Aflatoxins are produced as secondary metabolites under conducive climatic conditions by Aspergillus flavus. The incidence of aflatoxin varies with environmental conditions, genotype, and location. An expanded understanding of the interaction of the plant, fungus, and weather conditions is needed to further elucidate the field infection process of maize by A. flavus and subsequent aflatoxin contamination. One of the problems in evaluating maize hybrids for resistance to kernel infection and aflatoxin contamination is identifying a time period and environmental conditions that are most advantageous. Three maize genotypes (Pioneer Brand 3223, Mo18W × Mp313E, and Mp313E × Mp420) were evaluated from 1998 to 2002 in response to A. flavus inoculation and aflatoxin contamination and weather conditions favorable for aflatoxin contamination were identified. The highest aflatoxin levels were observed in 1998 and 2000 (1186 and 901 ng g−1; P < 0.0001); while the lowest levels were detected in 1999 (39 ng g−1). Pioneer 3223 had significantly higher levels (1198 ng g−1) than Mp313E × Mp420 (205 ng g−1), and Mo18W ×Mp313E (161 ng g−1; P < 0.0001). The hybrids had six weather-related variables in common that were positively correlated with aflatoxin accumulation. Four of these occurred during 65–85 days after planting and were temperature-related. These results suggest that regardless of the hybrid’s maturity or physiological development, the time from 65 to 85 days after planting may be indicative of a period of stress which leads to greater aflatoxin accumulation at harvest. Legume tissue quality is a key factor for enhancement of feed resources and contribution to soil fertility in mixed crop-livestock production systems. To compare methods used by soil scientists and animal-nutritionists to assess quality of plant materials, three woody tropical legumes with contrasting qualities were used: Indigofera zollingeriana Miq. (Indigofera), Cratylia argentea Benth. (Cratylia) and Calliandra houstoniana (Mill.) Stan. var. calothyrsus (Meiss.) Barn. CIAT 20400 (Calliandra). Plant material of each legume was used either fresh, freeze-dried, frozen, oven-dried (60 °C) or air-dried in order to estimate extents and rates of aerobic degradation in litterbags on the soil during 140 days and anaerobic degradation in an in-vitro gas production experiment during 144 h. Results showed, that aerobic decomposition rates of leaf tissues were highest for Indigofera (k = 0.013 day−1), followed by Cratylia (k = 0.004 day−1) and Calliandra (k = 0.002 day−1). Gas production rates evaluated under anaerobic conditions, were highest for Indigofera (k = 0.086 h−1), intermediate for Cratylia (k = 0.062 h−1) and lowest for Calliandra (k = 0.025 h−1). Decomposition and gas production rates differed (P < 0.001) among species. Differences between post harvest treatments were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The extent of decomposition was highest for Indigofera (82.5%, w/w), followed by Cratylia (44.6%) and Calliandra (26.4%). The extent of gas production was highest for Indigofera (218.8 ml), followed by Cratylia (170.1ml) and Calliandra (80.1 ml). Extent of decomposition and extent of gas production were significantly different (P < 0.001) among species. In contrast to the extent of decomposition, the extent of gas production was affected (P < 0.001) by sample post harvest treatments. Highest gas production was observed for the fresh and frozen treatments. The forage quality parameters that best correlated with aerobic and anaerobic degradation were lignin+bound condensed tannins, lignin+total condensed tannins/N, indigestible acid detergent fibre (IADF) and in-vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD). Results showed that differences in decomposition and digestibility were more related to intrinsic plant quality parameters than to changes in tissue quality induced by post harvest treatments. In addition, we found that rate of aerobic degradation of legume leaves on the soil was highly correlated (r > 0.80, P < 0.001) to IVDMD and gas production (r = 0.53, P < 0.001). These results indicate that plant measurements (IADF, IVDMD and gas production) used to assess forage quality in animal nutrition studies are more rapid and resource saving predictors for aerobic decomposition of tropical legumes than initial plant quality ratios (lignin+polyphenols/N and lignin+total condensed tannins/N) commonly used by many researchers. Furthermore, this study confirms the potential usefulness of IVDMD for screening tropical legumes for soil fertility management.  相似文献

