Based on plasma cortisol concentrations it is widely accepted that transport is stressful to horses. So far, cortisol release during transport has not been evaluated in depth by non-invasive techniques such as analysis of salivary cortisol and faecal cortisol metabolites. Transport also causes changes in heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV). In this study, salivary cortisol, faecal cortisol metabolites, heart rate and HRV in horses transported by road for short (one and 3.5 h) and medium duration (8 h) were determined. With the onset of transport, salivary cortisol increased immediately but highest concentrations were measured towards the end of transport (4.1 ± 1.6, 4.5 ± 2.6, 6.5 ± 1.8 ng/ml in horses transported for one, 3.5 and 8 h, respectively). Faecal cortisol metabolite concentrations did not change during transport, but 1 day after transport for 3.5 and 8 h had increased significantly (p < 0.01), reflecting intestinal passage time. Compared to salivary cortisol, changes in faecal cortisol metabolites were less pronounced. Heart rate increased and beat-to-beat (RR) interval decreased (p < 0.05) with the onset of transport. Standard deviation of heart rate increased while root mean square of successive RR differences (RMSSD) decreased in horses transported for 3.5 (from 74 ± 5 to 45 ± 6 ms) and 8 h (from 89.7 ± 7 to 59 ± 7 ms), indicating a reduction in vagal tone. In conclusion, transport of horses over short and medium distances leads to increased cortisol release and changes in heart rate and HRV indicative of stress. The degree of these changes is related to the duration of transport. Salivary cortisol is a sensitive parameter to detect transient changes in cortisol release.  相似文献

The mechanisms leading to parturition in the horse in many aspects differ from those in other species. Pregnancy is maintained not by progesterone but by 5α-pregnanes and the progestin precursor pregnenolone originates from the fetus. As parturition approaches, the fetal adrenal switches from pregnenolone to cortisol synthesis but it is not known whether cortisol crosses the placenta. We hypothesized that in parallel to fetal cortisol release, cortisol in the maternal circulation increases before foaling and this increase can be determined in both saliva and plasma. In addition, maternal, fetal and neonatal heart rate and heart rate variability were measured. In 25 pregnant mares, saliva for cortisol analysis was collected 4 times daily from 15 days before to 5 days after foaling. In 13 mares, in addition, fetomaternal electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings were made and blood samples for progestin and cortisol analysis were collected once daily. Heart rate (HR) was recorded until 5 days after foaling. The heart rate variability (HRV) variables standard deviation of the beat-to-beat (RR) interval (SDRR) and root mean square of successive RR differences (RMSSD) were calculated. From Days 15 to 4 before parturition, progestin concentration increased (peak 267 ± 42 ng/mL) and decreased thereafter (P < 0.05, day of foaling 113 ± 18 ng/mL). A prepartum increase in maternal cortisol concentrations was evident in blood (P < 0.05) and saliva (P < 0.05) and paralleled the decrease in progestin concentrations. In mares, HR remained constant during the last days of pregnancy but decreased within one day after parturition (P < 0.05) while maternal HRV did not change. In the fetus and neonate, HR increased from before to after birth (P < 0.05) indicating increasing demands on the cardiovascular system with adaptation to extrauterine life.  相似文献

Heart rate is an important parameter of fetal well-being. We have analyzed fetal heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) by fetomaternal electrocardiography (ECG) in the horse (Equus caballus) from midpregnancy to foaling. It was the aim of the study to detect changes in the regulation of fetal cardiac activity over time and to establish normal values in undisturbed pregnancies. A total of 22 mares were available for the study. Fetomaternal electrocardiography was a reliable technique to detect cardiac signals in fetuses between Day 173 of gestation and foaling. Fetal HR decreased from 115 ± 4 beats/min (Days 170 to 240 of gestation) to 83 ± 3 beats/min (Day 320) to 79 ± 1 beats/min (1 d before foaling; P < 0.001). Mean beat to beat (RR) interval and standard deviation of the RR interval (SDRR) increased (P < 0.001). Gestational age thus affects RR interval and HR in the equine fetus. From Days 270 to 340 of gestation, SDRR increased from 11.4 ± 1.3 msec on Day 270 to 27.8 ± 3.6 msec on Day 340 (P < 0.05), and the root mean square of successive RR differences (RMSSD) tended to increase (P = 0.07), indicating maturation of the fetal autonomous nervous system. For the last 10 d before foaling, fetal HR and HRV remained constant and did not allow predicting the onset of parturition in the horse. Only during the last 30 min before the foal was born, in 4 of 5 fetuses, HR decreased and RR interval increased. Accelerations and decelerations in HR were detectable at all times, but neither their number nor duration changed over time.  相似文献

