Study of the Belohdelie frontal has demonstrated that this four-million-year-old specimen belongs to a very generalized hominid that may be close to the divergence point of the hominid and African ape clades. Features associated with the temporalis muscle in the Belohdelie frontal and other new hominids from Hadar (AL 333-125) and West Turkana (KNM-ER 17000) suggest that the earliest hominids shared a large anterior component of this muscle relative to the extinct and extant apes. Results of this study support the phylogenetic hypothesis put forward by many workers that A. afarensis gave rise to the “robust” Australopithecus and A. africanus clades.  相似文献

The hominine grade of organization should preferably be defined by those morphological characters of the braincase and face which are first recognizable in Homo erectus. Provisionally, then, Olduvai hominid 24 and East Rudolf 1470 are regarded as protanthropine, irrespective of whether they both belong to “Homo habilis” or not. It is possible that either or both of these hominids can be considered directly prehominine, while A. africanus reflects an earlier prehominine stage.  相似文献

New studies have been made on endocranial casts of Olduvai specimens of Homo habilis. The results have been compared with those on other East African H. habilis and other hominoids. The mean absolute endocranial capacity of H. habilis is appreciably larger than the mean for australopithecine species: on the new estimates, the H. habilis mean is 45·1% greater than the A. africanus mean and 24·8% greater than that of A. boisei. New data for relative brain size, expressed by Jerison's Nc and EQ and Hemmer's CC, strongly confirm that it was with H. habilis that there appeared the remarkable autapomorphy of Homo, disproportionate expansion of the brain. Encephalometric studies reveal marked transverse expansion of the cerebrum, especially the frontal and parieto-occipital parts, in H. habilis and increased bulk of the frontal and parietal lobes, a derived feature of Homo. There is moderate cerebral heightening, but little or no cerebral lengthening. The sulcal and gyral pattern of the lateral part of the frontal lobe of H. habilis differs from those of Australopithecus and resembles the derived pattern of Homo. The inferior parietal lobule is prominently developed—an autapomorphy of Homo. The two major cerebral areas governing spoken language in modern man are well represented in the endocasts of H. habilis, a functionally important autapomorphy of Homo. The pattern of middle meningeal vessels is more complex with more anastomoses than in australopithecines: H. habilis shares this derived feature with later forms of Homo. In all these features, the brain of H. habilis had made major advances, beyond the more ape-like australopithecine brain. With H. habilis, cerebral evolution had progressed beyond the stage of “animal hominids” (Australopithecus spp.) to that of “human hominids” (Homo spp.). In functional capacity, in particular, its possession of a structural marker of the neurological basis of spoken language, H. habilis had attained a new evolutionary level of organization.  相似文献

Hominin fossils of gracile and robust australopith groups were found both in East and in South Africa. It is unclear, however, whether all robusts belong to a monophyletic Paranthropus clade, as the craniofacial resemblance among robust australopiths might only be a superficial correlate of similar masticatory adaptations and not evidence of shared ancestry. It has been suggested that the East African Australopithecus/Paranthropus boisei and the South African A./P. robustus might be convergent allometric variants of their gracile geographical neighbors A. afarensis and A. africanus. Here we approach the phylogenetic questions about robust and gracile australopiths from an ??evo-devo?? perspective, examining how simple alterations of development could contribute to the shape differences among hominin species. Using geometric morphometrics we compare gracile and robust australopith crania in the context of the allometric scaling patterns of Pan troglodytes, P. paniscus, and Gorilla gorilla. We examine support for two alternative evolutionary scenarios based on predictions derived from quantitative genetics models: either (1) A./P. robustus evolved in South Africa from the gracile A. africanus, or (2) A./P. robustus is a local variant of the eastern African A./P. boisei. We use developmental simulations to demonstrate that some robust characteristics (wide faces, anteriorly placed zygomatics, and facial dishing) can be predicted by allometric scaling along the ontogenetic trajectory of the gracile A. africanus. We find, however, that the facial differences between A. africanus specimens (Taung, Sts 5, Sts 71, and Stw 505) and A./P. robustus specimen SK 48 cannot be explained by allometric scaling alone. Facial shape differences between A./P. robustus SK 48 and A./P. boisei (KNM-ER 732, KNM-ER 406, OH 5) and the A./P. aethiopicus specimen KNM-WT 17000, on the other hand, can largely be explained by allometric scaling. This is consistent with a close evolutionary relationship of these robust taxa.  相似文献

