Ormia depleta(Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tachinidae), native to Brazil, is a parasitoid of someScapteriscusspecies (Orthoptera: Gryllotalpidae). It was first cultured in a laboratory in Florida in 1987. Releases ofO. depletawere made againstScapteriscusmole crickets in all regions of Florida beginning in 1988. Establishment of populations was achieved at some, but not all, of the release sites. The two earliest-established populations were monitored using traps employing synthetic calling song of maleScapteriscusmole crickets, to which gravid female flies are attracted. Additionally, progeny of the released flies were trapped between 1988 and 1993 in 32 peninsular counties, including 15 counties in which no releases had been made. The most parsimonious explanation of the pathways of spread of the current population was inferred from trapping surveys, and this yielded the probable year of colonization for peninsular counties. Reports in successive years by golf course superintendents of damage by mole crickets showed that counties withO. depletapopulations had significantly less damage than did yet-uncolonized counties.  相似文献

Females of ormiine tachinids fly to their hosts' calling songs and deposit larvae on the host or nearby. Two species,Ormia ochracea (Bigot) andO. depleta (Wiedemann), were reared for at least 8 generations, making them the first ormiines to be laboratory-propagated. Both were reared on natural hosts:Gryllus spp. field crickets (principallyG. rubens) forO. ochracea, andScapteriscus spp. mole crickets forO. depleta. Commercially rearedAcheta domesticus tested as hosts were less satisfactory. Hosts were parasitized manually or by confinement with flies or planidia (infective larvae). Transparent, cylindrical, sleeved cages were designed to accommodate parasitized hosts and pupae and adults ofO. ochracea. Cages were joined to allowO. ochracea to cycle through its stages with minimum handling and care. Parasitized hosts and pupae ofO. depleta were held in containers of damp sand; adults were held in cages developed forO. ochracea. Adults of both species were maintained on applesauce, sugar cubes, powdered milk, and water. The life cycle ofO. ochracea was about 31 days and ofO. depleta about 36 days, with the principal difference being the time required for planidia to complete development. InO. ochracea the adults emerged synchronously but inO. depleta males preceded females. In both species sex ratio was generally I: 1 and females lived slightly longer than males.O. depleta from our laboratory colony have been released for biological control of mole crickets.   相似文献

Carbohydrates and protein comprise two of the major macronutrients and many animals regulate their dietary intake of both. In the field, the carbohydrate (C) to protein (P) intake of Mormon crickets Anabrus simplex Haldeman (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) is indicative of a nutritional imbalance affecting both migration and immunity. In the present study, dietary choice experiments in the laboratory are used to investigate the preferences of Mormon cricket nymphs and adults for C and P. Diets of differing C : P ratios and amounts are presented in pairs to permit Mormon crickets to reach an intake target of C : P from four unique starting points. After the last pair of diets is removed, phenoloxidase (PO) and anti‐bacterial activity are assayed. Both males and females at the adult and nymphal stages show a strong preference for the diet richest in macronutrients, with an equal preference for C or P. When given a choice between a high C diet or a high P diet, Mormon crickets select both at random, balancing their daily intake of C and P. Weight gain is dependent on the mass of P consumed, with a conversion factor greater than four times that of C consumed. As predicted, Mormon cricket nymphs and adults that consume more P have higher titres of total phenoloxidase and, in addition, lysozyme‐like anti‐bacterial activity is independent of dietary treatment. In nature, omnivores might consume an excess of one macronutrient because they often find the other through active searching of their local habitat. However, environmental change and interspecific or intraspecific competition can challenge the ability of an organism to encounter the required nutrients on a local scale, contributing to long‐distance migratory behaviours.  相似文献

Ormia depleta(Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tachinidae), a South American fly that homes on the calling songs of its hosts, was brought from Piracicaba, Brazil; colonized; and released in Florida for the biological control ofScapteriscusspp. mole crickets. It became established at some release sites and rapidly spread through most of peninsular Florida. The seasonal distributions of phonotactic females in Florida differed from the single summer peak recorded at Rio Claro and Piracicaba, Brazil (23° S). Near Bradenton (27° N), spring and fall peaks with a summer hiatus were quickly established and remain evident. At two sites near Gainesville (30° N), a strong fall peak and a modest-to-none spring peak developed. Peaks of phonotactic females seem to follow times of peak host availability and sometimes coincide with minima of host availability. Limits to geographical expansion ofO. depletaare poorly understood. At Gainesville, the site of earliest introduction, establishment was rapid and soundtrap catches increased for the first 3 years, exceeding 1000 per year at one site. Catches then declined for 3 years, almost reaching zero in 1994. On the other hand, annual sound-trap catches ofO. depletaat Bradenton exceeded 1000 in <2 years and have remained above that level for 5 years. Winters in Gainesville are more severe than those in Bradenton, but minimum winter temperatures in Gainesville were substantially lower duringO. depleta's increase than during its decline. Perhaps mild winters cause the flies to become active early—only to starve for lack of adequate winter nectar sources.O. depletamay yet spread to the northern limits of itsScapteriscushosts as present populations adapt to new environments. Or farther spread may require that new strains be introduced from more southerly sites in South America.  相似文献

