Anaplasma ovis was experimentally transmitted from sheep to pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana) and back to sheep. Anaplasma ovis was recovered in splenectomized sheep, from two of three spleen-intact pronghorns following their inoculation with blood from known A. ovis carrier sheep. These two pronghorns exhibited a 0.5% or higher A. ovis parasitemia within 48 days after exposure, and an anaplasmosis-positive serological response 91 days after exposure. Clinical signs of illness were not observed. Blood from the infected pronghorns produced disease in four splenectomized sheep.  相似文献

Wildlife reservoir species and genetic diversity of Anaplasma ovis (Rickettsiales: Anaplasmataceae) have been poorly characterized. Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), captured in Montana from December 2004 to January 2005, were tested for antibodies to Anaplasma spp.; the presence of A. ovis was determined by the characterization of major surface protein msp4 sequences. Anaplasma antibodies were detected in 25/180 (14%) sampled bighorn sheep and A. ovis msp4 sequences were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequenced from 9/23 (39%) of seropositive animals. All animals were negative by PCR for the related pathogens, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Anaplasma marginale. All msp4 sequences identified in the bighorn sheep were identical and corresponded to a single A. ovis genotype that was identical to a sheep isolate reported previously from Idaho. The finding of a single genotype of A. ovis in this wild herd of bighorn sheep was in contrast to the genetic diversity reported for A. marginale in cattle herds in the western United States and worldwide. These results demonstrated that bighorn sheep may be a wildlife reservoir of A. ovis in Montana.  相似文献

Sera from eighteen control sheep supposed to be free from parasitism by Oestrus ovis Linnaeus, 1761, and from 100 sheep raised in an enzootic area of O.ovis infestations were tested to detect anti-Oestrus antibodies by double immunodiffusion (DD) and indirect haemagglutination (IH) tests with somatic crude antigens from first (L1), second (L2) and third (L3) instar of O.ovis larvae. At necropsy, eighty-eight out of 100 sheep from the O.ovis infested area were found to be parasitized while the eighteen control ovines did not show Oestrus larvae. Examination of the sera from the parasitized sheep by DD showed positive results of 42% for L1, 59% for L2 and 18% for L3. Screening the sera with IH gave sensitivities of 100% for L1, 100% for L2 and 97.7% for L3. Sheep, naturally parasitized by gastrointestinal nematodes, presented no cross immune reactions in DD tests with the three larval stages of O.ovis or with L2 larvae in IH tests.  相似文献

The sheep biting louse ( Bovicola ovis ) feeds superficially on the skin of sheep but appears to stimulate an immune response. In this study we examined the association between louse infestation and serum and skin surface antibodies. Louse numbers were monitored on experimentally infested Polypay and Columbia ewes for two years and on their lambs in the second year. Serum and skin wash samples were tested for antibodies to soluble extracts of B. ovis , Stomoxys calcitrans and Musca autumnali s by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In addition, the effects of skin wash extracts on B. ovis were examined in vitro .
The titre of anti- B. ovis antibodies in the serum did not differ significantly between infested and naive ewes. However, there was an increase in serum antibody titre which coincided with periods of high louse density in ewes with high louse counts. Infested lambs had higher serum antibody levels than naive lambs. Substantial cross reactivity was evident among extracts of the different insects.
Densities of lice on the ewes during population decline were negatively related to the titre of skin surface antibodies. Skin washings collected from sheep during B. ovis population decline reduced the number of louse progeny when incorporated into louse diet. These results indicate that B. ovis stimulates an immune response in sheep and suggest that compounds on the skin surface may play a role in the regulation of louse populations.  相似文献

