Tree monocultures of native and exotic species are frequently used as tools to catalyze forest recovery throughout the tropics. Although plantations may rapidly develop a canopy cover, they need to be evaluated as habitat for other organisms. We compared samples of leaf‐litter arthropods from two elevations in restored forest in the Colombian Andes. At the upper elevation (2,430 m), we compared native Andean alder (Alnus acuminata) plantation and secondary forest, and at the lower elevation (1,900 m) exotic Chinese ash (Fraxinus chinensis) plantation and secondary forest. Samples were obtained in two periods, March–April and September 1995. Species richness and abundance of arthropods were highest in secondary forest at the lower elevation. There were no differences in richness between both plantations and high‐elevation forest. Arthropod richness and abundance increased in the second sampling period in both secondary forest types and the ash plantation but not in the alder plantation, reflecting population recovery after the dry season. Alder leaf litter apparently buffered seasonal variations in arthropod richness and abundance. Composition of morphospecies was different among forest types. Although arthropod richness was lower in ash plantations compared to secondary forest, plantations still provided habitat for these organisms. On the other hand, the alder plantation was not different from secondary forest at the same elevation. At our site, plantations are embedded in a forested landscape. Whether our results apply to different landscape configurations and at different spatial scales needs to be established. The use of plantations as a restoration tool depends on the objectives of the project and on local conditions of forest cover and soils. 相似文献

Potential Biomass Accumulation in Amazonian Regrowth Forests 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Biomass accumulation in the secondary forests of abandoned pastures and slash-and-burn agricultural fallows is an important
but poorly constrained component of the regional carbon budget for the Brazilian Amazon. Using empirical relationships derived
from a global analysis, we predicted potential aboveground biomass accumulation (ABA) for the region's regrowth forests based
on soil texture and climate data. For regrowth forests on nonsandy soils, the globally derived relationship provided a nearly
unbiased linear predictor of Amazonian validation data consisting of 66 stands at seven sites; there was no significant difference
between stands that regrew following use as pasture land and those that regrew following slash-and-burn agriculture. For regrowth
forests on nonsandy soil, the 1 sigma error range of our ABA model was 58%–171% for the Amazonian validation data. For regrowth
forests on sandy soils, the validation data were limited to 19 stands at one site, and the globally derived relationship was
substantially biased multiplicatively and nonlinearly. Hence we developed a regional refinement by adding to our validation
data ABA values from the two Amazonian sites with sandy soil that had previously been included in the global analysis. Based
on a conservative jackknife goodness-of-fit assessment (leaving out one site at a time), we calculated a 1 sigma error range
of 42%–158% for our sandy soil Amazonian regrowth forest ABA model. We present our predictions of potential regrowth forest
ABA as a set of 0.5° resolution maps for the region at 5, 10, and 20 years following abandonment.

The purpose of this study was to characterize the diversity and abundance of indigenous soil photomicrobes with respect to the physico-chemical environment at a highly eroded loamy sand mountain situated in mid-Taiwan. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and clone library were employed to characterize the operational taxonomic unit of photomicrobes present in the natural environment. The predominant species identified by plastid 23S rRNA were green algae belonging to the genera Bracteacoccus, Coccomyxa, and Koliella, while sub-dominant species included the cyanobacteria Leptolyngbya and Microcoleus. Principal component analysis indicated that the distribution of soil photomicrobes exhibited a strong dependency on the chemical variables, such as organic materials, total nitrogen, and inorganic nutrients, and that the low diversity was related to low water potential status. The present study illustrated the main factors affecting the distribution of soil photomicrobes and provided the basic characteristics of biological soil crusts in arid lands in subtropical areas. 相似文献

In a 1-ha plot in an unflooded moist tropical forest in Reserva de Producción Faunística Cuy abeno in Amazonian Ecuador, 96 species of vascular herbaceous plants were found rooted in the ground; they were all perennials; 25 species were pteridophytes, representing 11 families, 71 species (14 families) were angiosperms. Araceae, Marantaceae, and Poaceae were the most important angiosperm families. The total abundance of the ground herbs was 10 960 individuals, the total cover was 250 m2, or 2.5% of the 1-ha plot. Species of ground herbs exhibit two major life-form strategies: the obligate terrestrial species (59%) are restricted to the ground; the facultative terrestrial species (41 %) have climbing and epiphytic individuals as well. Difference in life-form strategy as well as difference in edaphic specialization along a topographic gradient are two factors that may enhance the number of coexisting species within the 1-ha sample plot. 相似文献

