Alpha, beta and gamma are three components of species diversity. Knowing these attributes in floodplain lake phytoplankton communities is vital when selecting conservation areas. Species diversity is commonly used with other taxonomic groups, but rarely with phytoplankton. We compared the number of phytoplankton species (alpha diversity) from 21 Middle Araguaia River floodplain lakes in the 2000 and 2001 rainy and dry seasons. From these samples we estimated complete survey species richness (gamma diversity), quantified differences in species composition between lakes (beta diversity) and assessed the influence of abiotic variables on beta diversity. We recorded a total of 577 taxa. The Sjack1 estimator indicated that 62.31% of taxa were sampled in the 2000 rainy and 67.65% dry seasons, and 68.36% in the 2001 rainy and 73.5% dry seasons. In almost all seasons, alpha diversity negatively correlated with latitude. Beta diversity (β-1) was higher in high water periods, especially in 2000. This may have been caused by isolated heavy rainfall, which would have increased environmental heterogeneity and raised beta diversity. DCA showed differences in phytoplankton composition between rainy and dry seasons in 2000 and 2001, reflecting the influence of flood pulses on phytoplankton composition. The Mantel test indicated spatial distribution patterns where geographically more distant lakes had less-similar phytoplankton communities. Handling editor: J. Padisak  相似文献

Background and aims

The Tehuacán-Cuitcatlán reserve is an area of unique plant biodiversity mostly in the form of xerophytes, with exceptionally high numbers of rare and endemic species. This endemism results partly from the characteristics of the climate of this area, with two distinct seasons: rainy and dry seasons. Although rhizosphere communities must be critical in the function of this ecosystem, understanding the structure of these communities is currently limited. This is the first molecular study of the microbial diversity present in the rhizosphere of Mamillaria carnea.

Methods

Total DNA was obtained from soil and rhizosphere samples at three locations in the Tehuacán Cuicatlán Reserve, during dry and rainy seasons. Temperature gradient gel electrophoresisis (TGGE) fingerprinting, 16S rRNA gene libraries and pyrosequencing were used to investigate bacterial diversity in the rhizosphere of Mammillaria carnea and changes in the microbial community between seasons.

Results

Deep sequencing data reveal a higher level of biodiversity in the dry season. Statistical analyses based on these data indicates that the composition of the bacterial community differed between both seasons affecting to members of the phyla Acidobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Plantomycetes, Actinobacteria and Firmicutes. In addition, the depth of sequencing performed (>24,000 reads) enables detection of changes in the relative abundance of lower bacterial taxa (novel bacterial phylotypes) indicative of the increase of specific bacterial populations due to the season.

Conclusions

This study states the basis of the bacterial diversity in the rhizosphere of cacti in semi-arid environments and it is a sequence-based demonstration of community shifts in different seasons.  相似文献