The effect of exercise training on heart rate variability (HRV) and improvements in peak oxygen consumption ( peak) was examined in sedentary middle-aged men. The HRV and absolute and relative peak of training (n = 19) and control (n = 15) subjects were assessed before and after a 24-session moderate intensity exercise training programme. Results indicated that with exercise training there was a significantly increased absolute and relative peak (P < 0.005) for the training group (12% and 11% respectively) with no increase for the control group. The training group also displayed a significant reduction in resting heart rate; however, HRV remained unchanged. The trained subjects were further categorized into high (n = 5) and low (n = 5) HRV groups and changes in peak were compared. Improvements in both absolute and relative peak were significantly greater (P > 0.005) in the high HRV group (17% and 20% respectively) compared to the low HRV group (6% and 1% respectively). The groups did not differ in mean age, pretraining oxygen consumption, or resting heart rate. These results would seem to suggest that a short aerobic training programme does not alter HRV in middle-aged men. Individual differences in HRV, however, may be associated with peak response to aerobic training.  相似文献

Muscarinic receptor-mediated cardiac parasympathetic activity is essential for regulating heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV). It has not been clear which G(i)/G(o) protein is responsible for these effects. We addressed this question using knockout mice that lack G protein alpha(i2), alpha(i3), or alpha(o) specifically. Unlike previously reported, our alpha(o)-null mice had significantly more survivors with normal life span. Isolated hearts from alpha(o)-null mice demonstrated much less sensitivity to the negative chronotropic effects of the muscarinic agonist carbachol to lower heart rate at baseline and a more profound effect under the stimulation of the beta-adrenergic agonist isoproterenol. In the presence of parasympathetic activation indirectly produced by methoxamine, an alpha(1)-adrenergic agonist, alpha(o)-null mice showed markedly decreased HRV compared with wild-type control mice. These differences in heart rate and HRV were not observed in alpha(i2)-null or alpha(i3)-null mice. Our findings establish an essential role for alpha(o) G protein in the anti-adrenergic effect of carbachol on heart rate regulation.  相似文献

The effects of endurance training on endurance performance characteristics and cardiac autonomic modulation during night sleep were investigated during two 4-week training periods. After the first 4-week training period (3 x 40 min per week, at 75% of HRR) the subjects were divided into HIGH group (n = 7), who performed three high-intensity endurance training sessions per week; and CONTROL group (n = 8) who did not change their training. An incremental treadmill test was performed before and after the two 4-week training periods. Furthermore, nocturnal RR-intervals were recorded after each training day. In the second 4-week training period HIGH group increased their VO2max (P = 0.005) more than CONTROL group. At the same time, nocturnal HR decreased (P = 0.039) and high-frequency power (HFP) increased (P = 0.003) in HIGH group while no changes were observed in CONTROL group. Furthermore, a correlation was observed between the changes in nocturnal HFP and changes in VO2max during the second 4-week training period (r = 0.90, P < 0.001). The present study showed that the increased HFP is related to improved VO2max in sedentary subjects suggesting that nocturnal HFP can provide a useful method in monitoring individual responses to endurance training.  相似文献

One of the most promising non-invasive markers of the activity of the autonomic nervous system is heart rate variability (HRV). HRV analysis toolkits often provide spectral analysis techniques using the Fourier transform, which assumes that the heart rate series is stationary. To overcome this issue, the Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) is often used. However, the wavelet transform is thought to be a more suitable tool for analyzing non-stationary signals than the STFT. Given the lack of support for wavelet-based analysis in HRV toolkits, such analysis must be implemented by the researcher. This has made this technique underutilized. This paper presents a new algorithm to perform HRV power spectrum analysis based on the Maximal Overlap Discrete Wavelet Packet Transform (MODWPT). The algorithm calculates the power in any spectral band with a given tolerance for the band's boundaries. The MODWPT decomposition tree is pruned to avoid calculating unnecessary wavelet coefficients, thereby optimizing execution time. The center of energy shift correction is applied to achieve optimum alignment of the wavelet coefficients. This algorithm has been implemented in RHRV, an open-source package for HRV analysis. To the best of our knowledge, RHRV is the first HRV toolkit with support for wavelet-based spectral analysis.  相似文献

This study evaluates and compares the effects of strength and endurance training on motor unit discharge rate variability and force steadiness of knee extensor muscles. Thirty sedentary healthy men (age, 26.0 ± 3.8 yrs) were randomly assigned to strength training, endurance training or a control group. Conventional endurance and strength training was performed 3 days per week, over a period of 6 weeks. Maximum voluntary contraction (MVC), time to task failure (at 30% MVC), coefficient of variation (CoV) of force and of the discharges rates of motor units from the vastus medialis obliquus and vastus lateralis were determined as subjects performed 20% and 30% MVC knee extension contractions before and after training. CoV of motor unit discharges rates was significantly reduced for both muscles following strength training (P < 0.001), but did not change in the endurance (P = 0.875) or control group (P = 0.995). CoV of force was reduced after the strength training intervention only (P < 0.01). Strength training, but not endurance training, reduces motor unit discharge rate variability and enhances force steadiness of the knee extensors. These results provide new insights into the neuromuscular adaptations that occur with different training methods.  相似文献

