Synopsis Gizzard shad,Dorosoma cepedianum, in Acton Lake, Ohio, ingested foods of varying nutritional quality during the 1981–1983 growing seasons. Adult (ages 2–4) fish fed on a mixed diet (ORG>30%; C:N<7:1) of zooplankton and organic detritus in early summer, and on detrital materials (ORG<16%; C:N>11:1) during the remainder of the growing season. Age 0 (<35 mm standard length) fish ingested only detrital materials. The nutritional quality (ORG = 10 – 20%; C:N<11:1) of these foods displayed little seasonal variation, but was higher than that of organic detritus taken by adult fish in late summer and autumn. Growth and condition of gizzard shad were poor when the diet consisted of detrital materials; however, age 4 fish (1983) grew rapidly and condition improved when zooplankton were consumed. These results suggest that ingestion of poor-quality detritus can reduce the growth and condition of gizzard shad in Acton Lake, whereas the seasonal inclusion of high-quality zooplankton in the diet can result in rapid growth and improved condition.  相似文献

Synopsis We observed spawning American brook lamprey, Lampetra appendix, in coldwater streams in Minnesota to assess various aspects of their spawning behavior and spawning habitat requirements. Spawning occurred during April and May, at water temperatures ranging from 8.7 to 15.5°C. Average adult lamprey length and mass differed significantly among streams, but there were no significant differences in length or mass between males and females. Overall sex ratio was 1:1, although one stream had significantly more males than females and one stream held significantly more females. Lampreys spawned in groups of 2–14 individuals, averaging 4.2 adults per nest across all streams. Nests were constructed in gravel and cobble substrate just upstream of riffles, spaced at an average density of three nests m−2. The typical nest was 16 cm in diameter in water 31 cm deep with a bottom current velocity of 14 cm s−1, and was excavated to a depth of 4 cm below the stream bottom; however, some nest characteristics varied significantly in a few streams. Nests were larger in streams with larger spawning groups, deeper water, and slower current velocities. American brook lamprey exhibited spawning behaviors and spawning habitat requirements similar to those of other species of lamprey in North America.  相似文献

Synopsis The capacity of the juvenile white sucker, Catostomus commersoni, to feed selectively on detritus was examined by analyzing gut contents of fish feeding in a northern Michigan pond and in laboratory aquaria. Suckers selected fine particle detritus. The median length of detritus particles consumed by pond suckers ranged from 26–38 m for all seasons sampled. Although suckers in the pond ingested invertebrates > 215 m they never ingested detritus particles > 215 m. Suckers fed pond detritus in laboratory aquaria selectively ingested the fine particle fraction (Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, p < 0.0001). Suckers excluded particles > 220 m and ingested a median particle size of 54 m. Amorphous detritus particles comprised 100% of the detritus particles in 93% of the foreguts analyzed. Suckers fed fine particle (< 45 ) pond detritus in laboratory aquaria rejected the inorganic fraction and selectively ingested organicmaterial with the highest protein and energy content. Ash free dry mass (AFDM) as a percent of dry-mass was 2.6 times greater in the foregut contents than in the detritus (p < 0.001). The amino acid concentration and energy density of the ingested organic matter were 1.9 times higher (p < 0.044) and 1.3 times higher (p < 0.025) than the respective amino acid and energy content of the organic fraction of the detritus. These results indicate that suckers have the capacity to consume selectively fine particle detritus with the highest nutritional value.  相似文献

We studied the effect of larval density on food utilization by sediment-dwelling northern brook lamprey (Ichthyomyzon fossor) larvae in the Otter River, Baraga County, MI, USA using field surveys and in situ cage experiments. Field surveys found that food utilization was inversely proportional to density across the range of 1 to 10 larvae/m2. Compared to 1 larvae/m2, values at 10 larvae/m2 were lower by an average of 36% for gut fullness, by 32% for selective ingestion of organic matter, and by 71% and 58% for assimilation of diet organic matter and diet amino acids, respectively. In situ cage experiments and additional field studies in other nearby rivers revealed the same relationships. We hypothesize that physical disturbance of the sediment by adjacent larvae interferes with food utilization with the frequency of disturbance proportional to density. Condition factors were not correlated with density and indicate that individual larvae minimize the effect of crowding by moving away from higher density patches. We conclude that these findings are generalizable to other lamprey species in similar environments in which lower rates of growth, maturation, and survivorship of lamprey larvae at higher densities have been reported by other researchers.  相似文献

