Pomphorhynchus bulbocolli Linkins in Van Cleave, 1919, was considerably more common in fishes of the river-connected Tichigan Lake than of the landlocked Silver Lake, southeastern Wisconsin. It is reported from 17 species of principal, accessory, and occasional definitive hosts (new record in Moxostoma carinatum) and from 13 species of paratenic hosts (new records in Amia calva, Ictalurus punctatus, Lepomis cyanellus, and Pomoxis nigromaculatus). Infection patterns were influenced by fish species, feeding behavior, temperature, availability of intermediate host, type of water body, fish movement, and changes in fish host community. Host roles are not fixed but are often interchangeable. A seasonal cycle in prevalence, intensity, and maturation was evident, with greatest abundance and maturation during summer and recruitment during summer and autumn. Recruitment of new infections, development, and release of eggs, however, occurred all year. Sex ratio changed from near equal in new infections to one more highly in favor of females in older adults. Female fish were considerably more frequently and heavily infected than males. No relationship with fish age (size) was evident. Worms were mostly attached in posterior intestinal locations but initial establishment sites correlated with temperature. Translocation of P. bulbocolli due to competitive exclusion in concurrent infections was not observed. The significance of extraintestinal larval forms in the cycle of transmission was noted. 相似文献

Chub experimentally infected with the acanthocephalan parasite Pomphorhynchus laevis were exposed to 0.01 mg l(-1) Pb(2+) over 5 weeks. Lead was rapidly accumulated in the intestinal worms reaching a steady-state concentration after 4 weeks. This concentration was significantly greater than in the host muscle, liver and intestine and more than 9,000 times higher than the exposure concentration. Lead accumulation in P. laevis increased at a higher exposure concentration but was not correlated with either parasite intensity or with pooled or individual worm weight. The highest lead concentrations were recorded in those specimen of P. laevis that were attached in the posterior intestine. Interestingly, parasitised chub accumulated less lead in their own tissues than uninfected conspecifics. A mechanism of lead uptake by P. laevis and the application of acanthocephalans as accumulation indicators of metal pollution is discussed. 相似文献

This experimental study assessed the role of the microhabitat in the uptake of metals by adult acanthocephalans. We examined the accumulation of lead by adult Pomphorhynchus laevis in the intestine of chub (Leuciscus cephalus) and compared it with that in goldfish, Carassius auratus auratus, in which the parasites penetrate the intestinal wall and enter the body cavity. Chub and goldfish experimentally infected with adult Pomphorhynchus laevis were exposed to 0.01 mg l(-1) Pb(2+) over 3 weeks. Lead was rapidly accumulated in the intestinal acanthocephalans reaching a mean concentration of 7.3 microg g(-1). This concentration was significantly greater than in the host muscle, liver and intestine and more than 730 times higher than the exposure concentration. Intraperitoneal P. laevis in goldfish exposed to lead did not accumulate the metal. Thus, it was conclusively shown that metal accumulation in acanthocephalans is associated with the intestinal location and does not occur in the body cavity. 相似文献

Samples of Gammarus pulex and dace, Leuciscus leuciscus , taken from the River Avon, Hampshire, at intervals over a period of 9 years were examined for the presence of the acanthocephalan. Pomphorhynchus laevis. Changes in the incidence and intensity of infection of P. laevis in dace and in G. pulex and in the frequency distribution of P. laevis in dace were used as indicators of the population size of the parasite. Throughout the period of observation, the parasite showed a similar pattern of distribution along the length of the river, although at some sites its abundance varied from year to year. Levels of both incidence and intensity of infection of P. laevis in both hosts at one specific locality remained fairly constant over the 9-year period, and the annual variations fell within the natural range of monthly variation over any 12-month period. The frequency distribution of P. laevis in dace also exhibited a similar pattern throughout the period. It was thus concluded that the population size of P. laevis had not changed to any great extent over the 9 years. The factors responsible for this constancy are discussed in the light of conclusions drawn from earlier work. 相似文献