Although fine roots might account for 50% of the annual net primary productivity in moist tropical forests, there are relatively few studies of fine-root dynamics in this biome. We examined fine-root distributions, mass, growth and tissue N and C concentrations for six tree species established in 16-year-old plantations in the Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica in a randomized-block design (n = 4). The study included five native species (Hyeronima alchorneoides, Pentaclethra macroloba, Virola koschnyi, Vochysia ferruginea and Vochysia guatemalensis) and one exotic (Pinus patula). Under all species >60% of the total fine-root mass to 1 m deep was located in the uppermost 15 cm of the soil. Fine-root live biomass and necromass (i.e., the mass of dead fine-roots) varied significantly among species but only within the uppermost 15 cm, with biomass values ranging from 182 g m−2 in Pinus to 433 g m−2 in Hyeronima plots, and necromass ranging from 48 g m−2 in Pinus to 183 g m−2 in Virola plots. Root growth, measured using ingrowth cores, differed significantly among species, ranging from 304 g m−2 year−1 in Pinus to 1,308 g m−2 year−1 in Hyeronima. These growth rates were one to five times those reported for moist temperate areas. Turnover rates of fine-root biomass ranged from 1.6 to 3.0 year−1 in Virola and Hyeronima plots, respectively. Fine-root biomass was significantly and positively correlated with fine-root growth (r = 0.79, P < 0.0001), but did not correlate with fine-root turnover (r = 0.10, P = 0.20), suggesting that fine-root accumulation is a function of growth rate rather than mortality. Fine-root longevity was not correlated (r = 0.20, P = 0.34) and growth was negatively correlated with root N concentration across species (r = −0.78, P < 0.0001), contrary to reported trends for leaves, perhaps because N was relatively abundant at this site.  相似文献

To investigate damaging mechanisms of chilling and salt stress to peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) leaves, LuHua 14 was used in the present work upon exposure to chilling temperature (4°C) accompanied by high irradiance (1,200 μmol m−2 s−1) (CH), salt stress accompanied by high irradiance (1,200 μmol m−2 s−1) (SH), and high-irradiance stress (1,200 μmol m−2 s−1) at room temperature (25°C) (NH), respectively. Additionally, plants under low irradiance (100 μmol m−2 s−1) at room temperature (25°C) were used as control plants (CK). Relative to CK and NH treatments, both the maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) and the absorbance at 820 nm decreased greatly in peanut leaves under CH and SH stress, which indicated that severe photoinhibition occurred in peanut leaves under such conditions. Initial fluorescence (Fo), 1 − qP and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) in peanut leaves significantly increased under CH- and SH stress. Additionally, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), one of the key enzymes of water-water cycle, decreased greatly, the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA) and membrane permeability increased. These results suggested that damages to peanut photosystems might be related to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by excess energy, and the water-water cycle could not dissipate energy efficiently under the stress of CH and SH, which caused the accumulation of ROS greatly. CH and SH had similar damaging effects on peanut photosystems, except that CH has more severe effects. All the results showed that CH- and SH stress has similar damaging site and mechanisms in peanut leaves.  相似文献

Damaged and developing kernels of peanut (Arachis hypogaea) are susceptible to colonization by fungi in the Aspergillus flavus group which, under certain conditions, produces aflatoxins prior to harvest. Our objective was to determine whether infection of peanut roots and pods by Meloidogyne arenaria increases aflatoxin contamination of the kernels when peanut is subjected to drought stress. The experiment was a completely randomized 2-x-2 factorial with 6 replicates/treatment. The treatment factors were nematodes (plus and minus M. arenaria) and fungus (plus and minus A. flavus inoculum). The experiment was conducted in 2001 and 2002 in microplots under an automatic rain-out shelter. In treatments where A. flavus inoculum was added, aflatoxin concentrations were high (> 1,000 ppb) and not affected by nematode infection; in treatments without added fungal inoculum, aflatoxin concentrations were greater (P ≤ 0.05) in kernels from nematode-infected plants (1,190 ppb) than in kernels from uninfected plants (79 ppb). There was also an increase in aflatoxin contamination of kernels with increasing pod galling (r² = 0.83 in 2001, r² = 0.43 in 2002; P ≤ 0.04). Colonization of kernels by A. flavus increased with increasing pod galling (r² = 0.18; P = 0.04) in 2001 but not in 2002. Root-knot nematodes may have a greater role in enhancing aflatoxin contamination of peanut when conditions are not optimal for growth and aflatoxin production by fungi in the A. flavus group.  相似文献

