Synopsis A population of the S. Indian cyprinid fishBarbus melanampyx was sampled monthly through 24 months. Seasonal cycles of the gonado-somatic index (GSI), ovarian stages, male breeding tubercles, spawning behaviour and population structure were assessed. These fish breed strictly seasonally during the main dry period: December/January through April. Comparison with other Barbus species of the same general region led to the conclusion that the patterns of reproductive investment ofB. melanampyx are similar to those of perennial species, and different from those of wet-season spawners. The reasons for this rather unexpected result were found in the more constant conditions prevailing during a dry season as compared to the monsoon. It was argued thatB. melanampyx and the species spawning perennially are in effect small-brood spawners, rather than partial spawners. 相似文献

Reproductive characteristics of siahmahi, Capoeta damascina (Valenciennes, 1842), a native cyprinid in the Zayandeh‐Roud River, were investigated by monthly sampling from March 2007 to April 2008. Among 689 specimens captured, the overall sex ratio was 1 : 1.57 (males : females). Males matured at age 2+. Females matured between ages 4 and 6, with 100% maturity at age 7+. Based on the gonadosomatic index (GSI), the reproductive period peaked between May and June. Histological and macroscopic characteristics of the gonad indicated the species to be group‐synchronous. Absolute fecundity varied greatly with female size, ranging 2520 to 72 650 (mean 24 800 ± 17 800) eggs for females 25.5–54.2 cm TL and weighing 320–2340 g. Fecundity increased with fish age, averages being 9446 ± 8028 for 4+ old females and 54 503 ± 13 803 eggs in mature 8+ year old females. 相似文献

The pressures in the buccal cavities of Golden orfe (Idus idus) have been recorded as the fish took food from a tube connected to a pressure transducer. Pressures 50–105 cm water below the pressure of the surrounding water were recorded as the buccal cavity expanded to suck the food in. Calculations based on the dimensions of the muscles lead to the conclusion that the levatores hyoidei, sternohyoideus, rectus abdominis, epaxial trunk muscles and obliquus internus probably all had to exert almost their maximum isometric tensions, to produce the largest reductions of pressure. These muscles seem nicely balanced in strength for their functions in feeding. 相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. When a predator attacks a mixed-species group, individual prey arc faced with a conflict between retaining the advantages of large group size and the disadvantages of remaining among aliens. Experiments were designed to show how this conflict is resolved in fish shoals.
2. Simulated attacks with a model predator were made upon mixed and single species shoals of three cyprinid species under semi-natural conditions in a fluvarium.
3. Measurements of elective group size, neighbour identity and distance, and encounters within and between species revealed behaviour which sorted fish into species at the onset of predator attack.
4. A control experiment demonstrated the same effect for fish of matched size.

Embryonic, larval, and juvenile development of a small Indian cyprinid, Horadandia atukorali, is described from laboratory-reared specimens. The eggs, measuring 0.7–0.8mm in diameter, were demersal, almost spherical in shape, transparent and unpigmented, with a pale yellow yolk without oil globules. Hatching occurred 47–54h after fertilization at 26.3–27.5°C. The newly hatched larvae, measuring 2.3–2.6mm in body length (BL) with 16+13=29 myomeres, had no melanophores, except on the eye, a single melanophore occurring on the lower margin, and xanthophores surrounding the pupil. The yolk was completely absorbed at 3.0mm BL. Notochord flexion was initiated at 4.0mm BL and finished at 4.4mm BL. Aggregate numbers of all fin rays were completed at 8.0mm BL. Squamation was initiated at 6.4mm BL and completed at 9.5mm BL. Although the eggs of Horadandia atukorali resembled those of other small danionin species, including Aphyocypris chinensis, Chela dadiburjori, Danio rerio, Devario malabaricus, and Hemigrammocypris rasborella, they differed from those of Danio rerio and Devario malabaricus in having a narrower perivitelline space. The larvae and juveniles of Horadandia atukorali were also similar to those of the latter five species in general morphology, especially in the presence of a melanophore on the lower margin of the eye at hatching, as in C. dadiburjori. However, the early life stage morphology of Horadandia atukorali differed from the other danionin species in having a conical yolk sac at hatching, no cement organ on the forehead in the yolk-sac larval stage, a divided gas bladder in the flexion larval stage, two dark lateral streaks on the head and chevron-like melanophores on the ventral body surface from the preflexion to postflexion larval stages, and xanthophores on the eyes at hatching. 相似文献

