Considerable technological advances have been made in the automated detection of estrus in dairy cattle, but few studies have evaluated their relative performance on the same animals or assessed cow-related factors that affect their performance. Our objective was to assess the performance and reliability of three devices commercially available in France for cow estrus detection. The devices were a pedometer (PM; Afitag) and two activity meters (AM1; Heatime-RuminAct, and AM2; HeatPhone). Two algorithms were tested for AM2. We fitted 63 lactating Holstein cows with the three detectors from calving to 90 days after calving. The onset and pattern of cyclicity were monitored from 7 to 90 days postpartum measuring progesterone concentration in milk twice weekly. A total of 211 ovulations were identified. Cyclicity was classified as normal in 60% of cows (38/63). Calculated over the operating period of all the devices (179 periods of estrus), the sensitivities and positive predictive values were, respectively, 71% and 71% for PM, 62% and 84% for AM1, 61% and 67% for the first algorithm of AM2, and 62% and 87% for the second algorithm of AM2. Both activity meters had a lower sensitivity but a higher positive predictive value than the PM (P < 0.05). For all devices, the performance in estrus detection was much poorer at the first postpartum ovulation than at subsequent ovulations (P < 0.05). Lactation rank and milk production affected some devices (P < 0.05). These devices could be used to reinforce visual observations, especially after 50 days postpartum, the minimum recommended delay to insemination. However, their full benefit remains to be verified in different farming systems and taking into account the specific objectives of the dairy farmer. 相似文献

Studies based on frequent daily observations for nine months, encompassing 92 oestrous periods in 31 Murrah buffalo heifers, revealed that the vulval discharge of clear mucus in varying quantities in a recumbent animal, even in silent heat, was the most reliable single sign of heat in buffalo heifers. Of the other signs observed, wall walking (segregation) and bellowing confirmed oestrus in 83.69% and 80.43%, respectively, while placid response of the animal to the placing of palm of hand on the rump ano response to light massage of vulval lips were seen in 86.95% and 83.69%, respectively. Based upon the degree of manifestation of oestrous symptoms, intensity of oestrus was divided into four categories. Four daily observations of the animal for important symptoms of heat a few days before the expected oestrus could make oestrous detection a sure success. 相似文献

Eight adult pairs of snow leopards (Panthera uncia) were observed for one to three years in the months December through March to determine the species' social and reproductive characteristics in captivity. To statistically examine the occurrence of behaviors as a function of estrus, the observation weeks were divided into three time blocks: before estrus, estrus, and after estrus. Using percentage of scan samples as an estimate of time spent in various behaviors, 16 behaviors and combined behavior categories were examined for (1) behaviors that differentiated successfully from unsuccessfully breeding pairs, (2) sex differences in behavior, (3) significant correlations between pair members, and (4) behaviors that showed time block effects. The rationale for identifying a behavioral profile of successful breeders in snow leopards was to aid zoos in their captive management programs by increasing their knowledge of the social behavior of this species. By finding correlates to breeding success, informed decisions on whether to change partners after a certain period of time, how to group the cats, and the optimum strategy for a survival plan can be made. 相似文献

The sociosexual behavior of a free-ranging Cebuella pygmaea troop containing two adult males was studied throughout a postpartum periestrous period of its reproductive female. A clear-cut male-initiated six-day behavioral estrous period occurred from the 13th through 18th day postpartum, with a two-day peak of mating activity on the 15th and 16th days. Both adult males attempted to mate with the female, but the dominant male maintained exclusive mating access to her by guarding behavior and aggression toward the subordinate male. Estrus-related changes in the daily activity pattern included constant following of the female by the male, increased huddling and grooming between the consorts, a decrease in infant carrying, and suppression of insect foraging in the consorting male. Behaviors seen only during the periestrous period included genital presenting by the female, intensive licking and sniffing of her genitalia by the males, female-guarding by the dominant male, anogenital scent-marking on the male's body by the female, tongue protrusion and “tongue vibrating” by the male, and copulations, play chasing, and “consort walking” by the couple. Within the Callitrichidae, genital presenting and tongue vibrating in sexual context have been observed only in Cebuella. 相似文献

