Field observations in Greenland as well as arena choice experiments showed that the arctic-alpine seed bug Nysius groenlandicus (Zetterstedt) (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae) is markedly xerophilous and thermophilous, preferring temperatures around 30 °C. Some variation in thermo-preference was found among individuals from different localities in Greenland. Individuals from an inland locality (Søndre Strømfjord/Kangerlussuaq) had the highest temperature preference. Exposing individuals to rising temperature showed very high thresholds for excessive activity (ca. 41 °C), heat stupor (ca. 51 °C) and death (ca. 52 °C). All stages initially preferred the lowest humidity obtainable but gradually changed to higher humidities. The youngest nymph stages were most tolerant to desiccation. The observed preferences are interpreted as adaptations to a habitat where a warm and dry microclimate allows this obligatorily univoltine species to complete its life cycle within one year. The paper presents some general statistical approaches to analyses of behavioural responses to environmental gradients.  相似文献

Different strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were examined for their ability to produce a heat shock and a cold shock response. Strain A1, heat shocked from 20° to 35°C, acquired thermotolerance, as it showed a 1000-fold reduction in cell mortality when exposed to the supermaximum temperature of 42°C, as compared to a non-heat-shocked control. A heat shock from 25° to 35°C yielded similar results, although a higher degree of thermotolerance was achieved for the shorter exposure times. Cultures heat shocked for 5 h showed a five-log reduction in viable counts after 41 h at 42°C, whereas non-heat-shocked cultures showed a similar reduction in viability in 28 h. Conferred thermotolerance was immediate and sustained for the duration of the exposure to 42°C. Heat-shocked cultures were not significantly protected against loss of viability due to freezing (-15°C for 24 h). Strain S2, cold shocked from 25° to 10°C, and strain D6, cold shocked from 25° to 5°C, were not protected against freezing at-15°C. An analysis of proteins extracted from heat-shocked cells of strain A1 showed the presence of at least one newly induced protein and eight hyper-induced proteins. The molecular weights of the heat shock proteins were in the range of 15–80.3 kDa.  相似文献

Summary The competitive ability of the pollen of wild tomato species (Solanum pennellii, Lycopersicum hirsutum and L. minutum) and a cultivar of tomato to affect fertilization at low temperature was investigated. Pollen grains of wild species were mixed with those of the cultivar and pollinated onto the stigma of the cultivar. The number of seedlings resembling the wild species, excluding L. minutum, were significantly higher when the plants were maintained at a low temperature (8°–12° C) than when they were maintained at a normal temperature (22°–28° C). This indicates that the pollen of S. pennellii and L. hirsutum wild species can compete better with pollen of the cultivar at a low temperature, while there was no change in the competitive ability of L. minutum pollen under these conditions.  相似文献

The daily activity and energy metabolism of pouched mice (Saccostomus campestris) from two localities in southern Africa was examined following warm (25 °C) and cold (10 °C) acclimation under long (LD 14:10) and short (LD 10:14) photoperiol. There was no differential effect of photoperiod on the daily activity or metabolism of pouched mice from the two localities examined, which suggests that reported differences in photoresponsivity between these two populations were not the result of differences in daily organisation. Neverthe-less, there was a significant increase in metabolism at 10 °C, irrespective of photoperiod, even though seven cold-acclimated animals displayed bouts of spontaneous torpor and saved 16.4–36.2% of their daily energy expenditure. All but one of these bouts occurred under short photoperiod, which suggests that short photoperiod facilitated the expression of torpor and influenced the daily energy metabolism of these individuals. As expected for a noctureal species, the amount of time spent active increased following acclimation to short photoperiod at 25 °C. However, there was a reduction in mean activity levels under short photoperiod at 10 °C, possibly because the stimulation of activity by short photoperiod was masked by a reduction in activity during bouts of spontaneous torpor. Eight populations of Laminaria hyperborea from wave-exposed localities in Finnmark (70–71°N) were compared with two populations in Vega (65°N). Standing stock in shallow water (3–5 m) was within the same range in the two areas (6–16 kg fr. wt. m–2). Both the highest and lowest value of standing stock were registered in Finnmark. Degree of wave-exposure was determined by the numbers of sectors exposed to open sea at each locality, with each sector given a relative wind force value. The most wave-exposed locality in Vega had a slightly higher annual biomass production as a function of plant age compared with the populations from Finnmark within a similar range of wave exposure. Of the two localities in Vega the most wave-exposed one had a higher annual biomass production per plant than the more sheltered one. The most wave-exposed locality examined was situated in Finnmark and exhibited the lowest annual biomass production per plant. Recruits (one-year-old plants) were found at all the localities except at one locality in Finnmark. The plants reached a higher age in Finnmark (13–18 years) than in Vega (8–9 years).  相似文献

