The larvae of the pine processionary moth (PPM), Thaumetopoea pityocampa, feed on the needles of pine and cedar. The urticating hairs of older instars pose a threat to human and animal health. Strains of the entomopathogenic fungi, Metarhizium brunneum (V275, ARSEF 4556) and Beauveria bassiana (KTU-24), were assayed against first to fourth instar T. pityocampa using doses ranging from 1?×?105 to 1?×?108 conidia mL?1. The three strains differed slightly in their virulence but caused 100% mortality of all instars at the highest dose. The newly emerged or first instar larvae were extremely susceptible with 100% mortality being achieved 2–4 days post inoculation with V275 at all but the lowest dose. The fourth instar larvae appeared to be less susceptible than earlier instars. There was good horizontal transmission of conidia from treated to un-inoculated larvae. However, mortality was higher in third and fourth instars and where the ratio of inoculated versus untreated larvae was high. This we presume is due to spores being more readily trapped by the urticating hairs found on third and older instar larvae. Injection of the nests offers a simple and environmentally friendly way of controlling the pest with reduced risk to operators.  相似文献

Diatom sediment records of large lakes can be used to decipher the history of ancient phytoplankton. The upper layer of the sediment is an important area of remineralization of the sedimenting phytoplankton biomass. It hosts a bacterial community different from those of both the water column and deeper sediment layers. In this work, we analyzed the structure and diversity of the communities of Bacteria and Archaea in the surface sediment core containing valves of diatoms, the major producers in Lake Baikal. Pyrosequencing of the bacterial V3–V4 region of the 16 S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and archaeal V1–V3 16 S rRNA gene regions yielded 29,168 and 36,997 reads, respectively. In total, we have identified 33 bacterial phyla; uncultured Actinobacteria were the most abundant in the upper layers, while lower sediment was dominated by Firmicutes and Alphaproteobacteria. The composition of the archaeal community changed with depth, but was generally dominated by Crenarchaeota from the classes Marine Group I and Miscellaneous Crenarchaeotic Group, as well as Euryarchaeota from the class Thermoplasmata. These dominant bacterial and archaeal taxa are presumed to participate in the destruction of buried organic matter, which eventually leads to degradation of the diatom valves.  相似文献

Theeffects of light competition and litter on seedling recruitment and theperformance of established individuals were examined in Violapalustris. This polycarpic perennial plant was a common component ofspecies-rich fen meadows in northwestern Germany until the middle of thiscentury, but today is considered to be regionally endangered. From summer 1996until summer 1998 a bi-factorial field experiment combining three standing croptreatments (mowing, thinning, control) with two litter layer treatments (litterremoval, no litter removal) was carried out in an abandoned fen meadow toinvestigate the effects of these factors both on V.palustris and on aboveground species composition and diversity.MANOVAs (multivariate analysis of variance) revealed significant treatmenteffects for the performance of V. palustris related toexperimental manipulation. Mowing increased vital attributes including thenumber of rosette leaves, the percentage of individuals with chasmogamous andcleistogamous flowers and the number of rhizomes. In contrast, the length of theleafstalk, mean leaf area and the length of rhizomes were negatively associatedwith mowing. Litter removal significantly increased the number of V.palustris seedlings. The removal of the litter layer already resultedin an increase in aboveground species richness in the first year of theexperiment. After three years of experimental manipulation, both abovegroundspecies richness and diversity were positively associated with mowing.Redundancy Analysis showed that typical wet meadow species (Cardaminepratensis, Lychnis flos-cuculi, Lotuspedunculatus) and species of mesotrophic fens (Violapalustris, Agrostis canina, Potentillapalustris) were positively influenced by mowing. It can be concludedthat V. palustris recruitment and growth is promoted by aregular disturbance regime on fen meadows. The conservation of many typicalspecies of wet meadows and fens in northwestern Germany depends on moderategrazing or cutting. These management types prevent successional changes whichlead to an increase in standing crop and the development of a litter layer, bothof which can cause local extinction.  相似文献

