Sexual cannibalism is common among orb‐web spiders and may limit male copulation frequency. Each copulation by male St Andrew's Cross spiders (Argiope keyserlingi) involves the transfer of sperm from one pedipalp only. Almost half of the males survive their first copulation, but all of the surviving males are cannibalized when they copulate with the other pedipalp. We investigated why males cannot copulate more than twice. Experimentally fatigued males were not cannibalized more frequently than control males. Experimental removal of one pedipalp in virgin males did not increase cannibalism during their first copulation, but the surviving males were unable to copulate with a subsequent female, suggesting they cannot use a pedipalp more than once. Un‐manipulated males always inserted their unused pedipalp during their second copulation. Sperm counts from males preserved immediately after copulation and from males maintained for an additional 3 wk show that used pedipalps are not replenished over such a period.  相似文献

In Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae), when the intervals between first and second copulation are more than 24 h, only the first copulation is effective for females. Therefore, adult males should copulate only with virgin females, but not with females that copulated more than 1 day ago. Indeed, T. urticae males preferred virgin females to mated females under dual choice conditions. In the absence of virgin females, however, 60% of males copulated with mated females (n = 30). Therefore, the effects of male copulation behaviour on male and mated-female fitness were examined, respectively. Since T. urticae is arrhenotokous (i.e., only daughters have genes derived from their father), the proportion of females among the offspring was used as an index of male fitness. After males had lived with/without a mated female, the males were allowed to copulate with a virgin female. The proportion of females among the offspring did not differ between males with and without a female. On the other hand, when mated females lived with an adult male, their egg production was lower than mated females without a male. These results suggest that males do not seem to obtain fitness benefit from the copulation behaviour and that mated females incur a fitness cost due to the male behaviour.  相似文献

Research on the role of parasites in sexual selection has focusedmainly on host mate choice favoring relatively unparasitizedmales. But parasites can also generate variance in host reproductivesuccess by influencing the ability of individual hosts to directlycompete among themselves for mates or fertilizations, a subjectarea that has received far less attention. We demonstrate experimentallythat parasitism by mites can drive sexual selection by way ofa novel mechanism involving male competition: physical inhibitionof host copulation. Mite resistance in natural populations isheritable, emphasizing the evolutionary potential of parasite-mediatedsexual selection in this system and indicating that femalesshould be receiving indirect fitness benefits as a result ofthis process. We show that parasitism by mites, Macrochelessubbadius, reduces mating success of male Drosophila nigrospiracula.Smaller males were more strongly compromised, identifying hostbody size as a tolerance trait. As parasite load increased,the rate at which males attempted to copulate but failed becauseof obstruction by mites increased. When mites were removed frominfested males, host mating success was restored. Thus, thephysical presence of the mites per se generates differentialmating success, in this case by interrupting the normal flowof mating behaviors. This study elucidates a potent mechanismof parasite-mediated sexual selection in a system wherein parasiteresistance is demonstrably heritable, and as such expands ourunderstanding of the evolutionary potential of sexual selection.  相似文献

Background

Studies of animal mating systems increasingly emphasize female multiple mating and cryptic sexual selection, particularly sperm competition. Males under intense sperm competition may manipulate sperm quantity and quality through masturbation, which could waste sperm and decrease fertility. I examined the factors influencing masturbation by male Cape ground squirrels (Xerus inauris) in light of a number of functional hypotheses.

Methodology

Observational data on a marked population of squirrels were collected in east-central Namibia using scan and all-occurrences sampling.

Findings

Masturbation was far more frequent on days of female oestrus and mostly occurred after copulation. Masturbation rates were higher in dominant males, which copulate more, than in subordinates and increased with number of mates a female accepts.