Summary This study reports the first use of gaspermeable, heat-sealable polyethylene bags for cold storage of plant tissue cultures. The bags were used to develop a new cold storage system for the in vitro strawberry collection at the National Clonal Germplasm Repository (NCGR), Corvallis. In vitro Fragaria plantlets of 96 different accessions (species and cultivars) were transferred to bags with basal medium without growth regulators, heat-sealed, grown for one week at 25°C, cold hardened for one week, and then stored in the dark at 4°C. These in vitro cultures were successfully stored for up to 24 months in polyethylene bags. Evaluations at three month intervals provided information on the condition of the diverse collection. Over 75% of the accessions originally stored remained in storage for 15 months and 47% remained for over 18 months. None of the 96 accessions studied was lost due to contamination or decline in vigor. Many freshwater zooplankton species perform a diel vertical migration (DVM) and spend the day within the lower, colder hypolimnion of stratified lakes. Trade-offs that arise from this migration have already attracted much attention and the cold temperature in the hypolimnion is thought to be the main cost of this behaviour. In this study we additionally looked at the extra costs daphnids have from being exposed to a fluctuating temperature regime (cold during the day and warm during the night) which is less well studied until today. In our experiment Daphnia hyalina Leydig and Daphnia magna Straus either spent 24 h in constant warm water (19 °C), 24 h in constant cold water (12 °C), or spent 12 h in warm and 12 h in cold water in an alternating way (fluctuating temperature regime). We expected the values of the life history parameters of Daphnia in the fluctuating temperature regime to be exactly halfway between the values of the life history parameters in the warm and cold treatments because the daphnids spent exactly half of the time in warm water, and half of the time in cold water. Concordant with earlier studies our results showed that age at first reproduction and egg development time were reduced at higher temperatures. In the fluctuating temperature regime the values of both parameters were exactly halfway between the values at permanently warm and cold temperature regimes. In contrast, somatic growth was higher at higher temperatures but was lower in the fluctuating temperature regime than expected from the mean somatic growth rate. This suggests that a fluctuating temperature regime experienced by migrating daphnids in stratified lakes involves additional costs for the daphnids.  相似文献

The potential of barley and wheat microsatellite markers for genetic analysis of Elymus trachycaulus complex species was evaluated. A set of 25 barley and 3 wheat microsatellite markers were tested for their ability to cross-amplify DNA from four accessions of E. trachycaulus and two accessions Pseudoroegneria spicata. Thirteen barley (52%) and two (68%) wheat primer pairs successfully amplified consistent products from both E. trachycaulus and P. spicata species. Four of the 15 successful primer pairs produced visible polymorphisms among the accessions tested. A higher successful rate of cross-species amplification of barley and wheat microsatellite markers in E. trachycaulus and P. spicata was found in this study. These primer pairs are now available for use as markers in genetic analysis of E. trachycaulus complex species. Our results suggest that publicly available wheat and barley microsatellite markers are a valuable resource for the genetic characterization of wild Triticeae species.  相似文献

Summary Djungarian hamsters,Phodopus sungorus (31.1 g body weight) were exposed to ambient temperatures (T a ) between –35°C and +34°C. They tolerated severe cold stress but were less able to withstand heat. At –35° CT a , normal body temperature was maintained for several hours. Thereby maximum thermal insulation was calculated at 1.1 g·°C/mW, which is only slightly higher than expected from the hamsters body size. High levels of heat production (60 to 90 m W/g) were maintained for several hours, suggesting that well developed means of heat production are the main reason for cold tolerance of the Djungarian hamster.  相似文献

Sphaceloma poinsettiae, a scab-causing fungus that attacks wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla) was evaluated as a mycoherbicide. Plants representing nine different E. heterophylla accessions were tested and variable resistance levels to 10 different isolates of S. poinsettiae were observed. One isolate was selected based on its high aggressiveness; it caused scab that led to stem-girdling in the majority of plants belonging to most wild poinsettia accessions. Plants inoculated with conidial suspension developed low disease severity; suspensions of mycelial fragments caused higher disease severity. Viability of mycelium declined rapidly either in storage under room temperature or at 4 °C. After 25 days, 60% of mycelial fragments kept in distilled water at 4 °C or in 35% sterile sucrose solution germinated. Cultures of S. poinsettiae were capable of growing at temperatures ranging from 10 to 30 °C (maximum growth at 25 °C) whereas the mycelial fragments germinated at 20–30 °C. The highest mycelial yield occurred in potato-dextrose broth after culturing for 12 days at 168 rpm at room temperature. A host-range test involving 37 plant species in addition to wild poinsettia indicated that S. poinsettiae is highly specific to E. heterophylla. The viability of S. poinsettiae as a mycoherbicide depends on the development of suitable mass production, formulation, and inoculum preservation methods. On several occasions, this fungus has been observed to cause devastating epidemics in the field on this host; therefore, it should be considered a potential biocontrol agent of wild poinsettia.  相似文献