Fatty acid compositions in the tissues of the clam Geloina coaxans collected from Oura mangal, Okinawa, Japan, during the cold and warm seasons (January and July 2001, respectively) were compared with those in suspended materials (SM) in order to assess the clams' diet. In both seasons, the suspended mangrove detritus at the sediment-water interface was high as indicated by the mean percentage of even-numbered long-chain fatty acids in SM (12.8-18.4%). The contribution of this marker in the clam tissues, especially during the cold season (3.9%), indicates the consumption of mangrove detritus in considerable amounts by the clams. The occurrence of the fatty acids 16:1ω7, 18:1ω9, 18:2ω6 and 18:3ω3 in SM was most likely due to the mangrove detritus sources, whereas in the SM they together constituted 12.9% and 23.9% of total fatty acid contents during the cold and warm seasons, respectively. As a result, their contribution in the clam tissues was high in the cold (15.4%) and warm seasons (19.0%). These results indicate that mangrove detritus play a significant role in the clams' diet. The mean percentages of bacterial markers (odd-numbered branched fatty acids and vaccenic acid, 18:1ω7) in the SM and tissues during both seasons ranged from 8.1% to 9.5%. This indicates that the clam diet is also dependent on the attached bacteria on the partially decomposed leaf detritus suspended at the sediment-water interface. The relative contribution by microalgae markers (18:4ω3, 20:5ω3 and 22:6ω3) in clam tissues ranged from 4.3% to 7.6%, suggesting considerable microalgae sources in the diets.  相似文献

1. Temperature, organic carbon and oxygen consumption were measured over a year at 13 sites in four lowlands streams within the same region in North Zealand, Denmark with the objectives of determining: (i) spatial and seasonal differences between open streams, forest streams and streams with or without lakes, (ii) factors influencing the temperature dependence of oxygen consumption rate, (iii) consequences of higher temperature and organic content in lake outlets on oxygen consumption rate, and (iv) possible consequences of forecasted global warming on degradation of organic matter. 2. High concentrations of easily degradable dissolved (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) were found in open streams downstream of plankton‐rich lakes, while high concentrations of recalcitrant DOC were found in a forest brook draining a forest swamp. Concentrations of predominantly recalcitrant POC and DOC were low in a groundwater‐fed forest spring. Overall, DOC concentration was two to 18 times higher than POC concentrations. 3. Oxygen consumption rate at 20 °C was higher during summer than winter, higher in open than shaded streams and higher in lake outlets than inlets. Rate was closely related to concentrations of chlorophyll and POC but not to DOC. The ratio of oxygen consumption rate to total organic concentrations (DOC + POC), serving as a measure of organic degradability, was highest downstream of lakes, intermediate in open streams and lowest in forest streams. 4. Temperature coefficients describing the exponential increase of oxygen consumption rate between 4 and 20 °C averaged 0.121 °C?1 (Q10 of 3.35) in 70 measurements and showed no significant variations between seasons and stream sites or correlations with ambient temperature and organic content. 5. Oxygen consumption rate was enhanced downstream of lakes during summer because of higher temperature and, more significantly, greater concentrations of degradable organic carbon. Oxygen consumption rates were up to seven times higher in the stream with three impoundments than in a neighbouring unshaded stream and 21 times higher than in the groundwater‐fed forest spring. 6. A regional climate model has calculated a dramatic 4–5 °C rise in air temperature over Denmark by 2070–2100. If this is realised, unshaded streams are estimated to become 2–3 °C warmer in summer and winter and 5–7 °C warmer in spring and, thereby, increase oxygen consumption rates at ambient temperature by 30–40% and 80–130%, respectively. Faster consumption of organic matter and dissolved oxygen downstream of point sources should increase the likelihood of oxygen stress of the stream biota and lead to the export of less organic matter but more mineralised nutrients to the coastal waters.  相似文献