The relationship between breadth and height of the mandibular corpus has been investigated in a sample of 77 hominid mandibles. An interspecific allometric increase in robusticity with size occurs between four taxonomic subgroups of Australopithecus, but subgroups of Homo vary in robusticity while differing little in size. Within taxonomic subgroups, variation in breadth is not significantly related to variation in height among the “gracile” australapithecines; however, it is isometrically related to height in the “robust” australopithecines and bears an allometric relationship to height in Homo. Thus, robusticity, in conjunction with size, may provide a useful indicator of the taxonomic affinities of hominid mandibles.  相似文献

Aspergillus flavus is a common filamentous fungus that produces aflatoxins and presents a major threat to agriculture and human health. Previous phylogenetic studies of A. flavus have shown that it consists of two subgroups, called groups I and II, and morphological studies indicated that it consists of two morphological groups based on sclerotium size, called “S” and “L.” The industrially important non-aflatoxin-producing fungus A. oryzae is nested within group I. Three different gene regions, including part of a gene involved in aflatoxin biosynthesis (omt12), were sequenced in 33 S and L strains of A. flavus collected from various regions around the world, along with three isolates of A. oryzae and two isolates of A. parasiticus that were used as outgroups. The production of B and G aflatoxins and cyclopiazonic acid was analyzed in the A. flavus isolates, and each isolate was identified as “S” or “L” based on sclerotium size. Phylogenetic analysis of all three genes confirmed the inference that group I and group II represent a deep divergence within A. flavus. Most group I strains produced B aflatoxins to some degree, and none produced G aflatoxins. Four of six group II strains produced both B and G aflatoxins. All group II isolates were of the “S” sclerotium phenotype, whereas group I strains consisted of both “S” and “L” isolates. Based on the omt12 gene region, phylogenetic structure in sclerotium phenotype and aflatoxin production was evident within group I. Some non-aflatoxin-producing isolates of group I had an omt12 allele that was identical to that found in isolates of A. oryzae.  相似文献

A review of species in the genus Praon Haliday, 1833 is presented. Twenty described species are keyed and illustrated with scanning electron micrographs and line drawings. The Praon species presented in this work have been identified from 67 aphid taxa occurring on 120 plant taxa. Furthermore, 87 original parasitoid–aphid–plant associations of the species mentioned in the key are presented. Phylogenetic relationships among Praon species are reconstructed using parsimony and cladistic distance methods. Praon abjectum is the sister taxon to the remaining Praon species. We recognized three species group: “Parapraon”, “dorsale-yomenae” and “rosaecola”. Monophyly is suggested for “Parapraon” species group and paraphyly for “dorsale-yomenae” group. Finally, by phylogenetic reconstruction, a close phylogenetic relationship between “Parapraon” and “dorsale-yomenae” species group was found.  相似文献

We have investigated the nature of the sequence heterogeneity of the minicircles of Crithidia luciliae kinetoplast DNA by EM heteroduplex analysis of minicircles cleaved with endonuclease HindIII. Approximately 40% of the minicircles showed—after denaturation and reannealing—structures indicative of sequence rearrangements: the majority contained heteroduplex “eyes” interpreted as due to inversions; about 10% of the heteroduplexes yielded structures interpreted as due to translocations and a similar fraction showed insertions and deletions. The category of “eyed” molecules was analyzed in detail: four minicircle segments were found that displayed a high incidence of such eyes indicating that the rearrangements were not scattered at random over the minicircles. Moreover, since also “eyes” were found overlapping two or three of the four regions, we postulate that these segments are capable of recombining with each other. We conclude that specific segmental rearrangements form the main basis of the minicircle sequence heterogeneity in Crithidia.  相似文献

