Axillary buds obtained from in vitro shoot cultures of six mulberries (Morus alba L., M. australis Poir., M. bombycis Koidz., M. cathyana Hemsl., M. latifolia Poir., and M. nigra L.) were encapsulated in calcium alginate hydrogel containing Murashige and Skoog (1962) nutrients (MS) and 4.4 μM benzyladenine (BA). Morphogenic response of encapsulated buds to various planting media such as MS medium + 4.4 μM BA, MS basal medium, soilrite mix + half-strength MS medium, garden soil + half-strength MS medium, soilrite mix + tap water and garden soil + tap water was evaluated. Encapsulated buds of M. alba, M. bombycis, M. latifolia and M. nigra exhibited shoot development in each of the six media tested whereas that of M. australis and M. cathyana responded only to the first four media. Analysis of variance revealed that the planting medium exhibited the greatest influence on shoot development. Of the six planting media evaluated, shoot development was highest in MS medium containing 4.4 μM BA and lowest in garden soil moistened with water. Of the six Morus species studied, one-step regeneration, i.e. both shoot and root formation, was recorded in M. alba, M. bombycis and M. latifolia. Rooted shoots were retrieved from encapsulated buds of these species on all planting media tested except the one that contained BA. Root development was significantly affected by the planting medium and the plant species with planting medium contributing the maximum amount (82%) of the total variation observed. Of the five planting media tested, the percentage of root development was highest in MS basal medium. Of the six Morus species studied, the best shoot and root development was observed in M. alba. Encapsulated buds of M. bombycis, M. latifolia and M. nigra stored for 90 days and those of M. alba, M. australis and M. cathyana for 60 days at 4 °C still regenerated shoots. The influence of Phragmites australis on the growth of Zizania latifolia, and the morphological characteristics of both species, were investigated at two nutrient levels. The experiment was carried out over three growing seasons between May 2003 and December 2005. The experimental plot was longitudinally divided into two equal halves, one of which was planted with Zizania latifolia (Zizania zone) and the other one with Phragmites australis (Phragmites zone). Four weeks after transplantation, the plot was again divided horizontally, perpendicular to the previous division, and subject to low (LN) and high nutrient (HN) treatments. Measured growth indices of the two species were more developed in the HN than in the LN treatments. Both species were observed to invade each other’s zone, but Phragmites latifolia seemed to out-compete Zizania latifolia individuals. This was evident from the decrease in below ground biomass of Zizania latifolia in the third growing season and deterioration in above ground organs with time. It was concluded that Phragmites australis out-competes Zizania latifolia due to better developed root and rhizome system.  相似文献

The oxygen demand of underground organs in tall emergent plants was assumed to be supplied with the oxygen flux through aerial shoots. Measurements were made of the respiratory activity of underground organs and oxygen flux through aerial shoots in Zizania latifolia (Griseb.) Stapf and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.Oxygen uptake rates of Z. latifolia roots and rhizomes decreased as the supply of oxygen decreased. Phragmites australis, however, did not respond to decreases in the supply of oxygen until the oxygen supply was relatively low. The values for old rhizomes of P. australis were very low. Most of the oxygen flux for P. australis was derived from standing dead shoots. The important role of dead shoots of P. australis in plant aeration is suggested. The degree of sufficiency of oxygen supply for Z. latifolia was 179% in May and 92% in August. The values for P. australis were 45% both in May and August. Furthermore, estimation of mean oxygen concentration of inner underground organs for P. australis showed very low values, 1.6% both in May and August, even in shallow water.  相似文献

The emergent plants Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud and Zizania latifolia (Griseb.) Stapf. are distributed along a gradient of increasing water depth, with P. australis restricted to shallow water and Z. latifolia to deeper water. The lower limits of the two vegetational zones were discussed from the view-point of oxygen supply from aerial shoots. The oxygen influx to the underground organs from aerial shoots is proportional to the gradient between oxygen concentrations in atmosphere and inside the basal stem (C). The proportional constant (Q), called here the ventilation coefficient, expresses the efficiency of the diffusion of oxygen. An attempt was made to measure Q and C. The values of Q for the two species in their dominant niches are higher in Z. latifolia than in P. australis, corresponding to the natural distribution with increasing depths of water. Q in Z. latifolia and P. australis first increased and then decreased. Corresponding to such changes of Q, the oxygen concentration inside the basal stem (C) fell to low values for Z. latifolia at the greatest water-depth. Since in Z. latifolia a low value of C in deeper waters was accompanied by a decline in standing crop of aerial shoots, it was concluded that oxygen is the limiting factor for the distribution of Z. latifolia in the deeper waters.  相似文献

