Overwintering of Microcystis aeruginosa Kutz. in a shallow lake   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The standing crop and photosynthetic activity of Microcystisaeruginosa Kütz. in both the plankton and sediment wereinvestigated from November 1979 to May 1982 in Lake Kasumigaura,Japan. The number of planktonic colonies of this species decreasedfrom early autumn to early spring, but increased in the sedimentduring late summer and autumn. The overwintering colonies inthe sediment were –100–1000 times greater per unitarea than those in lake water. No photoinhibition of photosynthesiscould be observed in overwintering Microcystis. The values ofthe initial slopes of photosynthesis-light (P-I) curves weresimilar to those of the summer population, although the maximumphotosynthetic rate (Pmax) measured at 20°C was lower thanthat of the summer planktonic population. In winter the valuesof initial slope of the P-I curve, and the ratio of phycobilinto chlorophyll a sorted from sediment were higher than in coloniesfrom the plankton.  相似文献

The sedimentary flux of phytoplankton was measured using sedimenttraps in a shallow hypertrophic lake (Lake Kasumigaura), whereMicrocystis bloomed, from June to November 1983 The sedimenttraps were set at 0.5, 1.5 and 3.0 m depth in Takahamairi Bay(3.5 m depth). Microcystis spp. (including M.aerugmosa and M.viridis)in the traps were rare until early August, but increased thereafter.Sinking rates of Microcystis were 0.0045, 0.020 and 0.24 m day–1in June–August, September and October respectively, whichwere far lower than those of Melosira (0.2–1.7 m day–1)and Syncdra (0.2–1.0 m day–1). The total sedimentaryfluxes of POC and that of algal carbon during the study periodwere 283.2 and 96.7 gC m–2 which were 59.5% and 20.3%of the gross primary production (475.8 gC m–2) respectively.The sedimentary flux of living algae measured by algal countswas large in June but small in August and September. On theother hand, the flux of detritus obtained by subtracting totalalgal carbon from POC was small in June and July but large inAugust and September. Therefore diatoms, which appeared mostlyin June, tended to sink as live algae, while Microcystis sankas detritus after being decomposed or consumed in the waterIt was concluded from the results of carbon budget calculationsand the respiration rate of the 1- to 20-µm fraction thatthe activity of decomposers or consumers increased greatly inthe short period at the end of the bloom of Microcystis.  相似文献

The validity of Connell's intermediate disturbance hypothesis in phytoplankton communities was tested on data from a hypertrophic, shallow lake, Hjarbæk Fjord, Denmark.The present data from Hjarbæk Fjord demonstrate the difficulties in distinguishing stress from disturbance in a phytoplankton community, and show that great changes in the phytoplankton community can take place within few days.A collapse of blue-green algae in late June 1986 caused remineralization of nutrients and resulted in a rapid increase of fast-growing small chlorococcal green algae and phytoplankton species diversity, without any external disturbances acting on the lake. External disturbances in the form of wind action and brackish water intrusion occurred several days after the onset of these events. Carbon depletion and pH 11.0 were severe stress factors on the phytoplankton community. They were induced by calm, warm weather, but eventually acted as a kind of disturbance to the normally well circulated lake.  相似文献

