The aim of this study was to compare the effect of preexercise breakfast containing high- and low-glycemic index (GI) carbohydrate (CHO) (2.5g CHO/kg body mass) on muscle glycogen metabolism. On two occasions, 14 days apart, seven trained men ran at 71% maximal oxygen uptake for 30 min on a treadmill. Three hours before exercise, in a randomized order, subjects consumed either isoenergetic high- (HGI) or low-GI (LGI) CHO breakfasts that provided (per 70 kg body mass) 3.43 MJ energy, 175 g CHO, 21 g protein, and 4 g fat. The incremental areas under the 3-h plasma glucose and serum insulin response curves after the HGI meal were 3.9- (P < 0.05) and 1.4-fold greater (P < 0.001), respectively, than those after the LGI meal. During the 3-h postprandial period, muscle glycogen concentration increased by 15% (P < 0.05) after the HGI meal but remained unchanged after the LGI meal. Muscle glycogen utilization during exercise was greater in the HGI (129.1 +/- 16.1 mmol/kg dry mass) compared with the LGI (87.9 +/- 15.1 mmol/kg dry mass; P < 0.01) trial. Although the LGI meal contributed less CHO to muscle glycogen synthesis in the 3-h postprandial period compared with the HGI meal, a sparing of muscle glycogen utilization during subsequent exercise was observed in the LGI trial, most likely as a result of better maintained fat oxidation.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to compare the carbohydrate use of insulin-resistant obese Zucker rats with that of their lean littermates during steady-state exercise. Obese and lean rats were randomly assigned to a sedentary group or to a run group in which rats ran at 72-73% of their maximal O2 consumption, with the duration of exercise set to require an energy expenditure of 2.1-2.2 kcal. During the run the respiratory exchange ratio was significantly higher in the obese than in the lean rats [0.94 +/- 0.01 (SE) and 0.86 +/- 0.01, respectively], which indicate that the obese rats required 54% more carbohydrate than the lean rats. Total muscle glycogen utilization in the soleus, plantaris, and red and white gastrocnemius was not different between groups. Obese rats had total liver glycogen values five times greater than those of lean rats (833.38 +/- 101.4 and 152.8 +/- 37.5 mg, respectively) and utilized twice as much liver glycogen as their lean littermates (193.5 and 90.4 mg, respectively). The obese rats exhibited higher blood glucose and insulin concentrations than the lean rats during the run. These findings indicate that, despite their characteristic insulin resistance, the obese Zucker rats had a greater dependency on carbohydrate as a substrate during exercise than their lean littermates and that the major source of this carbohydrate was liver glycogen.  相似文献

Gender differences in the changes substrates of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism as well as in adrenaline, noradrenaline, growth hormone, insulin and cortisol were investigated in 24 women and 24 men during exhaustive endurance exercise. Training history and current performance capacity were taken into consideration in the design of the study. Since previous papers present conflicting results the purpose of the present study was to obtain further information regarding possible gender differences in lipid metabolism and its regulation by hormones. Non-endurance-trained women and men each ran 10 km on a treadmill at an intensity of 75% of VO2max; endurance-trained women and men ran 14 and 17 km, respectively, at an intensity of 80% of VO2max. Blood glucose levels in non-endurance-trained women were higher when compared to non-endurance-trained men. This might be explained by increased mobilization of free fatty acids from intramuscular fat depots during energy production in non-specifically trained women. In contrast, no substantial gender differences in endurance-trained persons were seen in lipid metabolism. The changes in substrates of lipid metabolism confirm the higher lipolytic activity and greater utilization of free fatty acids in endurance-trained persons. During endurance exercise, changes in adrenaline, noradrenaline, growth hormone, insulin and cortisol were not substantially affected by the sex of the subjects. This study does not present any conclusive results that endurance-trained persons show gender differences in lipid metabolism and major regulatory hormones.  相似文献

