The enigmatic placozoans, which hold a key position in the metazoan Tree of Life, have attracted substantial attention in many areas of biological and biomedical research. While placozoans have become an emerging model system, their ecology and particularly biogeography remain widely unknown. In this study, we use modelling approaches to explore habitat preferences, and distribution pattern of the placozoans phylum. We provide hypotheses for discrete ecological niche separation between genetic placozoan lineages, which may also help to understand biogeography patterns in other small marine invertebrates. We, here, used maximum entropy modelling to predict placozoan distribution using 20 environmental grids of 9.2 km2 resolution. In addition, we used recently developed metrics of niche overlap to compare habitat suitability models of three genetic clades. The predicted distributions range from 55°N to 44°S and are restricted to regions of intermediate to warm sea surface temperatures. High concentrations of salinity and low nutrient concentrations appear as secondary factors. Tests of niche equivalency reveal the largest differences between placozoan clades I and III. Interestingly, the genetically well-separated clades I and V appear to be ecologically very similar. Our habitat suitability models predict a wider latitudinal distribution for placozoans, than currently described, especially in the northern hemisphere. With respect to biogeography modelling, placozoans show patterns somewhere between higher metazoan taxa and marine microorganisms, with the first group usually showing complex biogeographies and the second usually showing “no biogeography.”  相似文献

Obelia dichotoma is a thecate hydroid with a worldwide distribution, occurring mainly on shallow water hard substrates. Since the trophic ecology of hydroids in polar waters is badly understood, the aim of the present work was to study qualitatively and quantitatively the diet of these organisms in an Arctic environment and to determine their trophic significance. For this purpose, the density of the hydroid population was documented, and simultaneously, zooplankton was sampled in two different years (1997 and 1998). Prey capture rates were estimated by analysing the gastrovascular content of the polyps in a diurnal cycle. Additionally, the digestion time of O. dichotoma was measured by laboratory feeding experiments using diatoms as food items. The analyses of the gastrovascular cavities of the polyps sampled during the diurnal cycles showed that O. dichotoma fed mainly on faecal pellets, organic matter and microalgae. Zooplankton prey was also observed, but gastrovascular contents and zooplankton abundance did not show any correlation in both years. The consumption rates of the hydroid populations differed between the 2 years. It was almost double (8.9 mg Carbon m?2) in 1998 compared to 1997 (5.5 mg Carbon m?2). The significance of the environmental variability in the feeding ecology and population dynamics of hydroids under Arctic conditions is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. We compared growth rates and final morphological states of the athecate colonial hydroid Podocoryna carnea in two nutritional environments: one varying the quantity of food provided at a fixed interval and the second varying the time between feedings of a fixed quantity. In both environments, replicate colonies were either fed uniformly, or fed on only one side and starved on the other. In addition, we fed colonies fluorescence-labeled cultures of Artemia salina and documented the subsequent distribution of label. We found that both the growth rates and the final morphological state varied logarithmically with food supply. Heterogeneous feeding had a marked effect on colony morphology, with a sharp boundary in polyp number, stolon density, and polyp size forming at the fed–unfed interface. The distribution of fluorescence was correlated with sites of colony growth. These results confirm and extend early work on the priority of growth zones in colonial hydroids, and present new challenges for understanding the relationship among energy metabolism, gastrovascular circulation, and colony form.  相似文献