The Vibrios are a unique group of bacteria inhabiting a vast array of aquatic environments. Many Vibrio species are capable of infecting a wide assortment of hosts. Some of these species include V. parahaemolyticus, V. alginolyticus, V. vulnificus, V. anguillarum, and V. cholerae. The ability of these organisms to utilize iron is essential in establishing both an infection in their hosts as well as surviving in the environment. Bacteria are able to sequester iron through the secretion of low molecular weight iron chelators termed siderophores. The iron-siderophore complexes are bound by specific outer membrane receptors and are brought through both the outer and inner membranes of the cell. The energy needed to drive this active transport is achieved through the TonB energy transduction system. When first elucidated in E. coli, the TonB system was shown to be a three protein complex consisting of TonB, ExbB and ExbD. Most Vibrio species carry two TonB systems. The second TonB system includes a fourth protein; TtpC, which is essential for TonB2 mediated iron transport. Some Vibrio species have been shown to carry a third TonB system that also includes a TtpC protein.  相似文献

The wheat bug Eurygaster maura (Hemiptera: Scutelleridae) is a potential pest of wheat and barley in Iran and other countries. Two major digestive enzymes of this insect, α‐d ‐glucosidase and β‐d ‐glucosidase, have been investigated. The midgut has four distinct regions including the first ventriculus (V1), second ventriculus (V2), third ventriculus (V3) and fourth ventriculus (V4). The study showed that the first three regions of the wheat bug midgut were acidic (pH 5.5–6), the fourth region of the midgut and hindgut pH were slightly acidic (pH 6.5–6.9) and the salivary gland (labial gland) pH was determined to be somewhat acidic (pH 5–5.5). Enzyme assay showed that α‐ and β‐glucosidase activity is present in both midgut and salivary glands of adult E. maura. The specific activities of midgut α‐ and β‐glucosidase were 11.2 and 10.8 mU/mg protein, respectively. The specific activities of these enzymes in salivary glands were 3.06 and 2.73 mU/mg protein, respectively. Optimum temperature and pH values for glucosidases were determined to be 30–35°C and 5, respectively. Glucosidases of the midgut were more stable than salivary glucosidases at 35°C. Evaluating enzymatic kinetic parameters showed that glucosidases of the midgut had more affinity as well as more velocity than that of salivary glands.  相似文献

Analysis of the gut contents of Procladius bellus (Loew) larvae collected in field samples indicated that it was a detrivitore‐omnivore. The observed dietary change from first and second instars (detritivore‐herbivores) to third and fourth instars (omnivores) did not suggest a change in feeding behaviour from detritivore to predator, but rather that the animal material was consumed along with larger detrital material. Small detrital material (1–15 μm) was an important dietary component and detritus in general contributed 50–70% of the overall diet. Diatoms and green algae contributed 15–20%, while blue‐green algae contributed about 10%. Animal material contributed about 5% to second and third instar larvae and 20% to fourth instar larvae.  相似文献

Abstract. The deciduous Vaccinium myrtillus and the evergreen Vaccinium vitis‐idaea were subjected to five removal treatments of understorey layers: control, removal of the moss layer, removal of the field layer, removal of both moss and field layers and removal of moss, field and humus layers. A second factor, sowing, was included to investigate sexual reproduction after disturbance. Density of new ramets and seedlings and growth of annual shoots were studied for the first two growing seasons, whereas cover was measured for five growing seasons after disturbance treatment. Initially, vegetative production of new ramets and species cover increased rapidly in all disturbed plots, except for the most severe treatment, in which production of new ramets was virtually absent throughout the study. Full recovery following removal of the field layer only or both field and moss layers was reached after four years for V. myrtillus. V. vitis‐idaea recovered more quickly, after one year (removal of field layer only) and four years (removal of field and moss layers). The relative growth of V. myrtillus and V. vitis‐idaea increased in the latter treatment in terms of production of annual shoots and length of annual shoots, respectively. Seedling density increased after sowing in the most severe treatment. The results underscore the importance of vegetative growth for recovery of these species at moderate‐level disturbances. The high rate of sexual reproduction in the most severe treatment implies that strong mechanical disturbance is needed to enhance the establishment of new genotypes in these species.  相似文献