The complete dentition of the common ancestor ofAustralopithecus andHomo, intermediate between that of a pongid and a hominid, is virtually unknown. The maxillary dentition (P3-M2) ofRamapithecus brevirostris Lewis, 1934, a pongid from the Early Pliocene, and that of hominids from the Late Pliocene and Plio/Pleistocene is known. SinceR. brevirostris is probably ancestral to the hominids, a model of intermediate maxillary dentition (P3-M2) is extrapolated and described. The model represents a hypothetical protohominid dentition. It does not conform with the teeth ofAustralopithecus, but shows greater morphological affinity to hominine dentition and to 5 myo hominids. TheHomo lineage, therefore, may go back to the Middle Pliocene. According to the normal sequence of evolution, it is most unlikely thatAustralopithecus gave rise toHomo, but much more probable that a very early, generalizedHomo evolved into an advanced, specializedAustralopithecus.  相似文献

Conventionally, Lepus capensis is considered to range across large parts of Africa, the Middle East, Central and Far East Asia. However, a recent morphological study restricts cape hares tentatively to a small range in the Western Cape Region of South Africa and groups all other L. capensis-type hares from South Africa into a new species: L. centralis. Here, we studied molecular relationships among L. capensis-type hares from South Africa. Phenotypically and morphologically the individuals matched either the newly described L. capensis or L. centralis. We examined 66 hares for allelic variation at 13 microsatellite loci and for sequence variation of the hypervariable domain 1 of the mitochondrial control region. All tree-generating analyses of the currently obtained sequences and all South African cape hare sequences downloaded from GenBank revealed monophyly when compared to sequences of various other Lepus species. A network analysis indicated close evolutionary relationships between hares of the “L. capensis-phenotype” and the “L. centralis-phenotype” (according to Palacios et al. 2008) from the southwest of the Western Cape, relative to their pronounced evolutionary divergence from all other more central, northern, and north-eastern L. capensis-type hares. F-statistics, a Bayesian admixture STRUCTURE model, as well as a principal coordinate analysis of microsatellite data indicated close genetic relationships among all South African L. capensis-type hares studied presently. A coalescence model-based migration analysis for microsatellite alleles indicated gene flow between most of the considered subspecies of cape hare, including L. capensis capensis and L. capensis centralis, theoretically sufficient to balance stochastic drift effects. Concordantly, AMOVA models revealed only little effects of partitioning microsatellite variation into the two suggested morpho-species “L. capensis” and “L. centralis”. Under an “Interbreeding Species Concept” (e.g. a strict or relaxed Biological Species Concept), the current molecular data demonstrate conspecificity of the two proposed morpho-species “L. capensis” and “L. centralis”. Based on the present molecular data the differentiation of subspecies of cape hares from southern Africa is discussed.  相似文献

Paramecium schewiakoffi sp. nov. is described from a pond in Shanghai, China. It is a freshwater species belonging to the “aurelia” subgroup of the genus. It is of similar size and shape to P. jenningsi, but has a single large micronucleus of the “chromosomal” morphological type, while P. jenningsi has two smaller micronuclei. The general morphology, morphometric characteristics and nuclear reorganization pattern, a random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprint pattern, and the small subunit rRNA gene sequence are presented for the species. Comparison of P. schewiakoffi with the other species of Paramecium indicates that it is a valid new species of the genus. Geographical locations reported for many Paramecium species do not support the theory that all ciliates have a cosmopolitan distribution. It is proposed that, in an extension of Jankowski's earlier suggestion, the genus Paramecium should be subdivided into four subgenera: Chloroparamecium, Helianter, Cypriostomum and Paramecium, on the basis of morphometric, biological and molecular differences.  相似文献