Vegetative regeneration after coppicing of Quercus ilex, Phillyrea latifolia, and Fraxinus ornus in two macchia stands in the Maremma Nature Park (Grosseto, Italy) has been studied.Observations during the first three years after the cut showed that horizontal space occupation by shoots is rapid (95% of the available space being reoccupied within 3 yrs.) and stool mortality very low. We observed differences among species in resprouting, growth pattern and shoot differentiation. Q. ilex and P. latifolia had a longer budburst period than F. ornus. There were no considerable differences in height growth among the three species in the first year. During the second and third years the height increments decreased. F. ornus average height increments were higher than those of Q. ilex and P. latifolia. These two species produced proleptic flushes from the first year on, while F. ornus only showed spring flush. The examination of proleptic shoots and of summer and autumn rainfall seem to show that the latter control Q. ilex growth and shoot differentiation more than that of other species. Differentiation among shoots of the same stool occurs from the first year onwards and the initial vigour differences amongst shoots remain during the following years. 芦苇和虉草均具有较强的去污能力,常作为湿地植物配置于同一人工湿地进行污水处理。芦苇作为一种强化感植物对虉草具有较强的化感作用,在自然湿地和人工湿地中均会出现芦苇代替虉草的现象,且这一现象的发生与土壤含水量存在一定联系,此外,芦苇腐解土对虉草的化感抑制效应与腐解土中总酚酸的量密切相关。为了研究芦苇腐解土中主要酚酸类物质的水分响应特性,筛选出其中对水分响应较为明显的酚酸物质种类,该研究采用高效液相色谱法,通过芦苇枯落物腐解土的制备,对不同水分环境下芦苇腐解土中酚酸类物质进行了分离和鉴定。结果表明:芦苇腐解土中可分离出没食子酸、香豆酸、香草酸、丁香酸、对香豆酸、阿魏酸、水杨酸和苯甲酸等8种酚酸类物质,其中香豆酸、苯甲酸和阿魏酸等3种酚酸类物质含量较高。分离出的8种酚酸类物质的含量与腐解土的相对含水量均呈显著线性负相关关系,即随着腐解土相对含水量的上升,酚酸类物质的含量均呈现下降趋势,且各种酚酸类物质对水分的响应趋势均可用线性方程较好地拟合。其中,香豆酸、没食子酸和阿魏酸对芦苇腐解土的水分响应最为明显。因此,可将香豆酸、没食子酸和阿魏酸作为主要调控目标,通过调控湿地土壤中水分含量,削弱芦苇对虉草的化感抑制效应,从而维持人工湿地中虉草芦苇群落的长期稳定共存。  相似文献

为探究不同水生植物碳(C)、氮(N)、磷(P)含量及其化学计量比随季节的变化特征,本研究以上海金泽水库库区四种典型挺水植物旱伞草(Cyperus alternifolius),芦苇(Phragmites australis),千屈菜(Lythrum salicaria),水葱(Scirpus validus)为例,开展了季节性取样及室内分析,结果显示:(1)四种植物碳氮磷含量的变化规律不同。其中,对于植物碳含量,旱伞草和芦苇均无显著差异,千屈菜和水葱仅在冬季显著降低。对于植物氮含量,除旱伞草外,其他植物均在春季生长初期显著降低,在夏季生长旺盛时期显著升高,而旱伞草四季无显著差异。对于植物磷含量,水葱在四季均无显著差异,芦苇和千屈菜在冬季植物休眠期显著降低,旱伞草和芦苇磷含量在夏季显著降低。(2)四种植物C/N/P的季节性变化特征不同。其中,旱伞草C/N四季间无显著差异,其他3种植物C/N在春季生长初期显著升高;在C/P方面,水葱四季间无显著差异,芦苇和千屈菜在春季显著降低,旱伞草和芦苇C/P在夏季显著升高;常绿植物旱伞草N/P在四季无显著差异,其他3种植物N/P均在冬季生物量低时显著升高,春季N/P显著降低,而夏季生物量增长时N/P显著升高。(3)季节变化对四种植物C、P、N/P的影响远大于物种差异的影响,而植物N、C/N、C/P受物种差异的影响程度略大于季节变化。(4)四种植物C/N和C/P分别与N和P呈显著负相关,表明植物C/N和C/P分别受N和P主导;植物C与N、P二者在夏、秋季均无显著相关性,表明起支撑作用的C元素在夏、秋季独立于起生化作用的N、P元素;而营养元素N、P二者含量仅在植物生长的春、夏季显著相关。综上所述,不同植物碳氮磷含量及其化学计量比的季节变化特征不尽相同。今后的研究,可结合相关的生境因子,更好地探究其变化的内在机理。  相似文献