Abstract. After feeding, polyps of colonial hydroids contract regularly, dispersing food throughout the colony via the gastrovascular fluid. Such contractions may trigger signaling pathways that allow colonies to grow in an adaptive manner, i.e., to initiate development of more polyps in food‐rich areas and to suppress polyp development in food‐poor areas. In this context, we investigated the structure and potential signaling of the junction between polyps and stolons in colonies of the hydroid Podocoryna carnea. Using transmission electron microscopy, we found that the density of mitochondrion‐rich epitheliomuscular cells was low in polyp and stolon tissues except at or near the polyp‐stolon junction, where many of these mitochondrion‐rich cells occur in ectodermal tissue. In vivo fluorescence microscopy suggests that these mitochondria are a principal source of the metabolic signals of the colony. Both native fluorescence of NAD(P)H and fluorescence from peroxides (visualized with H2DCFDA) co‐localize to this region of the polyp. Rhodamine 123 fluorescence suggests that both these metabolic signals emanate from mitochondria. To test whether such metabolic signals may be involved in colony pattern formation, inbred lines of P. carnea were used. Colonies of a runner‐like inbred line grow with widely spaced polyps and long stolonal connections, much like wild‐type colonies in a food‐poor environment. Colonies of a sheet‐like inbred line grow with closely spaced polyps and short stolonal connections, similar to wild‐type colonies in a food‐rich environment. Polyp‐stolon junctions in runner‐like and sheet‐like colonies were imaged for the fluorescence of H2DCFDA. Densitometric analysis of this signal indicates that the mitochondria in epitheliomuscular cells of runner‐like polyps emit greater amounts of peroxides. Because peroxides and other reactive oxygen species are frequently intermediaries in metabolic signaling pathways, we suspect that such signaling may indeed occur at polyp‐stolon junctions, affecting colony pattern formation in these inbred lines and possibly in hydroid colonies in general.  相似文献

The increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) leads to rising temperatures and acidification in the oceans, which directly or indirectly affects all marine organisms, from bacteria to animals. We here ask whether the simplest—and possibly also the oldest—metazoan animals, the placozoans, are particularly sensitive to ocean warming and acidification. Placozoans are found in all warm and temperate oceans and are soft‐bodied, microscopic invertebrates lacking any calcified structures, organs, or symmetry. We here show that placozoans respond highly sensitive to temperature and acidity stress. The data reveal differential responses in different placozoan lineages and encourage efforts to develop placozoans as a potential biomarker system.  相似文献

Placozoans are marine invertebrates found in tropical and subtropical waters. Their body plan is among the simplest of free-living animals. The present study determined the mitochondrial genome sequence of a placozoan collected on the coast of Shirahama, Wakayama, Honshu, Japan, and compared it with those of Trichoplax adhaerens from the Red Sea and of three strains from the Caribbean Sea. The sequences of mitochondrial respiratory chain of the Japanese placozoan genes are very similar to those of the BZ49 strain from the Caribbean Sea. However, there are distinct differences in gene arrangement, such as the location of two open reading frames. This Japanese placozoan is therefore distinguishable from the other strains. Based on current knowledge of placozoan 16S diversity our 'Shirahama' strain most likely represents the H15 lineage, known from the Philippines. In the mitochondrial genome of placozoans, substitution rates are slower than in bilaterians, whereas the rate of rearrangements is faster.  相似文献

The stolonal mat is an anatomical feature correlated with increased colonial integration in several lineages of the cnidarian class Hydrozoa. Cnox-2 is a Hox gene known to be expressed in the body column of the cnidarian polyp. We report the pattern of Cnox-2 expression in both the stolonal mat and free stolons of the hydroid Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus. The gene is found to have high levels of expression in the mat similar to that found in the basal portion of the polyp, but it is not detectably expressed in those regions of free stolons where polyps are budded. These findings suggest that the stolonal mat arose via an expansion of the basal ectoderm of the polyp.  相似文献

We here address placozoan distribution and phylogeography in five locations in the Caribbean Sea. We performed a coarse-resolution presence/absence survey of placozoans in Belize, Bermuda, Grenada, Jamaica, and Panama and a fine-resolution study of the distribution of placozoans in Twin Cays, Belize. Placozoans were recovered in every country sampled. Animals were sequenced at the mitochondrial 16S rDNA locus, and our analysis identified four of the five previously identified clades present in the Caribbean. In addition, we discovered two new haplotypes within one of these clades, and we found sympatric clades in Belize, Bermuda, Jamaica, and Panama. These studies provide further molecular evidence for species diversity within the Phylum Placozoa.  相似文献

