Five captive moose calves each infested with 42,000 larval Dermacentor albipictus, six calves each infested with 19,000-21,000, and five control moose were observed for changes in hair-loss, body condition and number, stages, and distribution of the tick. Winter hair-loss was observed only in moose infested with ticks and was correlated positively with the total number of adult ticks. Hair-loss associated with ticks was minimal from October to January, but rapidly increased from February to April when up to 44% of hair had been removed. The pattern of hair-loss was similar in all moose with the neck, shoulders, withers, and perianal areas losing the most hair. Moose with extensive premature hair-loss had less pericardial and abdominal visceral fat than moose with little or no hair-loss.  相似文献

Moose, Alces alces, were infested with 21,000 or 42,000 larval Dermacentor albipictus at the end of September. Larvae grew rapidly and molted to the nymphal stage 10-22 days after infestation. The nymphal stage lasted approximately 3 mo until mid-January and was characterized by a diapause. The diapause is likely an adaptation to survival in cold climates. Nymphs started engorging in January and adults were seen with increasing abundance from mid-January to March and April. The minimum parasitic period was 175 days. Growth of larvae and nymphs was similar on moose given different numbers of larvae and was generally similar between a moose infested in November and moose infested earlier. Dimensions and stages of development throughout the parasitic phase are given. Game enforcement officers are encouraged to use these data for determination of season of death of moose.  相似文献

The larval stage of the winter tick, Dermacentor albipictus, was studied under field conditions in central Alberta, Canada. Larvae ascended vegetation in autumn, possibly in response to photoperiod. Numbers found by flagging increased from early September to early October and decreased gradually to zero by December. Larvae clumped on the tips of vegetation approximately 1-1.5 m off the ground, and did not exhibit a diurnal, vertical migration. Activity was temperature dependent and no obvious preference of vegetation species for ascension was detected. Transmission of larvae to moose was probably facilitated by synchrony of the larval activity period with the moose breeding season in autumn.  相似文献

Five hundred two trappers representing 389 registered traplines in northern Alberta, northern British Columbia, Northwest Territories and Yukon Territory (Canada) responded to a questionnaire on the occurrence of hair loss and the winter tick (Dermacentor albipictus) on moose (Alces alces). Results suggested that winter ticks may occur as far as 62 degrees N. Several sightings of moose with presumed tick-induced hair loss near Kluane Lake, Yukon Territory, suggest the possibility of introduction of this serious pest into the moose population in Alaska.  相似文献

North American moose (Alces alces) populations along the southern extent of their range have been experiencing high levels of calf mortality in recent years. In New England, this phenomenon has been linked to extensive blood loss resulting from extreme winter tick (Dermacentor albipictus) parasitism. Moose are symbolic of the region and generate income through tourism and the auction of hunting permits; thus, successive years of greater than 50% calf mortality (epizootics) are of concern to wildlife managers and others. It is hypothesized that high localized moose density coupled with climate change are the driving forces behind moose-winter tick epizootics; however, the impact that variable combinations of these and other factors have on the occurrence and magnitude of epizootics has not been previously simulated. We, therefore, developed and implemented a spatially explicit agent-based model with two model environments, each representative of a distinct location within an ongoing field study site in northern New Hampshire that differed in the proportional availability of optimal moose habitat. Three experiments were devised to test the sensitivity of the outcome variables, calf infestation level and calf mortality, to 1) winter tick abundance, 2) winter tick aggregation, and 3) moose density, for the length of the winter tick questing period. Each experiment was conducted in both model environments. This model generated similar mortality levels to those measured in the field study under representative moose density and weather conditions. Additionally, the modeled moose agents and the radio-collared moose in the field reflect comparable habitat usage. While the infestation levels reported by calf agents are considered conservative, we believe that future versions of this model, parameterized with more accurate estimates of winter tick abundance and moose density, may be an effective tool for managing moose against winter tick parasitism.  相似文献

Competition among ticks, and among ectoparasites generally, has rarely been demonstrated. Ixodes scapularis and Dermacentor albipictus are both hard ticks commonly found feeding on deer harvested at Letterkenny Army Depot, in south central Pennsylvania, USA. The two species have contrasting life histories resulting in D. albipictus spending notably more time on the shared host. We hypothesized that this would give D. albipictus an advantage in locating and occupying optimal attachment sites (highly vascularized areas like the head and ears). Ticks were collected from 224 hunter-killed deer in December 2005 and November 2006 to determine if there is evidence of competition for attachment sites when these two species concurrently infest deer. A timed sample (3?min per region) of representative ticks was collected from the head (ears, face and neck regions) and body (axillae regions). Ixodes scapularis was more abundant and prevalent overall than D. albipictus. Dermacentor albipictus was found almost exclusively on the head, whereas I. scapularis was more evenly distributed, but somewhat more abundant on the body than on the head. The proportion of I. scapularis on the head was reduced at high D. albipictus abundances, but I. scapularis abundance did not alter the distribution of D. albipictus. This study supports the hypothesis of competition for preferred attachment sites between these two species of ticks, and suggests that D. albipictus may be competitively dominant over I. scapularis on the head region of concurrently infested white-tailed deer.  相似文献

