five species of marine origin permanently resident in the fresh water of the Cunene River mouth. In addition, attention is drawn to a number of doubtful records from the region. A gazetteer of collecting localities in the region is presented.     

Liste préliminaire des Abeilles de Saint-Barthélemy (Antilles françaises) et leurs relations avec la flore butinée (Hymenoptera : Apoidea : Megachilidae,Apidae).

Summary. Preliminary checklist of bees from St. Barthelemy (French West Indies) and their relations with visited flowers (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Megachilidae, Apidae). An annotated checklist of bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Anthophila), excluding Halictidae, is compiled for St Barthelemy, an island located in the Lesser Antilles of the eastern Caribbean. The list has eight species, including three exotic species to the Caribbean, four others known only from the Caribbean and three that occur both on mainland and the West Indies. The list is constituted with data from literature and from our field researches carried out by Karl Questel between 2006 and 2013. A list of visited flowers, along with ecological notes for each species is also given.     

First Baltic amber megapodagrionid damselfly (Odonata: Zygoptera)

Electropodagrion szwedoi n. gen., n. sp., first Baltic amber megapodagrionid damselfly, is described. The European and North American fossils document a very high diversity and a much wider distribution of this group of damselflies during the Cenozoic than today. A checklist of described fossil species of damselflies of the family Megapodagrionidae is given.     

Checklist of naturally occurring entomopathogenic microbes and nematodes in New Zealand

Abstract

A checklist of records of naturally occurring insect-pathogenic microbes and nematodes in New Zealand is presented. All records are listed by pathogen group (fungi, bacteria, protozoa, viruses, rickettsia, and nematodes) and also by host insect order and species. Each record is referenced to the original author, and important subsequent references have been included, where appropriate. The checklist should be updated periodically to assist researchers.     

Notes on some corydiid species from China,with the description of a new genus (Blattodea: Corydioidea: Corydiidae)

This article presents the diversity of cockroach family Corydiidae from China. Epipolyphaga wukong Qiu, Che et Wang, n. gen., n. sp., is described. Habitus and detailed characters of the new taxa are illustrated. A comparison between the new genus and the morphologically similar genus Eupolyphaga Chopard is given. The genus Tivia Walker and the species Eucorydia westwoodi (Gerstaecker) are newly recorded from China. The Corydioidea chapter in Cockroaches of Southeastern China by Liu et al. is revised. A key to genera and a checklist of Chinese Corydiidae are provided.

Note on brachypterous Stenochiini from China (Coleoptera,Tenebrionidae) with description of a new species

A checklist of 29 brachypterous species in the tenebrionid tribe Stenochiini is given for China and neighboring countries. A new species is described and illustrated under the name of Strongylium liangi sp. n. (CHINA: Yunnan). Also, some new distribution data is provided for S. claudum (Gebien, 1914), and a distribution map of all Strongylium species in the checklist is presented.     

ADDITIONS AND SUPPLEMENTS TO THE MADAGASCAR AVIFAUNA

In order to update the data base on Madagascar birds, the literature is reviewed and museum records and unpublished data are taken into consideration. Records of unusual birds or species recorded for the first time in Madagascar are enumerated. For each new species the information associated with each record is presented, and an opinion is given if the record is acceptable or not. Twenty-two new species are proposed as additions to the list of Madagascar birds.     

Checklist of tortoise beetles (Coleoptera,Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae) from Colombia with new data and description of a new species

A new tortoise beetle species, Cyrtonota abrili, is described from the Antioquia and Caldas departments in Colombia. New faunistic data are provided for 87 species, including 16 new additions to the country’s fauna. A checklist of the known 238 species of tortoise beetles recorded from Colombia is given.     

Bryum apiculatum (Bryaceae) in East Cornwall: a moss new to Europe

Abstract

A key to the forty-two species and four varieties of Grimmia Hedw, and to Coscinodon Spreng. (2 spp) and Hydrogrimmia Loeske (1 sp.) in Europe, including a checklist, is presented.     

Review of the spore-feeding Idolothripinae from China (Thysanoptera,Phlaeothripidae)

An illustrated key is provided to the 19 genera of the subfamily Idolothripinae from China, and a checklist given to 62 named species, of which six species are newly recorded from China, together with the genus Bolothrips that is represented by two un-named species. A generic diagnosis is given for each genus, along with some discussion of systematic relationship problems and species diversity. Identification keys to species of 11 genera are provided, and Megathrips antennatus Guo, Feng & Duan is considered as a new synonymof Megathrips lativentris (Heeger).     

British Bryological Society Expedition to Mulanje Mountain,Malawi 2. Checklist of Malawi bryophytes

Abstract

A checklist of all bryophytes identified from Malawi at May 1991 is presented, with synonyms and references. The list is derived from literature and unpublished collections, and contains 197 mosses and 106 hepatics. The checklist was produced to provide a basis for describing plants new to Malawi, particularly for the British Bryological Society Expedition to Mulanje Mountain, Malawi in 1991. Distribution information is included, and the species accounts include published references and collection numbers where known. All information is held on a computer database.     

