BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pseudovivipary is an asexual reproductive strategy. Leiothrix spiralis and L. vivipara (Eriocaulaceae) are pseudoviviparous and occur in rupestrian grasslands, a habitat that has a predominance of sandy and shallow soil, with low water retention. This study aims to investigate the seasonal variation effect of moisture availability on L. spiralis and L. vivipara pseudoviviparous reproduction, and to compare their life history attributes, on rupestrian grasslands in Southeastern Brazil. METHODS: A field study was conducted, including observations concerning pseudoviviparous reproduction and measurement of demographic variables in both L. spiralis and L. vivipara. Soil moisture measurements were also performed to study its effect on the pseudoviviparous reproduction of L. spiralis and L. vivipara. KEY RESULTS: Flower head and plantlet production in L. spiralis were highly correlated with soil moisture. All scapes split off in the drier period, indicating that this is a splitter ramet species. Plantlet mortality was positively correlated with scapes splitting off. The L. vivipara phenophases were not synchronized to the variation in soil moisture, since flower heads and plantlets were produced throughout the year. Moreover, the splitting off of scapes was not observed. In addition, plantlets were formed early, as soon as the flower heads appeared, and remained suspended. Therefore, this species was called 'canopy forming'. CONCLUSIONS: Seasonal timing of pseudoviviparous reproduction can be a vital component of the successful establishment of plantlets in L. spiralis, considering that in this species the plantlets are formed only after the flower head touches the ground. In contrast, in L. vivipara, the plantlets are formed early, without touching the ground. Moreover, L. spiralis is a splitter ramet species, while L. vivipara is a canopy-forming species. The pseudoviviparous canopy-forming strategy appears to be more advantageous than the splitter ramet strategy, because even under similar soil moisture conditions, the survival of L. vivipara plantlets was greater than that of L. spiralis.

Background and Aims

Versatility in the reproductive development of pseudoviviparous grasses in response to growth conditions is an intriguing reproduction strategy. To better understand this strategy, this study examined variation in flowering and pseudovivipary among populations, co-occurring clones within populations, and among tillers in individual clones of Poa bulbosa, a summer-dormant geophytic grass that reproduces sexually by seed, and asexually by basal tiller bulbs and bulbils formed in proliferated panicles.

Methods

Clones were collected from 17 populations across a rainfall gradient. Patterns of reproduction were monitored for 11 years in a common garden experiment and related to interannual differences in climatic conditions. Intraclonal variation in flowering and pseudovivipary was studied in a phytotron, under daylengths marginal for flowering induction.

Key Results

Clones showed large temporal variability in their reproductive behaviour. They flowered in some years but not in others, produced normal or proliferated panicles in different years, or became dormant without flowering. Proliferating clones did not show a distinct time sequence of flowering and proliferation across years. Populations differed in incidence of flowering and proliferation. The proportion of flowering clones increased with decreasing rainfall at the site of population origin, but no consistent relationship was found between flowering and precipitation in the common garden experiment across years. In contrast, flowering decreased at higher temperatures during early growth stages after bulb sprouting. Pulses of soil fertilization greatly increased the proportion of flowering clones and panicle production. High intraclonal tiller heterogeneity was observed, as shown by the divergent developmental fates of daughter plants arising from bulbs from the same parent clone and grown under similar conditions. Panicle proliferation was enhanced by non-inductive 8 h short days, while marginally inductive 12 h days promoted normal panicles.

Conclusions

Interannual variation in flowering and proliferation in P. bulbosa clones was attributed to differences in the onset of the rainy season, resulting in different daylength and temperature conditions during the early stages of growth, during which induction of flowering and dormancy occurs.