In a randomized, balanced, crossover study each of six fit, adult horses ran on a treadmill at 50% of maximal rate of oxygen consumption for 60 min after being denied access to food for 18 h and then 1) fed corn (51.4 kJ/kg digestible energy), or 2) fed an isocaloric amount of alfalfa 2-3 h before exercise, or 3) not fed before exercise. Feeding corn, compared with fasting, resulted in higher plasma glucose and serum insulin and lower serum nonesterified fatty acid concentrations before exercise (P < 0.05) and in lower plasma glucose, serum glycerol, and serum nonesterified fatty acid concentrations and higher skeletal muscle utilization of blood-borne glucose during exercise (P < 0.05). Feeding corn, compared with feeding alfalfa, resulted in higher carbohydrate oxidation and lower lipid oxidation during exercise (P < 0.05). Feeding a soluble carbohydrate-rich meal (corn) to horses before exercise results in increased muscle utilization of blood-borne glucose and carbohydrate oxidation and in decreased lipid oxidation compared with a meal of insoluble carbohydrate (alfalfa) or not feeding. Carbohydrate feedings did not produce a sparing of muscle glycogen compared with fasting.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate alterations in excretion of urea and total nitrogen after6-8 weeks of daily exercise and to establish if the capacity for amino acid oxidation in muscle is influenced by endurance training. Urea nitrogen excretion was increased in trained compared with untrained rats and nitrogen balance was less positive in trained than in untrained rats. Increased [14C]leucine oxidation with training was observed both in vivo and in vitro. The results of this study demonstrate that amino acid catabolism is increased during exercise training and that the muscle enzymes involved in leucine oxidation adapt to endurance training in a manner similar to the enzymes of carbohydrate and fat catabolism.  相似文献

The present study examined the effects of training status (endurance exercise or body building) on nitrogen balance, body composition, and urea excretion during periods of habitual and altered protein intakes. Experiments were performed on six elite bodybuilders, six elite endurance athletes, and six sedentary controls during a 10-day period of normal protein intake followed by a 10-day period of altered protein intake. The nitrogen balance data revealed that bodybuilders required 1.12 times and endurance athletes required 1.67 times more daily protein than sedentary controls. Lean body mass (density) was maintained in bodybuilders consuming 1.05 g protein.kg-1.day-1. Endurance athletes excreted more total daily urea than either bodybuilders or controls. We conclude that bodybuilders during habitual training require a daily protein intake only slightly greater than that for sedentary individuals in the maintenance of lean body mass and that endurance athletes require daily protein intakes greater than either bodybuilders or sedentary individuals to meet the needs of protein catabolism during exercise.  相似文献

We examined the influence of various carbohydrates of fuel homeostasis and glycogen utilization during prolonged exercise. Seventy-five grams of glucose, fructose, or placebo were given orally to eight healthy males 45 min before ergometer exercise performed for 2 h at 55% of maximal aerobic power (VO2max). After glucose ingestion, the rises in plasma glucose (P less than 0.01) and insulin (P less than 0.001) were 2.4- and 5.8-fold greater than when fructose was consumed. After 30 min of exercise following glucose ingestion, the plasma glucose concentration had declined to a nadir of 3.9 +/- 0.3 mmol/l, and plasma insulin had returned to basal levels. The fall in plasma glucose was closely related to the preexercise glucose (r = 0.98, P less than 0.001) and insulin (r = 0.66, P less than 0.05) levels. The rate of endogenous glucose production and utilization rose similarly by 2.8-fold during exercise in fructose group and were 10-15% higher than in placebo group (P less than 0.05). Serum free fatty acid levels were 1.5- to 2-fold higher (P less than 0.01) after placebo than carbohydrate ingestion. Muscle glycogen concentration in the quadriceps femoris fell in all three groups by 60-65% (P less than 0.001) during exercise. These data indicate that fructose ingestion, though causing smaller perturbations in plasma glucose, insulin, and gastrointestinal polypeptide (GIP) levels than glucose ingestion, was no more effective than glucose or placebo in sparing glycogen during a long-term exercise.  相似文献

The effect of a high-carbohydrate meal 4 h before 105 min of exercise at 70% of maximal O2 uptake was determined in seven endurance-trained cyclists and compared with exercise following a 16-h fast. The preexercise meal produced a transient elevation of plasma insulin and blood glucose, which returned to fasting basal levels prior to the initiation of exercise. The meal also resulted in a 42% elevation (P less than 0.05) of glycogen within the vastus lateralis at the beginning of exercise. The 1st h of exercise when subjects were fed was characterized by a 13-25% decline (P less than 0.05) in blood glucose concentration, a suppression of the normal increase in plasma free fatty acids and blood glycerol, and a 45% (P less than 0.05) greater rate of carbohydrate oxidation compared with exercise when subjects were fasted. After 105 min of exercise, there were no significant differences when subjects were fed or fasted regarding blood glucose levels, rate of carbohydrate oxidation, or muscle glycogen concentration. The greater muscle glycogen utilization (97 +/- 18 vs. 64 +/- 8 mmol glucosyl units X kg-1; P less than 0.05) and carbohydrate oxidation when subjects were fed appeared to be derived from the glycogen synthesized following the meal. These results indicate that preexercise feedings alter substrate availability despite a return of plasma insulin to fasting levels prior to exercise and that these effects persist until the 2nd h of exercise.  相似文献

