Salt stress may impose osmotic and respiratory costs on nonhalophytes that limit the availability of carbohydrates for growth. This was examined in kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) by the analysis of soluble carbohydrates, starch, and respiration rates in mature and expanding leaves from plants exposed to moderate salt stress. Plants were grown for 35 days in solution culture at 1, 37, and 75 mM NaCl under greenhouse conditions. Total carbohydrates increased in mature and expanding leaves with increasing salinity. The majority of this increase was as starch. Mature leaf respiration also increased under salt stress. The net accumulation of non-osmotically active carbohydrates in expanding leaves suggests that growth was not limited by the generation or availability of carbohydrates but rather by the ability of the plant to effectively utilize this substrate in osmotic adjustment and growth.  相似文献

The Effect of Gibberellic Acid on Fibre-cell Length   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Measurements were made of fibre-cells from plants of Corchorusolitorius L., Hibiscus cannabinus L., and Cannabis sativa L.Which had been sprayed with gibberellic-acid solution. Fibre-cellsfrom treated plants showed a highly significant increase inlength, 20–130 per cent, for the whole stem and as muchas 400 per cent. for a single intermode. Gibberellic acid increased the variation in cell-length andthe positive skewness of the distribution of the variate. Differences in cell-length can be related to the developmentalsequence of the shoot and the variation in internode-length.  相似文献

Ludwigia perennis L. infected with rice necrosis mosaic virus (RNMV) showed an increase in both shoot growth and leaf size, along with characteristic chlorotic lesions on leaves. The promotion of growth over the controls extended over a considerable period of time (70 d). Inoculation with RNMV resulted in increased plant height, leaf size, stem diameter, and number and size of fiber bundles in Corchorus olitorius L., C. capsularis L., Hibiscus sabdariffa L. and H. cannabinus L.Abbreviation RNMV rice necrosis mosaic virus  相似文献

Treatment of plants of Cochorusoiltorius L., Hibiscus cannabinusL., and Cannabis sativa L. with gibberellic acid induced highlysignificant increases in cell diameter and wall thickness ofproblem fibres. This difference varies along the shoot and ismaximal in the middle region, internodes 10–15. The ratio is higher in treated plants. Gibberellic acid reduces the angle of orientation of the pits to the cellwall and also the pit frequency. Pits in treated plants arelonger and narrower in surface view.  相似文献

Incidence and severity of root-rot caused by the fungus Macrophomina phaseoli was increased in screenhouse-grown kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) seedlings simultaneously infected by the nematode Meloidogyne javanica. In seedlings inoculated at 5, 10 and 15 days of age, root rot lesions increased 70.3, 44.1 and 21.8%, and nematode penetration increased 49.0, 36.7, and 12.3% when both fungus and nematode were present.  相似文献

Fruit and seed abortion in plants have been traditionally attributed to limiting factors such as resources or to chemically mediated dominance hierarchy among the developing sinks. These hypotheses however do not satisfactorily explain the observed patterns of seed and fruit abortion and have also not withstood the test of critical experimentation. In this paper, we propose an alternative model based on the process of self organization used in physics to explain the flow of liquids etc. As proposed here, the model assumes one simple rule, that the probability of any given sink getting a resource molecule is a function of (a) the sink-drawing ability of each unit of the tissue and (b) the amount of resource molecules already moved to that sink. Accordingly, any resource molecule moving to a sink, autocatalytically increases the probability of the latter getting further resources.
We show that starting from a set of identical sinks, all with equal sink-drawing ability, the differential development of sinks and thence their abortion might occur purely as a consequence of the autocatalytic or feedback movement of the resource molecules to the developing sinks. We also show that, such a process can lead to abortion even under resource-abundant conditions, though resource limitation aggravates the extent of abortion. Further, the extent of abortion is shown to be highly dependent on the sink-drawing ability of the species. We offer the test of this prediction in two ways: (a) in Derris indica the extent of abortion increases with the sink drawing ability of the fertilized ovules and (b) treatments involving growth regulators that increase the sink-drawing ability result in increased abortion of seeds and fruits. Based on these, we argue that self organization could be the basic process regulating resource flow to sinks and factors such as resource limitation and chemical inhibition might be additionally aggravating the asymmetry among the developing sinks.  相似文献

High numbers of Harmonia axyridis adults were observed even when aphid populations were low or absent in kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) fields. Compared to a control group given access to water alone or cotton aphids and water, longevity of H. axyridis adults provided with kenaf leaves containing extrafloral nectar significantly increased.  相似文献