This study investigates the molecular phylogeny of seven lionfishes of the genera Dendrochirus and Pterois. MP, ML, and NJ phylogenetic analysis based on 964 bp of partial mitochondrial DNA sequences (cytochrome b and 16S rDNA) revealed two main clades: (1) “Pterois” clade (Pterois miles and Pterois volitans), and (2) “Pteropterus–Dendrochirus” clade (remainder of the sampled species). The position of Dendrochirus brachypterus either basal to the main clades or in the “Pteropterus–Dendrochirus” clade cannot be resolved. However, the molecular phylogeny did not support the current separation of the genera Pterois and Dendrochirus. The siblings P. miles and P. volitans are clearly separated and our results support the proposed allopatric or parapatric distribution in the Indian and Pacific Ocean. However, the present analysis cannot reveal if P. miles and P. volitans are separate species or two populations of a single species, because the observed separation in different clades can be either explained by speciation or lineage sorting. Molecular clock estimates for the siblings P. miles and P. volitans suggest a divergence time of 2.4–8.3 mya, which coincide with geological events that created vicariance between populations of the Indian and Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

For a better understanding of early hominid growth patterns, we need to compare skeletal maturation among humans and chimpanzees. This study provides new data on variation of the incisive suture closure in extant species to facilitate the understanding of growth patterns among South African Plio-Pleistocene hominids. The complete anterior closure of the incisive suture occurs early during human life, mostly before birth. In contrast, in chimpanzees a complete anterior closure occurs mostly after the eruption of either the first permanent molars (pygmy chimpanzees) or the third molars (common chimpanzees). The first aim of this study is to test whether the patterns of closure of both the anterior and palatal components of the incisive suture in chimpanzees accurately mirror their polytypism by investigating 720 museum specimens of known geographical origin. Then we use the data gleaned from the incisive suture closure in chimpanzees to determine whether there are different growth patterns among South African Plio-Pleistocene hominids and to interpret them. Results about the pattern of incisive suture closure are consistent with the differences among chimpanzees as revealed by molecular data. Thus, the variation in chimpanzee patterns of incisive suture closure facilitates the interpretation of morphology in South African fossil hominids. In Australopithecus (Paranthropus) robustus as compared to Australopithecus africanus, the complete anterior closure and, probably, the complete palatal closure of the incisive suture occurs during early life in the same way as they occur in humans. Moreover, the closure pattern observed on Stw 53, a supposed early Homo from Sterkfontein Member 5, is similar to that seen in A. africanus and in chimpanzees. Thus, with respect to the anterior component of the incisive suture, A. africanus and Stw 53 retain the primitive feature for which A. (P.) robustus and Homo share the derived character state. Siliceous “star cobbles”, referred to the enigmatic genus Brooksella, are abundant in the Conasauga Formation of the Coosa River Valley of Alabama and Georgia, USA. Explaining the phylogenetic affinities and taphonomic history of Brooksella has been difficult and contentious. Brooksella has, at times, been referred to: 1, the cnidarian order Scyphomedusae; 2, the cnidarian class Protomedusae (order Brooksellida); 3, as algae; 4, as a trace fossil; and 5, as a feature of inorganic origin.Macroscopic, microscopic, and computer-assisted tomographic analysis of Brooksella from the Conasauga Formation suggests that the “star cobbles” represent exceptionally preserved body fossils of simple construction. Morphology of star cobbles is most consistent with a siliceous (hexactinellid) sponge interpretation. Specimens show wide morphologic variation, including gradational patterns, suggesting that a single species name (Brooksella alternata) should be used to embrace all forms described from the Coosa Valley. B. alternata includes specimens having a variable number of radially disposed lobes divided by radial grooves, and often a central opening inferred to be an osculum on one side. Lobes in many specimens terminate in small openings. Small craterlike structures, inferred to be ostia, are present on the external surface. Radial internal cavities occupy the lobes. Specimens from the Conasauga Formation have siliceous spicules preserved surficially and internally.The three-dimensional nature of most “star cobbles” suggests rapid fossil diagenesis, perhaps mediated by the activities of microbial consortia that quickly formed biofilms around the dead hosts.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships were studied in the genus Cyanolyca, an assemblage of jays distributed from Mexico south to Bolivia. Given its fragmented distribution along the humid forests of the Neotropics, the genus Cyanolyca is a model group for exploring hypotheses on biogeography and speciation. Phylogenetic analyses were based on two mitochondrial and three nuclear loci; taxon sampling includes all species in the genus and most subspecies. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian analyses produced trees that were congruent and highly robust at both terminal and deep nodes of the phylogeny. Cyanolyca comprises two major clades: one contains the Mesoamerican “dwarf” jays, and the other consists of two main groups—C. cucullata + C. pulchra and the “core” South American species. Prior hypotheses of relationships were explored statistically using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian approaches. Dispersal-Vicariance analysis revealed the importance of the Northern Andes as a major center for biological diversification, and the effects of dispersal across the Panamanian Land Bridge in the composition of South American and Mesoamerican avifaunas. Phylogenetic patterns are highly congruent with an allopatric mode of speciation. Implications of these results are discussed in the context of the biogeography of Neotropical montane forests.  相似文献

