Studies of the at‐sea distribution and trophic ecology of penguins are essential to understand their role in the broader marine food web. Magellanic Penguins Spheniscus magellanicus have a wide distribution and their foraging behaviour varies across breeding sites and between sexes, among others. In this study, we characterized the at‐sea areas, the diving strategies and the relative trophic level of Magellanic Penguins breeding at Isla de los Estados, Argentina, during the early chick‐rearing period. In addition, we quantified the interannual, sexual and individual variability in those parameters during three breeding seasons (2011–2013) using devices recording position and dive depth, and obtained blood samples for stable isotope analysis. During the early chick‐rearing period, Magellanic Penguins showed small differences between the sexes in their foraging behaviour and large overlap in the at‐sea areas used, suggesting no intraspecific variation between sexes. Although there was interannual variability in the foraging behaviour and the trophic level of the penguins, most of the studied nests managed successfully to raise both chicks during the first stage of the breeding cycle (guard stage). The foraging ecology of Magellanic Penguins from this colony was comparable with results of past studies at other breeding colonies. This study contributes to the identification of important at‐sea areas for Magellanic Penguins at the southern edge of their distribution and also to the identification of possible threats in the study area such as interaction with fisheries.  相似文献

The Magellanic woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus) is a vulnerable and poorly studied bird in the sub-antarctic deciduous and evergreen beech (Nothofagus) forests of South America. On Tierra del Fuego island (Chile), we compared Magellanic woodpecker abundance and its foraging habitat in two forest types: pure N. pumilio and mixed forests composed by N. pumilio and N. betuloides, including managed and non managed stands. At a regional scale, abundance of woodpeckers was greater in landscapes including both forest types than in pure N. pumilio landscapes. When both forest types occurred together, woodpecker abundance did not differ between them. The number of trees with foraging signs was correlated with Magellanic woodpecker abundance and was also associated with N. betuloides and snag densities, but was not affected by forest management. Occurrence of pecking on foraging trees was greater in mixed Nothofagus than pure N. pumilio stands. Woodpeckers foraged disproportionately more on larger diameter and more decayed trees. Moreover, trees used for foraging were positively correlated with canopy cover and snag density and were negatively correlated with distance to nearby peatlands and beaver ponds. Direct observation revealed that the flying distance between trees was negatively correlated with proportion of trees with foraging signs. Woodpeckers chose trees that were visited before, suggesting a pattern of tree recognition within foraging territories.Communicated by F. Bairlein  相似文献

We studied the distribution and abundance of seabirds along the Beagle Channel during February and March 1997. We examined the distribution and abundance, following the strip transects methodology, of species and their relation with habitat and foraging strategy of the birds. We divided the study area into six zones a priori. We made 20 trips aboard tourist vessels. The species most abundant in the study area were the imperial cormorant, dolphin gull, kelp gull, black-browed albatross, South American tern and Chilean skua. We concluded that seabirds were distributed non-randomly in the marine environment of the Beagle Channel. The shallow waters present the largest seabird density in the Beagle Channel. The Islas Bridges zone had the highest total density of seabirds, followed by the Bahía Ushuaia zone. The first zone holds colonies of most of the seabird species nesting in the channel. The presence of seabirds in the Bahía Ushuaia zone is influenced by the Islas Bridges zone itself, from where breeding birds come, and also by Ushuaia city, the port and the open garbage dump, where birds that feed on carrion can find alternative sources of food. The distribution of species in the whole study area was related to the foraging strategies, interactions with other species and characteristics of the habitat. We identified three groups of bird species and four independent species by cluster analysis. The first group included the black-browed albatross and the Magellanic penguin, which were associated with deep waters. In the second group the imperial cormorant and Chilean skua were associated with shallow waters along the study area, especially in the Islas Bridges zone where these species breed. Lastly, the kelp gull and southern giant petrel formed interspecific groups on the coast in places influenced by humans. The independent species numbered four. The rock cormorant associated with shallow waters in kelp bed areas. Showing a completely different foraging behaviour from the rest of the species, the dolphin gull occurred in shallow waters in the Islas Bridges zone associated with sea lions' and cormorants' colonies. Diving petrels were associated with deep waters on the west side of the channel. The South American tern was distributed all along the study area. Accepted: 14 November 1999  相似文献