Stimulation of AMPK and decreased glycogen levels in skeletal muscle have a deep involvement in enhanced insulin action and GLUT-4 protein content after exercise training. The present study examined the chronic effects of a continuous low-carbohydrate diet after long-term exercise on GLUT-4 protein content, glycogen content, AMPK, and insulin signaling in skeletal muscle. Rats were divided randomly into four groups: normal chow diet sedentary (N-Sed), low carbohydrate diet sedentary (L-Sed), normal chow diet exercise (N-Ex), and low carbohydrate diet exercise (L-Ex) groups. Rats in the exercise groups (N-Ex and L-Ex) were exercised by swimming for 6 hours/day in two 3-hour bouts separated by 45 minutes of rest. The 10-day exercise training resulted in a significant increase in the GLUT-4 protein content (p<0.01). Additionally, the GLUT-4 protein content in L-Ex rats was increased by 29% above that in N-Ex rats (p<0.01). Finally, the glycogen content in skeletal muscle of L-Ex rats was decreased compared with that of N-Ex rats. Taken together, we suggest that the maintenance of glycogen depletion after exercise by continuous low carbohydrate diet results in the increment of the GLUT-4 protein content in skeletal muscle.  相似文献

Five male cyclists were studied during 2 h of cycle ergometer exercise (70% VO2 max) on two occasions to examine the effect of carbohydrate ingestion on muscle glycogen utilization. In the experimental trial (CHO) subjects ingested 250 ml of a glucose polymer solution containing 30 g of carbohydrate at 0, 30, 60, and 90 min of exercise; in the control trial (CON) they received an equal volume of a sweet placebo. No differences between trials were seen in O2 uptake or heart rate during exercise. Venous blood glucose was similar before exercise in both trials, but, on average, was higher during exercise in CHO [5.2 +/- 0.2 (SE) mmol/l] compared with CON (4.8 +/- 0.1, P less than 0.05). Plasma insulin levels were similar in both trials. Muscle glycogen levels were also similar in CHO and CON both before and after exercise; accordingly, there was no difference between trials in the amount of glycogen used during the 2 h of exercise (CHO = 62.8 +/- 10.1 mmol/kg wet wt, CON = 56.9 +/- 10.1). The results of this study indicate that carbohydrate ingestion does not influence the utilization of muscle glycogen during prolonged strenuous exercise.  相似文献

Metabolic effects of an overnight fast (postabsorptive state, PA) or a 3.5-day fast (fasted state, F) were compared in eight healthy young men at rest and during exercise to exhaustion at 45% maximum O2 uptake. Glucose rate of appearance (Ra) and disappearance (Rd) were calculated from plasma glucose enrichment during a primed, continuous infusion of [6,6-2H]glucose. Serum substrates and insulin levels were measured and glycogen content of the vastus lateralis was determined in biopsies taken before and after exercise. At rest, whole-body glucose flux (determined by the deuterated tracer) and carbohydrate oxidation (determined from respiratory exchange ratio) were lower in F than PA, but muscle glycogen levels were similar. During exercise, glucose flux, whole-body carbohydrate oxidation, and the rate of muscle glycogen utilization were significantly lower during the fast. In the PA state, glucose Ra and Rd increased together throughout exercise. However, in the F state Ra exceeded Rd during the 1st h of exercise, causing an increase in plasma glucose to levels similar to those of the PA state. The increase in glucose flux was markedly less throughout F exercise. Lower carbohydrate utilization in the F state was accompanied by higher circulating fatty acids and ketone bodies, lower plasma insulin levels, and the maintenance of physical performance reflected by similar time to exhaustion.  相似文献