1. Ontogenetic shifts in predator behaviour can affect the assessment of food‐web structure and the development of predator–prey models. Therefore, it is important to establish if the functional response and interference interactions differ between life‐stages. These hypotheses were tested by (i) comparing the functional response of second, third, fourth and fifth larval instars of Rhyacophila dorsalis, using three stream tanks with one Rhyacophila larva per tank and one of 10 prey densities between 20 and 200 larvae of Chironomus sp.; (ii) using other experiments to assess interference within instars (two to five larvae of the same instar per tank), and between pairs of different instars (one, two or three larvae per instar; total predator densities of two, four or six larvae per tank). 2. The first hypothesis was supported. The number of prey eaten by each instar increased with prey density, the relationship being described by a type II model. The curvilinear response was stronger for fourth and fifth instars than for second and third instars. Mean handling time did not change significantly with prey density, and increased with decreasing instar number from 169 s for fifth instars to 200 s for second instars. Attack rate decreased progressively with decreasing instar number. Handling time varied considerably for each predator–prey encounter, but was normally distributed for each predator instar. Variations in attack rate and handling time were related to differences in activity between instars, fourth and fifth instars being more active and aggressive than second and third instars, and having a higher food intake. 3. The second hypothesis was partially supported. In the interference experiments between larvae of the same instar or different instars, mean handling time did not change significantly with increasing predator density, and attack rate did not change for second and third instars but decreased curvilinearly for fourth and fifth instars. Interference between some instars could not be studied because insufficient second instars were available at the same time as fourth and fifth instars, and most third instars were eaten by fourth and fifth instars in the experiments. Prey capture always decreased with decreasing attack rate. Therefore, interference reduced prey consumption in fourth and fifth instars, but not in second and third instars. The varying feeding responses of different instars should be taken into account when assessing their role in predator–prey relationships in the field.  相似文献

As a result of parasitism by Glyptapanteles liparidis in the first, second, third and fourth instar larvae of Acronicta rumicis, the mortality of each larval stage was found to be 46.67, 90, 71 and 16.67%, respectively. The mortality was highest when G. liparidis parasitized the second and third instar larvae. The difference in mortality between the parasitized group and the control group was 72.14% in the second instar larvae. With regards to the food consumption of the parasitized larvae, the first and second instar larvae consumed 6495.58 ± 646.52 mm2 (leaf surface) and 7951.12 ± 4167.36 mm2, respectively, while the third and fourth larvae consumed 13 826.77 ± 3396.66 mm2 and 18 599.85 mm2, respectively, showing that food consumption increased with instar stages of the host larvae. The clutch size of G. liparidis increased in relation to the instar stages of the host: it was 25.25 ± 7.89, 48.65 ± 53.75, 91.09 ± 44.52 and 114 individuals when they were fed with the first, second, third and the fourth instar larvae of the host, respectively.  相似文献

By use of plane and solid geometry and probability models, efficiencies of infection and competition for nutrients and infection sites by a nonpathogenic strain of Fusarium oxysporum (C14) with F. oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum on the rhizoplane of cucumber were calculated. The model is derived from previously published data. Efficiencies for successful infection were 0.04 chlamydospores per infection site for both pathogen and nonpathogen. Observed successful infections by the pathogen in competition with the nonpathogen were close in values to the competition ratio (CR) calculated as the number of chlamydospores on the infection court of the pathogen divided by the total number of both pathogen and nonpathogen at relatively low densities. When total chlamydospores were, on average, closer than 175 μm apart, however, competition for nutrients/mutual inhibition occurred. At such densities there was an overestimation of the effect of competition for infection sites. These relationships were modeled at inoculum densities of pathogen and/or nonpathogen of 5000 chlamydospores per g soil and above, however, in the field, maximum densities of 1000 colony forming units/g (cfu) were observed. Most likely models of competition for infection sites at this density of the pathogen revealed that infection efficiency was only approximately halved, even when 0.98 of the possible 30 infection sites were occupied by the nonpathogen. It is conclude that competition for nutrients and/or infection sites is an insignificant factor in biocontrol of Fusarium wilt diseases by nonpathogenic fusaria.  相似文献