The effects of adding the molluscicides methiocarb and metaldehyde to pelleted foods on the encounter, acceptance, feeding and post-meal stages of the foraging sequence of the slugs Deroceras reticulatum and Arion distinctus have been studied using two complementary laboratory techniques - video and acoustic recordings. Whereas non-feeding slugs encountered wheat grains at random, slugs which fed on wheat grains or pellets encountered them more frequently because of changes in locomotor pattern and olfactory attraction. Slugs would almost always feed on the first pellet they found, regardless of the presence or absence of molluscicide: thereafter they fed on only one pellet in every four encountered. Far fewer slugs accepted wheat grains. Slugs ate much less from pellets containing molluscicide, and meals were more irregular. The relative amounts of non-toxic pellets of various types which were eaten gave no indication of the relative amounts eaten when molluscicide was added. Meal length did not correlate well with meal size on different pellet types because softer pellets were eaten faster. Most Deroceras fed several times on non-toxic pellets or pellets containing methiocarb, although subsequent meals were shorter than the first meal. Most returned to shelters by dawn. In contrast, metaldehydefed slugs were rapidly immobilised; they seldom fed again, moved little, and few regained shelter. Arion were also inhibited after methiocarb meals but Deroceras were not. Arion distinctus moved less, ate less during a meal, and had fewer meals on nontoxic baits than Deroceras reticulatum.  相似文献

Summary Antisera to the sequence Arg-Phe-amide (RF-amide) have a high affinity to the nervous system of fixed hydroid polyps. Whole-mount incubations of several Hydra species with RFamide antisera visualize the three-dimensional structure of an ectodermal nervous system in the hypostome, tentacles, gastric region and peduncle. In the hypostome of Hydra attenuata a ganglion-like structure occurs, consisting of numerous sensory cells located in a region around the mouth opening and a dense plexus of processes which project mostly radially towards the bases of the tentacles. In Hydra oligactis an ectodermal nerve ring was observed lying at the border of hypostome and tentacle bases. This nerve ring consists of a few large ganglion cells with thick processes forming a circle around the hypostome. This is the first direct demonstration of a nerve ring in a hydroid polyp.Incubation of Hydractinia echinata gastrozooids with RFamide antisera visualizes an extremly dense plexus of neuronal processes in body and head regions. A ring of sensory cells around the mouth opening is the first group of neurons to show RFamide immunoreactivity during the development of a primary polyp. In gonozooids the oocytes and spermatophores are covered with strongly immunoreactive neurons.All examples of whole-mount incubations with RF-amide antisera clearly show that hydroid polyps have by no means a diffuse nerve net, as is often believed, and that neuronal centralization and plexus formation are common in these animals. The examples also show that treatment of intact fixed animals with RFamide antisera is a useful technique to study the anatomy or development of a principal portion of the hydroid nervous system.  相似文献

Many filamentous bacteria and fungi tend to form pellets, or mixtures of dispersed mycelium and pellets in liquid fermentation broths. In some cases, a specific kind of morphology is required for optimum product yield. When quantitative analysis and characterization of the pellet morphology are needed, an image processing system can be used. It allows a fast and reproducible analysis of the frequency distribution of pellet size, mean pellet size, contents of pellets, or their shape. The use of such a system allows for an on-line analysis. For a demonstration of the method, results of two fermentations of Streptomyces tendae are shown.  相似文献

Captive muntjac fed on vegetation had a daily defecation rate of 7 to 8.2.pellet groups. Even in the cold month of February 97.6% of pellets decayed within 80 days but for 8 other months the range was 4 to 23 days. Emphasis is given to the need for site-specific information when decay rate is required to assess population size from dung counts. The morphology, dimensions, weight and group size of pellets are described as an aid to distinguish them from the faeces of other cervids.  相似文献

By the example of the Penicillin G production, it is shown, how the production process can be improved by using pellet suspension instead of highly viscous filamentous mycel. In order to optimize the pellet geometry, dissolved oxygen concentration profiles were measured, and the overall mass transfer resistance was calculated in the pellets; histological investigations were carried out with pellets also. All measurements indicated that the optimal pellet diameter is 400 μm. When using this pellet, the specific power input was reduced from 4–5 kW/m3 to 0.8 kW/m3. The losses during the recovery of Penicillin G can be reduced below 1% by using reactive extraction. The thermodynamics, kinetics and reaction technique of reactive extraction of Penicillin G are also taken into account.  相似文献

An experiment involving 1360 growing finishing pigs was undertaken to examine the effect of pellet size and pellet quality, as measured by the Holmen pellet durability test, on pig performance. A barley and soya bean meal diet was used and pellets were of two sizes, 5 and 10 mm diameter. Pellet quality was varied to give two types of pellet by steam conditioning and screening procedure during the pelleting process. The mean difference obtained in pellet durability was 11%.