Brucella ovis was isolated for the first time in Italy in 1994 from the genital organs of two domestic rams. In subsequent years bacteriologic and serologic investigations demonstrated an increasing distribution of this disease in domestic sheep. Mouflon (Ovis musimon) occur in several hilly and mountainous areas of Italy where they can potentially contact domestic sheep. To determine if this species may have a role in the epidemiology of B. ovis, four male and four female mouflon, serologically negative for B. ovis and other Brucella spp., were infected intra-conjunctivally with B. ovis strain BG1/94. Physical examinations, including collection of blood samples for serology and bacteriology, were performed weekly. The animals were euthanized 8 mo postinoculation (p.i.). Samples of retropharyngeal, parotid, and iliac lymph nodes; bone marrow; kidneys; spleen; epididymis; testicle; bulbourethral glands; seminal vesicles; uterus; and oviducts were collected from each animal as appropriate for histopathology and bacteriology. At the time of euthanasia none of the animals exhibited obvious clinical signs of brucellosis. The animals seroconverted 2 wk p.i. and became seronegative 24 wk p.i. Bacterial cultures, including hemocultures, were negative. No lesions due to B. ovis infection were revealed by histologic examinations. Brucella ovis probably did not infect mouflon and this wild sheep is not likely to play a role in the epidemiology of contagious epididymitis caused by B. ovis.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of Psoroptes spp. mites on rabbits and sheep   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A scanning electron microscope (SEM) study of the mouthparts of Psoroptes cuniculi from rabbits and P. ovis from sheep established that they are identical in morphology and are adapted for surface feeding rather than piercing the epidermis. Haemoglobin was found in both P. cuniculi and P. ovis on rabbits but not in P. ovis on sheep and it is concluded that the haemoglobin is derived from small haemorrhages on the surface of inflamed rabbit skin. This inflammation is caused by the deposition of antigenic material on the skin which is abraded by the mite mouthparts. The mites feed on the resulting exudate and on other surface material. An immunofluorescent assay revealed that the 2 mite species are antigenically similar.  相似文献

Mites are an important group of arthropod pests affecting crops, animals and humans. Despite this, detailed physiological studies on these organisms remain sparse due largely to their small size. Unifying models are required to draw together the diverse information from studies on different groups and species. This paper describes a model for digestion in the parasitic mite, Psoroptes ovis, the causative agent of psoroptic mange or sheep scab disease. The limited information about this species is supplemented with data from other acarines, especially house dust mites and ticks. We review the range of enzymes and allergens found in mites and consider their possible roles in digestion in mites, generally and in particular, P. ovis. Histological studies, enzyme biochemistry and molecular biology and experimental evidence suggest that P. ovis utilises a digestive system reliant upon acid peptidases functioning in a largely intracellular environment. The actions of the digestive enzymes are supplemented by the involvement of bacteria as potential direct and indirect sources of nutrition. It is possible that some extra-corporeal digestion also takes place. The interaction of bacteria and digestive enzymes on the skin surface of the sheep may be responsible for the excessive pathological reactions evident in clinical sheep scab.  相似文献

OEstrosis is a very common myiasis of sheep and goats in mediterranean and tropical countries. Goats are suitable hosts for OEstrus ovis but the parasitic burden remain lower than in sheep. Cellular responses (mucous and serous mast cells, eosinophis and globules leucocytes) were measured in 30 infected and 30 non infected sheep and in 23 infected and 24 non infected goats. The presence of OEstrus ovis larvae led to an important inflammatory response in sheep and in goats as well. Furthermore, the intensity of the cellular response correlated with the larva burden, specially with globules leucocytes and eosinophils. Nevertheless, huge differences occurred between sheep and goats responses even in similar larval burden range. Infected sheep showed larger counts of mucous mast cells than goats, the differences were smaller in serous mast cells and eosinophils and no difference was detected in globules leucocytes (intraepithelial mast cells) counts between the two hosts species. These results were compared with those obtained in gastro-intestinal strongyles infections.  相似文献

The kinetics of specific antibodies of the blood serum of sheep experimentally infested with 80, 160 and 1000 specimens of Oestrus ovis larvae was examined. The affinity pure serum IgG and the immunoferment analysis (ELISA) were used for qualitative estimation of specific antibodies. It has been shown that the level of specific antibodies correlates with the larval biomass and is connected with ontogenesis of this parasite. The younger animals, which were infested for the first time, are characterized by more intensive production of specific IgG than adult reinfested ones. The ways of immunity response formation in animals infested with Oestrus ovis larvae are considered.  相似文献

Macedonia is an endemic region of cattle as well as of sheep and goat piroplasmosis In cattle, Theileria orientalis (=T. buffeli?), the agent of Eurasian benign theileriosis, is the most common and widespread piroplasm species. T. annulata, the agent of tropical theileriosis, seems to be rare and limited to few foci, but causes very severe clinical cases, especially in imported pure-bred or cross-bred animals. Babesia bovis and B. bigemina are present in several localities, and often coexist. Cattle babesiosis cases are due to both piroplasms, but B. bovis is considered responsible for the severe and acute clinical cases. Ovine and caprine babesiosis is due to B. ovis and mainly affected imported animals as well as indigenous animals which have been transported from localities where the infection was absent. B. ovis is extremely widespread in both sheep and goats. During the last decades, no clinical cases of small ruminant theileriosis have been registered in this region. However, T. ovis, a non-pathogenic theileria, is common in sheep, but not in goats. Anaplasma ovis, a protobacterium of small ruminants, is also present in the region.  相似文献

