The preference‐performance or ‘mother‐knows‐best’ hypothesis states that female insects choose to oviposit on a host plant that increases the performance of their offspring. This positive link between host plant choice and larval performance is especially important for leaf miners with non‐motile larvae that are entirely dependent upon the oviposition choice of the female for host plant location. Preference and performance of the ash leaf coneroller, Caloptilia fraxinella (Ely) (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), a specialist on ash trees, Fraxinus spp. (Oleaceae), were tested in a series of laboratory and field experiments. Female C. fraxinella were exposed to two closely related hosts, black ash, Fraxinus nigra Marshall, and green ash, Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marshall var. subintegerrima (Vahl), in oviposition choice and wind tunnel flight experiments to determine which host is most attractive for oviposition. Caloptilia fraxinella females were inconsistent in host choice, yet performance of larvae was greater on green than black ash. In preference studies, C. fraxinella preferred to oviposit on black ash when leaflets were removed from the tree, but preferred intact green ash over black ash seedlings for oviposition and host location in a wind tunnel. In the field, however, more C. fraxinella visited black ash var. ‘Fallgold’ at leaf flush than green ash at the same sites. Age of the ash leaflet also influences oviposition in this leaf miner and females preferred new over old leaflets for oviposition. Performance of C. fraxinella larvae was evaluated in field and laboratory experiments and was greater on green ash than on black ash in both experiments based on larval survival and development time parameters. The stronger oviposition and host location preference in the field for black ash were not linked to enhanced performance of offspring, as green ash was the superior host, supporting higher larval survival and faster development. A stronger host location preference in the wind tunnel for green ash over black ash, however, suggests that under certain circumstances with this moth species, ‘mother (may) know best’.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Bioassays were carried out to examine differences in the feeding of a folivorous weevil, Stereonychus fraxini De Geer, on leaves from ash saplings with undamaged roots, and those with damaged roots. Beetles ate significantly more of the leaves of root-damaged saplings in a choice experiment.
  • 2 A separate study of the effect of root damage on leaf toughness was carried out on a second group of ash saplings. Saplings with damaged roots had less tough leaves than control saplings. Decreased leaf toughness in hypothesized as a mechanism to explain the preference of weevils for leaves from damaged trees.
  • 3 Both chemical and physical changes may occur in the tissues of ash trees in response to environmental stress such as drought and root damage.
  • 4 Root damage caused by agricultural disturbance is hypothesized as a mechanism making mature ash trees in hedgerow ecosystems more susceptible to insect herbivores.

Canopy dieback of Eucalyptus blakelyi trees is often associated with defoliation by insects: the foliage of trees with dieback is nutritionally superior for insects and is more heavily damaged by them. I investigated whether differences in the nutritional quality of foliage were genetically determined, or caused by environmental stress. In a series of glasshouse experiments, with seedlings and grafted plants derived from dieback and healthy populations of trees. I tested the influence of deprivation of nutrients, drought, waterlogging, saline waterlogging and addition of excess phosphate, on the nutritional quality of foliage. Differences in the foliar properties of plants from different genetic sources were not consistent with the differences between the source populations. Most of the environmental stresses applied caused a reduction in foliar quality (decreased water and nitrogen contents, and increased specific leaf weights). I hypothesize that the enhanced nutritional quality of the foliage of dieback trees is more likely to be a consequence of benign growing conditions (e.g. improved soil fertility) than of environmental stress. Field data for soil properties and the effect of drought on mature trees are consistent with this view.  相似文献

The ash leaf cone roller Caloptilia fraxinella Ely (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) is an invasive leaf‐mining moth pest of horticultural ash Fraxinus spp. in the Canadian Prairie Provinces. Caloptilia fraxinella overwinter as adults in reproductive diapause and mating occurs after overwintering in the spring. The effect of a carbohydrate food source on fat and glycerol reserves throughout the long adult life stage of this moth is investigated. Insects collected as pupae are given access to either water or sugar water upon adult eclosion. Moths held under the different feeding regimes are sampled before (summer and autumn) and after overwintering in the spring. Analysis of either glycerol or lipid content is conducted for male and female moths from each collection period. Both moth weight and glycerol concentration are affected by moth sex, food regime and season of collection. Although female moths are heavier than males, a higher glycerol concentration occurs in males. Moths fed sugar are heavier and have a higher glycerol concentration than water‐fed moths late in reproductive diapause and after overwintering. Moths collected in the spring after overwintering are lighter and have a lower glycerol content than moths collected before winter. There is a significant influence of feeding regime and season on moth body lipid content, with sugar‐fed moths having more fat than water‐fed moths; however, this difference is smaller in the summer than the autumn or spring. An initial understanding of the overwintering biology and diapause of this pest is provided in the present study.  相似文献

