Juncus effusus s. str. has two native representatives on the coast of western North America. A new combination is provided forJuncus effusus subsp.pacificus, ranging from California to British Columbia.Juncus effusus subsp.austrocalifornicus is newly described from southernmost California, Arizona, and Baja California, México. It differs from subsp.pacificus by its pale sheaths, with less thickened and less overlapping margins, and its disjunct distribution. A key is provided for the subspecies ofJ. effusus in North America.  相似文献

Summary

Changes in frequency of species in a Juncus effusus community were observed over a period of ten years. The community was shown to contain two groups of associated species and the members of one of these groups showed a decline in frequency during this period. Juncus acutus and J. maritimus are two colonizers of coastal marsh rangeland with worldwide distribution. We tested the effect of salt, temperature, and photoperiod on the germination capacity of seeds of the two Juncus from the Rhône delta (south of France). We measured the first day of germination, the mean time, speed, and rate of germination on seeds subjected to five salinity levels, three Dark–Light temperatures and two D-L photoperiods (12–12 and 10–14). The 10–14 D-L photoperiod, although it corresponds to one of the two main germination periods of J. acutus and J. maritimus in the northern Mediterranean, has never been previously used to study their germination capacity. Analyses showed significant effects of salinity and temperature on the germination parameters tested, and for these two factors we found results comparable to those of previous studies. Salinity slowed down and reduced the germination process while spring temperatures had a positive effect. A surprising result was obtained by changing the D-L photoperiod from 12–12 to 10–14 which then largely buffered the negative effect of salt and high temperatures on germination. This capacity of J. acutus and J. maritimus to withstand salty conditions during the germination phase due to the spring photoperiod could be decisive in the ability of both species to colonize saline environments.  相似文献

Summary Plant communities containing Juncus squarrosus were analysed in a 100 km2 area at the head of Teesdale in the north Pennines. The method of successive approximation was applied, using quadrats of 1/4m2. Five noda were recognised, and their relation to noda previously described from the Scottish Highlands is discussed.The species-rich Juncus-Nardus nodum on irrigated gley soils, and the Juncus-Festuca rubra-Mnium punctatum nodum on flushed peat, contain many hydrophilic species and together constitute an association called species-rich Juncetum squarrosi sub-alpinum. The species-poor Juncus-Nardus nodum occurs on gley soils poorer in bases, and is probably a facies of species-poor Nardetum sub-alpinum. The remaining two noda, the Juncus-Vaccinium myrtillus and the Juncus-Carex nigra-Polytrichum commune, are found on acid, humus-rich soils, being differentiated by freedom of drainage. They contain little Nardus, but constitute an association called species-poor Juncetum squarrosi sub-alpinum. This occupies a considerable area in upper Teesdale, but differs from similar communities described in the Carneddau of north Wales and in the Scottish Highlands in that Agrostis spp. and Anthoxanthum odoratum are scarce. This is perhaps due to long-continued grazing by sheep.  相似文献

BackgroundThe rare earth elements (REE) are non-essential elements for plants. They stimulate plant growth at low doses, but at high levels are phytotoxic. There are differences in concentrations of REE in various organs of the same plant species, but the normalized REE patterns can be very similar in samples of the same species collected in different locations. Here we compare normalized REE curves in above-ground samples of Juncus effusus L. (common rush, soft rush) collected from sites with different land-use types.MethodsThe concentrations of rare earth elements were measured in 55 shoot samples of J. effusus L. The samples were collected from 15 sampling sites located in the Holy Cross Mts., south-central Poland and analyzed with the use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results were normalized to the North American Shale Composite and anomalies of different elements were calculated.ResultsTotal REE concentrations varied from 0.028 mg/kg to 2.7 mg/kg. The samples were enriched in the light REE (from La to Eu) with the highest concentrations of La and Ce. The North American Shale Composite (NASC)-normalized REE curves were roughly similar in all samples except for two samples collected in the acid mine drainageaffected areas.ConclusionAll samples showed positive europium anomalies in NASC-normalized REE concentration patterns. The most probable explanation of this is that the uptake and translocation of Eu in J. effusus (and possibly in other wetland plants) is caused by a short-term decrease of the redox potential in a rhizosphere favoring reduction of Eu3+ to Eu2+ and thus enhancing Eu mobility in the soil-plant environment.  相似文献