1. Water velocity plays an important role in shaping plant community structure in flowing waters although few authors have yet attempted to explain the adaptation of plants to flow. 2. We aimed to test two hypotheses, that: (i) some emergent macrophytes reconfigure their shoot distribution in fast currents and form clumps, and (ii) the shape and morphology of such clumps minimises drag caused by the current. The study focuses on three emergent macrophytes that co‐occur along a gradient of water velocity. 3. The species showed a clear zonation in response to water depth and current velocity. Phragmites australis occupied shallower and more slowly flowing water than Typha angustifolia and Zizania latifolia, which had similar preferences. 4. Both T. angustifolia and Z. latifolia shoots were more clumped at high velocity, whereas they were more randomly distributed at low flow or in stagnant water. Because of the low shoot density, water flowed more easily through T. angustifolia clumps, whereas Z. latifolia clumps had a high shoot density and large amounts of trapped litter, causing stagnant water in the centre of the clump. The clumps of Z. latifolia with a high density of shoots were longer and narrower than T. angustifolia clumps. Phragmites australis was less tolerant of flow than the other two species and large amounts of litter trapped in the clumps impaired flow. 5. The shoot distribution of both T. angustifolia and Z. latifolia is reconfigured at high flow and this minimises drag on the clumps.  相似文献

The dynamics of metal content in higher aquatic plants (macrophytes) in a small Bugach water reservoir in 1998–2006 was studied. A comparative estimation of the metal content in six macrophyte species (Typha latifolia L., Typha angustifolia L., Polygonium amphibium L., Potamogeton perfoliatus L., Potamogeton pectinatus L., Phragmites australis (Cav) Trin. Ex Steud.) showed that their metal concentrations do not generally exceed those known from the literature. Cluster analysis showed that the macrophyte species under study form two ecological groups with respect to the metal content, i.e., submerged plants (hydrophytes) and emergent aquatic plants (heliophytes).  相似文献

To understand the mechanism of how Phragmites australis makes valuable floating mat biotopes under oligotrophic conditions, we investigated the environmental (water chemistry) and vegetational characteristics (growth, plant species richness, and floristic composition) of a floating mat consisting of three main mat-forming species with a zonal distribution (P. australis on the land side of the floating mat, Zizania latifolia on the middle area, and Typha angustifolia on the water side). Although they showed relatively low growth in the floating mat, compared to those in land-based wetlands, P. australis grew better than other mat-forming species in terms of shoot height and biomass production. Specifically, P. australis made more below-ground parts (593?±?38 g/m2) than other mat-forming species (Z. latifolia, 100?±?10 g/m2; T. angustifolia, 167?±?8 g/m2) and more companion species were found in P. australis-dominated plots (8.5?±?1.0 species/m2) than other plots (Z. latifolia-dominated plots, 2.7?±?0.6 species/m2; T. angustifolia-dominated plots, 1.0?±?0.0 species/m2). The larger amount of below-ground P. australis parts could contribute to thicker and denser mat structures, possibly providing more favorable habitats for neighboring plant species, thus facilitating more companion species within the P. australis-dominated area of the mat.