The effects of ultraviolet-B radiation on regeneration after disturbance of a natural sub-arctic heathland have been investigated. Areas of pristine dwarf shrub heath were denuded of all above ground biomass in 1992 and exposed to enhanced UV-B (simulating a 15% depletion of the ozone layer). The resulting regenerated stem and leaf growth parameters were measured after four years on three dwarf shrubs, Vaccinium myrtillus, V. uliginosum and V. vitis-idaea and the grass Calamagrostis lapponica; leaves of the three dwarf shrubs were also analysed for UV-absorbing compounds and carbohydrates. Regeneration irrespective of treatment was slow, with Empetrum hermaphroditum failing to regenerate at all. Vaccinium myrtillus showed the most rapid regeneration attaining much of its original biomass in four years. There was a significant interaction between UV-B and year of regeneration in V. myrtillus; annual stem length increment showed an initial stimulation of 75% under enhanced UV-B in the first year of regeneration while a reduction of 16% was observed in the fourth year. Both V. uliginosum and V. vitis-idaea showed a reduction in annual stem length increment as regeneration progressed with a greater than 50% reduction in stem increment in the fourth year of regeneration compared to the first. Vaccinium uliginosum also showed an initial reduction in stem length increment of 40% under enhanced UV-B. None of the species were affected by enhanced UV-B in terms of total regenerated stem and leaf biomass or UV-absorbing compounds in regenerated leaf tissue. Total leaf carbohydrate and the ethanol/water soluble fraction in V. uliginosum were significantly increased by 29% and 31% respectively under enhanced UV-B. This suggests either a stimulation of photosynthesis or a reduction in sink size for photo-assimilates. Results are discussed in the context of the extremely slow regeneration of sub-arctic heath communities and the implications of contrasting UV-B effects on the regenerative ability of different species.  相似文献

采用改良后的CTAB法,对山葡萄、软枣猕猴桃、蒙古栎、核桃楸、西伯利亚红松和偃松基因组DNA进行提取。结果表明,所提基因组DNA分子量与λDNA(48 kb)接近,其紫外吸收比在1.66~1.89之间。第3次和第4次上清提取的DNA质量优于第1次和第2次。从提取产量看,每克鲜重提取DNA量最小为15 μg·g-1(核桃楸第4次上清),最高的为272 μg·g-1(山葡萄第3次上清)。西伯利亚红松和偃松第1次和第2次上清基本未提出DNA,第3次和第4次上清中得到了较高质量的DNA。经酶切鉴定和PCR扩增,所提的基因组DNA可以用于进一步研究。  相似文献

1. Ontogenetic shifts in predator behaviour can affect the assessment of food‐web structure and the development of predator–prey models. Previous studies have shown that the diel activity pattern and functional response differed between larval instars of the carnivorous caddis, Rhyacophila dorsalis. The present study examines switching by larvae of R. dorsalis presented with different proportions of two prey types; either small (length 2–4 mm) and large (5–8 mm) Chironomus larvae for second, third, fourth and fifth instars of R. dorsalis; or Baetis rhodani (9–12 mm) and large Chironomus larvae for fourth and fifth instars. Experiments were performed in stream tanks with one Rhyacophila larva per tank and 200 prey arranged in nine different combinations of the two prey types (20 : 180, 40 : 160, 60 : 140, 80 : 120, 100 : 100, 120 : 80, 140 : 60, 160 : 40 and 180 : 20). Prey were replaced as they were eaten. A model predicted the functional response in the absence of switching and provided a null hypothesis against which any tendency to switch could be tested. 2. There was no prey switching in the second and third instars, with both instars always showing a preference for small over large Chironomus larvae. Prey switching occurred in the fourth and fifth instars. As the relative abundance of one prey type increased in relation to the alternative, the proportion eaten of the former prey changed from less to more than expected from its availability, the relationship being described by an S‐shaped curve. In the experiments with small and large Chironomus, the two instars switched to large larvae when their percentage of the total available prey exceeded 29% and 37% for fourth and fifth instars, respectively. In the experiments with Baetis and large Chironomus, both instars switched to Baetis larvae when their percentage of the total available prey exceeded 36%. 3. Non‐switching in second and third instars was related to their feeding strategies, both instars preferring smaller prey items. When the fourth and fifth instars foraged actively at night, they preferred larger over small Chironomus larvae, but when they behaved as ambush predators at dusk, they captured the more active Baetis larvae in preference to the more sedentary large Chironomus larvae and only switched to the latter when they were >64% of the available prey.  相似文献

