We investigated the geometric representations underlying the perception of 2-D contour curvature. 88 arcs representing lower and upper halves of concentric circles, or halves of ellipses derived mathematically through planar projection by affinity with the circles, a special case of Newton's transform, were generated to produce curved line segments with negative and positive curvature and varying sagitta (sag) and/or aspect ratio. Aspect ratio is defined here as the ratio between the sagitta and the chord-length of a given arc. The geometric properties of the arcs suggest a regrouping into four structural models. The 88 stimuli were presented in random order to 16 observers eight of whom were experienced in the mathematical and visual analysis of 2-D curvature ('expert observers'), and eight of whom were not ('non-expert observers'). Observers had to give a number, on a psychophysical scale from 0 to 10, that was to reflect the magnitude of curvature they perceived in a given arc. The results show that the subjective magnitude of curvature increases exponentially with the aspect ratio and linearly with the sagitta of the arcs for both experts and nonexperts. Statistical analysis of the correlation coefficients of linear fits to individual data represented on a logarithmic scale reveals significantly higher correlation coefficients for aspect ratio than for sagitta. The difference is not significant when curves with the longest chords only (7 degrees -10 degrees ) are considered. The geometric model that produces the best psychometric functions is described by a combination of arcs of vertically and horizontally oriented ellipses, indicating that perceptual sensations of 2-D contour curvature are based on geometric representations that suggest properties of 3-D structures. A 'buckled bar model' is shown to optimally account for the perceptual data of all observers with the exception of one expert. His perceptual data can be linked to a more analytical, less 'naturalistic' representation originating from a specific perceptual experience, which is discussed. It is concluded that the structural properties of 'real' objects are likely to determine even the most basic geometric representations underlying the perception of curvature in 2-D images. A specific perceptual learning experience may engender changes in such representations.  相似文献

The interest in the relationship between articular cartilage and the structural and functional properties of peri-articular bone relates to the intimate contact that exists between these tissues in joints that are susceptible to the development of osteoarthritis (OA). The demonstration in several animal models that osteoporosis and decreased bone tissue modulus leads to an increased propensity for the development of post-traumatic OA is paradoxical in light of the extensive epidemiological literature indicating that individuals with high systemic bone mass, assessed by bone mineral density, are at increased risk for OA. These observations underscore the need for further studies to define the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the interaction between subchondral bone and articular cartilage and for applying this information to the development of therapeutic interventions to improve the outcomes in patients with OA.  相似文献

For several decades, a dose of 25 kGy of gamma irradiation has been recommended for terminal sterilization of medical products, including bone allografts. Practically, the application of a given gamma dose varies from tissue bank to tissue bank. While many banks use 25 kGy, some have adopted a higher dose, while some choose lower doses, and others do not use irradiation for terminal sterilization. A revolution in quality control in the tissue banking industry has occurred in line with development of quality assurance standards. These have resulted in significant reductions in the risk of contamination by microorganisms of final graft products. In light of these developments, there is sufficient rationale to re-establish a new standard dose, sufficient enough to sterilize allograft bone, while minimizing the adverse effects of gamma radiation on tissue properties. Using valid modifications, several authors have applied ISO standards to establish a radiation dose for bone allografts that is specific to systems employed in bone banking. These standards, and their verification, suggest that the actual dose could be significantly reduced from 25 kGy, while maintaining a valid sterility assurance level (SAL) of 10−6. The current paper reviews the methods that have been used to develop radiation doses for terminal sterilization of medical products, and the current trend for selection of a specific dose for tissue banks.  相似文献