Summary Both mechanical damage to mountain birch foliage and rearing of moth larvae on the trees reduced the growth of Epirrita autumnata larvae reared on these trees in the following year. The effects of physical damage and some other cues from insects were additive. On bird cherry the performance of Epirrita larvae was equal on untreated trees and on trees artificially defoliated in the previous year, but larval growth was reduced on previously insect-damaged branches. With mountain ash just physical damage per se reduced the performance of Epirrita larvae. On Salix phylicifolia there were no significant differences in the growth or survival of Epirrita on untreated control bushes and on bushes with partial larval damage during the previous year. Among untreated control trees the growth and survivorship of Epirrita were higher on fast-growing willow and bird cherry than on the slow-growing mountain birch. Mountain birch and mountain ash, the two deciduous tree species adapted to nutrient-poor soils, showed delayed inducible resistance triggered by defoliation (artificial or insect-made). This supports the hypothesis that delayed inducible resistance may be a passive response due to nutrient-stress caused by defoliation. On the other hand, the additional increase in the resistance of mountain birch triggered by specific cues from insects suggests that this response may be an evolved defense against leaf-eating insects.  相似文献

A biodegradable attracticide formulation containing the pyrethroid insecticide permethrin and the sex pheromone of the ash leaf cone roller, Caloptilia fraxinella (Ely) (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), was tested for attractiveness and toxicity to males of this invasive pest of horticultural ash, Fraxinus spp. Marsh. (Oleaceae). Trap capture in attracticide‐baited traps was equal to capture in traps baited with rubber septa lures releasing the known attractive pheromone. Pheromone response by male C. fraxinella was not affected by the presence of permethrin as equal numbers of males were captured in traps baited with the attracticide formulation with and without permethrin. Attraction to the attracticide containing both pheromone and insecticide active ingredients did not vary with dose as 10, 50, and 100 mg droplets of the formulation attracted similar numbers of male moths in a field experiment. Equal numbers of male moths were captured in traps baited with droplets that had aged for 0–5 weeks in a laboratory fume hood before deployment in the field. The permethrin constituent of the attracticide formulation was toxic to male moths treated through tarsal contact and resulted in 73 and 100% mortality at 24 and 72 h post‐treatment, respectively. Leg autotomy occurred in over 80% of males 24 h post‐treatment to formulations containing permethrin. Mortality of moths was greater 24 h after treatment with a fresh attracticide source as compared to a 5‐week‐old source. However, mortality as a result of treatment with fresh and aged attracticide droplets was equal at 48, 72, and 96 h post‐treatment. This formulation has the potential to become a useful tool in an integrated pest‐management system for C. fraxinella on horticultural ash.  相似文献

A survey of 801 poplar trees in central east England in 1999 demonstrated a correlation between crown dieback and infestation by hornet clearwing moth (Sesia apiformis), induced by a period of drought in 1995-1996. To determine whether trees colonised by S. apiformis would subsequently deteriorate and die or whether they could recover despite infestation and damage to the stem, all trees in the original survey were re-assessed in 2001, 2003 and 2005. The repeat surveys showed that trees with 70% or less crown dieback in 1999 replaced their canopy and generally improved by 2005, irrespective of the numbers of S. apiformis in the stem, whereas trees that had 75% or more crown dieback in 1999 either died or declined further. The presence of S. apiformis did not prevent tree recovery, and there was little evidence that infestation slowed the rate of recovery. Populations of S. apiformis, measured in terms of the numbers of adult emergence holes visible in the base of the trees, decreased between 2001 and 2005 at the same time as the amount of dieback visible in the canopy of the poplars markedly decreased. However, the fall in numbers of emergence holes at this time reflected a decline in larval establishment 2-3 years earlier, and indicated that the moth population had responded to a more rapid restoration in the internal state of the trees, which was not reflected immediately by the gradual replacement of dead branches and reduction in dieback symptoms.  相似文献

