The surface receptors in Branchiobdella pentodonta consist of “sense buttons” prevalent on the prostomium, isolated sense cells all along the body of the animal, and free nerve endings. The “sense buttons” are uni- and multiciliated neurosensitive elements and supporting cells together with mucus glandular processes and muscle fibers. In the neurosensitive elements the cilia are always surrounded by cytoplasmic extroversion. The cytoplasm of the apical zone has abundant small dense granules, mitochondria, bands of tonofilaments, and microtubules. The cilium of uniciliated elements originates from three short roots. The highly vacuolated support cells surround the neurosensitive elements, separating them from each other. The “sense buttons” appear to be mechanoreceptors and chemoreceptors, and the isolated sense cells tactile mechanoreceptors, as are the free nerve endings. The surface receptors are compared with those of other Oligochaeta and Hirudinea.  相似文献

A histomorphological study of the development of the pharyngeal jaws in the Carangid fish Trachinotus teraia shows that they transform progressively from tiny organs with sharp superficial teeth, to thick ones with rounded teeth embedded in bony tissue. The morphological transformations take place simultaneously with a shift to a diet based on molluscs. Though odontogenesis takes place deep in the pharyngeal jaws, at all developmental stages, pharyngeal epithelium participates to the formation of teeth. Long epithelial strands penetrate in the depth of the bony jaw and here induce differentiation of “bell organs.” As the young teeth migrate passively toward the occlusal surface, while the jaw grows, the pharyngeal jaws of Trachinotus teraia almost behave like the “coalesced” teeth of the Tetraodontidae with respect to the morphogenetic processes of their growth. The developmental phenotypic plasticity of the pharyngeal jaws of Trachinotus teraia then may be compared to that of various mollusicivore cichlids. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The fully developed oral disc of the tadpole of Bufo bufo consists of dorsal and ventral labia bearing, respectively, two and three ridges bearing numerous horny denticles, a horny beak provided with jaw sheath serrations, and large lateral papillae that are borne by two cutaneous plicae. As development progresses toward metamorphosis, these structures gradually regress until they disappear. Each cusped clavate labial denticle adheres, by means of a thin peduncle, to a similar labial denticle fixed in the lip and formed by a group of three or four cells that keratinize gradually and thus present remarkable differences in their morphology. Once all the cells of a group have been converted into horny tissue, the denticle sheds and is replaced by the underlying one. The beak serrations also are horny structures; each consists of a columnar band of cells which undergoes a gradual keratinization. The horny cells that detach themselves at intervals, being replaced by those of the underlying anlagen. The labial denticles and the beak serrations keratinize in two distinct ways. In the former, the desmosomal filaments appear to play an important role whereas, in the latter, the keratin seems to be synthesized “ex novo” by the ribosomes.  相似文献

The tegumental surface of a new strigeid metacercaria, Nematostrigea sp., which is a parasite of the freshwater fish Channa gachua (Hamilton) in central Vietnam, is described for the first time using scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy. In addition to the general tegumental surface in various parts of the body, details of the surface of the suckers, lappets and holdfast organ are presented, as are variations in the form and distribution of the body spines. As good taxonomic criteria are few in diplostomoid metacercariae at both specific and generic levels, a number of the ultrastructural features revealed may prove to represent taxonomically informative characters. These include the presence of: two rings of dome-shaped papillae localised at different levels on the rim of the oral sucker, a single ring of ciliated papillae on the inner margin of the ventral sucker and a band of dome-shaped papillae along the lateral margins of the broad body-fold in the ventral forebody; an unarmed oral sucker and anteroventral surface of the forebody, although the latter bears protuberant secretory pores; an armed ventral sucker covered by six-pointed spines, except on its rim; multi-pointed spines along the dorsal and ventral sides of the forebody, with the number of their teeth increasing posteriorly; multi-pointed spines on the forebody which gradually transform into single-pointed, more widely distributed spines on the hindbody, disappearing completely at posterior end of the body; the surface of the lappets with a particular distribution of pores leading to three types of secretory glands and three topographical modifications (areas where the surface is smooth, bears digitiform processes or bears recurved, dagger-shaped spines); and the surface of the holdfast organ which is covered with densely packed, straight or slightly curved, simple spines on its lateral surface but is smooth medially.  相似文献

