Miller et al. (1994) describe a model for representing spatial objects with no obvious landmarks. Each object is represented by a global translation and a normal deformation of a sphere. The normal deformation is defined via the orthonormal spherical-harmonic basis. In this paper we analyse the spherical deformation model in detail and describe how it may be used to summarize the shape of star-shaped three-dimensional objects with few parameters. It is of interest to make statistical inference about the three-dimensional shape parameters from continuous observations of the surface and from a single central section of the object. We use maximum-likelihood-based inference for this purpose and demonstrate the suggested methods on real data.  相似文献

Sampling experiments were performed to investigate mean square error and bias in estimates of mean shape produced by different geometric morphometric methods. The experiments use the isotropic error model, which assumes equal and independent variation at each landmark. The case of three landmarks in the plane (i.e., triangles) was emphasized because it could be investigated systematically and the results displayed on the printed page. The amount of error in the estimates was displayed as RMSE surfaces over the space of all possible configurations of three landmarks. Patterns of bias were shown as vector fields over this same space. Experiments were also performed using particular combinations of four or more landmarks in both two and three dimensions.It was found that the generalized Procrustes analysis method produced estimates with the least error and no pattern of bias. Averages of Bookstein shape coordinates performed well if the longest edge was used as the baseline. The method of moments (Stoyan, 1990, Model. Biomet. J. 32, 843) used in EDMA (Lele, 1993, Math. Geol. 25, 573) exhibits larger errors. When variation is not small, it also shows a pattern of bias for isosceles triangles with one side much shorter than the other two and for triangles whose vertices are approximately collinear causing them to resemble their own reflections. Similar problems were found for the log-distance method of Rao and Suryawanshi (1996, Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. 95, 4121). These results and their implications for the application of different geometric morphometric methods are discussed.  相似文献

Migrating insects may fly over large bodies of water that lack landmarks, but little is known about their ability to navigate in such a fluid environment. Using boat navigation instruments to measure compensation for fluctuations in crosswind drift, I investigated the ability of butterflies (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae, Nymphalidae and Pieridae) to orient with and without landmarks as they migrated naturally over the Caribbean Sea. I used the presence or absence of landmarks or clouds to evaluate their use by the butterflies as guides for compensation. Forty-one per cent of the butterflies compensated for crosswind drift, whereas only 16% did not compensate. No conclusion could be drawn for the remainder. Without landmarks or clouds, butterflies were significantly less likely to compensate for drift than when these local cues were present. Butterflies were more likely to compensate fully in the presence of a landmark than when only clouds were present. Phoebis sennae butterflies drifted in the morning and overcompensated for drift in the afternoon, a pattern found both within and between individuals independent of landmarks. Although I cannot exclude the use of clouds, this would probably result in undercompensation. Hence, a ground reference in conjunction with a sun or magnetic compass is the most likely orientation cue. In the absence of clouds, one butterfly compensated, at least in part, indicating that it was using ripples on the sea surface as a ground reference in conjunction with a sun or magnetic compass. The Central Australian desert ant Melophorus bagoti is the most thermophilic ant on the continent. It comes out to forage during the hottest part of the day in the summer months. The ant shares a cluttered, plant-filled habitat with other arthropods and uses a range of navigational strategies. We review recent studies on this species concerning its use of habitual routes, distant landmarks, landmarks around the nest, and path integration, which is keeping track of the distance and direction traveled from one's starting point. Functional predictions concerning the acquisition, retention, and integration of memories of distances and of landmarks are also reviewed, illuminating the behavioral ecology of spatial cognition.  相似文献