Arundo donax L. (Poaceae) is an aggressive invader in California’s riparian habitats. Field experiments were conducted to examine invader and site attributes important in early invasion. One hundred A. donax rhizomes were planted along five transects into each of three southern California riparian habitats. Pre-planting rhizome weight was recorded, along with site variables including percent bare ground, litter depth, PAR, soil moisture, soil temperature, incidence of herbivory, native canopy cover, and plant community richness and diversity. A. donax shoot emergence, survival time, and shoot height were recorded for approximately 10 months. The experiment was repeated over three years in different locations within each site. When years and sites were pooled to reveal large-scale patterns, A. donax performance was explained by rhizome weight, soil moisture, bare ground, soil temperature, and herbivory. When each site was considered singly, A. donax was positively correlated with different variables in each location. Species richness was correlated with A. donax performance in only one site. Our results indicate that A. donax establishment in riparian habitats is promoted by both vegetative reproduction and favorable abiotic environmental factors and relatively unaffected by the composition of the native community. The positive response of A. donax to disturbance (bare ground) and high resource availability (soil moisture), combined with a competitive perennial habit suggest that this species takes advantage of a competitive-ruderal life history. The ability of A. donax to respond to different conditions in each site combined with low genetic and phenotypic variation seen in other studies also suggests that a high degree of environmental tolerance contributes to invasion success.

This paper investigated the effects of grazing by Galerucella nipponensis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) on growth and seed production of its host plant Trapa japonica (Trapaceae). A water tank experiment demonstrated that the new rosette leaves grazed upon by the beetles had a shorter life span than those of ungrazed rosettes. In ponds, severely grazed T. japonica rosettes produced more new leaves than slightly grazed rosettes. The period of seed production was delayed in years when leaves were severely grazed during the flowering seasons. Grazing peaked in later growing seasons when rosettes produce seeds. The ratio of seed production in the latter half of the peak to that in the early half was higher under severe grazing conditions than slight or moderate grazing conditions. A higher density of seeds in ponds in the current year tended to produce more abundant rosettes in the following spring. These results suggest that the herbivory of G. nipponensis induces compensatory reproduction of T. japonica in a complicated manner.

Reproductive systems are recognized as having a profound influence on the extent and structure of genetic variation in plant populations. To investigate the spatiotemporal variation in the reproductive modes (sexual and vegetative reproduction) and population genetic structures of a monocarpic perennial herb, Cardiocrinum cordatum (liliaceae), we selected a variety of habitats (e.g. large forested area including primeval forest, small fragmented secondary forest, and so on) around Sapporo City, Japan. We conducted breeding experiments, monitored the fate and growth of marked individuals for 3 years, and also analyzed the spatiotemporal genetic variation of flowering plants within the populations using allozyme variation. Plants emasculated prior to anthesis produced mature fruits in all populations examined. However, seed production was significantly lower in the small fragmented populations, possibly because of the low availability of pollinators and subsequent pollen limitation. In these fragmented populations, the mature flowering plants tended to be more dependent on vegetative reproduction for their recruitment, because they can only produce flowers once in their lifetime. Genetic diversity using samples from mature flowering plants in each population was lower in the small fragmented populations than in the large populations. In addition, although genotypic compositions in the fragmented populations were more or less similar during the 3 years of the study, the dominant genotypes changed temporally and spatially every year in the large populations. The present study demonstrated that the reproductive features of C. cordatum can be altered in various environmental conditions, such as habitat fragmentation, and these changes considerably affected the population genetic structures and vice versa.

Costs of reproduction should depend on resource availability and on reproductive effort, which in turn may depend on traits influencing reproductive success. Therefore, variation in both habitat quality and reproductive traits should be considered when assessing reproductive costs. We investigated the effect of habitat quality and floral display on the costs of reproduction in the perennial herb Primula farinosa. In the study area, P. farinosa occurs in habitats that differ in water availability, which strongly influences plant performance. Furthermore, it displays a scape length dimorphism, with two distinct scape morphs differing in attractiveness to pollinators and reproductive success. To test the hypothesis that the cost of fruit production is higher in the long‐scaped than in the short‐scaped morph, and depends on water availability, we manipulated reproductive investment in eight P. farinosa populations along a gradient of soil moisture. Fruit set was higher in long‐scaped individuals, and prevention of fruit set increased flower production in the following year among long‐scaped, but not among short‐scaped plants. Furthermore, costs of fruit production were evident at low and high moisture levels but not at intermediate levels. The results demonstrate an association between a genetically determined difference in floral display and cost of reproduction, and suggest that costs of reproduction are non‐linearly related to water availability. They thus indicate links between the evolution of plant reproductive traits and plant life histories, and between habitat quality and optimal life history.