Successful breeding of the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) following artificial insemination was achieved at the Ueno Zoo in 2 consecutive years (1985 and 1986). The first cub, born in June 1985, unfortunately died 43 hours after birth from being crushed by the mother panda; the second cub, born in June 1986, has been growing in good health. Electroejaculation and artificial insemination procedures were performed after immobilization with diazepam (0.1 mg/kg) and ketamine HCL (4.0–5.0 mg/kg). Semen of the male panda was collected by electroejaculation using a rectal probe with a diameter of 2.0 cm and with eight rings as electrodes. Stimulation of the male was given with 3 V (30–40 mA) over a 5-sec period with 5-sec intervals. The female panda exhibited estrus between late February and early March in 1985 and also between mid-january and early February 1986. Increased excretion of urinary total estrogen showed coincidentally at maximum behavioral estrus, and a gradual rise of pregnanediol level was followed by artificial insemination. The gestational length for the first pregnancy was 110 days and that of the second 121 days. 相似文献

Limiting opportunities for captive nonhuman primates (NHPs) to express species-specific social behaviors may disrupt the adaptive drive for social companionship and may lead to increases in coping behaviors and inactivity. While captive NHPs show improved welfare when moving to pair-housing from single-housing, the impact of daily separation of pair-mates, as is implemented in intermittent pair-housing, is not fully understood. We compared behavioral indices of welfare exhibited by adult female rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in two conditions: (1) intermittent pair-housing, involving daily overnight separation of pair-mates, and (2) continuous pair-housing, involving little separation of pair-mates. A within-subjects study design tested two groups of females experiencing both pairing conditions in an alternate order, switching either from continuous to intermittent pair-housing, or from intermittent to continuous pair-housing. Behavioral observations, recording activity state, self-directed, abnormal, and social behaviors, were conducted at midday when all females were paired, and in the afternoon when intermittent pairs were separated. Females exhibited higher levels of inactivity and self-directed behavior when separated due to intermittent pair-housing in comparison to continuous pair-housing. In addition, intermittently paired females showed higher levels of grooming and other types of affiliation when paired, than during the same time frame when they were continuously paired. These results suggest that females in the continuous presence of a social partner experience improved levels of activity and do not need to elevate levels of behavioral coping mechanisms (e.g., self-scratching, increased affiliation) as they receive the benefits associated with social companionship consistently throughout the day. Overall, this study provides the first evidence that continuous pair-housing affords better welfare than intermittent pair-housing in adult female rhesus macaques. Pair-housing options, such as continuous pairing, that reduce reliance on behavioral coping mechanisms and promote adaptive social behavior throughout the entirety of the day should be prioritized over husbandry care scheduled for convenience. 相似文献

This study is a preliminary report on the time allocated to various activities by female wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) during their sexual cycle. Cycling females with maximal tumescence (estrous females) tended to spend more time moving than cycling females with quiescent sexual skin (anestrous females). Although there was no statistically significant decrease in any specific activity that corresponded to the increase in time spent moving, feeding time did decrease in four of the five females. The frequency of approach by females toward males and the frequency of approach by males toward females significantly increased when females were in estrus. Direct aggression by males occurred more frequently toward estrous females than toward anestrous females. The copulation frequency and the frequency of approach to males was not significantly correlated with the increase in time spent moving. There was a high but not significant correlation between the time spent moving and the frequency of direct aggression by males toward females. Mating effort, feeding competition, male aggression, and other possible reasons that might explain the increase in moving time are discussed. Am. J. Macrophytes were monitored in 48 headwater rivers in Flanders (Belgium). Only 26 sites had macrophyte vegetation, which was
used to calculate five different indices and scores. These indices originated from UK, France, Czech Republic and Germany.
Macrophytes were significantly correlated with a number of habitat variables, such as transect size, river width, slope, Huet
zonation, distance to source, shadowing and average depth. For the substrate there were significant negative correlations
with the fine particle sizes and a positive correlation with the coarse particles. A multivariate analysis of the macrophytes