1. Standing dead plant litter of emergent macrophytes frequently constitutes a significant fraction of the detrital mass in many freshwater wetland and littoral habitats. Rates of leaf senescence and decomposition of the emergent macrophyte Juncus effusus were examined in a small freshwater wetland in central Alabama, U.S.A. Juncus effusus leaves in the initial stages of senescence were tagged in random plant tussocks and monitored periodically to determine in situ rates of leaf senescence and death. Fully senescent leaves were collected, placed in litter bags, and suspended above the sediments to simulate standing dead decay conditions. Litter bags were periodically retrieved over 2 years and analysed for weight loss, litter nutrient contents (N, P), associated fungal biomass and fungal taxa. 2. Senescence and death of J. effusus leaves proceeds from the leaf tip to the base at an exponential rate. The rate of senescence and death of leaf tissue increased with increasing temperatures. Plant litter decomposition was slow (k = 0.40 yr–1), with 49% weight loss observed in 2 years. Both the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentration (%) of litter increased during decomposition. However, the total amount of nitrogen (mg) in litter bags remained stable and phosphorus increased slightly during the study period. 3. Fungal biomass associated with plant litter, as measured by ergosterol concentrations, varied between 3 and 8% of the total detrital weight. Values were not significantly different among sampling dates (P > 0.05, ANOVA, Tukey). Fungi frequently identified on decaying litter were Drechslera sp., Conioscypha lignicola (Hyphomycetes), Phoma spp. (Coelomycetes), Panellus copelandii and Marasmiellus sp. (Basidiomycota). 4. These results support previous findings that plant litter of emergent macrophytes does not require submergence or collapse to the sediment surface to initiate microbial colonization and litter decomposition.  相似文献

Summary Six noda occurring on British saltmarshes in whichJuncus maritimus is an important constituent are described. Using numerical techniques these noda are related to previously described communities. It is suggested that two noda be incorporated in theHalimionetum portulacoidis andAtriplici — Agropyretum pungentis while three others are considered to form theJuncus maritimus — Oenanthe lachenalii Ass. R. Tx. 1937 which is included within theArmerion maritimae. The status of theTriglochin — Juncus maritimus nodum remains uncertain. The affinities between northern European and MediterraneanJ. maritimus communities are discussed and it is suggested that the differences between them are not as great as might be supposed from their conventional assignment to separate classes. The variation within theJuncetum gerardii is discussed and it is considered that most of the vegetation described as theJunco — Caricetum extensae may be incorporated in theJuncetum gerardii.Nomenclature follows Hubbard (1968) forPoaceae, and Clapham, Tutin & Warburg (1962) for other British vascular plants. Data from the long-term experiment on sheep grazing versus zero sheep grazing (i.e. in an enclosure) on the composition of the Juncus squarrosus grassland at the Moor House NNR are presented. The data have been analysed to assess change in (1) the abundance of individual species, (2) higher plant and bryophyte communities, and (3) vegetation structure. The higher plant data suggested that both the enclosed-and grazed plots were changing in the same direction, but the enclosed plot was moving much faster. The general tendency was towards a blanket bog vegetation dominated by Eriophorum vaginatum and Calluna vulgaris. Juncus squarrosus has declined very quickly in the enclosed plot, but there has also been a slower decline in the grazed one. A significant increase in Calluna vulgaris has occurred only in the enclosed plot. In contrast, the bryophyte data showed completely different successional trajectories in the two treatment plots.The vegetation structure changed markedly after release from grazing, with a decrease in phytomass, but increase in necromass in the lowest height strata. There was no noticeable change in structure over the 18 year period in the grazed plot.Particular problems found in this study were that some species either fluctuated widely in response, or changed in a curvilinear manner.  相似文献