This study tested a vegetation strategy for controlling Phragmites australis invasion into brackish marshes as an alternative to the current technique of repeated herbicide sprays followed by burning. This strategy involves blocking P. australis by planting desired plants selected from wild populations and/or tissue culture regenerants at key points on the major routes of P. australis invasion. The planting of native species was conducted at three sites in a herbicide-treated P. australis marsh near Salem, NJ. Wild population selections of three upland marsh shrubs, Myrica cerifera, Baccharis halimifolia, and Iva frutescens, as well as two grass species, Spartina alterniflora and Spartina patens, and two rushes, Juncus gerardi and Juncus roemerianus, were planted according to their normal zonation positions. Tissue culture regenerated plants of the two grasses and two rushes, and the sedge species Scirpus robustus, were also planted. Plant growth at each site was monitored each year after planting for up to 3 years. Most plants of B. halimifolia, I. frutescens, J. roemerianus, and S. patens demonstrated a consistent vigorous growth at all three sites, whether or not the plants were collected from wild populations or were tissue culture regenerants. These multi-layered walls of plants demonstrated effectiveness in controlling the P. australis by restricting or inhibiting its spread. Upon screening 48 regenerated plants of S. patens at one of the three sites, we found that some regenerants showed enhanced characteristics for blocking P. australis, such as greater expansion and a high stem density. The availability of the tissue culture-regenerated plants of the native marsh species makes it possible to select lines from local genotypes that have desirable characteristics for wetland restoration projects, such as blocking P. australis reinvasion.  相似文献

In 1968, the polder Zuidelijk Flevoland was reclaimed in the Netherlands. Observations on species succession were made during a period of seven years in an area later known as the nature reserve Oostvaardersplassen. Directly after reclamation, a large number of plant species were recruited. Here, only the dynamics of the three dominant species will be discussed, i.e. the annual mudflat speciesSenecio congestus, and the long-lived emergent macrophytesTypha latifolia andPhragmites australis. Small differences in elevation had a large impact on seedling recruitment. Overall,S. congestus dominated in the first year after reclamation, andT. latifolia prevailed during the second and third year. Thereafter,P. australis became dominant, despite fewer seedlings. In the first three years after reclamation, clones ofP. australis grew very slowly, afterwards they showed a constant expansion rate of ca. 4 m/yr. However, close to pools waterfowl grazing slowed down the expansion of clones. The observed spatial and temporal variation in the colonization of this young polder area can be explained by species differences in life history traits, resource capture, as well as in the susceptibility to stem-boring insects and waterfowl grazing.  相似文献

This study follows the outcome of long-term competition between a broad-leaved and a narrowleaved Typha species, T. latifolia and T. angustifolia respectively, in a eutrophic lake. The lake was bordered by a zone of T. latifolia, at one location interrupted by a T. angustifolia stand. Distributional changes of the T. angustifolia stand and the adjacent zone of T. latifolia were measured on aerial photographs (13 years) and along ground-level transects (6 years). A second stand of T. angustifolia was established with transplanted ramets within a formerly homogeneous zone of T. latifolia, and displacement between the two species was measured along ground-level transects after 6 years. Differences between the species in shoot performance were investigated to help explain the relative competitive abilities of the two Typha species. T. angustifolia expanded at the expense of T. latifolia at all water depths where both species occurred, except in very shallow water. Expansion rates suggest that T. angustifolia was not affected by the presence of T. latifolia in water depths exceeding 0.25 m. The Typha species were significantly negatively associated according to rank correlations of shoot densities, and changes of shoot densities, along the transects. These results suggest that T. angustifolia is competitively superior to T. latifolia, contradicting earlier studies. The higher competitive ability of T. angustifolia is consistent with its having taller shoots and a higher standing crop in early summer. Further, shoot height distributions indicated a closer integration of shoot emergence during spring in T. angustifolia than in T. latifolia. A high leaf area/shoot weight ratio suggest that T. latifolia may instead be relatively fast-growing, achieving competitive superiority over narrower-leaved Typha species during a transient period after simultaneous seedling establishment.  相似文献