We used a new virtual program in two experiments to prepare subjects to perform the Morris water task (www.nesplora.com). The subjects were Psychology students; they were trained to locate a safe platform amidst the presence of four pinpoint landmarks spaced around the edge of the pool (i.e., two landmarks relatively near the platform and two landmarks relatively distant away from it). At the end of the training phase, we administered one test trial without the platform and recorded the amount of time that the students had spent in the platform quadrant. In Experiment 1, we conducted the test trial in the presence of one or two of the distant landmarks. When only one landmark was present during testing, performance fell to chance. However, the men outperformed the women when the two distant landmarks were both present. Experiment 2 replicated the previous results and extended it by showing that no sex differences exist when the searching process is based on the near landmarks. Both the men and the women had similarly good performances when the landmarks were present both individually and together. When present together, an addition effect was found. Far landmark tests favor configural learning processes, whereas near landmark tests favor elemental learning. Our findings suggest that other factors in addition to the use of directional cues can underlie the sex differences in the spatial learning process. Two major theories have been developed to explain the locationand evolution of leks. According to the hot-spot model leksare male initiated and occur because males aggregate at locationsof maximum female home range overlap. The alternative femalepreference model, on the other hand, assumes that leks are femaleinitiated, and that females prefer to mate with males that aggregate.Small heath butterfly leks are situated close to landmarks suchas trees and bushes in open grassland. Censuses of wild populationsand experiments with artificial landmarks showed that theirattractiveness increased with height and width measured at themiddle of tree height. Landmark width at field layer heightwas negatively correlated with attractiveness, which suggeststhat a cornet shape is preferred to a pyramid shape. Togetherthese landmark size variables explained 60% of variation inlek size. Release experiments showed that landmarks were approachedby receptive virgin females, but mated females were indifferentto them. Landmark use was correlated to microclimatic conditions.Males preferred wider landmarks during cooler weather. Theyalso competed for the lee side of landmarks. There was no correlationbetween the location of landmarks and the dispersion of matedfemales or emergence sites of females. Hence, receptive femaledispersion was largely determined by their mate-locating behavior,which in turn appeared to result from male dispersion. Leksmay initially have developed around easily detected visual cuesthat offered a more suitable microclimate for male activity.Females visiting these locations would find a suitable matemore rapidly and save valuable time for oviposition. Althoughnonadaptive evolution cannot be excluded, taken together theresults support the female preference model for lek evolution.  相似文献

The Australian desert ant Melophorus bagoti often follows stereotypical routes through a cluttered landscape containing both distant panoramic views and obstacles (plants) to navigate around. We created an artificial obstacle course for the ants between a feeder and their nest. Landmarks comprised natural objects in the landscape such as logs, branches, and tussocks. Many ants travelled stereotypical routes home through the obstacle course in training, threading repeatedly the same gaps in the landmarks. Manipulations altering the relations between the landmarks and the surrounding panorama, however, affected the routes in two major ways. Both interchanging the positions of landmarks (transpositions) and displacing the entire landmark set along with the starting position of the ants (translations) (1) reduced the stereotypicality of the route, and (2) increased turns and meanders during travel. The ants might have used the entire panorama in view-based travel, or the distal panorama might prime the identification and use of landmarks en route. Despite the large data set, both options (not mutually exclusive) remain viable.  相似文献

ObjectivesProsthetic socket is the contact interface between the stump and the prosthesis, and also the interface component that transmits forces from the stump to the prosthesis distal. The current prosthetic socket fit is a major factor affecting rehabilitation, especially with the stump volume fluctuations. The main goal of this article is to design an adjustable frame-type prosthetic socket with constant force to adapt to the stump volume fluctuations.Materials and methodsIn this paper, an adjustable frame-type prosthetic socket with constant force is designed. The constant force device is designed based on the superelasticity of the shape memory alloy for maintaining constant stump-socket interface stress and automatically adapting to certain volume fluctuations. The constant force extrusion performance of this prosthetic socket was verified and optimized by finite element analysis.ResultsThe results suggest that the constant force unit may maintain constant interface stress. According to the optimization results, the shape memory alloy dimensional parameters could be selected according to different requirements.ConclusionThe adjustable frame-type prosthetic socket allows the user to adjust the socket volume through the cable system and has a large heat dissipation area. The constant force unit maintains constant interface stress and automatically adapts to stump volume fluctuations.  相似文献

