Potentially poplars and willows may be used for the in situ decontamination of soils polluted with Cd, such as pasturelands fertilised with Cd-rich superphosphate fertiliser. Poplar (Kawa and Argyle) and willow (Tangoio) clones were grown in soils containing a range (0.6–60.6 μg g−1 dry soil) of Cd concentrations. The willow clone accumulated significantly more Cd (9–167 μg g−1 dry matter) than the two poplar clones (6–75 μg g−1), which themselves were not significantly different. Poplar trees (Beaupré) sampled in situ from a contaminated site near the town of Auby, Northern France, were also found to accumulate significant quantities (up to 209 μg g−1) of Cd. The addition of chelating agents (0.5 and 2 g kg−1 EDTA, 0.5 g kg−1 DTPA and 0.5 g kg−1NTA) to poplar (Kawa) clones caused a temporary increase in uptake of Cd. However, two of the chelating agents (2 g kg−1 EDTA and 0.5 g kg−1 NTA) also resulted in a significant reduction in growth, as well as abscission of leaves. If the results obtained in these pot experiments can be realised in the field, then a single crop of willows could remove over 100 years worth of fertiliser-induced Cd contamination from pasturelands. Natural Occurrence of Mycotoxins in Staple Cereals from Ethiopia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The occurrence of mycotoxins in barley, sorghum, teff (Eragrostis tef) and wheat from Ethiopia has been studied. Samples were analyzed for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), ochratoxin A (OTA), deoxynivalenol (DON), nivalenol (NIV) and zearalenone (ZEN) using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and for fumonisins (FUM) using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). AFB1 and OTA were detected in samples of all the four crops. AFB1 was detected in 8.8% of the 352 samples analyzed at concentrations ranging from trace to 26 μg kg−1. OTA occurred in 24.3% of 321 samples at a mean concentration of 54.1 μg kg−1 and a maximum of 2106 μg kg−1. DON occurred in barley, sorghum and wheat at 40–2340 μg kg−1 with an overall incidence of 48.8% among the 84 mainly ‘suspect’ samples analyzed; NIV was co-analyzed with DON and was detected at 40 μg kg−1 in a wheat sample and at 50, 380, and 490 μg kg−1 in three sorghum samples. FUM and ZEN occurred only in sorghum samples with low frequencies at concentrations reaching 2117 and 32 μg kg−1, respectively. The analytical results indicate higher mycotoxin contamination in sorghum, which could be related to the widespread storage of sorghum grain in underground pits leading to elevated seed moisture contents. This is the first report on the occurrence of OTA in teff.  相似文献

Pearl millet is widely consumed in regions of Africa and Asia, and is increasingly being grown as an alternative grain in drought-prone regions of the United States. Pearl millet and corn were grown in dryland conditions at Tifton, Georgia, USA and grains were compared for pre-harvest infection by potentially toxigenic fungi and contamination by mycotoxins. Corn hybrids Agripro 9909 and Pioneer 3146, and pearl millet Tifgrain 102 were grown in 2000 and 2001; pearl millet HGM 100 was included in the test in 2001. Hybrids were sown on multiple planting dates in each year to induce variation in flowering time. Host species differed in the frequency of isolation of potentially toxigenic fungal species in both years. Across years, corn hybrids were more prone to infection by Aspergillus flavus Link (maximum isolation frequency = 8.8%) and Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon sensu lato (maximum isolation frequency = 72.8%), with corresponding greater concentrations of aflatoxins (maximum concentration = 204.9 μg kg−1) and fumonisins (maximum concentration = 34,039 μg kg−1). Pearl millet was more prone to infection by F. semitectum Berk. & Ravenel (maximum isolation = 74.2%) and F. chlamydosporum Wollenweb & Reinking (maximum isolation = 33.0%), and contamination by moniliformin (maximum contamination = 92.1 μg kg−1). Beauvericin (maximum concentration = 414.6 μg kg−1) was present in both hosts. Planting date of corn affected aflatoxin and beauvericin contamination in 2000, and fumonisin concentration in 2001. The observed differences in mycotoxin contamination of the grains, which are likely due to host-specific differences in susceptibility to pre-harvest mycoflora, may affect food safety when the crops are grown under stress conditions.  相似文献

