Three experiments to investigate the effect of pollination by blowflies (Calliphora and Lucilia spp.) and honeybees (Apis mellifera) on seed yield and crossing level were made using a mixture of plants from two open-pollinated cultivars of onions (Allium cepa) in breeders' cages. No consistent differences were found between pollinators. In two experiments, fly pollination gave significantly higher yields than bee pollination but in the third, bee pollination gave slightly more seed. Crossing between cultivars, assessed by progeny testing on one cultivar, varied between 22-7 and 55-9%. Differences in crossing level attributable to the pollinators were not consistent and were not or only just statistically significant, but there were significant and substantial differences between the experiments themselves. Where more umbels were produced by the red-bulbed cultivar than by the yellow, higher crossing levels were found in the yellow cultivar. The highest crossing levels were found in the only experiment where insects were not introduced until peak flowering time, but where seed yield was comparatively low. Crossing levels were lowest where the umbel numbers were approximately equal. Individual umbels studied showed that while seed set was usually heaviest at and just before the mid-flowering date, this period could correspond with the lowest levels of crossing during the flowering period, particularly if flowering of the two cultivars was not completely synchronous. In field plots, approximately 75% of crossed seeds sown survived to give harvestable bulbs, but fewer than 50% of selfed seeds did so. In an experiment in which crossing levels from different pollinators were similar but survival levels differed significantly, it was deduced that bees performed more crossing within a cultivar than flies.  相似文献

Wind pollination can provide reproductive insurance for animal‐pollinated dioecious plants in the absence of available pollinators, but combinations of insect and wind pollination (ambophily) have rarely been studied in hermaphrodite herbs. We examined the stable occurrence of insect pollination and wind pollination over 4 years in a population of a biennial Aconitum species (A. gymnandrum) with actinomorphic and degenerate sepals. The total frequency of visits of two bumblebee species showed no distinct fluctuations in the studied population among the 4 years. However, seed production of netted flowers after emasculation indicated wind pollination had occurred. The seed number of bagged flowers with one visit by bumblebees was significantly less than that of netted flowers after one visit, or in control flowers. Both seed number and fruit set of netted flowers were significantly lower than in control flowers. These results suggest that wind pollination provides supplementary pollen to unvisited and/or once‐visited flowers, but accounts for only a small amount of seed production compared to bumblebee pollination in natural conditions. Such a combination of insect and wind pollination might play an important role in maintaining sexual reproduction of this biennial herb, allowing it to persist in arid habitats on the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau, especially during Quaternary glacial periods when pollinator populations oscillated extensively.  相似文献

The phytochemical composition in two Tunisian globe artichoke cultivars (bracts, leaves, and floral stems) was evaluated in the plant byproducts. The results indicated that the bracts contain the highest levels of total phenols, o‐diphenols, and flavonoids, whereas tannins seem to be more abundant in the leaves. Bracts from the ‘Violet d'Hyères’ cultivar possessed more total phenols (160.8 mg/g DW), flavonoids (64.9 mg/g DW), and anthocyanins (15.3 μg/g DW) than the ‘Blanc d'Oran’ bracts (134.5 mg/g DW, 51.2 mg/g DW, and 8.3 μg/g DW, resp.). Sixty‐four volatile compounds were identified in the headspace of globe artichoke material, particularly in the bracts. The volatile profile showed that sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and non‐terpene derivatives were the main volatiles emitted by the bracts in both cultivars. These results suggest that globe artichoke byproducts might represent a potential source of natural compounds, which could be used as nutraceuticals or as ingredients in the design of functional foods.  相似文献