Synopsis The post-metamorphic common sole, Solea solea, as well as the other Soleidae and Cynoglossidae, are characterized by oral jaw elements without teeth on the ocular side. A relatively large proportion of late sole larvae and early juveniles, routinely reared in the laboratory, showed dentigerous and shape-modified premaxillae and mandibles on the ocular side. Abnormal jaws were associated with dermal papillae and a lack of pigmentation on parts of the ocular side of the head. These features are probably the result of suppressed epigenetic mechanisms normally active during ontogeny. Insights into the morphological evolution of the soleid jaw apparatus are discussed.  相似文献

The ventral sucker of Schistosoma mansoni cercaria is a cupshaped structure that is attached to the ventral surface of the organism by a homogeneous connective tissue that surrounds the acetabular glands. The sucker consists of an extensive complex of circular and longitudinal muscles. The longitudinal muscles extend outwoard in a radial pattern to form the cup of the organ. Intermingled with the muscles are nerve bundles and subtegumental cells (cytons). Dendritic nerve fibers connect to sensory papillae which are found on the surface tegument. Two types of sensory papillae are present: a commonly found unsheathed uniciliated papilla, and a previously unidentified tegumental encapsulated structure. The present study concerned the morphology and surface ultrastructure of a plagiorchid, Glossidium pedatum, from bagrid fish of the river Nile in Egypt. Adult G. pedatum have an elongate body, tapered towards the anterior and posterior ends. Their oral sucker is small, sub‐terminal and rounded, measuring 0.200 mm in diameter. Sensory papillae around the oral sucker usually occur in small clusters of three to eight each. The ventral sucker is large, situated at the anterior end of the second third of the body, 0.299 mm in diameter, and is surrounded by three pairs of sensory papillae. Both suckers have rounded rims covered by tegumental spines. On the anterior part of the ventral surface of the body tegumental spines are small, pointed and closely spaced. A small triangular area of tegument anterior to the ventral sucker is devoid of spines. Tegumental spines on the mid‐region of the body slightly increase in size and number, especially towards the lateral aspects and posterior to the ventral sucker. Towards the posterior end of the body the spines progressively decrease in both size and number. The dorsal side exhibits similar surface features but the spines are less numerous and slightly smaller.  相似文献

DistylousLinum grandiflorum, L. mucronatum, andL. pubescens have dimorphic pollen grains. In short-styled flowers the exine has monomorphic processes each with a ring of papillae. In long-styled flowers the exine has two types of processes: small processes terminating in a spinule and larger processes with a central spinule surrounded by a ring of spinuels, papillae or buttresses. The distylousLinum species of four different sections, in which morph-specific differences in the wall structure of stigmatic papillae have been reported, also exhibit exine dimorphism. The muscular system in the posterior sucker of Branchiobdella pentodonta Whit. has circular, longitudinal and radial fibers. In the anterior sucker, which has circular and longitudinal fibers, the muscle system is scarce. Concentric fibers are found around the mouth. In both suckers the glandular elements form voluminous complexes secreting mucus for attachment to the substrate. Suckers show neuromuscular junctions and three distinct types of neuroglandular junctions: one with typical neurosecretory granules, one with larger neurosecretory granules produced by cells located at the origin of the segmental nerves, and one with presynaptic vesicles. The second type is peculiar to the posterior sucker. A comparison is made between suckers of Branchiobdella and those of leeches.  相似文献

Osteology, myology and motion analysis of the head of the anabantoid fish Helostoma temmincki, a specialized filter feeder, has revealed six functional units: neurocranium, suspensory apparatus, opercular apparatus, hyoid apparatus, branchial apparatus and pectoral girdle. Interactions between the functional units take place through four couplings involved in opening and protruding the jaws. The first coupling is activated in the beginning of the opening cycle by the levator operculi muscle through the opercular apparatus, interoperculomandibular ligament and mandible. The second is activated during feeding by contraction of the sternohyoideus through the hyoid apparatus, interopercular, interoperculomandibular ligament and mandible. The third coupling is active during feeding and “kissing” by contraction of epaxial muscles through mediation of the neurocranium to the jaw apparatus. The fourth coupling is the only one active during air intake and involves contraction of the levator arcus palatini which abducts and rotates the suspensory apparatus forwards, causing the mandible to drop. The retention of isolated ancestral characters during mosaic evolution are explained in terms of the maintenance of couplings which represent functional associations of seemingly remote structures. When natural selection acts on one component of a functional unit or coupling, it essentially acts on all associated elements simultaneously causing character complexes to evolve in common evolutionary trends. It is feasible that functional analysis can separate primary from secondary evolutionary trends.  相似文献