Synopsis Origins of the freshwater attractant(s) of migrating elvers of the American eel were investigated by assaying elvers' responses to rinses of plants, animals, and inanimate objects collected from a Rhode Island (U.S.A.) brook with a sizable elver run. Odor rinses were tested in a Y-maze at naturally occurring concentrations against both blank and brook water. Many items were attractive, several were repulsive, and some caused a reduction in elvers' rheotactic behavior, suggesting that elvers respond to a bouquet of odors. The odor of abundant decaying leaf detritus was highly attractive as were odors of the surfaces of aquatic plants, submerged stones, and migrating alewives. Conspecific odor was only weakly attractive. Because unattractive leaves became attractive when cultured with stream water, microorganisms responsible for detrital decomposition and present in/on most stream objects are thought to be the major source of the attractant(s). Decaying detritus and its associated microorganisms are abundant in most freshwater streams, where they often constitute the ecosystem's primary energy source; their odor could serve as an index of environmental suitability for migrating eels.  相似文献

New Zealand stream crayfish: functional omnivores but trophic predators?   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
1. The feeding ecology of the crayfish Paranephrops planifrons in streams draining catchments in native forest and pastoral land was investigated using analyses of both stomach contents and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen. We aimed to (1) identify the energy sources of crayfish, (2) determine whether these were affected by ontogeny or land use change, and (3) assess the functional and trophic roles of crayfish in New Zealand hill-country streams.
2. In native forest streams, crayfish stomach contents were dominated volumetrically by leaf detritus (>60%), but in pasture streams aquatic invertebrates constituted more than 40% of stomach volumes and leaf detritus <30%. Stable isotope analyses revealed that crayfish from both native forest and pasture streams incorporated energy from aquatic invertebrates into their body tissue but did not appear to utilize detritus for growth. Therefore, deforestation had little impact on crayfish energy sources.
3. In native forest streams, adult crayfish (≥20 mm orbit-carapace length (OCL)) consumed greater amounts of leaf detritus than juvenile crayfish, but a corresponding change in stable isotope signatures was not detected. Ontogenetic shifts in diet were not consistent between land use suggesting that change in local habitat and food resources, as a result of land use change, affect crayfish food choice more than factors related solely to age or size.
4. Crayfish appear to occupy the trophic position of a predator, but by functioning as omnivores, they have dual roles as both predators and processors of organic matter. The use of gut content analysis in conjunction with stable isotope analyses revealed that the functional and trophic roles of P. planifrons differed, with implications for the interpretation of diet studies and understanding of the role of omnivores in food webs.  相似文献

Food resource partitioning between similar‐sized, sympatric Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis was examined as a possible mechanism enabling their coexistence in a stream (Allaire) of the Sainte‐Marguerite River ecosystem, Quebec, Canada. Fish stomach contents and invertebrate drift were collected concurrently during three diel cycles in August to September 1996. The food and feeding habits of an allopatric brook trout population in a nearby stream (Epinette) were studied for comparison. The diel feeding rhythms of the two coexisting fish species were similar. The composition of their diet, however, showed significant differences. Atlantic salmon predominantly (60–90%) fed on aquatic insects, mainly Ephemeroptera (35–60% of the diet). The brook trout mostly (50–80%) fed upon the allochthonous terrestrial insects (mainly adults of Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Diptera) which comprised 5–40% of the stream drift. The allopatric brook trout fed opportunistically on the more abundant aquatic insects and terrestrial insects rarely formed 25% of its diet. The allopatric trout fed nearly twice as much as the sympatric brook trout during a day. The results suggest that the differences in feeding by brook trout in the two streams (with and without Atlantic salmon) are the result of inter‐specific interaction with Atlantic salmon and are not related to the differences in food availability between the two streams. Food resource partitioning between Atlantic salmon and brook trout may be viewed as an adaptive response resulting in a greater exploitation of available resources and coexistence.  相似文献

