Considering the variety of contradictory definitions which have been attributed to the term in the course of more than a century, one may be tempted to admit that 'Social Darwinism' can be reduced to a social myth. But it seems nevertheless necessary to answer the question: what has been called 'Social Darwinism' for more than one century and why was the expression used in a negative way to express contradictory opinions which sometimes have nothing to do with Darwin's theory. What we still call 'Social Darwinism' is the result of a misunderstanding: the theories expressed under that phrase have little to do with the Darwinian concepts of natural selection or descent with modification. They have their origin in a pre-darwinian conception of the struggle for existence, which Darwin used in a metaphorical sense. This confusion will then appear to refer clearly to the relationship we establish between biology and society, whether biological laws are directly prolonged in society, or more or less intermingle in a close network. The issue of the definition of Social Darwinism depends obviously on the possible answers to this question, and so does the issue of redefining Darwinism at large.  相似文献

The paper presents a survey of the data, obtained in laboratories, directed by the author, on the problem of the brain bases of psychics. Phenomena of perception, thinking and taking decision about behavioural response correspond to the afferent, central and efferent parts of the reflex arch. Psychic function arises on the basis of complex organization and integration of the processes in the brain. It is shown that sensation is based on the synthesis in the cortical projection area of the information on physical and signal properties of the stimulus. By means of the method developed in the laboratory, of mapping of intracortical interaction the participation is studied of different cortical zones in the process of mental creation of visual image. The process of taking decision is studied by a new method: "reaction choice potential" recorded in the case of decision, about the character of reaction to signal controlled by consciousness.  相似文献

In the future, biomass will continue to emerge as a viable source of chemicals. The development of new industries that utilize bio-renewables provides opportunities for innovation. For example, bio- and chemo-catalysts can be combined in 'one pot' to prepare chemicals of commercial value. This has been demonstrated using isolated enzymes and whole cells for a variety of chemical transformations. The one-pot approach has been successfully adopted to convert chemicals derived from biomass, and, in our opinion, it has an important role to play in the design of a more sustainable chemical industry. To implement new one-pot bio- and chemo-catalytic processes, issues of incompatibility must be overcome; the strategies for which are discussed in this opinion article.  相似文献

In the late endocytic pathway, it has been proposed that endocytosed macromolecules are delivered to a proteolytic environment by 'kiss-and-run' events or direct fusion between late endosomes and lysosomes. To test whether the fusion hypothesis accounts for delivery to lysosomes in living cells, we have used confocal microscopy to examine content mixing between lysosomes loaded with rhodamine-dextran and endosomes subsequently loaded with Oregon-Green-dextran. Both kissing and explosive fusion events were recorded. Data from cell-free content-mixing assays have suggested that fusion is initiated by tethering, which leads to formation of a trans-SNARE (soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein attachment protein receptor) protein complex and then release of lumenal Ca(2+), followed by membrane bilayer fusion. We have shown that the R-SNARE (arginine-containing SNARE) protein VAMP (vesicle-associated membrane protein) 7 is necessary for heterotypic fusion between late endosomes and lysosomes, whereas a different R-SNARE, VAMP 8 is required for homotypic fusion of late endosomes. After fusion of lysosomes with late endosomes, lysosomes are re-formed from the resultant hybrid organelles, a process requiring condensation of content and the removal/recycling of some membrane proteins.  相似文献

Profilins purified from Zea mays transiently enhance the viscosityof polymerizing cardiac actin at ratios (profilin : actin) <1,but lower the viscosity at higher ratios. Anhydrous sugars such as maltose and trehalose are useful for making dry powder of foods and liquids. The crystal-transformation rate of maltose and trehalose were investigated under humid conditions and by kneading. The enthalpy for solubilization was 7.0 kJ/mol for the anhydrous maltose. The crystal-transformation rate of anhydrous alpha-maltose to hydrous beta-maltose depended on the temperature at 75% humidity. However, that of anhydrous trehalose did not depend on the temperature, and transformation was very rapid. An anomeric change to maltose and no such change to trehalose might have caused this. The activation energy of crystal transformation was 79 kJ/mol for maltose and zero for trehalose. The rate of crystal transformation of anhydrous maltose while kneading depended on the purity of the anhydrous alpha-maltose and the amount of water present. This crystal transformation rate fitted the Avrami equation.  相似文献