Summary The surface anatomy and the structures lining the pharynx of Halicryptus spinulosus were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The structures were compared and contrasted with those reported for other priapulids, particularly those features previously studied with SEM. Buccal papillae and pharyngeal teeth of two types were described. Surface structures observed with SEM were: scalids, abdominal setae, anal papillae, posterior warts and ring papillae. The latter three structures are unique among described priapulids. The anal papillae are composed of several rounded, perhaps pedunculate, structures; the posterior warts are composed of mitriform structures in close association with columnar structures. Both are located in separate depressions in the posterior integument. The ring papillae occur on the annuli close to the posterior end. Halicryptus spinulosus was previously thought to lack these structures.  相似文献

This paper describes the physiological and pharmacological parameters of the response of mature muscle fibers that develop from myoblasts in vitro to iontophoretically applied acetylcholine (ACh) and the distribution of ACh sensitivity over fibers innervated in vitro by spinal cord cells and uninnervated (control) fibers. Peaks of sensitivity were detected near nerve terminals on functionally innervated fibers, but the “extrasynaptic” chemosensitivity remained high. The distribution of chemosensitivity over uninnervated fibers is not uniform: peaks or “hot spots” were detected over most fibers. Autoradiography of cultures exposed to 125I-α-bungarotoxin is consistent with the uneven distribution detected by iontophoresis. Sensitivity peaks were usually located in the immediate vicinity of obvious muscle nuclei and conversely the membrane near most nuclei was more sensitive than that over other regions along the same cell. The relation between innervation and distribution of ACh sensitivity is discussed.  相似文献

Skeletal muscle cells (fibers) contract by shortening their parallel subunits, the myofibrils. Here we show a novel pattern of myofibril orientation in white muscle fibers of large black sea bass, Centropristis striata. Up to 48% of the white fibers in fish >1168 g had peripheral myofibrils undergoing an ~90o shift in orientation. The resultant ring band wrapped the middle of the muscle fibers and was easily detected with polarized light microscopy. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the reoriented myofibrils shared the cytoplasm with the central longitudinal myofibrils. A microtubule network seen throughout the fibers surrounded nuclei but was mostly parallel to the long‐axis of the myofibrils. In the ring band portion of the fibers the microtubule cytoskeleton also shifted orientation. Sarcolemmal staining with anti‐synapsin was the same in fibers with or without ring bands, suggesting that fibers with ring bands have normal innervation and contractile function. The ring bands appear to be related to body‐mass or age, not fiber size, and also vary along the body, being more frequent at the midpoint of the anteroposterior axis. Similar structures have been reported in different taxa and appear to be associated with hypercontraction of fibers not attached to a rigid structure (bone) or with fibers with unusually weak links between the sarcolemma and cytoskeleton, as in muscular dystrophy. Fish muscle fibers are attached to myosepta, which are flexible and may allow for fibers to hypercontract and thus form ring bands. The consequences of such a ring band pattern might be to restrict the further expansion of the sarcolemma and protect it from further mechanical stress. J. Trypsin-dissociated myoblasts from leg muscle of 12-day chick embryos have been cultured in monolayers. After four days the muscle cultures have been confronted with fragments of the spinal cord of six-day chick embryos. Electrophysiological and morphological analysis demonstrate that characteristic neuromuscular transmission can develop in these cultures. Electrical stimulation of the cord fragment evokes contractions of innervated muscle fibers, from which end plate potentials and miniature end plate potentials with average frequency around one per second or more can be recorded. D-tubocurarine (1 μg/ml) suppresses reversibly these synaptic potentials. Non-innervated muscle fibers are sensitive to acetylcholine over all their surface, while innervated muscle fibers are sensitive at the regions where structures suggestive of motor end plate (“bulb-type”) are found. We can conclude that neuromuscular connections developed in vitro in our experiments are functional in respect of transmission of impulses but also in respect of neurotrophic influences for restriction of chemosensitivity.  相似文献