Densities of winter ticks (Dermacentor albipictus) were determined on each of 20 moose (Alces alces) half-hides by dissolving 100 cm2 quadrats in potassium hydroxide solution. Data were then used to determine the optimum sampling fraction for estimating tick densities. Random sampling was applied to 20 additional half-hides of known tick density to assess the accuracy of the estimates. We conclude that random sampling of 15% of the quadrats produces a good estimate of tick density. Total numbers of ticks were highly correlated with tick density.  相似文献

Abstract: Sodium has many fundamental physiological functions in animals but is rare in boreal ecosystems where moose (Alces alces) thrive. In Québec (Canada), sodium is readily available in aquatic vegetation and in salt pools that form along highways. We do not know if moose are adopting specific behaviors to access sodium sources or if they simply use the sodium sources they encounter during their movements. We tested the hypothesis that moose modify both space and habitat use to gather sodium from salt pools. We expected moose to use salt pools mostly in spring and early summer, when needs are greatest and before aquatic vegetation has fully developed. We fitted 47 moose with Global Positioning System telemetry collars and collected data for 2 to 36 months between 2003 and 2006. We rarely located moose at salt pools (0.12% among the 95,007 locations collected). As we expected, use of salt pools was highest in late spring and in early summer, and we observed a time lag between peak use of salt pools compared to use of lakes and waterways, indicating moose fulfilled their sodium requirements in salt pools before aquatic vegetation was available. Moose selected salt pools over lakes and waterways when these 2 sodium sources were present in their home range and moved rapidly over large distances to reach them. Our results were consistent with moose using salt pools when they are likely to be sodium deficient. Salt pools were less accessible, required long-distance movements, and were located in habitually avoided areas along highways. Elimination of roadside salt pools should be considered among strategies to reduce cervid-vehicle collision risks in boreal environments.  相似文献

Knowledge on reproductive success is vital for successful management of large ungulates and is often measured by means of observing surviving offspring. In harvested ungulates, postmortem investigations of reproductive organs are used to estimate reproductive potential by obtaining ovulation rates and fetus numbers. However, there are differences in numbers of offspring observed, fetal/embryo counts, and ovulation rates. We hypothesize that the discrepancy between estimated reproductive potential and reproductive outcome in large ungulates is not only due to ova loss but also due to embryonic mortality. We investigated reproductive status in early pregnancy by sampling hunter-harvested moose (Alces alces) in southern Sweden from 2007 to 2011. In all, 213 reproductive organs were examined postmortem, and in confirmed pregnant moose (n?=?53), 25 % (19 of 76) embryos were nonviable and 6 % of ova was unfertilized. The discrepancy between the ovulation rate of all pregnant moose (1.49) and the number of expected offspring per pregnant female, when embryonic mortality and unfertilized oocytes were accounted for (1.08), was 27.5 %. An association between inflammation of the inner mucous membrane (endometritis) of the moose's uterus and embryonic mortality was observed. This is the first comprehensive report of embryonic mortality and endometritis in moose. The observed discrepancy between ovulation rates and early embryonic development/survival shows that ovulation rates are indicative but not accurate estimates of moose reproductive rate. The use of ovulation rates as a sole estimator of future offspring rates may lead to an overharvest of a managed moose population.  相似文献

Parasites collected from free-ranging black bears, Ursus americanus, in northern Wisconsin included Dermacentor variabilis, D. albipictus, Ixodes scapularis, Demodex sp., Trichodectes pinguis euarctidos, Baylisascaris transfuga and Dirofilaria ursi. Mange, possibly caused by the Demodex sp., also was observed. Dental caries were common and periodontal disease was observed in one animal.  相似文献

We examined chase distances of gray wolves Canis lupus Linnaeus, 1758 hunting moose Alces alces and roe deer Capreolus capreolus, and recorded details of encounters between wolves and prey on the Scandinavian Peninsula, 1997–2003. In total, 252 wolf attacks on moose and 64 attacks on roe deer were registered during 4200 km of snow tracking in 28 wolf territories. Average chase distances were 76 m for moose and 237 m for roe deer, a difference likely due to variation in body size and vigilance between prey species. A model including prey species, outcome of the attack, and snow depth explained 15–19% of the variation found in chase distances, with shorter chase distances associated with greater snow depth and with successful attacks on moose but not on roe deer. Wolf hunting success did not differ between prey species (moose 43%, roe deer 47%) but in 11% of the wolf attacks on moose at least one moose was injured but not killed, whereas no injured roe deer survived. Compared with most North American wolf studies chase distances were shorter, hunting success was greater, and fewer moose made a stand when attacked by wolves in our study. Differences in wolf encounters with moose and roe deer likely result from different anti-predator behaviour and predator-prey history between prey species.  相似文献