The ability of globe artichoke to produce inflorescences (capitula) during the autumn when the market price is highest is lost when plants are propagated from seed, as are most F1 hybrid cultivars. To gain an understanding of the phenology of seed‐propagated globe artichoke, both vernalised and non‐vernalised seedlings grown from open pollinated progeny of ‘Spinoso sardo’ plants were transplanted into the field at two monthly intervals covering a whole year. Final leaf number and the date of unfolding of each leaf were used to calculate the phyllochrons. The average final leaf number increased from 24 to 88 in response to increasing daylength above an approximately 11 h threshold during the first 30 days after emergence, and this variate explained about 90% of the variation in the thermal time taken to reach the bolting stage. The average phyllochron ranged from 56 to 96°Cd among the six emergence dates and was the major underlying physiological cause of the loss of early flowering shown by seed‐propagated plants. Genotypic variation for phyllochron within an emergence date was strongly associated with variation for the length of the emergence to bolting stage period. The limited effect of vernalisation on development indicated that the late flowering tendency of seed‐propagated plants cannot be attributed to an unfulfilled cold requirement.  相似文献

The measurement of insect visits to flowers is essential for basic and applied pollination ecology, but is often fraught with difficulty. Floral visitation is highly variable and observational studies are limited in scope due to the considerable time needed to acquire reliable data. Our study investigates whether the analysis of hydrocarbon residues (footprints) deposited by insects during flower visits allows the reconstruction of the visitor community and the prediction of seed set for large numbers of plants. In three consecutive years we recorded bumblebee visitation to wild plants of comfrey, Symphytum officinale, and later used gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to quantify bumblebee-derived unsaturated hydrocarbons (UHCs) extracted from flowers. The UHCs washed from corollae were most similar to the tarsal UHC profile of the most abundant bumblebee species, Bombus pascuorum, in all 3 years. The species compositions of the bumblebee communities estimated from UHCs on flowers were also similar to those actually observed. There was a significant positive correlation between the observed number of visits by each of three bumblebee species (contributing 3–68% of the flower visits) and the estimated number of visits based on UHC profiles. Furthermore, significant correlations were obtained separately for workers and drones of two species. Seed set of comfrey plants was positively correlated with overall bumblebee visitation and the total amount of UHCs on flowers, suggesting the potential for pollen limitation. We suggest that quantifying cumulative footprint hydrocarbons provides a novel way to assess floral visitation by insects, and that this method can be used to predict seed set in pollen-limited plants.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to determine the cause of an apparently new disorder of globe artichoke ( Cynara scotymus L.) characterised by a localised black necrosis in the receptacle of the flower buds. The effects of single and mixed infections by artichoke latent potyvirus (ALV) and broad bean wilt virus – French artichoke (BBWV-FA) in buds with necrosis of three globe artichoke cultivars were studied. Virus-free plants developed diseased buds irrespective of whether the plants were 1 or 2 years old, but the presence of ALV and/or BBWV-FA significantly increased black spot occurrence on 2-year-old plants. Virus effects were dependent on cultivar, cv. Capitan being less susceptible to virus infection than cvs Camus de Bretagne and Castel. The head size of the globe artichoke was found to be related to the rate of necrosis, with a higher incidence for terminal buds.
ALV and BBWV-FA did not cause the disorder but favour its development probably by weakening plants through increased leaf transpiration. The results are discussed in relation to a possible physiological disorder exacerbated by the presence of ALV and/or BBWV-FA.  相似文献

Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) cultivars are conserved in genebanks for use in breeding and horticultural research programs. Jerusalem artichoke collections are particularly vulnerable to environmental and biological threats because they are often maintained in the field. These field collections could be securely conserved in genebanks if improved cryopreservation methods were available. This work used four Jersualem artichoke cultivars (‘Shudi’, ‘M6’, ‘Stampede’, and ‘Relikt’) to improve upon an existing procedure. Four steps were optimized and the resulting procedure is as follows: preculture excised shoot tips (2–3 mm) in liquid MS medium supplemented with 0.4 M sucrose for 3 days, osmoprotect shoot tips in loading solution for 30 min, dehydrate with plant vitrification solution 2 for 15 min before rapid cooling in liquid nitrogen, store in liquid nitrogen, rapidly rewarm in MS liquid medium containing 1.2 M sucrose, and recover on MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg L?1 GA3 for 3–5 days in the dark and then on the same medium for 4–6 weeks in the light (14 h light/10 h dark). After cryopreservation, Jerusalem artichoke cultivar ‘Shudi’ had the highest survival (93%) and regrowth (83%) percentages. Cultivars ‘M6’, ‘Stampede’, and ‘Relikt’ achieved survival and regrowth percentages ranging from 44 to 72%, and 37–53%, respectively. No genetic changes, as assessed by using simple sequence repeat markers, were detected in plants regenerated after LN exposure in Jerusalem artichoke cultivar ‘Shudi’. Differential scanning calorimetry analyses were used to investigate the thermal activities of the tissues during the cryopreservation process and it was determined that loading with 2.0 M sucrose and 0.4 M sucrose dehydrated the shoot tips prior to treatment with PVS2. Histological observations revealed that the optimized droplet vitrification protocol caused minimal cellular damage within the meristem cells of the shoot tips.  相似文献

Synchronous monocarpy in long‐lived plants is often associated with pollination by wind, in part because infrequent mass flowering may satiate pollinators. Selfing in synchronous monocarps may provide reproductive assurance but conflict with the benefits of outcrossing, a key evolutionary driver of synchrony. We predicted that animal‐pollinated species with synchronous flowering would have unspecialised flowers and attract abundant generalised pollinators, but predictions for selfing and outcrossing frequencies were not obvious. We examined the pollination biology of Isoglossa woodii (Acanthaceae), an insect‐pollinated, monocarpic herb that flowers synchronously at 4–7‐year intervals. The most frequent visitor to I. woodii flowers was the African honeybee, Apis mellifera adansonii. Hand‐pollination failed to enhance seed production, indicating that the pollinators were not saturated. No seed was set in the absence of pollinators. Seed set was similar among selfed and outcrossed flowers, demonstrating a geitonogamous mixed‐mating strategy with no direct evidence of preferential outcrossing. Flowers contained four ovules, but most fruits only developed one seed, raising the possibility that preferential outcrossing occurs by post‐pollination processes. We argue that a number of the theoretical concerns about geitonogamous selfing as a form of reproductive assurance do not apply to a long‐lived synchronous monocarp such as I. woodii.  相似文献

Pollinators play a key role within most terrestrial communities in maintaining plant populations, as well as pollinating many agricultural crops for seed and fruit production. The mobility of pollinating animals is significant to their importance but we know little about how landscape structure influences pollinator movements. Linear landscape features such as hedgerows and embankments are conspicuous features of agricultural landscape structure and are important artificial habitats in their own right. However, there has been some debate as to the function of these landscape elements as corridors between larger expanses of semi‐natural habitat separated by urban and agricultural habitats. Few studies have specifically studied insect flight responses to linear landscape elements. By observing bumblebee flight behaviour along hedgerows and, by creating a medium‐scale experimental array of flower patches using an artificial linear feature, we examined whether such structures can elicit an oriented flight response along them and therefore facilitate insect movement through the landscape. We found that both hedgerows and artificial linear landscape features can influence the flight directions of bumblebees (Bombus spp. Hymenoptera, Apidae), one of Europe's most important groups of pollinators. A bioassay experiment in which Salvia pratensis (Lamiaceae) was planted into landscape patches with differing numbers of connecting hedgerows showed that this directional response can have a profound effect on plant reproductive success – plants had increased pollinator activity, pollen receipt and subsequent seed set in patches with more connections. The overall hedgerow connectedness of a landscape is therefore important both to bumblebee movement and to those plants which depend on bumblebees for pollination services.  相似文献