Several woodpecker species feed on phloem-sap flowing from pecked trees. We report sap consumption by the magellanic woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus) inhabiting beech (Nothofagus) forests of Tierra del Fuego island (Chile). Magellanic woodpeckers drilled sap wells in N. betuloides trees close to their nests and also when they were moving in family groups. Three other bird species were observed foraging and competing for sap: the austral parakeet (Enicognathus ferrugineus) and two small passerines, the patagonian sierra-finch (Phrygilus patagonicus) and the white-crested elaenia (Elaenia albiceps). The abundance of these three bird species was greater in sites around sap wells than in other forest sites, suggesting that magellanic woodpecker is an important species in maintaining the Nothofagus forest bird assemblage.  相似文献

In coasts bordering highly productive seas, there can be a flux of resources to the terrestrial ecosystem, and terrestrial carnivores can use marine prey extensively. Two native, endangered species (otter Lontra provocax and culpeo fox Pseudalopex culpaeus lycoides) and two exotic species (mink Neovison vison and grey fox Pseudalopex griseus) inhabit the Beagle coast. The objectives of this paper are: (1) to describe the diet, habitat use and distribution of otters, mink and foxes on the coast of the Beagle channel and (2) to discuss the role of marine resources in the ecological interactions among these species. Diet was determined from the analysis of 245 faeces, and distribution was established from sign surveys. Marine prey occurred in the scats of 98.3, 70.4, 35.5 and 18.2% of otters, mink, culpeo and grey foxes, respectively. Other terrestrial species also use marine resources in Southern Patagonia. All this evidence suggests that the Fueguian coastal channels provide an illuminating example of allochthonous food subsidies from the sea. In the community of four sympatric predators, two native (and endangered) and two exotic, coexistence appears to be facilitated by a renewing marine food subsidy.  相似文献

Capsule: Most bird species start full incubation before the clutch is complete, others long after laying the last egg, gradually increasing the incubation temperature as incubation progresses, as is the case in Magellanic Penguins Spheniscus magellanicus.

Aims: In this study, we analysed the possible mechanisms underlying this delayed start of full incubation in Magellanic Penguins. We postulated two non-mutually exclusive, possible mechanisms: delayed development of the brood patch and/or variation in the adults’ incubation postures.

Methods: We conducted our work at Isla Quiroga, Argentina during 2011–13. We measured the development of the brood patch area, its temperature, the egg temperature and observed the postures of adult penguins.

Results: We found no association between the adults’ postures and the delayed start of full incubation, nor between brood patch temperature and the increase in egg temperature as incubation proceeded (egg age). The intercept of the curve between egg temperature and egg age was positively related to brood patch area, while the slope of the curve was negatively related.

Conclusion: Our results support the hypothesis that the shape of the curve of the increase in egg temperature as incubation proceeds is a consequence of the increase in the extension of the brood patch area.  相似文献

Knowledge of seabirds’ diet at each breeding site and its temporal variation is key to understanding and evaluating how changes in marine resources affect each seabird population. In this study, we determined the diet of Magellanic penguins (MP, Spheniscus magellanicus) at Martillo Island, accounting for sex, breeding stage and year. We analyzed a total of 144 stomach contents during three consecutive breeding seasons (2006–2007, 2007–2008 and 2008–2009) and stages (incubation, early and late chick-rearing). MP fed mainly on fuegian sprat (Sprattus fuegensis), which represented 75 % of the biomass consumed by birds during the entire study. The next important prey was squat lobster (Munida gregaria), followed by Patagonian squid (Loligo gahi). Both sexes consumed similar prey items. We observed variation in diet relative composition among breeding years and stages. Fuegian sprat consumption decreased throughout the years whereas squat lobster increased. Penguins consumed a higher proportion of squat lobster and Patagonian squid during the incubation stage than in the chick-rearing stages, whereas fuegian sprat was almost the only prey item consumed during the late chick-rearing stage. MPs show certain flexibility in the use of resources probably as a response to changes in prey populations. Variability in the diet among different reproductive stages could be related to changes in the distribution and abundance of their main prey near the colony during the breeding season together with changes in the energy requirements of seabirds.  相似文献