We evaluated the specific strategies of hydrophytes for root O2 consumption in relation to N acquisition and investigated whether the strategies varied depending on the aeration capacity. Aeration capacity of roots is an important factor for determining hypoxia tolerance in plants. However, some hydrophytes possessing quite different aeration capacities often co‐occur in wetlands, suggesting that root O2 consumption also strongly affects hypoxia tolerance. We cultivated Phragmites australis with high aeration capacity and Zizania latifolia with low aeration capacity in hypoxic conditions with NH or NO treatment and compared the growth, N uptake, N assimilation and root respiration between the two species. In Z. latifolia grown with NH treatment, high N uptake activity and restrained root growth led to sufficient N acquisition and decrease in whole‐root respiration rate. These characteristics consequently compensated for the low aeration capacity. In contrast, in P. australis, low N uptake activity was compensated by active root growth, but the whole‐root respiration rate was high. This high root respiration rate was allowed by the high aeration capacity. The O2 consumption‐related traits of hydrophyte roots were closely correlated with N acquisition strategies, which consequently led to a compensational relationship with the root aeration capacity. It is likely that this functional linkage plays an important role as a core mechanism in the adaptation of plants to hypoxic soils.  相似文献

The biodiversity of coal slurry ponds can be inhibited, at least in part, by dense stands of Phragmites australis. In this study, we demonstrate that species richness can be increased in coal slurry ponds if the dominant species (P. australis and Typha latifolia) are removed and that underwater herbivory simulated by cutting will kill emergents. The study was conducted in the greenhouse and the field in both flooded and drawndown conditions. Stems of plants of P. australis and T. latifolia were cut in a greenhouse and the cut plants of both species showed a decline in survivorship (25 and 42% survival, respectively) whereas all uncut plants survived. In a reclaimed coal pond at Pyramid State Park, Illinois, neither P. australis nor T. latifolia survived cutting underwater, but all of the uncut plants survived. Regrowth measured as total biomass of stems was less among flooded versus freely drained plants (0.3 and 2.6 g biomass, respectively). Cut versus uncut plants, combining freely drained and flooded, had less below-ground biomass (99.4 and 254.4 g, respectively). In the greenhouse study, oxygen levels in rhizomes subsequent to cutting were measured using an oxygen electrode and millivolt meter. Oxygen levels in P. australis were lower in cut versus uncut plants both in flooded (15.0 vs. 16.3% ambient O2, respectively) and freely drained conditions (14.5 vs. 15.0%, ambient O2, respectively). Similar responses to cutting were demonstrated by T. latifolia. In an unreclaimed coal slurry pond with monospecific stands of P. australis, plant species richness increased in cut plots as compared to uncut plots (29 vs. 2 species, respectively) between March and September, 1995. This study demonstrated that species richness can be increased in coal ponds by mechanical cutting and this potentially by herbivory; however, the additional species were mostly exotics.  相似文献

Riparian forest communities dominated by Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa L. (Torr. and Gray ex Hook.) Brayshaw are important contributors to biodiversity in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of the Western United States. Species composition along a successional gradient from stand initiation to late-succession of P. balsamifera-dominated riparian forests was investigated along 145 km of the Willamette River, Oregon. There were 151 total species encountered across 28 stands and a mean species richness of 33.3 species per stand. Young stands were dominated by P. balsamifera and Salix tree spp. and opportunistic herbaceous species. Understory trees, shrubs, and herbaceous species as well as late-successional tree species established 12–15 years after stand initiation. Fraxinus latifolia Benth. was the dominant late-successional tree species. Vertical structural diversity, P. balsamifera mean diameter at breast height, large tree biomass, and stand age were strongly correlated with understory species presence and abundance based on non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMS) ordination. There were no young stands on mid and high terraces and this was reflected in geomorphic position being strongly correlated with the stand age gradient. Abundance of Phalaris arundinacea L. an invasive grass species, was also significantly correlated with plant species composition and abundance. This study indicates that Willamette River riparian forests are diverse and therefore important to the biodiversity of the Willamette River valley and that their presence as a mosaic of communities of different successional stages may be threatened by human interventions, including influences exerted by introduced plant species.  相似文献