Research on moose-mediated seed dispersal is limited. However, its potential role in transferring seeds in patchy landscapes may be of great importance. In this work we examined how seasons and vegetation diversity influence the species richness and abundance of seeds dispersed endozoochorically by moose. Samples of moose faeces were collected year-round, fortnightly, from contrasting vegetation types, dominated by diverse, species-rich wetland or poor, dry pine forest. The viable seed content of dung was studied by the seedling emergence method. The mean number of emerged seedlings per 0.8 L sample and the mean number of plant species per 0.8 L sample were several times higher in the diverse wetland vegetation than in the poor pine forest vegetation. Maximum species richness and seed abundance was observed during the fructification period, and the minimum during spring. The species richness of samples did not differ between winter and the growing season, although the composition of plant species was different. The results of this study suggest that moose are efficient seed vectors, especially of grasses typical for grasslands and wetlands. The species richness and abundance of dispersed seeds coincides with the diversity of the vegetation of the animal’s habitat.  相似文献

A state-wide survey to determine the occurrence and comparative numbers of ticks infecting white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) was conducted in North Carolina (USA). One thousand six hundred twenty nine deer were examined in 60 of 100 counties; with the exception of one county in the piedmont region, all tick-infested deer occurred in the coastal plain. Ixodes scapularis (46%) and Amblyomma americanum (53%) were the most prevalent species encountered and accounted for more than 98% of the 4,286 ticks collected. Some specimens of Dermacentor albipictus and Amblyomma maculatum also were collected.  相似文献

We observed forage and habitat selection in radio-collared moose at feeding sites in southeast Norway. Use of older forest increased from spring to autumn. Birch Betula spp. and bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus accounted for c. 75% of the diet. Occurrence of important forage plants, height of browse, and difference in phenology between plant species all appeared to play a role in moose selection of feeding sites. Shading influences moose forage by delaying plant phenology and possibly through its effect on leaf content of water and secondary compounds. On single birch trees, feeding was concentrated to the top branches at midsummer; during spring and autumn more leaves from side branches were eaten. Greater discrimination as vegetation matured was also evident from the wider variety of forage species used at midsummer. Selection of feeding sites was not related to density of important browse species. We propose that variations in light/shade conditions may play a role in moose choice of feeding sites and that moose on summer range will benefit from a heterogeneous mixture of plantations and older forest stands.  相似文献

Summary In southwestern Québec, non-harvested moose populations stabilize at a density of 0.40 animal·km-2. In an attempt to test population regulation by food resources, we investigated moose body condition near this equilibrium density (0.37) and at 2 lower densities (0.22 and 0.17). Annual population growth rates were evaluated at 4, 18, and 24% respectively. We predicted that moose in the high density area would exhibit growth retardation and poorer body condition, compared to moose in the lower density areas. Measurements of head length, cranial breadth, heart weight, and kidney weight were collected from 443 moose killed during the regular autumn harvesting seasons of 1981 and 1982. There was no indication that body condition was poorer at high moose density, and hence no evidence that foraging conditions were deteriorated. We concluded that food limitation was not sufficient to explain the differences in population growth rates. Predation by wolves and/or black bears is presented as an alternative and testable hypothesis.  相似文献

Four species of ticks were collected from 537 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), examined during the hunting seasons (November to January) of 1988-89 and 1989-90 at selected locations in Alabama (USA). Ixodes scapularis was the most common tick recovered (2,060 specimens) and infested 54% of the deer. Dermacentor albipictus was the second most frequent tick (1,253 specimens) and infested 15% of the deer. Amblyomma americanum was the third most frequent tick (315 specimens) and infested 24% of the deer; this was the only species of tick collected from deer at all sampling locations. Amblyomma maculatum was an infrequent parasite (five specimens) and infested only 1% of the deer; this tick species was only recorded during the 1989-90 season. Year-to-year and geographical differences in tick infestation parameters were noted. The data are compared with those reported for previous surveys of ticks infesting white-tailed deer in Alabama and adjacent states.  相似文献

