Calanus finmarchicus is a key‐structural species of the North Atlantic polar biome. The species plays an important trophic role in subpolar and polar ecosystems as a grazer of phytoplankton and as a prey for higher trophic levels such as the larval stages of many fish species. Here, we used a recently developed ecological niche model to assess the ecological niche (sensu Hutchinson) of C. finmarchicus and characterize its spatial distribution. This model explained about 65% of the total variance of the observed spatial distribution inferred from an independent dataset (data of the continuous plankton recorder survey). Comparisons with other types of models (structured population and ecophysiological models) revealed a clear similarity between modeled spatial distributions at the scale of the North Atlantic. Contemporary models coupled with future projections indicated a progressive reduction of the spatial habitat of the species at the southern edge and a more pronounced one in the Georges Bank, the Scotian Shelf and the North Sea and a potential increase in abundance at the northern edge of its spatial distribution, especially in the Barents Sea. These major changes will probably lead to a major alteration of the trophodynamics of North Atlantic ecosystems affecting the trophodynamics and the biological carbon pump.  相似文献

Feeding and faecal pellet production of late copepodite stages of Calanus finmarchicus were measured in mixtures of cultured autotrophic and heterotrophic food, as well as in a natural post-bloom plankton assemblage, in order to evaluate food selection and its potential effect on sedimentation of organic matter. Calanus finmarchicus consistently selected for diatoms, both in mixtures with the heterotrophic dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina, and in natural seston containing dinoflagellates, ciliates and flagellates. Similarly, the filtration, ingestion and faecal pellet production rates were significantly higher feeding on diatoms than when feeding on other food species. Calanus finmarchicus selection appeared relatively inflexible, so that changes in seston composition induced large changes in diet quantity and composition. Our results support the traditional view of C. finmarchicus as a major grazer of diatoms, and suggest potentially high post-bloom faecal pellet production rates.  相似文献

The copepod Calanus finmarchicus is the major contributor to zooplankton biomass in the North Atlantic and Norwegian Sea, but recent studies have shown a 70% decrease in abundance as well as a northward shift in the species’ range. Insights into dispersal capabilities gained from population genetic studies will be crucial in predicting the response of C. finmarchicus communities to climate change and, consequently, we have developed a set of expressed sequence tag‐derived microsatellite markers to allow fine‐scale elucidation of population structuring and dispersal. Ten polymorphic markers displayed between two and 19 alleles, with levels of expected heterozygosity ranging from 0.044 to 0.924.  相似文献

The cool-water copepod Calanus finmarchicus is a key species in North Atlantic marine ecosystems since it represents an important food resource for the developmental stages of several fish of major economic value. Over the last 40 years, however, data from the Continuous Plankton Recorder survey have highlighted a 70 per cent reduction in C. finmarchicus biomass, coupled with a gradual northward shift in the species's distribution, which have both been linked with climate change. To determine the potential for C. finmarchicus to track changes in habitat availability and maintain stable effective population sizes, we have assessed levels of gene flow and dispersal in current populations, as well as using a coalescent approach together with palaeodistribution modelling to elucidate the historical population demography of the species over previous changes in Earth's climate. Our findings indicate high levels of dispersal and a constant effective population size over the period 359,000-566,000 BP and suggest that C. finmarchicus possesses the capacity to track changes in available habitat, a feature that may be of crucial importance to the species's ability to cope with the current period of global climate change.  相似文献

Spatial dynamics of phytoplankton blooms and Calanus finmarchicuswere analysed in a large-scale oceanic area (10274 km) in theNE Norwegian Sea (69–71°N, 12–16°E). Dataon hydrography, chlorophyll a (Chl a) and mesozooplankton (netsamples and Optical Plankton Counter) were collected in surfacewaters (0–30 m) during spring and early summer 2003. Spatialpatterns of copepodites in relation to hydrography and Chl aconcentration were analysed by constrained correspondence analysis.Distribution of phytoplankton and C. finmarchicus was highlypatchy. The overwintering generation (CV and adult females)had highest abundances in areas with phytoplankton blooms, whereasthe recruiting cohort (CII + CIII copepodites) was found inwater parcels with low Chl a concentration. Differences in recruitmentdynamics between the southern and northern Norwegian Sea arediscussed. Our data confirm the importance of phytoplanktonspring blooms in initiating the recruitment of C. finmarchicus.This opens up for a future mapping of sea surface chlorophyllto depict the large-scale variability in the demography of C.finmarchicus during the reproductive season in the NorwegianSea.  相似文献