Data were collected on reproductive, health and production events in 45 dairy herds in southwestern and eastern Ontario, Canada, from July 1990 to July 1993. Mean and median days in milk at first estrus, at first service, and at conception were 85.1 and 83.9, 94.0 and 88.9, and 126.3 and 115.5 d, respectively. The mean estrus detection rate was 48.3%, with a minimum of 28.4% and a maximum of 64.2%. The mean overall conception rate was 46.7%, with a minimum of 29.8% and a maximum of 70.7%. The most commonly used used therapeutic agents were GnRH (11.5% lactational incidence risk) and PG (13.1% lactational incidence risk). Estrus management accounted for the largest portion of PG use in the herds studied (69.4%). Results of a two sample t-test indicated no significant difference in reproductive performance among herds housed in free-stall compared with those housed in tie-stall barns. Multivariate linear regression models of 3 reproductive performance measures indicated that cows with ovarian cysts and/or increased peak milk production had significantly longer calving-to-first estrus and calving-to-conception intervals as well as lower conception rates than average producing cows without cysts. Cows with metritis were found to have significantly shorter calving-to-conception intervals but no detectable difference in conception rate or calving-to-first estrus interval than their herdmates. As lactation number increased reproductive performance improved. Cows that were observed in estrus earlier conceived earlier. Animals receiving uterine infusions had significantly longer calving-to-conception intervals and lower conception rates than their herdmates. There was no detectable difference in reproductive performance for cows treated with GnRH or PG compared with the nontreated cows. An increased estrus detection rate was associated with shorter calving-to-conception intervals and lower conception rates. Based on the range of performance in the study herds, the factors with the greatest potential influence on calving-to-conception interval in the average herd were the estrus detection rate and conception rate. 相似文献

A synchronization treatment was initiated when each of 1227 heifers (four trials) was tailpainted. The tailpaint was sprayed with an aerosol raddle at the end of the treatment period. The heifers were in herds of 20 to 279 animals. Each herd was observed for estrus at selected post treatment intervals. A heifer was considered to be (or to have been) in estrus when the raddle was rubbed off. In three of the trials, animals which had the raddle removed were inseminated at 48h following the end of the synchronization treatment. The tailpaint of an inseminated animal was scored from 0 (less than 10% of the paint remained) to 5 (more than 90% of the paint remained) and was then reraddled with a second color. The detection-insemination sequence was always repeated at 72 and 96h, and sometimes at 120h. Animals which had been previously inseminated, but then had paint scores reduced by at least 2 units were reinseminated 24h later. Over the four trials, 94.5% of the heifers were detected in estrus through the use of the tailpaint and raddle system. The remaining 67 animals included only 10 (0.8%) which had ovulated without being detected in estrus. The reinsemination rate on consecutive days was 11.3% and was highest among animals that had a tailpaint score of 4 or 5 at 48h. The proportion of animals detected in estrus at selected posttreatment intervals varied with the different synchronization treatments used within one herd, or with the same treatment used in different herds. The combination of tailpaint, raddling, tailpaint scoring and reraddling is a simple sequence which can be effectively used to detect estrus among heifers synchronized in research or commercial herds. 相似文献

We herein report a novel, reliable and inexpensive method for detecting esophageal cancer using blood plasma resonance Raman spectroscopy combined with multivariate analysis methods. The blood plasma samples were divided into late stage cancer group (n = 164), early stage cancer group (n = 35) and normal group (n = 135) based on clinical pathological diagnosis. Using a specially designed quartz capillary tube as sample holder, we obtained higher quality resonance Raman spectra of blood plasma than existing method. The study demonstrated that the carotenoids levels in blood plasma were reduced in esophageal cancer patients. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (and 95% confidence interval) calculated by wavenumber selection and principal component analysis combined with linear discriminant analysis (PC-LDA) algorithm were 0.894 (0.858-0.929), 0.901 (0.841-0.960) and 0.871 (0.799-0.942) for differentiating late cancer from normal, late cancer from early cancer, and early cancer from normal respectively. The contribution from the two carotenoids wavenumber regions of 1155 and 1515 cm−1 were more than 84.2%. The results show that the plasma carotenoids could be a potential biomarker for screening esophageal cancer using resonance Raman spectroscopy combined with wavenumber selection and PC-LDA algorithms. 相似文献