Pollination systems and associated floral traits generally differ between core and marginal populations of a species. However, such differences are rarely examined in plants with a mixed wind‐ and bumblebee‐pollination system, and the role of wind pollination during range expansion in ambophilous plants remains unclear. We compared floral traits and the contributions of bumblebee and wind pollination in refugium and marginal populations of the ambophilous plant Aconitum gymnandrum. We found that most floral traits differed between the two populations, and those traits associated with the shift to wind pollination were pronounced in the marginal population. Bumblebee visitation rates varied significantly, but were generally low in the marginal population. Wind pollination occurred in both populations, and the efficiency was lower than that of bumblebee pollination. Two types of pollen grains, namely round and fusiform pollen, were transported to a stigma by bumblebees and wind, but fusiform pollen contributed to wind pollination to a larger degree, especially in the marginal population. Our results suggest that wind pollination was enhanced by pollen dimorphism in the marginal population of A. gymnandrum, and wind pollination may provide reproductive assurance when bumblebee activity is unpredictable during range expansion, indicating that ambophily is stable in this species and shift in pollination system could be common when plants colonize new habitats.  相似文献

Germination and seedling emergence studies were made on seeds harvested from four different umbel positions of three cultivars of celery (Apium graveolens L.). Although heavier seeds were produced from primary umbels than from other umbels, these were less viable as measured by the germination percentage at I8°C in the light. However, germination of viable seeds from quaternary umbels was lower than that of seeds from primary umbels at 18°C in the dark when incubated with GA4, (2 × 10 ?4M) and seed from secondary and tertiary umbels tended to be intermediate in response. All viable seeds germinated when N6-benzyladenine (10?2M) was used in combination with GA4. Seeds from quaternary umbels of two of the cultivars had a lower high-temperature limit for germination in the dark than did seeds from other umbels. In glasshouse experiments the emergence of viable ‘quaternary’ seeds of these cultivars was higher than that of ‘primary’ seeds. Under these conditions the time to 50% of the final emergence as determined after 42 days was similar for seeds from all umbel positions within each cultivar. In two varieties seedling weights were greater from seeds of primary as compared to quaternary umbels, and in general, the largest seedlings arose from the heaviest seeds and the smallest from the lightest seeds in all three cultivars.  相似文献

In order to elucidate the GA3-priming-induced physiochemical changes responsible for induction of salt tolerance in wheat, the primed and non-primed seeds of two spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars, namely, MH-97 (salt intolerant) and Inqlab-91 (salt tolerant) were sown in a field treated with 15 dS m−1 NaCl salinity. Although all the three concentrations (100, 150 and 200 mg L−1) of GA3 were effective in improving grain yield in both cultivars, the effect of 150 mg L−1 GA3 was much pronounced particularly in the salt intolerant cultivar when under salt stress. Seed priming with GA3 altered the pattern of accumulation of different ions between shoots and roots in the adult plants of wheat under saline conditions. Treatment with GA3 (150 mg L−1) decreased Na+ concentrations both in the shoots and roots and increased Ca2+ and K+ concentrations in the roots of both wheat cultivars. GA3-priming did not show consistent effect on gaseous exchange characteristics and the concentrations of auxins in the salt stressed plants of both wheat cultivars. However, all concentrations of GA3 reduced leaf free ABA levels in the salt intolerant, while reverse was true in the salt tolerant cultivar under saline conditions. Priming with GA3 (150 mg L−1) was very effective in enhancing salicylic acid (SA) concentration in both wheat cultivars when under salt stress. Treatment with GA3 (100–150 mg L−1) lowered leaf free putrescine (Put) and spermidine (Spd) concentrations in the plants of both wheat cultivars. The decrease in polyamines (Put and Spd) and ABA concentrations in the salt stressed plants of the salt intolerant cultivar treated with GA3 suggested that these plants might have faced less stress compared with control. Thus, physiologically, GA3-priming-induced increase in grain yield was attributed to the GA3-priming-induced modulation of ions uptake and partitioning (within shoots and roots) and hormones homeostasis under saline conditions.  相似文献