This study describes phenetic characteristics and examines the life history of anadromous Arctic lamprey Lethenteron camtschaticum and freshwater‐resident Alaskan brook lamprey Lethenteron alaskense in two tributaries of the middle Yukon River, Alaska. Larval lampreys could not be identified to species using pigmentation density patterns or trunk myomere counts, but adults could be identified to species based on colouration, body size and oral‐disc dentition. Although larvae were patchily distributed in both rivers, there was a greater proportion of sample locations where Lethenteron spp. were absent in upper reaches than in middle and lower reaches. Relative abundance, density and median and maximum total length (LT) of larvae were highly variable among sampling locations. Current velocity, substratum type and coarse woody debris were most strongly correlated with larval Lethenteron spp. density; velocity and substratum size was negatively correlated, whereas woody debris was positively correlated. Water depth, dissolved oxygen levels and specific conductance did not influence habitat selection. Length–frequency distributions, diet composition (organic detritus ≥ 98%), assimilation efficiency (>70%) and gut fullness (<0·2 mg diet ash‐free dry mass) were similar for larvae, regardless of river or sampling location. These results increase understanding of Lethenteron spp. biology and ecology in interior Alaska drainages and add to the existing literature on Lethenteron spp. life history.  相似文献

Diet and growth of leaf-shredding caddisfly larvae, Pycnopsyche spp.,were examined in streams draining a reference catchment and a 16-year-oldclear-cut (disturbed) catchment at Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory insouthwestern North Carolina, USA. The objective was to explain why shredderproduction is higher in the disturbed streams despite the larvae having lessfood (i.e., leaves) available. We predicted larvae would grow faster onfast-decaying leaf material representative of the disturbed streams. Larvaeconsumed mostly leaf detritus in three streams draining each catchment overthree seasons (fall, winter, and spring), which showed larvae did notconsume higher quality foods (e.g., algae and animal material) in disturbedstreams. When fed 2-month-old conditioned black birch (Betula lenta L.) (afast-decaying leaf species) and white oak (Quercus alba L.) (a slow-decayingleaf species) leaves in the laboratory, larvae grew significantly faster onthe birch leaves. However, when larvae were fed the same leaf types after3-months conditioning, larvae grew significantly faster on oak leaves. Afield growth experiment conducted for 42 d using mixed-species leaf dietsrepresentative of each catchment and initially conditioned for 2 monthsfound that Pycnopsyche grew significantly better on the diet representativeof the reference catchment. The reference diet contained more oak leaveswhich apparently became a more acceptable food as the experiment proceeded.High shredder production in the disturbed streams could not be explained byhigh Pycnopsyche growth rates on fast-decaying leaves. Instead, larvae grewbetter on leaves that were apparently conditioned optimally regardless ofconditioning rate.  相似文献

Breeding and diet of Parea Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae chathamensis were studied in relation to food abundance and quality on Chatham Island from 1991 to 1994. Although pairs were found breeding in all months, they nested predominantly during winter and spring (June-November). The timing of the nesting season, the proportion of pairs that bred and the number of chicks reared per pair varied between nesting seasons. During the 1992–1993 and 1994–1995 nesting seasons, all pairs nested, and many pairs reared two chicks, often involving clutch overlap (58% of 12 cases in 1992–1993, 37% of eight cases in 1994–1995). In 1993–1994, when fruit was scarce, nesting began 2 months later, only 44% of pairs nested and no pairs attempted to rear a second chick. Prior to and during the productive nesting seasons (1992–1993, 1994–1995), the diet of Parea consisted mainly of fruit, particularly that of Matipo Myrsine chathamica in autumn (March-May) and Hoho Pseudopanax chathamicus in winter and spring. Nutrient analyses of the main Parea foods showed that the pulp of these fruit were rich in lipids and available carbohydrates compared with those in foliage foods. Heavy fruiting of Matipo and Hoho promoted early nesting and prolonged nesting for 6 months, including nesting during winter.  相似文献