Most phenological studies to date have taken place in upland forest above the maximum flood level of nearby streams and rivers. In this paper, we examine the phenological patterns of tree assemblages in a large Amazonian forest landscape, including both upland (terra firme) and seasonally flooded (várzea and igapó) forest. The abundance of vegetative and reproductive phenophases was very seasonal in all forests types. Both types of flooded forest were more deciduous than terra firme, shedding most of their leaves during the inundation period. Pulses of new leaves occurred mainly during the dry season in terra firme, whereas those in the two floodplain forests were largely restricted to the end of the inundation period. Flowering was concentrated in the dry season in all forest types and was strongly correlated with the decrease in rainfall. The two floodplain forests concentrated their fruiting peaks during the inundation period, whereas trees in terra firme tended to bear fruits at the onset of the wet season. The results suggest that the phenological patterns of all forest types are largely predictable and that the regular and prolonged seasonal flood pulse is a major determinant of phenological patterns in várzea and igapó, whereas rainfall and solar irradiance appear to be important in terra firme. The three forest types provide a mosaic of food resources that has important implications for the conservation and maintenance of wide‐ranging frugivore populations in Amazonian forests. 相似文献

In Amazonia, the assemblages of several taxa differ significantly between upland terra firme and white‐water flooded várzea forests, but little is known about the diversity and distribution of bats in these two forest types. We compare the spatio‐temporal patterns of bat assemblage composition and structure in adjacent terra firme and várzea forests in the lower Purus River region of central Brazilian Amazonia. Bats were sampled using mist nets at five sites in each forest type during 40 nights (2400 net‐hours). We captured 1069 bats representing 42 species and Phyllostomidae bats comprised 99.3 percent of all captures. The bat assemblages in várzea and terra firme forests were significantly different, mainly due to a marked dissimilarity in species composition and in the number of captures during high‐water season. In addition, bat assemblages within forest types differed significantly between seasons for both terra firme and várzea. Frugivores dominated the bat assemblages in both forest types. Overall guild structure did not change between várzea and terra firme or between seasons, but frugivore and animalivore abundance increased significantly in várzea forest during the inundation. The difference in assemblage structure observed in the high‐water season is probably caused by the annual várzea flooding, which provides an effective barrier to the persistence of many understory bats. We also hypothesize that some bat species may undertake seasonal movements between forest types in response to fruit abundance, and our results further underline the importance of floodplain habitats for the conservation of species in the Amazon. 相似文献

Factors Affecting the Relative Abundance of Nuclear Copies of Mitochondrial DNA (Numts) in Hominoids
I. D. Soto-Calderón E. J. Lee M. I. Jensen-Seaman N. M. Anthony 《Journal of molecular evolution》2012,75(3-4):102-111
Although nuclear copies of mitochondrial DNA (numts) can originate from any portion of the mitochondrial genome, evidence from humans suggests that more variable parts of the mitochondrial genome, such as the mitochondrial control region (MCR), are under-represented in the nucleus. This apparent deficit might arise from the erosion of sequence identity in numts originating from rapidly evolving mitochondrial sequences. However, the extent to which mitochondrial sequence properties impacts the number of numts detected in genomic surveys has not been evaluated. In order to address this question, we: (1) conducted exhaustive BLAST searches of MCR numts in three hominoid genomes; (2) assessed numt prevalence across the four MCR sub-domains (HV1, CCD, HV2, and MCRF); (3) estimated their insertion rates in great apes (Hominoidea); and (4) examined the relationship between mitochondrial DNA variability and numt prevalence in sequences originating from MCR and coding regions of the mitochondrial genome. Results indicate a marked deficit of numts from HV2 and MCRF MCR sub-domains in all three species. These MCR sub-domains exhibited the highest proportion of variable sites and the lowest number of detected numts per mitochondrial site. Variation in MCR insertion rate between lineages was also observed with a pronounced burst in recent integrations within chimpanzees and orangutans. A deficit of numts from HV2/MCRF was observed regardless of age, whereas HV1 is under-represented only in older numts (>25 million years). Finally, more variable mitochondrial genes also exhibit a lower identity with nuclear copies and because of this, appear to be under-represented in human numt databases. 相似文献

