Abstract. Machair vegetation is reported for the first time from New Zealand. The habitat is similar to that of British machairs in climate, topography and generally in soil. pH and CaCO3 content are much lower through most of the sequence, though this difference may partly reflect the greater disturbance of British machair. Sea machair is present, predominantly comprising native species. This grades into machair proper, which contains many species found also in British machair. The machair includes Ammophila-occupied hillocks, a feature typical of British machair. Machair marsh is also present.  相似文献

Summary

A survey of the cyanogenic polymorphism in Lotus corniculatus L. at Birsay Links, Orkney, showed the relative frequency of the cyanogenic phenotype to be low (7–8 per cent) on the dry soils towards the centre of the links but to rise steadily towards the borders where soil moisture content was high. At other links and machair sites in Orkney and the Outer Hebrides the cyanogenic phenotype never fell below a relative frequency of 83 per cent although moisture content was usually no higher than that recorded for the driest soils at Birsay. Several possible explanations are presented for this difference.  相似文献

Summary

The term machair is commonly applied to the landform/vegetation systems of many dune pasture areas of parts of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Definition of such areas appears to rest on locational, morphological, vegetational and soil criteria. Closer examination suggests that the main diagnostic feature is the soil parent material, shell-rich blown sand, which gives rise to high calcium carbonate and pH conditions. Secondary criteria include the morphological maturity of the machair surface, the absence of depositional processes, specific plant associations (notably the elimination of long dune grasses) and a history of grazing and, possibly, cultivation. Machair areas must also be set in a cool, moist maritime climatic regime.  相似文献

Summary

Machair is a complex dune grassland habitat confined to Scotland and Ireland. With two-thirds of the world area of machair in Scotland, the UK has a special responsibility for this resource, and the UK Machair Habitat Action Plan identifies a range of realistic management targets and actions aimed at protecting and enhancing the habitat.

Machair's conservation importance is substantially reliant on active, traditional management, but quantitative and location-based information on management is rarely available, and this will have an impact on any numerical targets in the Plan. Though progress has been made on many of the actions, further measurable progress will very much depend, not only on improvements in the information base, but also in the understanding of relationships between land use and biodiversity.

Progress to date on actions and targets is evaluated, and problems are identified.  相似文献

Machair is a grassland habitat that supports nationally rare species including the bumblebee species Bombus distinguendus and Bombus muscorum. Changes in land management practices have resulted in a loss of floral diversity in some areas, reducing the availability of bumblebee foraging resources. In order to determine the most effective way of increasing forage plant availability on degraded machair, a restoration trial was established in western Scotland and comprised four seed mixes and a fallow treatment. Treatments were monitored over 3 years in order to compare the relative abundance of bumblebees and their forage plants. Two mixes contained wildflower species; one mix is currently used to create bird and bee foraging habitat on nature reserves and the fourth is a commercially available grass mix. There was little variation in inflorescence and bumblebee abundance between treatments early on but marked differences emerged later in the season in all 3 years. By the end of the monitoring period, the wildflower treatments contained between four and eighteen times more inflorescences than other treatment types. Similar trends were observed in bumblebee abundances. Some of the rarest bumblebee species exist primarily in areas that have largely escaped agricultural intensification. In these areas it is important that habitat management is specifically targeted and translated into appropriate agri-environment schemes. We suggest that the most effective method for restoring bumblebee forage plants on machair is to sow wildflower-rich seed mixes and this should be combined with late cutting and winter grazing practices to maintain sward diversity over time.  相似文献

PurposeThe Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is continuously in search of environment-friendly farming practices since mass-scale agriculture was initiated. It is imperative to gauge to the level of awareness of the farmers on the agricultural practices causing environmental issue in order to devise new agricultural extension programs. This research aims to identify the attitudes of farmers towards agriculture and environment in Al-Ghat area of Saudi Arabia.MethodologyA simple random sample of 110 farms truly representing the farming community was drawn to meet the objectives of the study. Data were collected by using the pre-tested questionnaire during the face-to-face interviews. In order to understand the message of study, data were analyzed for percentages, arithmetic average and standard deviation in addition to the simple Pearson correlation coefficient.ResultsThe results showed that the high proportion (87.3%) of farmers was interested in continuing to work farm and 77.3% of farmers did not consider adopting agriculture their main occupation. The findings of the survey reveal that some 55.5% of the respondent farmers were aware of the agricultural practices and their relation to the environment. Some 57.3% of the surveyed farmers are aware of potential benefits of enhanced utilization of agricultural organic wastes. However, main profession, farm employment (as the independent variables) showed a significant positive correlation with the attitudes of farmers towards their working in agriculture (as a dependent variable). Also a significant negative relationship between the educational levels and the attitudes of the farmers towards working in agriculture was noticed. The study also indicated a significant correlation between education and the degree of awareness of agricultural practices related to the environment and maximizing the optimum utilization of agricultural waste i.e. organic residues.ConclusionsThe study suggested the need for new awareness and orientation programs to educate farmers and extension workers, highlighting the environment- friendly agricultural practices.Recommendation: There is need to offer incentives and facilities to keep the farmers stay in the farming business. Extension staff must keep educating them on beneficial features of organic farm waste and crop residues as organic fertilizers.  相似文献