The nuclear factor CTCF has been shown to be necessary for the maintenance of genetic imprinting at the mammalian H19/Igf2 locus. MacDonald and colleagues now report in BMC Biology that the mechanisms responsible for maintaining the imprinted state in Drosophila may be evolutionarily conserved and that CTCF may also play a critical role in this process.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Migrating butterflies were monitored with traps for 10 years at a site in north peninsular Florida, to determine seasonal and annual variation in numbers and directions of flight.
  • 2 In the spring, 81–96% of the principal migrants, Phoebis sennae (L.), Agraulis vanillae (L.), Precis coenia (Hübner) and Urbanus proteits (L.), flew northward; in the autumn, 86–95% flew southward.
  • 3 Estimated mean net numbers of these four species flying northward in spring across each ENE-WSW metre were 3, 6, 69 and <1 respectively; numbers flying southward in autumn were 222, 413, 37 and 146.
  • 4 During a 5-year period, the ratio of highest to lowest seasonal migration for a species did not exceed 9.3.
  • 5 The average median date of spring migration was 27 March for P.sennae, 23 April for P.coenia, and 12 May for A.vanillae. The average median date of autumn migration was 2–5 October except for U.proteus, whose average date was 14 October.
  • 6 The autumn migratory period, as measured by the duration of the middle half of migration, was about 2 weeks in P.coenia and about 4 weeks in the other three species.
  • 7 Compared to previously reported butterfly migrations, the ones studied here were notably uniform in magnitude and regular in timing.
  • 8 These and other data suggest that 4 million or more of these butterflies migrate northward from peninsular Florida almost every spring and that 40 million or more migrate southward to peninsular Florida almost every autumn.

The agouti protein regulates pigmentation in the mouse hair follicle producing a black hair with a subapical yellow band. Its effect on pigmentation is achieved by antagonizing the binding of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) to melanocortin 1 receptor (Mc1r), switching melanin synthesis from eumelanin (black/brown) to phaeomelanin (red/yellow). Dominant mutations in the non-coding region of mouse agouti cause yellow coat colour and ectopic expression also results in obesity, type 11 diabetes, increased somatic growth and tumourigenesis. At least some of these pleiotropic effects can be explained by antagonism of other members of the melanocortin receptor family by agouti protein. The yellow coat colour is the result of agouti chronically antagonizing the binding of alpha-MSH to Mc1r and the obese phenotype results from agouti protein antagonizing the binding of alpha-MSH to Mc3r and/or Mc4r. Despite the existence of a highly homologous agouti protein in humans, agouti signal protein (ASIP), its role has yet to be defined. However it is known that human ASIP is expressed at highest levels in adipose tissue where it may antagonize one of the melanocortin receptors. The conserved nature of the agouti protein combined with the diverse phenotypic effects of agouti mutations in mouse and the different expression patterns of human and mouse agouti, suggest ASIP may play a role in human energy homeostasis and possibly human pigmentation.  相似文献

Abstract. Electrophoretic analyses of haemoglobin and globin phenotypes in families of Xenopus borealis and Xenopus l. laevis revealed two developmental haemoglobin transitions during ontogeny. The first transition occurs at the developmental stage when tadpoles begin to feed. It is characterized by the decline of embryonic-specific globins in favour of novel, tadpole-specific globins ( X. borealis ) correlated to changes in the haemoglobin pattern. We suppose that this switch results from the replacement of a primitive, ventral blood island-dependent erythrocyte population by tadpole erythrocytes from other erythropoietic sites. Several other globin chains and haemoglobins are present in both young tadpoles and throughout larval life. The second, well-known transition occurs during metamorphosis, where all tadpole haemoglobins are replaced by adult haemoglobins composed of entirely different globin chains.  相似文献

A. FERNANDEZ-ASTORGA, A. FERNANDEZ DE ARANGUIZ, M. POCINO, A. UMARAN AND R. CISTERNA. 1992. The potential of the transfer of natural plasmids between sewage strains has been studied. In vitro transfer was conducted at 37°C in tryptone soya broth and sterile raw sewage as mating media. In situ transfer was carried out in sterile raw sewage within membrane diffusion chambers at 10.6°C. When the recipient was a laboratory strain of Escherichia coli K-12, the in situ frequency values were significantly lower ( P < 0.001) than those obtained in vitro for the same mating pair. When the laboratory recipient was replaced with recipients from the same sewage source, frequency values decreased progressively from the optimum conditions to the most adverse. However, in situ frequency values were higher than those for the same donors mated with a laboratory recipient.  相似文献
