Serum samples from 104 moose (Alces alces), 124 red deer (Cervus elaphus) and 114 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), collected from different counties in southern Norway from 1994 to 2000, were analysed by an indirect immunofluorescent antibody staining method for antibodies to Ehrlichia equi. The overall seroprevalences for granulocytic Ehrlichia spp. in moose, red deer, and roe deer from Ixodes ricinus infested counties were 43%, 55%, and 96%, respectively. Antibody prevalence was significantly higher in roe deer than in moose and red deer (P < 0.001). Mean antibody titers (log10 +/- SD) to E. equi in sera from moose, red deer, and roe deer were 1:1,497 (3.17 +/- 0.646), 1:234 (2.37 +/- 0.424) and 1:676 (2.83 +/- 0.404), respectively. The present work indicates that all these wild ruminant species are exposed to granulocytic Ehrlichia in Norway.  相似文献

Horizontal starch gel electrophoresis reveals three hemoglobin phenotypes in natural populations of the deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus, from northern Arizona. Phenotypic variation is controlled by a single locus. A sample of deer mice from Michigan was monomorphic for a multiple-banded phenotype. Hemoglobin polymorphism was also observed in Arizona samples of the species Peromyscus boylii. This investigation was supported by Public Health Service Research Grant R01-GM12190.  相似文献

This monograph is devoted to the study of the giant deer or megacerines (tribe Megacerini, family Cervidae, order Artiodactyla) of the Late Cenozoic of Eurasia. Special attention is paid to megacerines of Inner Asia. This region, which is connected with the origin and early stages of historical development of megacerines, is key to gaining an insight into their evolution and phylogeny, place in the food chain, and effect on the biogeocoenoses. Based on the revision of fossil materials from the Upper Miocene-Lower Pleistocene of Russia, Mongolia, and Tajikistan, new data from Tuva, and analysis of an evolution, phylogeny, ecogenesis, diversity dynamics, stages of historical development, and place of megacerines in biogeocoenoses, their role in the maintenance of homeostasis of the biosphere and changes in environments are shown and certain basic principles of macroevolution and evolution of the biosphere are discussed.  相似文献

Cilia-associated respiratory (CAR) bacillus is an unclassified bacterium that colonizes the ciliated epithelium of airways in laboratory rats, laboratory mice, and laboratory and conventionally reared rabbits, cattle, goats, and pigs. Data on the prevalence of CAR bacillus infection in wild animals are lacking. The present study demonstrated the occurrence of the organism in wild red deer (Cervus elaphus hippelaphus), chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) from the Val Fontana in northern Italy. Prevalence ranged from 26% for red deer to 56% for chamois, with a statistically significant negative correlation between CAR bacilli infection and the presence of lymphoid follicles.  相似文献

The prevalence of red deer hypodermosis and the life cycle of Hypodermia diana Brauer 1858 in three provinces of the south of Spain, Córdoba, Jaen and Ciudad Real, were studied by inspecting 254, thirty-eight and thirty-five deer from each province respectively. The prevalence of infestations was: Córdoba, 87.75%; Jaen, 92.10%, Ciudad Real, 91.42%. From this we deduced an overall prevalence of 88.67%, comprising 88.23% in male deer and 89.96% in female deer. The intensity of the parasitism in 213 of the 245 animals from Córdoba varied between one warble per animal to more than 100 in 28 of the inspected animals. The chronology of the life cycle during the hunting period (October to the end of February) was investigated.  相似文献

In August 1983, a study on parasites, diseases, and health status was conducted on sympatric populations of fallow deer (Dama dama) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from Land Between The Lakes, Lyon and Trigg counties, Kentucky. Five adult deer of each species were studied. White-tailed deer had antibodies to epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) virus and Leptospira interogans serovariety icterohemorrhagiae, and fallow deer had antibodies to bluetongue and EHD viruses. Serologic tests for bovine virus diarrhea virus, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus, parainfluenza3 virus, and Brucella spp. were negative. One white-tailed deer had an infectious cutaneous fibroma, and one fallow deer had pulmonary mucormycosis. White-tailed deer harbored 16 species of parasites, all of which are considered typical of the parasite fauna of this host in the southeastern United States. Fallow deer harbored nine species of parasites, including eight species known to occur in white-tailed deer on the area and one species (Spiculopteragia assymmetrica) that is not. All fallow deer had inflammatory lesions in the spinal cord and/or brain that were attributed to prior infection with meningeal worm (Parelaphostrongylus tenuis), indicating that P. tenuis infections are not always fatal for this species. The apparent high rate of exposure of Land Between The Lakes fallow deer to P. tenuis without a resultant high rate of clinical cerebrospinal parelaphostrongylosis is hypothesized to be due to a low prevalence and intensity of P. tenuis, partial innate resistance of fallow deer, and acquired immunity.  相似文献

