Plants have been grown in soils and nutrient solutions containingdifferent Ca/Sr ratios to find out whether there is any biologicaldiscrimination between calcium and strontium. When tomato plants are grown in nutrient solutions containingmolar Ca/Sr ratios from 2/1 to 4,000/1, the shoots do not distinguishbetween the elements, but the roots absorb strontium preferentiallyat low concentrations of this element. Since ion exchange resins show the same phenomenon, though toa less marked extent, this is believed to be a physico-chemicalrather than a biological effect. No chemical reagent has been found which can extract calciumand strontium from soils in the same ratio as plants. Ammoniumacetate extraction may give misleading results for the plant-availableCa/Sr ratios in the soil. Data for the Ca/Sr ratios in barleyand lucerne grown on soils containing ratios from 3/1 to 650/1emphasize this point.  相似文献

A system is described for growing plants in flowing solutionin which the concentration (activity) of some nutrient ionsis continuously monitored and held almost constant by meansof ion-selective electrodes which control the operation of nutrientpumps. By recording the concentration of a given ion in theflowing nutrient solution and the amount of that ion which isdelivered by the nutrient pumps, it is possible to follow nutrientuptake over long and short periods. A brief account is givenof the operation of the system using a nitrate ion-selectiveelectrode to examine aspects of uptake by perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.).  相似文献

Transport of K(+) by K(+)-depleted cells of marine pseudomonad B-16 (ATCC 19855) exhibited saturation kinetics. Rb(+) inhibited both K(+) transport and the K(+)-dependent transport of alpha-aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) into K(+)-depleted cells of the organism in proportion to the concentration of Rb(+) in the suspending medium. Inhibition of the K(+)-dependent uptake of AIB into K(+)-depleted cells by Rb(+) could be overcome by increasing the concentration of K(+) in the medium. When AIB and K(+) were added simultaneously to a suspension of K(+)-depleted cells, the uptake of K(+) occurred immediately and rapidly, whereas the accumulation of AIB occurred only after a lag. The initial uptake rate of AIB was directly proportional to the intracellular K(+) concentration. The intracellular concentration of K(+) and AIB at their steady-state levels increased to a maximum as the Na(+) concentration in the suspending medium was increased. At Na(+) concentrations between 0.2 and 0.3 M, the molar ratio of K(+) to AIB at their intracellular steady-state concentrations was constant at 1.6. At external Na(+) concentrations less than 0.2 M, the cells maintained a relatively higher K(+) intracellular steady-state level than AIB.  相似文献

The presence of previously absorbed K in plants caused a marked reduction in the short term influx of 86Rb-labeled K into roots of barley seedlings. The influx values agreed with net K absorption rates into intact plants, thus suggesting that K efflux was negligible in comparison with influx.  相似文献

Two varieties (Nihonbare and Koshihikari) of rice plants (Oryzasativa L.) were grown hydro-ponically with two levels (20 and100 mg N liter –1) of ammonia. Variations in levels ofnatural abundance of 15N (15N) were analyzed in the ammoniaand organic nitrogen of shoots and roots, as well as in theammonia in the culture solution. There was substantial fractionationof nitrogen isotopes during the uptake of ammonia. When plantsabsorbed a large proportion of ammonia from a solution witha low concentration, less negative 15N values in plants andhigh positive 15N values in the ammonia remaining in solutionwere observed. The reverse was found when a smaller fractionof ammonia was absorbed from a solution with a higher concentrationof ammonia. The l5N values of ammonia in shoots and roots werehigher than in the respective constituent organic nitrogen,suggesting the fractionation of nitrogen isotopes during theassimilation of ammonia. Wild-type and mutant cells of the cyanobacterium(blue-green alga) Synechococcus PCC 7942 were grown in nitrate-or ammonia-containing medium as the source of nitrogen. Fractionationof nitrogen isotopes during the uptake of nitrate was limited,whereas that during the uptake of ammonia was considerable. 1 In this report, the term ammonia refers indiscriminately toboth NH3 or NH4+. Increasing concentrations of K (20, 200, 2000 μm) in the nutrient solution depressed Ca content and concentration in barley plants growing in nutrient solutions of low Ca concentrations (250 and 2500 μm). Increasing K from 20 to 200 μm depressed Ca absorption more than increasing K from 200 to 2000 μm K.  相似文献

Multiphasic kinetics were indicated for uptake of ammonium and potassium by intact cirtrus seedlings as measured by a continuous flow technique. Uptake at low concentration, below 10?3M, was biphasis. The patterns for ammonium uptake by 60-day-old and 180-day-old seedlings were similar, but the rates of uptake per g dry weight of root were greater for the younger plants.  相似文献