THE DISTRIBUTION AND ECOLOGY OF TWO MULLET SPECIES IN SOME FRESH WATER RIVERS IN THE EASTERN CAPE,SOUTH AFRICA

SUMMARY

Data on the relative abundance, penetration and breeding biology of the freshwater mullet Mugil cephalus and the flathead mullet Mugil cephalus in the freshwater reaches of some Eastern Cape coastal rivers are described. The differences found between the two species indicate that Myxus capensis is more specialized for a catadromous life history in an unstable riverine environment. Evidence showing the importance of the freshwater phase for the latter species is given and the disastrous effects of the erection of barriers to fish movement are stressed.     

Two new species of the bamboo-feeding leafhopper genus Abrus Dai & Zhang (Hemiptera,Cicadellidae, Deltocephalinae) from China

Two new species of the bamboo-feeding genus Abrus Dai & Zhang, 2002, Abrus xishuiensis sp. n. and Abrus langshanensis sp. n., are described and illustrated from Guizhou and Hunan, South China. A checklist and a key to 13 known species are given.     

ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS TO THE FOLIICOLOUS LICHEN FLORA OF COSTA RICA. THE FAMILY GYALECTACEAE

Abstract: This paper provides a revision of the foliicolous representatives of theGyalectaceae in Costa Rica. Five species of Coenogonium and 13 of Dimerella are distinguished.Coenogonium interplexum, C. interpositum, C. leprieurii, C. linkii and Dimerella vezdana are ubiquitous as to the choice of their substratum, whereas C. moniliforme and Dimerella lutea are facultatively foliicolous. The remainder are typically foliicolous taxa but may occasionally be found on bark. The following species are for the first time reported as foliicolous from Costa Rica: Coenogonium interplexum, C. interpositum, C. leprieurii, C. moniliforme, Dimerella fallaciosa, D. lisowskii , and D. aff. pilifera . Three new species are described: Dimerella isidiifera sp. nov. with disciform isidia, D. subzonata sp. nov. with small, bright yellow, dentate apothecia and a whitish prothallus, and D. siquirrensis sp. nov. with large, orange apothecia and a thin whitish prothallus. A key is presented for neotropical foliicolous Gyalectaceae , and notes on the distribution and ecology of the species are given.     

A COMMENT ON THE STATUS AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE GENUS PARATYLODIPLAX SERENE (BRACHYURA: OCYPODIDAE) IN SOUTHERN AFRICA

Summary

The ocypodid genus Paratylodiplax was described in 1974 and contains four species, three of which are endemic to southern Africa where they form an important component of the estuarine benthic fauna. However, very little is known about the biology and ecology of the genus, with discrepancies existing between the commonly quoted distributions and actual records of the species. This comment outlines the current taxonomic status of the genus and attempts to resolve the discrepancies in the distributions of the southern African species Paratylodiplax blephariskios has been recorded from the Morrumbene estuary in Mozambique to the Mngazana estuary in the eastern Cape, while the distributions of P. algoensis and P. edwardsii are given as being from the Mngazana to the Eerste estuary and Langebaan Lagoon in the western Cape respectively.     

SOUND PRODUCTION AND SOUND EMISSION IN SEVEN SPECIES OF EUROPEAN TETTIGONIIDS. PART I. THE DIFFERENT PARAMETERS OF THE SONG; THEIR RELATION TO THE MORPHOLOGY OF THE BUSHCRICKET

Abstract

Comparative studies of sound production and sound emission in seven species of European tettigoniids have been carried out. The species chosen were two Tettigoniines (Tettigonia cantans, Tettigonia viridissima), two Ephippigerines (Ephippiger discoidalis, Ephippiger ephippiger), and three Decticines (Decticus albifrons, Decticus verrucivorus, Psorodonotus illyricus). The factors which determined the choice of species were the different morphology (for example body shape and weight, and wing size) of the three subfamilies. The parameters of the different songs (e.g. dominant frequency, intensity) are normally not correlated to any of the investigated morphological characteristics of the animals. In the brachypterous species intraspecific correlations exist between wing size and the dominant low frequency band of the call. This frequency band is also observable at related higher frequencies in the ultrasonic range (20–60 kHz), the observed band width increasing with frequency. Sound emission in all species is to some extent directional. This directionality is related to body size and wing structure. The song structure of the different species does not appear to be related to any observable characteristic of the habitat of die animals. A possible exception may be the song of Psorodonotus illyricus with a particularly low dominant frequency band. The phylogenetic development of the songs seems to be determined by relationships between the different species rather than to any factors contributed by the habitat.