Abstract Salt marshes dominated by Spartina alterniflora (smooth cordgrass) are among the most productive ecosystems known, despite nitrogen limitation. Rhizoplane/rhizosphere diazotrophy (nitrogen fixation) serves as a significant source of combined nitrogen in these systems. Several recent studies have demonstrated remarkable physiological and phylogenetic macro- and microdiversity within this important functional group of organisms. However, the ecological significance of this diversity is presently unknown. The physiological characteristics of the culturable, oxygen-utilizing fraction of the rhizoplane diazotroph assemblages from Spartina alterniflora and from another salt marsh grass, the black needle rush Juncus roemerianus, were examined in combination with an assessment of the phylogenetic relatedness by whole genome DNA–DNA hybridization. Analysis of substrate utilization data permitted quantitative evaluation of fully cross-hybridizing strain groups and physiological clusters. Phylogenetically related strains, defined by DNA homology ≥90% relative to the positive control, displayed extensive physiological diversity. Seven bootstrap-supported physiological clusters, composed largely of phylogenetically dissimilar strains, showed similar utilization patterns for at least one class of ecologically relevant substrates (carbohydrates, carboxylic acids, or amino acids). These diazotrophs appear to be physiologically adapted for utilization of specific substrates or classes of substrates, lending support to diazotrophic functional redundancy. Microenvironmental heterogeneity is credited for promoting this diversity by selecting for physiologically specialized diazotroph populations to occupy defined niches in situ. One outcome of this physiological diversity is maintenance of a crucial environmental function (nitrogen fixation) over a broad range of environmental conditions. In the present study, we used 16S rRNA barcoded pyrosequencing to investigate to what extent monospecific stands of different salt marsh plant species (Juncus maritimus and Spartina maritima), sampling site and temporal variation affect sediment bacterial communities. We also used a bioinformatics tool, PICRUSt, to predict metagenome gene functional content. Our results showed that bacterial community composition from monospecific stands of both plant species varied temporally, but both host plant species maintained compositionally distinct communities of bacteria. Juncus sediment was characterised by higher abundances of Alphaproteobacteria, Myxococcales, Rhodospirillales, NB1–j and Ignavibacteriales, while Spartina sediment was characterised by higher abundances of Anaerolineae, Synechococcophycidae, Desulfobacterales, SHA–20 and Rhodobacterales. The differences in composition and higher taxon abundance between the sediment bacterial communities of stands of both plant species may be expected to affect overall metabolic diversity. In line with this expectation, there were also differences in the predicted enrichment of selected metabolic pathways. In particular, bacterial communities of Juncus sediment were predicted to be enriched for pathways related to the degradation of various (xenobiotic) compounds. Bacterial communities of Spartina sediment in turn were predicted to be enriched for pathways related to the biosynthesis of various bioactive compounds. Our study highlights the differences in composition and predicted functions of sediment‐associated bacterial communities from two different salt marsh plant species. Loss of salt marsh habitat may thus be expected to both adversely affect microbial diversity and ecosystem functioning and have consequences for environmental processes such as nutrient cycling and pollutant remediation.  相似文献

Summary Tissue culture and plant regeneration protocols for the salt marsh plants Juncus roemerianus Scheele and Juncus gerardi Loisel, were developed. J. roemerianus callus was induced from mature seeds cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2.22 μM 6-benzylaminopurine (BA), 5.37 μM α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), 2.26 μM 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), and 50 ml l−1 coconut water (callus induction medium). The callus was subcultured on MS medium containing 2.22 μM BA, 5.37 μM NAA, and 9.05 μM 2,4-D for callus maintenance. Shoot regeneration occurred 2 wk after transferring the callus onto shoot regeneration medium, which consisted of MS medium containing BA or thidiazuron. A high frequency of shoot regeneration was obtained when the medium contained 13.3 μM BA. Regenerated shoots were transferred to MS medium supplemented with 10.7 μM NAA for root production. Rooting did not occur in the shoots regenerated on the thidiazuron-containing media. The callus induction medium for J. roemerianus was also effective in inducing callus of J. gerardi from young inflorescences. The same medium was also used for callus maintenance. Shoot regeneration occurred 10 d after transferring the callus onto MS medium supplemented with 0.44 μM BA and 0.57 μM indole-3-acetic acid. Root regeneration occurred after transferring the shoots onto MS medium plus 0.44 μM BA and 14.8 μM indole-3-butyric acid. The regenerated plants of both J. roemerianus and J. gerardi grew vigorously in potting soil in the greenhouse. J. roemerianus regenerants also grew well in a saltwater-irrigated field plot. Tissue culture-produced plants of J. roemerianus and J. gerardi can be used for planting in created or restored wetlands.  相似文献

Juncus kraussii, which is the dominant emergent macrophyte in the marshes of the Blackwood River Estuary, has an estimated net above-ground production there of 0.3 to 1.3 kg dry weight m-2 yr-1. A high standing crop of live culms is present throughout the year and dead material generally exceeds live. New culms are produced throughout the year, but especially during the warm season. Growth and senescence of culms also occurs throughout the year although there is evidence for increased growth in the warm season. Concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus are given on a per g dry weight and per m2 basis. Some 60% of the nitrogen and 50% of the phosphorus remain in the dead culm material, the remainder being retranslocated. Sodium and, especially, potassium are readily retranslocated during senescence, but calcium and magnesium are much less mobile.  相似文献