In order to analyze the extent to which allelopathic action of Cistus ladanifer may influence the successional progression towards Mediterranean sub-climacic shrublands and the geographical distribution of other species, the inhibitory effect of Cistus ladanifer extracts on the germination of 20 Mediterranean species was analyzed. Five of the species tested were characteristic of maquis sub-climacic shrublands: Arbutus unedo, Adenocarpus argyrophyllus, Phillyrea angustifolia, Phillyrea latifolia, and Rhamnus alaternus. Tests were also carried out on 6 Cistaceae species in order to evaluate the auto-toxicity rate of allelopathic extracts: Halimium umbellatum subsp. viscosum, Halimium ocymoides, Cistus ladanifer, Cistus salvifolius, Cistus monspeliensis, and Cistus populifolius. Nine herbaceous species sharing the natural habitat with C. ladanifer were also examined. Results confirmed a clear inhibitory and delaying effect of aqueous C. ladanifer-leaf extracts on the germination of P. angustifolia, P. latifolia, R. alaternus, H. ocymoides, C. populifolius, Erysimum lagascae, Brassica barrelieri, Silene tridentata, and Moricandia moricandioides. Assays with soil collected below the canopy of the C. ladanifer community showed more pronounced inhibitory effect on sub-climacic shrub species than the aqueous extracts. In contrast, the opposite pattern was detected when analyzing the allelopathic effect of natural soil on Cistaceae and herbaceous species. Allelopathic compounds produced by C. ladanifer showed little auto-toxicity. The inhibitory effect of phytotoxic compounds accumulated in the jaral soil upon germination of A. unedo, B.␣barrelieri, and M. moricandioides was eliminated by heating soil at 150 °C for 10 min. Phenolic compounds (i.e. ferulic, p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, p-coumaric, and caffeic acids) and terpenes (i.e. α and β-pinene) with allelopathic documented effect were detected in the aqueous extracts and soil samples used in the analyses. We suggest that the allelopathic effect of C. ladanifer may influence the composition and structure of Mediterranean communities where the species is present, since it hinders the establishment of some sub-climacic species and may reduce the area occupied by numerous herbaceous species.  相似文献

Development of foliage structure in Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steudel stands in three Scottish lochs in 1975 was studied. Both tagged and harvested shoots were utilized to monitor the seasonal changes in the chlorophyll content, net leaf number, rate of shoot elongation, leaf production, leaf fall and leaf area increase, and individual leaf size in the reed-stands from the three study areas. Quantitative measurements of the number of leaf and leaf surface area in 25 cm stratified layers in the shoots were also made during active canopy development from May to August.  相似文献

Sixty-five plant species have been found in Lake Provala (the Vojvodina Province, Serbia) and its riparian zone. Among them, three hydrophytes were dominant: Nymphoides peltata, Myriophyllum spicatum and Ceratophyllum demersum. As interactions between different ecological factors, especially light, temperature and nutrient level, are of prime importance for productivity of macrophytes, we analyzed the main physical and chemical indicators of water quality in the studied location. In the vegetation period of the year 2000, the dominant hydrophytes were analyzed for biomass production dynamics in the studied aquatic ecosystem, including fresh weight (FW), dry weight (DW) and ash free dry weight (AFDW). 在黄河中游郑州荥阳段,选择了5种河滨湿地植物群落进行根系和土壤性状特征研究,以期阐明不同植物群落的根系分布规律与土壤性状的关系,为河滨湿地植物群落组成以及土壤质量恢复提供科学参考。结果表明(1)在0—40 cm土层,根生物量密度与根长密度的平均值均表现为:芦苇群落(Phragmites australis)和芦苇-狗牙根(Cynodon dactylon)群落均大于芦苇-拂子茅(Calamagrostis epigeios)-狗牙根群落、拂子茅-狗牙根群落、拂子茅-狗牙根-水莎草(Juncellus serotinus)群落。拂子茅-狗牙根、芦苇-拂子茅-狗牙根、拂子茅-水莎草-狗牙根三种植物群落类型下根生物量密度、根长密度在0—20 cm表层土壤较大,芦苇群落和芦苇-狗牙根群落的根生物量密度、根长密度在10—40 cm的土层较大。(2)黄河河滨湿地芦苇群落、芦苇-狗牙根群落的土壤以粉粒为主,拂子茅-狗牙根群落、芦苇-拂子茅-狗牙根群落、拂子茅-狗牙根-水莎草群落的土壤主要以砂粒为主。在0—40 cm土层,芦苇群落、芦苇-狗牙根群落的土壤含水率、土壤有机质、有效氮和有效磷含量均显著高于...  相似文献