Summary Annual biomass increment and biomass partitioning to leaves, roots and reproduction, and biomass storage in the below-ground bulb was measured in plants of two species of the geophytic genus Bellevalia grown outdoors at three levels of soil moisture. The differences between the species were in accordance with the hypothesis that plants of more arid environments should rely more on internal reserves than plants of more productive environments. In Bellevalia desertorum, a shallow rooted species of the most arid habitats in the Central Negev, leaf and root development during outgrowth at the beginning of winter was rather variable, and followed soil moisture availability to a certain degree. A small portion of its biomass budget was committed to seed production, which varied little among the irrigation regimes. The rest of the biomass was stored in the bulb. The amount of biomass devoted annually to reproduction was mainly determined by the amount of reserves already present in the bulb. In contrast, in B. eigii, which grows in the more productive wadis with its bulb at a depth of 15 to 30 cm, leaf and root growth was not only determined by water availability, but also by initial bulb mass. This resulted in a greater potential relative growth rate than in B. desertorum, but also in a greater risk of accumulating less biomass than it spent in root and leaf construction under poor soil moisture conditions. In this species, reproductive biomass and seed yield were proportional to current biomass gain and, in contrast to B. desertorum, independent of initial bulb mass, provided that the bulb was large enough to initiate flowering.

Leiothrix curvifolia var. lanuginosa and Leiothrix crassifolia are endemic and sympatric species in the Brazilian rupestrian grasslands, a habitat that has a predominance of sandy and shallow soils with low water retention. Based on the premise that soil moisture is one of the abiotic factors that affects most reproduction in plants, we hypothesized that the flowering phenology events and establishment of sexual and vegetative offspring would occur in the periods of higher soil water availability. We marked 478 ramets distributed among 100 genets of L. curvifolia var. lanuginosa and 693 ramets distributed among 100 genets of L. crassifolia, so that they could be observed monthly along the two rainy seasons from December 2003 to 2004. Both species showed phenological synchrony in the flower heads and seedlings production with soil moisture availability. Seedling mortality was intense in the dry period. Unlike the seedlings, the ramets survived was 100%. The greater capacity of ramets to survive can result from a much greater biomass compared with seedlings, and ramets become adult much faster. We conclude that for a successful seedling establishment, the synchronization with the rainy season was required, and moreover, that repeated seedling recruitment can be important for the maintenance of local populations of these species which suffer from high seedling mortality in the drought period. It is likely that the coincidence of the rainy period with seedling establishment is an important factor that determines the flowering phenological pattern of L. curvifolia var. lanuginosa and L. crassifolia in rupestrian grasslands.

Bulbils are small aerial rosettes that occur on the flowering stalks of semelparous Agave plants and in related families, and that are capable of acting as clones of the parent plant. We hypothesized that bulbil formation was inversely related to fruiting success in the flowering stalk, and we explored this hypothesis in A. macroacantha, a species from South-Central Mexico. Forty randomly chosen plants were divided amongst three treatments: (a) elimination of all floral buds, (b) exclusion of pollinators, and (c) control. We also studied 22 plants in which the flowering stalk had been felled by goat grazing. Between September and November 1991 we kept a record of the numbers of bulbils and capsules produced in each flowering stalk. Significant (P<0.0001) differences between treatments were found in the proportion of plants hearing capsules and bearing bulbils. The control treatment had the highest proportion of plants producing capsules, treatment a had the highest proportion of individuals bearing bulbils, while treatment b showed an intermediate response. In the goat-grazed group, 45% of the plants failed to produce any propagative structure after the stalk was cut, and half of all plants produced bulbils on the remaining stump. A significant inverse relationship between the numbers of capsules and the numbers of bulbils per plant was found for the three randomly assigned treatments. Our results suggest that once the production of the flowering stalk has been triggered and the death of the rosette is irreversible, bulbils may act as an insurance mechanism that increases the probability of successful reproduction of the genet.

A culture experiment was conducted to examine the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on the growth and reproduction ofKummerowia striata, a common annual legume of river floodplains of Japan. The plants were grown from seeds in pots with nutrient-poor sandy soil collected from a fluvial bar. Arbuscular mycorrhizal infection increased the aboveground biomass, nodule weight, leaf nitrogen concentration and seed production. However, flowering occurred earlier in plants without AM fungi. These effects of AM fungi were insignificant in plants supplied with phosphate. These results suggest that AM fungi may influence the establishment ofK. striata in nutrient-poor, disturbed habitats.

