We examined the ecdysteroid content of eggs from crowd-reared and solitary-reared desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, throughout embryogenesis from the day of egg laying until shortly before hatching on day 14. Depending on the time during incubation, ecdysteroid content in eggs from crowd-reared females was 5-10 times higher than in eggs from solitary-reared females. Our investigation revealed two peaks in ecdysteroid content of eggs from crowd-reared females, a small one at day 3 and a major peak at day 10 of incubation. At days 10, 12 and 14 during incubation of eggs from crowd-reared females, we found a positive correlation between egg mass and ecdysteroid content. There was no difference between eggs from the bottom and the top of individual egg pods, but variation in ecdysteroid content between egg pods from different females was considerable in all treatment groups. A brief crowding of solitary-reared females at the time of egg laying, a treatment that initiates maternally mediated gregarization of the developing offspring, had no effect on the consistently low ecdysteroid content in the eggs. This result rules out the possibility that the crowding experience of females is transmitted to the offspring by variation in the total amount of ecdysteroids in their eggs.  相似文献

Transgenerational effects of parental experience on offspring immunity are well documented in the vertebrate literature (where antibodies play an obligatory role), but have only recently been described in invertebrates. We have assessed the impact of parental rearing density upon offspring disease resistance by challenging day-old locust hatchlings (Schistocerca gregaria) from either crowd- or solitary-reared parents with the fungal pathogen Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum. When immersed in standardized conidia suspensions, hatchlings from gregarious parents suffered greater pathogen-induced mortality than hatchlings from solitary-reared parents. This observation contradicts the basic theory of positive density-dependent prophylaxis and demonstrates that crowding has a transgenerational influence upon locust disease resistance.  相似文献

There is an increasing appreciation of the importance of transgenerational effects on offspring fitness, including in relation to immune function and disease resistance. Here, we assess the impact of parental rearing density on offspring resistance to viral challenge in an insect species expressing density-dependent prophylaxis (DDP); i.e. the adaptive increase in resistance or tolerance to pathogen infection in response to crowding. We quantified survival rates in larvae of the cotton leafworm (Spodoptera littoralis) from either gregarious- or solitary-reared parents following challenge with the baculovirus S. littoralis nucleopolyhedrovirus. Larvae from both the parental and offspring generations exhibited DDP, with gregarious-reared larvae having higher survival rates post-challenge than solitary-reared larvae. Within each of these categories, however, survival following infection was lower in those larvae from gregarious-reared parents than those from solitary-reared, consistent with a transgenerational cost of DDP immune upregulation. This observation demonstrates that crowding influences lepidopteran disease resistance over multiple generations, with potential implications for the dynamics of host–pathogen interactions.  相似文献

The effects of parental and progeny rearing densities on locomotor activity in 1st-stadium nymphs of the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria, were observed over a 24- or 36-h period using an actograph. Newly hatched nymphs showed a small activity peak shortly after hatching and the peak level was significantly higher in offspring (gregarious nymphs) of crowd-reared adults than in those (solitarious nymphs) of isolated-reared adults. However, no significant difference was found between the two groups in maximum activity levels exhibited after the initial peak. Post-hatching crowding enhanced locomotor activity during 2-5 h of measurements in 2-day-old nymphs. In this case, the parental density resulted in no significant influence on locomotor activity. However, the maximum activity level shown later in the observation period was higher in gregarious nymphs than in solitarious nymphs. Interestingly, this parental effect was more pronounced in nymphs reared in group than in those reared in isolation. The parental density appeared to affect the degree of response to crowding in the progeny. No evidence was found for the phase accumulation in terms of locomotor activity. The variation observed in locomotor activity among geographical populations did not correspond to their phylogenetic relationships.  相似文献