Succession of chaparral shrubs was studied for the first 4 years after fire on the four major slope faces at three elevations in southern California. Although total cover fluctuated from year to year, shrub cover increased annually through the third year. There was little or no increase in shrub cover between the third and fourth years. Four years after fire the shrubs covered 55% ground surface at the highest elevation site but only 28% at the lowest elevation site. Shrub cover was similar between slope faces with one exception; at the lowest elevation site shrub cover was twice as great on the north and east-facing slopes as on the south and west-facing slopes. Post-fire recovery of shrubs was by seedlings and/or resprouts. Yucca whipplei was an exception in that it did not resprout once the aboveground parts were killed nor did seedlings establish after fire, however the aboveground parts of many Y. whipplei survived the fire. Species which reproduced entirely by seed did so in the first post-fire year from soil-stored seed with the exception of Ceanothus greggii at the highest elevation site. This species was entirely absent the first year after fire but abundant in the second year. Species producing both resprouts and seedlings varied from site to site in the proportion of resprouts:seedlings. Between 83–100% of the post-fire populations of Cercocarpus betuloides, Arctostaphylos glandulosa, and Xylococcus bicolor were resprouts whereas 12–13% of Ceanothus tomentosus were resprouts. For Adenostoma fasciculatum, resprouts constituted 27–54% of the population at the lowest elevation and 65–94% at the highest elevation; whereas, the Quercus dumosa population was 100% resprouts at the lowest elevation and 31–67% resprouts at the highest elevation. Data are presented on the height of resprouts and seedlings for all species at the end of the first post-fire year.  相似文献

Diet‐induced changes in food preferences in an oligophagous caterpillar were studied in order to characterize the conditions under which this induction occurs. The time course of acquisition and extinction of induced food preferences by larvae of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta (Johan.) (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae), was examined by varying the food and duration of larval food experience. Larvae were given feeding experience with the host plant tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum (Mill.) (Solanaceae), or the acceptable non‐host plant cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (Walp.) (Fabaceae), or switched from one to the other during different instars. Food preferences for V. unguiculata by the fourth or fifth instar larvae were measured individually in two‐choice tests with discs of V. unguiculata and moist filter paper. The acquisition or extinction of an induced food preference for V. unguiculata was indicated by larvae preferring V. unguiculata to filter paper or the reverse, respectively. Results showed that: (1) the period required for the acquisition of induced preference for V. unguiculata can be short (36 h), (2) food experience in either the third or fourth instar period is sufficient, and (3) the most recent feeding experience appears to be important. In contrast, the period required for extinction of induced preference for V. unguiculata appeared to be longer (1–3 instars), and both the most recent feeding experience and total duration of larval experience with the inducing food seem to play a role. Experience is not restricted to a particular instar period to acquire or extinguish such an induced food preference. The induced food preference for V. unguiculata was not very rigid and could be reversed by having one instar of feeding experience on L. esculentum. The findings indicate that diet‐induced food preferences in M. sexta contains elements of habituation and associative learning, but do not support food imprinting and induction of oligophagy.  相似文献

Background  

Chamydophila pneumoniae (CP) and/or Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) are two bacteria detected in vulnerable atheromas. In this study we aimed to analyze whether CP and/or MP aggravates atherosclerosis induced by cholesterol-enriched diet in C57BL/6 apoE KO male mice. Thirty male apoE KO mice aged eight weeks fed by a diet containing 1% cholesterol until 32 weeks of age were divided into four groups: the first was inoculated with CP (n = 7), the second with MP (n = 12), the third with both CP + MP (n = 5), and the fourth with saline (sham n = 6). The animals were re-inoculated at 36 weeks of age, and sacrificed at 40 weeks of age. Two ascending aorta and one aortic arch segments were sampled. In the most severely obstructed segment, vessel diameter, plaque height, percentage of luminal obstruction and the degree of adventitial inflammation were analyzed. The plaque area/intimal surface ratio was obtained by measuring all three segments. The adventitial inflammation was semiquantified (0 absent, 1 mild, 2 moderate, and 3 diffuse).  相似文献