Colonization dynamics of woody species into grasslands in Neotropical savannas are determined by two main factors: plant-available moisture and fire. Considering seasonality of precipitation and high fire frequency in these ecosystems, vegetative reproduction has been suggested as the main regeneration strategy in woody species. This study examined seasonal variations in water relations and photosynthesis in juveniles of two tree species with contrasting regeneration strategies: Palicourea rigida (sexual reproduction) and Casearia sylvestris (asexual reproduction). The studied species showed similar transpiration rates to deep-rooted adult evergreen tree species during the rainy period, suggesting little water availability limitations on surface soil layers. P. rigida juveniles significantly decreased their leaf water potentials from wet to dry seasons. In C. sylvestris resprouts, there were no seasonal differences in their predawn water potentials and gas exchange parameters, indicating a water deficit avoidance characteristic derived from their connections to deep-rooted adult counterparts allowing access to moist soil at depth even during the drought period. P. rigida rely on strict control of water losses and turgor maintenance through elastic cell walls during the dry season. The iso-hydric behavior of gas exchange and most water relations parameters in C. sylvestris enable turgor maintenance during the dry season which also gives the possibility to achieve foliar expansion under water-stressed conditions for shallow-rooted plants. Nevertheless, in absence of water deficits, P. rigida had the advantage to be physiologically independent individuals, showing an equal or even superior photosynthetic performance that eventually could be translated into a more favorable whole-plant carbon balance and higher growth rates in wet habitats.

To clarify the life history of Clintonia udensis, we investigated its reproductive systems and spatio‐temporal population structure. Pollination experiments and the observation of floral visitors revealed that C. udensis was compatible with both self‐ and outcross‐pollen, and it potentially produces seeds by insect‐mediated outcrossing in natural conditions. In addition, propagation by clonal reproduction from rhizomes was evident. In this study, it was clarified that C. udensis potentially propagates by sexual and asexual reproduction and maintains its population through a stable frequency of flowering. The differences in the dependence on each reproduction mode could be one of the contributing factors for creating a variety of population sizes and distribution patterns of ramets in populations.

Worldwide, parthenogenetic reproduction has evolved many times in the stick insects (Phasmatidae). Many parthenogenetic stick insects show the distribution pattern known as geographic parthenogenesis, in that they occupy habitats that are at higher altitude or latitude compared with their sexual relatives. Although it is often assumed that, in the short term, parthenogenetic populations will have a reproductive advantage over sexual populations; this is not necessarily the case. We present data on the distribution and evolutionary relationships of sexual and asexual populations of the New Zealand stick insect, Clitarchus hookeri. Males are common in the northern half of the species’ range but rare or absent elsewhere, and we found that most C. hookeri from putative‐parthenogenetic populations share a common ancestor. Female stick insects from bisexual populations of Clitarchus hookeri are capable of parthenogenetic reproduction, but those insects from putative‐parthenogenetic populations produced few offspring via sexual reproduction when males were available. We found similar fertility (hatching success) in mated and virgin females. Mated females produce equal numbers of male and female offspring, with most hatching about 9–16 weeks after laying. In contrast, most eggs from unmated females took longer to hatch (21–23 weeks), and most offspring were female. It appears that all C. hookeri females are capable of parthenogenetic reproduction, and thus could benefit from the numerical advantage this yields. Nevertheless, our phylogeographic evidence shows that the majority of all‐female populations over a wide geographic area originate from a single loss of sexual reproduction.

We examined costs of sexual reproduction and clonal propagation, and their consequences for resource allocation in the clonal stoloniferous herb, Potentilla anserina, a typical pioneer species in disturbed areas. We used heavy-metal treatment in soil to create unfavourable growing conditions, because costs of reproduction are more likely to be expressed when resources are limited. We also studied whether heavy metals affect the plasticity of clonal growth form that enables the plants to avoid poor growing conditions. Ramets collected from field were grown in a greenhouse under the heavy-metal treatment consisting of a control and two levels of heavy-metals added in soil. Clonal propagation was costly in terms of total biomass of flowering ramets. Also the costs of sexual reproduction were detected in flowering ramets. Contrary to our predictions, the costs of flower production were visible in the control but not in the heavy-metal contaminated plants. Only the flowering ramets were able to produce longer stolons under heavy-metal stress, but the stolon biomass was not affected by heavy metals. Results indicate that clonal propagation and sexual reproduction may be costly for P. anserina. However, the costs are modified by heavy-metal contamination.

