Accuracy in estimating occupancy of a threatened species is important for conservation but false absences bias many monitoring programs. Imperfect detection is especially relevant to surveys of rare wetland fishes which are often small-bodied and cryptic. Many factors influence probability of detection, including fish size and abundance, habitat characteristics and sampling devices. Imperfect detection can be addressed by accounting for probability of detection when estimating occupancy by modelling detection/non-detection data collected in replicate surveys. Three ecological specialists were once common in habitats associated with Lake Alexandrina at the terminus of the Murray–Darling Basin, Australia. The threatened Murray Hardyhead (Craterocephalus fluviatilis), Southern Pygmy Perch (Nannoperca australis) and Yarra Pygmy Perch (N. obscura) are now rare in the region following population collapses during a prolonged drought, and ongoing monitoring aims to assess their statuses for management purposes. This study compares probability of detection of the rare wetland fishes and cohabiting species during 2 years of multi-species monitoring using contrasting sampling devices (fyke and seine). The findings suggest large variations in estimated probability of detection can occur between devices for Murray Hardyhead and Southern Pygmy Perch. Yarra Pygmy Perch was undetected during the study. Overall, the findings show multi-species monitoring programs using a single sampling device may wrongly estimate the occupancy of a target fish. By accounting for imperfect detection, multi-species monitoring programs will improve inferences regarding population status, recovery and habitat quality of fishes to more accurately inform wetland management.  相似文献

Invasive plants that displace native floral communities can cause changes to associated invertebrate species assemblages. Using a mini‐review of the literature and our own data we add to the still considerable debate about the most effective methods for testing community‐level impacts by invasive species. In endangered saltmarshes of southeast Australia, the non‐native rush Juncus acutus L. is displacing its native congener J. kraussii Hochst., with concurrent changes to floral and faunal assemblages. In two coastal saltmarshes, we tested the hypothesis that the ability to detect differences in the invertebrate assemblage associated with these congeneric rushes depends on the microhabitat of the plant sampled. We used three sampling methods, each targeting specific microhabitats: sweep netting of the plant stems, vacuum sampling of the plant tussock, and vacuum sampling of the ground directly below the plants. Over 3800 individuals and 92 morphospecies were collected across four main taxa: gastropods, crustaceans, hexapods and arachnids. Detection of differences in invertebrate density, richness and composition associated with native compared with non‐native rushes was dependent on the microhabitat sampled and these differences were spatially variable. For example, at one saltmarsh the stems and tussock of J. acutus had a lower density and richness of total invertebrates and hexapods than those of the native J. kraussii. In contrast, crustaceans on the ground were in greater abundance below J. acutus than J. kraussii. This study demonstrates that on occasions where overall differences in the assemblage are not detected between species, differences may become apparent when targeting different microhabitats of the plant. In addition, separately targeting multiple microhabitats likely leads to a greater probability of detecting impacts of invasion. Comparing the invertebrate assemblage without differentiating between or sampling an array of microhabitats can fail to determine the impact of invasive species. These results highlight that a combination of methods targeting different microhabitats is important for detecting differences within the invertebrate community, even for phylogenetically related species.  相似文献

Although the ecosystem engineering concept is well established in ecology, cases of joint engineering by multiple species at large scales remain rare. Here, we combine observational studies and exclosure experiments to investigate how co‐occurring greater flamingos Phoenicopterus roseus and fiddler crabs Uca tangeri promote their own and each other's food availability by creating a spatially complex mosaic of depressions (bowls, gullies) and hummocks (plateaus, mounds) in the intertidal zone. This results in a mosaic of microhabitats with different tidal inundation regimes. These microhabitats are spatially organized with labyrinth‐like patterns in the high intertidal zone and spotted patterns in the lower intertidal, both of which likely arise from biophysical interactions between these organisms and hydrodynamic forces. We show that the resulting spatial complexity is vital for biofilm production. The depression microhabitats were wetter and richer in organic matter and biofilms compared with hummocks. Excluding flamingos and crabs resulted in an increase in biofilm biomass over the shorter term (six months), but a decrease over the longer term (after one year). Moreover, our results strongly suggest that these biogeomorphological microhabitats in the mosaics were maintained by the feeding activities of flamingos and to a lesser extent crabs. During a period of flamingo exclusion, all the spotted patterns filled up with sediment, while the exclusion of crabs led to gradual sediment accumulation in the labyrinth‐like patterns. Collectively, these findings provide empirical evidence for large‐scale joint promotion of food availability by multiple taxa in a marine ecosystem.  相似文献