Cl-36 is an important component of nuclear waste. The concentrations of stable chlorine (Cl) in pig and cow tissues were measured to provide information which can be used to parameterize models of 36Cl transfer into agricultural animals. The concentration of stable Cl in cows’ milk was 1.0 ± 0.2 g L−1, in cow muscle it was 0.7 ± 0.2 g kg−1 wet mass (wm) and in pig muscle 0.4 ± 0.1 g kg−1 wm. The concentration of stable Cl in cow and pig liver was 0.9 ± 0.3 g kg−1 wm, which was about two-fold higher than that in the kidney and lung. Due to homeostatic control, stable Cl concentrations in animal tissues are not related to the amount ingested daily in herbage at intake rates in the normal physiological range of up to 188 g day−1 for cows and up to 40 g day−1 for pigs. Therefore, the commonly used transfer coefficient is not suitable for use in quantifying the transfer of 36Cl to milk and meat. Since the metabolism of stable Cl and 36Cl in an animal’s body is identical, the average equilibrium ratios of 36Cl to stable Cl in the daily ration (36Cl (g kg−1)/Cl (g kg−1)) and animal tissues will be the same. We therefore conclude that the average equilibrium Cl isotopic ratio in the dietary daily intake should be used to predict the contamination of meat and milk with 36Cl.  相似文献

Cell suspension cultures of Commiphora wightii, grown in modified MS medium containing 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (0.5 mg l−1) and kinetin (0.25 mg l−1), produced ∼5 μg guggulsterone g−1 dry wt. Growth of Ruta graveolens shoots was induced when Bacillus sp. cell lysates were added to the culture medium. Elicitation of coumarin by this lysate was also very effective; the concentrations of isopimpinelin, xanthotoxin and bergapten increased to 610, 2120 and 1460 μg g−1 dry wt, respectively. It also had a significant effect on the production of psoralen and rutamarin (680 and 380 μg g−1 dry wt) and induced the biosynthesis of chalepin, which was not detected in the control sample, up to 47 μg g−1 dry wt With lysates of the Pectobacterium atrosepticum, their effect on growth was not so significant and had no effect on the induction of coumarin accumulation. But elicitation with this lysate was much more effective for inducing the production of furoquinolone alkaloids; the concentrations of γ-fagarine, skimmianine, dictamnine and kokusaginine rose to 99, 680, 172 and 480 μg g−1 dry wt, respectively.  相似文献

Artemisinin production by hairy roots of Artemisia annua L. was increased 6-fold to 1.8 μg mg−1 dry wt over 6 days by adding 150 mg chitosan l−1. The increase was dose-dependent. Similar treatment of hairy roots with methyl jasmonate (0.2 mM) or yeast extract (2 mg ml−1) increased artemisinin production to 1.5 and 0.9 μg mg−1 dry wt, respectively.  相似文献

Summary Chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L., cv. Tampique?o 74) cell suspensions were employed to study the influence of phenylalanine and phenylpropanoids on the total production of capsaicinoids, the hot taste compounds of chili pepper fruits. The effect of capsaicinoid precursors and intermediates on the accumulation of lignin as an indicator of metabolic diversion was also investigated. Addition of 100 μM of either phenylalanine, cinnamic or caffeic acids to chili pepper cell cultures did not cause significant increases in total capsaicinoids (expressed as capsaicin content, and calculated as averages of the measured values) during the growth cycle. The highest total capsaicinoid content was recorded in cultures grown in the presence of vanillin (142.61 μg g−1 f.wt.), followed by cells treated with 100 μM vanillylamine (104.88 μg g−1 f.wt.), p-coumaric acid (72.36 μg g−1 f.wt.). and ferulic acid (34.67 μg g−1 f.wt.). Capsaicinoid content for control cells was 13.97 μg g−1 f.wt. Chili pepper cell suspensions cultured in the presence of 100 μM of either phenylalanine, or cinnamic, caffeic, or ferulic acids, or the same concentration, of vanillin and vanillylamine, did not exhibit statistically significant differences in the content of lignin as compared with control cells. However, addition of p-coumaric acid (100 μM) to the cultute medium significantly increased thelignin production (c. 10–15 times the contents of control cells).  相似文献

