Summary Mother-offspring data for alcohol dehydrogenase genotypes of a vineyard cellar population of D. melanogaster are best explained by a model that allows 21% of females in the population to mate twice with an 83% level of sperm displacement. A population model with multiple mating and sperm displacement is examined theoretically. A formula for the effective population size is derived under this model. Multiple mating increases the effective population size relative to single mating.  相似文献

Environmental seasonality is a potent evolutionary force, capable of maintaining polymorphism, promoting phenotypic plasticity and causing bet-hedging. In Drosophila, environmental seasonality has been reported to affect life-history traits, tolerance to abiotic stressors and immunity. Oscillations in frequencies of alleles underlying fitness-related traits were also documented alongside SNPs across the genome. Here, we test for seasonal changes in two recombination characteristics, crossover rate and crossover interference, in a natural D. melanogaster population from India using morphological markers of the three major chromosomes. We show that winter flies, collected after the dry season, have significantly higher desiccation tolerance than their autumn counterparts. This difference proved to hold also for hybrids with three independent marker stocks, suggesting its genetic rather than plastic nature. Significant between-season changes are documented for crossover rate (in 9 of 13 studied intervals) and crossover interference (in four of eight studied pairs of intervals); both single and double crossovers were usually more frequent in the winter cohort. The winter flies also display weaker plasticity of both recombination characteristics to desiccation. We ascribe the observed differences to indirect selection on recombination caused by directional selection on desiccation tolerance. Our findings suggest that changes in recombination characteristics can arise even after a short period of seasonal adaptation (~8–10 generations).Subject terms: Structural variation, Evolutionary biology, Evolutionary genetics  相似文献

Genetic study on emigration behavior of Drosophila melanogaster in the Ishinomaki population was conducted with 140 2nd chromosome lines. Fourteen sets of 5X5 partial diallel cross experiments were made to examine the emigration activity of F1 progeny. Emigration activity was scored using the method of Sakai et al. (1958). Additive genetic variance was 0.0377 +/- 0.0069 and dominance variance 0.0076 +/- 0.0032. The average degree of dominance of mildly deleterious genes for emigration activity in an equilibrium population was 0.069 +/- 0.042. The estimated degree of dominance at a gene locus affecting emigration activity was 0.067, which revealed nearly complete dominance for the tendency of heterozygote flies to move from their original place to another. Average degree of dominance of lethal gene for emigration activity was 0.012.  相似文献

The localization of the insertion sites of the 412 retrotransposable element was analysed by in situ hybridization to the polytene chromosomes of the genomes of males from a natural population of Drosophila melanogaster. Non-parametric statistical tests do not reveal any particular distribution of the insertion sites over the chromosomes, suggesting an apparently random distribution of the 412 element. Aggregation and dispersion tests were highly significant with data of copy number (when all genomes are pooled, many copies may be at a given site), suggesting the existence of sites with high insertion frequency. Comparison with other data from the literature confirms the tendency for a low proportion of insertions on the X chromosome in comparison with the autosomes, a result in agreement with selection acting against the detrimental effect of the 412 element insertions.  相似文献

