To assess the extent of variation in phosphorus acquisition efficiency of some winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), winter and spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes, depletion of inorganic phosphorus (P) extractable with 0.5 M NaHCO3 (NaHCO3-Pi) from the rhizosphere soil was studied. Nutrients supply, rhizosphere soil pH and soil water content was kept equal for all the genotypes with the aim to reduce the confounding variation due to these factors. The experimental set up implied that no difference in the relative growth rates, nitrogen, potassium and calcium content of shoot dry matter occurred among the genotypes. The winter wheat, winter barley and spring barley genotypes differed significantly (p>0.05) in their efficiency to acquire NaHCO3-Pi from the rhizosphere soil. The efficiency of the winter wheat genotypes to acquire NaHCO3-Pi from rhizosphere soil ranked Kraka > Gawain > Foreman > Sleipner = Obelisk > Kosack > Pepital > Arum. Winter wheat genotypes differed in extent of P depletion profiles in the rhizosphere, indicating variation in root hair length. The winter barley and spring barley genotypes also showed significant differences in their P depletion profiles near roots. The efficiency of the winter barley genotypes to acquire soil P in the rhizosphere ranked Hamu > Frost > Marinka > Astrid > Clarine = Angora. The efficiency of spring barley genotypes to acquire NaHCO3-Pi in the rhizosphere ranked Canut > Etna Riga > Digger > Peel > Semal > Alexis. The rhizosphere pH remained unchanged, suggesting that additional mechanisms such as root hair formation and root exudates play a significant role in causing variation in P acquisition among the genotypes.  相似文献

Genotypic differences in acquiring immobile P exist among species or cultivars within one species. We investigated the P-efficiency mechanisms of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) in low P soil by measuring plant growth, P acquisition and rhizosphere properties. Two genotypes with different P efficiencies were grown in a root-compartment experiment under low P (P15: 15 mg P kg?1) and high P (P100: 100 mg P kg?1) treatments. The P-efficient genotype produced more biomass, and had a high seed yield and high P acquisition efficiency under low P treatment. Under both P treatments, both genotypes decreased inorganic P (Pi) and organic P (Po) fractions in the rhizosphere soil. However there was no decrease in NaHCO3-Po at P100. For the P15 treatment, the concentrations of NaHCO3-Po and NaOH-Po were negatively correlated with soil acid phosphatase activity. The P-efficient genotype 102 differed from the P-inefficient genotype 105 in the following ways. In the rhizosphere the soil pH was lower, acid phosphatase activity was higher, and depletion of P was greater. Further the depletion zones were wider. These results suggested that improving P efficiency based on the character of P efficiency acquisition in P-efficient genotype would be a potential approach for maintaining rapeseed yield potential in soils with low P bioavailability.  相似文献

A new method allowing control of rhizosphere pH and mineral nutrition was applied to study depletion of various organic and inorganic phosphorus fractions extractable sequentially with 0.5M KHCO3 (pH 8.5), 0.1M NaOH and residual P extractable with 6M H2SO4 from the rhizosphere soil.Soil pH was affected about 2 mm from the root mat. Depletion zones of inorganic P (KHCO3-Pi) extractable with 0.5M KHCO3 extended up to about 4 mm but the depletion zones of all other P fractions were about 1 mm only. The root-induced decrease of soil pH from 6.7 to 5.5 increased the depletion of total P from all fractions by 20% and depletion of KHCO3-Pi and residual P by 34% and 43%, respectively. Depletion of organic P (KHCO3-Po) extractable with 0.5M KHCO3 was not affected by a change in rhizosphere pH. With constant or increased pH, depletion of inorganic P (NaOH-Pi) was 17% and organic P (NaOH-Po) was 22% higher than with decreased pH. Only 54–60% of total P withdrawn from all fractions was from KHCO3-Pi. Substantial amounts of KHCO3-Po and NaOH-Po were mineralized and withdrawn from the rhizosphere within 1 mm from the root mat, as 11–15% of total P withdrawn originated from the organic P fractions. A remaining 11–16% was derived from NaOH-Pi, and 15–18% from residual P fractions likely to be rather immobile. Thus, 40–46% of the P withdrawn near the root mat of rape originated from non-mobile P fractions normally not included in 0.5M NaHCO3 extraction used to obtain an index of plant-available soil P.  相似文献