Reliable information about population density and trends is essential for making valid inferences regarding conservation management. The suitability of point counts using distance sampling was examined as a means of monitoring a population of kaka (Nestor meridionalis septentrionalis), a large forest-dwelling parrot, inhabiting the Waipapa Ecological Area in the central North Island of New?Zealand. Counts were conducted on 13 occasions between 2000 and 2007. The sampling design was tailored to maximise the detectability of kaka and to minimise violations of the four most important assumptions of distance sampling. Location errors and subsequent distance estimation errors were most likely to bias density estimates despite our attempts to minimise failures of this assumption. Densities estimated from counts conducted in October were similar between 2000 and 2007 (approximately 0.5 kaka ha-1) with no evidence of either a positive or negative trend. Densities derived from counts in February or March were more erratic and seemed to reflect variation in the frequency and success of the preceding breeding season. Given the frequency of kaka breeding, the pest control regime during the study period, and our attempts to minimise violations of distance sampling assumptions, we are confident that the reported trends in density are realistic. Although distance sampling was found to give reliable density estimates of kaka at Waipapa, this may not be the case at other sites, particularly where kaka density is low, location error is high, forest structure or topography are more complex, or surveys of kaka are made part of more extensive multi-species surveys.  相似文献

This study uses Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) technology to describe the habitat use patterns of the small, benthic redfin bully (Gobiomorphus huttoni). A 100-m reach of small upland stream in Manawatu, New Zealand was mapped to scale and inventoried for microhabitat variables. Flow velocity, depth, surface turbulence, substrate size and interstitial refuge space availability were measured in 0.25-m2 quadrats throughout the reach. A total of 67 redfin bullies were PIT tagged within the reach and monitored during day and night surveys in 2008 with a portable PIT monitoring system. Of these, 72 % were detected at least once and 64 % were detected 5 times or more within the study reach. Univariate analyses showed that redfin bullies utilized microhabitats that had larger substrate particles and more interstitial refuge spaces compared with all microhabitats available in the reach. During the day, redfin bullies were found in areas with larger substrates than areas where they were found at night. No differences in microhabitat use were found regarding gender, body size or season. Multivariate analysis revealed four macrohabitat types and showed that redfin bullies used deeper, complex macrohabitats during the day, then spread out to occupy all available macrohabitats at night. These findings have implications for river managers trying to cope with increasing anthropogenic impacts such as sedimentation.  相似文献

Finding practical ways to robustly estimate abundance or density trends in threatened species is a key facet for effective conservation management. Further identifying less expensive monitoring methods that provide adequate data for robust population density estimates can facilitate increased investment into other conservation initiatives needed for species recovery. Here we evaluated and compared inference-and cost-effectiveness criteria for three field monitoring-density estimation protocols to improve conservation activities for the threatened Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis). We undertook line-transect counts, cage trapping and camera monitoring surveys for Komodo dragons at 11 sites within protected areas in Eastern Indonesia to collect data to estimate density using distance sampling methods or the Royle–Nichols abundance induced heterogeneity model. Distance sampling estimates were considered poor due to large confidence intervals, a high coefficient of variation and that false absences were obtained in 45 % of sites where other monitoring methods detected lizards present. The Royle–Nichols model using presence/absence data obtained from cage trapping and camera monitoring produced highly correlated density estimates, obtained similar measures of precision and recorded no false absences in data collation. However because costs associated with camera monitoring were considerably less than cage trapping methods, albeit marginally more expensive than distance sampling, better inference from this method is advocated for ongoing population monitoring of Komodo dragons. Further the cost-savings achieved by adopting this field monitoring method could facilitate increased expenditure on alternative management strategies that could help address current declines in two Komodo dragon populations.  相似文献