Investigations on the chromosomal inversion polymorphism were conducted on a Korean (Taenung) natural population of D. melanogaster during the period 1978 to 1992. A total of 66 different endemic and cosmopolitan inversions were found on both major chromosome pairs II and III. Some of them proved to be rare cosmopolitan types (2LKA, 2LNS, 2LF, 2RCy, 3LM, 3RKI, and 3RK), while others were endemics. The distribution of breakpoints for endemic and rare cosmopolitan inversions are not random along the two autosome arms.With respect to frequency changes, the 15-year survey revealed that five of the cosmopolitan types (2Lt, 2RNS, 3LP, 3RC, and 3RMo) exhibit cyclical frequency changes, whereas gene arrangement 3RP shows relatively stable frequencies. Tests for correlations between gene arrangement frequencies and several climatic variables gave no clear evidence for such relationships. Only one correlation coefficient out of 64 was statistically significant. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The chromosomal distribution of P and I transposable elements was studied, by in situ hybridisation, in 25 isofemale lines of Drosophila melanogaster collected at Nasr'Allah in Tunisia. An important interline variability for the number of copies of both elements was revealed. The mean number of copies per line was 31.3 for P and 21.0 for I. Certain chromosome arms had a higher frequency of copies than others: arm 3R had the highest frequency of I elements; the X chromosome had the highest frequency of P elements and the lowest frequency of I elements. For both P and I elements the number of copies on the different chromosome arms is independent. Furthermore, there is no significant correlation between the number of copies of P and the number of copies of I for a given line. A study of the localisation of hybridisation sites on the X chromosome revealed the existence of preferred regions for each family. The population studied was of type M' in the P-M system of hybrid dysgenesis. There is no direct relationship between the M potential of an isofemale line and its number of copies of P elements. These results are compared with those of other investigators and the consequences for cytotype determination are discussed.  相似文献

The second chromosome Co-122 (Corato-122) extracted from a natural population of Drosophila melanogaster caught in Corato (Apulia) and maintained in the laboratory over the SM5 balancer chromosome, proved to carry: (1) a Segregation distorter factor, named Sd Co; (2) a recessive lethal mutation, termed mle-Co (maleless-Corato), which causes the lethality of only males; (3) another recessive lethal mutation, l(2)Co (lethal (2) Corato), probably arisen in the laboratory by mutation. This mutation accounts for the diminished recovery of homozygous females observed in the stock.The genetic features and the cytological analysis of the SD chromosome are reported, as well as the genetic localization of mle-Co and 1(2)Co and their cytogenetic mapping. An allelism test has ascertained that mle-Co is allelic to mle, a male-specific mutation described by Fukunaga et al., 1975. The tight linkage of mle-Co and 1(2)Co with Sd is discussed from the standpoint of population genetics.  相似文献

Ovarian and fat-body vitellogenin synthesis in Drosophila melanogaster   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The ovary and the fat body of Drosophila melanogaster both synthesise vitellogenins in vivo. The ovary contributes nearly as much vitellogenin to the yolk of an oocyte as does the fat body. Densitometry of fluorographs and gels has been used to compare the amount of the smallest vitellogenin polypeptide, yolk protein 3, synthesised by each tissue. Cell-free translations indicate that the ovary, in contrast to the fat body, contains a much reduced level of the mRNA for yolk protein 3 compared with the mRNAs for the other vitellogenin polypeptides. However, if tissues are cultured in vitro, the underproduction of this protein by the ovary is not significant. Because young embryos have levels of this polypeptide which are expected if the ovary has a low level of its corresponding mRNA, we argue that the ovary genuinely underproduces this protein in vivo and that the relative levels synthesised by the ovary in vitro are an artefact. Egg chambers of previtellogenic stages can synthesise vitellogenins, but the maximum level of vitellogenin synthesis occurs in egg chambers of the early vitellogenic stages. We conclude that the expression of the vitellogenin genes is subject to different controls at each site of synthesis. The possible cell types responsible for ovarian vitellogenin synthesis are discussed; the follicle epithelial cells are tentatively nominated for this role. We also suggest that a specific repression mechanism for vitellogenin gene expression exists in the ovary.  相似文献

Enzyme activity variation was assessed in several isofemale lines originating from two Hungarian Drosophila melanogaster populations. Samples from each population were taken from from two villages; 8-9 isofemale lines were established from each village. The activities of ADH, alphaGPDH, IDH and 6PGDH were determined in the adults (in the F1 generation) and in the larvae (in the F3 generation) as well. Enzyme activities were measured on starch gel after electrophoresis. The activity of the enzyme was detected in a single individual and it was also possible to determine its genotype. The results showed that most of the variation occurred within sites for all four enzymes. This within site variation was more or less equally partitioned into within and between isofemale line (family) components. A smaller portion of variation was attributable to the differences between the populations. Nevertheless, adult alphaGPDH, and larval IDH and 6PGDH activities exhibited significant differences between the two populations. Variation in larval activities of all enzymes was higher than that of the adults, but 6PGDH had considerably higher variation in the adults. The greater variation in larval activities probably reflected the greater environmental variation in the microhabitat of the larvae compared to that of the adults. Larval activities of the investigated enzymes showed much stronger correlation than adult activities. The correlation pattern in the adults differed greatly between the two populations.  相似文献