Alternatives to chemicals for controlling parasites are required to minimise problems from resistance, residues in animal products and occupational exposure. Utilisation of host response to parasites through selection of resistant types or vaccination is an appealing option. To date most studies have been with haematophagous or invasive parasites which directly contact elements of the host immune system. Sheep lice (Bovicola ovis) feed superficially on the skin of sheep ingesting lipid, scurf, bacteria and loose stratum corneum squames. Evidence is presented that despite their surface feeding habit Bovicola ovis stimulate an immune response in sheep and that this response may play a part in regulating the size of louse populations.  相似文献

Slaughterhouse surveys to determine the prevalence and intensity of larval Oestrus ovis Linnaeus (Diptera: Oestridae) in sheep, were conducted monthly for 1 year in Konya, Turkey. A total of 624 sheep, selected at random, were examined and 59% were found to be infested by O. ovis. A total of 8801 larvae were collected, of which 68.9% were first-stage, 19.1% second-stage and 12% third-stage larvae. All three larval stadia were seen in each month of the year. The larval intensity for infected sheep was 23.9, with 16.48 L(1), 4.55 L(2) and 2.87 L(3). The monthly prevalence ranged from 34.6% in January to 76.9% in October. The largest number of larvae (180) was obtained from a sheep in August (122 L(1), 52 L(2) and 6 L(3)). The infestation rate was higher in 4 - 6-year-old sheep, at 72.6%. The infestation rates were 64.4% in female and 47.5% in male sheep.  相似文献

Maedi Visna Virus (MVV) is the etiological agent of a systemic disease of sheep, which causes lesions in lungs, the central nervous system, joints, and mammary glands. It has been speculated that the association with Brucella ovis may lead to the venereal shedding of the virus. In this work, samples of epididymis from ten rams positive for MVV and infected experimentally with Brucella ovis, were subjected to liquid-phase PCR, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ PCR tests, aimed at identifying the pathogens in a tissue context. IHC was carried out using a monoclonal antibody raised against p28 MVV protein and a polyclonal antibody to B. ovis. Liquid phase- and in situ PCR were designed to amplify a portion of MVV proviral DNA Pol sequence. In the animals showing B. ovis-related histopathological changes, IHC clearly demonstrated a positivity for B. ovis and MVV in interstitial and epithelial ductal cells. In situ PCR assessed the presence of MVV proviral DNA in macrophages and elements inside the epithelium. The unaffected and reagent control samples constantly gave negative results. Taken together, these data demonstrate that MVV may affect ovine epididymis, apparently taking advantage of the concurrent infection by B. ovis. The tropism of MVV for the epididymal epithelial cells, may be responsible for its excretion with the semen.  相似文献

Blood samples from 710 sheep raised in 20 different farms were examined for Brucella ovis antibodies. Thirty samples were positive with complement fixation, 35 samples with precipitation, and 58 samples with both tests. It has been concluded that the gel precipitation technique is adequate for screening but for individual testing both methods should be used simultaneously.  相似文献

One case of human nasal myiasis caused by second and third instar larvae of Oestrus ovis was observed in Lille (North France). Oestrosis is a common myiasis of sheep and goats in Mediterranean and Tropical countries. The authors examine the oestrosis pathogenesis in the usual host (sheep) or in humans, and analyse the epidemiology, the symptomatology and the treatment of human oestrosis.  相似文献

An experimental Anaplasma marginale infection was induced in a splenectomized mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) which persisted subclinically at least 376 days as detected by subinoculation into susceptible cattle. Anaplasma ovis was experimentally transmitted from sheep to a splenectomized and a spleen-intact mule deer, and back to sheep. The pathogenesis in deer was very similar to that seen in sheep using ovine blood inoculations.  相似文献

Human infection with the sheep nasal botfly Oestrus ovis is sporadic and is often the consequence of an accidental deposit of the larvae by an adult botfly in the eye. This infestation results in external ophthalmomyiasis that, although a very rare condition, is more common among people living close to farming communities. We report three cases of O. ovis infestation which occurred in Italy in a limited area of La Spezia province (Le Cinque Terre), Italy during summer 2004. None of the patients had contact with wild or farm animals.  相似文献