We investigated in laboratory conditions how foragers of the tropical ant Gigantiops destructor develop individually distinctive landmark routes. Way-finding along a familiar route involved the recognition of at least two locations, nest and feeding site, and the representation of spatial relations between these places. Familiar visual landmarks were important both at the beginning and at the end of the foraging journey. A motor routine guided the ants at the start of their foraging path towards the first landmarks, which they learnt to pass consistently on the same side, before taking the next direction. At the last stage of the route, landmark recognition allowed them to pinpoint their preferred feeding site without using distant cues or odometric information. By contrast, ants en route to the goal were not systematically guided by a stereotyped sequence of snapshots recalled at each corresponding stage of the route. Each ant slalomed in an idiosyncratic distinctive way around different midway landmarks from a foraging excursion to the next, which induced a variability of the path shapes in their intermediate parts. By reducing the number of landmark recognition-triggered responses, this economical visuomotor strategy may be helpful in the Amazonian forest where many prominent landmarks are alike.  相似文献

Finite element scaling analysis is used to study differences in morphology between the craniofacial complex of normal individuals and those affected with the syndromes of Apert and Crouzon. Finite element scaling quantifies the differences in shape and size between forms without reference to any fixed, arbitrary registration point or orientation line and measures the amount of form change required to deform one object into another. Two-dimensional coordinates of landmarks digitized from annual sets of cephalometric radiographs were used in the analysis. A simple tabulation shows no difference in variances between the normal and pathological samples. A test of mean differences depicts the Apert and Crouzon morphologies as significantly different from normal. The Apert palate differs from normal in shape in the older age groups analyzed, and palatal size differences are most common at the posterior nasal spine. The Apert pituitary fossa and basi-occiput are significantly larger than normal. The Crouzon pituitary fossa is also larger than normal, but the difference is not always significant. The typical morphology of the Crouzon nose is due more to differences in shape than size. The Crouzon basi-occiput is significantly smaller than normal. An age association of the differences between the normal and pathological craniofacies was found in Apert syndrome but not in Crouzon syndrome. Apert syndrome is characterized by a more homogeneous pattern of craniofacial dysmorphology from 6 months to 18 years of age than Crouzon syndrome.  相似文献

An analysis and visualization of craniofacial shape changes due to growth or orthodontic treatment is presented. The suggested method is based on an adapted Karhunen-Loève decomposition of time-discrete data based on landmarks in lateral X-rays of the skull. It allows for a reduction of the high-dimensional dynamic problem to a few spatial modes representing synchronous components of growth patterns with time-dependent mode coefficients. The growth-related shape changes as well as the orthodontic treatment effects are visualized by overdrawing the underlying shape changes. The results based on this technique give insight into the still controversially discussed question to which degree the craniofacial skeletal structures can be influenced by orthodontic appliances.  相似文献

One way in which fish can move around efficiently is to learn and remember a spatial map of their environment. This can be a relatively simple process where, for example, sequences of landmarks are learned. However, more complex spatial representations can be generated by integrating multiple pieces of information. In this review, we consider what types of information fish use to generate a spatial map; for instance, beacons (single landmarks) that signal a specific location, or learned geometric relationships between multiple landmarks that allow fish to guide their movements. Owing to the diversity of fish species and the broad range of environments that they inhabit, there is considerable diversity in the maps that they develop and the sensory systems that they use to detect spatial information. This chapter uses a series of examples to investigate the types of spatial information that fish encode, for instance, how they map three-dimensional space, how they make use of different sensory modalities, and where this information might be processed. We also highlight the versatility of short-range orientation in fish, and discuss a number of similarities between the mapping mechanisms used by fish and terrestrial vertebrates.  相似文献

Summary Little is known about the way in which animals far from home use familiar landmarks to guide their homeward path. Desert ants, Cataglyphis spp., which forage individually over long distances are beginning to provide some answers. We find that ants running 30 m from a feeding place to their nest memorise the visual characteristics of prominent landmarks which lie close to their path. Although remembered visual features are used for identifying a landmark and for deciding whether to go to its left or right, they are not responsible for the detailed steering of an ant's path. The form of the trajectory as an ant approaches and detours around a landmark seems to be controlled by the latter's immediate retinal size; the larger it is, the greater the ant's turning velocity away from the landmark.  相似文献