The lengths of roots and root hairs and the extent of root-induced processes affect phosphorus (P) uptake efficiency by plants. To assess the influence of variation in the lengths of roots and root hairs and rhizosphere processes on the efficiency of soil phosphorus (P) uptake, a pot experiment with a low-P soil and eight selected genotypes of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L) WALP) was conducted. Root length, root diameter and root hair length were measured to estimate the soil volume exploited by roots and root hairs. The total soil P was considered as a pool of Olsen-P, extractable with 0.5 M NaHCO3 at pH 8.5, and a pool of non-Olsen-P. Model calculations were made to estimate P uptake originated from Olsen-P in the root hair zone and the Olsen-P moving by diffusion into the root hair cylinder and non-Olsen-P uptake. The mean uptake rate of P and the mean rate of non-Olsen-P depletion were also estimated. The genotypes differed significantly in lengths of roots and root hairs, and in P uptake, P uptake rates and growth. From 6 to 85% of total P uptake in the soil volume exploited by roots and root hairs was absorbed from the pool of non-Olsen-P. This indicates a considerable activity of root-induced rhizosphere processes. Hence the large differences show that traits for more P uptake-efficient plants exist in the tested cowpea genotypes. This opens the possibility to breed for more P uptake-efficient varieties as a way to bring more sparingly soluble soil P into cycling in crop production and obtain capitalisation of soil P reserves.  相似文献

Plant genotypes differ in P efficiency, i.e. their capacity to grow in soil with low P availability. Plant properties such as root and root hair length, release of P mineralising and mobilising compounds by the roots and P requirement for optimal growth are known to influence P efficiency. In order to improve the understanding of the role of rhizosphere properties in plant P uptake, we grew three Poaceae genotypes [two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes (the P-efficient Goldmark and the P-inefficient Janz), and the Australian native grass Austrostipa densiflora L.] to maturity in an acidic loamy sand with low P availability. Addition of 120 mg P as FePO4 kg−1 (P120) improved the growth of all three genotypes. In both P0 and P120, growth and P uptake were smaller in Janz than in Goldmark. During the vegetative phase, growth and P uptake of Austrostipa were smaller than in Goldmark in P0 but greater in P120. These differences can be explained by plant properties such as root growth, specific P uptake, mobilisation of inorganic and organic P by root exudates and P utilisation efficiency. In P120, P availability in the rhizosphere was least in Janz and greatest in Austrostipa. Microbial biomass P in the rhizosphere was least in Janz. Acid phosphatase activity was greatest in the rhizosphere of Austrostipa and least in Janz. Plant growth and P uptake were positively correlated with microbial P, acid phosphatase activity and resin P in the rhizosphere, suggesting that microorganisms contribute to uptake of P by plants in this soil. Microbial community composition in the rhizosphere [analysed by fatty acid methylester (FAME) analysis and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE)] differed among genotypes, changed during plant development and was affected by P addition to the soil. Genotype-specific microbial community composition in the rhizosphere may have contributed to the observed differential capacity of plants to grow at low P availability.  相似文献

Aims

The efficient management of phosphorus (P) in cropping systems remains a challenge due to climate change. We tested how plant species access P pools in soils of varying P status (Olsen-P 3.2–17.6 mg?kg?1), under elevated atmosphere CO2 (eCO2).

Methods

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants were grown in rhizo-boxes containing Vertosol or Calcarosol soil, with two contrasting P fertilizer histories for each soil, and exposed to ambient (380 ppm) or eCO2 (700 ppm) for 6 weeks.

Results

The NaHCO3-extractable inorganic P (Pi) in the rhizosphere was depleted by both wheat and chickpea in all soils, but was not significantly affected by CO2 treatment. However, NaHCO3-extractable organic P (Po) accumulated, especially under eCO2 in soils with high P status. The NaOH-extractable Po under eCO2 accumulated only in the Vertosol with high P status. Crop species did not exhibit different eCO2-triggered capabilities to access any P pool in either soil, though wheat depleted NaHCO3-Pi and NaOH-Pi in the rhizosphere more than chickpea. Elevated CO2 increased microbial biomass C in the rhizosphere by an average of 21 %. Moreover, the size in Po fractions correlated with microbial C but not with rhizosphere pH or phosphatase activity.