Collaborative research was conducted at the INRA Research Centers to assess the microbial control potential of Beauveria bassiana- and Lecanicillium lecanii-based formulations against whiteflies in protected crops under Mediterranean conditions. Four series of small-scale glasshouse trials were performed in 1999 and 2000 in southern France. Two applications at 4–5 day intervals of Naturalis-L and Mycotal were conducted on young larvae of the greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum, at rates recommended by the manufacturers. Because of the expectation that environmental conditions prevailing in Mediterranean greenhouse crops may lead to greater climatic constraints for mycoinsecticide efficacy than in more temperate areas, manipulation of the greenhouse climate has been used to aim at optimizing mycoinsecticide efficacy. The climatic management strategy was mainly based on closing the ridge vents 2 h more at night-time in so-called “humid” glasshouse compartment than in a “dry” one. Thus, the daily period at high humidity (>90% RH) was two or three times longer in the “humid” compartment than in the “dry” one. In spite of this differential, mycoinsecticide treatments reduced numbers of surviving whitefly larvae by >85% in the “humid” compartment as expected as favorable, as well as in the “dry” compartment, expected as unfavorable. The results indicated clearly that both B. bassiana- and L. lecanii-based mycoinsecticides have a strong potential for microbial control of whitefly larvae infesting tomato crops at moderate ambient humidity in Mediterranean glasshouses. Our investigations provided strong arguments for explaining these unexpected results. The RH conditions prevailing in the targeted insect habitat should be greatly disconnected from that of the ambient glasshouse air. We suggest that strategies of mycoinsecticide optimization against phyllophagous insects in protected crops have to take into account factors acting on the leaf transpiration activity.  相似文献