Calyptridium monospermum (Portulacaceae) comprises two biological races visited by different groups of insects. One race, pollinated by a bumblebee, Bombus vosnesenskii (Apidae), is outcrossing, while the other race is pollinated casually by a variety of other insects whose visits result in insect-mediated self-pollination and geitonogamy within the inflorescence. Insect-mediated selfing is also the mode of pollination in the closely related species, C. umbellatum. While all plants of both species are self-compatible, insect visitation is necessary for good seed set. Selfing populations of C. monospermum exhibit many floral adaptations for insect-mediated self-pollination which parallel those of the selfing C. umbellatum, while retaining vegetative characteristics typical of C. monospermum. These floral traits involve flower color and odor, style and stamen orientation, size of stigmatic surfaces, number of pollen grains produced, density of open flowers on inflorescences, and presence or absence of protogyny. Artifical pollination experiments show that these floral adaptations are effective in increasing the probability of insect-mediated self-pollination. Insect-mediated selfing in C. umbellatum and in some populations of C. monospermum is encouraged and probably made necessary by the inconstant pollinating behavior of the insects which visit these plants, as shown by the large percentage of non-Calyptridium pollen recovered from the bodies of insects captured while visiting these plants.  相似文献

Brassica rapa L., is a crop grown globally and studies have indicated that insect pollination can improve yields. However, the importance of insect pollination in this crop depends on cultivar reproductive biology, insect pollinator species and their abundances. In Bangladesh, the acreage of B. rapa for oilseed production has been expanding, but little is known about whether insects contribute to yield improvements. Using the commonly grown variety Tori-7, we found that plants with inflorescences left exposed to flower visiting insects (body width > 1.5 mm) had a 30.8% greater seed yield compared to those where insect flower visitors were excluded. Of 794 insect flower visiting individuals recorded from observation and trapping surveys conducted across four separate fields, Apis bees (four spp.) were the most abundant (66.1%), followed by flies Musca domestica (14.7%), Sepsis fulgens (6.3%) and hoverflies (3.0%; 3 spp; Syrphidae). Other flower visitors included ants, wasps, beetles, butterflies and moths. For the cultivar assessed, we calculated the economic value of oilseed rape was $US 87.5 million per annum in Bangladesh, of which the economic value of insect pollination was $US 26.92 million per annum. Thus, one in every four dollars earned by our Bangladeshi growers resulted from insect crop pollination. This demonstrates to growers the need to promote and protect insect pollination to optimize their economic returns.  相似文献

Guayule (Tarthenium argentatum, Asteraceae) is one of two major plant species grown for natural rubber. Studies were conducted to determine the effect of honey bee (Apis mellifera) pollination and season on seed set and total seed yield/ha. The experiments involved four pollination treatments: plants caged with bees; plants caged without bees; plants open pollinated (uncovered); and plants individually covered. Seeds were harvested monthly July–September 1984, and May–September 1985. Plots with bees produced at least 150% more seeds than plots without bees, and there were no qualitative differences in the seed weights among treatments. Highest seed yield was in May and September. Results indicate that (1) insect pollination in guayule increases seed yield and (2) fewer seeds are produced in the warmest months.  相似文献

Pollination systems of Salix miyabeana and Salix sachalinensis were studied at a riverside in northern Japan in order to measure the balance of wind pollination and insect pollination. In 1996, 19 clones of each species were selected, and seed-set success by a net-bagging (to exclude insect visitation) and an artificial pollination (to remove pollen limitation) were compared to by natural pollination. For S. miyabeana, the same experiment was repeated in two populations in 1997. Proportion of seed set through wind pollination dominated in both species in this study. Pollen limitation was common under natural conditions, and S. sachalinensis relied more on insect pollination for seed production than S. miyabeana. Meteorological factors such as precipitation and hours of sunshine during the flowering season influenced the potential reproductive activity of the willow between years. In the wet and cloudy spring of 1996, clones which obtained high seed set depended more on insect pollination for both species, whereas in the dry and sunny spring of 1997, such clones depended more on wind pollination for S. miyabeana. Because the efficiency of wind pollination seemed to be more sensitive to fluctuating weather conditions than insect pollination, insect pollination was considered to play an assurance role for seed production in these willows.  相似文献