Shoots and roots of wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cold-resistant species) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L., cold-sensitive species) were chilled at 2°C or 10°C, respectively, for 7 h. The changes in cold, heat, and salt resistance in treated leaf and root cells were recorded. Local cooling of the leaf resulted in an increase of its cold and salt tolerance, but its heat tolerance remained unchanged. At the same time, cold tolerance of the root slightly increased as a result of local cooling, but its heat and salt tolerance decreased. Cooling of the shoot did not affect the cold and heat tolerance of root cells but caused a decrease in their salt tolerance. Finally, in the leaf maintained at a normal temperature, there was an increase in all kinds of stress resistance as a result of root cooling. We discuss the possibility of an unspecific change in stress resistance caused by metabolic shifts. These shifts are induced by a signal, which is transmitted inside the plant into plant organs located at a considerable distance from the chilled ones.  相似文献

Poecilobdella viridis was used to study the variations in the biochemical parameters: body protein, glycogen and water, following warm (32.0° ± 0.5°C) and cold (10.0° ± 0.5°C) acclimation for 5, 10, 15 and 30 days. The percentage of glycogen decreased significantly (p < 0.05) during both warm and cold acclimation whereas the protein percentage increased significantly (p < 0.05). The percentage of water was significantly (p < 0.05). reduced during both acclimation processes. Ecophysiological significance of these alterations to leeches, in counteracting the ambient thermal fluxes, has been briefly discussed.  相似文献

Heat production by means of oxygen consumptionVo2 (at Ta = 6° C, 25° C, 30° C, and 32° C) and non-shivering thermogenesis (NST) were studied in individuals of a diurnal rodent (Rhabdomys pumilio) and a nocturnal rodent (Praomys natalensis). The studied mice were acclimated to cold at Ta=8°C with a photoperiod of LD 12:12. On the otherhand specimens of these two species were acclimated at Ta=25°C with a long scotophase LD8:16. The results were compared with a control group (Ta=25° C, LD 12:12) and winter acclimatized individuals of both species.Vo2 in cold acclimated mice of both species was significantly increased when compared to the control group and was even higher than the winter acclimatized group when measured below the lower critical temperature. Long scotophase acclimated mice of both species also increased their oxygen consumption significantly when compared to the control group. NST was significantly increased in long scotophase acclimated mice from both species when compared to the control group. The results of this study indicate that the effects of acclimation to long scotophase are similar to those of cold acclimation. As changes in photoperiod are regular, it may be assumed that heat production mechanisms in acclimatization to winter will respond to changes in photoperiodicity.Present address: University of Haifa, Oranim, P.O. Regulation of genetic variation in natural populations is a problem of primary importance to evolutionary biology. In the reported study, the repair efficiency of double strand DNA breaks was compared in six wild barley accessions from Israeli natural populations of H. spontaneum: three from mesic populations (one from Maalot and two from Mount Meron, Upper Galilee) and three from xeric populations (one from Wadi Quilt in the Judean Desert and two from Sede Boqer, in the northern Negev Desert). Pulsed field gel electrophoresis was used to score double-strand breaks of DNA (DSBs) caused by methyl methanesulphonate (MMS) treatment. All six accessions were also tested for heat tolerance: four of these, three xeric and one mesic (from Maalot population), were scored as heat tolerant whereas both accessions from Mount Meron population displayed heat sensitivity. MMS caused a significant increase in the level of DSBs relative to the control in all accessions. The major questions were whether and how the efficiency of DNA repair after mutagenic treatment is affected by the environmental conditions and accession’s adaptation to these conditions. Differences were found among the accessions in the repair pattern. Plants of two out of the four heat tolerant accessions did not manage to repair DNA neither at 25°C nor at 37°C. The remaining two heat tolerant accessions significantly repaired the breaks at 37°C, but not at 25°C. By contrast, plants of the two heat susceptible accessions significantly lowered the level of DSBs at 25°C but not at 37°C. Therefore, the accessions that proved capable to repair the induced damages in DNA at one of the two temperatures displayed a pattern that may imply the existence of a negative feedback mechanism in regulation of genetic variation. Such a dependence of DNA integrity on environment and genotype may serve an important factor for maintaining relatively high level of mutability without increasing the genetic load.  相似文献