The dechlorinating and genotoxicity-removing activities of nitrifying fluidized-bed reactor biomass towards chlorinated organic compounds in water were shown at level below 1 ppm. The removal rates of adsorbable organic halogens were 200 μg Cl (g VS day)−1 for chlorinated humic ground water and 50 μyg Cl (g VS day)−1 for chlorinated lake water when studied in batch mode. In a sequenced batch mode the removal rates μg Cl (g VS day)−1] were 2000 from chlorohumus, 1400–1800 from chlorophenols in chlorinated ground water, and 430–720 from chlorohumus in chlorinated lake water. Genotoxicity was removed to a large extent (60%–80%) from the chlorinated waters upon incubation with nitrifying reactor biomass. 2,6-Di-, 2,4,6-tri and 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenols competed with chlorinated water organohalogens for dechlorination. The dechlorination of chlorophenols and chlorohumus required no ammonia and was not prevented by inhibitors of ammonia oxidation, nitrapyrin, parathion, sodium diethyldithiocarbamate, or allylthiourea. Electron microscopical inspection of the biomass showed the dominance of clusters of bacteria resembling known nitrifying species, Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter, and Nitrosospira. This was supported by polymerase chain reaction amplification of the biomass DNA with four different primers, revealing the presence of 16S rDNA sequences assignable to the same species. The most intensive band obtained with the Nitroso4E primer was shown to be closely related to Nitrosomonas europaea by restriction analysis. The aim of the investigations was the determination of the Cu contents in the liver, kidneys and skeletal muscles of canine females. Material for research was collected post mortem from 45 animals aged 1 to 18 years coming from the Warsaw area. The effect of the health state, age and life conditions on the distribution of copper in the investigated organs was estimated. That element was determined using the method of inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). In the liver, the average Cu contents amounted to 24.04 mg kg−1 wet weight, in kidneys to 2.90 mg kg−1 wet weight and in muscles to 0.94 mg kg−1 wet weight. The highest values of copper content in particular tissues and organs were noted in the group of animals with neoplastic changes. In respect to the animal age the highest mean values of the copper content were noted in the oldest animals. They amounted to 30.97 mg kg−1 in the liver, 3.34 mg kg−1 in kidneys and 1.18 mg kg−1 wet weight in muscles. Considering life conditions of the dogs it was observed that the higher mean values in all the investigated organs occurred in dogs coming from the urban areas.  相似文献

Aluminum in lake water and in the organs of the fish Tribolodon hakonensis was investigated in Lake Usoriko (pH 3.6), Lake Inawashiroko (pH 5.0), and the Tenryu River (pH 7.7). The concentration of total soluble aluminum in the water was 0.51 mg l−1 in Usoriko, 0.05 mg l−1 in Inawashiroko, and less than 0.01 mg l−1 in the Tenryu. The chemical forms of soluble aluminum in the acid water were characterized as Al3+, AlL2+, and AlL≦1+. More than 90% of soluble aluminum in the water of Usoriko was Al3+, whereas AlL2+ was dominant in the water of Inawashiroko. The aluminum concentration in the organs of T. hakonensis in Usoriko was 42 μg g−1 wet weight in gills, 4.2 μg g−1 in muscle, 6.9 μg g−1 in bone, 12.7 μg g−1 in liver, 6.0 μg g−1 in kidney, and 6.0 μg g−1 in intestine, indicating accumulation of aluminum in the gills. The aluminum concentration in the organs of T. hakonensis living in Inawashiroko was approximately the same, in spite of the difference in water chemistry of the two acid lakes, especially for pH and aluminum. This suggests that aluminum accumulation might be controlled in the fish living in the acid lakes. In contrast, the aluminum concentration in the gills of T. hakonensis from the Tenryu was 2 μg g−1. Summary Cultivation of aSpodoptera exigua cloned cell line (SE-UCR-1A) for 8 to 9 mo. in a medium containing increasing amounts of bromodeoxyuridine (BUdr) resulted in the selection of a BUdr-resistant subline unable to grow in TNMFH medium supplemented with HAT (hypoxanthine, 10−4 M; aminopterin, 10−7 M; thymidine, 10−3 M). Subsequent assay of this subline revealed an absence of thymidine kinase (TK) activity. The specific activity of the wild-type (wt) cells was 878±192 counts per min (cpm)/μg supernatant protein compared to 9 cpm/μg for the BUdr-resistant, HAT-sensitive subline. In addition the wt activity was inhibited >90% by addition of BUdr to the assay, indicating that the activity is predominantly due to TK and not to a nonspecific nucleoside phosphotransferase. The morphology of the TK-deficient (−) cells was indistinguishable from that of wt cells. The doubling time for wt cells in TNMFH was 16 h; however, in TNMFH-HAT it was 36 h. In comparison the TK(−) cells in TNMFH had a doubling time of 61 h. Cultivation of TK(−) cells in nonselective TNMFH for 14 mo. to date has not changed the TK(−) characteristic of the subline. The host-cell TK was not required for development of progeny virus fromAutographa californica NPV inoculum. Although similar numbers of cells were infected (80 to 90%) in the wt and TK(−) lines and extracellular virus was generated at similar rates to similar titers in both media, the initial appearance of virus in the medium of TK(−) cell was delayed 10 to 20 h compared to wt cells. In addition, polyhedra appearance was similarly delayed in TK(−) cells and only 20 to 25% of the cells contained >10 polyhedra per cell compared to 75 to 90% for wt cells. Also, during infection of wt cells, specific activity of TK increased twofold peaking at 20 to 30 h postinfection, yet there was no stimulation of TK activity in infected TK(−) cells.  相似文献