Conclusions

These results suggest that masturbation in this species was not a response to sperm competition nor a sexual outlet by subordinates that did not copulate. Instead masturbation could function as a form of genital grooming. Female Cape ground squirrels mate with up to 10 males in a 3-hr oestrus, and by masturbating after copulation males could reduce the chance of infection. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can profoundly affect fertility, and their consequences for mating strategies need to be examined more fully.  相似文献

The amount of time taken to copulate varies enormously among mammals. Because copulation likely exposes animals to an increased risk of predation, and uses time and energy that could be spent on foraging, smaller mammals (which are vulnerable to more predators and have a shorter time-to-starvation than larger mammals) should spend less time copulating than do larger mammals. Furthermore, if extended copulation reflects competition among males, then the duration of mating (after correction for body size) should be greater in mammals in which females mate with more than one male. We tested these predictions using comparative data from 113 mammalian species in 85 genera, 40 families, and 14 orders, while controlling for the effect of phylogeny. We found: (1) the relationship between duration of copulation and body size to be negative, not positive; (2) no relationship with inferred multiple mating by females (based upon relative testes mass). We suggest that small mammals may find the sustained maneuvering and body positioning of copulation easier than do large mammals. Group swimming size influences metabolic energy consumption and swimming behaviour in fishes. Hydrodynamic flows and vortices of other fish are thought to be beneficial in terms of the energetic costs of swimming. Similarly, abiotic obstructions have been shown to have similar benefits with respect to metabolic consumption in swimming fish such as rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. The current study works to examine metabolic rates and swimming behaviours as a function of group swimming with bluegill sunfish Lepomis macrochirus and O. mykiss. Fishes were subjected to individual and group swimming in a respiratory swim tunnel to determine oxygen consumption as a proxy for the metabolic rate of swimming fish. In addition, fish movements within the swim tunnel test chamber were tracked to examine group swimming behaviour. We hypothesized that fish would benefit metabolically from group swimming. In the case of O. mykiss, we also hypothesized that groups would benefit from the presence of an abiotic structure, as has been previously observed in fish swimming individually. Our results suggest that the influence of group size on swimming metabolism is species specific. While L. macrochirus show decreased metabolic rate when swimming in a group compared to individually, O. mykiss did not show such a metabolic benefit from group swimming.  相似文献

Androdioecy is a mixed‐mating system in which there are males and hermaphrodites but no pure females. Few species exhibit such a mating system. Eulimnadia texana is a branchiopod crustacean that has recently been identified as an androdioecious species. This system is ideal for testing questions related to the evolution of sexual reproduction. We are testing a model that predicts androdioecy to be a stable mixed‐mating system under certain conditions. Specifically, we investigated whether encounters between males and hermaphrodites are random or if either sex seeks out the other for mating. Focal male or hermaphrodite clam shrimp were presented with stimulus shrimp of the other sex or kept alone. Swimming speed and time spent within different areas of a test chamber were recorded. Males did not alter mean swimming speed or spend more time than expected by chance near partitioned hermaphrodites. Hermaphrodites, however, decreased mean swimming speed in the presence of males and also spent more time than expected by chance near partitioned males, suggesting that hermaphrodites respond to male chemical and/or visual stimuli. Modified swimming behaviour probably facilitates inter‐sexual contact, thereby increasing opportunities for out‐crossing above that expected by random encounters.  相似文献

We investigated the function of copulation calls—vocalizations by females during mating—in captive groups of long-tailed macaques. We tested predictions of the contest-competition, sperm competition, synchronized orgasms, mate again, alpha-male notification and graded-signal hypotheses. We observed 371 copulations of 36 females wherein the presence or absence of a copulation call was clear. Females call equally often with different males and shortly after ejaculation. Copulation calls occurred equally with copulations with and without ejaculation. Calls did not incite disruptions of the mating. Following calls females mated again, more often than expected, with their mating partner. Both pregnant and fertile females uttered copulation calls. Two females conceived and mated mainly with the alpha male then. We conclude that copulation calls do not incite male contest competition for sexual access to females and that it is unlikely that calls synchronize male and female orgasms. Several hypotheses remain plausible, but not all predictions are borne out unequivocably. This alerts us to the possibility that the calls could have multiple beneficial effects; natural selection might strike a compromise among functions. Investigation of the mate again, sperm competition and alpha-male notification hypotheses, and of hypotheses not tested in our study concerning female breeding overlap and female-female agonism, is required.  相似文献