To clarify the way in which the light available for growth affectsrespiration in leaves of sun and shade plants, we examined therespiratory properties of mature leaves of Spinacia oleraceaL., a sun species, and of Alocasia macrorrhiza (L.) G. Don.,a shade species, that had been grown at various irradiances. In leaves of S. oleracea, the respiratory rates, on a dry massbasis, decreased with time during the night, and the higherwas the growth irradiance during the day, the higher was therespiratory rate. The marked decreases in the respiratory rateduring the night were accompanied by decreases in the concentrationof carbohydrates in the leaves. By contrast, the respiratoryrates of leaves of A. macrorrhiza were virtually constant throughoutthe night and the absolute rates were lower than those of S.oleracea even though the absolute value of the concentrationof carbohydrates and its decrease at night resembled to thosein S. oleracea. The maximum activities of respiratory enzymeswere also similar to those in S. oleracea. However, the leavesof A. macrorrhiza contained less soluble protein than thoseof S. oleracea. These results suggest that, in S. oleracea, the concentration of carbohydrates might determine the respiratoryrate while such is not the case in A. macrorrhiza. The lowerrespiratory rates in A. macrorrhiza might be due to a lowerdemand for ATP. (Received November 29, 1995; Accepted February 15, 1996)  相似文献

Cytogenetic characteristics confirm that Hibiscus acetosella and Hibiscus cannabinus are outbreeders, while Hibiscus asper, Hibiscus physaloides, Hibiscus sabdariffa and Hibiscus surattensis have evolved into inbreeders. The inbreeding species appear to have co-evolved a floral structure in which some anthers abut on the stigma prior to anthesis. Received: 19 February 1999 / Accepted: 17 June 1999  相似文献

The effect of tetraploidy on leaf characteristics and net gasexchange was studied in diploid (2x ) and autotetraploid (4x) ‘Valencia’ sweet orange (Citrus sinensis (L.)Osb.) and ‘Femminello’ lemon (Citrus limon (L.)Burm. f.) leaves. Comparisons between ploidy levels were madeunder high irradiance (I) in a growth chamber or low total Iin a glasshouse. Tetraploids of both species had thicker leaves, larger mesophyll cell volume and lower light transmittance thandiploids regardless of growth I. Mesophyll surface area perunit leaf area of 2x leaves was 5–15% greater than on4x leaves. Leaf thickness and mesophyll cell volume were greaterin high I leaves than low I leaves. In high I, average leafarea was similar for 2x and 4x leaves, whereas in low I it was30% greater in 4x than in 2x leaves. Nitrogen and chlorophyllconcentration per cell increased with ploidy level in both growthconditions. The ratio of chlorophyll a:b was 25% greater in2x than in 4x leaves. When net CO2assimilation rate (ACO2) wasbased on leaf area, 4x orange leaves had 24–35% lowerACO2than their diploids. There were no significant differencesin ACO2between 2x and 4x orange or lemon leaves when expressedon a per cell basis. Overall, lower ACO2per unit leaf area oftetraploids was related to increase in leaf thickness, largermesophyll cell volume, the decrease in mesophyll area exposedto internal air spaces, and the lower ratio between cell surfaceto cell volume. Such changes probably increased the resistanceto CO2diffusion to the site of carboyxlation in the chloroplasts. Ash and silica contents and their depositional patterns in differenttissues of 27 plants growing in the Ocean Springs area of Mississippi(many grow elsewhere), were determined. Silica content of driedplant parts varied from no more than 0 per cent in Borrichiafrutescens (L.) D.C. stems to 18.76 per cent in Arundinariagigantea (Walt.) Muhl. leaves. Ash content varied from 0·73per cent in Cliftonia monophylla (Lam.) Britt. ex Sarg. stemsto 44·02 per cent in Batis maritima L. leaves. Plantssuch as Batis maritima L., Borrichia frutescens (L.) D.C., Salicorniabigelovii Torr. and Salicornia virginica L. which grew in salinemarshes had high ash contents due NaCl in their tissues. Morusrubra L. leaves had a high silica content for a dicotyledonousplant (3·12 per cent). Energy-dispersive X-ray analysisshows that the distribution of the element silicon is clearlyrelated to certain epidermal structures such as ridges, cellwalls, rows of irregular shaped structures lengthwise of theleaf, dumb-bell shaped ones and especially in trichomes. Therewas a high concentration of silica containing trichomes alongthe veins on the underside of Morus rubra L. leaves and thiswould protect them from insects. The outer parts of the inflorescencesof Ctenium aromaticum (Walt.) Wood, Elymus virginicus L., Juncuspolycephalus Michx. and phragmites communis Trin. were highlysilicified. This should give the seed some protection from insects. The sharp particles would be irritating to oesophageal tissuesand might be implicated in such a cancer.  相似文献