The status of species of Pomphorhynchus Monticelli, 1905 is examined and 23 species are recognised as valid. These include P. spindletruncatus n. sp., which is described herein from two species of freshwater fishes in northern Iraq, Aspius vorax Heckel and Barbus xanthopterus (Heckel) (Cyprinidae). Only one other species, P. yunnanensis Wang, 1981, has a spindle-shaped trunk similar to that of P. spindletruncatus, but is distinguished from it by a distinctly different proboscis armature. A key separating the new taxon from other species of Pomphorhynchus is included. P. heronensis Pichelin, 1997 is reassigned to a new pomphorhynchid genus, Pyriproboscis n. g., based on its unique proboscis shape and armature, short proboscis receptacle and tubular cement glands. A key to the genera of the Pomphorhynchidae is also included. 相似文献

The seasonal cycle of Thermocyclops crassus was studied from 1985 to 1987, in the Gronne, a shallow, productive lake. T. crassus was present from late April to early October, while water temperature was above 10 °C. It produced three generations per year. Population peak was usually reached by the second generation, in August. Abundance was positively correlated with water temperature. Females carried 18.3 to 32.3 eggs on average. Reproduction rates were highest in July and August. Sex ratio was low, as females generally outnumbered males. Between October and April copepodites 4 went in diapause, predominantly in the deepest part of the lake and 0–4 cm deep in the bottom mud. Variations in body size were low across the year.
T. crassus coexisted with the cyclopids, Cyclops vicinus and Mesocyclops leuckarti. In 1985 and 1986, abundances of M. leuckarti were low, while those of T. crassus and C. vicinus were high. In 1987 lower water temperatures, caused by cold weather, resulted in a marked decrease of the population density of T. crassus, while the abundance of M. leuckarti increased, and density of C. vicinus remained high. Comparison of the egg duration times of T. crassus, C. vicinus and M. leuckarti showed that at 15 °C and below T. crassus may be outcompeted by its comparatively longer egg development times. However, experiments in limnocorrals showed that T. crassus has an advantage over C. vicinus when fish predation is high.Department of Biology III, University of Ulm 相似文献

The consequences of infection of rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, by an acanthocephalan, Pomphorhynchus laevis Muller, have been studied using light and electron microscopy. The mucosal epithelium, of the gut adjacent to the metasoma of the worm suffered compression and abrasion. The praesoma of P. laevis penetrated the mucosal epithelium, lamina propria, stratum compactum, stratum granulosum, muscularis and serosa of the gut wall, and was invested by a fibrous capsule of inflammation tissue. This was composed of four principal cell types: eosinophilic granular cells (EGCs), type A cells, type B cells and fibroblasts. Some melanocytes and lymphocytes were also present. The role of the EGCs in the inflammation response is not known, but may not be an active one. The type A cells resembled neutrophils of other fish species, and have tentatively been placed in this category. The type B cells, with large cisternae formed by the RER, resembled plasma cells and may have been involved in a humoral response to the acanthocephalan. The integument of P. laevis did not appear to be damaged by the cells of the inflammation tissue, and it seems likely that this host response was incapable of rejecting the parasite. 相似文献

This study describes a new species of Pomphorhynchus collected from Percilia gillissi Girard, 1855 from the Za?artu canal, between the sister basins of the Itata and Laja rivers, in central Chile. Pomphorhynchus moyanoi n. sp. is characterized by an asymmetrical, well-differentiated subspherical bulb and 12-14 longitudinal rows of 13-14 hooks; the third and the fourth hook in each row are stout. Among South American species, P. moyanoi n. sp. shows some similarities to the Chilean species P. yamagutii Schmidt & Hugghins, 1973, but it differs in having a longer neck, larger bulb, and different proboscis armature arrangement. Pomphorhynchus moyanoi n. sp. differs from P. patagonicus Ortubay, Ubeda, Semenas & Kennedy 1991, in the bulb shape (protuberances), number of rows, fourth hook size and basal hook size. Pomphorhynchus moyanoi n. sp. also differs from P. sphaericus in the arrangement of hooks (number of rows and hooks per row), length and width of the proboscis, neck width, and symmetry of the bulb. 相似文献