Conclusion

Elevated CO2 increased microbial biomass in the rhizosphere which in turn temporally immobilized P. This P immobilization was greater in soils with high than low P availability.  相似文献

This study investigates the distribution of carboxylates and acid phosphatases as well as the depletion of different phosphorus (P) fractions in the rhizosphere of three legume crop species and a cereal, grown in a soil with two different levels of residual P. White lupin (Lupinus albus L.), field pea (Pisum sativum L.), faba bean (Vicia faba L.) and spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were grown in small sand-filled PVC tubes to create a dense root mat against a 38-μm mesh nylon cloth at the bottom, where it was in contact with the soil of interest contained in another tube. The soil had either not been fertilised (P0) or fertilised with 15 (P15) kg P ha−1 in previous years. The mesh size did not allow roots to grow into the soil, but penetration of root hairs and diffusion of nutrients and root exudates was possible, and a rhizosphere was established. At harvest, thin (1 mm) slices of this rhizosphere soil were cut, down to a 10-mm distance from the mesh surface. The rhizosphere of white lupin, particularly in the P0 treatment, contained citrate, mostly in the first 3 mm, with concentrations decreasing with distance from the root. Acid phosphatase activity was enhanced in the rhizosphere of all species, as compared with bulk soil, up to a distance of 4 mm. Phosphatase activity was highest in the rhizosphere of white lupin, followed by faba bean, field pea and wheat. Both citrate concentrations and phosphatase activities were higher in P0 compared with P15. The depletion of both inorganic (Pi) and organic (Po) phosphorus fractions was greatest at the root surface, and decreased gradually with distance from the root. The soil P fractions that were most depleted as a result of root activity were the bicarbonate-extractable (0.5 M) and sodium hydroxide-extractable (0.1 M) pools, irrespective of plant species. This study suggests that differences among the studied species in use of different P pools and in the width of the rhizosphere are relatively small.  相似文献

In the present study, five soil exoenzymes (dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase, neutral phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase) were investigated in rhizosphere of wetland plants (Iris wilsonii, Arundo donax, and Typha orientalis) treated with silver nanoparticles (0, 0.024, 0.24, 4.80, and 9.60 μg/g dry soil). It was found that Ag NPs were capable of inhibiting all exoenzyme activities tested in this study, with inhibitory effects especially obvious to higher Ag NPs level (4.80 and 9.60 μg/g dry soil). However, for lower Ag NPs concentration (0.024 μg/g dry soil), the adverse effects on exoenzymes was only found in T. orientalis rhizosphere, the exoenzyme activities in rhizosphere of I. wilsonii were less affected. This study suggested that high concentration Ag NPs could negatively affect all soil exoenzyme activities, while the impacts of low Ag NPs level on exoenzyme activities were mainly related to plant species.  相似文献

The changes in accumulation of two potential osmoprotectants (proline and glycine betaine), lipid peroxidation appraised as malondialdehyde (MDA) level, activities of key antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD: EC 1.15.1.1), catalase (CAT: EC 1.11.1.6), peroxidase (POD: EC 1.11.1.7), and glutathione reductase (GR: EC 1.6.4.2), and soluble protein profile in two cultivars of mulberry (S146 and Sujanpuri) differing in alkalinity (NaHCO3) tolerance were investigated at 2-month intervals up to 6-month growth under stress conditions. Varying levels of salinity–alkalinity developed in soil were 0, 30, 40, and 50 g of NaHCO3 kg?1 soil with pH 7.8, 9.1, 9.8, and 10.3, respectively. Alkali stress led to a consistent accumulation of proline and glycine betaine in mulberry leaves with time. The activities of leaf SOD, CAT, POD, and GR increased with increase in external salt concentration and pH. The increase in antioxidant enzyme activities was higher in cv. S146 than cv. Sujanpuri, whereas rate of lipid peroxidation measured in terms of MDA was higher in cv. Sujanpuri as compared to cv. S146. Protein profile revealed that some unknown proteins of low molecular mass (10–32.5 kDa) were induced by NaHCO3 stress, but differently in two cultivars.