Ash and silica contents and their depositional patterns in differenttissues of 44 Mississippi coastal plants were determined. Silicacontent of dried plants varied from no more than a trace inChenopodium album L. leaves to 7.37 per cent in Zizanopsis miliacea(Michx) Doell & Aschers leaves. Ash content varied from2.50 per cent in Lythrum lineare L. stems to 28.24 per centin Borrichia frutescens (L.) DC leaves. Plants in the same familytend to be alike in their ability to absorb or not absorb silica.Poaceae and Cyperaceae had consistently high concentrationsof silica. In contrast, the Asteraceae studied had very lowsilica contents but often had high contents of other minerals.Dicotyledonous plants studied had consistently lower silicacontents than the monocotyledons. Plants growing in salt watercontained considerable sodium chloride. Spectra were obtainedfor major elements in four different plants. Energy-dispersiveX-ray analysis shows that distribution of the element siliconis clearly related to certain epidermal structures such as guardcells, ridges, dumb-bells and balls that appear in electronmicrographs. Silica was deposited differently in each type ofplant studied. In many of the plants silica was deposited inrows of irregular-shaped particles running lengthwise of theleaf and in guard cells. In others, like Zizanopsis miliacea(Michx) Doell & Aschers, the deposit was sheet-like. Zizaniaaquatica L. not only had a sheet-like deposit, but the depositwas ridged and there were rows of dumb-bell-shaped silica cells.Related plants had similar structures. Euchlaena mexicana Schrad.,Tripsacum dactyloides (L.) L and Manisuris rugosa (Nutt.) Kuntzeall had irregular phytoliths similar to those in Zea mays L. coastal plants, marsh plants, ash content, silica deposition, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, silicon distribution, X-ray diffraction patterns, spectra of elements in plants  相似文献

Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) is an economically important natural fiber crop grown worldwide. However, only 20 expressed tag sequences (ESTs) for kenaf are available in public databases. The aim of this study was to develop large-scale simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers to lay a solid foundation for the construction of genetic linkage maps and marker-assisted breeding in kenaf. We used Illumina paired-end sequencing technology to generate new EST-simple sequences and MISA software to mine SSR markers. We identified 71,318 unigenes with an average length of 1143 nt and annotated these unigenes using four different protein databases. Overall, 9324 complementary pairs were designated as EST-SSR markers, and their quality was validated using 100 randomly selected SSR markers. In total, 72 primer pairs reproducibly amplified target amplicons, and 61 of these primer pairs detected significant polymorphism among 28 kenaf accessions. Thus, in this study, we have developed large-scale SSR markers for kenaf, and this new resource will facilitate construction of genetic linkage maps, investigation of fiber growth and development in kenaf, and also be of value to novel gene discovery and functional genomic studies.  相似文献

The number of tumours developing on primary pinto bean leaves(Phaseolus vulgaris L. variety Pinto) inoculated with Agrobacteriumtumefaciens (Smith and Town.) Conn, strain B6, was increasedby as much as 100 per cent through the addition of several plant-growthfactors and antagonists of some of these factors to the freshlyinoculated leaves. Naphthylacetic acid, gibberellic acid, (2-chloroethyl)trimethylammonium chloride, and adenine gave a biphasic responsewith optimal promotions of tumour initiation at 10-5 to 10-4mg/ml. Tri-iodobenzoic acid and 4-chlorophenoxyisobutyric acidwere most active at 10-1 mg/ml. Mean tumour diameter showeda direct correlation with tumour number in these experiments. The results show tumour initiation to be sensitive to growthfactor changes, possibly through a heightened traumatic responseof the wounded leaves. The growth of the tumours was unaffectedby these additions except as they altered tumour number andthis secondarily affected tumour growth.  相似文献