Critical levels of selenium in raya (Brassica juncea Czern L.), maize (Zea mays L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and rice (Oryza sativa L.) were worked out by growing these crops in an alkaline silty loam soil treated with different levels of selenite-Se ranging from 1 to 25 μg g−1 soil. Significant decrease in dry matter yield was observed above a level of 5 μg Se g−1 soil in raya and maize; 4 μg Se g−1 soil in wheat and 10 μg Se g−1 soil in rice shoots. The critical level of Se in plants above which significant decrease in yield would occur was found to be 104.8 μg g−1 in raya, 76.9 μg g−1 in maize, 41.5 μg g−1 in rice and 18.9 μg g−1 in wheat shoots. Significant coefficients of correlation were observed between Se content above the critical level and dry matter yield of raya as well as rice (r = −0.99, P ≤ 0.01), wheat (r = −0.97, P ≤ 0.01) and maize ((r = −0.96, P ≤ 0.01). A synergistic relationship was observed between S and Se content of raya (r = 0.96, P ≤ 0.01), wheat (r = 0.89, P ≤ 0.01), rice (r = 0.85, P ≤ 0.01) and maize (r = 0.84, P ≤ 0.01). Raya, maize and rice absorbed Se in levels toxic for animal consumption (i.e. > 5 mg Se kg−1) when the soil was treated with more than 1.5 μg Se g−1. In case of wheat, application of Se more than 3 μg g−1 soil resulted in production of toxic plants.  相似文献

Pectic polysaccharides from dietary sources such as Decalepis hamiltonii—swallow root (SRPP), Hemidesmus indicus (HPP), Nigella sativa—black cumin (BCPP), Andrographis serpyllifolia—(APP), Zingiber officinale—ginger (GRPP) and, citrus pectin (CPP) were examined for galectin inhibitory activity. Inhibition of (a) galectin-3 of MDA-MB-231 cells induced hemagglutination of red blood cells; (b) galectin-3 mediated interaction between normal/metastatic human buccal cells (NBC)/(MBC) and; (c) invasion of MDA-MB-231 and MBC in the invasive chamber was assessed. Results indicated that SRPP inhibited hemagglutination at Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of 1.86 μg ml−1 equivalent of carbohydrate as apposed to those of BCPP (130 μg ml−1), APP (40 μg ml−1), HPP (40 μg ml−1) and CPP (25 μg ml−1). GRPP even at concentration >1–6 mg ml−1 did not inhibit agglutination. Also SRPP showed ∼15 and 2 fold potent anti hemagglutination activity relative to that of galectin-3 specific sugars—galactose (MIC-27.1 μg ml−1) and lactose (MIC-4.16 μg ml−1) respectively. Further, SRPP at 10 μg ml−1 inhibited agglutination of NBC by galectin-3 of MDA-MB-231 cells. Modified swallow root pectic polysaccharide (MSRPP) of 50 kDa retained anti hemagglutination activity (MIC of 1.03 μg ml−1) and inhibited MDA-MB-231 and MBC invasion by 73 and 50% with an IC50 of 136 and 200 μg ml−1 respectively. Both SRPP and MSRPP induced apoptosis up to 80% at 100 μg ml−1 concentration by activating ∼2 and 8 folds of Caspase-3 activity. Sugar composition analysis and its correlation with the galectin inhibitory property indicated that pectic polysaccharides with higher arabinose and galactose content—arabinogalactan inhibited hemagglutination significantly.  相似文献