1. The influence of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus enrichment on phytoplankton photosynthesis was investigated in Lakes Bonney (east and west lobes), Hoare, Fryxell and Vanda, which lie in the ablation valleys adjacent to McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Bioassay experiments were conducted during the austral summer on phytoplankton populations just beneath the permanent ice cover in all lakes and on populations forming deep-chlorophyll maxima in the east and west lobes of Lake Bonney. 2. Phytoplankton photosynthesis in surface and mid-depth (13 m) samples from both lobes of Lake Bonney were stimulated significantly (P < 0.01) by phosphorus enrichment (2 μM) with further stimulation by simultaneous phosphorus plus NH4+ (20 μM) enrichment. Similar trends were observed in deeper waters (18 m) from the east lobe of Lake Bonney, although they were not statistically significant at P < 0.05. Photosynthesis in this lake was never enhanced by the addition of 20 μM NH4+ alone. Simultaneous addition of phosphorus plus nitrogen stimulated photosynthesis significantly (P < 0.01) in both Lake Hoare and Lake Fryxell. No nutrient response occurred in Lake Vanda, where activity in nutrient-enriched samples was below unamended controls; results from Lake Vanda are suspect owing to excessively long sample storage in the field resulting from logistic constraints. 3. Ambient dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) (NH4++ NO2?+ NO3?): soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) ratios partially support results from bioassay experiments indicating strong phosphorus deficiency in Lake Bonney and nitrogen deficiency in Lakes Hoare and Fryxell. DIN : SRP ratios also imply phosphorus deficiency in Lake Vanda, although not as strong as in Lake Bonney. Particulate carbon (PC): particulate nitrogen (PN) ratios all exceed published ratios for balanced phytoplankton growth, indicative of nitrogen deficiency. 4. Vertical nutrient profiles in concert with low advective flux, indicate that new (sensu Dugdale & Goering, 1967) phytoplankton production in these lakes is supported by upward diffusion of nutrients from deep nutrient pools. This contention was tested by computing upward DIN : SRP flux ratios across horizontal planes located immediately beneath each chlorophyll maximum and about 2 m beneath the ice (to examine flux to the phytoplankton immediately below the ice cover). These flux ratios further corroborated nutrient bioassay results and bulk DIN : SRP ratios indicating phosphorus deficiency in Lakes Bonney and Vanda and potential nitrogen deficiency in Lakes Hoare and Fryxell. 5. Neither biochemical reactions nor physical processes appear to be responsible for differences in nutrient deficiency among the study lakes. The differences may instead be related to conditions which existed before or during the evolution of the lakes.  相似文献

Deforestation changes the hydrological, geomorphological, and biochemical states of streams by decreasing evapotranspiration on the land surface and increasing runoff, river discharge, erosion and sediment fluxes from the land surface. Deforestation has removed about 55% of the native vegetation and significantly altered the hydrological and morphological characteristics of an 82,632 km2 watershed of the Araguaia River in east-central Brazil. Observed discharge increased by 25% from the 1970s to the 1990s and computer simulations suggest that about 2/3 of the increase is from deforestation, the remaining 1/3 from climate variability. Changes of this scale are likely occurring throughout the 2,000,000 km2 savannah region of central Brazil.  相似文献

The phytoplankton community of river–floodplain ecosystems shows significant temporal fluctuations in response to hydrosedimentological regime. The aim of our study was analyze the effect of the hydrosedimentological regime of the Paraná and Ivinhema Rivers on the interannual variation in the composition, biovolume and functional groups of phytoplankton in an isolated floodplain lake (Ventura Lagoon) of the Ivinhema River State Park, located in the Upper Paraná River floodplain (Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil). Samples of phytoplankton were taken at the sub-surface of the pelagic zone of the lake from February 2000 to December 2005. A total of 132 taxa were recorded, and the species that represented greater contributions to the phytoplankton biovolume were grouped into five functional groups (FG) (H1, H2, M, MP and Y). The distribution of the FGs were linked to the high and low water periods in Ventura lagoon. Functional groups MP and Y were the highest contributors to the phytoplankton biovolume during the high water periods, whereas FGs H1, H2 and M contributed more during the low water periods. The FGs were also useful for the interannual characterization of Ventura Lagoon by taking the changes caused by climatological factors into account. There was a strong dominance of Cyanobacteria (H2 and M) in 2000 and 2001 (La Niña periods) coincident with low precipitation and low hydrometric levels of the Paraná and Ivinhema Rivers and, consequently, lower water depths of Ventura Lagoon. In 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 (El Niño periods), when higher precipitation, higher hydrometric levels, higher discharge of the Paraná and Ivinhema Rivers and an increased depth of Ventura Lagoon were observed, Cyanobacteria (H1, H2 and M) were dominant, followed by Bacillariophyceae (MP) and Cryptophyceae (Y). These results reported here corroborate the utility of using FGs as indicators of interannual and seasonal variability in floodplain lakes.  相似文献