Pomphorhynchus patagonicus n. sp. is described from Lake Rosario, Chubut Province, Argentina. It is characterized by a long neck forming an asymmetrical bulb with 2 well differentiated dorsal protruberances and 14 alternating rows of 13 and 14 proboscis hooks, each row with a stout fourth hook. It most closely resembles Pomphorhynchus sebastichthydis Yamaguti, 1939, from Japan, but differs in the bulb protruberances and in having more rows of hooks and more hooks per row and in the shapes of the fourth and basal hooks. Among American species P. patagonicus shows some similarities to Pomphorhynchus yamagutii Schmidt and Hugghins, 1973, from Chile, but differs with respect to the longer neck, bulb protruberances, and proboscis armature. Pomphorhynchus patagonicus is endemic to Patagonia, where its definitive type host is the endemic fish Patagonina hatcheri (Atherinidae) and its intermediate host the endemic freshwater amphipod Hyalella patagonica. It has been found also in autochthonous fishes belonging to the families Galaxiidae and Percichthyidae and in introduced salmonid fishes. 相似文献

Oak Mere, the water body studied, is a moderately productive base-poor lowland lake. It has zones of submerged marginal vegetation
growing on sand at the south-west end and on peat at the north-east end. The distributions of L. vespertina and other macroinvertebrates are described in relation to these two distinct areas. Laboratory experiments on behaviour and
survival are described in an attempt to explain the patterns of distribution. The seasonal distribution, variations in population
density, spatial distribution variance in relation to mean density, life cycle, length-weight relationship, growth and biomass
of L. vespertina are then described during two years at the sandy south-west end. The data are used to estimate annual production. Distribution,
life cycle, growth and production are compared with populations in water bodies of lower conductivity in the British Isles
and Scandinavia. 相似文献

During the spring and summer of 1999, Pomphorhynchus laevis was recovered from rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss raised in a Northern Ireland fish farm and from a European eel Anguilla anguilla from the Erne catchment, Ireland. These records appear to be independent of each other. They are the first reports of P. laevis from fish in Northern Ireland. 相似文献

Regular samples of Gammarus pulex and dace Leuciscus leuciscus and occasional grayling Thymallus thymallus and chub L.cephalus were examined from the River Avon, Hampshire, for the presence of the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus leavis . The parasite only occurred in medium sized Gammarus due to lower probability of contact with small gammarids and stunted growth and selective mortality amongst older infected ones. No cycles in incidence or development of the parasite in G.pulex were observed. The parasite infected gammarids and grew in all months, and cystacanths were available throughout the year. Despite seasonal feeding activity and dietary preferences, fish fed on Gammarus and acquired infections in all months. Dispersion of P.laevis within the fish population was related to host feeding behaviour. No evidence of seasonal cycles in incidence or intensity of infection in fish was found, and observed monthly changes in the parasite population were related to changes in size structure of the host sample. In dace and grayling P.laevis grew little and matured only in summer, but in chub it grew and produced acanthors all year. The parasite population in fish appeared to be in a state of dynamic equilibrium and gain and loss of parasites took place throughout the year with the level of infection at any moment being determined primarily by the feeding behaviour of the host. This relationship between host diet, water temperature and parasite population size is discussed, and P.laevis in the R. Avon compared with other localities and other parasites. 相似文献

A brief historical survey demonstrates the differences in opinion concerning the taxonomic status of species within the genus
Pomphorhynchus. The anatomy of P. laevis from a single population in the River Severn, England was found to be highly variable. Much of this variability is produced
as individuals grow. P. laevis possesses circumbursal and circumpenial rings of receptors on the male copulatory bursa. Specimens from Eire and the R. Severn
had identical arrangements of these receptors. A preliminary appraisal of the value of secondary sexual characters as criteria
of specific identity in the Acanthocephala is presented. ac]19860721 相似文献