The natural food ofOreochromis niloticus in Lake Awasa was studied from the stomach contents of 10 fish measuring 18–32 cm (standard length) monthly from August 1984 to April 1986.Chroococcus, Oscillatoria andBotryococcus were found to be important food items in the diet. Animal foods were observed on rare occasions and these were mainly Rotifera. Blue-green algae as a group contribute about 28.1% of the ash free dry weight (AFDW) whereas diatoms and green algae (excludingBotryococcus) make 2.31% and 2.39% of AFDW, respectively.Botryococcus, detritus and other algae comprised 67.2% of AFDW and it was suspected that more than half of this was contributed byBotryococcus. Blue-green algae, which were especially abundant in the diet during the dry season, November–February, are nutritionally most important. Seasonal variation in algal species composition could influence the quality of food ingested by the fish.  相似文献

Synopsis The influence of late spring and summer water temperatures on brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, growth and age structure was evaluated from 1984 to 1991 in the Ford River, Michigan. Temperature was monitored and brook charr sampled for vital statistics from late May through September using fyke nets and weirs at four locations within a 25.8 km section of stream. Scale analysis was used to determine captured brook charr age, past length at age and relative annual growth rates. Late spring and summer water temperature patterns varied between years with the greatest variability occurring in May and June. Age and size structure also varied between years and was significantly related to temperature. Years with cooler late spring and summer temperature patterns were dominated by older (age 2 and 3), larger brook charr, while years with warmer spring and summer temperature patterns were dominated by younger (age 1), smaller brook charr. Spring and summer temperature did not appear to have a significant effect on the growth of age 0 or age 1 brook charr. However, temperature was negatively related to brook charr growth from age 2 on. As spring and summer water temperatures are critical to brook charr growth and survival, it is important that a streams thermal regime be considered when establishing management goals for this species.  相似文献

  • 1 The question of whether the diets of twelve abundant macroinvertebrate taxa from the middle and lower reaches of the Buffalo River (eastern Cape, South Africa) were too variable to allow them to be assigned to functional feeding groups (FFGs) was addressed.
  • 2 Spatial, temporal and developmental variations in diet were assessed. Foregut content analysis was used as an index to compare diets.
  • 3 Foregut contents were compared from early (small) and late (large) instar larvae collected from riffles at thirteen sites in summer, and from riffles, stony backwaters and sediments at four of these sites in spring, summer, autumn and winter, in 1987.
  • 4 For all individuals of all taxa, fine amorphous detritus (0.5–250 μm), was the most common dietary item. Differences in diet followed a similar pattern for all taxa. The most frequent differences in dietary content were between large and small larvae. The foreguts of large larvae contained more material, and a wider variety of rare items than small larvae. Neither species nor FFGs could be distinguished on the basis of foregut contents.
  • 5 Two dietary types were recognized. The eight mayfly larvae were fine detritivores, having ingested fine detritus almost exclusively. In contrast, the two hydropsychid caddisfly larvae had ingested a mixed diet; their gut contents included chirinous invertebrate remains and other items as well as fine detritus.
  • 6 Intra-specific dietary variability was not so great as to prevent these taxa from being assigned to FFGs. On the contrary, inter-specific dietary content was so similar that gut content analysis could not provide a positive basis upon which to identify FFGs.

