Four experiments were conducted to examine the feasibility of marking pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders) with rabbit immunoglobulin G (IgG) protein for mark-release-recapture studies. Pink bollworm were internally marked by feeding larvae an enriched rabbit IgG diet or externally marked by submerging pupae and spraying adults. Individuals were then assayed for the presence of rabbit IgG by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using anti-rabbit IgG. The internal marker was retained in larvae and retained in prepupae and pupae, but not in adults. A second experiment showed that rabbit IgG was retained on adults that were externally marked as pupae. A third series of tests examined the feasibility of externally marking adults with rabbit IgG. Rabbit IgG was retained on externally marked adults for six days in the field. Protein was retained on marked moths in the laboratory after they were captured on and removed from sticky traps. Finally, laboratory tests showed that large groups of externally marked moths transferred rabbit IgG to unmarked moths, but individual males do not readily transfer the protein to unmarked females in small vials.  相似文献

The effect of a thrips‐non‐transmissible Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) on insect–host interactions between thrips and Arabidopsis thaliana was analysed. A wild‐type TSWV virulent isolate and a TSWV isolate that induces mild symptoms on inoculated plants (TSWV‐Mo) were used in this study, and TSWV‐Mo isolate was obtained by single local lesion isolation using Petunia x hybrid after several passages on Nicotiana rustica plants. In transmission test, although wild‐type TSWV (TSWV‐wt) was transmitted by two thrips species (transmission ratio; Frankliniella occidentalis, 25%; Thrips tabaci, 10%; and T. palmi, 0%), none of the thrips transmitted TSWV‐Mo. Feeding damage by F. occidentalis in A. thaliana plants was more extensive on TSWV‐wt‐infected plants than on TSWV‐Mo‐infected plants, despite comparable preference. Among the markers of plant defences, salicylic acid‐regulated genes were upregulated threefold to sixfold by TSWV‐wt or TSWV‐Mo infection. In contrast, jasmonate‐regulated genes and jasmonate/ethylene‐regulated genes were not affected by the infections. Pull assays showed that adjacent TSWV‐Mo‐infected plants were preferred over uninfected plants. In conclusion, our results showed that the transmissibility by thrips of TSWV is not related to preference of vector thrips and suggested that TSWV‐Mo‐infected plants may be used as attractants for behaviour control of thrips.  相似文献

The development time, fecundity, longevity, and resultant intrinsic growth rate of the western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) [Thysanoptera: Thripidae] encaged on a cucumber leaf were compared among seven types of food supplied: six pollen species and a mixture of milk powder and yeast. The rationale was to find a food source that offers the least benefit for thrips and could therefore be considered as a food source for the preventative introduction of thrips predators. With the exception of the mixture of milk powder and yeast, all the food sources tested offered a nutritional benefit for the thrips. The addition of pollen increased fecundity and reduced development time, mainly during the larval stage. Betula pubescens and Corylus avellana pollen also increased adult longevity. The nutritional benefit of Pinus sylvestris pollen was greater than that of the other five pollen species, as manifested by its significantly greater positive effect on fecundity. The other pollen species could not be ranked in terms of nutritional benefit to F. occidentalis. The negative effect of the milk powder plus yeast mix on the life‐table parameters of F. occidentalis probably only occurs in an encaged situation where thrips cannot escape from the unfavorable environment. The crude estimate of the intrinsic growth rate of F. occidentalis increased from 0.163 on the plain cucumber leaf to 0.240 when P. sylvestris pollen was added to the leaf. The differences in intrinsic growth rate mainly reflect the differences in fecundity among the food sources. Thus, the peak oviposition rate may be used as a measure of the nutritional benefit F. occidentalis can obtain by feeding on supplemental food sources. The positive effect of a supplemental food source on thrips does not necessarily mean it is unsuitable for the preventative introduction of thrips predators, because the supplemental food can also affect the population dynamics of the predator and the predator–prey interaction and, hence, the outcome of biological control.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the depth of penetration into the soil by Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) and Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysan., Thripidae) in cucumber and tomato crops in greenhouses. A metal sampling apparatus sampled for the two species of thrips at five levels of soil depth (0–10 cm), over seven dates of sampling, each in eight replications. In general, thrips were found to be in greater numbers in the first 2 cm of soil, with the number of insects decreasing with depth increasing. In the depth of 8–10 cm, no insects were found. Number of thrips found in the soil under cucumber plants was greater in comparison with the tomato samplings. Frankliniella occidentalis was found in greater numbers in comparison with T. tabaci. The date of sampling showed a significant interaction with soil depth, with the number of insects found increasing from the first to the last date of sampling.  相似文献