Results are presented from a fertilization experiment with wood bark ash (0, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 Mg ha-1) applied to prevent and cure visible nutrient disorders of young Scots pine established on a peatland field. 13 years after fertilization, dieback of trees and other symptoms of nutrient disorders were substantially reduced or even eliminated, especially where higher doses had been applied. The volume of the growing stock was more than 70 m3 ha-1 for the highest dose while control plots produced less than 15 m3 ha-1. Vegetation characteristics changed following ash treatments with high ash doses favouring grasses and low ash doses promoting mosses. Some major changes in soil and foliar nutrient concentrations were evident due to ash fertilization. K and B, however, were clearly the most limiting nutrients that could be cycled where high doses of ash were used. This was particularly the case with a dose of 20 Mg ha-1. Decomposition of the topsoil was at its highest on plots with ash doses of 5 and 10 Mg ha-1 ash and at its lowest when the dose was 2 Mg ha-1. This was partly due to differences in the C/N ratio of the soil. All decomposition parameters indicated a high degree of humification in the topsoil. High N content (of organic material), low C/N in the soil and optimum levels of foliar N concentrations suggested sufficient N mineralization for tree growth to have occurred in the soil.  相似文献

The extent to which human activities expanded the range of central and north-eastern Asian steppes into the forest is controversial. Natural versus anthropogenic causes of the inhibition of tree growth were investigated in a case study in the western Khentey Mountains in montane meadow steppe on sun-exposed southern slopes, representing treeless outposts within the northern Mongolian mountain taiga. Sowing and planting experiments with Mongolia’s most common tree species, Larix sibirica, did not result in the successful establishment of any tree during one growing season, despite the exclusion of grazing by large herbivores from the sample plots by fencing. Less than 1% of the seeds germinated 4 weeks after sowing in spring. All seedlings died within a further 3 weeks due to drought and heat. Two-year-old seedlings suffered from drought as well as from feeding by of gypsy moth larvae (Lymantria dispar), grasshoppers and rodents. While the gypsy moth was effective at damaging L. sibirica only during few weeks at the beginning of the growing season, feeding by grasshoppers and rodents persisted through the entire growing season. At the end of the growing season two thirds of the seedlings died due to insect and small mammal herbivory and one third due to drought-related damage. Herbivores attacked larch seedlings more rapidly on the open meadow steppe than at the forest edge. Drought and high temperature at the soil–air interface are crucial for inhibiting tree encroachment on the studied steppe slopes. Competition by non-arboreal plants is of subordinate significance for the establishment of L. sibirica. Trees can only establish at especially favorable microsites under humid weather conditions. Such trees, however, are exposed to a high risk of mortality from insect or small mammal herbivory.  相似文献

The possibility that drought causes dieback of eucalypts in rural Australia was investigated. Water potential and canopy condition in dieback and healthy rural Eucalyptus blakelyi and E. melliodora trees were compared during and after an extreme drought in the ACT. All the trees were drought affected, but the extent was independent of the condition of their canopies at the beginning of the study.  相似文献

Summary Nitrate reductase activity (NRA), nitrate content and biomass components of leaflets, leaf stalks, old stem, current-year stem and roots of ash trees (Fraxinus excelsior L.) growing in their natural habitats were investigated. In addition, NRA, total nitrogen and nitrate concentration were analyzed in the leaves and roots of ash trees from four different field sites. The highest NRA per gram biomass and also per total compartment biomass was found in the leaflets, even though root biomass was much higher than total leaflet biomass. The highest nitrate concentrations were found in the leaf stalks. Correlations between nitrate availability in the soil and NRA in leaves were not significant due to high variability of the actual soil nitrate concentrations. The seasonal variation in foliar NRA, nitrate concentration and total nitrogen concentration is much smaller in F. excelsior than reported for herbaceous species and is mainly caused by changes in the actual soil nitrate availability and by senescence of the leaves.  相似文献