Radial oxygen loss (ROL) from the roots of two semiaquatic rushes, Juncus effusus L. and Juncus inflexus L., was studied in reducing titanium citrate buffer, using both closed incubations and a flow-through, titrimetric system. In closed experiments, roots released oxygen at a constant rate over a wide range of external oxygen demands, with the ROL rate only depending on sink strength at low demands, and no oxygen release into oxidized solutions. In the titrimetric experiments, roots continued to release oxygen at constant rates when provided with a constant external oxygen demand. ROL was higher in J. effusus (9·5 ± 1 × 10?7 mol O2 h?1 root?1) than in J. inflexus (4·5 ± 0·5 × 10?7 mol O2 h?1 root?1). Light and dark changes around the shoots did not affect the ROL rate in J. inflexus, whereas in J. effusus ROL was ≈ 1·75 times higher in the light than in the dark, presumably due to changes in stomatal aperture. These results suggest that ROL is controlled by the external oxygen demand at low to moderate reducing intensities, but that structural limitations to oxygen diffusion rates prevent ROL from continuing to increase at higher external oxygen demands.  相似文献

The influence of salinity on Typha orientalis and Juncus kraussii was documented in experiments on germination of seeds and on growth of seedlings and adult, rhizome-bearing plants. Juncus was more salt-tolerant than Typha at all three life-history stages, but salt tolerance increased with plant age for both species. Although seeds of both species germinated at 0 and 5 ppt, the germination data overestimated salt tolerance for Typha. Only the newly emerged seedlings of Juncus were capable of growth after removal from the 5 ppt NaCl solution to fresh water. Typha seedlings that initiated growth at 0 ppt grew well at 5 ppt but not at 10 ppt, while Juncus seedlings were tolerant of 10 ppt. Although the 20 ppt treatment caused high mortality of Juncus seedlings, the 10 ppt treatment mainly reduced growth. Adult plants of Typha, which were collected from the field, survived the 20 ppt treatment, while adult Juncus survived the 40 ppt treatment. The presence of salt (10–40 ppt) shortened the growing season for adult, rhizome-bearing plants of both Juncus and Typha, with a lower maximum and earlier peak in total leaf length and maximum leaf number. Thus, the greater biomass in fresh water was achieved primarily through a longer growth period, rather than a greatly accelerated growth rate. Interactions between the two species were explored in mixed-species culture of both seedlings and adult rhizome-bearing plants. Interspecific interactions were present at low salinity, but results differed for seedlings and adult plants. Typha seedlings failed to outgrow Juncus seedlings (at 5 ppt) but adult plants of Typha outgrew Juncus (at 0 ppt). Relative yields (biomass in mixed/pure pots) for Juncus and Typha seedlings were 0.85 and 0.26 at 5 ppt. Relative yields of adult plants were 0.24 for Juncus and 1.20 for Typha at 0 ppt. For both seedlings and adults, the species that ultimately dominated the mixed-species pots produced just as much total biomass as in pure-species pots, even though initial planting density was half as high. Extrapolating findings to the field situation, it appears that Typha has a narrow regeneration niche. The indication is that Typha could invade Juncus stands only following salinity reduction (allowing seed germination and early seedling growth) and after disturbance disrupts the native vegetation. The combined conditions of prolonged low salinity and open habitat occur where street drains are cut through the salt marsh. The probability of Typha becoming established would be highest in such areas. vegetative expansion would follow with continued freshwater influx, as rhizome-bearing plants gain an interspecific advantage.  相似文献

Juncus articulatus, a species introduced to Australia, is codominant over large areas of Mother of Ducks Lagoon but is rare in other lagoons. It occurs widely within the lagoon but is concentrated in lower, wetter areas that are more disturbed by birds and cattle. This suggests that J. articulatus may be separated over elevation (and therefore water regime) and disturbance gradients from the native grass Glyceria australis, the dominant species in the lagoon. This paper compares the growth and interaction of G. australis and J. articulatus under different water regimes. The species responded differently to water regime both in monoculture and in mixture. Above ground production of J. articulatus was greatest under fluctuating water levels, least under a damp water regime and intermediate under flooded conditions. G. australis production was greatest under the damp, least under the flooded and intermediate under the fluctuating water regime. The outcome of interaction is dependent on water regime and time. After one year J. articulatus was the superior competitor under all water regimes. At the end of two years J. articulatus was still the superior competitor under fluctuating and flooded water regimes but not under the damp regime. The change in outcome after two years was due to the competitive superiority of G. australis during the second year under all water regimes. The relative importance and the management implications for the invasive potential of J. articulatus are assessed in shallow Australian wetlands with fluctuating water regimes.  相似文献