The essential oil compositions of four botanically certified and commercially available samples of Omani lubans (oleo‐gum resins of Boswellia sacra Flueck .), locally known as Hoojri, Najdi, Shathari, and Shaabi in Jibali Arabic, obtained from plants growing in four different geographic locations of the Dhofar region of Oman, were analyzed by GC‐FID, GC/MS, and 13C‐NMR spectroscopy. The market price of these four grades of lubans differed considerably, according to their color, clump size, and texture. However, this study revealed that Hoojri, the first grade luban, and Shaabi, the fourth grade luban, which greatly differed in their price, closely resembled each other in their essential oil composition, yield, and physicochemical characteristics, except the color and texture. The composition, yield, and specific rotation of the oils of Najdi and Shathari, the second and the third grade lubans, respectively, were different from those of Hoojri and Shaabi, but they both had high limonene contents. Najdi oil was different from the other three oils in terms of its high myrcene content. α‐Pinene was the principal component in all the oils and can be considered as a chemotaxonomical marker that confirms the botanical and geographical source of the resins. All the oils showed pronounced activity against a panel of bacteria, and the trend in their bioactivity and their mode of action are discussed.  相似文献

The effects of changes in growth temperature on photosynthesis and carotenoid composition were examined in Zea mays L. leaves of different age and different developmental history. The plants were first grown at sub-optimal temperature (14°C) until the full development of the third leaf. At that time, the mature third leaf and the immature fourth leaf had a low chlorophyll (Chl) content, a low Chl a/b ratio, a high carotenoid/Chl a+b ratio, a high xanthophyll/β-carotene ratio, and about 80% of the xanthophyll cycle pool (violaxanthin [V] + antheraxanthin [A] + zeaxanthin [Z]) was in the form of zeaxanthin and antheraxanthin. When the temperature was increased from 14°C to 24°C for three days, increased Chl synthesis, accompanied by an increase in the Chl a/b ratio, took place. The ratios of lutein, neoxanthin, and V+A+Z to Chl a+b decreased markedly, whereas no significant changes appeared in the β-carotene/Chl a+b ratio. Furthermore, there was a sharp decrease in the xanthophyll/β-carotene ratio and most of zeaxanthin was converted to violaxanthin in the xanthophyll cycle. The third leaf and the tip segment of the fourth leaf, both expanded at 14°C, showed little difference in their pigment contents. However, the rate of CO2 assimilation of the tip segment of the fourth leaf was nearly twice that of the third leaf on the third day at 24°C, while the photosynthetic activity was similar in both leaves before the transfer to 24°C. During the warm period at 24°C, new leaf tissue (basal segment of the fourth leaf and part of a fifth leaf) was formed. On the third day at 24°C, the pigment content of 24°C-grown leaf tissue did not differ much from that of 14°C-grown leaf tissue with the exception that the total carotenoid content was lower in the former as compared to the latter, mainly because of a lower V+A+Z content. The rate of CO2 assimilation of 24°C-grown leaf tissue was comparable to that of the tip segment of the fourth leaf. Regardless of which leaf tissue is considered, reducing the temperature from 24°C to 14°C for 5 days slightly affected the pigment content, but violaxanthin was largely converted to zeaxanthin and antheraxanthin in the xanthophyll cycle. The results indicate that compared to old leaf tissue of mature leaves, physiologically younger leaf tissue of immature leaves is much more able to recover from depressions in the photosynthetic activity induced by growth at sub-optimal temperature when the plants experience optimal growth temperatures, but that factors other than the pigment content must determine this capability.  相似文献

