Cooperative behaviors are promoted by kin selection if the costs to the actor are smaller than the fitness benefits to the recipient, weighted by the coefficient of relatedness. In primates, cooperation occurs primarily among female dyads. Due to male dispersal before sexual maturity in many primate species, however, it is unknown whether there are sufficient opportunities for selective tolerance and occasional coalitionary support for kin selection to favor male nepotistic support. We studied the effect of the presence of male kin on correlates of male reproductive success (residence time, duration of high dominance rank) in non‐natal male long‐tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis). We found that “related” (i.e., related at the half‐sibling level or higher) males in a group have a significantly higher probability to remain in the non‐natal group compared to males without relatives. Moreover, males stayed longer in a group when a relative was present at group entry or joined the same group within 3 months upon arrival. Males with co‐residing relatives also maintained a high rank for longer than those without. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a potential nepotistic effect on residence and rank maintenance among non‐natal males in a social system without long‐term alliances.  相似文献

Arsenic is an environmental pollutant, and its liver toxicity has long been recognized. The effect of arsenic on liver protein expression was analyzed using a proteomic approach in monkeys. Monkeys were orally administered sodium arsenite (SA) for 28 days. As shown by 2D‐PAGE in combination with MS, the expression levels of 16 proteins were quantitatively changed in SA‐treated monkey livers compared to control‐treated monkey livers. Specifically, the levels of two proteins, mortalin and tubulin beta chain, were increased, and 14 were decreased, including plastin‐3, cystathionine‐beta‐synthase, selenium‐binding protein 1, annexin A6, alpha‐enolase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase‐M, erlin‐2, and arginase‐1. In view of their functional roles, differential expression of these proteins may contribute to arsenic‐induced liver toxicity, including cell death and carcinogenesis. Among the 16 identified proteins, four were selected for validation by Western blot and immunohistochemistry. Additional Western blot analyses indicated arsenic‐induced dysregulation of oxidative stress related, genotoxicity‐related, and glucose metabolism related proteins in livers from SA‐treated animals. Many changes in the abundance of toxicity‐related proteins were also demonstrated in SA‐treated human hepatoma cells. These data on the arsenic‐induced regulation of proteins with critical roles may help elucidate the specific mechanisms underlying arsenic‐induced liver toxicity.  相似文献