Quantitative trait loci (QTL) influencing the weight of abdominal fat (AF) and of breast muscle (BM) were detected on chicken chromosome 5 (GGA5) using two successive F2 crosses between two divergently selected 'Fat' and 'Lean' INRA broiler lines. Based on these results, the aim of the present study was to identify the number, location and effects of these putative QTL by performing multitrait and multi-QTL analyses of the whole available data set. Data concerned 1186 F2 offspring produced by 10 F1 sires and 85 F1 dams. AF and BM traits were measured on F2 animals at slaughter, at 8 (first cross) or 9 (second cross) weeks of age. The F0 , F1 and F2 birds were genotyped for 11 microsatellite markers evenly spaced along GGA5. Before QTL detection, phenotypes were adjusted for the fixed effects of sex, F2 design, hatching group within the design, and for body weight as a covariable. Univariate analyses confirmed the QTL segregation for AF and BM on GGA5 in male offspring, but not in female offspring. Analyses of male offspring data using multitrait and linked-QTL models led us to conclude the presence of two QTL on the distal part of GGA5, each controlling one trait. Linked QTL models were applied after correction of phenotypic values for the effects of these distal QTL. Several QTL for AF and BM were then discovered in the central region of GGA5, splitting one large QTL region for AF into several distinct QTL. Neither the 'Fat' nor the 'Lean' line appeared to be fixed for any QTL genotype. These results have important implications for prospective fine mapping studies and for the identification of underlying genes and causal mutations. 相似文献

The use of prerecorded data to remotely assess the herd welfare status is a promising approach to reduce the need for costly and time-consuming on-farm welfare assessments. Therefore, the objective of this study was to validate the Herd Status Index, an index developed based on Dairy Herd Improvement data from Canada, to remotely evaluate the welfare status of dairy herds. Herd-level prevalence of five animal-based welfare outcomes, measured once on 2 986 Quebec – Canada dairy herds between 2016 and 2019, were used to generate clusters with different welfare status using the algorithm partitioning around medoids. Dairy Herd Improvement data from 12 months prior to the welfare assessment were extracted and used to calculate the Herd Status Index. A linear model was used to carry out comparisons between clusters. Three stable clusters were found to best describe the data. Cluster two had the best overall welfare status since it had the lowest prevalence of all welfare issues while cluster three had the highest prevalence of most welfare issues, with the exception for the prevalence of neck lesions that was not different than cluster one. Cluster one had an overall intermediate welfare status. The Herd Status Index was higher (i.e., indicating a good welfare status) on cluster two compared to cluster three, but neither cluster three nor two differed to cluster one. In its current format, the Herd Status Index has a weak potential to identify herds with varying prevalence of welfare issues and it requires further improvements before it could be used to accurately assess the welfare status of the herds. 相似文献

Twelve Murrah buffaloes were selected from the institute herd and acoustic features like call duration, amplitude, total energy, mean pitch, mean intensity, formants (F1, F2, F3, F4, and F5), and N/H (Noise to Harmonic) ratio were analyzed. Call duration was significantly higher on day of estrus (1.52 ± 0.07 s) and proestrus (1.44 ± 0.07 s) than in metestrus (1.241 ± 0.04 s) and diestrus stages (0.981 ± 0.05 s). Total energy (0.121 ± 0.01 P2s), mean pitch (226.67 ± 14.11 Hz), maximum amplitude (0.959 ± 0.01 P), and mean intensity (85.05 ± 0.26 dB) was more (p < 0.05) in proestrus than in other stages. F1 (1131.94 ± 11.85 Hz) and F5 formants (6567.74 ± 12.62 Hz) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) during estrus, while F2 (2238.46 ± 26.53 Hz), F3 (3435.00 ± 19.33 Hz), and F4 formants (5127.71 ± 25.90 Hz) were higher (p < 0.05) in proestrus in comparison to other stages of estrous cycle. The identified acoustic features of voice in Murrah buffaloes were signficantly different in various stages of estrous cycle. Herd mobility is a tool for managing environmental variability in African pastoral systems. This study examines the monthly mobility patterns of 24 herds over six years in the 20,000 ha communal area of Paulshoek, Namaqualand, and assesses the social, economic, and ecological factors affecting the livestock movement of individual herds and all herds combined. When the mobility pattern of all herds was considered, no seasonal or between-year differences in response to rainfall were evident. An analysis of individual herd mobility patterns showed that half of the herds were relatively sedentary over the study period while the other half were regularly mobile. Although herders used mobility to manage their herds in the unpredictable semiarid environment, their daily decisions were often made in response to their social, economic, or personal situations. There was no significant difference in livestock production between herding strategies, but sedentary herders had a greater localized impact on the rangeland than mobile herders. Our analysis suggests that non-environmental factors play a significant role in herd mobility and may consequently affect the efficiency of livestock production and environmental management. 相似文献