Cytochrome b DNA sequence data (ca. 1,140 bp) of 66 Alouatta belzebul from the Amazonian and the Atlantic Forests of Brazil were used for phylogenetic reconstructions and population studies. Our sample consisted of 60 specimens from the Amazonian Forest (captured in 1984 and 1998 in Pará‐PA state) and six specimens from the Atlantic Forest (Paraíba‐PB state). We found 32 haplotypes, 23 in PA‐1984 (with 12 present in more than one individual), 11 in PA‐1998 (with two present in more than one individual), and a single haplotype in the PB sample. Animals from PA‐1984 and PA‐1998 shared three haplotypes while animals from Pará and Paraíba did not share any haplotype. We found 57 variable sites, consisting of 53 transitions and four transversions, with most replacements occurring at third codon position (77.19%) and less frequently at first and second positions (10.53 and 12.28%, respectively). Genetic distance between all haplotypes varied between 0 and 1.2%. Nucleotide diversity estimates between PA‐1984 haplotypes and PA‐1998 haplotypes were the same (π=0.01), and haplotype diversity estimates were very similar (h=0.96 and 0.93 for PA‐1984 and PA‐1998, respectively). Maximum parsimony, median‐joining, split decomposition, and TCS showed that PA and PB haplotypes had not drastically diverged and that subsequent radiation within these regions was not apparent. No temporal structure was found between PA‐1984 and PA‐1998. The sum of square deviation estimate for PA‐1984 equaled 0.01 (P=0.23), in agreement with a hypothetical model of sudden expansion contrary to PA‐1998 whose sum of square deviation estimate (0.40; P=0.04) was not compatible with this model, although the small sample size of PA‐1998 as well as the smaller area of capture could have also accounted for this result. Fu's Fs and R2 statistical neutrality tests corroborated these propositions. Lack of drastic differentiation was attributable to the once existing connection between the Atlantic and the Amazonian forests at a non‐distant past. Am. J. Amazonian forests harbor a large variety of understory herbs adapted to areas with different hydrological conditions, ranging from well‐drained to seasonally flooded forests. The presence versus absence of flooding forms the extremes of a hydrological gradient, with various intermediate conditions, such as seasonal soil waterlogged areas, in between. We investigated the relationship between understory herbs and hydrological conditions in Central Amazonian forests using eighty‐eight 250 × 2 m plots distributed along a 600‐km transect. Hydrological conditions were determined regionally by precipitation and locally by topographic conditions based on drainage potential, flooding height and soil permeability (sand content). Soil cation concentration was used as a proxy for soil fertility. The floristic dissimilarities among plots were visualized by Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling, and simple and multiple regressions were used to identify the best predictor of herb species composition. Local drainage potential was more important in determining herb species composition than soil fertility or precipitation at non‐flooded and flooded sites. Flooded sites comprised a very distinctive herb species composition even when the flood height was low (0.3 m). We conclude that hydrological conditions are the primary constraint of herb distribution within this flat regional landscape with moderate amounts of soil fertility variation (0.09–2.280 cmol(+)/kg). Hydrological models that consider local water conditions explained the largest part of herb species composition. Therefore, predictions of species distribution based on large‐scale climatic variables may underestimate the favorable area for understory herbs if the variation on local hydrological conditions is not considered. 相似文献

Body temperatures and thermoregulatory behaviour of the teiid lizard Ameiva ameiva inhabiting the edge and the understory were studied in Central Amazonian forests. Despite of differences in the thermal profile of the habitats, the mean body temperature was the same for active lizards observed at the edge or inside the forest, where only slight peculiarities in thermoregulatory behaviour were observed. A. ameiva is capable of maintaining body temperature significantly above microhabitat temperature. 相似文献

