The phytoplankton of Lake Kinneret, a warm monomictic lake,is dominated by a Pyrrhophyta-Chlorophyta assemblage. Four stagesof succession of planktonic algae occur in the lake, startingwith thermal and chemical destratification and ending with stratification. The index of diversity of the phytoplankton communities is highduring the destratification and mixed periods. The index reachesminimal values during late summer, when the ecosystem is subjectto strong physical, chemical and biological stresses. The diversityin Lake Kinneret increases with the increase in nutrients andnot with the increase in temperature. During most of the year, the nanoplanktonic forms are in greaternumbers than the netplankton species. This fact is correlatedwith the amounts of available nutrients in the lake. The annual averages of the wet autotrophic biomass in Lake Kinneretare very high in comparison with other warm lakes. The contributionof the nanoplanktonic species to the total algal biomass isvery small during the Peridinium bloom, but represents approximatelyhalf of the total algal biomass during the rest of the year. The concentration of nutrients in the water, together with theadverse competitive effect of Peridinium on other algae, areto a large extent responsible for the composition, successionand abundance of the phytoplankton assemblages in Lake Kinneret.  相似文献

Population densities, migrations and food composition of Echinogammarus veneris in Lake Kinneret were studied during march–September 1976. Migrations are affected by changes of water level and littoral currents. Peridinium was abundant in the gut content during its blooming period in the lake while cladocerans, benthic copepods, rotifers and other algae were abundantly found in other months. Metabolic parameters that were calculated for the gammarid population indicated that its contribution to the carbon-flow system in Lake Kinneret is negligible in comparison with nematodes, molluscans or planktonic copepods and cladocerans.  相似文献

Temporal changes of biomass and dominant species in benthic algal communities were investigated in a littoral sand-beach zone in the north basin of Lake Biwa from December 1999 to September 2000. Chlorophyll-a amounts of benthic algal communities per unit area of the sandy sediments rapidly increased from late April to June. Increases in biomass of the benthic algal communities are considered to result from the propagation of filamentous green algae Oedogonium sp. and Spirogyra sp. The cell numbers of filamentous green algae and chlorophyll-a amounts of benthic algal communities at depths of 30 and 50cm at a station protected by a breakwater in May were significantly higher than those of a station exposed directly to wave activity. Thus, the biomass accumulation of the benthic algal communities seems to be regulated strongly by wave disturbance. The development of filamentous green algae may contribute to the increase in biomass of the benthic algal community and to the changes in seasonal patterns of biomass in the sand-beach zone of Lake Biwa. We consider that the development of the filamentous green algal community in the littoral zone of Lake Biwa is the result of eutrophication.  相似文献

The phytoplankton of the River Lujan (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was studied for a period of 18 months, together with physical and chemical variables, in relation to a pollution gradient. 167 taxa were recorded within a seasonal succession characterized by dominance of diatoms with a brief summer green algae facies. A combination of several biotic indices and multivariate analysis was employed to assess the impact of pollution on the phytoplankton community. The biotic indices used were species diversity and richness, algal quotients (green algae/diatom ratio, Centrales/Pennales ratio) and the SD succession rate index. Multivariate procedures included cluster analysis and ordination by PCA of both species and samples, stepwise discriminant analysis and multiple discriminant analysis of variance (MANOVA). Results indicate that community dynamism is attenuated at the more polluted sites, concomitant with an increased predominance of a broad-tolerance algal assemblage, co-dominated by Cyclotella meneghiniana and Nitzschia stagnorum. The changes in the community structure and dynamics described herein involved alterations in the distribution and relative proportions of the algae, rather than modifications in the basic species composition. These changes may not be readily detectable by methods which over-simplify the ecological information, such as systems of indicator species and biotic indices, designed to assess the degree of pollution. The suitability of multivariate analysis and biotic indices in river phytoplankton studies is further discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis Gut contents of 294 individuals ofTor canis from Lake Kinneret (Israel), sampled throughout a full year indicated a wide trophic spectrum including 52 identified animal and plant species. Nevertheless a major part of ingested biomass (5.7 g per fish) was due to the Kinneret sardine (Mirogrex sp.). The biomass of other ingested organisms was relatively low (0.01–0.8 g per fish) consisting of planktonic organisms, zoobenthos, macrophytes and a few others. The role ofT. canis in the Kinneret ecosystem and management design is discussed.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the periphyton on the trunks of flooded trees in the Pawmpawm arm of the Volta Lake are reported. Of the three algal groups forming the periphyton, the quantitatively most important species are in such genera as Navicula, Synedra and Melosira (diatoms), Spirogyra, Oedogonium and Stigeoclonium (green algae), and Oscillatoria and Anabaena (blue-green algae). The fluctuations in species diversity and cell numbers are attributed to changes in the nutrient status of the lake water and lake level.  相似文献

Eukaryotic picoplankton was isolated from Lake Kinneret, Israel. This green picoplankton is spheroidal or ovoidal in shape. The cell wall has a network of ribs on its surface. The chloroplast is cup- or mantel-shaped without a pyrenoid. The morphology and cellular structure of this autosporic alga is identical with Mychonastes homosphaera (Skuja) Kalina et Pun?ochá?ová. The phylogenetic tree based on 18S ribo-somal RNA gene sequence data showed that M. homosphaera is placed in the Chlorophyceae and located at the base of a branch leading to the other algae possessing directly opposed orientation of the flagellar apparatus.  相似文献