The earthworm somatic muscle contains myoneural synapses forming clusters of “synaptic buttons” in which the proteins syntaxin 1, synaptotagmin 1, and alpha 1B subunit of the Ca2+ channel of the N-type were identified. It is supposed that “synaptic buttons” contain a limited number of active zones, which is due to their small size (1–2 μm) and the pattern of distribution of proteins of the exoendocytotic cycle. The postsynaptic membrane of cholinergic synapses contains nicotinic acetylcholine receptors able to bind alpha-bungarotoxin. The area of the position of receptors on postsynaptic membrane is strongly restricted to the synaptic contact region.  相似文献

A new nematode species, Cucullanus angeli n. sp., is described from specimens recovered from the intestine of Vieja intermedia (Günther, 1862) from the Lacantun River, State of Chiapas, Mexico. It is characterized largely by having an unusual distinct unpaired median papilla present on anterior cloacal lip in the male and the situation of phasmids (close to eighth pair of papillae); it is further characterized by equal spicules (length 175-475 microm), distribution of caudal papillae, a preanal sucker surrounded by first and second pair of papillae, and conical tail in both sexes, ending in small terminal digitiform process (being more conspicuous in the female).  相似文献

The gross and fine morphology of the major effector systems in the anthomedusan, Polyorchis penicillatus, is described and discussed in relation to the known physiological and behavioral properties of these systems. Swimming is controlled by an anastomosing network of giant neurons within the inner nerve ring and radial nerves. Although these neurons may be coupled by gap junctions it is likely that they form a syncytium. The photosensitivity of the “giants” is attributed to reflexive membranes within the cytoplasm. Giant neurons act as both the pre- and postsynaptic cell when forming synapses with other neurons of the inner nerve ring. Neuromuscular synapses between “giants” and the striated swimming muscle are found around the margin and along the radii. Swimming muscle cells are connected laterally by gap junctions and end-to-end by desmosomes which are sometimes elaborated with extra-thick filaments. Unstriated sphincter and radial muscles, the major muscles associated with crumpling, are both greatly folded over mesogloeal ridges and have processes that cross the mesogloea to contact the ring and radial canals, respectively. Synapses or other sites that might be responsible for exciting these muscles during crumpling have not been found. The ability of the endodermal lamella and canals to propagate action potentials can be accounted for by the numerous gap junctions that are seen in these tissues. The precise location where excitation is transferred to the nervous system to initiate crumpling is not known but epithelial bridges crossing the mesogloea are likely routes. Synapses between neurons originating in the outer nerve ring and tentacle longitudinal muscle can account for the control of tentacle length. Neurons of the outer nerve ring also synapse onto velar, radial fibers and the sphincter muscle. The inner and outer nerve rings have nervous connections. The organisation of the outer nerve ring and the arrangement of nerves within the endodermal plexus is described. A diagram showing the major connections and interactions of components of the effector systems is presented.  相似文献

The tegumental ultrastructure of the cercaria of the liver fluke, Clonorchis sinensis (Cobbold, 1875), was studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The body surface is almost encircled by many rows of regularly arranged spines. The tegumental syncytium of the body contains many rod-shaped dense granules and central electron-lucent bodies, neither of which are present in the tail tegument. There are four rows of hooked teeth and modified spines on the oral cone. These teeth are differentiated morphologically and probably functionally from the other body spines. Disc-shaped papillae with long or short cilia are distributed on the body in a bilaterally symmetrical pattern dorsally and ventrally. There are 30 to 37 papillae with much longer cilia laterally. Four pairs of papillae were found on the tail. From their structure and location these papillae appear to have a mainly tango- or rheoreceptive function. Another type of sheathed papillae is situated around the oral sucker. The cuticular tegument is expanded laterally at the base of the tail, forming a characteristic sac-like structure.  相似文献

Summary The ventral surface of the posterior sucker of Entobdella soleae, a monogenean skin parasite of the sole Solea solea, is covered with more than 800 papillae ranging in size from 2.5–19 m in diameter. The papillae are penetrated by nerves which double over themselves to form a stack-like array of lamellae running parallel to the surface of the haptor. No cilia or associated structures are present within these presumed sense organs and the papillae have no opening to the exterior. The much larger sucker papillae of a related species, E. hippoglossi, have been shown to have a similar ultrastructure.