In the southeastern United States, South American Scapteriscus mole crickets are serious pests of turf and pasture grasses and vegetable seedlings. The larval stage of Pheropsophus aequinoctialis L. is a specialist predator of Scapteriscus mole cricket eggs and is currently under evaluation as a potential biological control agent. The objective of this study was to understand the oviposition behavior of P. aequinoctialis. The results indicated that in two-choice substrate oviposition arenas, female P. aequinoctialis significantly preferred to lay eggs in sand with mole cricket tunnels compared with artificially created tunnels or sand without tunnels. Physical tunnel presence influenced oviposition depth, but was not the only factor influencing oviposition. The reproductive strategy and behavior of P. aequinoctialis is discussed in relation to its specialized life history and to other carabid beetles displaying close host associations.  相似文献

Effects of a juvenile hormone analog, pyriproxyfen, on various developmental stadia of the apterous form of the turnip aphid, Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach), were bioassayed at three concentrations (50, 100, and 150 mg [AI]/l) in the laboratory. Supernumerary-molted nymphs with 1-3 extra molts were found when the first three nymphal instars were treated, and all these nymphs died prematurely. In contrast, all treated fourth instar nymphs molted normally to adults. The longevity of all pyriproxyfen-treated L. erysimi nymphs and adults and the fecundity of treated adults were reduced by 50%. Higher concentrations of pyriproxyfen (100 and 150 mg [AI]/l) caused sterility in adults from treated fourth instars; whereas the lowest concentration (50 mg [AI]/l) did not cause any adult sterility. A majority of adults from treated fourth instars and treated adults produced normal nymphs, and some adults produced dead nymphs with normal appendages or dead and deformed nymphs without any appendages. Normal nymphs produced by the adults from treated adults or treated at fourth instars developed more slowly from first instar to adult than the water-treated nymphs, and all adults in the new generation apparently reproduced normally. The potential role of pyriproxyfen in a vegetable aphid IPM program was discussed.  相似文献

Application of powder diets may promote development of the predator Geocoris ochropterus (Fieber) when densities are low in greenhouses or fields. Development and nymphal survival ratio of G. ochropterus fed on different powder diets including silkworm pupae (A), crickets (B), silkworm pupae and sunflower seed (C) and crickets and sunflower seed (D) were examined. Total average development period was 30.14 days for instars fed on silkworm pupae, 34.43 days for instars fed on crickets, 26.28 days for instars fed on silkworm pupae and sunflower seed and 29.67 days for instars fed on crickets and sunflower seed, and they were significantly different. Head width, body length, forewing length, dry body weight of adults and sex ratio were not affected by the different diets. There were significantly different found in survival rates among the diets when the nymph reached 5th instar. Results indicate that the combination powder of silkworm pupae and sunflower seed will promise as an alternative diet in the greenhouses to maintain the population of G. ochropterus.  相似文献

The parasitoidEphedrus cerasicola Starý oviposited in all 4 nymphal instars and in newly moulted adults ofMyzus persicae (Sulzer). The different host categories were offered with no choice. The duration of an oviposition increased with the age of nymphs, being about 13, 18, 21, 22, and 17 s from 1 st instars to adults, respectively. Observations of number of stabbing attacks prior to oviposition, percent of the encounters not resulting in oviposition, time from first encounter to oviposition, handling time and aphid defensive behaviour also indicated that 1 st instarM. persicae are most easily parasitized. The behaviour ofE. cerasicola in encounters with unparasitized and parasitized hosts, suggested that the parasitoid could discriminate. In encounters with parasitized 1 st to 4th instar aphids,E. cerasicola used only the antennae in 80% of the encounters that resulted in discrimination.  相似文献