Question: Is there a critical depth of burial by sand beyond which species and communities fail to recover, and does repeated incremental burial have a greater impact than a single large deposition? Location: The machair on the calcareous sand dunes on South Uist, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, UK. Methods: Eight turves were collected from each of four machair sub‐community types. After acclimatization in an unheated polythene tunnel, they were buried with sterilized machair shell sand, either by one single burial to 5 cm or by five applications of 1 cm of sand at approximately seven‐week intervals. Species response was recorded on five occasions. Results: Within machair sub‐communities, burial by sand reduced the abundance (local rooted frequency) of plants more than it reduced species richness. Intermittent burial was more damaging than a single burial event. Those species with the highest pre‐burial frequencies tended to dominate recovery in the sub‐community as a whole. Species occurring across all four sub‐community types exhibited varying responses to community burial between the differing types. Samples from slack sub‐communities had distinctly different response characteristics from those of foredunes and unploughed and three‐year fallow dune grassland. Conclusions: The perennial life‐form of many machair species has been evolutionarily selected for and dominates throughout the machair habitat. Account needs to be taken of competitive interaction between species in relation to burial response. The results of the investigation show that the hypotheses of Gilbertson et al. and Kent et al. on ‘machair stratification’ require refinement in that frequency of shallow burial can be as important as overall burial depth.  相似文献

Capsule The highest densities of Meadow Pipits in Central Europe are found in lowland and upland wet meadows.

Aims To create a large-scale predictive model of Meadow Pipit density.

Methods We analysed factors affecting the density of the Meadows Pipit in Poland using data from 777?×?1?km study plots and a set of 22 environmental variables, including agriculture intensification and habitat-specific plant species as classifiers of meadow types. Predictors were selected using variation inflation factor, then related to species density data using generalized additive models.

Results The best-supported model included 11 variables and was clearly better (Akaike information criterion weight?=?0.47) than other models. The density of the Meadow Pipit reaches its highest levels on large areas of extensively used wet meadows as well as pastures where livestock graze and which show high photosynthetic activity in April.

Conclusion Some aspects of the environment that were not identified from remote sensing data were vital for determining relatively high density. Conservation efforts for preserving Meadow Pipit populations should focus on maintaining wet meadows and extensively grazed pastures. Given the results, the Meadows Pipit may be classified as a good indicator of traditional agriculture.  相似文献

Abstract

This article focuses on the analysis of plant remains (seeds/fruits, charcoal, pollen, spores, and non-pollen palynomorphs) from two archaeological sites (pre-Roman and Roman) located in Las Médulas, a cultural landscape, in the northwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula. The article explores the way the communities living in the area managed their environment and the impact of productive activities on the landscape. This research has shown the multiplicity of needs this landscape satisfied and the various ways these communities managed the surrounding environment through different productive activities (agriculture, animal husbandry, and mining amongst others).  相似文献

Capsule Population decline since 1995 is associated with the harvesting of cereals as arable silage.

Aim To survey Corn Bunting populations on the Western Isles and test whether population changes since 1995 are associated with change in cereal harvesting methods.

Methods Twelve areas of machair on the Uists and Benbecula were re-surveyed in 2002, after previous surveys in 1983 and 1995. These and other areas of suitable habitat on these islands, plus Berneray, Baleshare, Vallay, Barra and Vatersay, were surveyed in 2003–05 to provide a breeding population estimate for the Western Isles. Cereal strips in the 12 core survey areas were mapped in 2002 and the timing and method of harvesting of each was recorded. Cattle-feeding stands in 24 crofting townships were visited in March 2003 to record the type of fodder available, measure grain abundance and ripeness in fodder samples, and record foraging Corn Buntings. Experimental trials tested whether Corn Buntings selected fodder with riper grain.

Results The Western Isles Corn Bunting population was estimated at 117 occupied territories in 2005, a decline of 17% since 2002/03, and of at least 62% since 1995. Population decline was greater in areas with higher proportions of the cereal area harvested as arable silage. Arable silage contained fewer and less-ripe grains than traditionally harvested cereal, and was less likely to attract feeding Corn Buntings. Corn Buntings preferred to feed on silage containing riper grain.