Capacities and effects of cold or warm acclimation were investigated in two zoarcid species from the North Sea (Zoarces viviparus) and the Antarctic (Pachycara brachycephalum) by investigating temperature dependent mitochondrial respiration and activities of citrate synthase (CS) and NADP+ -dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) in the liver. Antarctic eelpout were acclimated to 5°C and 0°C (controls) for at least 10 months, whereas boreal eelpout, Z. viviparus (North Sea) were acclimated to 5°C and to 10°C (controls). Liver sizes were found to be increased in both species in the cold, with a concomitant rise in liver mitochondrial protein content. As a result, total liver state III rates were elevated in both cold-versus and warm-exposed P. brachycephalum and Z. viviparus, with the highest rates in boreal eelpout acclimated to 5°C. CS and IDH activities in the total liver were similar in Z. viviparus acclimated to 5°C and 10°C, but decreased in those warm acclimated versus control P. brachycephalum. Enzyme capacities in the total liver were higher in eelpout from Antarctica than those from the North Sea. In conclusion, cold compensation of aerobic capacities in the liver seems to be linked to an increase in organ size with unchanged specific mitochondrial protein content. Despite its life in permanently cold climate, P. brachycephalum was able to reduce liver aerobic capacities in warm climate and thus, displayed a capacity for temperature acclimation.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of two types of clothing, leaving legs covered or uncovered, on seasonal cold tolerance in women. Experiments were carried out to compare cold tolerance at an ambient temperature (T a) of 10° C in December between two groups of subjects, who wore either knee-length skirts (skirt group) or full-length trousers (trouser group) for 3 months from September to November. The main results are summarized as follows: rectal temperatures continued to fall for 40 min in the trouser group when the subjects were covered by a blanket, while it became stable in 30 min in the skirt group; rectal temperatures showed greater increases in the skirt group when the blanket was removed after 40 min exposure to T a of 10° C; metabolic heat production was kept significantly lower in the skirt group when uncovered or covered by a blanket at T a of 10° C; metabolic heat production was negatively correlated with mean skin temperature and was always higher in the trouser group when measured at the same mean skin temperature; in the uncovered condition diastolic blood pressure increased significantly in the trouser group but not in the skirt group. These results would suggest that the subjects who wore skirts for 3 months from September to November had improved their ability to tolerate the cold.  相似文献

The variation in length of the intergenic spacer (IGS) region of the ribosomal DNA repeat unit was examined in 63 accessions of wild barley, Hordeum spontaneum, and seven accessions of cultivated barley, Hordeum vulgare. The accessions of wild barley were collected from ecologically diverse climatic and edaphic microsites in Israel, and the barley cultivars were those grown in India. Sixteen spacer-length variants (slvs) observed in the present study presumably belonged to two known rDNA loci (Rrn1 and Rrn2). Each accession had one or more variants, which together represented the rDNA phenotype. The rDNA phenotypes of wild barley accessions were widely diverse and differed substantially from those of cultivated barley. The slv phenotypes and the corresponding alleles were shown to be largely correlated with different climatic, edaphic and ecogeographical microsites and niches (the ”Evolution Canyon” at Lower Nahal Oren, Mount Carmel; and Tabigha, Eastern Upper Galilee Mountains), so that a particular rDNA phenotype of an accession could be used to predict the climate and soil to which the accession belonged. This sharp microsite ecogeographic variation in ribosomal DNA appears adaptive in nature, and is presumably driven by climatic and edaphic natural selection. Tropical guppies, Poecilia reticulata, collected from the canal of La Laguna Los Patos were acclimated over a four-week period at local water temperatures of 24–33 °C to determine their critical thermal maxima (CTM) and death points (DP), as criteria of thermal tolerance. In addition, individual thermal tolerance times at a lethal temperature of 38.5 °C were measured over 12 days for upward acclimation from 24 to 30 °C and over 16 days for downward acclimation from 30 to 24 °C to determine acclimation rate just before and after changing the acclimation temperatures. The CTM ranged from 38.95 to 40.61 °C and the average DP varied from 41.22 to 42.86 °C. Positive relationships were apparent between thermal tolerance and acclimation temperatures, and thus heat tolerance criteria (CTM and DP) were significantly different among acclimation temperatures. Individual heat tolerance times increased most rapidly during the first 6 hours of upward acclimation after transfer from 24 to 30 °C, continued to increase another 5 days and fluctuated after initial acclimation was completed. The heat tolerance times of fish transferred from 30 to 24 °C declined steadily over times, reaching a minimum at 14–16 days after transfer.  相似文献

The effects of three soil temperatures on growth of spring barleys (Hordeum vulgare L.) and on their root colonization by vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi from agricultural soils in Montana (USA) or Syria at different inoculum concentrations were tested in soil incubators in the greenhouse. The number of mycorrhizal plants as well as the proportion and intensity of roots colonized increased with higher soil temperatures. VAM fungi from Montana, primarily Glomus macrocarpum, were cold tolerant at 11°C while those from Syria, primarily G. hoi, were heat tolerant at 26°C. Inoculum potential of Montana VAM fungi was higher than Syrian VAM fungi in cool soils.