Batch studies were conducted with Mn oxides (birnessite-hausmannite mixture, BHM) and samples of four soil series from the Mid-Atlantic region of the USA to determine effects of reducing organic acids, similar to those found in the rhizosphere, on the SeO3/SeO4 distribution. Jackland (Typic Hapludalf), Myersville (Ultic Hapludalf), Christiana (Aeric Paleaquult), and Evesboro (Typic Quartizipsamment) A and B horizon soil samples with and without prior Mn oxide reduction were incubated aerobically for 10 d with 0.1 mmol kg-1 SeO3 and 0 or 25 mmol kg-1 of ascorbic acid, gallic acid, oxalic acid, or citric acid. Selenite was also added to BHM (10 mmol kg-1) with 0 or 0.1 mmol kg-1 ascorbic acid. The availability of Se for plant uptake as a result of root-soil interactions was examined using growth chamber studies with barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings grown in 150-mL cone-shaped containers to maximize root-soil surface interactions and to create rhizosphere soil throughout the root zone. In the BHM system ascorbic acid increased oxidation of SeO3 to SeO4 to 33% of added SeO3. In the presence of ascorbic and gallic acids and Mn oxides, oxidation of SeO3 to SeO4 occurred in the B horizons of all the soils and in the A horizons of Jackland and Myersville soils. Removal of Mn oxides decreased the oxidation in some samples. Wheat and barley plants were able to accumulate up to 20 mol Se kg-1 from the Jackland soil when soluble Se was not measurable. The root-soil interactions in the Jackland soil with barley and wheat provided the plant with Se from insoluble sources. The results also indicate that Mn oxides coming in contact with reducing root exudates have a greater ability to oxidize SeO3 to SeO4. Thus, rhizosphere processes play an important role in the availability of Se for plant uptake.Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station Scientific Article A 6381.Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station Scientific Article A 6381.  相似文献

Bacterial inoculants of the commercially available plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) Arthrobacter mysorens 7, Flavobacterium sp. L30, and Klebsiella mobilis CIAM 880 were selected to obtain ecologically safe barley crop production on cadmium (Cd) polluted soils. All the PGPR immobilized 24–68% soluble cadmium from soil suspension. A. mysorens 7 and K. mobilis CIAM 880 were highly resistant to Cd and grew in up to 1 and 3 mmol CdCl2 on DAS medium respectively. All PGPR were able to fix nitrogen (276–1014 nmol mg–1 bacterial DW) and to produce indole acetic acid (IAA) (126–330 nmol mg–1 bacterial DW) or ethylene (4.6–13.5 nmol bacterial DW). All the PGPR actively colonized barley root system and rhizosphere and significantly stimulated root elongation of barley seedlings (up to 25%), growing on soil containing 5 or 15 mg Cd kg–1 of soil. Created in the simulation mathematical model confirms our hypothesis that PGPR beneficial effect on barley growing under Cd-stress is a complex process. One of mechanisms underlying this effect might be increase of bacterial migration from rhizoplane to rhizosphere, where PGPR bind soluble free Cd ions in biologically unavailable complex forms. Among the studied PGPR K. mobilis CIAM 880 was the most effective inoculant. Inoculation with K. mobilis CIAM 880 of barley plants growing on Cd contaminated soil (5 mg Cd kg–1 of soil) under field conditions increased by 120% grain yield and 2-fold decreased Cd content in barley grain. The results suggest that the using K. mobilis CIAM 880 is an effective way to increase the plant yield on poor and polluted areas.  相似文献