Pig performance between 30 and 80 kg liveweight was not affected by either pellet size or pellet quality. There were small non-significant trends in favour of both the smaller pellets and the lower quality pellets. These trends, of the order of 1% or less, followed the same pattern as the dry matter content of the diets. The smaller diameter pellets were dried more efficiently in the cooling process and the low durability pellets had less steam added during the manufacturing process, which was reflected in the dry matter content of the finished diets.  相似文献

Summary and Conclusion  The processing conditions has a pronounced effect on the pellet properties. Drying conditions influenced the mean size and the drug release of the pellets. Because of the shrinking of the pellets upon drying at higher temperatures, the pellets also showed increased densities. Freeze drying almost prevented shrinking and thus led to the highest drug release. With an increase in the temperature of drying, the drug release rate decreased. Both spheronization time and spheronization speed affected the shapes of pellets, and the changes in shapes then affected the pellet flow properties. Within the studied range, the circularity of the pellets was affected more by the spheronization time than by the spheronization speed. Drying conditions influenced pellet friability, which decreased with an increase in drying temperature, indicating the formation of more dense structures at higher temperatures. The same result was obtained with spheronization time. With an increase in spheronization time, the friability decreased, because of the formation of more compact masses at higher spheronization time. The effect of intraspecific contact (Contact) on egg production was examined in the massive coral Goniastrea aspera in Okinawa, subtropical Japan. The contact was non-aggressive without damaging soft tissues each other. Within Contact colonies, polyp volume, polyp fertility (%polyps with gonad), and NE/PV (number of eggs per polyp volume) were significantly smaller in marginal (Mg) polyps without direct intraspecific contact than other polyps, but no difference was found between non-marginal and Mg-Contact (marginal with direct intraspecific contact) polyps. Comparisons of non-marginal polyps (non-marginal and Mg-Contact polyps were combined in Contact colonies) between Non-Contact and Contact colonies showed that fertility and NE/PV were significantly larger in Contact colonies than in Non-Contact colonies, but polyp volume were not different significantly. Further analyses dividing colonies at Non-Contact maturation colony size (60 polyps) revealed that fertility and NE/PV were significantly larger in Contact colonies than in Non-Contact colonies only in the small colonies (<60 polyps), indicating that the intraspecific contact promoted sexual maturation at smaller colony size; one polyped Contact coral was also reproductive. The lack of correlation between polyp volume and NE/PV in the small Contact colonies, and the similarity of NE/PV in non-marginal and Mg-Contact polyps within a colony, suggest that the maturation at smaller size in Contact colonies is realized by reproductive integration of polyps at the colony level. The present results show that size-structured populations such as colonial corals may show phenotypic diversity in key demographic parameters, such as reproductive output, dependent on ecological conditions.  相似文献