Macaca fascicularis and Macaca mulatta are two of the most commonly used laboratory macaques, yet their genetic differences at a genome‐wide level remain unclear. We analysed the multilocus DNA sequence data of 54 autosomal loci obtained from M. fascicularis samples from three different geographic origins and M. mulatta samples of Burmese origin. M. fascicularis shows high nucleotide diversity, four to five times higher than humans, and a strong geographic population structure between Indonesian‐Malaysian and Philippine macaques. The pattern of divergence and polymorphism between M. fascicularis and M. mulatta shows a footprint of genetic exchange not only within their current hybrid zone but also across a wider range for more than 1 million years. However, genetic admixture may not be a random event in the genome. Whereas randomly selected genic and intergenic regions have the same evolutionary dynamics between the species, some cytochrome oxidase P450 (CYP) genes (major chemical metabolizing genes and potential target genes for local adaptation) have a significantly larger species divergence than other genes. By surveying CYP3A5 gene sequences of more than a hundred macaques, we identified three nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms that were highly differentiated between the macaques. The mosaic pattern of species divergence in the genomes may be a consequence of genetic differentiation under ecological adaptation and may be a salient feature in the genomes of nascent species under parapatry.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to validate low radiation dose, contrast‐enhanced, multi‐detector computed tomography (MDCT) as a non‐invasive method for measuring ovarian volume in macaques. Computed tomography scans of four known‐volume phantoms and nine mature female cynomolgus macaques were acquired using a previously described, low radiation dose scanning protocol, intravenous contrast enhancement, and a 32‐slice MDCT scanner. Immediately following MDCT, ovaries were surgically removed and the ovarian weights were measured. The ovarian volumes were determined using water displacement. A veterinary radiologist who was unaware of actual volumes measured ovarian CT volumes three times, using a laptop computer, pen display tablet, hand‐traced regions of interest, and free image analysis software. A statistician selected and performed all tests comparing the actual and CT data. Ovaries were successfully located in all MDCT scans. The iliac arteries and veins, uterus, fallopian tubes, cervix, ureters, urinary bladder, rectum, and colon were also consistently visualized. Large antral follicles were detected in six ovaries. Phantom mean CT volume was 0.702±SD 0.504 cc and the mean actual volume was 0.743±SD 0.526 cc. Ovary mean CT volume was 0.258±SD 0.159 cc and mean water displacement volume was 0.257±SD 0.145 cc. For phantoms, the mean coefficient of variation for CT volumes was 2.5%. For ovaries, the least squares mean coefficient of variation for CT volumes was 5.4%. The ovarian CT volume was significantly associated with actual ovarian volume (ICC coefficient 0.79, regression coefficient 0.5, P=0.0006) and the actual ovarian weight (ICC coefficient 0.62, regression coefficient 0.6, P=0.015). There was no association between the CT volume accuracy and mean ovarian CT density (degree of intravenous contrast enhancement), and there was no proportional or fixed bias in the CT volume measurements. Findings from this study indicate that MDCT is a valid non‐invasive technique for measuring the ovarian volume in macaques. Am. J. Primatol. 72:530–538, 2010. © 2010 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Background Captive cynomolgus macaques are prone to obesity, increasing their risk for developing hyperglycemia and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Social rank may be a contributing risk factor predisposing macaques to adverse health events. Methods Using retrospective health records from 259 animals, a matched case–control study was conducted to assess risk factors for developing hyperglycemia in group‐housed, adult females aged 10 or older. Univariable exact and conditional logistic regression models were used to analyze the data. Result The odds of developing hyperglycemia were significantly greater in animals with more frequent counts of injury. Similarly, subordinate animals had higher odds of developing hyperglycemia than affiliates. Conclusions Subordinate social status may increase the risk of hyperglycemia in mature female cynomolgus macaques. Opportunities for subordinates to alter feeding strategies are reduced in captivity. This may be associated with increased social stress around feeding, and for animals housed long‐term could predispose them to obesity and hyperglycemia.  相似文献

Crab-eating, or long-tailed, macaques [ Macaca fascicularis (Raffles, 1821)] have been studied extensively throughout their distribution in South and South-east Asia. Despite this extensive body of research, the island population of long-tailed macaques from Singapore remains virtually undescribed. In the present study, we compare the morphometric variability and patterns of growth observed in a population sample from Singapore with a composite sample from Thailand, north of the Isthmus of Kra. The results of our analyses indicate that there are statistically significant differences between the two populations in adult size and shape. For both males and females, the Singapore population is smaller than the Thai population. Relative to body length, the Singapore macaques exhibit significantly longer tails, and, relative to cranial length, they exhibit significantly more narrow faces than the Thai macaques. Although levels of sexual dimorphism for most morphometric traits are very similar, indicating similar levels of male–male competition for females, the Singapore males exhibit a significantly larger testicular volume relative to body weight, suggestive of an alternative male reproductive strategy. In addition to adult somatometric size and shape, comparisons of growth patterns relative to age and body size reveal significant differences between the two population samples. Combined, these results suggest either that statistically significant differences in adult morphology and patterns of growth can occur in presumably reproductively cohesive subspecies, or the Singapore macaques may be taxonomically distinct.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 92 , 675–694.  相似文献

Background

Long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) are an important model species in biomedical research and reliable knowledge about their evolutionary history is essential for biomedical inferences. Ten subspecies have been recognized, of which most are restricted to small islands of Southeast Asia. In contrast, the common long-tailed macaque (M. f. fascicularis) is distributed over large parts of the Southeast Asian mainland and the Sundaland region. To shed more light on the phylogeny of M. f. fascicularis, we sequenced complete mitochondrial (mtDNA) genomes of 40 individuals from all over the taxon’s range, either by classical PCR-amplification and Sanger sequencing or by DNA-capture and high-throughput sequencing.