One example is the reorganization of peripheral nerves in the abdomen, where five pairs of abdominal nerves (A4–A8) fuse to form the terminal nerve trunk. This reorganization is associated with selective remodeling of four layers that ensheath each peripheral nerve. The neural lamella (NL), is the first to dismantle; its breakdown is initiated by 6 hours after puparium formation, and is completely removed by the end of the first day. This layer begins to re‐appear on the third day of metamorphosis. Perineurial glial (PG) cells situated just underneath the NL, undergo significant proliferation on the first day of metamorphosis, and at that stage contribute to 95% of the glial cell population. Cells of the two inner layers, Sub‐Perineurial Glia (SPG) and Wrapping Glia (WG) increase in number on the second half of metamorphosis. Induction of cell death in perineurial glia via the cell death gene reaper and the Diptheria toxin (DT‐1) gene, results in abnormal bundling of the peripheral nerves, suggesting that perineurial glial cells play a role in the process. A significant number of animals fail to eclose in both reaper and DT‐1 targeted animals, suggesting that disruption of PG also impacts eclosion behavior. The studies will help to establish the groundwork for further work on cellular and molecular processes that underlie the co‐ordinated remodeling of glia and the peripheral nerves they ensheath. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The Homudu site was discovered closed to the northeastern part of the village Homudu in the Lochiang Commune of Yu-yao zhejiang sheng. The excavations were conducted in 1973–1974 and 1977–1978. Four layers of cultural deposits are super-posed one upon the other. The first and topmost layer corresponds to the middle layer at Sun-tse in Ch’ing-p’n Country, while the second layer represents the Ma-jla-bin Culture of Chiahsing Country. The third and fourth layers belong to a hitherto unknown culture, which has been provisionally named as the Homudu Culture. A palynologicai and paleobotanical study is made for showing the paleovcgetation and palcoclimate of that time. 1. The first sporo-pollen assemblage, obtaind from the fourth and lower part of third layers is marked by predominence of Gramineae pollen (11%–71%). The majority of Gramineae pollen is of large size. Exine is thin and more psilate. Annulus of the single pore is about 2.5–3.7 μm in wide. This kind of pollen very much resembles that of the recent rice (Oryza sativa). Besides that, the herbaceous pollen of Artemisia, Caulophyllum, Actinostemma, Polygonum, Rubia and some elements of Cyperaceae,Chenopodiaceae, Umbelliferae are noted. Pollen of trees and shrubs belong to Quercus, Castanopsis, Liquidambar, Mallotus, etc. Fern spores are of Lygodium. Ophioderma, Lemmaphyllum, Microsorium and Pyrrosia. A lot of plant remains (leaves and seeds) have been observed in the fourth layer: Chloran- thus fortunei, Magnolia coco? Phoebe sheareri, Lindera glauca, Camptotheca acumninata Prunus davidiana, Choerospondias axillaris, Trapa bispinosa, Quercus myrsinaefolia, Cas- tanopsis tibetana, etc. Sporo-pollen assemblage and plant remains reflect a subtropical everygreen and deciduous broad-leaved mixed forests flourished on mountain slopes and some rice fields scattered in the plains around the site. The climate of that time was warm and humid and rather warmer than that of the present. Radiocarbon tests of an acorn and a wood fragment unearthed from the fourth layer reveal that they date from about seven thousand years ago, corresponding to the Atlan- tic period of Europe. 2. The second sporopollen assemblage, obtained from the middle and the upper parts of third layer is predominent by pollen of trees, such as Quercus spp., Liquidambar formosana and others. In herbs, the pollen of Gramineae, Cypcraceae and water plants deereased, but those of Artemisia and Chenopodiaceae increased. The climate than was warm but somewhat drier than that of previous period. 3. The sporo-pollen assemblages from the second and the first layers were mainly composed of temperate elements, such as Quercus, Ulmus, Salix, Where the subtropical elements Liquidambar and Altingia decreased or completely disappeared.. These indicate that the climate become cooler than that of the previous periods. Radiocarbon tests of a wood fragment obtained from the second layer reveal that its date was from 5600 years ago, then the age of the second layer would correspond to the Subboreal period of Europe. A lot of rice pollen grains, along with a large amount of the remains of rice busks were obtained from the fourth layer in the site, which indicats that the rice plants were cultivated in China at least seven thousand years ago.  相似文献