Abstract. Phase characteristics of locusts from parents that experienced different population densities were investigated under field conditions in Morocco. The density experienced by adults induced a marked phase change in colour, behaviour and morphometry of their offspring. A high-density subpopulation gave rise to a preponderance of black hatchlings that exhibited a high level of aggregation as later stage nymphs and showed gregarious morphometric features as adults, whereas a low-density subpopulation produced a majority of green hatchlings with a lesser tendency to group as final-instar nymphs and more solitarious morphometry as adults. The constrained isolation of insects from the low-density subpopulation, or crowding of insects from the high-density subpopulation, resulted in a behavioural and morphometric change towards even more solitarious characteristics in the former and more pronounced gregarious characteristics in the latter, relative to field-caught insects of the same age. These results from the field are consistent with those in the laboratory and provide more evidence for the dual roles of an individual locust's experience of crowding as well as that of its parents in density-dependent phase change.  相似文献

Desert locusts demonstrate pronounced density-dependent polyphenism: a complex suite of traits shifts over the lifetime of an individual in response to crowding or isolation. These changes also accumulate across generations through a maternal effect. Female desert locusts alter the developmental trajectory of their offspring in response to their own experience of crowding. The mother possesses a memory of both the recency and extent of crowding and shifts the phase state of her hatchlings accordingly. Extensive experimental work has shown that offspring behaviour is controlled by a low molecular weight, polar compound (or compounds) released from the mother's accessory glands. The chemical identity of this agent is not yet known.  相似文献

Abstract. Volatiles from solitary-reared (solitarious) and crowd-reared (gregarious) adult male desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), were quantitatively and qualitatively different. In particular, solitarious males did not emit phenylacetonitrile, a key component of the aggregation pheromone produced by gregarious adult males. In laboratory bioassays, solitarious and gregarious adults of both sexes responded similarly to the natural aggregation pheromone blend, the major pheromone component phenylacetonitrile, and a synthetic pheromone blend comprising benzaldehyde, guaiacol, phenylacetonitrile and phenol.EAG measurements showed significant differences in the responsiveness of adults of the two phases to the four synthetic components at high doses; however, the general response patterns were similar. These results suggest that the gregarious adult male aggregation pheromone may play a role in the arrestment and subsequent recruitment of solitarious individuals into gregarious or gregarizing groups during the early stages of a locust outbreak.  相似文献

The fine structure and distribution of various types of antennal sensilla in three nymphal stages and in adults of both solitary-reared (solitary) and crowd-reared (gregarious) phases of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Four types of sensilla were identified: sensilla basiconica, s. trichodea, s. coeloconica and s. chaetica. S. basiconica contain up to 50 sensory neurons, each of which displays massive dendritic branching. The sensillar wall is penetrated by a large number of pores. In contrast, s. trichodea contain one to three sensory neurons that branch to give five or six dendrites in the sensillar lumen; the sensillum wall is penetrated by relatively few pores. The s. coeloconica are situated in spherical cuticular pits on the antennal surface. The s. coeloconica are of two types: one type contains one to three sensory neurons with double sensillar walls penetrated by slit-like pores, whereas the second type contains four sensory neurons with non-porous double sensillar walls. The s. chaetica have a flexible socket and a thick non-porous sensillum wall and contain four sensory neurons that send unbranched dendrites to a terminal pore. A fifth sensory neuron of the s. chaetica terminates in a tubular body at the base of the hair. S. basiconica and coeloconica are normally distributed over the entire antennal flagellum, with a concentration in the middle segments; s. trichodea have three areas of concentration on the 5th, 10th and 14th flagellar segments. Sensilla chaetica are most abundant on the terminal segment. Locusts raised in solitary conditions have more olfactory sensilla (s. basiconica and s. coeloconica) than crowd-reared locusts. The difference in sensillar numbers is more evident in adults than in nymphs. These results suggest that differences in the odour-mediated behaviour of nymphs and adults, and between the phases of S. gregaria, may be attributable to differences at the sensory input level.  相似文献