The potassium and nitrate uptake rhythms in Lemna gibba G3 werecompared under various light and medium conditions. Under lightintensities ranging from 500 to 4,200 lux, the amplitudes ofboth rhythms were nearly the same, although the nitrate uptakeactivity contained a considerable arrhythmic component. Thenitrate uptake rhythm was not affected by lowering of potassiumconcentration or substituting potassium with other cations.The potassium uptake rhythm persisted in the absence of nitratewith a reduced amplitude and an advanced phase. Duckweeds culturedon molybdenum-free medium showed the potassium uptake rhythmbut no nitrate uptake rhythm; those cultured on nitrate-freemedium also showed a potassium uptake rhythm. These resultssuggest that the potassium and the nitrate uptakes in the duckweedare not linked together by a common ion permeating system inthe cell membrane, but are separately controlled by the oscillator. The water uptake by individual water-culture-grown castor-oilplants (Ricinus communis) was varied and corresponding ratesof potassium uptake measured. The water flux was varied by changingthe rate of transpiration or by detopping the transpiring plants.Transpiration was altered by changing the atmospheric humidityat constant temperature and light intensity in a climatologicalwind tunnel. It was found that the uptake of potassium was divisibleinto two components: (a) an accumulation by the cells of theroot and (b) a passage through the root to the shoot via thevessels. These components were found to be entirely independentof one another. Also while (a) was unaffected by the water flux(b) was linearly related to it. The concentration of potassiumin the vessels was between 15 and 26 times that of the mediumand this ratio which was found to be similar in both intactand detopped exuding plants remained constant in the face ofwide changes in water flux. This essential similarity betweenexuding and transpiring plants and the finding that there wasa lag between the change in water flux and the response in potassiumuptake indicated that there is no continuous mass-flow pathwaybetween medium and xylem in these plants. Instead, increasedtranspiration seems in some way to increase the rate of theexudation process. These conclusions are discussed in relationto the results of other workers.  相似文献

Silica dissolves in water to a small extent and below pH7 existsin solution essentially in a non-polar form. In this respectit contrasts with nutrient cations and anions and a study ofits uptake by plants was thought to be of interest. It was foundthat in common with the absorption of ionized solutes the entryof silica into plants appears to require the expenditure ofmetabolic energy since the process is sensitive to both metabolicinhibitors and variations in temperature. Furthermore, exceptunder conditions of very low humidity, silica enters barleyplants at a relatively greater rate than the water lost in transpiration,and its concentration in the xylem sap of bean plants may begreater than that in the external solution.  相似文献

The uptake and translocation of 14C-benthiocarb labelled at benzyl methylene by rice plant, bamyardgrass, wild amaranth, smart weed and lambsquarters were investigated, 14C-Benthiocarb was absorbed through the roots and the radioactivity was translocated into whole plants. The rate of absorption and translocation varied by the kind of plants. The translocation was occurred not only from roots into leaves, but from a leaf into other leaves, and even into roots of some kinds of plant. The absorption and translocation was more easy in barnyard-grass than in rice plant. Benthiocarb was rapidly absorbed by seeds and accumulated mostly in the embryo. The uptake of benthiocarb by seedlings decreased with the order of mesocotyl (bamyardgrass only), coleoptyl, root and leaf. Benthiocarb was degraded rapidly in plants.  相似文献

In a solution culture experiment with 4-week-old barley plants (variety Villa) the influence of NaCl salinization and of KCl additions on the uptake and turnover of labelled N (15NH415NO3) was studied. Labelled N was applied for 24 h at the end of the growth period. Salinization impaired growth and uptake of labelled N. The incorporation of labelled N into the protein fraction, however, was improved by NaCl salinization. Additions of KCl to the nutrient solution diminished the negative effect of NaCl salinization on growth. At both NaCl salinization levels (60 and 120 mM) K additions favoured the uptake of labelled N and particularly its incorporation into the protein fraction. It is suggested that the negative influence of the NaCl stress is not primarily due to an impaired protein synthesis, but is possibly caused by a deterimental effect of Na on other metabolic processes.  相似文献

The sorption of ferric iron, copper, zinc and manganese by wheatseedling roots and by discs of cellulose filter paper was measured.The magnitude of sorption at pH 5-0 was Fe(III) > Cu(II)> Zn(II) > Mn(II). Sorption of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Mn(II)increased with increasing pH whilst sorption of Fe(III) decreased.The patterns of sorption are discussed in the light of our knowledgeof the hydrolysis of the metal ions. It is suggested that metalsadsorbed on root surfaces may be remobilized by organic ligandswhich leak from the root cells. Where an external liquid diffusionpath away from the root does not exist, soluble metal ligandcomplexes might accumulate in the water free space and superficialwater film of the root, thus facilitating their uptake intoroot cells and translocation within the plant. Under such conditionsthe amounts of metal translocated to the shoots of wheat seedlingsare shown to be related to the amounts of metal adsorbed bytheir roots. The kinetics of uptake of K+ and Mg2+ were studied by using intact soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Amsoy] roots. Uptake of K+ in the concentration range 1.29 × 10?5 to 1.82 × 10?3 M can be represented by two phases of a single, multiphasic mechanism. Similarly, uptake of Mg2+ in the concentration range 4.10 × 10?6 to 2.49 × 10?4M was biphasic.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to define the relationship between the concentration of PAHs in sewage sludge at a particular location and their amount in various plant materials growing on it. The credibility of the results is enhanced by the fact that sewage sludge from two separate sewage-treatment plants were selected for their influence on the content of PAHs in three plant species growing on them. The investigations were carried out for a period of three years. The results demonstrated unequivocally that the uptake of PAHs by a plant depended on polyaromatic hydrocarbon concentration in the sewage sludge. The correlation between accumulation coefficient of PAH in a plant and the content of the same PAH in the sewage sludge had for three-, four- and five-ring hydrocarbons an exponential character and for six-ring hydrocarbons was of a linear character. The accumulation coefficients calculated for three-ring aromatics were several times higher than for four-ring PAHs; further the coefficient values calculated for five-ring PAHs were several times lower than for four-ring hydrocarbons. Finally, the accumulation coefficient values of six-ring PAHs were the lowest in the series of studied polyaromatic hydrocarbons.  相似文献