Plants of two cytotypes (2n=2x=20, and 2n=3x=30) of pinto peanut (Arachis pintoi Krapov. & W.C. Gregory) were regenerated through somatic embryogenesis. Embryogenic calli were induced from shoot tips or immature leaves dissected from in vitro growing plants. In the case of the diploid peanut the best somatic embryogenesis was achieved when shoot tips were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 10 mg dm−3 Picloram (PIC) and 0.1 mg dm−3 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) or when explants from immature leaves were cultured on MS + 10 mg dm−3 PIC + 0.01 mg dm−3 BAP. In the case of triploid peanut the highest number of somatic embryos was obtained when shoot tips were cultured on MS + 10 mg dm−3 PIC + 0.01 mg dm−3 BAP or when immature leaves were cultured on MS + 20 mg dm−3 PIC + 0.01 mg dm−3 BAP. Somatic embryos were converted into plants by culture on MS + 0.01 mg dm−3 naphthaleneacetic acid + 0.01 mg dm−3 BAP. Plants were successfully transferred to pots in greenhouse.  相似文献

Florunner peanuts grown in research plots were subjected to 5 soil temperature and moisture treatment regimes resulting in A. flavus infestation and subsequent aflatoxin contamination in drought-stressed peanuts. Treatments imposed beginning 85 days after planting were drought, drought with heated soil and 3 drought treatments with cooled soil. The incidence of A. flavus in drought-stressed, unshelled, sound mature kernels (SMK) decreased with decreases in the mean 5 cm deep soil temperature. The incidence of A. flavus was greater in inedible categories and in damaged kernels than in SMK. The mean, threshold, geocarposphere temperature required for aflatoxin development during the latter part of the peanut growth cycle was found to be between 25.7° C and 27° C.  相似文献

Temporal changes in α-and β-glucosidase activities, dissolved organic matter content, and bacterial biomass were studied in the superficial sediment layer of a eutrophic lake during the period of anoxia. The mean α-and β-glucosidase activities were 30.7±11.0 and 15.1±6.2 nmol h−1 g−1 of dry sediment, respectively. The specifc β-glucosidase activity seemed to be stimulated by carbohydrates (r=0.80, P<0.05), whereas the specifc α-glucosidase activity was negatively correlated with the dissolved protein concentration (r=−0.72, P<0.10). To test the effect of organic matter on hydrolytic activities under controlled conditions, changes in specific activities were studied in relation to the concentrations of different types of organic matter: phytoplankton, polymers (proteins, cellobiose, and starch) and monomers (glucose and amino acids). The specifc α-and β-glucosidase activities were strongly induced by their natural substrates (starch and cellobiose, respectively) (P<0.05) and were not inhibited by glucose. Proteins inhibited these activities (P<0.05), whereas supplementation with amino acids had no effect on specifc glycolytic activities.  相似文献

Available experimental data suggest that adiponectin and thyroid hormones have biological interaction in vivo. However, the effects of thyroid hormones on adipose adiponectin gene expression in thyroid dysfunction are unclear. We induced hyper- (HYPER) and hypothyroidism (HYPO) by daily administration of a 12 mg/l of levothyroxine and 250 mg/l of methimazole in drinking water of rats, respectively, for 42 days. The white adipose tissues and serum sample were taken on days 15, 28, 42 and also 2 weeks after treatment cessation. Analysis of adiponectin gene expression was performed by real-time PCR and 2−ΔΔct method. The levels of adipose tissue adiponectin mRNA in the HYPO rats were decreased during the 6-week treatment when compared to control rats (<0.05) and were increased significantly 2 weeks after HYPO cessation (P < 0.05). This decline in adiponectin gene expression occurred in parallel with a decrease in T3, T4, fT3 and fT4 concentrations (P < 0.05). In opposite to HYPO rats, adipose adiponectin gene expression was increased in HYPER rats during the 6-week treatment in parallel with an increase the thyroid hormones concentrations (P < 0.05), and its expression was decreased 2 weeks after HYPER cessation (P < 0.05). Adiponectin gene expression levels showed significant negative correlations with concentrations of LDL (HYPO; r = −0.806, P = 0.001 and HYPER; r = −0.749, P = 0.002), triglyceride (HYPO; r = −0.825, P = 0.001 and HYPER; r = −0.824, P = 0.001) and significant positive correlations with concentrations of glucose (HYPO; r = 0.674, P = 0.004 and HYPER; r = 0.866, P = 0.001) and HDL (HYPO; r = 0.755, P = 0.001 and HYPER; r = 0.839, P = 0.001). The current study provides evidence that adiponectin gene expression in adipose tissue is regulated by thyroid hormones at the translation level and that lipid and carbohydrate disturbances in a patient with thyroid dysfunction may be, in part, due to adiponectin gene expression changes.  相似文献