1. A possible adaptive benefit of coprophagy was investigated in nymphs of the German cockroach Blattella germanica (L.). 2. Newly ecdysed first instars, given no source of food other than conspecific faeces, survived significantly longer than first instars deprived of faeces. The faeces of adult males and females may be of different quality, however, because nymphs given female faeces were more likely to moult into the second stadium than nymphs given male faeces. 3. In contrast to first instars, second instars provided adult faeces survived only slightly longer than starved counterparts. Faecal feeding is therefore stage‐specific, as is the benefit derived from it. 4. The relationship between the nutrient composition of faeces and the survival of nymphs was also examined. First instars fed the faeces of adults that had been maintained on a high (50%) protein diet, died more slowly than first instars fed the faeces of adults that had been maintained on medium (22.5%) and low (5%) protein diets. Chemical analysis of faeces showed that the concentration of protein in adult faeces increased with the level of protein in the diet. Moreover, food choice assays showed that first instars, unlike adults, ingested more of the high‐protein diets. 5. These data support the idea that coprophagy is a stage‐specific adaptive behaviour that permits first instars to moult into the second stadium with minimal foraging.  相似文献

Abstract: Biological control provides an environmentally harmonious and potentially stable management tactic to combat noxious pests such as Bemisia tabaci, notorious for its resistance to synthetic pesticides. Bioassays conducted under control chamber conditions integrating applications of the parasitoid Encarsia formosa, reared for 20 years on Trialeurodes vaporariorum, and the fungus Verticillium lecanii on the third‐fourth instar nymphs of B. tabaci on tomato, showed a comparable effect between the parasitoid‐fungus combined treatment and the fungus treatment alone (70.7% vs. 70.4%). Analysis of our results indicates antagonism between the two biocontrol agents related to the parasitoids’ ability to discriminate between infected and healthy B. tabaci nymphs. The parasitoid treatment alone produced 36.3% mortality, with no mortality in the distilled water controls. The behavioural performance of the parasitoid could have either genetic or environmental causes. Bioassays studying the feeding habit of the imported mirid predator Macrolophus caliginosus (adults) and the indigenous mirid Camptotylus reuteri (nymphs and adults) on eggs, or early second instar nymphs of B. tabaci, and choice preference tests indicated a significant difference in feeding between M. caliginosus and C. reuteri. There was no significant difference in percentage feeding of M. caliginosus on eggs (2.2%) or second instar nymphs (8.0%). There was a significant difference in feeding of M. caliginosus adults (18.6%) when offered eggs and second instars in the same arena compared with eggs or second instars offered separately. These results could be attributed to the biological behaviour of the predator having a type III functional response. Studies with the local C. reuteri species showed no significant difference in adult and nymphal consumption on second instars of B. tabaci compared with nymphs on eggs. However, C. reuteri adults fed less on eggs compared with nymphs. This local predatory species appears to be more efficient than M. caliginosus in feeding on particular stages of B. tabaci without depending on prey density. This is further supported by the low consumption of both adults and nymphs in the choice test (4% and 2.3%, respectively) compared with M. caliginosus adults (18.6%).  相似文献

Behavioural responses of nymphs and adults in the gregarious phase of the desert locust,Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal) (Orthoptera: Acrididae) were investigated in a single-chamber bioassay system to a choice of two columns of air, one permeated with airborne volatiles emanating from either sex of nymphs or adults and the other untreated. There was no sexual differentiation in the production of or response to nymphal volatiles. Young adults of either sex did not produce a stimulus with significant activity. Of the older adults, only the males produced the aggregation stimulus to which both sexes were equally responsive. Charcoal-trapped volatiles from the two sexes of nymphs and adults evoked similar aggregation responses. Antennae of the older adults showed significantly higher EAG responses than those of fifth instar nymphs to all four volatile collections, of which volatiles from older adult males were the most stimulatory and evoked the highest EAG amplitudes.  相似文献