Gut pigment and abundance of the female Calanus euxinus (Hulsemann) weremeasured from several water layers (defined by density values), with3–5 h intervals during 30 h and 21 h at a station in the southwesternBlack Sea in April and in September 1995, respectively. The female C.euxinus was observed to begin migration to the upper phytoplankton-richlayer approximately 3 or 4 hours before the sunset. Only a fraction of thefemale Calanus population (0.2% in April and 3.6% inSeptember) did not migrate but remained at the depth of the oxygen minimumzone during the nighttime. The migrating population was determined to havespent 7.5 h in the euphotic zone in April and 10.5 h in September. Thegrazing rate of female Calanus euxinus was measured from the gut contentdata collected from the layers which contain the euphotic zone. Thepercentage of primary production grazed by the female C. euxinus wascalculated as 14.5% in April and 9.5% in September. The spatial distribution and annual cycle of abundance for thelate-stage copepodites of the calanoid copepod Calanus finmarchicusare described for the shelf and slope waters of the Middle AtlanticBight (MAB), a subregion of the US Northeast large marine ecosystem.Samples were collected with bongo nets from 1977 to 2001 onbroad-scale surveys of the region and from a continuous planktonrecorder (CPR) towed at 10-m depth along a route that traversedthe area. The copepod’s abundance in shelf waters increasedrapidly in early spring and reached maximum levels in May–June.It declined slowly thereafter, until a minor secondary pulseoccurred in late autumn, which was followed by the annual winterlow. Slope water abundance of C. finmarchicus peaked in Apriland was virtually absent there at 10-m depth from July throughthe following February. The two samplers, both portrayed similarhigh interannual abundance variability with no long-term trendevident for the 25-year period. Cluster analysis pinpointedthree shelf areas with similar abundance patterns, one of whichwas a region of high density located in the northeastern offshorewaters. Evidence is presented that indicates the source of thishigh abundance is likely from the populations that overwinterin deep water basins of the Gulf of Maine (GOM). The copepod’sinterannual abundance variability was found to be negativelycorrelated with water temperature and unrelated to fluctuationsof the North Atlantic oscillation (NAO) index.  相似文献

Modeling the population dynamics of patchily distributed species is a challenge, particularly when inference must be based on incomplete and small data sets such as those from most species of conservation concern. Here, we develop an open population spatial capture–recapture (SCR) model with sex-specific detection and population dynamics parameters to investigate population trend and sex-specific population dynamics of a capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) population in Switzerland living in eight distinct forest patches totaling 22 km2 within a region of 908 km2 and sampled via scat collection. Our model accounts for the patchy distribution of habitat and the uncertainty introduced by collecting data only every third year, while producing sex by patch population trajectories. The estimated population trajectory was a decline of 2% per year; however, the sex specificity of the model revealed a decline in the male population only, with no evidence of decline in the female population. The decline observed in males was explained by the demography of just two of the eight patches. Our study highlights the flexibility of open population SCR models for assessing population trajectories through time and across space and emphasizes the desirability of estimating sex-stratified population trends especially in species of conservation concern.  相似文献

We studied the effects of the parasitic dinoflagellate Ellobiopsis chattoni on the winter mortality of natural population of the calanoid copepod Calanus finmarchicus in the Norwegian Sea (materials was collected in March-April 1989 and September 1990). Dinoflagellate infection occurred during autumn (the infection rates of copepods with E. chattoni was 15%, as average). Invasion of armoured catfish, Pterygoplichthys spp., is a major threat to global aquatic biodiversity, and developing effective strategies for their control and eradication is both a concern and a research priority. A length-based population assessment of invasive Pterygoplichthys pardalis in southern India, a hotspot for endemic aquatic biodiversity, indicated that rapid growth, high growth performance index and continuous recruitment have aided their successful invasion. Increasing fishing pressure on the adults is not adequate for population management, and only targeting young individuals (<30 cm) will result in overexploitation and population collapse.  相似文献

Wildlife agencies typically attempt to manage carnivore numbers in localized game management units through hunting, and do not always consider the potential influences of immigration and emigration on the outcome of those hunting practices. However, such a closed population structure may not be an appropriate model for management of carnivore populations where immigration and emigration are important population parameters. The closed population hypothesis predicts that high hunting mortality will reduce numbers and densities of carnivores and that low hunting mortality will increase numbers and densities. By contrast, the open population hypothesis predicts that high hunting mortality may not reduce carnivore densities because of compensatory immigration, and low hunting mortality may not result in more carnivores because of compensatory emigration. Previous research supported the open population hypothesis with high immigration rates in a heavily hunted (hunting mortality rate=0.24) cougar population in northern Washington. We test the open population hypothesis and high emigration rates in a lightly hunted (hunting mortality rate=0.11) cougar population in central Washington by monitoring demography from 2002 to 2007. We used a dual sex survival/fecundity Leslie matrix to estimate closed population growth and annual census counts to estimate open population growth. The observed open population growth rate of 0.98 was lower than the closed survival/fecundity growth rates of 1.13 (deterministic) and 1.10 (stochastic), and suggests a 12–15% annual emigration rate. Our data support the open population hypothesis for lightly hunted populations of carnivores. Low hunting mortality did not result in increased numbers and densities of cougars, as commonly believed because of compensatory emigration.  相似文献

