The roots of Launaea mucronata afforded, in addition to lactucin, lactucin-8-O-acetate and the corresponding dihydro derivative, 11β,13-dihydrolactucin.     

Eriolanolides,eudesmanolides and a rearranged sesquiterpene from Eriophyllum species

The investigation of two Eriophyllum species afforded, in addition to numerous known compounds, eight new sesquiterpene lactones related to eriolanin, two eudesmanolides and a new type of sesquiterpene alcohol. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and a few chemical transformations. The chemotaxonomic situation of this genus, the placement of which is still in doubt, is discussed briefly.     

Uspallatine,a pyrrolizidine alkaloid from senecio uspallatensis

A new pyrrolizidine alkaloid uspallatine was isolated from roots of Senecio uspailatensis together with the previously known retrorsine. The structure of the new alkaloid was established by spectroscopical data and chemical transformation.

Helianthol a,a sesquiterpene alcohol from Helianthus tuberosus

A new sesquiterpene alcohol, helianthol A, was isolated from the aerial parts of Helianthus tuberosus. The structure of this compound has been established as (+)-2-methyl-6-[4-methyl-3′-cyclohexen-1′-(R)-yl]-3,6-heptadien-2-ol by chemical and spectroscopic methods.     

Ant-repellent sesquiterpene lactones from Eupatorium quadrangularae

The chloroform extract from the leaves of Eupatorium quadrangularae has been systematically fractionated by following biological activity in a bioassay which measures repellency to the leafcutter ant Atta cephalotes (Formicidae, Attini). Several sesquiterpene lactones were isolated, two of which showed significant ant-repellency.     

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids from Senecio cacaliaster

Four pyrrolizidine alkaloids have been isolated from Senecio cacaliaster and their structures analysed by spectroscopic methods (IR, mass, ¹H, ¹³CNMR). One of them is new and the name sencalenine (3) is proposed. Alkaloids O⁷-senecioylretronecine (1) and 7-senecioyl-9-sarracinylretronecine (2) have recently been identified elsewhere. The fourth is bulgarsenine (4) which was isolated from a Senecio species before.     

Stereostructures of inunal and isoalloalantolactone,two biologically active sesquiterpene lactones from Inula racemosa

Two new sesquiterpene lactones, inunal and isoalloalantolactone, have been isolated from Inula racemosa. Inunal, an aldehydolactone, displays considerable biological activity as a plant growth regulator. Structures have been assigned to these compounds on the basis of spectral data and chemical correlation with alantolactone and isotelekin.     

Seven sesquiterpene lactones from Ferreyanthus species

The investigation of two Ferreyanthus species afforded seven germacranolides which have not been isolated previously. Two derivatives of linalol were also present. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. Chemotaxonomic relationships are briefly discussed.