We examined the effects of fertilization on population abundance and within‐plant distribution of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), on potted chrysanthemum, Dendranthema grandiflora (Tzvelev). We also investigated the effects of fertilization on the number of insecticide applications needed to control F. occidentalis on potted chrysanthemum. Under greenhouse conditions, rate of change in population abundance of F. occidentalis increased with fertilization levels from 0 to 100% of the standard fertilization level (375 ppm N) and was four times higher on plants fertilized with the standard level (rate of change = 0.14) than on plants fertilized with 0% during the first 4 weeks after thrips inoculation. Within‐plant distribution of F. occidentalis was influenced by the phenology of the plants rather than total nitrogen content of plant tissues. Prior to flower opening, more F. occidentalis were found in the middle region of the plants. When the flowers began to open, more thrips were found feeding inside the flowers than on the leaves. We further showed that production time, the time from transplantation to flower opening, shortened considerably with increased fertilization level. Production time was shortest, 12 weeks, for plants fertilized with 100% of the standard fertilization level. When the fertilization level was reduced to 20%, production time lengthened to 13 weeks. When fertilization level was reduced to 0%, production time lengthened to 14 weeks. Increased fertilization from 0 to 100% of the standard level did not result in higher numbers of insecticide applications. All three insecticides (acephate, bifenthrin, and spinosad) were effective in keeping the thrips infestation below a predetermined level, five thrips per plant, but bifenthrin required the most number of applications to do so. For chrysanthemum, a fast‐growing crop and heavy utilizer of fertilizer, fertilization influenced not only the population growth of pest insects but also plant production time. As a result, optimizing fertilization level to reduce pest population growth may be a useful tactic in an Integrated Pest Management program for managing F. occidentalis on potted chrysanthemum. However, the effect of fertilization on production time and plant quality should also be considered when implementing this tactic.  相似文献

Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, and onion thrips, Thrips tabaci, are both important polyphagous pests of vegetables and ornamentals in greenhouses. Difficulties in biological control of these pests have prompted a search for new natural enemies. Most recently, the predatory mite Amblyseius swirskii has been commercialised as biological control agent of whiteflies and thrips. However, little is known about the suitability of thrips as prey for A. swirskii. We therefore assessed prey acceptance and life history of A. swirskii when feeding on F. occidentalis and T. tabaci at 25±1°C. Amblyseius swirskii juveniles preyed upon first larval instars of both F. occidentalis and T. tabaci but suffered from high mortality (67 and 78%). Developmental time (egg to adult) of A. swirskii was 7.8 days with either prey species. Adult A. swirskii females readily accepted first larval instars of both thrips species, which were attacked in <20 min on a leaf and <10 min in an artificial cage. Oviposition rates (0.92 and 0.99 eggs/female/day) and offspring sex ratios (63 and 70% females) were similar with F. occidentalis and T. tabaci as prey. Less than one-third of juveniles reaching adulthood and oviposition rates below one egg/female per day resulted in relatively low intrinsic rates of increase (r m) (0.056 and 0.024 per day with F. occidentalis and T. tabaci, respectively). Altogether, our study suggests that the recently reported superiority of A. swirskii to the widely used Neoseiulus cucumeris in suppression of thrips is due to other traits than its population growth capacity with thrips as prey.  相似文献

The objectives of this work were to estimate the capability of local populations of thrips as vectors of groundnut ringspot virus (GRSV) and tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), and to determine the species composition of vectors in tomato crops. Transmission assays were performed. Incidence of tospoviruses was estimated in commercial crops. Random samples of flowers were taken from tomato for identification of thrips. Of the five species of thrips tested, Frankliniella gemina (first record), F. occidentalis and F. schultzei transmitted GRSV and TSWV. F. schultzei was a significantly more efficient vector of GRSV than F. occidentalis under controlled assay conditions. The thrips were identified on flowers from six surveyed tomato crops. F. occidentalis was the most frequently identified species (43.0%), followed by F. schultzei (35.6%) and Thrips tabaci (10.1%). The incidence of tospoviruses was low (1.1–2.8%) in crops planted during August–September and greater (9.5–61.1%) in crops planted in December. GRSV was prevalent (85%) over TSWV (11%).  相似文献