We examined the impact of season and habitat on Sin Nombre virus (SNV) seroprevalence in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) in Utah's Great Basin Desert from May 2002 through summer 2003. Low mouse captures in 2002 limited analysis for that year. In two seasons during 2003, mouse density and sagebrush cover were positively linked (spring: r = 0.8, P = 0.01; summer: r = 0.8, P = 0.04). In the spring, seroprevalence was negatively correlated with density (r = -0.9, P< 0.01); male and female antibody prevalence did not differ; and scarring was unrelated to antibody status. In the summer, density and antibody prevalence were unrelated; male seroprevalence was higher (chi(2) = 3.6, P = 0.05); and seropositive mice had more scars (t = 2.5, P = 0.02). We speculate nesting behavior could maintain SNV over the winter, whereas summer territoriality could be responsible for transmission.  相似文献

Mortality in deer can occur from various causes predominantly associated directly or indirectly with man. Deliberate culling by shooting is of course the principal cause but a considerable number of deer are killed by illegal activities of poachers in various parts of the country. At present high prices for venison and low fines imposed by the Courts encourage their activities. Mechanical injuries from car accidents and fencing wire are common factors and the weather, particularly in the North of Scotland, can take a heavy toll especially of the old and the very young. Disease per se is probably of little significance in well-managed populations. An excellent host-parasite relationship seems to exist in many instances, but liver fluke and lungworm are important causes of death particularly in Roe in certain areas. Deer are, on the whole, remarkably free from clinical diseases compared with domesticated stock but with the advent of ‘deer farming’, certain infections such as Tuberculosis and Brucellosis are worthy of further study. Deaths from poisoning rarely occur although certain plants such as laurel can be toxic to Fallow deer; yew appears to be eaten with impunity. Percentage mortality in the different species is virtually impossible to ascertain at present, as the numbers of deer are not known in most areas. Moreover, dead deer are rarely found; so far the only accurate figures available have been obtained from deer parks. It would probably be true to say that the vast majority of free-living deer in Britain rarely live out their allotted span of life as judged by the age to which deer can survive in certain parks in the absence of the usual causes of mortality in the wild.  相似文献

Weanling male deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, were exposed for three weeks either to light-dark (LD) cycles with periods (T=L+D) ranging from T=23 (1L:22D) to T=25.16 (1L:24.16D) or to 24-h LD cycles with photoperiods ranging from 1 (1L:23D) to 19 (19L:5D) h. Both the circadian locomotor activity rhythms and the response of the reproductive system to these LD cycles were assessed. The results demonstrate that the photoperiodic effectiveness of light depends on the phase of the light relative to the animal's circadian system, as marked by the circadian activity rhythm. Light falling during the animal's subjective night, from activity onset to at least 11.8 h after activity onset, stimulates growth and maturation of the reproductive system, whereas light falling during the rest of the circadian cycle is nonstimulatory.  相似文献

We determined the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences (1140 bp) of one subspecies of the European red deer (Cervus elaphus in Europe), three subspecies of the wapiti (C. elaphus in Asia and North America), and six subspecies of the sika deer (C. nippon in Japan). Our phylogenetic analysis revealed the monophyly of the European red deer, that of the wapiti, and that of the sika deer. The wapiti, however, was shown to be more closely related to the sika deer than to the European red deer. This is in conflict with traditional morphological results, which suggest a close sister group relationship between the wapiti and the European red deer. The divergence time between the European red deer and the wapiti plus the sika deer was estimated to be approximately 0.80 Ma, and that between the wapiti and the sika deer was estimated to be 0.57 Ma. The sika deer was subdivided into two subspecies groups, and the wapiti was also found to consist of an Asian group and a North American group.  相似文献