Finding ways of increasing the efficiency of production systems is a key issue of sustainability. System efficiency is based on long-term individual efficiency, which is highly variable and management driven. To study the effects of management on herd and individual efficiency, we developed the model simulation of goat herd management (SIGHMA). This dynamic model is individual-based and represents the interactions between technical operations (relative to replacement, reproduction and feeding) and individual biological processes (performance dynamics based on energy partitioning and production potential). It simulates outputs at both herd and goat levels over 20 years. A farmer's production project (i.e. a targeted milk production pattern) is represented by configuring the herd into female groups reflecting the organisation of kidding periods. Each group is managed by discrete events applying decision rules to simulate the carrying out of technical operations. The animal level is represented by a set of individual goat models. Each model simulates a goat's biological dynamics through its productive life. It integrates the variability of biological responses driven by genetic scaling parameters (milk production potential and mature body weight), by the regulations of energy partitioning among physiological functions and by responses to diet energy defined by the feeding strategy. A sensitivity analysis shows that herd efficiency was mainly affected by feeding management and to a lesser extent by the herd production potential. The same effects were observed on herd milk feed costs with an even lower difference between production potential and feeding management. SIGHMA was used in a virtual experiment to observe the effects of feeding strategies on herd and individual performances. We found that overfeeding led to a herd production increase and a feed cost decrease. However, this apparent increase in efficiency at the herd level (as feed cost decreased) was related to goats that had directed energy towards body reserves. Such a process is not efficient as far as feed conversion is concerned. The underfeeding strategy led to production decrease and to a slight feed cost decrease. This apparent increase in efficiency was related to goats that had mobilised their reserves to sustain production. Our results highlight the interest of using SIGHMA to study the underlying processes affecting herd performance and analyse the role of individual variability regarding herd response to management. It opens perspectives to further quantify the link between individual variability, herd performance and management and thus further our understanding of livestock farming systems. 相似文献

Technologies capable of monitoring product quality attributes and process parameters in real time are becoming popular due to the endorsement of regulatory agencies and also to support the agile development of biotherapeutic pipelines. The utility of vibrational spectroscopic techniques such as Fourier transform mid-infrared (Mid-IR) and multivariate data analysis (MVDA) models allows the prediction of multiple critical attributes simultaneously in real time. This study reports the use of Mid-IR and MVDA model sensors for monitoring of multiple attributes (excipients and protein concentrations) in real time (measurement frequency of every 40 s) at ultrafiltration and diafiltration (UF/DF) unit operation of biologics manufacturing. The platform features integration of fiber optic Mid-IR probe sensors to UF/DF set up at the bulk solution and through a flow cell at the retentate line followed by automated Mid-IR data piping into a process monitoring software platform with pre-loaded partial least square regression (PLS) chemometric models. Data visualization infrastructure is also built-in to the platform so that upon automated PLS prediction of excipients and protein concentrations, the results were projected in a graphical or numerical format in real time. The Mid-IR predicted concentrations of excipients and protein show excellent correlation with the offline measurements by traditional analytical methods. Absolute percent difference values between Mid-IR predicted results and offline reference assay results were ≤5% across all the excipients and the protein of interest; which shows a great promise as a reliable process analytical technology tool. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to identify efficient sampling methods for establishing accurate activity budgets for zoo animals. Seven cotton‐top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) from two zoos were videotaped for multiple 90 min sessions, 3 to 4 days per week for 12 weeks. An activity budget was constructed for each animal using a continuous sampling method to analyze 30 hr of video recording of each animal. These master datasets, reflecting actual behavior, were re‐sampled using interval sampling lengths of 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 20 min, and cluster sampling protocols (periodic sessions of continuous sampling) of 10 min×3, 15 min×2, 20 min×1, 15 min×1 and 10 min×1 (min×repetitions/90 min sample period) to construct additional activity budgets for each animal. The Canberra similarity index was used to determine the statistical relationship between these activity budgets and those based on the master datasets. As interval length increased, there was a consequent decrease in the accuracy of the associated activity budgets as compared with the master dataset. No cluster sampling protocols yielded activity budgets as accurate as the four shortest interval lengths, but all cluster sampling protocols were more accurate than the three longest interval lengths. All the tested protocols varied in ability to accurately portray animal behavior. Overall, interval sampling provided superior behavioral representations at lower observer input.