An alternative technique for sleep stages classification based on heart rate variability (HRV) was presented in this paper. The simple subject specific scheme and a more practical subject independent scheme were designed to classify wake, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM (NREM) sleep. 41 HRV features extracted from RR sequence of 45 healthy subjects were trained and tested through random forest (RF) method. Among the features, 25 were newly proposed or applied to sleep study for the first time. For the subject independent classifier, all features were normalized with our developed fractile values based method. Besides, the importance of each feature for sleep staging was also assessed by RF and the appropriate number of features was explored. For the subject specific classifier, a mean accuracy of 88.67% with Cohen's kappa statistic κ of 0.7393 was achieved. While the accuracy and κ dropped to 72.58% and 0.4627, respectively when the subject independent classifier was considered. Some new proposed HRV features even performed more effectively than the conventional ones. The proposed method could be used as an alternative or aiding technique for rough and convenient sleep stages classification.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the influence of daytime exercise on heart rate during sleep. Nine, untrained male college students volunteered to participate. They cycled at 75% maximum oxygen uptake, ( O2max) 30 min·day–1 for 12 weeks. The exercise duration was increased by 5 min every 4 weeks from 30 to 40 min per session. Post-training O2max[mean (SE): 48.9 (1.7) ml · kg–1 · min–1] values were significantly (P<0.01) higher than pre-training [45.5 (1.8) ml-kg–1·min–1] values. Before and after training, sleeping heart rate was assessed on two separate nights. Data were obtained during a night following 30 min of daytime cycling at 75 (6) % O2maxand on a night in which no daytime exercise was performed. A three-way repeated measures ANOVA [training status (pre-/post-training) × activity (exercise day/nonexercise day) × sleep time (18 epochs of 20 min each)] revealed a significant main effect for sleep time (P < 0.001) as well as a sleep time × training status interaction (P<0.02). No significant difference in sleeping heart rate was noted when exercise and non-exercise days were compared both before and after training. It is concluded that endurance training in these young adult men: (1) hastens the achievement of baseline heart rate during sleep, and (2) does not moderate the relationship between an acute bout of daytime exercise and sleeping heart rate.  相似文献

Purpose: In recent years, the measurement of heart rate variability (HRV) has gained ground even outside research settings in everyday clinical and outpatient practice and in health promotion. Methods: Using the search terms “heart rate variability”, “hrv” and “circadian”, a systematic review was carried out in the PubMed database to find original work that analysed the course of HRV parameters over a 24-h period. Results: A total of 26 original studies were found. Almost all the studies detected a circadian rhythm for the HRV parameters analysed. HRV increased during the night in particular and a nighttime peak during the second half of the night was identified. Conclusions: HRV follows a circadian rhythm. But until today, there isn′t any possibility to make quantitative statements about changes over the course of the day for planning short-term measurements. More qualitative studies must be carried in order to close this knowledge gaps.  相似文献

This paper presents a novel method for the analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) during exercise stress testing enhanced with respiratory information. The instantaneous frequency and power of the low frequency (LF) and high frequency (HF) bands of the HRV are estimated by parametric decomposition of the instantaneous autocorrelation function (ACF) as a sum of damped sinusoids. The instantaneous ACF is first windowed and filtered to reduce the cross terms. The inclusion of respiratory information is proposed at different stages of the analysis, namely, the design of the filter applied to the instantaneous ACF, the parametric decomposition, and the definition of a dynamic HF band. The performance of the method is evaluated on simulated data as well as on a stress testing database. The simulation results show that the inclusion of respiratory information reduces the estimation error of the amplitude of the HF component from 3.5% to 2.4% in mean and related SD from 3.0% to 1.7% when a tuned time smoothing window is used at an SNR of 15 dB. Results from the stress testing database show that information on respiratory frequency produces HF power estimates which closely resemble those from the simulations which exhibited lower SD. The mean SD of these estimates with respect to their mean trends is reduced by 84% (from 0.74×10−3 s−2 to 0.12×10−3 s−2). The analysis of HRV in the stress testing database reveals a significant decrease in the power of both the LF and HF components around peak stress.

Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects regulatory processes of the cardiovascular system and reveals fractal characteristics. In this paper we investigated standard HRV parameters and scaling characteristics in ten athletes before, during, and after a 2-week training camp to assess the effects of short-term overtraining on cardiovascular control. High-resolution ECGs were recorded over 30 min under resting conditions 1 week before the training camp, after 1 week of training in the camp, and after 3-4 days of recovery. Standard HRV analysis was performed according to Task Force recommendations. Scaling characteristics were assessed, applying detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). Standard HRV analysis showed significant changes in meanNN and rmssd during the training camp. DFA revealed three distinct regions of scale-invariance and significant alterations during the training camp. In conclusion, HRV might be used to monitor the training state in athletes.  相似文献

Mounted police horses have to cope with challenging, unpredictable situations when on duty and it is essential to gain insight into how these horses handle stress to warrant their welfare. The aim of the study was to evaluate physiological and behavioral responses of 12 (six experienced and six inexperienced) police horses during police training. Horses were evaluated during four test settings at three time points over a 7-week period: outdoor track test, street track test, indoor arena test and smoke machine test. Heart rate (HR; beats/min), HR variability (HRV; root means square of successive differences; ms), behavior score (BS; scores 0 to 5) and standard police performance score (PPS; scores 1 to 0) were obtained per test. All data were statistically evaluated using a linear mixed model (Akaike's Information criterium; t > 2.00) or logistic regression (P < 0.05). HR of horses was increased at indoor arena test (98 ± 26) and smoke machine test (107 ± 25) compared with outdoor track (80 ± 12, t = 2.83 and t = 3.91, respectively) and street track tests (81 ± 14, t = 2.48 and t = 3.52, respectively). HRV of horses at the indoor arena test (42.4 ± 50.2) was significantly lower compared with street track test (85.7 ± 94.3 and t = 2.78). BS did not show significant differences between tests and HR of horses was not always correlated with the observed moderate behavioral responses. HR, HRV, PPS and BS did not differ between repetition of tests and there were no significant differences in any of the four tests between experienced and inexperienced horses. No habituation occurred during the test weeks, and experience as a police horse does not seem to be a key factor in how these horses handle stress. All horses showed only modest behavioral responses, and HR may provide complimentary information for individual evaluation and welfare assessment of these horses. Overall, little evidence of stress was observed during these police training tests. As three of these tests (excluding the indoor arena test) reflect normal police work, it is suggested that this kind of police work is not significantly stressful for horses and will have no negative impact on the horse's welfare.  相似文献

The human heartbeat is one of the important examples of complex physiologic fluctuations. For the first time in this study higher order spectra of heart rate signals during meditation have explored. Specifically, the aim of this study was to analysis and compares the contribution of quadratic phase coupling of human heart rate variability during two forms of meditation: (1) Chinese Chi (or Qigong) meditation and (2) Kundalini Yoga meditation. For this purpose, Bispectrum was estimated by using biased, parametric and the direct (FFT) method. The results show that the mean Bispectrum magnitude of heart rate signals increased during Kundalini Yoga meditation, but it decreased significantly during Chi meditation. However, in both meditation techniques phase-coupled harmonics are shifted to the higher frequencies during meditation. In addition, it has shown that not only there are significant differences between rest and meditation states, but also heart rate patterns appear to be influenced by different types of meditation.  相似文献

Salivary biomarkers could be useful to evaluate stress, fitness level, and skeletal muscle damage associated to exercise in horses in an easy and non-painful way. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate if cortisol in saliva (sCor), salivary alpha-amylase (sAMY) and butyrylcholinesterase (sBChE) and lactate (sLA) and creatine kinase (sCK) in saliva of horses can show changes during a standardized exercise test, and if they are related to heart rate variability (HRV) parameters related to sympathetic and parasympathetic tone, fitness level or skeletal muscle damage. For this purpose, ten endurance horses were submitted to a standardized exercise test in field conditions. Saliva and blood were obtained at basal time (TB), after the seven bouts of velocity (T + 01 to T + 07), and 5, 15, 30, and 45 min later (T + 5, T + 15, T + 30, and T + 45). Five endurance horses in resting condition (control group) were also enrolled. HRV and fitness level parameters, and plasma CK as a marker of muscle damage were also evaluated. Salivaryalpha-amylase increased at T + 30 (P = 0.03), sBChE at T + 5 (P = 008), and sCK at T + 07 (P = 0.009) after the exercise test, with significant differences between the exercise and control groups’ results. The sCor did not show significant changes during the exercise test in the exercise group but higher concentration compared to the control horses (P < 0.001) were observed. sCor, sAMY, sBChE, and sCK showed a positive correlation (r values between 0.47 and 0.64) with the sympathetic tone and a negative correlation (r values between −0.37 and −0.56) with the parasympathetic tone. In conclusion, sAMY, sBChE, and sCK showed significant increases in ten endurance horses after an increasing intensity velocity exercise. Values of sCor, sAMY, sBChE, and sCK were associated with HRV, which is used to evaluate stress, and therefore, they could be potentially used to assess the exercise-related stress after a physical effort.  相似文献