Sugar beet cv. Rizor was grown for five growing seasons (2002–2006) in field conditions in Thessaly, central Greece. A total of 55 samplings took place during the growing seasons and allometric growth of the leaves was monitored. Highly significant (p<0.001) quadratic relationships were found between individual leaf mass (LM), individual leaf area (LA), aboveground dry biomass (ADB), and leaf area index (LAI). Only the LM-LA relationship (LA = 43.444 LM2 − 10.693 LM + 118.34) showed a relatively high r 2 (0.63) and thus could be used for prediction of LA. Specific leaf area (SLA) was significantly related with leaf water content (LWC) (SLA = 26 279 LWC2 − 44 498 LWC + 18 951, r 2 = 0.91, p<0.001) and thus LWC could be a good indirect predictor of SLA in this cultivar.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between maximal anaerobic power (P max) and corresponding optimal velocity (V opt) and habitual physical activity (PA) on the one hand and with maximal oxygen consumption (O2max) on the other hand, in elderly women. Twenty-nine community dwelling, healthy women aged 66–82 years participated in the study. PA was evaluated using the Questionnaire d'Activite Physique Saint-Etienne (QAPSE) and expressed using two QAPSE activity indices: mean habitual daily energy expenditure (MHDEE) and daily energy expenditure corresponding to leisure time sports activities (sports activity). The subjects' P max and V opt were measured while they cycled on a friction-loaded non-isokinetic cycle ergometer. P max was expressed relative to body mass [P max/kg(W · kg−1)], and relative to the mass of two quadriceps muscles [P max /Quadr(W·kgQuadr −1)]. A negative relationship between P max/kg (Spearman's r = −0.56; P < 0.01), P max/Quadr (r = −0.53; P < 0.01) and V opt (r = −0.45; P < 0.05) and age was found. P max/kg was positively associated with MHDEE (r = 0.51; P < 0.01) and sports activity (r = 0.58; P < 0.01), as were P max/Quadr and V opt (r = 0.55; P < 0.01 and r = 0.54; P < 0.01, respectively). P max/kg, P max/Quadr and V opt correlated positively with O2max. The positive relationship between ergometer measurements and PA indices was similar to that between O2max and PA. P max/kg was, moreover, closely related to V opt (r = 0.77; P < 0.001). When a multiple stepwise regression analysis was used to select the variables influencing ergometer measurements, MHDEE contributed significantly to P max/kg variance, whereas sports activity contributed to P max/Quadr and V opt variances. In conclusion, the data from this cross-sectional study suggest that in healthy elderly women habitual PA, and especially leisure time PA, alleviates the decline of the P max of the quadriceps muscles. The intake of mycotoxin-contaminated feeds can lead to nutrient losses and may have adverse effects on animal health and on productivity. The aims of this study were (1) to determine the mycobiota present in poultry feed samples, and (2) to evaluate the natural occurrence of aflatoxin B1, fumonisin B1 and zearalenone. Fungal counts were similar between all culture media tested (103 CFU g−1). The most frequent genus isolated was Penicillium spp. (41.26%) followed by Aspergillus spp. (33.33%) and Fusarium spp. (20.63%). High precision liquid chromatography was applied to quantify aflatoxin B1 and fumonisin B1. Thin layer chromatography was used to determine zearalenone levels. Aflatoxin B1 values ranged between 1.2 and 17.5 μg kg−1. Fumonisin B1 levels ranged between 1.5 and 5.5 μg g−1. Zearalenone levels ranged between 0.1 and 7 μg g−1. The present study shows the simultaneous occurrence of two carcinogenic mycotoxins, aflatoxin B1 and fumonisin B1, together with another Fusarium mycotoxin (zearalenone) in␣feed intended for poultry consumption. Many samples contained AFB1 levels near the permissible maximum and it could affect young animals. A synergistic toxic response is possible in animals under simultaneous exposure.  相似文献