SUMMARY Dickinsonia is one of the most recognizable forms in the Ediacaran fauna, but its phylogenetic position has been contentious, and it has been placed in almost every kingdom of life. Here, it is hypothesized that the affinities of Dickinsonia lie with the Placozoa (Metazoa), an understudied phylum that is widespread in tropical seas worldwide. Modern placozoans show obvious differences in size and axial organization compared with Dickinsonia, but these differences can be accounted for by the stem‐group/crown‐group distinction. The affinity with placozoans is evidenced primarily by the unique feeding mode of Dickinsonia, which is demonstrated by a series of feeding traces. These traces indicate that Dickinsonia moved over the Ediacaran matgrounds, and digested the mat using its entire lower sole. The ability of Dickinsonia to move negates an algal, fungal, or sponge affinity, while the feeding mode, external digestion with a ventral sole, rules out placement within any sponge or eumetazoan lineage. The only organisms that both move and feed in this manner are placozoans. Recent molecular phylogenetic studies have demonstrated that placozoans lie above sponges but below Eumetazoa. We hypothesize that Dickinsonia and other externally digesting Ediacaran forms are either stem‐placozoans, or a series of extinct lineages above sponges and below eumetazoans on the metazoan tree. We discuss the potential evolutionary transitions between the main metazoan feeding modes in the context of the emerging molecular phylogeny, and suggest that aspects of the sponge and placozoan feeding strategies are relicts of nonuniformitarian Proterozoic ocean conditions.  相似文献

Pellet coating is traditionally carried out using the Wurster coater. This study investigated the feasibility of pellet coating in a newly developed coater built with a unique airflow system, the Supercell™ coater (GEA Pharma Systems, UK). A full factorial design study was carried out to evaluate the influences of the spray rate of the coating dispersion, batch size of the pellet load, pellet size fraction and plenum pressure of the fluidizing air on the color coating of pellets in the Supercell™ coater. Results showed that pellets could be successfully coated using the Supercell™ coater. Higher plenum pressures and lower spray rates were found to minimize pellet agglomeration during coating. Although coating efficiencies were comparable amongst the different pellet size fractions, larger batch sizes of pellets were coated with higher efficiencies. Process optimization was carried out for each pellet size fraction and a large batch size (120 g) in combination with a high plenum pressure (1,500 mm WC) were deemed optimal. Optimal spray rates differed according to pellet size fraction and a lower spray rate was required for smaller pellets. Pellet flow patterns observed during coating were dependent on the pressure drop across the fluidized load. The effects of dissolved oxygen tension and mechanical forces on fungal morphology were both studied in the submerged fermentation of Aspergillus awamori. Pellet size, the hairy length of pellets, and the free filamentous mycelial fraction in the total biomass were found to be a function of the mechanical force intensity and to be independent of the dissolved oxygen tension provided that the dissolved oxygen tension was neither too low (5%) nor too high (330%). When the dissolved oxygen concentration was close to the saturation concentration corresponding to pure oxygen gas, A. awamori formed denser pellets and the free filamentous mycelial fraction was almost zero for a power input of about 1 W/kg. In the case of very low dissolved oxygen tension, the pellets were rather weak and fluffy so that they showed a very different appearance. The amount of biomass per pellet surface area appeared to be affected only by the dissolved oxygen tension and was proportional to the average dissolved oxygen tension to the power of 0.33. From this it was concluded that molecular diffusion was the dominant mechanism for oxygen transfer in the pellets and that convection and turbulent flow in the pellets were negligible in submerged fermentations. The biomass per wet pellet volume increased with the dissolved oxygen tension and decreased with the size of the pellets. This means that the smaller pellets formed under a higher dissolved oxygen tension had a higher intrinsic strength. Correspondingly, the porosity of the pellets was a function of the dissolved oxygen tension and the size of pellets. Within the studied range, the void fraction in the pellets was high and always much more than 50%.  相似文献

The distribution and absorption of ingested protein was characterized within a colony of Podocoryna carnea when a single polyp was fed. Observations were conducted at multiple spatial and temporal scales at three different stages of colony ontogeny with an artificial food item containing Texas Red conjugated albumin. Food pellets were digested and all tracer absorbed by digestive cells within the first 2–3 hours post-feeding. The preponderance of the label was located in the fed polyp and in a transport-induced diffusion pattern surrounding the fed polyp. After 6 hours post-feeding particulates re-appeared in the gastrovascular system and their absorption increased the area over which the nutrients were distributed, albeit still in a pattern that was centered on the fed polyp. At later intervals, tracer became concentrated in some stolon tips, but not in others, despite the proximity of these stolons either to the fed polyp or to adjacent stolons receiving nutrients. Distribution and absorption of nutrients is sequentially diffusive and directional.  相似文献