Abstract:  The effect of Nosema locustae infection on the aggregation behaviour of the oriental migratory locust, Locusta migratoria manilensis , was studied using a two-choice arena olfactometer and electroantennography (EAG). Infected locusts had low antennal sensitivity and aggregation responses to faecal extracts and to locust body volatiles. Infected fifth instar nymphs had significantly lower aggregation index than the uninfected nymphs, although with fourth instars the effect on aggregation behaviour only occurred in infected females. With regard to antennal receptor sensitivity, infected adult locusts had significantly lower EAG amplitudes in response to extracts from faeces of the adult males. The effect was most pronounced in female locusts. In contrast, there was no significant difference in the EAG responses between the fifth instar male and female nymphs. Further analysis revealed that EAG responses of fifth instar nymphs and adults infected with N. locustae to the faecal extract and volatiles from fifth instar solitary-reared nymphs were not significantly affected. In contrast, infected nymphs and adults had remarkably low EAG amplitudes for the remaining stimuli.  相似文献

The effects of rearing density and maternal age on the progeny size, number and coloration of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, were investigated. Isolated-reared females deposited smaller, but more eggs than crowd-reared females. The former produced smaller and more eggs with age, whereas the latter showed a tendency to produce larger and fewer eggs over time. A similar tendency was also observed with virgin females, indicating that mating or the presence of males was not important. The first egg pod produced by each mated crowd-reared female contained significantly smaller and more eggs than did the subsequent egg pods. The former often produced many green hatchlings (0-100%) characteristic of solitarious forms, whereas the egg pods deposited after the first pod produced predominantly black hatchlings typical of gregarious forms. Adults were highly sensitive to a shift in rearing density and quickly modified the quality and quantity of their progeny depending on the density encountered. The number of eggs per pod was influenced not only by the mother's rearing density but also by rearing density of the grandmother. The present results demonstrated that the characteristics of progeny are influenced not only by the crowding conditions experienced by the mother and grandmother but also by the mother's reproductive cycle.  相似文献

The mechanism controlling the body color of hatchlings was studied for the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria. A pheromonal factor secreted by gregarious female adults into the foam plugs of egg pods has been suggested to cause darkening in their progeny. We re-examined the role of this maternal factor by washing or separating eggs at deposition. Eggs produced by crowd-reared female adults were washed with saline or separated individually without being washed immediately after deposition and the body color of the hatchlings from them was compared with that from the eggs unwashed and kept in the egg pod until hatching. Most hatchlings were dark and no significant difference was found in the proportions of dark- and light-colored hatchlings between the treatments and controls. Likewise, eggs separated before the foam plug deposition produced dark-colored hatchlings as in the un-separated controls. These results demonstrated that neither washing nor separation of eggs at deposition affected the hatchling body coloration. The variation in hatchling body color was correlated closely to the body weight at hatching, indicating that hatchling body color had been determined maternally. Green hatchlings reared under crowded conditions remained green until the second stadium at which black patterns were induced. It was concluded that body color at hatching has been determined maternally and crowding during the first nymphal stadium influences nymphal body color but its effect is not manifested until the second stadium. The present study casts doubts on the presence of a recently suggested pheromonal factor on the color of the hatchlings.  相似文献

Settling and take-off behaviour of Sitobion avenae was studied in the laboratory using infested and uninfested wheat at a range of developmental stages. Of the later developmental stages of wheat alate S. avenae preferred to settle on and gave birth to relatively more offspring on flowering and watery-ripe plants. The time to take-off of alatae which matured on wheat was influenced by both the developmental stage of their host plant and the degree of crowding they experienced. All alatae flew but those isolated on flowering plants stayed longer than those crowded or isolated on any of the other developmental stages tested. Similarly the number of offspring produced before take-off was inversely related to the degree of crowding and positively to the time spent on a plant before take-off.  相似文献