The distribution, specificity and pathogenicity of the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis (Müller) were studied in the River Avon, Hampshire. The parasite occurred in every fish species, but three categories of hosts could be distinguished. Using growth and maturation as criteria of specificity, only chub Leuciscus cephalus (L.) and barbel Barbus barbus (L.) were recognized as its preferred hosts. Parasites occasionally matured in trout Salmo trutta (L.) and dace Leuciscus leuciscus (L.), but none grew or matured in other host species. Changes in the abundance of P. laevis along the river were related to changes in the abundance of both the intermediate host, Gammarus pulex , and the preferred hosts, and its occurrence in fish to the importance of G. pulex in their diet. In the upper reaches of the River Avon and in other localities populations could be maintained at a low level by parasites maturing in trout, and presence and abundance at any site depended upon the presence and abundance of both intermediate and definitive hosts especially and upon the dietary preferences of the latter. The absence of P. laevis from many parts of Britain is nevertheless still inexplicable. The parasite caused local damage to the intestinal wall of fish, the extent of which varied from species to species, but did not affect host growth rate or cause direct mortality and P. laevis cannot be regarded as an important pathogen in the River Avon or any other British River. 相似文献

1. The abundance of cysts of the bloom‐forming dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense in the sediments of Lake Kinneret and the effects of environmental conditions on encystment were studied in relation to bloom dynamics. Peak cyst formation coincided with the highest growth rate of the population, prior to bloom peak. 2. Peridinium cysts were counted in water and sediment corer samples from 2000 to 2003 and in archived sediment trap samples collected during 1993–94. The cyst data were examined in relation to ambient temperature and nutrient records, and revealed no direct correlation. 3. In laboratory encystment experiments with Peridinium cells collected from the lake, 0.2–3% of the vegetative cells encysted. Temperature, light and cell density had no significant effect on the percentage of encystment. 4. Cysts were always present in the lake sediments but their abundance in ‘non Peridinium’ years was much lower than after a massive bloom. Vegetative cells were always present in the water column after the collapse of the annual dinoflagellate bloom, potentially serving as the inoculum for the next bloom. We propose that the hardy cysts serve as an emergency ‘gene bank’ to initiate population build up following catastrophic die outs. 相似文献

Abstract In order to elucidate the mechanism regulating its seasonal life cycle, the photoperiodic response of Achaearanea tepidariorum has been analysed. Nymphal development was faster in long-day and slower in short-day photoperiods. The combined action of low temperature, poor food supply and short daylength induced diapause at an earlier developmental stage than short days alone. Thus, photoperiod is a primary factor inducing nymphal diapause, but the diapausing instar is influenced by both temperature and food supply. Hibernating nymphs became unresponsive to photoperiod in late December. After hibernation, however, sensitivity was restored and the nymphs remained sensitive to photoperiod throughout their life. This spider could also enter an imaginal or reproductive diapause. Photoperiod was again a primary inducing factor and temperature modified the photoperiodic response to some extent. The induction of the reproductive diapause was almost temperature-compensated whereas development was not. So the involvement of a photoperiodic counter system was suggested. Irrespective of whether the nymph had experienced diapause or not, the imaginal diapause was induced in response to a short-day photoperiod after adult moult. Based on these observations, the seasonal life cycle and the adaptive significance of nymphal and imaginal diapause are discussed. 相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The drift of Gammarus pulex in a population in which approximately 20% of adults are infected with the acanthocephalan parasite Pomphorhynchus laevis was monitored at margin and mid-river sites in the River Teme, England over a 24-h period in mid-summer.
2. Drift densities showed a diurnal pattern with a large increase at night, independent of parasite burden.
3. There was no significant effect of site (margin or mid-river) on the proportion of parasitized and unparasitized G. pulex found in the drift or the benthos.
4. The drift of parasitized G. pulex was significantly greater than unparasitized animals. Gammarids harbouring only one parasite were found in significantly higher proportions in the drift than those with two or more parasites.
5. At both sites (margin and mid-river) the proportion of unparasitized adult G. pulex in the drift was significantly lower than that in the benthos. However, there was a significantly higher proportion of parasitized animals in the drift than in the benthos. 相似文献