Pea (Pisum sativum L.) seedlings were exposed to low, moderate, and high regimes of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) (ld-B 4.4, md-B 13.3, and hd-B 26.5 kJ m−2 day−1), or ultraviolet-C (UV-C) (ld-C 0.1, md-C 0.3, and hd-C 0.6 kJ m−2 day−1) radiations. Concentrations of total phenols, free proline, and low-molecular thiol groups were determined in the last formed (young) and older leaves after irradiation for 7, 10 or 14 consecutive days. Shoot length and weight did not change markedly after 14 days of ld-B and ld-C, but reduced substantially after moderate and high regimes of both UV-B and UV-C. Proline decreased upon high doses of irradiation, while in ld-B treated plants, by contrast, an increase was observed. The reduction in total phenols and thiols was stronger after hd-B than after hd-C irradiations, although an induction was found in ld-B treated plants. In contrast to ld-B, ld-C regime led mainly to reductions or insignificant changes in proline, phenols, and thiols. Therefore, the stress-protection mechanisms are different between low UV-B and UV-C irradiation regimes in regard to proline, phenols, and thiols.  相似文献

Species richness of Protozoa in Japanese lakes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
N. Takamura  Y. Shen  P. Xie 《Limnology》2000,1(2):91-106
The protozoan fauna and species richness in the pelagic zone of 15 Japanese lakes were investigated in 1996 using polyurethane foam (PF) substrates. The most common species were flagellates, such as Cryptomonas erosa, Oikomonas termo, and Pleuromonas jaculans. Cinetochilum margaritaceum and Actinophrys sol were the most common species of the Ciliata and Sarcodina, respectively. The similarity of species occurrence was calculated from presence/absence data, but this revealed no clear trend with respect to the influence of lake properties such as trophic state, surface area, or mean depth. The occurrence pattern of Protozoa was most similar in L. Chuzenji and L. Biwa (north basin), two oligomesotrophic natural lakes. Log species richness was positively correlated with log total phosphorus (r = 0.54, P < 0.05) and negatively with log mean depth (r = −0.58, P < 0.05). The diversity index (Margalef's formula), highly correlated with the total species number (r = 0.85, P < 0.01), was negatively correlated with log lake area (r = −0.71, P < 0.01). The logarithm of Phytomastigophora number was positively correlated with log total nitrogen (r = 0.53, P < 0.05), and the logarithm of Ciliata number was negatively correlated with log lake area (r = −0.55, P < 0.05). The species richness of Protozoa on PF substrates was determined by both the nutrient status of the lake and the distance from the location of the suspended PF substrate to the lake bottom or shore. In the dry savannas of West and Central Africa, where low soil fertility, unpredictable rainfall, weed competition and recurrent drought are major constraints to maize production, the development of tropical maize genotypes with high and stable yields under drought and low-nitrogen condition is very important since access to these improved genotypes may be the only affordable alternative to many small scale farmers. Field trials were conducted in 2002 and 2003 at Ikenne southwestern Nigeria to investigate the effect of weed pressures and drought stress on 2 maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids (9134-14, 9803-9) and 2 open-pollinated varieties (STREVIWD, IYFDCO1). Irrigation was withdrawn 4 weeks after planting (about four weeks to mid-flowering) in the drought stress while the adjacent watered treatment had irrigation throughout the growing period. The weed pressures were the completely weeded plots (hand weeding every week) and weedy plots (weeded once, 2 weeks after planting). The experiment was a split plot in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Drought stress reduced the stover weight and grain yield of the maize cultivars by 6% and 34% respectively. Weed-free plots had maize with higher agronomic traits than unweeded treatments. Hybrid 9803-9 was more susceptible to drought and weed stress as indicated in the stover weight and grain yield. STREVIWD an open-pollinated variety (OPV) and Hybrid 9134-14 had superior performances in terms of grain yield and shorter anthesis silking interval. Soil moisture content was higher in the unweeded plots while the uptake of moisture was highest in drought susceptible hybrid 9803-9. Irrespective of the genotypes, maize (hybrid and OPV) was more tolerant to drought in a weed-free environment than in unweeded conditions. There existed a negative but significant correlation between weed biomass and chlorophyll content (−0.29, P < 0.01), grain yield (−0.45, P < 0.05), ear plant−1 (−0.27, P < 0.05) and kernel-number (−0.366 P < 0.01).  相似文献