Hyperscums are crusted buoyant mats of densely packed cyanobacteria, often decimeters thick, that persist for periods of weeks to months at the same site. In Hartbeespoort Dam, a hypertrophic lake in South Africa, hyperscums of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa that cover more than a hectare and contain up to 2 tons of chlorophyll a typically form in winter and persist for 2–3 months. This paper reports on the environmental conditions that favour hyperscum formation.Reynolds & Walsby (1975) postulated that cyanobacterial bloom formation depended on the coincidence of three preconditions: a pre-existing population, a significant proportion of the organisms having positive buoyancy, and turbulent mixing that is too weak to overcome the tendency of the cells to float. This model of bloom formation is evaluated in the context of hyperscums, based on a case-study from Hartbeespoort Dam. We examine the occurrence of hyperscums and the dynamics of their formation and breakdown in relation to diurnal and seasonal changes in the wind regime and in relation to the population dynamics and buoyancy of Microcystis. We conclude that Reynolds and Walsby's preconditions are essential but not sufficient to explain hyperscum formation. The additional preconditions are prolonged low speed wind regime, suitable lake morphometry, large cyanobacterial standing crops, and high insolation. The rare co-occurrence of these conditions make hyperscums an uncommon phenomenon, but with increasing eutrophication worldwide the frequency and distribution of hyperscum occurrence are likely to increase.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. This paper examines the structural, physical and chemical characteristics of cyanobacterial hyperscums (floating scums of densely packed eyanobacteria. measuring decimetres in thickness, that are covered by a dry crust of photo-oxidized cells) from hypertrophic Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa. 2. The hyperscum community was a cyanobacterial-baclcrial association, in which the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa comprised 98% of the biovolumc, with cell concentrations exceeding 109 ml?1. 3. The buoyancy mechanism of M. aeruginosa and evaporation at the surface led to increasing compaction of the colonies with declining distance from the surface, and the formation of three distinct, but continuous layers: a 1–2 mm dry surface crust (water content: 14%, chlorophyll a concentration: 3 g l?1), a 5–10 mm compact layer just below the crust (77% water, 1 g l?1 chlorophyll a), and a less compact layer (96% water, 200–500 mg l?1 chlorophyll a) from about 1 cm depth to the bottom, comprising the bulk of the hyperscum. 4. The crust attenuated all the incident light and reduced free gas exchange. Beneath it continuously dark anaerobic, highly reduced conditions prevailed. As the hyperscum aged over 3 months in 1984, at 10 cm depth the pH gradually declined from 6.6 to 5.9, interstitial water ammonia-N concentrations increased from 0.45 to 119 mg l?1, soluble reactive phosphorus from 2.8 to 83.3 mg l?1, and dissolved organic carbon reached a maximum of 460 mg l?1. At any point in time these concentrations declined gradually with increasing depth within the hyperscum, and declined dramatically beneath the hyperscum. Similar patterns were recorded in another hyperscum in 1986. 5. The chemical and temperature depth profiles indicated that free water movement took place around and under the hyperscum, but within it water movement was restricted to diffusion. 6. Gas bubbles composed of 28% methane. 19% CO2, 53% N2, and traces of H2 trapped within the hyperscum, and the presence of volatile fatty acids in the interstitial water were indicative of anaerobic decomposition processes mediated by fermenting and methanogenic bacteria, and N:P ratios below 1.5 in the interstitial water suggested that nitrogen was lost as gas, possibly through denitrification. 7. We hypothesize that the major sites of decay of M. aeruginosa were the crust and the compact layer beneath it, while deeper within the hyperscum this cyanobacterium could survive prolonged periods of dark anaerobic conditions. Pore water dynamics in the sediment of a shallow and hypertrophic lake   总被引:1,自引:3,他引:1  
Seasonal variations in pore water with main stress on pH and phosphate were investigated in the sediment of the shallow and hypertrophic Lake Søbygaard, Denmark. The purpose was to evaluate factors affecting the internal phosphorus loading. Pore water was obtained by in situ incubation of ceramic cups, sampled anaerobicaly from a fixed position in the sediment. The method is evaluated. During summer, pH and phosphate concentrations increased in the upper 8–10 cm of the sediment. Increased pH was most pronounced in the upper 5 cm, where pH increased to between 9 and 10. This is believed to be caused by the photosynthetically elevated pH in the above lake water. Phosphate concentrations increased with depth, from 0–2 mg P 1–1 in the upper 5 cm to 3–6 mg P 1–1 in 6–10 cm depth. Average phosphate gradient in the upper 6–8 cm was 1.0 mg P 1–1 cm –1 in the summer decreasing to 0.2 mg P 1–1 cm t1 in the autumn/winter. In spite of low redox potential, Fe(II) was not present in the upper 20 cm. The seasonal variation in pore water phosphate is believed mainly to be due to the variations in pore water pH inducing a substitution of phosphate ions with hydroxyl ions on ironhydroxides during summer. A considerable sedimentation of organic bound phosphorus and decomposition in the sediment is also considered important. Phosphorus release from the sediment is facilitated by bio- and gas turbation and by the frequent occurrence of resuspension caused by windaction. Net release rate is highly variable during the season. The summer average is 40 mg P m–2 d–1.  相似文献