Observations are reported from 7 years of breedingM. arctoides in a small caged colony. From a stock of two males and six females 18 offspring have been born and 17 reared despite leaving young with the mother for approximately 2 years and restricted access between sexes. Overt menstrual bleeding is inconspicuous and external signs of oestrus are minimal. Colour change and slight swelling indicate the cycling condition, not the stage of the oestrous cycle. Mean length of cycles was 29.4 days. Copulatory ties have been observed on 15 occasions. Pregnancies lasted 168–183 days. The mean of five exactly timed pregnancies was 178 days. Pregnant animals became lethargic during the last two months of gestation. Nipple enlargement occurred during some pregnancies and females sucked and manipulated their nipples expressing milk. This was also seen in two non-pregnant females caged beside nursing mothers. All 17 successful births occurred at night. Caging mother, latest offspring, and previous offspring together proved successful. Mothers tolerated quite extensive investigation of the newborn by her previous baby, and the interactions that develop subsequently. Older female siblings frequently direct components of maternal behaviour to their younger sibling. Males showed marked interest in young in neighbouring cages, giving the soft “grunt-purr” typically shown to white furred young by adults other than the mother. The age of menarche of females born in the laboratory has steadily decreased through the period of captivity. Sexual behaviour is first seen long before puberty in both sexes, some aspects of its development are described. Two sub-adult males appeared to have failed to develop mature sexual behaviour until it was found that their incompetence was a reversible effect of the presence of an adult male.  相似文献

Locusts demonstrate remarkable phenotypic plasticity driven by changes in population density. This density dependent phase polyphenism is associated with many physiological, behavioral, and morphological changes, including observations that cryptic solitarious (solitary-reared) individuals start to fly at dusk, whereas gregarious (crowd-reared) individuals are day-active. We have recorded for 24-36 h, from an identified visual output neuron, the descending contralateral movement detector (DCMD) of Schistocerca gregaria in solitarious and gregarious animals. DCMD signals impending collision and participates in flight avoidance maneuvers. The strength of DCMD's response to looming stimuli, characterized by the number of evoked spikes and peak firing rate, varies approximately sinusoidally with a period close to 24 h under constant light in solitarious locusts. In gregarious individuals the 24-h pattern is more complex, being modified by secondary ultradian rhythms. DCMD's strongest responses occur around expected dusk in solitarious locusts but up to 6 h earlier in gregarious locusts, matching the times of day at which locusts of each type are most active. We thus demonstrate a neuronal correlate of a temporal shift in behavior that is observed in gregarious locusts. Our ability to alter the nature of a circadian rhythm by manipulating the rearing density of locusts under identical light-dark cycles may provide important tools to investigate further the mechanisms underlying diurnal rhythmicity.  相似文献

Several studies show that primates exhibit coping strategies to buffer the effect of increased social tension under crowded conditions. This is the first study to assess the effect of crowding on the social behavior of a cooperative breeding primate. We studied the effect of repeated short-term crowding on the social behavior of 20 cotton-top tamarins (10 breeders, 10 adult–subadult offspring) belonging to 2 large and 3 small groups. We compared scratching and rates of social behavior between 2 conditions: large-outdoor (42.0 m2 × 3.3 m) and small-indoor (3.5 m2 × 2.2 m) enclosures. Our results indicate that scratching increases in breeders and offspring during crowding. However, whereas the social behavior of breeders in small groups was not affected by crowding, breeders in large groups (n = 4) showed increased rates of severe aggression with their offspring during crowding. Offspring of large groups showed a nonsignificant trend to increase mild aggression, and an increased percentage of time in contact and grooming during crowding. This augmentation of grooming occurred in offspring–breeder dyads and also between offspring. These results suggest that helpers from large groups use coping strategies when social tension increases.  相似文献

In birds, different types of predators may target adults or offspring differentially and at different times of the reproductive cycle. Hence they may also differentially influence incubation behaviour and thus embryonic development and offspring phenotype. This is poorly understood, and we therefore performed a study to assess the effects of the presence of either a nest predator or a predator targeting adults and offspring after fledging on female incubation behaviour in great tits (Parus major), and the subsequent effects on offspring morphological traits. We manipulated perceived predation risk during incubation using taxidermic models of two predators: the short-tailed weasel posing a risk to incubating females and nestlings, and the sparrowhawk posing a risk to adults and offspring after fledging. To disentangle treatment effects induced during incubation from potential carry-over effects of parental behaviour after hatching, we cross-fostered whole broods from manipulated nests with broods from unmanipulated nests. Both predator treatments lead to a reduced on- and off-bout frequency, to a slower decline in on-bout temperature as incubation advanced and showed a negative effect on nestling body mass gain. At the current state of knowledge on predator-induced variation in incubation patterns alternative hypotheses are feasible, and the findings of this study will be useful for guiding future research.  相似文献