Critical levels of selenium in raya (Brassica juncea Czern L.), maize (Zea mays L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and rice (Oryza sativa L.) were worked out by growing these crops in an alkaline silty loam soil treated with different levels of selenite-Se ranging from 1 to 25 μg g−1 soil. Significant decrease in dry matter yield was observed above a level of 5 μg Se g−1 soil in raya and maize; 4 μg Se g−1 soil in wheat and 10 μg Se g−1 soil in rice shoots. The critical level of Se in plants above which significant decrease in yield would occur was found to be 104.8 μg g−1 in raya, 76.9 μg g−1 in maize, 41.5 μg g−1 in rice and 18.9 μg g−1 in wheat shoots. Significant coefficients of correlation were observed between Se content above the critical level and dry matter yield of raya as well as rice (r = −0.99, P ≤ 0.01), wheat (r = −0.97, P ≤ 0.01) and maize ((r = −0.96, P ≤ 0.01). A synergistic relationship was observed between S and Se content of raya (r = 0.96, P ≤ 0.01), wheat (r = 0.89, P ≤ 0.01), rice (r = 0.85, P ≤ 0.01) and maize (r = 0.84, P ≤ 0.01). Raya, maize and rice absorbed Se in levels toxic for animal consumption (i.e. > 5 mg Se kg−1) when the soil was treated with more than 1.5 μg Se g−1. In case of wheat, application of Se more than 3 μg g−1 soil resulted in production of toxic plants.  相似文献

The spatial pattern of foliar stable carbon isotope compositions (δ13C) of dominant species and their relationships with environmental factors in seven sites, Yangling, Yongshou, Tongchuan, Fuxian, Ansai, Mizhi and Shenmu, standing from south to north in the Loess Plateau of China, was studied. The results showed that in the 121 C3 plant samples collected from the Loess Plateau, the foliar δ13C value ranged from −22.66‰ to −30.70‰, averaging −27.04‰. The foliar δ13C value varied significantly (P<0.01) among the seven sites, and the average δ13C value increased by about 1.69‰ from Yangling in the south to Shenmu in the north as climatic drought increased. There was a significant difference in foliar δ13C value among three life-forms categorized from all the plant samples in the Loess Plateau (P<0.001). The trees (−26.74‰) and shrubs (−26.68‰) had similar mean δ13C values, both significantly (P<0.05) higher than the mean δ13C value of herbages (−27.69‰). It was shown that the trees and shrubs had higher WUEs and employed more conservative water-use patterns to survive drier habitats in the Loess Plateau. Of all the C3 species in the Loess Plateau, the foliar δ13C values were significantly and negatively correlated with the mean annual rainfall (P<0.001) and mean annual temperature (P<0.05), while being significantly and positively correlated with the latitude (P<0.001) and the annual solar radiation (P<0.01). In general, the foliar δ13C values increased as the latitude and solar radiation increased and the rainfall and temperature decreased. The annual rainfall as the main influencing factor could explain 13.3% of the spatial variations in foliar δ13C value. A 100 mm increment in annual rainfall would result in a decrease by 0.88‰ in foliar δ13C values.  相似文献