Winter‐drought induced forest diebacks in the low‐latitude margins of species' distribution ranges can provide new insights into the mechanisms (carbon starvation, hydraulic failure) underlying contrasting tree reactions. We analysed a winter‐drought induced dieback at the Scots pine's southern edge through a dual‐isotope approach (Δ13C and δ18O in tree‐ring cellulose). We hypothesized that a differential long‐term performance, mediated by the interaction between CO2 and climate, determined the fates of individuals during dieback. Declining trees showed a stronger coupling between climate, growth and intrinsic water‐use efficiency (WUEi) than non‐declining individuals that was noticeable for 25 years prior to dieback. The rising stomatal control of water losses with time in declining trees, indicated by negative Δ13C‐δ18O relationships, was likely associated with their native aptitude to grow more and take up more water (suggested by larger tracheid lumen widths) than non‐declining trees and, therefore, to exhibit a greater cavitation risk. Freeze‐thaw episodes occurring in winter 2001 unveiled such physiological differences by triggering dieback in those trees more vulnerable to hydraulic failure. Thus, WUEi tightly modulated growth responses to long‐term warming in declining trees, indicating that co‐occurring individuals were differentially predisposed to winter‐drought mortality. These different performances were unconnected to the depletion of stored carbohydrates.  相似文献

Emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis) (EAB), an Asian woodboring beetle accidentally introduced in North America, has killed millions of ash (Fraxinus spp.) trees and is spreading rapidly. This study examined the effects of tree- and site-level factors on the mortality of ash trees in stands infested by EAB in OH, USA. Our data show that ash populations in forested sites can progress from healthy to almost complete mortality of mature trees within 6 years. Although the end result of nearly complete mortality does not vary, survival analysis with 5 years of data showed that some factors affected the rate of mortality. We found more rapid mortality in stands with lower densities of ash trees. This finding supports an extension of the resource dilution hypothesis whereby concentration of EAB on few trees in low ash density areas leads to rapid decline of these trees. This contradicts an extension of the resource concentration theory that greater host density increases relative pest abundance and host mortality. Although reductions in ash density via diversification may be desirable for other silvicultural, conservation, and management objectives in preparation for EAB, our study shows that the management strategy of reducing ash density is unlikely to protect the remaining ash trees. Survival analysis also showed that mortality was more rapid for trees shaded by other trees and for trees initially exhibiting dieback. In management scenarios where hazard tree removal must be spread over several years due to budget constraints, focusing initial tree removal on stressed trees is recommended.  相似文献

Rural dieback of Eucalyptus blakelyi trees growing on pastoral properties near Canberra is associated with chronic defoliation by insects. In order to test the effect of defoliation on subsequent herbivory, I artificially defoliated three healthy trees by clipping their terminal branchlets. The foliage that regrew on the clipped trees was nutritionally superior to the foliage it replaced, and was much more heavily damaged by grazing insects. There was a transient increase in the tannin content of the regrowth foliage, but this was apparently ineffective in defending it from subsequent herbivory. Compared with the foliage on nearby E. blakelyi trees that also produced major flushes of leaf growth during the same period, the regrowth on the clipped trees had enhanced dietary qualities and suffered more insect damage. Leaf age contributed to many of the differences in dietary quality, but when adjustments were made for the effects of leaf age the same trends remained. Five of the nearby trees were suffering from the chronic insect grazing associated with rural dieback, and the other five appeared healthy. The dietary quality of regrowth foliage on the clipped trees was qualitatively more similar to that of foliage on the dieback trees. Thus the chronic herbivory associated with rural dieback may be partly self-perpetuating, given this positive feedback between defoliation and dietary quality, and an apparent absence of other effective controls on insect populations.  相似文献

We investigated the hydraulic consequences of a major decrease in root‐to‐leaf area ratio (AR:AL) caused by nutrient amendments to 15‐year‐old Pinus taeda L. stands on sandy soil. In theory, such a reduction in AR:AL should compromise the trees’ ability to extract water from drying sand. Under equally high soil moisture, canopy stomatal conductance (GS) of fertilized trees (F) was 50% that of irrigated/fertilized trees (IF), irrigated trees (I), and untreated control trees (C). As predicted from theory, F trees also decreased their stomatal sensitivity to vapour pressure deficit by 50%. The lower GS in F was associated with 50% reduction in leaf‐specific hydraulic conductance (KL) compared with other treatments. The lower KL in F was in turn a result of a higher leaf area per sapwood area and a lower specific conductivity (conducting efficiency) of the plant and its root xylem. The root xylem of F trees was also 50% more resistant to cavitation than the other treatments. A transport model predicted that the lower AR:AL in IF trees resulted in a considerably restricted ability to extract water during drought. However, this deficiency was not exposed because irrigation minimized drought. In contrast, the lower AR:AL in F trees caused only a limited restriction in water extraction during drought owing to the more cavitation resistant root xylem in this treatment. In both fertilized treatments, approximate safety margins from predicted hydraulic failure were minimal suggesting increased vulnerability to drought‐induced dieback compared with non‐fertilized trees. However, IF trees are likely to be so affected even under a mild drought if irrigation is withheld.  相似文献