A number of authors have pointed to “convergent evolution” as evidence for the central role of natural selection in shaping predictable trajectories of macroevolution. However, there are numerous conceptual and empirical difficulties that arise in broadly appealing to the frequency of homoplasy as evidence for a non-contingently constrained adaptational design space. Most important is the need to distinguish between convergent (externally constrained) and parallel (internally constrained) evolution, and to consider how the respective frequencies of these significantly different sources of homoplasy affect a strong adaptationist view of life. In this paper, I critically evaluate Simon Conway Morris’s use of the homoplasy literature to support his argument for a non-contingent, counterfactually stable account of macroevolutionary pattern. In so doing, I offer a conception of parallelism which avoids the charge that it differs from convergence merely in degree and not in kind. I argue that although organisms sharing a homoplastic trait will also share varying degrees of homology, it is the underlying developmental homology with respect to the generators directly causally responsible for the homoplastic event that defines parallel evolution and non-arbitrarily distinguishes it from convergence. The notion of “screening-off” is used to distinguish the proximal generators of a homoplastic trait from its more distal genetic causes (such as a master control gene).

Evidence suggests that female preferences may sometimes arise through sensory bias, and that males may subsequently evolve traits that increase their conspicuousness to females. Here, we ask whether indirect selection, arising through genetic associations (linkage disequilibrium) during the sexual selection that sensory bias imposes, can itself influence the evolution of preference strength. Specifically, we use population genetic models to consider whether or not modifiers of preference strength can spread under different ecological conditions when female mate choice is driven by sensory bias. We focus on male traits that make a male more conspicuous in certain habitats-and thus both more visible to predators and more attractive to females-and examine modifiers of the strength of preference for conspicuous males. We first solve for the rate of spread of a modifier that strengthens preference within an environmentally uniform population; we illustrate that this spread will be extremely slow. Second, we used a series of simulations to consider the role of habitat structure and movement on the evolution of a modifier of preference strength, using male color polymorphisms as a case study. We find that in most cases, indirect selection does not allow the evolution of stronger or weaker preferences for sensory bias. Only in a "two-island" model, where there is restricted migration between different patches that favor different male phenotypes, did we find that preference strength could evolve. The role of indirect selection in the evolution of sensory bias is of particular interest because of ongoing speculation regarding the role of sensory bias in the evolution of reproductive isolation.  相似文献

In this paper, we draw a link between cortical intrinsic curvature and the distributions of tangential connection lengths. We suggest that differential rates of surface expansion not only lead to intrinsic curvature of the cortical sheet, but also to differential inter-neuronal spacing. We propose that there follows a consequential change in the profile of neuronal connections: specifically an enhancement of the tendency towards proportionately more short connections. Thus, the degree of cortical intrinsic curvature may have implications for short-range connectivity.  相似文献

Both immobilized enzymes (IME) and immobilized cells (IMC) are acceptable as the biocatalysts essential for the attainment of rapid rates of bioconversion in bioreactors. IMC can display higher than expected cellular permeability whilst IME can exhibit high catalytic constant (kcat/Km) despite limitations on substrate utilisation due to an unstired diffusion layer of solvent. Scale-down switching from IMC to IME involves the replacement of high-volume biotechnology by low-volume biotechnology, sometimes using IME mimics in partially non-aqueous solvent systems. Highly purified IME systems covalently immobilised to particles of, for instance, microcrystalline cellulose or porous glass, can retain both the hydrophilic and hydrophobic intermediate products in situ of the chosen sequence of enzyme reactions. These bioconversions, therefore, are as efficient as those with IMC where enzymes are often particle- or membrane-bound so that even hydrophilic intermediates are not released rapidly into solution. This mimicry of in vivo biosynthetic pathways that are compartmentalised in vivo (e.g. of lysosomes, mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum) can replace larger IMC by IME especially in application of up to 2700 cytochromes P450 isoforms in bioprocessing. In silico investigation of appropriate model IME systems, in comparison with IMC systems, will be needed to define the optimal bioreactor configuration and parameters of operation, such as pH, T and oxygen mass transfer rate (OTR). The application solely of hazop (applied hazard and operability concepts) may, nevertheless, not be recommended to replace fully the in silico and real-lab pilot-scale and scale studies. Here, food-safe bioprocessing has to be achieved without incorporation of recognised biohazards; especially in the form of unacceptable levels of toxic metals that promote a risk-analysis uncertainty.  相似文献