Two field experiments examined the distance over which an attractant odour of a volatile chemical could influence thrips capture in proximal traps that were without the odour. In each experiment a star‐shaped array of water traps consisted of a centre trap with or without an odour surrounded by odourless traps at 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 10 m in eight equally spaced radial arms 45° apart. Experiments ran for 47 h (centre trap: ethyl nicotinate) or 7 h (centre trap: ethyl isonicotinate). Each had four replicates. With ethyl nicotinate, more thrips were trapped in the centre‐baited traps than in the unbaited centre traps (63×, 7×, 98× and 200× for total thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindeman ♀, and Thrips obscuratus Crawford ♀and ♂, respectively) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). More total thrips and T. tabaci♀ were trapped in the centre traps baited with ethyl isonicotinate than in unbaited centre traps (21× for both). For ethyl nicotinate, numbers of T. obscuratus in unbaited traps downwind from the baited centre trap declined by 50% within 0.4 m (♀) and 2 m (♂) and by 95% within 3 m (both ♀ and ♂) based on model predictions. For ethyl isonicotinate, numbers of T. tabaci in unbaited traps downwind from the baited centre trap declined by 50% within 1.3 m and by 95% within 10 m based on model predictions. Wind direction was an important factor in the degree and direction of thrips capture with the highest thrips capture downwind from the centre trap with odour. There was no increase in numbers of T. tabaci in any traps without odour in the ethyl nicotinate‐centred array. Differences in trapping patterns between thrips species and odours indicated that there were thrips species–odour specific interactions. Experiments examining differences between traps with and without a thrips attractant odour need to be designed very carefully to ensure meaningful results especially in enclosed and/or low‐wind indoor situations.  相似文献

The potential of several entomopathogenic fungi to control soil‐dwelling stages of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), was evaluated in various growing media. Two Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch) Sorokin strains, V275 and ERL700, were the most effective, causing 85–96% mortality of thrips larvae and pupae (as measured by relative adult emergence rates), 11 days after inoculation. Mortality in other M. anisopliae‐treated media ranged from 51–84%; Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin strains caused 54–84% mortality, and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus (Wize) 63–75% mortality. In contrast, mortality from the insecticide treatment (fipronil 1 g l?1 medium) was only 15–54%. Metarhizium anisopliae V275 was selected for more in‐depth evaluation under greenhouse conditions. There was no significant difference in M. anisopliae efficacy in growing media whether it was applied as drench (84–93%) or premixed into the medium as dry conidia (85–92%). The use of M. anisopliae with reduced rates of either fipronil or imidacloprid did not significantly improve control. Overall, our study shows that M. anisopliae V275 is robust and offers much promise for the control of soil‐dwelling stages of thrips as part of an integrated pest‐management programme.  相似文献

Mark-capture dispersal studies were conducted to investigate the feasibility of marking the southwestern desert subterranean termite, Heterotermes aureus (Snyder) with rabbit immunoglobulin G (IgG). In turn, short-range dispersal patterns of H. aureus were measured across a 20-m diameter desert landscape at three distinct field locations. Each location consisted of 51 termite feeding stations containing corrugated cardboard. The central feeding station (CFS) at each location was impregnated with rabbit IgG. A circular grid was then constructed around each CFS that consisted of 50 additional unmarked cardboard feeding stations strategically placed around the CFS at distances of 1.5, 2.0, 4.0, 7.0 or 10.0 m. Termites self-marked with rabbit IgG by feeding on the marked bait. The CFS and the 50 peripheral feeding stations were sampled for marked termites twice at each location 17–65 days after the marked bait was placed at the CFS to determine the spatial dispersal patterns of H. aureus within each research grid. Termites that self marked by feeding on rabbit IgG marked bait were detected by an anti-rabbit IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Generally, the CFSs contained the highest frequency of marked termites with 28.0% of the individuals assayed from the CFSs containing rabbit IgG. Over the course of the study, 39 of the unmarked peripheral feeding stations contained at least one marked termite. Of the termites assayed from the peripheral stations (n = 2,955), 124 or 4.2% of the individuals contained the mark. The average distance traveled by the marked termites collected at the peripheral feeding stations was 5.7 ± 3.3 m from the CFSs. We also examined single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from termites collected at each field site. Data indicated that each field site were genetically distinct and therefore non-related termites. We discuss the advantages and limitations of marking termites with rabbit IgG for dispersal studies.  相似文献