As the first step in developing an optimal foraging model for moose (Belovsky 1978), a time-energy budget for a moose was developed. For the summer period (late May through early September) at Isle Royale National Park, Michigan, we made various behavioral observations on feeding moose and inventoried their food resources. Employing these various sets of data, we were able to determine the quantity of each food consumed by moose, the time required to acquire the foods, preferences for different food plants, and differences demonstrated by the sexes. In addition to this information, we collected data on the moose's ability to utilize each of the forage plants and the population densities of moose in different years (1972–1974) in two forest types. This enabled us to examine energy flow within each of the populations and determine in what manner energy limits the moose population.  相似文献

The border region between Austria, the Czech Republic, and Germany harbors the most south‐western occurrence of moose in continental Europe. The population originated in Poland, where moose survived, immigrated from former Soviet Union or were reintroduced after the Second World War expanded west‐ and southwards. In recent years, the distribution of the nonetheless small Central European population seems to have declined, necessitating an evaluation of its current status. In this study, existing datasets of moose observations from 1958 to 2019 collected in the three countries were combined to create a database totaling 771 records (observations and deaths). The database was then used to analyze the following: (a) changes in moose distribution, (b) the most important mortality factors, and (c) the availability of suitable habitat as determined using a maximum entropy approach. The results showed a progressive increase in the number of moose observations after 1958, with peaks in the 1990s and around 2010, followed by a relatively steep drop after 2013. Mortality within the moose population was mostly due to human interactions, including 13 deadly wildlife‐vehicle collisions, particularly on minor roads, and four animals that were either legally culled or poached. Our habitat model suggested that higher altitudes (ca. 700–1,000 m a.s.l.), especially those offering wetlands, broad‐leaved forests and natural grasslands, are the preferred habitats of moose whereas steep slopes and areas of human activity are avoided. The habitat model also revealed the availability of large core areas of suitable habitat beyond the current distribution, suggesting that habitat was not the limiting factor explaining the moose distribution in the study area. Our findings call for immediate transboundary conservation measures to sustain the moose population, such as those aimed at preventing wildlife‐vehicle collisions and illegal killings. Infrastructure planning and development activities must take into account the habitat requirements of moose.  相似文献

Despite moose (Alces americanus) likely being both an ecological and cultural keystone species in the North American boreal forest, few studies have examined niche overlap between moose and other ungulates. In response to concerns from local people about the potential for competition for habitat between moose and reintroduced bison (Bison bison), and the potential for disturbance to moose by bison and bison hunters, we investigated overlap in winter habitat selection by these species in southwestern Yukon, Canada. We used available geo-referenced data of animal locations, and associated environmental covariates, to develop resource selection probability function (RSPF) models of early-winter and late-winter habitat selection by moose and bison. In early-winter, moose selected sub-alpine shrub-dominated habitats, whereas bison extensively selected wet sedge meadows in lowland valleys. Both species used a greater variety of habitats in late-winter, with moose selecting drainages above tree line or river valleys with deciduous forest cover, while bison selected either south-facing grassy slopes or wet sedge meadows. Given observed differences in seasonal habitat selection between moose and bison, these species are predicted to overlap on only 0.5 and 6.6% of our 12,818-km2 study area during early-winter and late-winter, respectively. The lack of demonstrated winter habitat overlap between moose and reintroduced bison, coupled with low diet overlap, points to an overall low potential for competition for winter habitat between these species, or for disturbance to moose attributable to bison or bison hunters. Resource partitioning that facilitates coexistence on a shared landscape suggests that concern over the impact of reintroduced bison on resident populations of moose is likely unwarranted.  相似文献

Moose (Alces alces) are highly mobile mammals that occur across arboreal regions of North America, Europe, and Asia. Alaskan moose (Alces alces gigas) range across much of Alaska and are primary herbivore consumers, exerting a prominent influence on ecosystem structure and functioning. Increased knowledge gained from population genetics provides insights into their population dynamics, history, and dispersal of these unique large herbivores and can aid in conservation efforts. We examined the genetic diversity and population structure of moose (n = 141) with 8 polymorphic microsatellites from 6 regions spanning much of Alaska. Expected heterozygosity was moderate (H(E) = 0.483-0.612), and private alleles ranged from 0 to 6. Both F(ST) and R(ST) indicated significant population structure (P < 0.001) with F(ST) < 0.109 and R(ST) < 0.125. Results of analyses from STRUCTURE indicated 2 prominent population groups, a mix of moose from the Yakutat and Tetlin regions versus all other moose, with slight substructure observed among the second population. Estimates of dispersal differed between analytical approaches, indicating a high level of historical or current gene flow. Mantel tests indicated that isolation-by-distance partially explained observed structure among moose populations (R(2) = 0.45, P < 0.01). Finally, there was no evidence of bottlenecks either at the population level or overall. We conclude that weak population structure occurs among moose in Alaska with population expansion from interior Alaska westward toward the coast.  相似文献