Ammonium-fed plants may acidify the rhizosphere and thus increaseavailability of Mn in calcareous alkaline soils. The importanceof N nutrition in the differential expression of tolerance toMn deficiency among cereal genotypes is not yet clear. Two factorialexperiments testing effects of the NH4-N/NO3-N ratio and Mnfertilization on growth of barley genotypes differing in toleranceto Mn deficiency were conducted in two calcareous alkaline soilsin pots in a controlled environment. In the soil containing80% CaCO3at pH 8.5, better root and shoot growth and highershoot Mn concentrations were achieved with nitrate supply, especiallyat lower rates of Mn fertilization. The Mn-efficient genotypeWeeah (tolerant of Mn deficiency) achieved better root and shootgrowth than Mn-inefficient Galleon barley (sensitive to Mn deficiency)regardless of experimental treatment. Fertilization with Mndid not influence total N concentration in barley roots andshoots. In the soil containing 5% CaCO3at pH 7.8, ammonium-fedplants had better root and shoot growth and, at shoot Mn concentrationsabove the critical level, Mn-inefficient Galleon performed betterthan Mn-efficient Weeah barley. It appears that differentialexpression of Mn efficiency among barley genotypes is not associatedwith differences in Mn availability expected to be producedby differential rhizosphere acidification as a response to differentforms of N supply. There is an apparent preference of locallyselected barley genotypes for nitrate nutrition when grown onthe highly calcareous alkaline soils of southern Australia. During plant growth, rhizosphere soils from fallow, barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv Esterel) and rape (Brassica napus L. cv Capitole) grown in a calcareous soil were sampled 5 times (every fortnight) from May to July 2001 at plant maturity. In order to estimate the impact of C derived from photosynthesis, the aerial parts of rape and barley in an area of 1 m2 were cut off about 2 cm from the soil surface, and left a fortnight before each sampling. Both soil arylsulphatase activity and a 1-week immobilization of S fertilizer in the sampled soils were then measured. The immobilization of S fertilizer was higher in fallow, followed by barley and rape rhizosphere soil. A strong positive linear correlation (r 2=0.71, P<0.001) was found between soil arylsulphatase activity and S fertilizer immobilized. Conversely, the mobilization of endogenous organic 35S (obtained after leaching free and adsorbed SO4 2–-35S by 0.009 M Ca(H2PO4)2) in the rhizosphere soil of each plant cover pooled at the end of the 5 samplings and materialized by ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. cv Massa) 35S uptake, was about 3 and 2 times higher, respectively, in rape and barley than in fallow rhizosphere soil. Accordingly, strong inverse polynomial relationships were observed between soil arylsulphatase activity and 35S uptake by the whole plant (r 2=0.904, P<0.02) and roots (r 2=0.970, P<0.01) of ryegrass. Plant cuttings affected both the immobilization and mobilization of S. It is concluded that the turnover of S freshly immobilized in rape rhizosphere soil was relatively high. Therefore, rape as a preceding crop in the rotations may have a beneficial effect by increasing S availability on the succeeding crop.  相似文献

Investigating the impact of plant species on sulphur (S) availability in the rhizosphere soil is agronomically important to optimize S fertilization. Bulk, rhizosphere soils and the roots of field-grown rape and barley were sampled 7 times (every fortnight), from March to June, at plant maturity. Root carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in water extract, along with soil SO42−-S, labile soil organic-C (HWC) and -N (HWN) in hot water extract, as well as soil arylsulphatase activity were then monitored. The average concentrations of both HWC and HWN were observed in the following decreasing order: rape rhizosphere soil >barley rhizosphere soil >bulk soil. In parallel, the average contents of water extractable-C and -N in rape roots were higher than those in barley roots. These results suggest that soil C and N contents in hot water extract (including rhizodeposition) were correlated with C and N released by roots. Great ARS activities found in rape rhizosphere soil were accompanied by great SO42−-S mineralization over time. Finally, bulk and rhizosphere soils of rape and barley were pooled from the seven samplings and incubated with the corresponding pooled root water-soluble C of both plant species and glucose-C. After 1 and 9 weeks, a greater net S mineralization (gross mineralization - immobilization) was observed with rape root water-soluble C than with barley root water-soluble C and glucose-C. Conjointly, we found a higher average value of ARS activity in rape rhizosphere than in barley rhizosphere soil. Our findings suggest that plant species, via their rhizodeposition, determine the dynamic of S in soil.  相似文献

The effects of adding larch (Larix kaempferi) leaf litter and nitrogen (N) on microbial activity and phosphorus (P) fractions in forest soil were examined in a short-term (28-d) laboratory incubation study. The soil was analyzed using a modified Hedley sequential extraction procedure and an acid phosphatase assay. The addition of larch litter and N increased the acid phosphatase activity and decreased the labile P (H2O-P + NaHCO3-P) concentration. Compared with addition of larch litter only, addition of both inputs decreased the proportion of inorganic P (Pi) and increased that of organic P (Po) in the NaOH fraction, bound to aluminum and iron oxides. The results of nutrient (carbon, N, or P) addition indicated that acid phosphatase was synthesized to acquire P. This study suggests that, in this forest soil, P in the H2O-P + NaHCO3-P and in the NaOH-Pi fractions was available for soil microorganisms to decompose leaf litter and that increase in microbial activity eventually translated in an increase in the proportion of Po found in the NaOH fraction in this forest soil.  相似文献