The Raleigh natural population of Drosophila melanogaster was reanalyzed with special attention to possible dysgenic effects during the extraction of chromosomes. About 600 second chromosomes were extracted from the Raleigh natural population, half in the cytoplasm of wild-caught females (native genetic background) and half in the cytoplasm of the laboratory line, C160(In(2LR)SM1, Cy/In(2LR)bw(V1)) (foreign genetic background). We could not find significant differences between the two extraction schemes in the frequency of lethal second chromosomes (Q = 0.252 for the lines with the negative genetic background vs. 0.231 for the lines with the foreign genetic background) or in the homozygous detrimental (D) and lethal (L) loads (D = 0.210 vs. 0.251; L = 0.287 vs. 0.264). The effective size of the population was estimated to be approximately 19,000, based on the allelism rate of lethal-bearing chromosomes. The homozygous load markedly decreased in the 15 years since a previous study of the same population.  相似文献

The strongest form of intralocus sexual conflict occurs when two conditions are met: (i) there is a positive intersexual genetic correlation for a trait and (ii) the selection gradients on the trait in the two sexes are in opposite directions. Intralocus sexual conflict can constrain the adaptive evolution of both sexes and thereby contribute to a species' 'gender load'. Previous studies of adult lifetime fitness of the same sets of genes expressed in both males and females have established that there is substantial intralocus conflict in the LHM laboratory-adapted population of Drosophila melanogaster. Here, we investigated whether a highly dimorphic trait-adult locomotory activity-contributed substantially to the established intralocus sexual conflict. To measure the selection gradient on activity level, both this trait and adult lifetime fitness were measured under the same environmental conditions to which the flies were adapted. We found significant phenotypic variation in both sexes for adult locomotory activity, and that the selection gradients on this variation were large and in opposite directions in the two sexes. Using hemiclonal analysis to screen 99% of the entire genome, we found abundant genetic variation for adult locomotory activity and showed that this variation occurs on both the X and autosomes. We also established that there is a strong positive intersexual genetic correlation for locomotory activity. These assays revealed that, despite the strong, extant sexual dimorphism for the trait, locomotory activity continues to contribute strongly to intralocus sexual conflict in this population.  相似文献

In an isolated population of Drosophila melanogaster on Ishigaki Island the chromosomal distribution of several retrotransposons, including copia, 412, 297, 17.6, I, and jockey elements, was examined by in situ hybridization. In this population the cosmopolitan inversion, In(2L)t, is known to exist in high frequency. One major haplotype concerning the occupied sites of the transposable elements was identified in the In(2L)t-carrying chromosomes. This haplotype is suggested to be the ancestral one. The age of the inversion in this local population was estimated to be 1,400 generations. The transposition rates of these elements were estimated based on the age of the inversion and the number of the elements lost and gained. The excision rates were in the range from 9.13 x 10(-5) to 2.25 x 10(-4) per site per generation. They were similar each other in the copia-like elements as well as in the LINE-like elements. The rate was higher in the copia-like elements than in the LINE-like elements. Insertions occurred in the range from 6.79 x 10(-4) to 9.05 x 10(-4) per element per generation. It is herein shown that both insertions and excisions occurred at a significantly higher rate in this population than in the laboratory.   相似文献

Genetic variation at 59 gene loci coding for enzymes (50) and larval proteins (9) has been studied in sympatric populations of Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans from insular and continental origin. The average number of alleles per locus, the mean proportion of polymorphic loci and the mean heterozygosity are similar both within and between species. There are however some significant differences between D. simulans populations in the genotypic frequencies for four polymorphic loci.  相似文献