The larvae and juveniles of T. albonubes were similar to those of the aforementioned seven species plus Danio albolineatus, Danio kerri, and Devario sp. (cf. D. aequipinnatus) in general morphology. However, the early life stage morphology of T. albonubes differed from them in having a dark vertical streak posterior to the otic capsule and melanophores above the eyes in the
yolk sac larval stage, and a dark lateral streak with an unpigmented area just above the former on the body, a dark blotch

Two dark transverse bands on the ventral body surface and one melanophore on the lower margin of the eye in newly hatched larvae were diagnostic. Additionally, a cement organ for adhering to objects was present on the forehead of yolk sac larvae <3.1mm BL. The yolk was completely absorbed at 3.5mm BL. Notochord flexion was initiated at 5.0mm BL and finished at 6.0mm BL. Aggregate numbers of all fin rays were completed at 9.2mm BL. Squamation was initiated on the caudal peduncle at 8.0mm BL and completed at 10mm BL. The eggs of C. dadiburjori resembled those of the closely related species Devario malabaricus and Danio rerio. The larvae and juveniles of C. dadiburjori were also similar to those of the latter species in general morphology, especially the presence of body melanophores in newly hatched individuals and a distinctive lateral streak on the head during the period from yolk sac to postflexion larvae. However, early yolk sac larvae of C. dadiburjori were more similar to those of Devario malabaricus than Danio rerio in having a cement organ on the forehead. Larvae and juveniles of C. dadiburjori differed from those of the latter two species in pigmentation on the ventral body surface at hatching and around the mouth during the period from preflexion to early postflexion larvae and in having a dark lateral streak or band on the body in postflexion larvae and juveniles. 相似文献

Changes in the behaviour of cyprinids belonging to different ecology groups were observed below a weir that was restricting their upstream migrations during the spawning period May–July. Positions of chub Leuciscus cephalus (L.), Prussian carp Carrasius auratus gibelio (Bloch 1783), bream Abramis brama (L.) and white bream Blicca bjoerkna (L.) were recorded every 12 min over a 24‐h period using an automatic data logger (ALS) in the upper Elbe River, Czech Republic. For all observed species, two activity peaks occurred; however, the interspecies timing of these peaks differed. Peak times for chub, bream and white bream occurred at night and during daylight, whereas Prussian carp was active mostly at night. Specimens belonging to the rheophilous group suggested more efficient behavioural tactics in passing the weir, staying below the obstacle one month longer than did eurytopic species. 相似文献

Summary The lymphoid organs of rosy barb (Barbus conchonius) and carp (Cyprinus carpio) were investigated for their phagocytic uptake of carbon, after its intraperitoneal injection. Carbon handling was similar in both species. It was first detected in the lymphoid organs at 30 min after injection. During the first day, carbon was phagocytized by macrophages situated in the spleen within the ellipsoids and in the red pulp. In head and trunk kidney, carbon was found in macrophages scattered throughout the haemopoietic parenchyma, and in cells lining the blood sinuses. In the spleen, macrophages replete with carbon left the ellipsoidal structures and formed aggregates with pigment-containing macrophages from day 6 onwards. In all lymphoid organs, almost all carbon was ultimately concentrated in the melano-macrophage centres. 相似文献

To cope with an unpredictable variety of potential pathogenic insults, the immune system must generate an enormous diversity of recognition structures, and it does so by making stepwise modifications at key genetic loci in each lymphoid cell. These modifications proceed through the action of lymphoid-specific proteins acting together with the general DNA-repair machinery of the cell. Strikingly, these general mechanisms are usually diverted from their normal functions, being used in rather atypical ways in order to privilege diversity over accuracy. Larvae and juveniles of C. barbatus were similar to those of O. uncirostris subspp., Z. platypus, and Z. pachycephalus, but differed from the latter in the process of disappearance of the adipose finfold (postflexion larval stage), barbels on upper jaw (juvenile stage), and pigmentation on the lateral body surface (postflexion larval and juvenile stages). Although C. barbatus also differed from the Z. temminckii species' group [Z. temminckii and Zacco sp. (sensu Hosoya, 2002)] in having barbels, larvae and juveniles of the former showed more similarity to the latter species group than to O. uncirostris subspp., Z. platypus, and Z. pachycephalus, from the aspect of head and body pigmentation. 相似文献