Different cultivars/transgenic lines of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) were crossed (as females) with different cultivars/populations of Brassica campestris. All cross combinations produced seed, with an average seed set per pollination of 9.8. Backcrossing of selected interspecific hybrids (as females) to B. campestris resulted in a much lower seed set, average 0.7 seed per pollination. In the single backcross progeny where a large enough population (92 plants) was obtained for analysis, 33 B. napus specific RAPD markers were investigated to determine the extent of transfer of oilseed rape genetic material into this population. Markers were transferred to the backcross generation with frequencies ranging from 26% to 91%. Almost all of the markers (30/33) were transferred in a frequency not significantly different from 50%. Analysis of the pairwise segregation of markers revealed that 23 markers could be assigned to six linkage groups, most probably reflecting six B. napus C-chromosomes. The presence of backcross plants with recombinant genotypes suggests that complex genetic processes can take place during interspecific hybridisation and backcrossing in these Brassica species. The implications of our results for the possible choice of integration sites of transgenes in oilseed rape are discussed.  相似文献

Susceptible and resistance wheat cultivars, Triticum aestivum L, were presented to two biotypes of Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), in multiple choice tests to assay their relative acceptability as host plants. Both apterae (third and fourth instars) and alate adults were offered plants at the two-leaf stage in different cultivar combinations at 22±1℃ and 16:8 (L: D) hour photoperiod. Apterae were released from Petri dishes in the center of a circle of test plants, whereas alatae dispersed from a mature aphid colony to settle on plants arranged in rows. Both alatae and apterous nymphs of both biotypes readily colonized all cultivars tested:‘2137', ‘Akron',‘Ankor’,‘ Halt’ ,‘ Jagger’ ,‘ Prairie Red’ , ‘Stanton',‘TAM 107',‘TAM 110',‘Trego', ‘ Yuma', and ‘Yumar'. Fewer biotype I apterae responded (settled and fed) in the combination containing more resistant (Dn4- and Dny-expressing) cultivars, compared to the combinations that had fewer. The reverse was true for biotype 2 apterae; more aphids responded in the combination containing the largest number of Dn4 expressing cultivars. Differential colonization of cultivars was observed in only one combination, in which biotype 2 apterae colonized Akron and Yumar in larger numbers than they did Stanton and Yuma. A separate experiment confirmed that, 48 hours after infestation, more biotype 2 apterae abandoned plants of Yuma than plants of Yumar. This differential response was likely due to genetic differences between the two ' near isogenic' lines that include the lack of Dn4 expression in Yuma. Choice tests with alatae did not result in differential rates of cultivar colonization by either biotype in any combination tested. These results suggest that young wheat plants appear to lack any meaningful antixenosis toward D. noxia, even though the aphids appear to perceive, and sometimes respond to, certain differences in cultivar suitability.  相似文献

Experiments were done with the aim of developing a reliable method for assessing the susceptibility of potato cultivars to blackleg caused by Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica, in the field. Over four years seed tubers were either stab-inoculated at the heel-end prior to planting, vacuum infiltrated with bacteria just after harvest or vacuum infiltrated prior to sprouting and after ‘cutting’ or ‘pricking’. Stab inoculation produced fewer diseased plants but generally a greater range of symptoms than vacuum infiltration. Vacuum infiltrated ‘cut’ seed gave most disease whereas infiltration at harvest and infiltration of ‘pricked’ seed gave similar disease incidence. The cultivar Maris Piper was more resistant than Desiree in 1981 and 1982, and Pentland Javelin than Ulster Sceptre in 1983 and 1984, largely irrespective of the inoculation treatment. Irrigation improved yields but did not affect disease symptoms. In further field experiments over three years, each with a minimum of 20 cultivars, seed tubers were sliced just before planting at a standard distance from the apex and inoculated by applying a pad impregnated with inoculum. Differences were shown between cultivars and it is suggested that the method could be adapted for testing for blackleg susceptibility under controlled environment conditions.  相似文献