Sargassum fulvellum is a brown alga recently introduced to the seaweed cultivation industry in Korea. There is current interest in the commercial scale of aquaculture of this species. For the artificial seeding and cultivation of this alga, growth and maturation were investigated from September 2002 to August 2003. Indoor culture experiments for maturation induction were also conducted at temperatures of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 C and irradiances of 20, 50, 80 and 100 μmol photons m−2 s−1 under 16:8 h (L:D) photoperiod. Within a given culture test range, higher temperature and irradiance levels favoured the maturation of receptacles in S. fulvellum. Using temperature and irradiance control for thalli, artificial seed production of this species could be done one month earlier than thalli matured in nature. Under natural condition, receptacle formation of the plants began in February, and the eggs were released from March to April. For mature thalli of 200 g wet wt., artificial seeding was complete enough for attachment on seed strings of 100 m. Mean production obtained from the artificial seeding technique in situ was 3.0 kg wet wt m−1 of culture rope during the cultivation period.  相似文献

Brassica rapa L. is an important vegetable crop in eastern Asia. The objective of this study was to investigate the genetic variation in leaf Zn, Fe and Mn accumulation, Zn toxicity tolerance and Zn efficiency in B. rapa. In total 188 accessions were screened for their Zn-related characteristics in hydroponic culture. In experiment 1, mineral assays on 111 accessions grown under sufficient Zn supply (2 μM ZnSO4) revealed a variation range of 23.2–155.9 μg g−1 dry weight (d. wt.) for Zn, 60.3–350.1 μg g−1 d. wt. for Fe and 20.9–53.3 μg g−1 d. wt. for the Mn concentration in shoot. The investigation of tolerance to excessive Zn (800 μM ZnSO4) on 158 accessions, by using visual toxicity symptom parameters (TSPs), identified different levels of tolerance in B. rapa. In experiment 2, a selected sub-set of accessions from experiment 1 was characterized in more detail for their mineral accumulation and tolerance to excessive Zn supply (100 μM and 300 μM ZnSO4). In this experiment Zn tolerance (ZT) determined by relative root or shoot dry biomass varied about 2-fold. The same six accessions were also examined for Zn efficiency, determined as relative growth under 0 μM ZnSO4 compared to 2 μM ZnSO4. Zn efficiency varied 1.8-fold based on shoot dry biomass and 2.6-fold variation based on root dry biomass. Zn accumulation was strongly correlated with Mn and Fe accumulation both under sufficient and deficient Zn supply. In conclusion, there is substantial variation for Zn accumulation, Zn toxicity tolerance and Zn efficiency in Brassica rapa L., which would allow selective breeding for these traits.  相似文献