Few studies have quantified the dynamics of recovering populations of large raptors using long‐term, spatially explicit studies. Using data collected over 37 years in the western Italian Alps, we assessed the trends in distribution, abundance, fecundity and breeding population structure of Golden Eagles Aquila chrysaetos. Using the spatial distribution of territory centroids in 2007, we found that the spatial distribution of eagle territories was over‐dispersed up to 3 km. Although population size and total productivity increased from 1972 to 2008, the proportion of pairs that laid eggs showed a strong decline, falling to no more than 50% after 2003. On average, 15% of successful nests produced two fledglings, and productivity also declined over time. No significant relationship between population growth rate and total population size was detected, but the percentage of pairs that bred and breeding success showed evidence of density dependence, as they declined significantly with increasing density. Our results suggest that density dependence, operating across heterogeneous habitats, is currently regulating this population, while the carrying capacity may still be increasing. This may explain the apparent paradox of reduced breeding effort despite increasing total productivity.  相似文献

The calanoid copepod Calanus sinicus was reared in the laboratory under excess food conditions, and its development and growth rates were measured at various temperatures. Egg development time (DH, days) was dependent on temperature (T °C), and was expressed as DH = 55.3 (T + 0.7)–1.44. Post-embryonic development followed the equiproportional rule. The stage duration was short in NI and NII, but compensatingly longer in NIII. Between NIV and CII, it was nearly isochronal, and beyond CII, it tended to increase gradually. The time from egg to adult was expressed as DCVI = 1258 (T + 0.7)–1.44. The specific growth rate was also temperature-dependent and highest from CI to CIII, intermediate from NII to CI and from CIII to CV, and lowest from CV to CVI. The growth rates of C. sinicus are higher than those of co-occurring small copepods such as Paracalanus, Acartia and Microsetella.  相似文献

Samples from the southern California sector of the California Current System were examined to test for interannual changes in winter–spring abundance of the planktonic copepod, Calanus pacificus, coincident with the 1992–93 and 1958–59 El Niños, each evaluated relative to immediately preceding years, and for interdecadal change (the early 1990s relative to the late 1950s). Calanus was anomalously rare in both of the El Niño periods, as was macrozooplankton, but (unlike macrozooplanktonic biomass) was not rarer in the early 1990s than in the late 1950s. The El Niño anomalies in Calanus’s abundance and macrozooplanktonic biomass were not spatially correlated on the mesoscale, implying that different proximate ecological causes may dominate at this scale.  相似文献

Warmer climates are predicted to increase bark beetle outbreak frequency, severity, and range. Even in favorable climates, however, outbreaks can decelerate due to resource limitation, which necessitates the inclusion of competition for limited resources in analyses of climatic effects on populations. We evaluated several hypotheses of how climate impacts mountain pine beetle reproduction using an extensive 9‐year dataset, in which nearly 10,000 trees were sampled across a region of approximately 90,000 km2, that was recently invaded by the mountain pine beetle in Alberta, Canada. Our analysis supports the hypothesis of a positive effect of warmer winter temperatures on mountain pine beetle overwinter survival and provides evidence that the increasing trend in minimum winter temperatures over time in North America is an important driver of increased mountain pine beetle reproduction across the region. Although we demonstrate a consistent effect of warmer minimum winter temperatures on mountain pine beetle reproductive rates that is evident at the landscape and regional scales, this effect is overwhelmed by the effect of competition for resources within trees at the site level. Our results suggest that detection of the effects of a warming climate on bark beetle populations at small spatial scales may be difficult without accounting for negative density dependence due to competition for resources.  相似文献

The minimal model of the “relative nonlinearity” type fluctuation-maintained coexistence is investigated. The competing populations are affected by an environmental white noise. With quadratic density dependence, the long-term growth rates of the populations are determined by the average and the variance of the (fluctuating) total density. At most two species can coexist on these two “regulating” variables; competitive exclusion would ensue in a constant environment. A numerical study of the expected time until extinction of any of the two species reveals that the criterion of mutual invasibility predicts the parameter range of long-term coexistence correctly in the limit of zero extinction threshold. However, any extinction threshold consistent with a realistic population size will allow only short-term coexistence. Therefore, our simulations question the biological relevance of mutual invasibility, as a sufficient condition of coexistence, for large density fluctuations. We calculate the average and the variance of the fluctuating density of the coexisting populations analytically via the moment-closure approximation; the results are reasonably close to the simulated behavior. Based on this treatment, robustness of coexistence is studied in the limit of infinite population size. We interpret the results of this analysis in the context of necessity of niche segregation with respect to the regulating variables using a framework theory published earlier.  相似文献