Prosopis spp. areintroduced rangeland weeds in Australia. In asearch for biological control agents, thepsyllid Heteropsylla texana, which causessevere distortion to growing leaf and floralshoots, was imported from Texas, USA forhost range testing in quarantine facilities.No-choice tests were conducted on 60 plantspecies including P. pallida, P. velutinaand P. juliflora. In these trials, adultssurvived on 45 non-target plants but ovipositedonly on the Prosopis spp., Dichrostachys spicata and Acaciabidwillii. Nymphs developed to ovipositingadults on all Prosopis spp. and both D. spicata and A. bidwillii. Developmentof small numbers of adults on D. spicataand A. bidwillii occurred for only onegeneration. Damage was noticed only on Prosopis spp. In multiple-choice trials usingthree plant species, oviposition and subsequentdevelopment of eggs and nymphs to adults tookplace on P. pallida and D. spicatabut not on A. bidwillii. The low numbersdeveloping, the longer development times toadults when reared on D. spicata and A.bidwillii, and the failure of these plantsto sustain populations beyond one generationindicate that these plants are not hosts ofH. texana. While adult survival on manytest plants may imply that adult feedingoccurred, the risk to populations of theseplants in the field is negligible. It wasconcluded that H. texana is specific toProsopis spp. and could be released inAustralia for control of Prosopis spp.Observations of the biology of this speciesmade during the course of rearing andexperimentation indicated that nymphs developedthrough five instars to adults in 7–8 days sothat total development from egg to adult takes13–17 days. Females produce up to 100 eggs.  相似文献

With the purpose of studying the feeding behavior of the brown citrus aphid pest, Toxoptera citricida (Kirkaldy) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), we compared stylet probing behaviors of third and fourth instars and adults on Citrus unshiu Marc (Rutaceae) seedlings using the electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique. EPG waveforms exhibited the full suite of stylet behaviors – stylet pathway, intracellular stylet puncture, phloem salivation (E1), sieve ingestion (E2), and xylem sap ingestion activities, plus the non‐penetration (Np) waveform. Before the phloem phase, the number of probes was significantly higher for third‐instar nymphs than for adults. Overall duration of Np events by adults was significantly lower than the duration of third and fourth instars. The number of short probes of the fourth instars was significantly higher than that of the adults. In the phloem phase, adults made more frequent and longer E1 events than the third and fourth instars. Third instars made more frequent but shorter E2 events, whereas adults made fewer but longer events. These results showed adults gained nutrients by increasing feeding time during phloem ingestion. Thus, the probability of phloem‐associated virus acquisition and transmission of T. citricida was higher in adults than in nymphs.  相似文献

Aleurothrixus floccosus (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) first invaded eastern urban areas of Athens, Greece, in May 1991. At Zographou, Athens, in 1992–1994, most overwinteringA. floccosus nymphs were of the 3rd and 4th instars, and pupae; during other periods of the year, all developmental instars were found, at fluctuating rates. In 1993, peaks in the numbers of eggs laid coinciding with sharp increases in percentage of 1st instar nymphs found permitted the distinction of 6 overlapping generations. High densities ofA. floccosus infesting citrus in autumn 1992, in the range of 9.1–10.9 nymphs/cm2 leaf surface, were brought under control by autumn 1993, with maximum densities of 1.1–1.7 nymphs/cm2. This reduction is attributed mostly to the action of the introduced parasitoidCales noacki (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), released 3 km from Zographou in 1992 and at Zographou itself in 1993. No indigenous parasitoid was ever found parasitizingA. floccosus. The first record ofClitostethus arcuatus (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Greece is reported. In summer 1992, eggs larvae and adults ofC. arcuatus were noticed on citrus leaves infested withA. floccosus at Zographou. From 1992 to 1994, the adults were often detected in field samplings and on yellow sticky traps. C. arcuatus adults and larvae were successfully reared, under optimal laboratory conditions, on eggs and early-instar nymphs ofA. floccosus and on eggs ofAnagasta kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), but the adults did not reproduce.  相似文献

Nabis roseipennis Reuter nymphs demonstrated a preference for nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) — infected over healthyAnticarsia gemmatalis Hübner larvae when offered a choice of larval prey in Petri dishes and on soybean. In Petri dishes, small (second-third instar) and large (fifth-sixth instar) nymphs attacked a significantly greater number of diseased than healthy larvae at all larval instars tested (first-fifth instars) and exposure periods (2, 5 and 24 h), except that at 2 h the number of 1st and 3rd instar larvae attacked by large nymphs did not differ significantly (P≤0.05). Nabis roseipennis caged with larvae on individual soybean plants in the greenhouse resulted in a generally low percentage of attack by small and large nymphs after 2 days, ranging from 5.6 to 36.7%. As in the Petri dishes, the nabids showed a significant preference for diseased larvae over healthy larvae attacked for all nabid and larval sizes on soybean, with the percentage of diseased larvae attacked ranging from 28.0 to 65.4% (P≤0.05). This preference for diseased larvae on soybean as well as in Petri dishes demonstrates that the preference was not due to the close proximity in which the host and prey were found in the Petri dishes. The preference for diseased larvae may be due to a reduction in a defensive response in late stages of disease. This material is based upon work supported in part by USDA Grant No. 83-CRCR-1-1212.  相似文献