The potential of alginate-immobilized Microcystis packed in a column for maximum removal of Cu2+ at different flow rates, biomass, and initial metal ion concentration was assessed in a continuous flow system. Although Cu2+ removal did occur at all the flow rates tested, it was maximum (54%) at 0.75-ml min−1 flow rate, 30 μg ml−1 initial metal ion concentration and 0.016 g biomass. Cu2+ removal was influenced by inlet metal ion concentration and biomass density. An increase in the biomass concentration from 0.016 to 0.128 g resulted in an apparent increase in percentage removal but the Cu2+ adsorbed per unit dry wt. declined. When the flow rate (0.75 ml min−1) and biomass density (0.064 g) were kept constant and the inlet metal ion concentration was varied from 10 to 150 μg ml−1, a 68% removal of Cu2+ was obtained at 50 μg ml−1 initial concentration in a time duration of 15 min. The metal-laden columns were efficiently desorbed and regenerated following elution with double distilled water (DDW) (pH 2) (89%). This was followed by 1 mm EDTA > 1 mm NTA > 0.1 mm EDTA > 1 mm HCl > 1 mm HNO3 > 5 mm CaCl2 > DDW (pH 7.0) > 1 mm NaHCO3 > 1 mm CaCl2. Of the total (2.83 mg) adsorbed Cu2+, 1.89 mg (67%) was desorbed by DDW (pH 2) within the first 20 min of elution time. Thereafter the desorption rate slowed down and only 22% (0.632 mg) desorption was obtained in the last 20 min. In contrast to water pH 2, the desorption of Cu2+ by 1 mm EDTA was very slow, the maximum being 8% after 40 min of elution. Physical, biogeochemical and photosynthetic parameters were measured in sea ice brine and ice core bottom samples in the north-western Weddell Sea during early spring 2006. Sea ice brines collected from sackholes were characterised by cold temperatures (range −7.4 to −3.8°C), high salinities (range 61.4–118.0), and partly elevated dissolved oxygen concentrations (range 159–413 μmol kg−1) when compared to surface seawater. Nitrate (range 0.5–76.3 μmol kg−1), dissolved inorganic phosphate (range 0.2–7.0 μmol kg−1) and silicic acid (range 74–285 μmol kg−1) concentrations in sea ice brines were depleted when compared to surface seawater. In contrast, NH4 + (range 0.3–23.0 μmol kg−1) and dissolved organic carbon (range 140–707 μmol kg−1) were enriched in the sea ice brines. Ice core bottom samples exhibited moderate temperatures and brine salinities, but high algal biomass (4.9–435.5 μg Chl a l−1 brine) and silicic acid depletion. Pulse amplitude modulated fluorometry was used for the determination of the photosynthetic parameters F v/F m, α, rETRmax and E k. The maximum quantum yield of photosystem II, F v/F m, ranged from 0.101 to 0.500 (average 0.284 ± 0.132) and 0.235 to 0.595 (average 0.368 ± 0.127) in the sea ice internal and bottom communities, respectively. The fluorometric measurements indicated medium ice algal photosynthetic activity both in the internal and bottom communities of the sea ice. An observed lack of correlation between biogeochemical and photosynthetic parameters was most likely due to temporally and spatially decoupled physical and biological processes in the sea ice brine channel system, and was also influenced by the temporal and spatial resolution of applied sampling techniques.  相似文献

In this investigation, clastogenic effects of Thymus kotschyanus var. glabrescens Boiss. extract (TE) and anticlastogenic effects of this extract against Mitomycin C (MMC) induced chromosome damage have been evaluated in human peripheral blood lymphocytes in vitro. Two series of experiments were conducted. In the first, only 10−5, 10−4, 10−3 and 10−2 μl ml−1 concentrations of TE were used for 48 h to detect potential clastogenicity. In the second, MMC (0.38 μg ml−1) plus 10−5, 10−4, 10−3 and 10−2 μl ml−1 concentrations of TE were used for 48 h to determine anticlastogenic effects. TE did not increase sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) (except 10−2 μl ml concentration) and chromosome aberrations (CAs) significantly compared with negative and solvent controls. However, it decreased the frequency of MMC induced chromosome aberrations. Decreasing was significant at 10−4, 10−3 and 10−2 μl ml−1 concentrations. Secondary infections related to neutropenia and functional defects of phagocytes are common consequences in patients treated for cancer. The hematopoietic colony-stimulating factors (CSF) have been introduced into clinical practice as additional supportive measures that can reduce the incidence of infectious complications in patients with cancer and neutropenia. The aim of this study was to determine the role of␣granuolcyte/macrophage(GM)-CSF and granulocyte(G)-CSF in enhancing in vivo human neutrophil function. A luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay was developed to evaluate whether the repair in neutropenia accompanies the ability of neutrophils to function. A dose of 5 μg G-CSF kg−1 day−1 [recombinant human (rHu) G-CSF; filgrastim] or 250 μg GM-CSF m−2 day−1 (rHu GM-CSF; molgramostim) was administered subcutaneously once daily to 12 metastatic cancer patients being treated with different cytotoxic regimens. All injections of CSF were given after the initiation of neutropenia and continued until the occurrence of an absolute neutrophil recovery. rHu GM-CSF and rHu G-CSF, administered once daily at the 250 μg m−2 day−1 and 5 μg kg−1 day−1 level, were effective in increasing the absolute neutrophil count and neutrophil function, as measured by an automated chemiluminescence system.