Knowledge of the ecology of pre-adult stages of an organism at its species’ range margins is a prerequisite for conserving species, especially for understanding its responses to future climate changes. Largely sedentary premature life stages require specific living conditions within a relatively small area. Such conditions are created by vegetation structure heterogeneity and a microclimate gradient, generated by varying microtopography. We investigated the microhabitat selection patterns of egg-laying females and overwintering caterpillars of peatland butterfly Coenonympha tullia relative to vegetation composition, water quantity and microclimatic conditions across microtopographic zones of transition mire at the species’ southern range margin. We showed that (1) small-scale variability in mire microtopography determines oviposition site selection and larval presence; (2) microhabitats of pre-adult stages were largely confined to the intermediate microtopographic zone of the transition mire (flats); (3) egg-laying females and overwintered larvae preferred microsites with high coverage of main hostplants (Trichophorum alpinum, Carex lasiocarpa, C. limosa, C. panicea), and those with more humid and cooler summertime conditions than on hummocks; (4) females and larvae avoided shallow hollows permanently filled with water. The vegetation structure of flats enables the females to select spots with sufficient humidity for egg development, and allows the larvae to change their location according to suitable thermal and moisture conditions. We also discuss poor prospects for species in view of impacts of future climate changes on mire ecosystems.  相似文献

Previous investigations into the optimisation of internal plates have mostly focused on the material properties of the implant. In this work, we optimise the shape, size and placement of the plate for successfully minimising bone remodelling around the implant. A design optimisation algorithm based on strain energy density criterion, combined with the finite element analysis, has been used in this study. The main optimisation goal was to reduce this change and keep it close to the conditions of an intact femur. The results suggest that the anterolateral side of the bone would be the optimum location for the plate, as for the geometry, the optimum moves towards having a thick, wide and short plate. These important results could be directly applicable to orthopaedic surgeons treating a femur fracture with internal plates. Since the optimisation algorithm remains the same for any patient, this advancement provides the surgeon with a tool to minimise the post surgery remodelling by trying to maintain the natural structure of the bone.  相似文献

The growth of hummock Sphagnum species in bogs depends on hydrological and climatic conditions, with different hummock morphologies being found across geographical regions. We investigated how plant shade and winter snow-load regulate the growth pattern and height of Sphagnum papillosum hummocks in a cool-temperate bog in Japan. Hummocks were subjected to four treatments across 2?years (1 hummock per treatment per year): no treatment (control), snow-load-free (S), vascular plant trimming (T), and snow-load-free and vascular plant trimming in combination (S&T). Further, the effects of vascular plant cover and snow -load on the vertical growth and height of hummocks were examined. Annual growth rates of S. papillosum were higher for the control (34?C41?mm) than S&T treatment, and were intermediate for separate S and T treatments. In contrast to vascular plant-growing hummocks, vascular plant-trimmed hummocks showed a negative correlation between water-table depth (measured from the capitulum to the water-table) and Sphagnum growth. Hence, in summer, shading by vascular plants may prevent desiccation and facilitate the growth of Sphagnum. Snow-loaded hummocks were weighed down by 3?C11?cm. After snowmelt, the shoots continued to grow within the water-table depth range that allowed growth. Hence, heavy winter snow-loads may depress the surfaces of hummocks closer to the water-table, which stimulates Sphagnum growth, resulting in the recovery of hummock height. Thus, the water stress caused by summer desiccation is critical in regulating the upper limit of hummock height in bogs subject to dry summer conditions and heavy winter snowfall.  相似文献