Asplenium nidus is an abundant epiphytic fern of tropical rain forests in the Old World, where it plays an important ecological role in the forest canopy as host to diverse arthropod communities. We investigated the factors that determine the distribution and abundance of A. nidus in the canopy of an aseasonal lowland dipterocarp forest at Pasoh Forest Reserve, Malaysia. We found that A. nidus was more abundant in the understory, and on hosts with smooth bark and relatively flat branch angles. Ferns were found on a wide diversity and size range of host taxa. However, both host taxa and host diameter at breast height had a significant effect on A. nidus occupancy. Asplenium nidus had an aggregated spatial distribution at all scales within the study area. Spatial aggregation at larger scales appears to be driven by habitat preference, as A. nidus abundance was positively associated with swampy areas and negatively associated with hilly areas. At smaller scales, limited dispersal of their wind-dispersed spores most likely explains the aggregated distribution. Larger individuals occurred higher in the canopy and were more common in the hilly area. Thus, the distribution of A. nidus may represent a trade-off between the availability of suitable microsites for establishment in the understory and better growth conditions higher in the canopy. However, A. nidus is known to comprise a complex of cryptic species, and future studies should incorporate molecular techniques to elucidate the potential role of speciation in explaining these patterns. 相似文献

Despite the significance of marine habitat-forming organisms, little is known about their large-scale distribution and abundance in deeper waters, where they are difficult to access. Such information is necessary to develop sound conservation and management strategies. Kelps are main habitat-formers in temperate reefs worldwide; however, these habitats are highly sensitive to environmental change. The kelp Ecklonia radiate is the major habitat-forming organism on subtidal reefs in temperate Australia. Here, we provide large-scale ecological data encompassing the latitudinal distribution along the continent of these kelp forests, which is a necessary first step towards quantitative inferences about the effects of climatic change and other stressors on these valuable habitats. We used the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) facility of Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) to survey 157,000 m2 of seabed, of which ca 13,000 m2 were used to quantify kelp covers at multiple spatial scales (10–100 m to 100–1,000 km) and depths (15–60 m) across several regions ca 2–6° latitude apart along the East and West coast of Australia. We investigated the large-scale geographic variation in distribution and abundance of deep-water kelp (>15 m depth) and their relationships with physical variables. Kelp cover generally increased with latitude despite great variability at smaller spatial scales. Maximum depth of kelp occurrence was 40–50 m. Kelp latitudinal distribution along the continent was most strongly related to water temperature and substratum availability. This extensive survey data, coupled with ongoing AUV missions, will allow for the detection of long-term shifts in the distribution and abundance of habitat-forming kelp and the organisms they support on a continental scale, and provide information necessary for successful implementation and management of conservation reserves. 相似文献

This work presents data on the relative diversity, abundance, and distribution patterns of primates in a 20 km2 area of the Tapiche River in the Peruvian Amazon. Population data were collected while the study area was both inundated and dry (March to September 1997) using conventional line-transect census techniques. Survey results reflected the presence of 11 primate species, but population parameters on only eight of the species will be presented, including saddleback tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis), Bolivian squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis), brown capuchins (Cebus apella), white-fronted capuchins (Cebus albifrons), monk sakis (Pithecia monachus), red titi monkeys (Callicebus cupreus), red uakaris (Cacajao calvus), and red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus). Woolly monkeys (Lagothrix lagotricha), night monkeys (Aotus nancymaae), and pygmy marmosets (Callithrix pygmaea) were also seen in the area. The data for the smaller-bodied primates is similar to that reported almost 18 years earlier, but the data for the larger-bodied primates reflect a loss in the number of animals present in the area. Pressure from hunters and the timber industry may account for declining numbers of large-bodied primates, while it appears that natural features peculiar to the conservation area contribute to the patchy pattern of distribution. 相似文献

In the Peruvian Amazon, white‐sand forests are patchily distributed and restricted to a few localities in the North. Although recent studies have documented patterns of habitat specialization by plants in these unique forests, very few studies of the fauna of these habitats have been conducted. The species composition of the avifauna of the white‐sand forests at six localities in the region was sampled by conducting transects and point counts. Surrounding habitats were also sampled to compare avifaunal communities and to determine the degree of restriction of bird species to white‐sand habitats. Non‐metric multidimensional scaling analysis showed that bird communities of white‐sand forests were more similar to each other than they were to terra firme or flooded forest communities. Sites on either side of the Amazon‐Marañón barrier were the most similar within habitat type consistent with the hypothesis that these rivers represent a major biogeographic barrier. Twenty‐six species, belonging to 13 families, were to some degree specialized to white‐sand forests. This is the first comprehensive ornithological assessment carried out on these habitats in Peru. The high degree of habitat specialization found in these 26 bird species highlights the need for conservation and management measures that will protect white‐sand forests. 相似文献