Male courtship behavior is generally thought to function prior to copulation, as an inducement to the female to allow the male to copulate with her; this study indicates however, that male courtship during and following copulation (“copulatory courtship”) is common in insects and spiders (81% of 131 species in 102 genera and 49 families, mostly Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Diptera, and Araneioidea). Copulatory courtship is apparently evolutionarily labile, as expected if it is under sexual selection; intrageneric variation occurred in all 17 genera in which more than one species was observed. In 81% of 94 species with copulatory courtship, the male abandoned the female soon after copulation ended; thus, copulatory courtship appears not to function generally to induce acceptance of further copulatory attempts. The most likely explanation for copulatory courtship is that it represents attempts by males to influence cryptic female choice. This suggests that an aspect of sexual selection by female choice not considered by Darwin may be more important than previously appreciated and that the common practice in evolutionary studies of measuring male reproductive success by counting numbers of copulations may sometimes be misleading because of cryptic female choice during and after copulation.  相似文献

Males of C. fonscolombei patrol and perch at water collection sites or at plants of Reseda, both of which are important resources for female brood care. The mating system can be classified as resource defense polygyny modified by the existence of alternative male mating tactics. Occupying temporary territories at watercollection sites constitutes the primary tactic which is more profitable for larger males. The secondary tactic of patrolling at flowers provides a nonaggressive alternative through which smaller males gain at least some mating success. Males at water collection sites occupy considerably smaller ranges but spend a higher proportion of time patrolling than males at flowers. They frequently grapple with other males, an activity that is absent at flowers. Males at water collection sites copulate about 2.5 times more frequently than males at flowers. The copulation frequency of the males at water collection sites is positively correlated with their body size, while copulation frequency is negatively correlated with body size at flowers. Males patrolling at water collection sites and males patrolling at flowers do not differ in body size, indicating that the decision between alternative mating tactics is not made relative to body size but is influenced by other factors.  相似文献

Caddisfly larvae are typically restricted to benthic microhabitats due to the presence of mobile tubular cases constructed out of mineral or organic material. Members of one family (Leptoceridae) use setae on extended metathoracic legs to swim. We describe the swimming behavior of a North American caddisfly, Triaenodes tardus, and experimentally evaluate two hypotheses proposed to explain this behavior. Triaenodes swam 1.47 cm/s, while carrying almost twice their mass in the case material. The larvae employ a stereotypic sequence of motions that likely reduce resistance during the upstroke and increases forward momentum during the downstroke. When placed on substrates of different sizes, larvae swam more on fine sediments but did not elevate off the sediment. After larvae were provided with living or artificial vegetation, the number of swimming bouts decreased compared to a pre-treatment observation period. These results indicate swimming likely does not function to facilitate movement off fine sediments, but rather, helps larvae locate and move between aquatic macrophytes which are the primary habitat of this, and other, swimming species.  相似文献

This study tested the effect of sustained swimming on growth, ingestion rate, and morphology of juvenile montezumae swordtails (Xiphophorus montezumae). Because montezumae swordtails inhabit running freshwater systems, it was expected that moderate exercise would increase feeding and growth rates, promoting also the hydrodynamic form of the fish. Experimental groups were subjected to different levels of sustained exercise by being forced to swim against water currents at four different velocities (0, 4.1, 7.8, and 12.9 cm/s). The results showed that growth-rate decrease in fish forced to swim, while the increase in exercise did not modify the ingestion rate. Thus, it is likely that the extra energy expenditure associated with the swimming cost was not compensated by an increase in food ingestion. Sustained exercise increased the fineness ratio towards a more hydrodynamic form. Morphological traits linked with minimum drag, such as caudal peduncle depth and amplitude of the caudal fin were not modified. Our results suggest that water velocity has an important role determining the physiology and, to a lesser extent, the morphology of young montezumae swordtails.  相似文献