During the extreme 1992–1997 El Niño drought event, widespread stem mortality, or tree dieback, of both mature and juvenile eucalypts occurred within the tropical savannas of northeast Australia. Most of the dieback occurred in individuals of the ironbark species complex (Eucalyptus crebra E. xanthoclada) while individuals of the bloodwood species Corymbia erythrophloia, exhibited significantly less stem mortality. Indicative of greater water stress, predawn and midday xylem water potentials of ironbark adults and saplings were significantly more negative than predawn values of bloodwoods. The very negative xylem water potentials in ironbarks suggest that stem mortality in both adult and juvenile ironbarks results from drought-induced embolism and that ironbarks perhaps have a shallower and less extensive root system than bloodwoods. Although predawn and midday water potentials for ironbark adults and saplings were similar, a census of mature and juvenile ironbark trees indicated that mortality was higher in adult trees. Cavitation vulnerability curves indicated that ironbark saplings may be better buffered against cavitation than adult trees. If they possess smaller root systems, saplings are more likely than adults to experience low xylem water potentials, even in non-drought years. Xylem conduits produced in adult trees during periods of normal rainfall, although perhaps more efficient in water conduction, may be more vulnerable to cavitation during infrequent severe droughts.  相似文献

Summary We compared the effects of 9.5 months of a continuous flooding treatment with a drained control treatment on one year-old seedlings of green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh.) and water oak (Quercus nigra L.), two tree species common to the bottomland-hardwood forests of eastern North America. The internal root gas composition of the more flood tolerant species, green ash, maintained higher oxygen and lower carbon dioxide concentrations under the flooding treatment than water oak. This apparently resulted in differences in rhizosphere oxidation. The amounts of Fe and Mn and the Fe/Mn ratio of the root coating extracted from trees in reduced soil conditions were much higher for the green ash than the water oak. It is argued that this reflects differences in the ability of these two species to maintain rhizosphere oxidation under prolonged periods of flooding and to prevent the accumulation of reduced potentially phytotoxic compounds. Alcohol dehydrogenase activity increased in the green ash and decreased in the water oak in the flooded treatment. This indicated that the better adapted species was able to rely upon increased anaerobic respiration in order to compensate for the decreased root oxygen supply, but the water oak was unable to maintain previous levels of respiration, probably as the result of sulfide toxicity.  相似文献

Climate change is likely to produce more frequent and longer droughts in the Mediterranean region, like that of 1994, which produced important changes in the Quercus ilex forests, with up to 76% of the trees showing complete canopy dieback. At the landscape level, a mosaic of responses to the drought was observed, linked to the distribution of lithological substrates. Damage to the dominant tree species (Q. ilex) and the most common understorey shrub (Erica arborea) was more noticeable on the compact substrates (breccia) than on the fissured ones (schist). This result was consistent with observations documenting deeper root penetration in schist than in breccia materials, allowing the plants growing on fissured substrates to use water from deeper soil levels. Smaller plants were more vulnerable to drought than larger plants in the trees, but not in the shrubs. Overall, Q. ilex was more affected than E. arborea. The resilience of the system was evaluated from the canopy recovery 1 year after the episode. Stump and crown resprouting was fairly extensive, but the damage pattern in relation to substrate, plant size, and species remained similar. The effect of recurrent drought episodes was studied on vegetation patches of Q. ilex located on mountain slopes and surrounded by bare rock. We observed that plants that resprouted weakly after a previous drought in 1985 were more likely to die or to produce poor regeneration in 1995 than plants that had resprouted vigorously. Vegetation patches located on the lower part of the slope were also less damaged than patches situated uphill. The study provides evidence of relevant changes in forest canopy as a consequence of extreme climate events. The distribution of this effect across the landscape is mediated by lithological substrate, causing patchy patterns. The results also support the hypothesis that recurrent droughts can produce a progressive loss of resilience, by depleting the ability of surviving plants to regenerate.  相似文献