This paper reports on a two-year analysis of the wind climateand its effect on phytoplankton primary production in ashallow (mean depth = 1.9 m), hypertrophic South Africancoastal lake, Zeekoevlei. The lake is subject to continuousmixing of the euphotic zone (Z eu = 0.8 m), andcomplete mixing of the water column to the mean depth on adaily basis. Median annual wind speeds, prevailing fromeither the north or the south, were 6.4 m s–1. There wasan almost total absence of calms, measured as hourly meanwind speeds of <1 m s–1. Notwithstanding the highfrequency of mixing, the lake supports a dense population ofphytoplankton, dominated by Cyanophyte and Chlorophytespecies. Mean concentrations of chlorophyll-a were240 g l–1. The attenuation of photosyntheticallyavailable radiation, PAR, was high, with mean K dvalues of 6.4 m–1 and water transparencies of <0.5 m.Levels of primary productivity, determined using the lightand dark bottle oxygen method, were very high, comparable toor exceeding that of the most productive systems yet studied.Maximum volumetric productivity ranged from 525 to 1524 mg Cm–3 h–1, and was confined to the upper 0.5 m of thewater column. Daily areal productivity, P d,varied between 1.2 and 4.3 g C m–2 d–1, and that ofthe maximum chlorophyll-a specific photosynthetic rate,P B max, between 1.6 and 7.9 mg C (mgChl-a)–1 h–1. Primary production was limited bywater temperature and the attenuation of PAR. The highfrequency of wind-induced mixing resulted in regular mixingof the phytoplankton through the euphotic zone, and reducedthe overall importance of P max at a single layer inthe depth profile. Similarly, the regularity of mixing wasrecognized as a limitation of the incubation of bottle chainsto determine primary production levels.  相似文献

It is proposed that surface scums of densely packed planktoniccyanobacteria (blue-green algae) which exist for weeks to months,measure several decimeters in thickness and are covered by acrust of photo-oxidized cells, be called hyperscums. Hyperscumsof Microcystis aeruginosa formed during prolonged periods ofcalm weather in wind-protected sites in a hypertrophic lakesubject to low wind speeds (Hart beespoort Dam, South Africa).A hyperscum that extended over 1–2 hectares and persistedfor 103 days during winter 1983 was studied. Chlorophyll a concentrationsranged from 100 to 300 mg l–2 Microcystis cell concentrationsreached 1.76x109 cells ml–1 or 116 cm3l–1. The hyperscumenvironment was anoxic, aphotic, with a fluctuating temperatureregime and low pH values. The densely packed Microcystis cellssurvived these conditions for more than 2 months. This was shownby comparing the potential photosynthetic capacity of Microcystisfrom the hyperscum with that of Microcystis from the main basinof the lake. However, after 3 months the hyperscum algae losttheir photosynthetic capacity and decomposition processes prevailed.The hyperscum gradually shrank in size until a storm causedits complete disintegration.  相似文献

Data on some relevant environmental variables and phytoplankton species composition, collected from the hypertrophic shallow lake Albufera of Valencia (Spain) during 1980–88, were examined using Redundancy Analysis (RDA). The hydrological cycle of the lake is manipulated for rice cultivation in the area. Seasonality and the particular hydrological cycle of the lake were the principal factors influencing long-term phytoplankton dynamics. Annual or horizontal differences were less important than the seasonal factor. However, a trend of phosphate increase and underwater illumination decrease was observed between 1980 and 1988. These changes might be related to some species year-to-year variations, although in general interannual phytoplankton changes were scarce. Spatial phytoplankton differences were much smaller than physical and chemical differences, which were mainly related to loading and residence times at the different sampling zones. Shallowness, hypertrophy and the regular hydrological cycle of the Albufera for rice yield, seem to contribute to the maintenance of an almost stable and homogeneous algal community, mainly composed of filamentous cyanophytes. RDA analysis has proved to be an efficient method in yielding valuable information on phytoplankton-environment interactions and trends over a long series of data. It seems also a feasible technique to monitor the results of lake management and restoration in the future.  相似文献

A long-term phytoplankton study was carried out in the Albufera of Valencia, a shallow hypertrophic lake (surface area 21 km2, mean depth 1 m, total inorganic nitrogen load 155 g m-2 y-1, total inorganic phosphate load 15 g m-2 y-1) from 1980 to 1988. The lake functions as a reservoir for the surrounding rice cultivation. From 1940's to 1988, its phytoplankton assemblage has been altered from a mesotrophic to a hypertrophic character, as consequence of the increasing pollution. For 1980–88, annual variations in the phytoplankton were less pronounced than seasonal changes. The hypertrophic and morphometric features of the lake favoured the stability of the phytoplankton assemblage and chlorophyll a levels during the study period. Seasonal and horizontal distribution of the total phytoplankton abundance and biomass were highly influenced by the hydrological cycle of the lagoon. Compared with other shallow nutrient rich lakes, the Albufera of Valencia is similar to the shallow hypertrophic lakes of the Netherlands.  相似文献