This study investigates sex steroids, gonadal histology and some biological indices of fall and spring spawning migrants of Caspian lamprey Caspiomyzon wagneri (Kessler, 1870). Blood and gonad samples were collected from 15 migrants during fall and spring. Serum sex steroid levels including testosterone (T), 17β-estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) were determined with ELISA and gonadal development was studied using conventional histological methods. Our results showed serum E2 level in females were similar in the two seasons but in males, fall migrants had higher serum E2 concentrations. No differences were found in T levels in fall and spring migrants. Serum P concentration in fall migrant males were significantly higher than spring migrant males while spring migrant females had higher serum P levels compare to fall migrant females. Gonads in both fall and spring migrants were in the final stage of maturity. Fall and spring migrant males had similar HSI and GSI; fall migratory female had significantly higher HSI and GSI. Sex ratios were close to 1:1 in both seasons. There was a significant relationship between fecundity and length in both seasons. Comparison of fecundity and egg diameter between fall and spring seasons showed no significant difference. These results indicate that both fall and spring migrants Caspian lamprey were ready for spawning. Further studies are needed to clarify when spawning occurs in Caspian lamprey.  相似文献

Abundance of lamprey larvae and physical habitat   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Synopsis Southern brook lamprey larvae,Ichthyomyzon gagei, were collected from four creeks in Alabama and Mississippi. Larvae abundance (number m–2) and length (mm) were measured over a range of sites to quantify some of the physical parameters involved in larval habitat selection. Particle size distribution, hydraulic conductivity, porosity and organic content were the factors analyzed. Abundance of larvae was greatest when particles smaller than 0.15 mm and 1.–2.0 mm in diameter represented at least 40% and 8% dry weight of the substrate, respectively. Abundance of larvae was lowest when the small particles represented less than 10% dry weight of the substrate. A strong inverse relationship was observed between density and length of larvae. All other parameters did not significantly affect lamprey habitat selection. Results of this study may be applicable in directing attempts at aquatic habitat restoration for lamprey in endangered streams.  相似文献

The nutritive quality of ingested material of adult Oreochromis mossambicus wild populations from 12 perennial, man-made lakes were evaluated for four climatic seasons. The seasonal variation in condition of each population, and the overall condition of each population, considered as the theoretical weight of a 20cm individual, was computed from the length-weight regressions, which were curvilinear. The mean overall condition of the O. mossambicus reservoir population was 152.6 g ( s.d. ± 9.5) and ranged between 139.8 and 167.8 g. Distinct patterns in the seasonal changes in condition of an individual population were not apparent. The mean percentage of protein and total organic matter (TOM) and calorific content (kJg−1) of the ingested material were 20.7% ( s.d. ± 3.7; range 9.6–35.2%), 46.0% ( s.d. ± 9.8; range 20.9–73.7%) and 11.6 ( s.d. ± 3.4; range 4.6–20.9) respectively. The amount of each of the above components for any one population varied seasonally in relation to the changes in feeding habit. The protein content of the ingested material of those populations devouring predominantly detritus also showed seasonal variability. The amount of protein (mg) in the digestible total organic matter (DTOM) and the calorific content (Cal) in the ingested material were related to the TOM content as follows: The overall body condition (BC) of O. mossambicus populations was linearly rebated to the digestible protein: energy ratio (PER) thus: The study indicates that a mixed diet was superior in nutritional quality to a single-component diet. especially with respect to detrital material.  相似文献

A year-round study was conducted to examine feeding habits and food resources of the filter-feeding Trichoptera Arctopsyche grandis and Brachycentrus occidentalis along a regulated mountain stream gradient. There was a well defined longitudinal species replacement with A. grandis reaching maximum densities 2.3 kilometers below the impoundment, and concomitant with its decline downstream was an increase in B. occidentalis. At all sampling sites the < 75 µm organic seston fraction usually consisted primarily of diatoms (>70%, by areal estimate on microscope slides), whereas the 75–250 µm and > 250 µm seston fractions were predominantly composed of detritus (> 80 %). B. occidentalis larvae consumed primarily detritus and diatoms (> 70 % of the diet), while A. grandis ingested a variety of materials with animals, detritus and/or filamentous algae often constituting > 80% of the diet. Animal material was over-represented in the diets of both species when compared with amounts in the seston. Feeding habits provided partial explanations for the distinct longitudinal distribution patterns of filter-feeding Trichoptera observed in the regulated river.  相似文献