The distributions of the fish species were examined in relation to environmental variables, to evaluate the effects of environmental degradation on the fish community of Batata Lake, a typical Amazonian clearwater lake. From 1979 to 1989, tailings composed of water and clay, extracted from bauxite by water jets, were discharged into Batata Lake. The tailings spread into about 30% of the lake’s area, where the level of the lake bottom rose and turbidity increased. In the present study, multivariate analyses were performed on data for environmental parameters and fish density and biomass. Fish were collected with gillnets during the annual hydrological cycle (filling, flood, drawdown and dry periods), in the silted area, the partly silted area (intermediate) and the natural area. Values of the Shannon index, density and biomass were compared among areas and periods to evaluate the effects of the tailings on community structure. Sediment resuspension, which reduces transparency, is accentuated in shallow water, and was the main factor regulating differences in the community structure between the natural and silted areas. The decrease in transparency occurs mainly during the filling period in the silted area and during the low-water period in the silted and intermediate areas, when sediment resuspension increases concentrations of nutrients and chlorophyll-a. The strong influence of migratory and piscivore species in low-transparency waters is likely associated with the greater bacterioplankton productivity and turnover rate observed by other authors in the silted area, increasing the importance of the heterotrophic food chain in Batata Lake. Reduction of transparency in the silted area was a selective factor for fish species. The death of part of the flooded forest vegetation was decisive in lowering densities of the igapó-associated species in the silted area. The unconsolidated substrate, the death of part of the igapó forest and the negative effects of low transparency – inhibiting resident visually oriented species in the affected areas – are the main factors causing the low diversity in the silted area as a whole. The correlations between CPUEs, conductivity and nutrients and chlorophyll-a concentrations do not appear to reflect cause–effect relationships, indicating that these environmental parameters are poor predictors of fish density in Batata Lake.  相似文献

Long-term time-series of the eutrophic Dutch lakes Veluwemeer and Wolderwijd were subject to ordination and clustering by means of non-supervised artificial neural networks (ANN). A combination of bottom-up and top-down eutrophication control measures has been implemented in both lakes since 1979. Dividing time-series data from 1976 to 1993 into three distinctive management periods has facilitated a comparative analysis of the two lakes regarding both the seasonal and long-term dynamics in response to eutrophication control. Results of the study have demonstrated that non-supervised ANN are an alternative technique: (1) to elucidate causal relationships of complex ecological processes, and (2) to reveal long-term behaviours of ecosystems in response to different management approaches. It has been shown that external nutrient control combined with food web manipulation have turned both lakes from nitrogen to phosphorus limitation, and from blue-green algae to diatom and green algae dominance.  相似文献

In this study we compare phytoplankton community similarity between sites in a semiarid floodplain wetland over a 6-year period with variable hydroperiod and connectivity regimes. Phytoplankton communities showed a relatively high site idiosyncrasy during most parts of the study; however, during situations of low connectivity when individual sites were highly fragmented, phytoplankton communities occasionally became more similar between sites. This suggests that mass effects related to dispersal-mediated processes could be important. Viewed from a metacommunity perspective, phytoplankton community assembly at the wetland scale involves complex hierarchical processes that can act independently at different spatial extents. The main conclusion of this study is that the well-known effects of environmental variability associated with hydrological disturbance alone may not be sufficient for explaining, and by extension predicting, community assembly in this wetland. Other processes, perhaps involving overland dispersal, may eventually add a new dimension to, and complicate our understanding of, community processes in fluctuating wetlands.  相似文献