From December 1983 to December 1984 a study on parasites, diseases and health status was conducted on sympatric populations of sambar deer (Cervus unicolor) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from St. Vincent Island, Franklin County, Florida. Ten sambar and six white-tailed deer were examined. White-tailed deer had antibodies to epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus and bluetongue virus. Serologic tests for antibodies to the etiologic agents of bovine virus diarrhea, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, vesicular stomatitis, parainfluenza 3, brucellosis, and leptospirosis were negative in both species of deer. White-tailed deer harbored 19 species of parasites; all were typical of the parasite fauna of this species in coastal regions of the southeastern United States. Sambar deer harbored 13 species of parasites, which apparently were derived largely from white-tailed deer. The only exception was Dermacentor variabilis which occurs frequently on wild swine on the island. The general health status of sambar deer appeared to be better than that of white-tailed deer. This was hypothesized to result from the sambar deer's utilization of food resources unavailable or unacceptable to white-tailed deer and to the absence and/or lower frequency of certain pathogens in sambar deer.  相似文献

Rumen content analysis and field observations were used to investigate the food habits and diet quality of sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis Heude) from 1991 to 1993 in eastern Hokkaido, Japan. Diets varied seasonally, with deer consuming graminoids and browse in winter, forbs and agricultural crops in spring and summer and all of these plant foods in autumn. Eighty-four plant species with sika deer bite marks were identified and their use also varied seasonally. The diversity of food resources available provided both critical protein and digestible energy, allowing for physiological maintenance and seasonal growth. With these high-quality diets, deer maintained good body condition in eastern Hokkaido, where the population density was relatively low.  相似文献

In July 1981, investigations on parasites, diseases, and herd health status were conducted on sympatric populations of sika deer (Cervus nippon) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (Maryland) and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (Virginia) on the Delmarva Peninsula. Five adult deer of each species were collected from each location and subjected to thorough necropsy examinations and laboratory tests. White-tailed deer at both locations harbored protozoan, helminth, and arthropod parasites typically associated with this species throughout the southeastern United States. In contrast, sika deer at both locations harbored only light burdens of ticks, chiggers, and sarcocysts. Serologic tests for antibodies to seven infectious disease agents revealed evidence of exposure to bovine virus diarrhea (BVD) virus, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus, and parainfluenza3 virus in white-tailed deer, but only BVD virus in sika deer. At both locations the general health status of sika deer was superior to that of white-tailed deer.  相似文献

Summary. Twelve blood proteins and enzymes were tested for polymorphism in a herd of fallow deer, Dama dama L., bred for meat production in Western Germany, to investigate the genetic constitution of the population. Although an enzyme polymorphism was detected (Catalase) for the first time in this species, electrophoretic variation is very low in comparison to other large ungulates. Possible explanations for this finding, such as recent inbreeding and a past genetic bottleneck, are given. The relationship between low genetic variation in biochemical marker systems and fitness is discussed.  相似文献

Genic variation was examined with starch and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis at 14 loci in 12 populations of Peromyscus maniculatus nubiterrae from a small part of the Appalachians in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina. Polymorphism was observed at eight loci with no significant correlations between frequency of common genotypes or alleles and altitude. Average individual heterozygosity (\-H) values were low for P. maniculatus whether using only slow evolving loci (mean = 3.0%) or both slow and fast evolving loci (mean = 4.9%). No significant correlation was present between altitude and \-H. Interlocality variation of \-H was as great in this study as previously reported for P. maniculatus over larger geographic areas. Rogers' coefficients of genetic similarity of paired combinations of populations based on slow evolving loci (range of 0.941 to 0.997) or based on slow and fast evolving loci (range of 0.858 to 0.974) showed all populations to be highly similar. Ranges of similarity values observed in the present study were as great as those previously reported for P. maniculatus over a larger geographic area.  相似文献

Summary Dispersal of deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, was measured as immigration to and emigration from two control areas, and as immigration to a removal area. The number of mice dispersing was linearly related to the densities on the control areas, while the proportion of the population dispersing (rate of dispersal) was correlated primarily with the rate of increase of control populations. High rates of dispersal were also associated with a breakdown of the established social structure in the spring and fall. Dispersing animals were compared to residents with respect to sex ratio, weight, age, and breeding condition. The types of animals dispersing varied seasonally: light-weight, non-breeding males dispersed in the spring and summer; juveniles and breeding males dispersed at the end of the breeding season; and light-weight mice of both sexes dispersed over the winter. It is proposed that the animals that dominated the dispersal samples each season were moving in response to social pressure from residents, or local limitations of some resource, and thus, that dispersal was adaptive for the individuals concerned. Some tests of the hypotheses concerning resource limitation are suggested.  相似文献