Cage enrichment devices (ED), frequently termed cage “toys,” are often provided to captive parrots as a means of promoting a behaviorally stimulating environment, but it is not clear whether particular properties of EDs are more effective than others in eliciting engagement with them. We tested preference for color, size and hardness of cube-shaped EDs constructed from wood and of color preference for EDs constructed from flat rawhide rectangles. Orange-winged Amazon parrots (Amazona amazonica; N = 8–10, mixed-sex, 4–5 years of age) were individually housed in cages each equipped with two computer-monitored omni-directional lever-type switches attached to cage ceilings. EDs were attached to the switches; any interactions generating lateral movement and causing switch closure (operationally constituting “use” of EDs) were continuously recorded. Preference for 3.8 cm3 softwood (Douglas fir) cubes dyed in eight different colors was tested by presenting each bird with all combinations of colors, two colors at a time. Daily switch activity averages were computed for each bird and subjected to repeated-measures ANOVA: yellow cubes elicited greater use than red, green, blue, violet or natural cubes (P < 0.05; but see below) and orange cubes were preferred over green and blue cubes (P < 0.05). Color exerted no effect in a comparable trial of rawhide rectangles. Preference for size of yellow hardwood cubes was tested by presenting combinations of cubes of three sizes: 2.5, 3.8, and 5.1 cm3; the smallest blocks were preferred over the largest size (P < 0.001). Preference for hardness of wood was tested by presenting birds with 3.8 cm3 yellow cubes and blue cubes made of either Douglas fir (“soft”) or birch/maple (“hard”) wood; birds preferred softer cubes (P < 0.0002), but there was no significant preference of yellow over blue. The results show that color, hardness, size and material all influence ED use by captive Amazon parrots. This constellation of preferences may reflect properties of foods native to Orange-winged Amazon natural habitat.  相似文献

engrailed has been postulated to be the “selector gene” involved in the establishment of the anterior-posterior compartment border in several imaginal discs and in at least the first two abdominal segments of Drosophila melanogaster. Our study of the effects of different mutant engrailed genotypes on genital disc development provided the following major results: All three terminal primordia (female and male genitalia, and analia) were affected. Different heteroallelic combinations showed different expressivities, and the three terminal primordia were differently affected by the same mutant genotype. The engrailed genotypes deleted specific elements of the adult terminalia without causing associated pattern duplications. The reduced morphology of the male engrailed genital disc was analogous to the pattern deletions observed in the adult terminalia. That the engrailed phenotype is stable was demonstrated by culturing in vivo intact and fragmented engrailed genital discs. Cell death was found in a significant number of mature male en2/en3 genital discs. The results are discussed in terms of the segmental organization of the genital disc and in terms of the “selector gene” function postulated for the engrailed locus. The interpretation that each terminal primordium has an anterior and a posterior compartment is presented and it is assumed that in the genital disc engrailed transforms posterior cells into anterior cells that do not develop, thereby causing the deficiency pattern of the engrailed phenotype.  相似文献

We propose a new non-invasive integrated microsystem for electrophysiological measurements on Xenopus laevis oocytes. Xenopus oocyte is a well-known expression system for various kinds of ion channels, that are potential tools in drug screening. In the traditional “Two Electrode Voltage Clamp” (TEVC) method, delicate micromanipulation is required to impale an oocyte with two microelectrodes. In our system, a non-invasive electrical access to the cytoplasm is provided by permeabilizing the cell membrane with an ionophore (e.g. nystatin). Unlike the classical patch-clamp or “macropatch” techniques, this method does not require removal of the vitelline membrane. Cell handling is significantly simplified, resulting in more robust recordings with increased throughput. Moreover, because only part of the oocyte surface is exposed to reagents, the required volume of reagent solutions could be reduced by an order of magnitude compared to the TEVC method. The fabrication process for this disposable microchip, based on poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molding and glass/PDMS bonding, is cost-efficient and simple. We tested this new microdevice by recording currents in oocytes expressing the human Epithelial Sodium Channel (hENaC) for membrane potentials between −100 and +50 mV. We recorded benzamil-sensitive currents with a large signal-to-noise ratio and we also obtained a benzamil concentration–inhibition curve displaying an inhibition constant IC50 of about 50 nM, comparable to previously published values obtained with the TEVC technique.  相似文献

New findings of combination coccospheres bearing heterococcoliths of Calcidiscus leptoporus and holococcoliths of Crystallolithus rigidus are documented. These findings confirm previous suggestions that these two “species” are separate phases of the life-cycle of a single species.  相似文献