During phytoplankton monitoring in the Beagle Channel (≈54°52′ S, 67°32′ W) a previously undetected Alexandrium species was observed in coincidence with mouse bioassay toxicity. Detailed thecal plates analysis using epifluorescence and scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of the Alexandrium ostenfeldii species complex, showing a mixture of the diagnostic features usually used to discriminate between the morphospecies A. ostenfeldii and A. peruvianum. Cells of the A. ostenfeldii complex were commonly observed during spring after the main annual diatom bloom, when temperatures and salinities were respectively around 7.5–10 °C and 30–30.5 psu, and nutrients showed a seasonal decrease. Toxin analysis by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry revealed the production of 13-desmethyl spirolide C and 20-methyl spirolide G in cell cultures. The cellular contain of spirolides during exponential phase growth was 0.5906 ± 0.0032 and 0.1577 ± 0.0023 pg cell−1 for 13-desMe-C and 20-Me-G, respectively. A third unknown compound, with a structure resembling that of spirolides was also detected in culture. Moreover, an additional compound with a similar m/z (692) than that of 13-desMe-C but presenting a higher retention time (Rt = 40.5 min) was found in high proportions in mussel samples. PSP toxins were present at low concentration in mussels but were not detected in cultures. These results extend the world-wide distribution of toxic strains of the A. ostenfeldii complex to the Beagle Channel (southern South America), where toxic events have been traditionally linked to the presence of Alexandrium catenella. This is the first confirmed occurrence of spirolides in mussels and plankton from Argentina, which highlights the importance of monitoring these toxins and their producing organisms to protect public health and improve the management of shellfish resources.  相似文献

A total of 29,570 false king crab Paralomis granulosa were sampled from the Beagle Channel (54 degrees 51'S, 68 degrees 12'W), Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, between July 1996 and August 1998. Crab size varied from 6.8 to 111.2 mm carapace length (CL). A few crabs parasitized by the rhizocephalan Briarosaccus callosus were found; prevalences of externae (the rhizocephalan reproductive body) and scars (the mark left on the host after the death of the parasite) were 0.28 and 0.16%, respectively. Of 85 externae examined, 55 were non-ovigerous and 30 ovigerous. The cryptoniscid isopod Liriopsis pygmaea infested 36.5% of the B. callosus examined. The most abundant stage was the cryptonicus larva, accounting for 208 of the 238 L. pygmaea recovered. Cryptonisci showed a highly aggregated distribution. A total of 92.7% of cryptonicsci were recovered inside empty externae, suggesting that the latter were attractive to cryptonisci. Early subadult females of L. pygmaea were rare; only 3 individuals occurred inside 1 ovigerous externa. Eight late subadult and 18 adult females were found on 3 and 7 non-ovigerous externae, respectively; in addition, 1 aberrant late subadult was found on 1 ovigerous externa. In the Beagle Channel, the population of P. granulosa harbours 3 different parasites: the bopyrid isopod Pseudione tuberculata, which reaches highest prevalence at 10 to 20 mm CL, the rhizocephalan B. callosus, with highest prevalence at 20 to 40 mm CL, and the cryptoniscid isopod L. pygmaea, which mainly infests rhizocephalan on crabs >40 mm CL.  相似文献

Links between morphology and foraging strategies have been well established for many vertebrate groups. Foraging strategies of Melanerpes woodpeckers are especially variable, with at least six species being proficient flycatchers; the remainder of the better known species do not flycatch. Our objective was to examine variation in foraging tactics as it relates to skull morphology and other life history traits among these species to better understand the biology of these diverse woodpeckers. We measured eight skull characters from 241 individuals representing 19 species, but focused on eight species for which we had the most data. We used the log-geometric mean and a principal components analysis (PCA) to calculate size-scaled shape variables. Cluster analysis based on PCA scores clearly separated birds by foraging behavior. Species with similar foraging behaviors (i.e., flycatchers vs non-flycatchers) also share a number of other life history characteristics including similar plumage, diets, and migratory behavior. Diversity within Melanerpes may imply a high degree of plasticity or that species have been incorrectly placed in a polyphyletic group. Woodpeckers currently in the genus Melanerpes share few uniting characters and historically have been placed in as many as eight different genera. Additional life history, morphological, and genetic studies of the group, especially of Caribbean and Neotropical species, is warranted.  相似文献