We have shown that D. busckiimales and females, unlike other drosophilids that have been analyzed in this regard, court and copulate as well in relatively dim red light as they do in bright white light. We have also shown that males and females of this species flutter their wings during courtship and that wing fluttering in both sexes is associated with acoustic stimuli. Wingless males perform vigorous courtship but are incapable of mating, suggesting that females must perceive male song to be receptive to copulation. When they are tested with normal males, wingless females stimulate vigorous courtship, but their copulation frequencies are significantly lower than winged females. This observation suggests that perception of the female's song by either or both sexes facilitates mating.  相似文献

Swim performance is considered a main fitness‐determining trait in many aquatic organisms. Swimming is generally the only way most aquatic prey can escape predation, and swimming capacity is directly linked to food capture, habitat shifts, and reproduction. Therefore, evolutionary studies of swim performance are important to understand adaptation to aquatic environments. Most studies, however, concentrate on the importance of burst‐swim responses to predators, and little is known about its effect on endurance. Even fewer studies associate differences in organism swim capabilities to key gender‐specific responses. In this experiment, we assess the gender‐specific genetic basis of swimming endurance among four different populations of Trinidadian guppies adapted to different predation regimes. Our results show that second‐generation common‐garden females adapted to a low‐predation environment show longer swim endurance than fish adapted to a high‐predation environment. We also find an expected effect of lowered swimming endurance during pregnancy, but interestingly, it did not matter whether the females were in advanced stages of pregnancy, which severely changes body morphology, versus mid‐pregnancy. Males did not show the same trends across populations, and overall had lower swim endurances than female fish combined even when accounting for size differences. Populations recently transplanted from high‐ to low‐predation environments showed similar endurance to natural low‐predation environments in one population but not the other. This study highlights the importance of endurance in the adaptation of aquatic organisms to different predation regimes.  相似文献

We studied the courtship and copulation ofFlorinda coccinea (Hentz) and described 18 behavioral acts for this species.F. coccinea exhibits many behaviors typical of the Linyphiidae such as web reduction, abdominal vibration, palpal jabbing, stridulation, pseudocopulation, and prolonged copulation. The numbers of palpal insertions during pseudocopulation and copulation are positively correlated to the durations of these phases. Pseudocopulation requires over three times more time on average than copulation, although females copulate longer than is required for fertilization. We found no correlation between the durations of pseudocopulation or copulation and fitness characters, and we hypothesize that lengthy pseudocopulation and copulation may function as a form of internal courtship.  相似文献

Reproductive behavior of virtually all adult male rodents is dependent on concurrent availability of gonadal steroids. The ejaculatory reflex is incompatible with long-term absence of testicular steroids and typically disappears within 3 weeks after castration. Male Siberian hamsters are an exception to this rule; mating culminating in the ejaculatory reflex occurs as many as 6 months after castration (persistent copulation). The emergence of persistent copulation many weeks after gonadectomy is here shown not to require repeated post-castration sexual experience. Preoperative sexual experience, on the other hand, significantly increases the percent of males that copulate after gonadectomy, but is not required for the emergence of this trait in 25% of males. Castration prior to puberty prevents persistent copulation in all individuals in adulthood. Persistent copulators, unlike males that cease mating activity after castration, prefer the odors of estrous over non-estrous females when tested 4 months after castration and 7 weeks after the last mating test. Neural circuits of persistent copulators retain the ability to mediate male sex behavior and preferences for female odors in the complete absence of gonadal steroids; they are influenced by preoperative sexual experience and organizational effects of gonadal hormones at the time of puberty.  相似文献