Conclusions The remaining Corn Bunting population of the Western Isles is declining rapidly, probably because of reduction in winter grain supply caused by change from traditional reaper-binder harvesting and stacking of fully ripe cereals to harvesting the crop as unripe or partially ripe arable silage. Management change to restore a supply of ripe grain over winter is likely to be essential if this population decline is to be halted and reversed.  相似文献

BackgroundInsects are significant to the environment, agriculture, health and biotechnology. Many of these aspects display some relationship to glycosylation, e.g., in case of pathogen binding or production of humanised antibodies; for a long time, it has been considered that insect N-glycosylation potentials are rather similar and simple, but as more species are glycomically analysed in depth, it is becoming obvious that there is indeed a large structural diversity and interspecies variability.MethodsUsing an off-line LC-MALDI-TOF MS approach, we have analysed the N-glycomes of two lepidopteran species (the cabbage looper Trichoplusia ni and the gypsy moth Lymantria dispar) as well as of the commonly-used T. ni High Five cell line.ResultsWe detected not only sulphated, glucuronylated, core difucosylated and Lewis-like antennal fucosylated structures, but also the zwitterion phosphorylcholine on antennal GlcNAc residues, a modification otherwise familiar from nematodes; in L. dispar, N-glycans with glycolipid-like antennae containing α-linked N-acetylgalactosamine were also revealed.ConclusionThe lepidopteran glycomes analysed not only display core α1,3-fucosylation, which is foreign to mammals, but also up to 5% anionic and/or zwitterionic glycans previously not found in these species.SignificanceThe occurrence of anionic and zwitterionic glycans in the Lepidoptera data is not only of glycoanalytical and evolutionary interest, but is of biotechnological relevance as lepidopteran cell lines are potential factories for recombinant glycoprotein production.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo estimate the associations of maternal and paternal age at delivery and of birth order with the risk of childhood onset type 1 diabetes.DesignCohort study by record linkage of the medical birth registry and the national childhood diabetes registry in Norway.SettingNorway.SubjectsAll live births in Norway between 1974 and 1998 (1.4 million people) were followed for a maximum of 15 years, contributing 8.2 million person years of observation during 1989-98. 1824 cases of type 1 diabetes diagnosed between 1989 and 1998 were identified.ResultsThere was no association between maternal age at delivery and type 1 diabetes among firstborn children, but among fourthborn children there was a 43.2% increase in incidence of diabetes for each five year increase in maternal age (95% confidence interval 6.4% to 92.6%). Each increase in birth order was associated with a 17.9% reduction in incidence (3.2% to 30.4%) when maternal age was 20-24 years, but the association was weaker when maternal age was 30 years or more. Paternal age was not associated with type 1 diabetes after maternal age was adjusted for.ConclusionsIntrauterine factors and early life environment may influence the risk of type 1 diabetes. The relation of maternal age and birth order to risk of type 1 diabetes is complex.

Abstract

Phosphorus (P) is one of the most important minerals required for plant growth occupying a strong position among soil macro nutrients. Soil P deficiency is often fulfilled by phosphate fertilizers. P deficiency in soils is due to less total P contents in the soil and fixation of added P from chemical fertilizers as well as other organic sources like manures. The response of plant under P stress or even when it is present in adequate amount is very mild. The basic constraint in the availability of P is its solubilization as it gets fixed both in acidic and alkaline soil. Soil fixed P can only be solubilized by phosphate solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs).These bacteria released different types of organic acids in the soil which make P soluble and available to plants. The potential of these PSMs to solubilize P varies and mainly depends upon mechanism adopted for solubilization, their molecular genetics as well as their ability to release P in soil. The PSMs, having all the characteristics of phytohormone production, nitrogen fixation, as well as, heavy metal decontamination and creating salt stress tolerance in plants, are quite rare for sustainable agriculture. Application of this environment friendly approach for increasing crop productivity as well as its impact on soil and plant health is discussed in this review which will not only open new avenues of research but also provide fruitful information about phosphate solubilizing microbes for sustainable agriculture development.  相似文献

Abstract

Variation of the Italian agricultural landscape in relation to the evolution of the agronomic techniques.- The agricultural activity and the practices that are connected with it more or less directly, have been transformed during the history of mankind according to the evolution of the various societies and policies. These variations are with no doubt the most “responsible” of the evolution of the agricultural landscape. The agronomic techniques that were used in the ancient agricultural societies were initially rough, the land being used temporarly by nomadic people and then abandoned when fertility or weather were not favourable to crop growth and replaced with new fertile areas. Therefore the impact of ancient agriculture on the landscape was very limited, also because of the low population density.