Nest site selection of Kelp gulls Larus dominicanus breeding in Conejo and Bridges islands, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, was assessed between 14 and 30 December 2005 to describe variability in nest site features and determine variables affecting nest choice. Fourteen microhabitat variables were quantified at 40 nest sites and at 40 random points in each island during the late incubation stage. Nests at the two colonies were placed on different kinds of substrates across areas with varying degrees of cover provided either by rocks or vegetation. Despite the variability observed in nest site features, rock cover and rocky substrates were the main factors determining nest site selection. At Conejo Island, nest sites presented more rock cover, less percentage of vegetation cover and of vegetation debris substrate, and were placed further from the nearest vegetation in comparison to random points. Similarly, gulls at Bridges Island selected nest sites with more rock cover which were placed mainly on rocky and vegetation substrates. This contrasts with results previously obtained in Argentina, which indicated that vegetation is a key factor influencing Kelp gull nest site selection. Over 80% of the nests at both study colonies were placed on the northern slopes of the islands, relatively more protected from the strong prevailing southwest winds, and nests at both colonies tended to be more protected on their southern side either by rocks or vegetation. Results obtained at Tierra del Fuego confirm the plasticity of microhabitat use by Kelp gulls, and their ability to take advantage of nesting sites according to availability and local environmental factors.  相似文献

The only apex predators that live year-round at high latitudesof the Ross Sea are the Weddell seal and emperor penguin. Theseasonal distribution, foraging depths, and diet of these twospecies appear to overlap. What makes it possible for emperorpenguins and Weddell seals to co-exist at high latitude throughoutthe winter when other marine tetrapods apparently cannot? Bothspecies have similar adaptations for exploitation of the deep-waterhabitat, forage on the same species, and routinely make longand deep dives. Yet, despite these similarities, there is probablylittle trophic overlap between the adults of both species dueto geographical and seasonal differences in habitat use. Forexample, during the winter months while female emperor penguinsare ranging widely in the pack ice, adult seals are foragingand fattening for the upcoming summer fast, literally beneaththe feet of the male penguins. However, there is more extensiveoverlap between juvenile seals and adult penguins, and shiftsin prey abundance and/or distribution would likely affect thesetwo groups similarly. In contrast, juvenile penguins appearto avoid inter- and intra- specific competition by leaving theRoss Sea once they molt.  相似文献

In the Beagle Channel, southern South America (ca. 55°S 67°W), about 20% of false king crabs (Paralomis granulosa) >80 mm carapace length are fouled with the barnacle Notobalanus flosculus. To evaluate differences in growth rates of barnacles attached to artificial and live substrates, clay tiles were anchored as collectors to the bottom at two different sites in the Beagle Channel in September 1996: in Ushuaia harbour (low currents and high levels of suspended matter) and around the Bridges Islands (strong currents and low level of suspended matter). Another set of collectors was deployed at the same sites in October 1998 to collect barnacles for histological studies. Tiles were removed from each place, approximately, on a monthly basis. Carapaces of P. granulosa with the epizoic N. flosculus were sampled between November 1996 and 1997, and between March 1998 and September 1999, to study sexual maturation of barnacles. Growth of barnacles was compared between the collectors and P. granulosa carapaces following a qualitative approach. A sexual maturity scale was defined, based on the stage of development of the female reproductive apparatus of N. flosculus. Growth rate of barnacles was highest in the harbour, intermediate on P. granulosa, and lowest around the Bridges Islands. Presence of oocytes was registered only in epizoic barnacles, suggesting that at least a proportion of these individuals is able to spawn on the carapaces. The potential advantages of settling on a living substrate, namely increased availability of food particles and decreased predation risks are discussed.  相似文献

We determined the efficiency of thermoregulation by the southernmost liolaemids Liolaemus sarmientoi and L. magellanicus from Patagonia, Argentina (51°S), by measuring body (Tb), microenvironmental, and operative temperatures in the field, and preferred body temperatures in the laboratory (Tpref). L. sarmientoi was found to be a poor thermoregulator, whereas L. magellanicus was deemed to be a constrained thermoconformer. Among all known species of Liolaemus, L. sarmientoi and L. magellanicus had the lowest Tb's when tested in the field; however, their Tpref's were similar to other liolaemids. These data suggest that these southernmost liolaemid species have not evolved appropriate thermoregulatory behaviors or made adequate physiological adaptations to face the extreme thermal challenges of their environment.  相似文献