We compared nutrient selection in a laboratory culture of the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana: Insecta, Blattodea) and a feral population which was founded by escapees from the culture approximately 14 generations prior to the study. In a first experiment, adult male and female cockroaches were provided with two nutritionally complementary synthetic foods, and thus allowed to select the protein and carbohydrate components of their diet independently. There were no differences in the amounts of carbohydrate eaten by the two populations. However, feral males ingested more protein than cultured males. In a second experiment, the construction of nitrogen budgets showed that the additional nitrogen ingested by feral males was allocated preferentially to accessory sex glands, rather than somatic tissue or excretion via the faeces. This suggests a possible role for sexual selection in the dietary difference between the strains. By contrast with males, there was no statistically significant difference in the amount of protein eaten by females of the two populations. However, feral females were found to have a higher density of bacterial endosymbionts than cultured females. Since these symbionts are involved in the synthesis of essential amino acids, this might account for greater reproductive output observed in a previous study in the feral compared with the culture females.  相似文献

Male and female Wistar rats were run for 5 min at 1.7 mph at a 17% grade to determine whether a sex difference exists in the rate of glycogen resynthesis during recovery in fast-twitch red muscle, fast-twitch white muscle, and liver. Rats were killed at one of three time points: immediately after the exercise bout, and at 1 or 4 h later. Males had significantly higher resting muscle glycogen levels (P less than 0.05). Exercise resulted in significant glycogen depletion in both sexes (P less than 0.01). Males utilized approximately 50% more glycogen during the exercise bout than females (P less than 0.05). During the food-restricted 4-h recovery period, muscle glycogen was repleted significantly during the 1st h (P less than 0.05). Liver glycogen was not depleted as a result of the exercise bout, but fell during the first h of recovery (P less than 0.05) and remained low during the subsequent 3 h. The greater glycogen utilization in red and white fast-twitch muscle during exercise by males could represent a true sex difference but could also be attributable in part to the males having performed more work as a result of 20% greater body mass. We conclude that no sex difference was observed in the rates of muscle glycogen repletion after exercise or in liver glycogen metabolism during and after exercise, and rapid postexercise muscle glycogen repletion occurred at a time of accelerated liver glycogen depletion.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to find by which mechanisms an increased availability of plasma free fatty acids (FFA) reduced carbohydrate utilization during exercise. Rats were fed high-protein medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), high-protein long-chain triglycerides (LCT), carbohydrate (CHO) or high-protein low-fat (HP) diets for 5 weeks, and liver and muscle glycogen, gluconeogenesis and FFA oxidation were studied in rested and trained runner rats. In the rested state the hepatic glycogen store was decreased by fat and protein feeding, whereas soleus muscle glycogen concentration was only affected by high-protein diets. The percentage decrease in liver and muscle glycogen stores, after running, was similar in fat-fed, high-protein and CHO-fed rats. The fact that plasma glucose did not drastically change during exercise could be explained by a stimulation of hepatic gluconeogenesis: the activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) and liver phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) concentration increased as well as cyclic adenosine monophosphate (AMPc) while liver fructose 2,6-bisphosphate decreased and plasma FFA rose. In contrast, the stimulation of gluconeogenesis in rested HP-, MCT- and LCT-fed rats appears to be independent of cyclic AMP.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of insulin on skeletal muscle GLUT-4 protein expression and glycogen storage after postexercise carbohydrate supplementation. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to one of six treatment groups: sedentary control (Con), Con with streptozocin (Stz/C), immediately postexercise (Ex0), Ex0 with Stz (Stz/Ex0), 5-h postexercise (Ex5), and Ex5 with Stz (Stz/Ex5). Rats were exercised by swimming (2 bouts of 3 h) and carbohydrate supplemented immediately after each exercise session by glucose intubation (1 ml of a 50% wt/vol). Stz was administered 72-h before exercise, which resulted in hyperglycemia and elimination of the insulin response to the carbohydrate supplement. GLUT-4 protein of Ex0 rats was 30% above Con in fast-twitch (FT) red and 21% above Con in FT white muscle. In Ex5, GLUT-4 protein was 52% above Con in FT red and 47% above Con in FT white muscle. Muscle glycogen in FT red and white muscle was also increased above Con in Ex5 rats. Neither GLUT-4 protein nor muscle glycogen was increased above Con in Stz/Ex0 or Stz/Ex5 rats. GLUT-4 mRNA in FT red muscle of Ex0 rats was 61% above Con but only 33% above Con in Ex5 rats. GLUT-4 mRNA in FT red muscle of Stz/C and Stz/Ex0 rats was similar but significantly elevated in Ex5/Stz rats. These results suggest that insulin is essential for the increase in GLUT-4 protein expression following postexercise carbohydrate supplementation.  相似文献