The copulatory activities of bonobos (Pan paniscus) of Wamba, Zaire, were compared with those of chimpanzees (P. troglodytes schweinfurthii) of Mahale, Tanzania. The copulation rates of adult male bonobos were equal to or lower than those of adult male chimpanzees. The copulation rates of adult female bonobos were approximately equal to those of adult female chimpanzees who were in maximal genital swelling, but it should be much higher than those of the adult female chimpanzees throughout the birth interval. The copulation rates of adolescent male bonobos were lower than those of adolescent male chimpanzees, whereas the copulation rates of adolescent female bonobos were much higher than those of adolescent female chimpanzees. It was suggested that the bonobos of Wamba did not copulate more promiscuously than did the chimpanzees of Mahale. The female bonobos may show “receptivity”, whereas female chimpanzees may show rather “proceptivity”.  相似文献

Swimming performance was assessed in juvenile pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (body mass <5·0 g) using five different protocols: four constant acceleration tests each with a different acceleration profile (rates of 0·005, 0·011, 0·021 and 0·053 cm s?2) and a repeated ramped‐critical swimming speed test. Regardless of the swim protocol, the final swimming speeds did not differ significantly (P > 0·05) among swim tests and ranged from 4·54 to 5·20 body lengths s?1. This result supports the hypothesis that at an early life stage, O. gorbuscha display the same fatigue speeds independent of the swimming test utilized. Whole body and plasma [Na+] and [Cl?] measured at the conclusion of these tests were significantly elevated when compared with control values (P < 0·05) and appear to be predominantly associated with dehydration rather than net ion gain. Given this finding for a small salmonid, estimates of swim performance can be accurately measured with acceleration tests lasting <10 min, allowing a more rapid processing than is possible with a longer critical swim speed test.  相似文献

In the scorpionfly Panorpa cognata, males provide females with saliva secretions as nuptial food gifts. Consequently, females derive material benefits and possibly also genetic benefits from multiple matings. Females therefore generally should have a high motivation to remate. Males, on the other hand, do not share this interest, which will generate a sexual conflict over remating interval, possibly leading to male adaptations that prevent females from remating with other males. In this study, I found that mated females were less prone to copulate than virgin females, despite female benefits of multiple matings. Further, I found that the remating interval was significantly longer if the first copulation was long compared to shorter matings. This effect does not entirely depend on copulation duration per se, but on the amount of saliva, that a female is consuming during copulation. These results suggest a mating-induced refractory period and can be interpreted as male manipulation of female remating behaviour mediated through substances in the nuptial gift. Alternatively, receiving large nuptial gifts may decrease the prospective direct fitness benefits from further copulations, and thus change optimal female remating rate. Furthermore, gift size has been shown to correlate with male nutritional condition, which may be an indicator of male genetic quality. Females may therefore benefit indirectly by not remating following copulations involving large saliva gifts. In this scenario, female remating interval would be an effect of cryptic female choice.  相似文献

That male genital morphology evolves via postcopulatory sexual selection is a widely held view. In contrast, the precopulatory sexual selection hypothesis for genital evolution has received less attention. Here, we test the hypothesis that male genital spines of Drosophila ananassae promote competitive male copulation success. Using laser surgery to manipulate trait size, we demonstrate that incremental reductions of spine length progressively reduce male copulation success: males without spines failed entirely to copulate because of an inability to couple the genitalia together, whereas males with halfway ablated and blunted spines suffered reductions in copulation success of 87% and 13%, respectively. The decrease in copulation success resulting from spine length reduction was markedly stronger in sexually competitive environments than in noncompetitive environments, and females expressed resistance behaviors similarly toward competing male treatments, demonstrating directly the role of genital spines in promoting competitive copulation success. Because these spines are widespread within Drosophila, and because genital traits with precopulatory function are being discovered in a growing number of animal taxa, precopulatory sexual selection may have a more pervasive role in genital evolution than previously recognized.  相似文献