Summary Humboldt Penguins diving in clear water in Chile had two distinct behaviours; short dives where the birds remained within a metre of the surface and bounce dives, where the penguins descended the water column to the sea bed where they immediately returned to the surface. Here, dive time was correlated with water depth. Stomach pumped penguins had eaten predominantly pelagic school fish,Scomberesox, Engraulis andSardinops. Most prey (94 %) had been seized from below. We suggest that short, shallow dives are typical of travelling penguins. Bounce dives, however, would enable foraging penguins, which have an enhanced binocular field above the line of the bill, to perceive surface-swimming prey more easily because silvery clupeid fish appear as silhouettes.
Zusammenfassung In klaren Gewässern in Chile tauchende Humboldt-Pinguine zeigten zwei deutlich verschiedene Verhaltensweisen.

In two populations of Patella vulgata in the Isle of Man foraging activity is restricted to daytime high waters, with about 75 per cent of the population foraging on any one day. Movement commences as the tide covers the limpets, and they travel an average of 0·4 m from their home sites to which they return at least an hour before the falling tide exposes them again. The mean speed on the outward and return journey is around 0·60 cm min?, and during the intervening browsing period about 0·08 cm min?. This behaviour contrasts with that of the same species in Alderney, where foraging is limited to nocturnal low waters: there is possibly a geographical trend in behaviour. P. vulgata, especially in the Isle of Man, is one of the more mobile limpets.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Patagonotothen tessellata (Richardson 1845) in the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina was analysed from weekly captures over a 3-year period (1987–1989). The spawning periods and lengths thereof were analysed using GSI curves and monthly percentage distributions of maturation stages. Two gonadal maturation cycles and two spawning periods (winter and summer) within 1 year were defined. Also discussed is whether the same specimens are able to mate successfully in winter and summer, and whether the reproductive effort varies between the seasons. Male parental behaviour and the likely consequences on their energy levels are considered.  相似文献

We quantified the trophic niche of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) breeding and moulting in Golfo San Jorge, Argentina, through conventional stomach content and stable isotope analysis. A total of 112 adults were flushed during the early and late chick stages of 2011 and 2012 at Isla Vernacci Norte, and at least 15 prey taxa were found, including fishes, cephalopods, crustaceans and polychaetes. Overall, Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) showed the highest contribution in terms of importance by mass (68.1–85.3%, depending on chick stage and year), except for the old chick stage in 2011 when the shortfin squid (Illex argentinus) was the main prey consumed (56.0%). Based on carbon and nitrogen isotopic values from a total of 256 blood samples, corresponding to young and old chicks and to adults of both sexes sampled throughout the incubation, chick and moult stages at the above mentioned colony and years, Bayesian mixing model outputs showed that Argentine anchovy was always the main prey (48–86%). Bayesian mixing model outputs obtained from adults of both sexes and their chicks during the late chick stage of 2013 at Isla Vernacci Norte, Isla Tova and Isla Leones also showed that Argentine anchovy was the main prey consumed. This is the first comprehensive assessment of Magellanic penguin diet composition in northern Patagonia, quantifying the relative contribution of prey in the diet of adults and chicks at different stages of the annual cycle and years, and confirms the relevance of a forage fish such as the Argentine anchovy in its trophic ecology.  相似文献

The rock shag (Phalacrocorax magellanicus) is an endemic species from southern Argentina and Chile. In Argentina, the population is distributed along the Patagonian coast in 143 small colonies (5–377 pairs). We studied colony and nest site fidelity of rock shags at Punta Loma, Patagonia, Argentina. We banded 37 adults from December 2001 to June 2003, during two breeding and two non-breeding seasons. Nest site fidelity was extremely high during consecutive breeding and also non-breeding seasons. The high percentage of banded birds residing in the colony in consecutive seasons suggests that rock shags are highly faithful to breeding sites and supports the idea of low post-breeding dispersion.  相似文献