The recent hypothesis of a compressed backbone state as the origin of the intrinsic curvature in DNA suggested that it could result from a geometric mismatch between the partial specific backbone length and optimal base stacking. It predicted that the long-known phenomenon of static curvature in A-tract repeats may be affected by single-stranded breaks (nicks) that should relax it in a position-dependent manner. To check the aforementioned prediction, a special series of nicked DNA fragments was prepared from two mother sequences, one including phased A-tract repeats and the other being random, and the curvature was probed experimentally by gel mobility assays. In agreement with earlier reports, single-stranded breaks produce virtually no effect upon the gel mobility of the random sequence DNA. In contrast, for nicked A-tract fragments, the curvature exhibits regular periodical behavior depending upon the position of the strand break with respect to the overall bend. The modulations are rather strong, with the maximal increase in gel mobility exceeding 30% of the initial difference with respect to the reference straight DNA. This effect has not been encountered before, and it is opposite the usual nonspecific retardation caused by single-stranded breaks. The amplitude of the observed modulation is increased for phosphorylated nicks and in the presence of Mg(2+) ions.  相似文献

It is now thought that the critical property of bone is strength rather than weight, and that control of bone strength is mainly exercised through the effect of the mechanical loads brought to bear on bone. Muscle contraction places the greatest physiological load on bone, and so the strength of bone must be adapted to muscle strength (the functional muscle-bone unit). The Utah paradigm of skeletal physiology [J Hum Biol 1998;10:599-605] provides a model of bone development that describes how bone structure is regulated by local mechanical effects that can be adjusted by the effects of hormones. The DONALD (Dortmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed) study analysed the interaction between the muscle and bone systems in males and females before and during puberty. This study found that differences between the genders in bone adaptation during puberty are at least partly driven by the influence of oestrogen in females. Testosterone seems to have no direct relevant effect on bone during puberty, but may be implicated in the greater amount of muscle mass achieved in boys compared with girls.  相似文献

The statistical technique of analysis of variance is often used by biologists as a measure of the relative strength or importance of causal factors. I argue that it is a tool ill-suited to this purpose, on several grounds. I suggest a superior alternative and outline its implications. I finish with a diagnosis of the source of error-an unwitting inheritance of bad philosophy that now requires the remedy of better philosophy.  相似文献

This review paper attempts to provide an overview in the fabrication and application of organic–inorganic based composites in the field of local drug delivery for bone. The concept of local drug delivery exists for a few decades. However, local drug delivery in bone and specially application of composites for delivery of drugs to bone is an area for potential research interest in the recent time. The advantages attained by an organic–inorganic composite when compared to its individual components include their ability to release drug, adopting to the natural environment and supporting local area until complete bone regeneration, which make them carriers of interest for local drug delivery for bone.  相似文献

Six sister populations of Drosophila melanogaster kept under identical environmental conditions for greater than 600 generations were reciprocally crossed to investigate the incidence of population divergence in allopatry. Population crosses directly influenced fitness, mating frequency, and sperm competition patterns. Changes in both female remating rate and the outcome of male sperm competition (P1, P2) in response to foreign males were consistent with intersexual coevolution. Moreover, seven of the 30 crosses between foreign mates resulted in significant reductions in female fitness, whereas two resulted in significant increases, compared to local matings. This tendency for foreign males to reduce female fitness may be interpreted as evidence for either sexually antagonistic coevolution or the disruption of mutualistic interactions. However, instances in which female fitness improved via cohabitation with foreign males may better reveal sexual conflict, signalling release from the cost of interacting with locally adapted males. By this metric, female reproduction in D. melanogaster is strongly constrained by local adaptation by males, a situation that would promote antagonistic coevolution between the sexes. We conclude that sexual selection can promote population differentiation in allopatry and that sexual conflict is likely to have played a role in population differentiation in this study system.  相似文献