Although tropical wet forests are generally more diverse than dry forests for many faunal groups, few studies have compared bat diversity among dry forests. I compared ground level phyllostomid bat community structure between two tropical dry forests with different precipitation regimes. Parque National Palo Verde in northwestern Costa Rica represents one of the wettest tropical dry forests (rainfall 1.5 m/yr), whereas the Chamela‐Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve on the Pacific coast of central Mexico represents one of the driest (750 mm/yr). Mist net sampling was conducted at the two study sites to compare changes in ground level phyllostomid bat community structure between regions and seasons. Palo Verde was more diverse than Chamela and phyllostomid species showed low similarity between sites (Classic Jaccard = 0.263). The distinct phyllostomid communities observed at these two dry forest sites demonstrates that variants of tropical dry forest can be sufficiently different in structure and composition to affect phyllostomid communities. At both dry forest sites, abundance of the two most common foraging guilds (frugivores and nectarivores) differed between seasons, with greatest numbers of individuals captured coinciding with highest chiropterophilic resource abundance. 相似文献

Lowland Amazon is climatically one of the least seasonal regions on the planet, but little is known about how this is reflected in ecological seasonality. The central objective of this study was to determine whether seasonal fluctuations in the availability of fruit resources in Neotropical forests are sufficiently marked to affect the ecology and physiology of frugivorous bats. Seasonal variations in the overall bat abundance and in the captures, body condition, and reproductive activity of the two most abundant species, Carollia perspicillata and Artibeus planirostris, were studied within a region of central Brazilian Amazonia dominated by a mosaic of nonflooded (terra firme) and seasonally flooded forests (várzea and igapó). Concurrent seasonal changes in fruit availability were measured. The abundance of fruits was markedly seasonal, with far fewer resources available during the low-water season. There was a positive correlation between fruit and bat abundance. Overall, bats did not increase the consumption of arthropods during the period of fruit shortage. In A. planirostris, the body condition declined when fruits were scarcer. In both C. perspicillata and A. planirostris, foraging and reproductive activity were positively correlated with fruit availability. Consequently, the results suggest that resource seasonality is sufficiently marked to affect frugivorous bats and force them to make important eco-physiological adjustments. 相似文献

Most mistletoe species that live in savanna patches are subjected to frequent fires. Although having similar habits, even congener species may parasitize very different host species and show different degrees of specialization that may differentially affect their resistance to fire. We studied three congener mistletoe species with a diverse degree of specificity to their hosts: Psittacanthus biternatus, Psittacanthus eucalyptifolius and Psittacanthus plagiophyllus, the first being the most generalist species, and the last the most specialist. We investigated their prevalence (proportion of hosts infected) in 35 plots of an Amazonian savanna, with different fire histories. Our aim was to understand if they respond similarly to fire frequency and the abundance of their hosts. Additionally, we experimentally applied fire to individuals of the three species using a portable propane flamethrower to test for the influence of mistletoe species, plant size and quantity of heat pulses (single or double burn) on mistletoe survivorship. Prevalence varied greatly among species: 1.5 percent for P. biternatus, 4.8 percent for P. eucalyptifolius and 20 percent for P. plagiophyllus. Prevalence of P. plagiophyllus was negatively related to fire frequency, while for the other two species it was not. Psittacanthus biternatus had a higher probability of survival compared with the other two species, and larger plants were more likely to survive under single burn treatment and to regenerate through sprouting. Our results suggest that, due to complex interactions between fire, hosts and mistletoes, even sympatric species may respond differently to fire frequency and host abundance. Nitrogen-fixing epiphytes (especially lichens with a cyanobacterial symbiont—cyanolichens) have the potential to contribute significant amounts of nitrogen (N) to montane tropical forests, which are typically low in N—but the factors controlling the abundance and distribution of epiphytic cyanolichens are poorly understood. In long-term fertilization experiments in montane forests on a 4.l million-yr-old Oxisol on the island of Kauà'i and on a 152-yr-old lava flow on the island of Hawai'i, the epiphytic cyanolichen Pseudocyphellaria crocata increased significantly in abundance in canopies of host trees fertilized with phosphorus (P). There was no response to fertilization with N or other essential elements. Nitrogen-fixation rates were also elevated in lichens in P-fertilized plots at both sites. Phosphorus supply to host trees may be an important factor controlling N inputs to montane tropical forests by N-fixing epiphytes. 相似文献