Uptake and partitioning through the xylem and phloem of K+,Na+, Mg2+ , Ca2+ and Cl were studied over a 9 d intervalduring late vegetative growth of castor bean (Ricinus communisL.) plants exposed to a mean salinity stress of 128 mol m–3NaCl. Empirically based models of flow and utilization of eachion within the whole plant were constructed using informationon ion increments of plant parts, molar ratios of ions to carbonin phloem sap sampled from petioles and stem internodes andpreviously derived information on carbon flow between plantsparts in xylem and phloem in identical plant material. Salientfeatures of the plant budget for K+ were prominent depositionin leaves, high mobility of K+ in phloem, high rates of cyclingthrough leaves and downward translocation of K+ providing theroot with a large excess of K+ . Corresponding data for Na+showed marked retention in the root, lateral uptake from xylemby hypocotyl, stem internodes and petioles leading to low intakeby young leaf laminae and substantial cycling from older leavesback to the root. The partitioning of the anionic componentof NaCl salinity, Cl, contrasted to that of Na+ in thatit was not substantially retained in the root, but depositedmore or less uniformly in stem, petiole and leaf lamina tissues. The flow pattern for Mg2+ showed relatively even depositionthrough the plant but some preferential uptake by young leaves, generally lesser export than import by leaf laminae, and a returnflow of Mg2+ from shoot to root considerably less than the recordedincrement of the root. Ca2+ partitioning contrasted with thatof the other ions in showing extremely poor phloem mobility, leading to progressive preferential accumulation in leaf laminaeand negligible cycling of the element through leaves or root.Features of the response of Ricinus to salinity shown in thepresent study were discussed with data from similar modellingstudies on white lupin (Lupinus albus L.) and barley (Hordeumvulgare L.) Activities of Carboxylation Enzymes in Freshwater Macrophytes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Fifteen species of freshwater macrophytes, mainly from cool, temperate waters, were assayed for ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase(RuBPCase) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase) activities. In extracts from all the species RuBPCase was the most activecarboxylation enzyme, and the RuBPCase/PEPCase ratio was atleast 2·0, even for the submersed species Isoetes lacustrisL. and Littorella unifiora (L.) Aschers. which have been reportedto show Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) activity. The PEPCaseactivity in I.lacustris was lower than that found in some non-CAM-likespecies. In this respect, I.lacustris and L unifiora differfrom most terrestrial CAM plants. However, these two species, along with Potamogeton praelongus Wulf. and Juncus bulbosusvar.fluitans L., had the lowest RuBPCASE/PEPCase ratios, lowerthan found in terrestrial C3 species; suggesting that the potentialfor substantial photosynthetic metabolism of C4 acids existsin some temperate, submersed plants. In the three amphibiousspecies (Potamogeton polygonifolius Pourr., Mentha aquaticaL., and Hippuris vulgaris L.) examined, the aerial leaves exhibitedhigher RuBPCase activities than the submersed leaves. The potential of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) and corn (Zea mays L.) for accumulation of cadmium and zinc was investigated. Plants have been grown in lysimetres containing dredging sludge, a substratum naturally rich in trace metals. Biomass production was determined. Sludge and water percolating from lysimeters were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry. No visible symptoms of toxicity were observed during the three- month culture. Kenaf and corn tolerate trace metals content in sludge. Results showed that Zn and Cd were found in corn and kenaf shoots at different levels, 2.49 mg/kg of Cd and 82.5 mg/kg of Zn in kenaf shoots and 2.1 mg/kg of Cd and 10.19 mg/kg in corn shoots. Quantities of extracted trace metals showed that decontamination of Zn and Cd polluted substrates is possible by corn and kenaf crops. Tolerance and bioaccumulation factors indicated that both species could be used in phytoremediation.  相似文献

The rate of photosynthesis of leaves of perennial ryegrass (Loliumperenne L.) and white clover (Trifollum pratense L.) grown atdifferent temperatures was measured at a range of temperatures. There was a small effect of the temperature at which a leafhad grown on its photosynthetic rate, but a large effect ofmeasurement temperature, especially in bright light, where photosyntheticrates at 15°C were about twice those at 5°C. It appearsthat temperature could affect sward photosynthesis in the field.Ryegrass and clover had similar photosynthetic rates which respondedsimilarly to temperature. Root and Shoot Growth of Plants Treated with Abscisic Acid   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Young seedlings of Capsicum annum L., Commelina communis L.and maize (Zea mays L.) were subjected to a mild water-stressingtreatment and/or treated with abscisic acid (ABA). Plants rootedin soil received a soil-drying treatment and their leaves weresprayed with a 10–4 M solution of ABA. Plants grown insolution culture were stressed by the addition of polyethyleneglycol (PEG) to the rooting medium and ABA was also added tothe rooting medium, either with or without PEG. The effectsof both treatments on the growth of roots and shoots and theultimate root: shoot dry weight ratio were very similar. Shootgrowth was limited both by water stress and by ABA application;while there was some evidence that mild water stress and/orABA application may have resulted in a stimulation of root growth.More severe water stress reduced the growth of roots but theoverall effect of stress was to increase the ratio of rootsto shoots.