Climate change is expected to disrupt biological systems. Particularly susceptible are species with temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), as in many reptiles. While the potentially devastating effect of rising mean temperatures on sex ratios in TSD species is appreciated, the consequences of increased thermal variance predicted to accompany climate change remain obscure. Surprisingly, no study has tested if the effect of thermal variance around high-temperatures (which are particularly relevant given climate change predictions) has the same or opposite effects as around lower temperatures. Here we show that sex ratios of the painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) were reversed as fluctuations increased around low and high unisexual mean-temperatures. Unexpectedly, the developmental and sexual responses around female-producing temperatures were decoupled in a more complex manner than around male-producing values. Our novel observations are not fully explained by existing ecological models of development and sex determination, and provide strong evidence that thermal fluctuations are critical for shaping the biological outcomes of climate change.  相似文献

目的分析千伏锥形束CT(KVCBCT)引导肺癌放疗人工图像配准法的重复性。方法选择16例在我院行根治性放疗的非小细胞肺癌患者,每周行KVCBCT在线引导体位校正一次,获取患者KVCBCT影像。图像配准选择肺尖和椎体作为参考标记,在矢状位、冠状位和横断位等中心层面上配准患者KVCBCT影像和计划设计cT影像。比较同一名医生相隔一周两次配准,不同医生之间配准和医生与技术员之间配准结果的差异,用于评价KVCBCT引导肺癌放疗人工图像配准法的重复性。结果同一位医生相隔一周两次配准同一幅KVCBCT影像与计划设计cT影像,配准结果在患者左右(LR)、头脚(sI)和前后(AP)三个方向上,差值大于3mm所占的比例分别为:0,13%和6%。不同医生之间的配准结果在LR、SI和AP三个方向上,差值大于3mm所占的比例分别为:11%,19%和14%。医生与技术员的配准结果在LR、SI和AP三个方向上差值大于3mm所占的比例,分别为:16%,27%和27%。结论KVCBCT引导肺癌放疗人工图像配准法的重复性有待进一步提高。尤其表现为不同医生,医生与技术员之间应用该方法的重复性较差。KVCBCT引导肺癌放疗的图像配准方法需要进一步研究。  相似文献

The aim was to investigate the effects of three anatomical frames using palpable anatomical landmarks of the knee on the net knee joint moments. The femoral epicondyles, femoral condyles, and tibial ridges were used to define the different anatomical frames and the segment end points of the distal femur and proximal tibia, which represent the origin of the tibial coordinate system. Gait data were then collected using the calibrated anatomical system technique (CAST), and the external net knee joint moments in the sagittal, coronal, and transverse planes were calculated based upon the three anatomical frames. Major components of the cardiac conduction system including the sinoatrial node (SAN), atrioventricular node (AVN), the His Bundle, and the right and left bundle branches are too small to be directly visualized by multidetector CT (MDCT) given the limited spatial resolution of current scanners. However, the related anatomic landmarks and variants of this system a well as the areas with special interest to electrophysiologists can be reliably demonstrated by MDCT. Some of these structures and landmarks include the right SAN artery, right atrial cavotricuspid isthmus, Koch triangle, AVN artery, interatrial muscle bundles, and pulmonary veins. In addition, MDCT has an imperative role in demarcating potential arrhythmogenic structures. The aim of this review will be to assess the extent at which MDCT can outline the described anatomic landmarks and therefore provide crucial information used in clinical practice.  相似文献

Territorial animals lay scent marks around their territories to broadcast their presence, but these olfactory signals can both attract and repel conspecifics. Attraction or aversion can have a profound impact in terms of space use and thereby influence an individual's access to resources and mates. Here, we test the impact of chemical signals on the long‐term space use and activity of receivers, comparing the response of males and females, territory holders, and temporary visitors in Sceloporus undulatus lizards in the field. We placed either male femoral gland secretions (chemical) or blank (control) cues on resident male landmarks, repeatedly over 5 d, while monitoring the activity and location of all lizards in the vicinity. We found that resident males and females, but not non‐resident males, were active on more days near landmarks treated with chemical cues than landmarks treated with control cues. Non‐resident males remained closer to chemical than control cues. These results suggest that territorial scent marks are attractive to conspecifics and impact space use, but that the specific effects depend on receiver sex and residency status. Such subtle or gradual changes in behavior may frequently be overlooked by short‐term choice experiments. Future studies investigating the behavioral significance of a communicative signal should consider these finer details of behavior for a more comprehensive assessment.  相似文献