This study examined the ability of well-trained eumenorrheic women to increase muscle glycogen content and endurance performance in response to a high-carbohydrate diet (HCD; approximately 78% carbohydrate) compared with a moderate-carbohydrate diet (MD; approximately 48% carbohydrate) when tested during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Six women cycled to exhaustion at approximately 80% maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2 max)) after each of the randomly assigned diet and exercise-tapering regimens. A biopsy was taken from the vastus lateralis before and after exercise in each trial. Preexercise muscle glycogen content was high after the MD (625.2 +/- 50.1 mmol/kg dry muscle) and 13% greater after the HCD (709.0 +/- 44.8 mmol/kg dry muscle). Postexercise muscle glycogen was low after both trials (MD, 91.4 +/- 34.5; HCD, 80.3 +/- 19.5 mmol/kg dry muscle), and net glycogen utilization during exercise was greater after the HCD. The subjects also cycled longer at approximately 80% VO(2 max) after the HCD vs. MD (115:31 +/- 10:47 vs. 106:35 +/- 8:36 min:s, respectively). In conclusion, aerobically trained women increased muscle glycogen content in response to a high-dietary carbohydrate intake during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, but the magnitude was smaller than previously observed in men. The increase in muscle glycogen, and possibly liver glycogen, after the HCD was associated with increased cycling performance to volitional exhaustion at approximately 80% VO(2 max).  相似文献

We previously reported that endurance training increases amino acid catabolism. In this study, the effects of an acute endurance exercise bout on tissue protein levels and urea excretion have been investigated. Exhaustive exercising of trained rats resulted in an increase in ammonia excretion but there was no significant change in urea excretion. Protein levels of muscle and liver were significantly decreased by an exhaustive bout of exercise. In muscle, both the soluble and myofibrillar protein fractions were decreased in exhausted rats. These results demonstrate that during exercise there is a net loss of protein in muscle and liver.  相似文献

Post-exercise ketosis is known to be suppressed by physical training and by a high carbohydrate diet. As a result it has often been presumed, but not proven, that the development of post-exercise ketosis is closely related to the glycogen content of the liver. We therefore studied the effect of 1 h of treadmill running on the blood 3-hydroxybutyrate and liver and muscle glycogen concentrations of carbohydrate-loaded trained (n = 72) and untrained rats (n = 72). Resting liver and muscle glycogen levels were 25%-30% higher in the trained than in the untrained animals. The resting 3-hydroxybutyrate concentrations of both groups of rats were very low: less than 0.08 mmol.l-1. Exercise did not significantly influence the blood 3-hydroxybutyrate concentrations of trained rats, but caused a marked post-exercise ketosis (1.40 +/- 0.40 mmol.l-1 h after exercise) in the untrained animals, the time-course of which was the approximate inverse of the changes in liver glycogen concentration. Interpreting the results in the light of similar data obtained after a normal and low carbohydrate diet it has been concluded that trained animals probably owe their relative resistance to post-exercise ketosis to their higher liver glycogen concentrations as well as to greater peripheral stores of mobilizable carbohydrate.  相似文献

We studied the effects of ingesting either a snack food (S) (260 kcal) or placebo (P) 30 min before intermittent cycle exercise at 70% maximal O2 consumption on endurance performance and muscle glycogen depletion in eight healthy human males. Immediately before exercise there were significantly greater increases in plasma glucose (PG) (S +28 +/- 9.7; P +0.1 +/- 0.8 mg/dl) and insulin (S +219 +/- 61.5; P -7 +/- 5.5 pmol/l) (P less than 0.05) following S feeding compared with P. These differences were no longer present by the end of the first exercise period. There were no differences in endurance times (S 52 +/- 6.4; P 48 +/- 5.6 min) or in the extent of muscle glycogen depletion following exercise (S 56 +/- 14.7; P 50 +/- 15.5 micrograms/mg protein) between the two groups. PG was maintained at base-line (prefeeding) concentrations following S, whereas there was a tendency for PG to steadily decrease after P. Total grams of carbohydrate oxidized during exercise did not differ between the two groups (S 120; P 118 g). These results demonstrate that the ingestion of a mixed-macronutrient snack 30 min before exercise does not impair endurance performance nor increase the extent of muscle glycogen depletion during high-intensity cycle exercise in untrained adult male subjects.  相似文献