Infanticide, the killing of conspecific young, is commonly recognized as an adaptive behavioural strategy enhancing the fitness of the perpetrator. Infanticide is supposed to be inhibited in several male rodent species after mating with a time lag to the time when perpetrators own offspring would be born. This is because males with no parental care do not recognize their own offspring. It has been suggested that copulation alone is enough to inhibit infanticidal behaviour in male rodents. Infanticidal behaviour occurs in more than 50% of male bank voles (Myodes glareolus), and offspring loss because of infanticide may have a great effect on breeding success and population recruitment. In a laboratory experiment, we studied whether infanticidal male bank voles after successful mating stop the killing of pups. Infanticidal males were paired with a female until successful copulation. After the young were born, the males’ infanticidal behaviour was studied from the time of expected birth of own pups until their post‐weaning age. We predicted that mated infanticidal males are inhibited from committing infanticide especially during the time period when pups are less than 10 d old. Against our prediction, 67% of the infanticidal males continued the killing of pups in the age of 3 d. Infanticidal behaviour remained stable, and half of the males were infanticidal still at the age of weaning of pups. Our results are contradictory to previous studies, as we observed no inhibition of infanticide during early life of pups nor increase in infanticide again when their own offspring would have reached the ‘safe’ age and size after weaning. We suggest that mating alone is not sufficient to inhibit infanticide. Thus, we suggest that other cues of the female with whom the male mated with or on her territory are needed for inhibition to occur.  相似文献

An HPLC analysis of hemolymph extracts was undertaken to uncover differences between desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, reared under either crowded or isolated conditions. Some differences in the chromatographic pattern could be detected. One of the major peaks in the hemolymph of crowd-reared adults was found to be a minor one in isolated-reared individuals, whereas other peaks increased after solitarization. The differences became even more pronounced after several generations of isolated rearing. The dominant chromatographic peak in hemolymph extracts of the crowd-reared animals was identified as a novel peptide with a molecular mass of 6080Da. Edman degradation in combination with enzymatic fragmentation and quadrupole-time of flight (Q-Tof) mass spectrometry revealed the full sequence: DNADEDTICVAADNKFYLYANSLKLYTCYNQLPKVYVVKPKSQCRSSLSDCPTS. This 54 aa-peptide is very abundant in hemolymph of crowd-reared adults. Its concentration in hemolymph amounts to 0.1mM. To uncover the function, its effects were investigated in several bioassays, so far without positive results. One of the other peaks differentially expressed in the individuals of the two phases was identified as SGPI-2 (MW=3794Da), which is a serine protease inhibitor in locusts.  相似文献

The behaviour of five broods of radio-tagged Spanish Imperial Eagles Aquila heliaca adalberti was studied in Doñana National Park, Spain during the post-fledging period. The distance between perching sites and nest, the mean flight duration and distance, the percentage of time spent flying and the home range all increased exponentially with age. As the young got older, the parents spent less time in their vicinity. Young were not seen hunting, but depended on their parents for food. They begged and chased their parents throughout the post-fledging period, with higher intensity at the end. Nevertheless, the adults became progressively more reluctant to feed them, as reflected in the decrease in feeding frequency and in the number of approaching flights towards the young. At the end of the post-fledging period, adults often performed aerial displays and frequently chased their offspring. The age of independence of the different young studied varied between 123 and 145 days. The correlations between individual independence and the dates when the young were last fed by their parents, and when the highest intensity of parental aggressive behaviour occurred, were higher than correlations with the variables related to the maturation of flying. Therefore, it is suggested that parental 'meanness' and aggressive behaviour may be the factors determining the date of juvenile independence and dispersal from the home territory.  相似文献