Top-down control of phytoplankton by zooplankton is possible through reductions in density of zooplanktivorous fish. Little Mere is a shallow lake where the effects of sewage effluent caused such a reduction. This allowed the large-bodied cladoceran, Daphnia magna Straus, to develop huge populations, preventing potentially large algal crops from developing.Subsequent diversion of the effluent is anticipated to lead to recovery of the fish community, reduced numbers of large-bodied grazers, and increased phytoplankton biomass. Whether the aquatic plant community, present in Little Mere, is resilient to such changes may depend upon whether cyanophytes are favoured, or not.  相似文献

Release of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) from dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP), concentrated by reverse osmosis of water samples from Lough Neagh Northern Ireland, was measured in the presence of enzymes and cultures of lake water bacteria in a basal liquid medium adjusted to the pH of lake water (7.6). No hydrolysis of unfractionated DOP was observed in the presence of alkaline phosphatase but a combination of alkaline phosphatase and phosphodiesterase mineralized 14% of DOP in a 30 day incubation period at 15 °C. A similar amount of mineralization was attained by phytase. Phytase induced the same degree of mineralization in a range of DOP fractions varying from MW > 100 000 to c. 500. A mixed culture of lake water bacteria mineralized 12% of unfractionated DOP. Single cultures of lake water bacteria displayed low mineralizing activity (mean of 49 cultures = 5% DOP hydrolysed). Results indicate that DOP from Lough Neagh in the above molecular weight range is predominantly recalcitrant to bacterial mineralization under natural lake conditions.  相似文献

A restoration program for the control of cyanobacterial blooms and the re-establishment of submerged macrophytes was conducted in Meiliang Bay of Lake Taihu since 2003. The effect of this ecological projects on plankton community and water quality, and factors regulating phytoplankton community were investigated in 2005. In general, some improvements of water quality occurred in the ecological restoration region, especially in the region of restoring aquatic macrophytes, where we detected significant reduction of nutrients. However, it seems the abundance of phytoplankton cannot be effectively control by the present ecological engineering. The phytoplankton abundance was high in the target restoration zone. Results of CCA and correlation analysis indicate that the phytoplankton community was mainly controlled by physico-chemical factors. Cyanobacteria species were positively related with pH, temperature, TP and TSS, while negatively related with TN, TN/TP and conductivity. The most discriminant variable was TN/TP, which explained 15% of the total variance of phytoplankton. However, TN was more important for the fluctuation of TN/TP than TP. It suggested that TN may be the ultimate factor controlling the phytoplankton community in Lake Taihu. Variation partitioning analysis showed that the pure contribution of crustacean was low for the variation of phytoplankton, suggesting that top-down control by crustacean zooplankton was weak in Lake Taihu. In general, this study suggested the reduction of nutrient load should be more important than top-down control using zooplankton for the ecosystem restoration in Lake Taihu.  相似文献

During cyanobacterial blooms, processes influencing the population dynamics of blooming species remain partially unexplained. To provide new information, we performed a high-frequency monitoring – every 2 days at six sampling points – of a Microcystis aeruginosa population blooming in a shallow lake. At each sampling date, there was no spatial heterogeneity in the ITS genotypic composition of the population and in the proportion of potentially microcystin- producing (mcyB+) cells, whereas high variations were recorded in cell abundances. In contrast, when looking at the temporal evolution of these parameters, the ITS genotypic composition of the population and in a lesser extent the percentage of mcyB+ cells displayed high variations during the growth phase of the bloom, but not during the plateau phase or the subsequent decline. This suggests that during the development of the bloom, there was no directional selection leading to the dominance of a restricted number of genotypes and that a balancing selection process permitted the maintenance of a high genetic diversity in the Microcystis population. Finally, no relationship was found between these variations occurring in the Microcystis population and those recorded for several environmental parameters, suggesting that many factors and processes interacting together might be involved in these variations.  相似文献