Euphasiopteryx depleta (Wied) flies successfully developed in the mole cricketsScapteriscus borellii Giglio-Tos andScapteriscus vicinus Scudder, as well as in the short-tailed cricket,Anurogryllus sp., after artificially placing larvae under their pronota. Using this technique, no relation was found between the number of larvae placed on each cricket and the resulting number of puparia obtained from the cricket. In all cases, the number of flies emerging from the puparia was small, with females failing to mature reproductively. AsE. depleta has been reared from field collectedScapteriscus spp., the exact reasons for lack of maturation remain unknown.Anurogryllus sp. can be considered a probable alternate host forE. depleta.   相似文献

Predation ofAphis pomi DeGeer [Hom.: Aphididae] byAphidoletes aphidimyza (Rondani) [Dipt.: Cecidomyiidae] was simulated in Michigan apple orchards using a computer and output validated against field data collected from sleeve cages enclosing aphid infested apple terminals. Lower and upper temperature thresholds for development were 2.9 and 35°C for nymphs ofA. pomi with a mean immature developmental period of 162.3 heat units. Median survivorship of adultA. pomi was 364.3 heat units with an average fecundity of 60.7 offspring per female.A. aphidimyza egg and larval lower threshold and developmental periods were 10.5 and 25.5, 8.1°C and 65.5 heat units, respectively. Larval functional response showed Type II behavior with a y-asymptote of 45 aphids killed per predator. Multiple generation model runs performed under different initial predator: prey densities indicated that current critical predator: prey ratios used in the field for control decisions may underestimate predator efficacy.   相似文献

Eretmocerus mundus Mercet is a parasitoidof Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) indigenous tothe Mediterranean and is used commercially foraugmentative biological control in Spain andelsewhere. A better understanding of thesuitability of different host instars wouldhelp optimize production and field application.Incidence of parasitism, development time, survivorship and sex ratio were evaluated whendifferent nymphal instars of the sweetpotatowhitefly Bemisia tabaci biotype `Q' wereoffered for parasitization. Experiments wereconducted on sweet pepper at 25 °C, 75%RH and 16:8 (L:D) photoperiod. E. mundusoviposited in all nymphal instars of B.tabaci except the mature 4th instar orpharate adult (previously designated, `pupa').Incidence of parasitism was greatest (33.8± 5.1 parasitized nymphs) and developmenttime shortest (14.1 ± 0.1 d) whenoviposition occurred under 2nd and3rd instar nymphs compared to 1st or4th instars. Survivorship (85%) andoffspring sex ratio (39.8% female) did notdiffer statistically for parasitoids developingin whiteflies that were parasitized asdifferent instars. Although 2nd and3rd instars were clearly the mostfavorable host stage for E. mundus, itscapacity to parasitize and develop on a widerange of host stages is a favorablecharacteristic for both rearing and fieldapplication.  相似文献

For the short-tailed cricket, Anurogryllus muticus, burrow-making behavior is essential. All nymphal instars construct burrows, but in the adult stage the rate of burrowing behavior is age dependent. Increases in photophase and light intensity stimulate burrowing, and the explicit negative phototaxis is correlated with the cricket's inability to exist under dry conditions. Ingestion of substrate during burrow construction may serve to acquire additional moisture. There is no evidence of burrow recognition, and crickets can construct a burrow when needed. The natural distribution of burrows at the plot investigated on Moorea supports the notion thatA. muticus builds burrows where the preferred food plantAlysicarpus vaginalis is most abundant. By minimizing the traveling distance to food sources when foraging they can retreat to their burrow again.  相似文献

Supernumerary compound eyes were generated in the cricket Acheta domesticus (L.) (Orthoptera : Gryllidae) by applying the insect teratogen biquidone (benz[g]isoquinoline-5, 10-dione) and partially characterized teratogenic mixtures to eggs within 24 hr following oviposition at 31 ± 0.5°C. Postembryonic development of supernumerary eyes was compared with that of normal compound eyes, using light and scanning electron microscopy. All elements of the dioptric apparatus were present in supernumerary eyes of nymphs, but no axonal connection to the brain was found. Supernumerary eyes deteriorated during successive instars. Occasionally, these eyes were sloughed off before the adult stage was reached; more frequently, eyes appeared as highly pigmented protrusions not readily identifiable as adult eye tissue. Teratogen-induced supernumerary eyes are probably not functional light receptors in A. domesticus nymphs or adults.  相似文献