‘Lure-and-infect’ is an insect pest management strategy with high potential but so far there are few examples of its application. Using traps as surrogates for auto-dissemination devices, we tested the attractiveness to naturally occurring thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) of three trap types differing in colour and structure, with and without the thrips lure methyl isonicotinate (MI), and sticky plate traps as a control. The aim was to find more effective traps that could be further developed into devices for auto-dissemination and lure-and-infect of thrips. The number of thrips captured varied substantially with trap type and the presence of the MI lure. We found a high visual response to a sticky ‘white ruffle’ trap (i.e., a 30-cm-long cylindrical outline of folded fabric), compared to a commonly used blue sticky plate trap (Bug-scan) as the control. This effect was seen both in a greenhouse with roses (Rosa spp.), where we encountered western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), and in a grass field, where we encountered onion thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindeman, and New Zealand flower thrips, Thrips obscuratus (Crawford). In the absence of MI, the white ruffle trap caught 7–22× more thrips than the control Bug-scan trap. A similarly designed blue ruffle trap and a modified Lynfield trap caught lower thrips numbers than the white ruffle and the control Bug-scan traps. Presence of MI substantially increased the captures of T. tabaci in all three trap types in the field (2.5–18×). In the greenhouse, without MI the white ruffle trap caught 3.5–14× more thrips than the Bug-scan, blue ruffle, or modified Lynfield traps. Presence of MI increased the captures of F. occidentalis males and females in the Lynfield and blue ruffle traps (1.4–2.8×), but not in the white ruffle trap in the greenhouse (ca. 1.1×). The importance of visual and olfactory factors for the design of effective auto-dissemination and lure-and-infect strategies for thrips management is discussed.  相似文献

Stratiolaelaos scimitus Berlese (Acari: Laelapidae) is an important soil-dwelling predatory mite used to control thrips and it is necessary to explore its potential predation capacity. In the present study, the functional response for S. scimitus on the pupae of Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande was examined. In addition, the effects of released S. scimitus for the control of Thrips tabaci Lindeman and F. occidentalis on greenhouse cucumber were evaluated, and compared with that of the common predator Neoseiulus barkeri Hughes (Acari: Phytoseiidae). The results showed that S. scimitus exhibited a Holling type II functional response on thrips pupae. The greenhouse study indicated that the release of N. barkeri and S. scimitus separately at the density of 250 mites/m2 suppressed the population growth of thrips. In comparison with control plots, N. barkeri and S. scimitus reduced the population of T. tabaci by 76% and 64% in six weeks, respectively. Releases of N. barkeri and S. scimitus led to a reduction in F. occidentalis by 41% and 43%, respectively. Significantly lower densities of both thrips species per leaf were recorded in treatments of individual releases of N. barkeri or S. scimitus than that in the control plots. The findings highlight the potential for utilising N. barkeri and S. scimitus as biological control agents of T. tabaci and F. occidentalis, respectively.  相似文献