Leucojum aestivum L. (Amaryllidaceae) is a polycarpic C-S-European/W-Asiatic geophyte. It is a threatened wetland species and is protected in several European countries, as a consequence of the destruction or alteration of its habitats across Europe and the harvesting of its bulbs for medical purposes (alkaloids). This paper deals with the taxonomic status, morphology, distribution, ecology and population biology of this species, with special emphasis on habitat requirements, reproductive biology, and seed germination. A detailed study in N-Italy found that L. aestivum grows on alluvial soils with high nitrogen levels. The mean size of the plants increased with the water content of the soil. Similarly, within the habitats, the water and nitrogen contents of the soil were higher in plots with L. aestivum than in those without the species. Seed set of the plants was not influenced by the size of a population, but strongly increased with the density of flowering plants. This was due to a decrease in the proportion of unfertilised eggs, indicating pollen limitation of reproduction in low-density populations. Germination tests revealed that the optimal germination temperature is between 20 °C and 25 °C.

Arnica montana, a characteristic plant of nutrient-poor grasslands, has strongly declined during the last decades, particularly at lower altitudes. To gain insights into the underlying reasons for this decline, we recorded differences in size, stage structure and reproductive traits between 21 colline populations of A. montana in the Ardennes-Eifel region (280–600 m a.s.l.) and 10 montane populations in the Vosges Mountains (1,200 m a.s.l.). Community composition of the Violion caninae vegetation at colline sites and Nardion strictae vegetation at montane sites indicated that temperature and moisture were the main abiotic factors differentiating between low and high altitudinal relevées. The proportion of flowering rosettes decreased with altitude, indicating a shift from sexual reproduction to clonal growth. In contrast to expectation, Ellenberg values for nutrient availability as well as the proportion of young rosettes and population size did not differ between colline and montane populations. However, population size decreased with nutrient availability, indicating eutrophication as the reason for population decline. In small populations, plant density, the proportion of flowering rosettes, the number of flowerheads per rosette and the number of seeds per flowerhead were lower, indicating less suitable conditions. Thus, preventing further eutrophication in both colline and montane populations will be crucial for the conservation of the species. Reduced reproduction may not be important for the population dynamics of this clonal plant in the short term, but could affect genetic diversity and survival in the long term.

Survivorship and fecundity of the polycarpic perennial Mentzelia nuda were investigated to help understand its population dynamics. Between 1978 and 1984, all 685 individuals found in a Nebraska sandhills prairie plot were marked and their fate followed. Three plants lived seven years, but the average lifespan was less than two years. Most plants spent their first year as nonflowering rosettes: only 9% flowered the first summer after germination. Overall, first-year survivorship ranged from 0.20 to 0.50 between 1978 and 1984. Fifty-two percent of rosettes survived to flower. Survivorship of flowering individuals was about the same as the survivorship of rosettes, although actual survivorships varied significantly between years. Both rainfall and age affected survivorship and fecundity.

Flowering phenology of tree rhododendron (Rhododendron arboreum Sm.) was monitored in situ along elevation gradients in two distinct ecological settings. Observations were carried out in Gaoligong Nature Reserve (GNR) in China and in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA) in Nepal. Using the crown density method, flowering events of the selected species were recorded. Flowering duration and synchrony were determined within each site and along the elevation gradient in each study area. Our observations showed high synchrony throughout the elevation gradient, especially for peak flowering. Mean 15-day soil temperature, soil parameters (soil moisture, nitrogen, organic matter and pH), age of the observed trees, and site characteristics (litter cover, canopy cover, inclination) were related to mean initial and peak flowering dates using partial least squares regression (PLS). Results differed between the two sites, but winter temperature was the most important variable affecting the regression model for both initial flowering and peak flowering at both sites. After temperature, soil moisture was the most important variable for explaining initial flowering dates. The distribution of tree rhododendron indicates that it is able to grow in a wide range of habitats with different environmental conditions. The recent trend of rising winter-spring temperature and the detected bloom-advancing effect of high temperatures during this period suggest that tree rhododendron might expand its distributional range in response to global warming.