The differences in pigment levels, photosynthetic activity and the chlorophyll fluorescence decrease ratio R Fd (as indicator of photosynthetic rates) of green sun and shade leaves of three broadleaf trees (Platanus acerifolia Willd., Populus alba L., Tilia cordata Mill.) were compared. Sun leaves were characterized by higher levels of total chlorophylls a + b and total carotenoids x + c as well as higher values for the weight ratio chlorophyll (Chl) a/b (sun leaves 3.23–3.45; shade leaves: 2.74–2.81), and lower values for the ratio chlorophylls to carotenoids (a + b)/(x + c) (with 4.44–4.70 in sun leaves and 5.04–5.72 in shade leaves). Sun leaves exhibited higher photosynthetic rates P N on a leaf area basis (mean of 9.1–10.1 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1) and Chl basis, which correlated well with the higher values of stomatal conductance G s (range 105–180 mmol m−2 s−1), as compared to shade leaves (G s range 25–77 mmol m−2 s−1; P N: 3.2–3.7 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1). The higher photosynthetic rates could also be detected via imaging the Chl fluorescence decrease ratio R Fd, which possessed higher values in sun leaves (2.8–3.0) as compared to shade leaves (1.4–1.8). In addition, via R Fd images it was shown that the photosynthetic activity of the leaves of all trees exhibits a large heterogeneity across the leaf area, and in general to a higher extent in sun leaves than in shade leaves.  相似文献

The growth, biofiltering efficiency and uptake rates of Ulva clathrata were studied in a series of outdoor tanks, receiving waste water directly from a shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) aquaculture pond, under constant aeration and two different water regimes: (1) continuous flow, with 1 volume exchange a day (VE day-1) and (2) static regime, with 1 VE after 4 days. Water temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphate (PO4), chlorophyll-a (chl-a), total suspended solids (TSS), macroalgal biomass (fresh weight) and tissue nutrient assimilation were monitored over 12 days. Ulva clathrata was highly efficient in removing the main inorganic nutrients from effluent water, stripping 70–82% of the total ammonium nitrogen (TAN) and 50% PO4 within 15 h. Reductions in control tanks were much lower (Tukey HSD, P < 0.05). After 3 days, the mean uptake rates by the seaweed biomass under continuous flow were 3.09 mg DIN g DW day−1 (383 mg DIN m−2 day−1) and 0.13 mg PO4 g DW day−1 (99 mg PO4 m−2 day−1), being significantly higher than in the static regime (Tukey HSD, P < 0.05). The chl-a decreased in seaweed tanks, suggesting that U. clathrata inhibited phytoplankton growth. Correlations between the cumulative values of DIN removed from the water and total nitrogen assimilated into the seaweed biomass (r = 0.7 and 0.8, P < 0.05), suggest that nutrient removal by U. clathrata dominated over other processes such as phytoplankton and bacterial assimilation, ammonia volatilization and nutrient precipitation.  相似文献

The morphological, anatomical and physiological variations of leaf traits were analysed during Quercus ilex L. leaf expansion. The leaf water content (LWC), leaf area relative growth rate (RGRl) and leaf dry mass relative growth rate (RGRm) were the highest (76±2 %, 0.413 cm2 cm−2 d−1, 0.709 mg mg−1 d−1, respectively) at the beginning of the leaf expansion process (7 days after bud break). Leaf expansion lasted 84±2 days when air temperature ranged from 13.3±0.8 to 27.6±0.9 °C. The net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and chlorophyll content per fresh mass (Chl) increased during leaf expansion, having the highest values [12.62±1.64 μmol (CO2) m−2 s−1, 0.090 mol (H2O) m−2 s−1, and 1.03±0.08 mg g−1, respectively] 56 days after bud break. Chl was directly correlated with leaf dry mass (DM) and P N. The thickness of palisade parenchyma contributed to the total leaf thickness (263.1±1.5 μm) by 47 %, spongy layer thickness 38 %, adaxial epidermis and cuticle thickness 9 %, and abaxial epidermis and cuticle thickness 6 %. Variation in leaf size during leaf expansion might be attributed to a combination of cells density and length, and it is confirmed by the significant (p<0.001) correlations among these traits. Q. ilex leaves reached 90 % of their definitive structure before the most severe drought period (beginning of June — end of August). The high leaf mass area (LMA, 15.1±0.6 mg cm−2) at full leaf expansion was indicative of compact leaves (2028±100 cells mm−2). Air temperature increasing might shorten the favourable period for leaf expansion, thus changing the final amount of biomass per unit leaf area of Q. ilex.  相似文献