The new combinations Conyza laevigata (Astereae), Praxelis diffusa (Eupatorieae), and Riencourtia pedunculosa (Heliantheae) are made. Conyza laevigata includes C. apurensis; Praxelis diffusa includes P. pauciflora and the type of the genus, P. villosa; and Riencourtia pedunculosa includes R. glomerata and R. spiculifera, the type of the genus. Lectotypes are designated for names of five species described by Richard. The current names of other species of Compositae described by Richard in 1792 are given, including the reduction of Eupatorium incisum to Chromolaena odorata. Labeling errors are discussed, and the type of Erigeron laevigatus is taken to be from the West Indies. Riencourtia is newly documented for Bolivia and Panama.  相似文献

Stenogrammitis , a new genus of grammitid ferns, is segregated from Lellingeria based on morphological and molecular evidence. It differs from Lellingeria by linear leaves usually less than 5 mm wide, clathrate iridescent rhizome scales that are glabrous except for a single apical cilium, veins unbranched and only one per segment, fertile veins usually with the dark sclerenchyma visible beneath the sporangia, and x = 33. In contrast, Lellingeria has broader laminae, veins pinnate within the segments, and fertile veins not visible beneath the sporangia. Melpomene, which is sister to Stenogrammitis and Lellingeria, differs from those two genera by reddish setae on the leaves and rhizome scales papillate at the apex. Some species of Stenogrammitis are also distinctive by hemidimorphic laminae that have the fertile portion less dissected than the sterile. Stenogrammitis is pantropical and currently comprises 24 species, 12 of which occur in the Neotropics, six in Africa, four in Madagascar, and two on Pacific Islands. New combinations are made for Stenogrammitis aethiopica, S. anamorphosa, S. ascensionensis, S. boivinii, S. delitescens, S. jamesonii, S. hartii, S. hellwigii, S. hildebrandtii, S. limula, S. luetzelburgii, S. myosuroides, S. nutata, S. oosora, S. paucipinnata, S. prionodes, S. pumila, S. ruglessii, S. rupestris, S. saffordii, S. strangeana, S. tomensis, S. subcoriacea, and S. wittigiana. Lectotypifications are made for Grammitis muscosa, Polypodium itatiayense, P. oosorum var. micropecten, P. serrulatum forma major, P. serrulatum forma minor, S. luetzelburgii, S. myosuroides, and S. wittigiana. Illustrations are presented for the diagnostic characters of the genus, as well as a map with the geographical distribution.  相似文献

Background: Climatic variables determining the most suitable sites for the woodlands of Tierra del Fuego are not yet as well understood as those related to their geographical range.

Aim: The aim of this paper is to provide some insights into the relationships between climatic niche and current distribution of three Nothofagus species in Tierra del Fuego.

Methods: We have identified the climatic variables responsible for the most suitable sites for three sub-Antarctic Nothofagus woodland types within their climatic ranges by calculating suitability indices, using the CLIMPAIR niche-based phytoclimatic model.

Results: The distribution range of the major Nothofagus woodlands is mainly driven by variables related to water stress, whereas phytoclimatic suitability is mainly driven by thermal variables related to warm summer temperatures for Nothofagus betuloides and N. pumilio and to winter cold for N. antarctica that are also mainly responsible for the peculiarity of the Fueguian climate.

Conclusions: These findings introduce a new perspective in the study of the Nothofagus ecology, based on the climatic traits responsible for the high-suitability locations instead of the traditional focus on the overall geographical distribution.  相似文献

In the present study, a full scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland was designed, constructed and operated to treat domestic wastewater of K?z?lcaören village in Samsun city of Turkey. The total surface area of HSFCW was divided into equal parts. The effects of Juncus acutus L. and Cortaderia selloana (Schult.Schult.f.)Asch.&;Graebn. on pollutants removal in HSFCWs were evaluated with the meteorological factors. The average removal efficiencies of J. acutus and C. selloana were determined as 60.3–57.7% for BOD; 24.2–38.9% for TN; 31.4–49.8% for OM; 35.4–43.3% for TP; 18.9–27.1% for orthophosphate; 24.4–28.7% for NH4-N; 29.5–37.2% for TSS; and 35.3–44.3% for TSM. Two-way ANOVA was applied to determine any difference for the removal of all parameters between the plant types and months on the mean values of contaminant removal. A correlation matrix of all parameters was determined. Subsurface flow constructed wetland was found quite efficient for the treatment of domestic wastewater in rural settlements. HSFCW is also more economical to install and maintain than a conventional wastewater treatment system while enhancing ecosystem services.  相似文献