Results

Both laboratory approaches yielded complete mtDNA genomes from M. f. fascicularis with high accuracy and/or coverage. According to our phylogenetic reconstructions, M. f. fascicularis initially diverged into two clades 1.70 million years ago (Ma), with one including haplotypes from mainland Southeast Asia, the Malay Peninsula and North Sumatra (Clade A) and the other, haplotypes from the islands of Bangka, Java, Borneo, Timor, and the Philippines (Clade B). The three geographical populations of Clade A appear as paraphyletic groups, while local populations of Clade B form monophyletic clades with the exception of a Philippine individual which is nested within the Borneo clade. Further, in Clade B the branching pattern among main clades/lineages remains largely unresolved, most likely due to their relatively rapid diversification 0.93-0.84 Ma.

Conclusions

Both laboratory methods have proven to be powerful to generate complete mtDNA genome data with similarly high accuracy, with the DNA-capture and high-throughput sequencing approach as the most promising and only practical option to obtain such data from highly degraded DNA, in time and with relatively low costs. The application of complete mtDNA genomes yields new insights into the evolutionary history of M. f. fascicularis by providing a more robust phylogeny and more reliable divergence age estimations than earlier studies.

Menstrual cycle records were kept on all of the females in the colony for a period of 14 months. The mean cycle length was 30.8 days; the median, 33 days; and, the mode, 28 days. Cycles ranging from 27 to 32 days in length comprised 66.4% of all cycles. Regular cycles were scored on the basis of menses beginning within 2 days of a projected date based on an average of 6 previous cycles. Regular cycles were observed in 6.24% of the cases. The mean cycle length for regular cycles was 29.2 days. Forty-five percent of all females had regular cycles at least 70% of the time. The duration of menstrual flow for 150 cycles averaged 2.8 days. Menses ranged from 1 to 8 days in length, with 90.7% of the cases ranging from 1 to 4 days in length. For a given duration of menses, the percentage of cases of light flow increased as the end of the menstrual period was reached. The mean gestation length of 3 pregnancies was 164.4 days, with implantation bleeding beginning on day 19 of pregnancy and lasting from 4 to 9 days. This work supported by National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Center for Population Research Contract No. 70-2061; USPHS Grant No. 5-PO6-RR 00366-04, to the Center for Laboratory Animal Resources, and, NIH Career Development Award No. 1-K4-HD35, 306-01. We developed a two‐step extraction method for measuring fecal steroid concentrations. In the first step, distilled water was used to extract steroids from fecal samples. In the second step, a mixture of organic solvents (hexane and ether) was used to re‐extract water extracts that had been transferred to a glass tube. A portion of the upper layer of the organic solvents was transferred to separate assay‐tubes for measurement of estradiol (E2) or progesterone (P), and the organic solvents were evaporated in vacuo. After phosphate‐buffered saline was added to each tube, commercially supplied radioimmunoassay (RIA) kits were used to determine the steroids. We demonstrated the advantages and reliability of this method by using it to assay the steroid hormone concentrations in fecal samples and serum samples collected on the same day from female cynomolgus monkeys who showed normal menstrual cycles and from monkeys who had induced hyperfunction of ovarian steroidgenesis. Different fecal samples from each monkey were used to determine the recovery rate of each steroid in water extraction from the fecal samples and the reproductivity of hormone concentrations in the fecal samples. The results demonstrate that this two‐step method is simple and effective for measuring fecal steroids for monitoring the reproductive status of cynomolgus monkeys, without having to collect serum samples. BACKGROUND: Stillbirths in non-human primates are a major problem and represent failure of the maternal-fetal-placental unit to maintain normal relationships because of various endogenous, undetermined or environmental factors. METHODS: Records of 236 stillborns and their dams in a Macaca fascicularis colony during a 7-year period were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: The 7-year stillbirth incidence was 11.99% (236 stillbirths, 1967 live births). Most (61.02%, n = 144) were of undetermined etiology. Fetal causes included trauma (22.46%, n = 53), fetal pneumonia (0.85%, n = 2) and congenital anomalies (0.42%, n = 1). Maternal causes included dystocia (9.75%, n = 23) and uterine rupture (0.42%, n = 1). Forty-nine placentas were available for histologic evaluation; there was placentitis in five, necrosis in five and placental abruption in two. Most stillbirths occurred close to term. First stillbirths usually occurred in 8- to 12-year-old animals during the first six pregnancies. CONCLUSIONS: Most stillbirths were of undetermined etiology. Fetal trauma was the most common cause.  相似文献