Synanthedon vespiformis L. (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) is considered a rare insect in Sweden, discovered in 1860, with only a few observations recorded until a sex pheromone attractant became available recently. This study details a national survey conducted using pheromones as a sampling method for this species. Through pheromone trapping we captured 439 specimens in Southern Sweden at 77 sites, almost tripling the number of previously reported records for this species. The results suggest that S. vespiformis is truly a rare species with a genuinely scattered distribution, but can be locally abundant. Habitat analyses were conducted in order to test the relationship between habitat quality and the number of individuals caught. In Sweden, S. vespiformis is thought to be associated with oak hosts, but our attempts to predict its occurrence by the abundance of oaks yielded no significant relationships. We therefore suggest that sampling bias and limited knowledge on distribution may have led to the assumption that this species is primarily reliant on oaks in the northern part of its range, whereas it may in fact be polyphagous, similar to S. vespiformis found as an agricultural pest in Central and Southern Europe. We conclude that pheromones can massively enhance sampling potential for this and other rare lepidopteran species. Large-scale pheromone-based surveys provide a snapshot of true presences and absences across a considerable part of a species national distribution range, and thus for the first time provide a viable means of systematically assessing changes in distribution over time with high spatiotemporal resolution.  相似文献

Large mammalian grazers can alter the biotic and abiotic features of their environment through their impacts on vegetation. Grazing at moderate intensity has been recommended for biodiversity conservation. Few studies, however, have empirically tested the benefits of moderate grazing intensity in systems dominated by native grazers. Here we investigated the relationship between (1) density of native eastern grey kangaroos, Macropus giganteus, and grass structure, and (2) grass structure and reptiles (i.e. abundance, richness, diversity and occurrence) across 18 grassland and grassy Eucalyptus woodland properties in south-eastern Australia. There was a strong negative relationship between kangaroo density and grass structure after controlling for tree canopy cover. We therefore used grass structure as a surrogate for grazing intensity. Changes in grazing intensity (i.e. grass structure) significantly affected reptile abundance, reptile species richness, reptile species diversity, and the occurrence of several ground-dwelling reptiles. Reptile abundance, species richness and diversity were highest where grazing intensity was low. Importantly, no species of reptile was more likely to occur at high grazing intensities. Legless lizards (Delma impar, D. inornata) were more likely to be detected in areas subject to moderate grazing intensity, whereas one species (Hemiergis talbingoensis) was less likely to be detected in areas subject to intense grazing and three species (Menetia greyii, Morethia boulengeri, and Lampropholis delicata) did not appear to be affected by grazing intensity. Our data indicate that to maximize reptile abundance, species richness, species diversity, and occurrence of several individual species of reptile, managers will need to subject different areas of the landscape to moderate and low grazing intensities and limit the occurrence and extent of high grazing.  相似文献

The ability for effective, accurate and precise thermoregulation is of paramount importance for ectotherms. Sympatric lizards often partition their niche and select different microhabitats. These microhabitats, however, usually differ in their thermal conditions and lizards have to adapt their thermoregulation behavior accordingly. Here, we evaluated the impact of habitat partitioning on the thermal biology of three syntopic, congeneric lacertids (Podarcis peloponnesiacus, P. tauricus and P. muralis) from central Peloponnese, Greece. We assessed thermoregulation effectiveness (E) using the three standard thermal parameters: body (Tb), operative (Te) and preferred (Tpref) temperatures. We hypothesized that the microhabitats used by each species would differ in thermal quality. We also predicted that all species would effectively thermoregulate, as they inhabit a thermally challenging mountain habitat. As expected, the partition of the habitat had an effect on the thermoregulation of lizards since microhabitats had different thermal qualities. All three species were effective and accurate thermoregulators but one of them achieved smaller E values as a result of the lower Tb in the field. This discrepancy could be attributed to the cooler (but more benign) thermal microhabitats that this species occupies.  相似文献