The organic carbon cycle of a shallow, tundra lake (mean depth 1.45 m) was followed for 5 weeks of the open water period by examining CO2 fluxes through benthic respiration and anaerobic decomposition, photosynthesis of benthic and phytoplankton communities and gas exchange at the air-water interface. Total photosynthesis (as consumption of carbon dioxide) was 37.5 mmole C m–2 d–1, 83% of which was benthic and macrophytic. By direct measurement benthic respiration exceeded benthic photosynthesis by 6.6 mmole C m–2 d–1. The lake lost 1.4 × 106 moles C in two weeks after ice melted by degassing C02, and 6.8 mmole C m–2 d–1 (1.5 × 106 moles) during the remainder of the open water period; 2.2 mmole C m2 d–1 of this was release Of CO2 stored in the sediments by cryoconcentration the previous winter. Anaerobic microbial decomposition was only 4% of the benthic aerobic respiration rate of 38 mmole C m–2 d–1. An annual budget estimate for the lake indicated that 50% of the carbon was produced by the benthic community, 20% by phytoplankton, and 30% was allochthonous material. The relative contribution of allochthonous input was in accordance with measurement of the 15N of sedimented organic matter.  相似文献

Methane-derived carbon (MDC) can subsidize lake food webs. However, the trophic transfer of MDC to consumers within macrophyte vegetation is largely unknown. We investigated the seasonality of δ13C in larval chironomids within Nelumbo nucifera (Gaertn.) and Trapa natans var. Japonica (Nakai) vegetation in the shallow, eutrophic Lake Izunuma in Japan. Over the past several years, N. nucifera has rapidly expanded across more than 80% of the lake surface. Prior to the expansion of N. nucifera (2007–2008), a previous study reported extremely low larval δ13C levels with peak sediment methane concentrations in August or September. After the expansion of N. nucifera (2014–2015), we observed extreme hypoxia as low as or lower than 1 mg l?1 among the macrophyte coverage during June and August. During August and September, no larvae could be found among N. nucifera, and larvae in T. natans showed relatively high δ13C levels (>???40‰). In contrast, larvae were markedly 13C–depleted (down to ??60‰) during October and November. The renewed supply of oxygen to the lake bottom may stimulate MOB activity, leading to an increase in larval assimilation of MDC. Our results suggest that macrophyte vegetation can affect the seasonality of MDC transfer to benthic consumers under hypoxic conditions in summer.  相似文献

Physico-chemical environmental control of the growth rate ofan algal population, the pennate diatom Asterionella formasaHass., was investigated for a year in natural water. This speciesoccurred in vegetative form in the water column all the time,although its population density varied by five orders of magnitudefrom a maximum of 1.4?106 cells l–1 in February to a minimumof 0.8?101 cells l–1 in August. A mathematical model ofa combination of multiplicative and Liebig types suggested thatvegetative cells were severely limited in their growth rate,reaching almost 80% depression of the maximum rate between Decemberand February by low temperatures and nearly 50% depression inwarm seasons by light intensity. Nutrient limitations were onlyobserved in May, August and September, although they were notas great as by temperature and light intensity in the studylake. Population changing rates of A.formosa determined in thelake were low and agreed well with the estimated growth ratesduring winter, but those in summer were low and disagreed withthe estimated high growth rates. This suggests that populationchange of the species was highly dependent upon the specificgrowth rate in winter, but other factors became predominantin summer.  相似文献

The phylogenetic composition of a bacterial community from a hypertrophic freshwater lake in China was investigated by sequencing cloned 16S rRNA genes. Three hundred and thirty-six bacterial clones from four clone libraries in different months (March, May, July and September in 2004) were classified into 142 operational taxonomic units, most of which were affiliated with bacterial divisions commonly found in freshwater ecosystem, e.g. Alpha-, Beta-, Gamma- and Deltaproteobacteria, Bacteriodetes and Actinobacteria. The results showed that the composition of bacterial community in the July library was the most diverse one. Actinobacteria was the most significant lineage in Lake Taihu, with dominant numbers of operational taxonomic units in the May, July and September libraries. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that 53 sequences were grouped into six novel clusters which may represent specific populations indigenous to the environment. Coverage analyses indicated that the clone libraries could provide a fine inventory of bacterial diversity in the lake.  相似文献