The permanent agriculture developed with the beginning of the great civilisations when the rural environment begun to assume a more stable aspect. During the Reinassance the diversification of agricultural activities had beneficial effects on the landscape, that used to be very variable, both as a result of the mixed cropping systems and the multiple agronomic techniqies used.

The most important upsetting of the agricultural landscape occurred in the last century, when agriculture become an economic activity, with the same dignity of the other productive sectors and related advantages and disadvantages. In this paper the impact of the main aspects of agricultural activity on the agricultural landscape are analysed, with particular attention to the choices that farmers had to make about crops, livestock and management of the rural landscape.  相似文献

From 1994 to 1997 investigations have been carried out on fields of the "Ökohof Seeben" in Halle (Saale), refering to long-term effects of ecological agriculture on fauna, flora and soil. For the sampling of the epigeic fauna, pitfall traps were used. The purpose was to examine the effect of the changes in management on spiders for example. The influence of field size, edge-structures and different crops on species- and individual-numbers was studied. The question was, whether ecological agriculture results in an increasing biodiversity overviewed over years. In 4 years, on 6 fields, 190 species of spiders (82,202 adults spiders) could be proved, among them 32 species endangered in Sachsen-Anhalt and 28 species endangered according to the Red-Data-Books of Germany. The species numbers in the edge-biotops were nearly twice the numbers in the fields. The activity density of pioneer species (for example Oedothorax apicatus ) decreased rapidly on all fields. As a whole species numbers, and also the number of seldom species, were higher on the small fields than on the large fields lying in a poor structured environment. On the large fields some species, especially some Gnaphosidae and Lycosidae were missing in the first two years, but could be proved in the later years. Increasing numbers of species bigger in size and also more balanced dominance structures could be observed in the later years of investigation. In the fields the Linyphiidae species O. apicatus, E. atra, E. dentipalpis, M. rurestris, L. tenuis, P. microphthalmum, A. humilis and the Lycosidae P. agrestis and P. prativaga were dominant. Other species, like D. concolor, B. gracilis, H. signifer, P. juncea, T. ruricola, D. pusillus, X. kochi, O. claveata, P. degeeri, P. palustris, R. lividus prefered the adjacent boundaries, but were represented in the field as well. Several species, such as A. cuneata, A. pulverulenta, T. terricola, X. miniata, X. nemoralis, A. albimana, P. mirabilis, Ch. campestre, X. acerbus, Z. spinimana, P. festivus, D. praeficus and D. lutetianus could be proved only in the adjacent boundaries. Altogether positive effects on the dominance structure of spiders could be shown. An increasing biodiversity may be expected.  相似文献

Background: In the Arctic region, temperature increases are expected to be greater under anticipated climate change than the global average. Understanding how dark respiration (Rd) of common Arctic plant species acclimates to changes in the environment is therefore important for predicting changes to the Arctic carbon balance.

Aims: The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of genotype and growing environment on Rd, the temperature response (Q10) of Rd, and foliar N (Nleaf) of the Arctic sedge Eriophorum vaginatum.

Methods: We measured Rd, and determined its Q10 and Nleaf of E. vaginatum populations that were reciprocally transplanted 30 years previously along a latitudinal transect of 370 km in northern Alaska.

Results: Rd and Q10 did not differ among populations (ecotypes) of E. vaginatum, but the local environment had a significant effect on both variables. Rd as well as Nleaf was higher in northern, colder sites, while Q10 was lower there.

Conclusions: Rd in the different populations of E. vaginatum is a very plastic trait and controlled by growing environment, as is Nleaf. The lower Q10 values in the northern sites were most likely a consequence of substrate inhibition of Rd at higher temperatures.  相似文献

Abstract

Strobilurin fungicides are some of the most heavily used antifungal chemicals in agriculture. However, little is known of their fate in the environment. We have identified bacteria that slowly transform strobilurin fungicides via hydrolysis of a methyl ester group in the toxophore, rendering them non-fungicidal. A carboxypeptidase (subtilisin Carlsberg) was found to have this activity, albeit with low specific activity (2.4 × 10?2 nmol s?1 mg?1), and to possess specificity towards an analog of the fungicidal isomer of commercial strobilurins. Substrate-docking studies using the known structure for subtilisin Carlsberg revealed a plausible explanation for both the activity and isomer specificity of this class of hydrolase. These findings suggest that the promiscuous strobilurin methyl esterase activity of the subtilisin-like carboxypeptidases may have a role in the environmental fate of the strobilurin fungicides.  相似文献