A rhizobox experiment was conducted to examine the P acquisition characteristics of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and white lupin (Lupinus albus L.) under P-deficient conditions. We aimed to identify whether cotton is physiologically efficient at acquiring P through release of protons, phosphatases or carboxylates. Plants were pre-grown in the upper compartment of rhizoboxes filled with a sand and soil mixture to create a dense root mat against a 53 μm polyester mesh. For each species, two P treatments (0 and 20 mg P kg?1) were applied to the upper compartment in order to create P-deficient and P-sufficient plants. At harvest, the upper compartment with intact plants was used for collection of root exudates while the lower soil compartment was sliced into thin layers (1 mm) parallel to the rhizoplane. Noticeable carboxylates release was only detected for white lupin. All P-deficient plants showed a capacity to acidify their rhizosphere soil to a distance of 3 mm. The activity of acid phosphatase was significantly enhanced in the soil-root interfaces of P-stressed cotton and wheat. Under P-deficient conditions, the P depletion zone of cotton from the lower soil compartment was narrowest (<2 mm) among the species. Phosphorus fractionation of the rhizosphere soil showed that P utilized by cotton mainly come from NaHCO3–Pi and NaOH–Po pools while wheat and white lupin markedly depleted NaHCO3–Pi and HCl–P pools, and the depletion zone extended to 3 mm. Wheat also depleted NaOH–Po to a significant level irrespective of P supply. The study suggests that acquisition of soil P is enhanced through P mobilization by root exudates for white lupin, and possibly proton release and extensive roots for wheat under P deficiency. In contrast, the P acquisition of cotton was associated with increased activity of phosphatases in rhizosphere soil.  相似文献

To study the influence of soil moisture on phosphorus (P) depletion in the rhizosphere, maize (Zea mays cv. Trak) was pre-grown in vermiculite filled-PVC tubes for 9 days and then the plants with the tubes were transplanted into soil columns maintained at two soil moisture levels () of 0.14 and 0.20 cm3 cm–3 for 10 days. The soil columns were separated at 1 cm depth by a nylon screen of 53 m inner mesh size, into 1 cm soil layer above and 3 cm soil column below screen. A root mat developed over the screen, but root hairs only could penetrate it. Regardless of the soil moisture level in the columns, and adequate and equal water and nutrients supply was maintained via wicks from an external nutrient solution to the plant roots in vermiculite. After 10 days, the soil columns were separated from the root mats, quickly frozen in liquid nitrogen and sliced into thin layers (0.2mm) using a refrigerated microtome to give soil samples at defined distances from the root mats for analyses. Lower soil moisture (=0.14) resulted in narrower and steeper depletion profile of 0.5 M NaHCO3 extractable P (NaHCO3-Pi) as compared to higher soil moisture (=0.20). Depletion of P in soil solution in the immediate vicinity of root mats did not differ much but the extension of the depletion zones was 0.10 cm at =0.14 and 0.20 cm at =0.20. The depletion up to 0.05cm with =0.14 and up to 0.07 cm with =0.20 was uniform, and may be attributed to the depletion in the root hair zone. Beyond the root hair zones, the theory of diffusion and mass flow was able to explain the observed differences in shape and extent of the P depletion profiles at the two soil moisture levels.  相似文献

Microbial Responses to Long-Term N Deposition in a Semiarid Grassland   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Nitrogen (N) enrichment of the biosphere is an expanding problem to which arid ecosystems may be particularly sensitive. In semiarid grasslands, scarce precipitation uncouples plant and microbial activities, and creates within the soil a spatial mosaic of rhizosphere and cyanobacterial crust communities. We investigated the impact of elevated N deposition on these soil microbial communities at a grama-dominated study site located incentral New Mexico (USA). The study plots were established in 1995 and receive 10 kg ha−1 year−1 of supplemental N in the form of NH4NO3. Soil samples were collected in July 2004, following 2 years of severe drought, and again in March 2005 following a winter of record high precipitation. Soils were assayed for potential activities of 20 extracellular enzymes and N2O production. The rhizosphere and crust-associated soils had peptidase and peroxidase potentials that were extreme in relation to those of temperate soils. N addition enhanced glycosidase and phosphatase activities and depressed peptidase. In contrast to temperate forest soils, oxidative enzyme activity did not respond to N treatment. Across sampling dates, extracellular enzyme activity responses correlated with inorganic N concentrations. N2O generation did not vary significantly with soil cover or N treatment. Microbial responses to N deposition in this semiarid grassland were distinct from those of forest ecosystems and appear to be modulated by inorganic N accumulation, which is linked to precipitation patterns.  相似文献