Phylogenetically diploid and tetraploid cyprinid fish species have cells of very similar volumes and protein contents. This finding has prompted us to postulate a regulatory system established during the evolution of the tetraploids leading to a diploid state of genic expression. It was proposed that this might be accounted for by a selective loss of ribosomal genes. 1. A highly repeated, satellite DNA family from the North American cyprinid fish, Notropis lutrensis, was identified as a fragment band following restriction endonuclease enzyme digestion and agarose gel electrophoresis of genomic DNA; evidence of a tandem arrangement of the satellite in the genome was demonstrated by the formation of "ladders" in partial restriction endonuclease digests. 2. The satellite family was estimated densitometrically to comprise 7-8% of the N. lutrensis genome; mapping experiments using isolated and purified monomer repeat units of the satellite uncovered nine sites for seven different restriction enzymes. 3. A monomeric repeat unit of the satellite was cloned and sequenced, and found to be 174 base pairs in length and to have a base composition of 47% G + C (guanine + cytosine); computer analysis of the sequence revealed 13 new restriction sites for 12 additional enzymes. 4. Computer analysis also revealed that a large degree of internal redundancy in the monomer unit exists in the form of both direct and inverted repeating units, and that the entire sequence, starting with one base in either orientation, constitutes an open reading frame. In all but the last characteristic, the N. lutrensis satellite DNA is very similar to satellite DNAs in other eukaryotes. 相似文献

The study presented has been carried out to evaluate the treatment performance, fish production and water consumption of a closed-loop chemical-free water treatment system for small-scale cyprinid fish farms. The closed-loop system consisted of a 36 m3 experimental pond (Pond A) with initial carp load of 1 kg/m3 (34 Cyprinus c. carpio); of a treatment train (TT) with a roughing filter (RF), glass fibre filters (GFF), and UV-C units (UV); and of an ultrasound unit (US) installed in the corner of the pond. The average circulation of the water in the closed-loop system was 2.3 times per day. Pond A was compared with a control pond (Pond B) of the same dimensions and fish load but with no TT or US. The TT was efficient in the removal of total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total coliforms (TC), and faecal coliforms (FC), reaching 35%, 42%, 33%, 37%, 91% and 91% removal, respectively. The majority of pollutant removal took place in the RF, while the GFF contributed mostly to the removal of TC and FC. UV did not contribute to the removal of bacteria, mostly due to low TC and FC inputs. The removal of nutrients in the TT (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, total phosphorous and orto-phosphate) was not efficient. Despite this, Pond A had markedly lower nutrient concentrations compared to Pond B, and all the mean values of the measured parameters except nitrites and total phosphorous in Pond A were below legislation limit. Specific growth rate and fish body weight increase in Pond A were higher than in Pond B (0.3%/day, 0.2%/day, 152% and 115%, respectively) indicating better rearing conditions in Pond A. However, fish showed with 2.8 in Pond A and 3.3 in Pond B poor feed conversion rate over warm months. Higher water consumption in Pond A was due to various interventions during the pilot operation that can be reduced in normal operation. The results showed that the closed-loop system presented could be useful for semi-natural fish farming of 1-2 kg fish/m3. However, the system should be improved with regular sedimented algae removal to avoid nutrient accumulation. 相似文献

Synopsis Barbus radiatus is a widely distributed, polytypic species with three recognized subspecies: radiatus Peters (1853), aurantiacus Boulenger (1910), and profundus Greenwood (1970). A phenetic analysis of relative similarity was conducted for specimens of B. radiatus from throughout its known range. The study focuses on several large population samples taken recently along the presumed central Zambian interface between the subspecies aurantiacus and radiatus. New data on meristic and morphometric variation in B. radiatus and recent rediscovery of typical radiatus in Lake Victoria demonstrate that profundus is a species distinct from radiatus. With respect to the remaining two subspecies, results indicate a populational mosaic of highly variable morphs rather than two discrete, allopatric morphs. Thus, aurantiacus is placed in synonymy of radiatus. It is hypothesized that the populational mosaic of morphology in radiatus reflects adaptive ecotypic responses to water temperature and current velocity. The characters which accounted for most of the geographic variation of radiatus were body depth, caudal peduncle length, longitudinal meristic counts, dorsal fin height, and orbit diameter. 相似文献

Summary Structure-function studies were undertaken on cones in the retina of the cyprinid fish, the roach,Rutilus rutilus, in order to provide a basis for analysis of colour information by post-receptoral neurones. Measurements were made with two main aims: (i) To determine by microspectrophotometry the absorbance spectra of the photopigments present within the retina, and correlate these with the morphological types of photoreceptor; (ii) To characterize the morphologies of the photoreceptors at both light and electron microscopical levels and determine their relative abundance in the retina. In addition to red-, green-, and blue-sensitive cones, an ultra-violet-sensitive photoreceptor has been found in a sub-population of miniature short single cones. Possible relevance of this finding to vertebrate vision is discussed. 相似文献