Salmonella spp are a major foodborne zoonotic cause of human illness. Consumption of pork products is believed to be a major source of human salmonellosis and Salmonella control throughout the food-chain is recommended. A number of on-farm interventions have been proposed, and some have been implemented in order to try to achieve Salmonella control. In this study we utilize previously developed models describing Salmonella dynamics to investigate the potential effects of a range of these on-farm interventions. As the models indicated that the number of bacteria shed in the faeces of an infectious animal was a key factor, interventions applied within a high-shedding scenario were also analysed. From simulation of the model, the probability of infection after Salmonella exposure was found to be a key driver of Salmonella transmission. The model also highlighted that minimising physiological stress can have a large effect but only when shedding levels are not excessive. When shedding was high, weekly cleaning and disinfection was not effective in Salmonella control. However it is possible that cleaning may have an effect if conducted more often. Furthermore, separating infectious animals, shedding bacteria at a high rate, from the rest of the population was found to be able to minimise the spread of Salmonella.  相似文献

Quantifying survey completeness is a key step in designing and interpreting biodiversity assessments. To date this has only been examined either at a local scale through repetitive sampling, or across broader geographic areas through multiple survey sites. In this paper, we determine the completeness of sampling at both local and continental scales, of the phytophagous arthropod assemblage on the Neotropical shrub Parkinsonia aculeata (Leguminosae). We used survey gap analysis (SGA) to determine whether existing surveys adequately sampled the diversity of environments and geographic space covered by the plant. Within defined geographic regions, we determined survey completeness at a local scale with species accumulation curves. SGA identified the highest priority sites for future sampling in the Sonoran Desert and the Pacific Coast of South America. The arthropods sampled on P. aculeata differed significantly between seasons, highlighting the importance of including surveys throughout the year. At the local scale, surveys in most regions were estimated to have sampled <50 % of all species. Only the Mexican Gulf, following 84 samples including 902 individuals, had a reasonably complete sample of all species (more than 50 %). As in other studies, rare species will continue to be detected even after extensive surveying, and it is likely that close to 100 samples or 1,000 individuals will be needed to attain 50 % survey completeness in a region. However, if the objective is to document close “host-associations” then effort may be better directed at surveying ecologically distinct new areas rather than exhaustive sampling in existing ones. Methods such as SGA can direct such surveys, and in conjunction with species-richness estimates, can be used to assess the adequacy of existing surveys.  相似文献

Purpose

Understanding of the role of low molecular weight organic anions (OAs) in structuring rhizosphere microbial communities in situ is limited due to challenges associated with sampling. Improved techniques are needed for such studies.

Methods

This study used in situ and destructive sampling techniques and compared two exudate extraction methods [anion exchange membrane (AEM) capturing and water extraction] from rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere samples of genetically modified (GM) and control Pinus radiata D. Don trees grown in large-scale rhizotrons for ~10?months. Metabolically active soil microbial communities were analysed using rRNA-DGGE.

Results

Recovery of eight out of 12 anions was influenced by extraction methods, and in situ sampling using AEM was shown to be the most efficient method. Only minor differences were detected in OAs in root exudates collected from the GM and control trees. Significant differences in α-Proteobacterial and Pseudomonas communities were associated with the two tree lines in the topsoil at both sampling events. Additional differences in β-Proteobacterial and fungal communities between tree lines were detected in the rhizosphere using destructive sampling.

Conclusion

This study demonstrated that in situ sampling was superior to destructive sampling for the efficient collection of root exudates and analysis of associated rhizosphere microbial communities.  相似文献