Floodplain lakes along the lower River Murray are subject to a wide range of human impacts including regulation, abstraction, elevated saline groundwater tables, increased nutrient and sediment fluxes and introduced biota. These perturbations are superimposed on those arising from high inter-annual rainfall variability, driven, at least in part, by variations in the southern oscillation. Sediment-based archives from two lakes within a complex of wetlands, situated near to the first site of irrigation development in the lower River Murray, reveal substantial changes over the last 800 years. While high levels of salinity are not foreign to the sites, the recent trend is towards sustained high salinity levels. As a result of European impact, freshwater diatom plankton now dominates Loch Luna, whilst Loveday Wetland is both more saline and nutrient rich than in the pre-European period. In Loveday Wetland, the post-1960 increase in Haslea spicula (Hickie) Lange-Bertalot, may be driven by increases in sulphur salt concentrations that are believed to be a cause of recent acidification episodes. A recent increase in more salt tolerant diatoms in Loch Luna suggests that this site, which has been largely buffered from substantial change, is becoming more vulnerable to perturbation. Soil characteristics of mangrove forests at Amphur Laemngob, Trat Province, east Thailand were investigated in both dry andrainy seasons. Sonneratia alba, Avicennia alba andRhizophora mucronata mainly grew as seaward mangroves.Rhizophora apiculata, Ceriops tagal, Excoecaria agallocha andBruguiera gymnorrhiza grew as meso mangroves in most cases.Lumnitzera racemosa was found as a landward mangrove. The salinity of the soil in which these 8 species grew was significantly higher in the dry season than in the rainy season. Soil pH did not change irrespective of the season. Each species seemed to grow at inherent soil pH. Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Sonneratia alba andAvicennia marina were found both in Japan and Thailand. The soil pH of each mangrove species was similar in Japan and Thailand. The soil salinity of each mangrove species in Japan was similar to that in Thailand in the dry season. It was suggested that soil pH and salinity in the dry season are the important factors governing the zonal distribution of mangroves.  相似文献

A series of eleven reservoirs was constructed in the Paranapanema River, southeast Brazil, for hydropower production. The phytoplankton structure and its relations with the environmental variables were studied in two of these reservoirs: a large upstream located storage system (high water retention time) and a small run-of-river system (short water retention time). The samples were collected quarterly for two consecutive years, at four sampling stations in each reservoir. Higher phytoplankton richness was observed in the semi-lotic compartments. Higher values of diversities were observed in the upper region of the run-of-river reservoir, under the influence of the larger storage reservoir discharges, and lower values were observed in deeper layers of this same reservoir. The pronounced variation on seasonal rain precipitation and operational water releases, retention time and quota had major influence in the phytoplankton assemblages. The influence of other environmental variables was also indicated by a canonical correlation analysis. Chlamydophyceae, Dinophyceae, Zygnemaphyceae, Chrysophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Cyanobacteria were positively correlated with higher transparency and depth; Euglenophyceae with temperature and Cryptophyceae with total phosphorus, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, turbidity, total nitrogen and total suspended solids. The influence of the storage reservoir on the phytoplankton of the downstream run-of-river reservoir was more evident in the dry period. During the rainy period the lateral tributaries effects seems to have a higher influence, especially on the smaller studied reservoir.  相似文献

Hydrological seasonality of flow dictates diversity in tropical aquatic ecosystems. Large tropical rivers and tributaries are typically more depth and shows increased flow velocity and area in flood than in dry season. A thorough analysis of seasonality effect on fish community structure can provide valuable information of major forces driving tropical communities. However, these types of analyses have been limited by poor knowledge of tropical diversity, human impacts on environment, and biased sampling methods. We used a pristine large tropical river (and tributaries) and five types (12 gill nets, beach seine nets, longlines, branch baited hooks, and cast nets) of fishing gears to present an evaluation of flow seasonality effect on fish community. We sampled fourteen sites in river channel and tributaries in the lower Araguaia River. Sampling was conducted in flood (March and May 2009) and dry (July and September 2009) seasons of a typical seasonal year. Species richness, Shannon Diversity and Evenness, mean similarity of binary data, and abundance (CPUE) were analyzed by PERMANOVA and PCoA. We also analyzed the species most correlated (by Spearman correlation rank) with flood and dry season. Features differed significantly between flood and dry seasons, but not between channel and tributaries. The composition and abundance of community, and the representative species of flood and dry changed quite along the year. Flood showed lotic-related species, and dry presented lentic-related species. Thus, we achieved an alternation of fish community between season, both for channel and tributaries.  相似文献