Bemisia tabaci Genn. (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) and Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) are major pests in greenhouse grown cucumber crops. Recently, Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot (Acari: Phytoseiidae) was shown an effective biological control agent of both pests. Hence, perhaps both pests can be controlled simultaneously by this predator. However, with simultaneous infestation of both pests, synergistic effects, or interference could affect biological control and perhaps require changes in release rates of the predator. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate different release rates of A. swirskii to control both pests under a worst case scenario of rapid immigration into a cucumber greenhouse. Two experiments were conducted, one simulating the influx of whiteflies alone (whitefly experiment) and the other immigration of whiteflies and thrips together (whitefly plus thrips experiment). Three treatments were compared in the whitefly experiment: (1) B. tabaci alone, (2) B. tabaci + 25 A. swirskii m−2 and (3) B. tabaci + 75 A. swirskii m−2. The high release rate was more effective than the low rate in controlling B. tabaci alone. The high rate was subsequently tested against B. tabaci and F. occidentalis for the whitefly and thrips experiment in which five treatments were compared: (1) B. tabaci alone, (2) F. occidentalis alone, (3) B. tabaci + 75 A. swirskii m−2, (4) F. occidentalis + 75 A. swirskii m−2 and (5) B. tabaci + F. occidentalis + 75 A. swirskii m−2. This rate of A. swirskii controlled whiteflies and thrips either alone or together. Therefore, 75 A. swirskii m−2 should be an adequate rate for controlling both pests either alone or simultaneously in cucumber greenhouses.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Individual markers are essential for measuring survival rates, but few reliable techniques exist for marking young waterfowl. We banded 572‐d‐old Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) ducklings from 85 broods with plasticine‐filled leg bands in 2006–2007 and marked 82 hatchling Mallards from 43 broods with 1.8‐g back‐mounted prong‐and‐suture transmitters in 2006. We compared survival probabilities of marked ducklings and 621 unmarked ducklings from 110 broods where only the female was radio‐marked using the nest survival module in Program MARK. The best‐supported model recognized deleterious effects of both radiotransmitters (β=?0.82, 85% CI =?1.32 to ?0.33) and plasticine bands (β=?0.29, 85% CI =?0.55 to ?0.03). Cumulative survival to 30 d of age for unmarked ducklings averaged 0.22 (process variation; σ= 0.11) in 2006 and 0.20 (σ= 0.11) in 2007, whereas 30‐d survival of banded ducklings during these 2 yr was 0.14 (σ= 0.09) and 0.13 (σ= 0.09), respectively. Radio‐marked ducklings averaged 0.04 (σ= 0.03) cumulative survival in 2006. Although capturing ducklings after they leave nests is not always possible, post hoc analysis showed that marker effects decreased with duckling age and waiting until ducklings were at least 4 d old before marking would have negated these effects. Because marking hatchling Mallards with either radiotransmitters or plasticine bands negatively impacted their survival, we do not recommend these marking techniques for newly hatched ducklings.  相似文献

This study investigates behavioural responses of adult western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande; Thysan., Thripidae) females to direct contact with repellent phenylpropanoid plant compounds (salicylaldehyde and methyl salicylate) applied on bean and cucumber leaves. The residence time of F. occidentalis females until take off was significantly shorter on bean or cucumber leaf discs treated with salicylaldehyde at 1% concentration compared with control leaf discs. A methyl salicylate (1%) treatment of cucumber resulted in shorter time periods until thrips took off the treated leaf discs compared with the control leaf discs. In a choice experiment thrips avoided to settle on a 1% salicylaldehyde treatment of bean and cucumber leaf discs for a maximum of 3 h, on a 1% methyl salicylate treatment for a 5‐h period. Within a 24‐h period neither the egg‐laying nor the feeding activity of F. occidentalis was affected after salicylaldehyde application (0.1%, 1%) on bean or cucumber. In contrast, methyl salicylate (1%) applied on bean and cucumber significantly prevented thrips females from oviposition and reduced the percentage of damaged area caused by their feeding activity for 24 h. As olfactory repellent plant volatiles applied on crop plants may elicit diverse post‐landing responses of F. occidentalis, short‐ and long‐term effects should be considered when evaluating the factual applicability of secondary plant compounds in a successful thrips management strategy.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Most parakeets, parrots, and cockatoos are difficult to mark because of their strong beaks and ability to manipulate items with their feet. We developed a marking method that consists of a numbered tag hung on a neck collar. We used this method to successfully monitor Monk Parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus) and Ring‐necked Parakeets (Psittacula krameri) in Barcelona, Spain, from 2003 to 2009. We marked 881 Monk Parakeets and 88 Ring‐necked Parakeets with collars. Fifteen tags placed on adult Monk Parakeets in 2003 (N= 57) lasted until 2008 and nine until 2009. Three of 12 Ring‐necked Parakeets marked in 2003 were resighted in 2008. We estimated that 4.5% of Monk Parakeets and 5.8% of Ring‐necked Parakeets lost their tags, with median intervals between attachment and tag loss of 347 and 370 d, respectively. Behavioral observations revealed no differences in the time budgets of marked and unmarked Monk Parakeets. In addition, the mass of marked Monk Parakeets did not change between successive recaptures. These results suggest that neck collars had no adverse effects on the birds. Neck collars may also be a suitable marking method for other psittacines, with stronger, more durable components likely needed for larger species.  相似文献

Reproduction, studied by oviposition and larval survival, was negatively affected by the thrips‐resistant (TR) phenotype, whereas the offspring's developmental rate did not differ on TR and the thrips‐susceptible (TS) phenotype. While thrips’ behaviour was hardly affected by thrips resistance, a significant preference for TS plants over the TR plants was found in different tests. When released on either a TR or a TS plant, thrips dispersed at significantly higher rates from the TR plants, demonstrating that not only an impeded reproduction, but also a reduced residence time adds to the reported lower thrips numbers on TR plants.  相似文献

Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is a major pest of leek, Allium porrum L. (Alliaceae), in Piedmont, northwest Italy, and to control its infestation the leek crop is sprayed intensively with insecticides during the summer period. In order to find the most efficient and environment‐friendly method of thrips control, research was conducted on six commercial farms during 2005–2006 to assess thrips population composition and infestation levels, and in an experimental field during 2005–2007. Biological and chemical control were compared during 2005–2006, whereas integrated pest management was adopted during 2007. During the growing season, thrips and natural enemy populations were monitored at 14‐day intervals by beating plants; new leaves of plants were also visually inspected for thrips‐feeding symptoms. Furthermore, in the experimental field at harvest‐time, the level of thrips injury to plants was assigned to one of five classes, depending on the percentage of leaf area damaged. Over 99% of phytophagous adult thrips found were male and female T. tabaci. Infestations were very variable in the crops surveyed, partly due to broad‐spectrum chemical treatments against the leek pests, which often failed to control thrips. In general, populations peaked in September, when they reached the maximum mean values ranging between 1.7 and 33.1 thrips per plant. At harvest, none of the surveyed farms experienced quality losses due to thrips injuries. In the experimental field during 2005–2006, the mean number of thrips per plant was greater in the chemical than in the biological control treatment, even though damage indices showed no significant differences between the two treatments. Predatory thrips of the genus Aeolothrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) and predatory bugs of the genus Orius (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae), mostly Orius majusculus Reuter, were particularly abundant during 2007, supporting the importance of management with selective insecticides to encourage natural colonization by predators.  相似文献

The life cycle of the Western Flower Thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), one of the most important glasshouse pests, includes a soil passage composed of three instars that deserve more attention in terms of biocontrol strategies. It has been repeatedly reported that two polyphagous predatory mites, Stratiolaelaps miles (Berlese) and Hypoaspis (Geolaelaps) aculeifer (Canestrini) (Acari: Laelapidae), also prey on these thrips stages, in addition to several other soil inhabiting prey species. However, the potential thrips consumption rates have never been quantified for these predatory mites. Therefore, an arena experiment was carried out to investigate the potential predation rates of the two mites on second instar larvae, prepupae, and pupae of F. occidentalis. In addition, the fecundity on the thrips diet was assessed and compared to oviposition rate on a nematode prey. All thrips instars were accepted as prey by each mite species. Females of H. aculeifer preyed on 3.5 (± 0.5) thrips instars and laid 2.5 (± 0.87) eggs per day, whereas females of S. miles preyed on 1.64 (± 0.3) thrips and laid 0.8 (± 0.53) eggs. Males of both species killed 0.6 (± 0.3) thrips per day. The fitness of the two predatory mites on F. occidentalis as prey and their suitability as biocontrol agents are elucidated. Reasons for reduced thrips control in the soil environment, in contrast to the results obtained in arena assays are discussed.  相似文献

Various types of protein‐spray solutions have proven effective for externally tagging arthropods for mark‐release‐recapture and mark‐capture type dispersal research. However, there is concern that certain standardized arthropod collection methods, such as sweep netting, might lead to high incidences of protein transfer from field‐marked to unmarked arthropods during sample collection and sample handling. Native arthropods were collected in sweep nets from a field of alfalfa, Medicago sativa L. (Fabaceae). The nets also contained 10 egg white‐, 10 bovine milk‐, 10 soy milk‐, and 10 water (control)‐marked Hippodamia convergens Guérin‐Méneville (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) that were visually distinguishable by a yellow, white, green, and blue dot, respectively. The plant debris and arthropods from each sweep net collection were then placed into either a paper or a plastic bag and frozen for storage. The contents of each sweep net sample were thawed and the color‐coded H. convergens and field‐collected arthropods were examined for the presence of each protein by an egg white (albumin), bovine milk (casein), and soy milk (soy trypsin) enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Data revealed that only 0.67, 0.81, and 0% of the field‐collected unmarked arthropods acquired an egg white, bovine milk, and soy milk mark, respectively. ELISA results also showed that all the egg white‐marked H. convergens retained their mark, but 22.1% of the bovine milk‐marked and 5.1% of the soy milk‐marked H. convergens (color‐coded beetles) lost their mark during the collection and sample handling processes.  相似文献