Minimising phosphorus (P) feeding to dairy cows can reduce feed costs and minimise water pollution without impairing animal performance. This study aimed to determine current P feeding practices and identify the barriers to and motivators for minimising P feeding on dairy farms, using Great Britain (GB) dairy farming as an example of diverse systems. Farmers (n = 139) and feed advisers (n = 31) were involved simultaneously in independent questionnaire surveys on P feeding in dairy farms. Data on the herd size, milk yield and concentrate fed were analysed using ANOVA to investigate the effect of farm classification, region, and feed professional advice. Chi-square tests were used to investigate associations between farm characteristics and implemented P feeding and management practices. Most farmers (72%) did not know the P concentration in their lactating cow’s diet and did not commonly adopt precision P feeding practices, indicating that cows might have been offered dietary P in excess of recommended P requirement. Farmers’ tendency to feed P in excess of recommendations increased with herd size, but so did their awareness of P pollution issues and likeliness of testing manure P. However, 68% of farmers did not analyse manure P, indicating that mineral P fertiliser application rates were not adjusted accordingly, highlighting the risk of P being applied beyond crops’ requirement. Almost all farmers (96%) were willing to lower dietary P concentration but the uncertainty of P availability in feed ingredients (30%) and concerns over reduced cow fertility (22%) were primary barriers. The willingness to reduce dietary P concentrations was driven by the prospect of reducing environmental damage (28%) and feed costs (27%) and advice from their feed professionals (25%). Most farmers (70%) relied on a feed professional, and these farmers had a higher tendency to analyse their forage P. However, farmers of pasture-based systems relied less on feed professionals. Both farmers (73%) and feed advisers (68%) were unsatisfied with the amount of training on P management available. Therefore, the training on P management needs to be more available and the influence that feed professionals have over P feeding should be better utilised. Study findings demonstrate the importance of considering type of dairy farming systems when developing precision P feeding strategies and highlight the increasing importance of feed professionals in minimising P feeding.  相似文献

In-vivo hip joint contact forces (HJCF) can be estimated using computational neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) modelling. However, different neural solutions can result in different HJCF estimations. NMS model predictions are also influenced by the selection of neuromuscular parameters, which are either based on cadaveric data or calibrated to the individual. To date, the best combination of neural solution and parameter calibration to obtain plausible estimations of HJCF have not been identified. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of three electromyography (EMG)-informed neural solution modes (EMG-driven, EMG-hybrid, and EMG-assisted) and static optimisation, each using three different parameter calibrations (uncalibrated, minimise joint moments error, and minimise joint moments error and peak HJCF), on the estimation of HJCF in a healthy population (n = 23) during walking. When compared to existing in-vivo data, the EMG-assisted mode and static optimisation produced the most physiologically plausible HJCF when using a NMS model calibrated to minimise joint moments error and peak HJCF. EMG-assisted mode produced first and second peaks of 3.55 times body weight (BW) and 3.97 BW during walking; static optimisation produced 3.75 BW and 4.19 BW, respectively. However, compared to static optimisation, EMG-assisted mode generated muscle excitations closer to recorded EMG signals (average across hip muscles R2 = 0.60 ± 0.37 versus R2 = 0.12 ± 0.14). Findings suggest that the EMG-assisted mode combined with minimise joint moments error and peak HJCF calibration is preferable for the estimation of HJCF and generation of realistic load distribution across muscles.  相似文献

After inhibiting DNA synthesis in Escherichia coli, repeated cycles of chromosome replication can occur in the absence of protein synthesis. This “stable” replication requires the products of all of the known dna genes.Stable replication results from inhibiting DNA synthesis by treatment with naladixic acid, cytosine arabinoside or hydroxyurea; or by placing dnaB, dnaE or dnaG mutants at non-permissive temperatures. It also follows a “shift-up” into rich medium in which RNA and protein are synthesized more rapidly than DNA. Paradoxically, stable replication is induced also by treatment with concentrations of streptolydigin which do not inhibit DNA replication but temporarily and partially inhibit RNA and protein synthesis. During all of these treatments, some protein synthesis must occur.Stable replication is not immediately expressed after a short period of thymine starvation or streptolydigin treatment, but requires a subsequent period of protein synthesis. Once established, however, the stable replication state is permanent and will persist in the absence of protein synthesis or during normal growth.After stable replication has been determined by a period of DNA inhibition, it is possible to inactivate replication by heating dnaA, B, C, E and G temperature-sensitive mutants. However, resynthesis of these gene products in the presence of thymine and at the permissive temperature restores stable replication activity. Since restoration of activity can occur under normal growth conditions which do not induce stable replication, it was concluded that the dnaA, B, C, E and G gene products do not directly determine the stabilized character of the replication fork.A model is presented which attempts to explain the ability of different treatments to induce stable replication.  相似文献