在气候变化和人类活动的双重影响下,近年来鄱阳湖流域极端水文事件频发,洲滩湿地生态过程也相应发生变化,开展鄱阳湖水文过程变化与植被演替过程的交互作用研究十分必要。选择鄱阳湖典型洲滩植物灰化薹草(Carex cinerascens)为研究对象,通过地下水位控制模拟试验,设置地下水位埋深10、20、40、80、120cm等5个处理,系统探讨了地下水位埋深对鄱阳湖典型湿地植物灰化薹草生长与种群演变的影响。研究结果表明:春季,不同地下水位对灰化薹草种群的密度和群落多样性影响不显著;夏季,不同地下水位对灰化薹草的密度、种群多样性以及藜蒿和灰化薹草的高度比影响显著。地下水位埋深10cm更适宜灰化薹草植株的生长与群落结构的稳定,而地下水位埋深低于80cm,尤其是低于120cm可能会导致灰化薹草种群的退化与演替。研究结果对于揭示地下水位波动作用下鄱阳湖湿地植被种群发生的短期变化和长期演变趋势具有重要的指示意义。  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of the freshwater piscivore, Clarias gariepinus (C. lazera) (C & V 1840) was studied over two periods: 1973–1975 and 1981–1982, in Lake Kinneret (Israel). The total number of fish analysed was 264 and their sizes (SL) and weights varied between 238 and 830 mm (146 to 5728 g). More than fifty species of plants and animals from the plankton, benthos and nekton of Lake Kinneret were identified in the intestines of C. gariepinus. Preyed fish were the most abundant food component (81%) and constituted the highest biomass, with Mirogrex terraesanctae representing the majority (although other species were also found). The potential impact of piscivory in the Kinneret ecosystem is considered.  相似文献

Summary The effects of herbivorous microcrustaceans on algal succession and diversity were studied in replicated 200 ml freshwater microcosms. Three different experiments were conducted. Two experiments used laboratory microcosms in growth chambers. Rotenone was used to kill the microcrustaceans in one-half of the cultures. Diversity (H') and succession were monitored over a 60 day period. The third experiment used similar microcosms, but they were kept out of doors. In this experiment, microcrustaceans became extinct in some cultures because of a mechanical disturbance. In all three experiments, succession from a community dominated by green algae to one dominated by blue-green algae was significantly slower when microcrustaceans were present. Diversity was higher in grazed cultures at some times during succession, but not at all times. The dynamics of diversity during succession appear to be governed principally by the change in the relative frequency or green and blue-green algae, rather than by the dynamics of individual species. Nutrient recycling by the microcrustaceans may favor green algae, partially mitigating mortality on green algae due to grazing pressure.  相似文献

Abstract

The Lower Jordan River stretches from the outlet of Lake Kinneret till the Dead Sea and is one of the most polluted rivers in Israel. In order to estimate the aquatic ecosystem of the northern part of the Lower Jordan River we used algal communities as biological indicators in the rainy and dry seasons of 2005 and 2007. We found 152 species of algae and cyanoprokaryotes from seven taxonomic divisions, which were mostly dominated by diatoms accompanied by the greens, blue‐greens and euglenoids. The xanthophycean species Heterococcus viridis, a red freshwater alga Audouinella hermannii, and a cyanobacterium Microcrocis marina were found for the first time in Israel. In the ecological analysis we revealed groups of freshwater algae according to pH, salinity, and saprobity as well as temperature, streaming and oxygenation. Quantitative information on the relationship between species and environmental variables was obtained using CCA analysis, emphasizing the major seasonal parameters. The extent of association of species with the environmental variables vector allowed us to determine the bio‐sensors and bio‐indicators, which may be relevant for monitoring of pollutants in the Lower Jordan River. The combination of bio‐indicational methods and statistics were effective in the determination of the main factors influencing algal diversity, as well as in revealing the indicators or bio‐sensing species for the most important environmental variables.  相似文献

Observations were made on the development and distribution of phytoperiphyton communities in 66 lake-river systems in NW Russia from Lake Ladoga to the Barents Sea. In total, 130 genera and 648 species were identified from different substrates, belonging to Cyanophyta (19.1%), Bacillariophyta (59.6%), Chlorophyta (18.7%), and algae from other orders (2.6%). In all streams diatoms dominated by species richness, but they were surpassed by green algae in terms of biomass. The green algae ranged from small planktonic forms to large filamentous species and produced easily visible algal communities. Among the planktonic forms the desmids were the most diverse group. They occurred in attached communities of all rivers and, while never abundant, were widespread. The attached community’s biomass was dominated by green algae. Among these, the filamentous algae Mougeotia sp., Oedogonium sp., Zygnema sp., Spirogyra sp. and Ulothrix zonata exhibited mass development in streams. Their distribution was patchy in the basin, with a total cover varying from less than 1% to 90% of the stream bottom. In some river stretches the diversity and predominance of green algae could be due, in part, to poorly developed riparian canopies. The term periphyton adopted here follows the definition of Odum (1971): “Assemblages which include both plant and animal organisms growing attached to submerged objects”. The prefix phyto- is added to indicate that of the whole biocoenoses only phototrophs are considered in this study. The Waitaki River system in the South Island of New Zealand includes three large glacially-formed headwater lakes, Tekapo, Pukaki and Ohau, which drain into the manmade Lake Benmore. Phytoplankton periodicity was followed from December 1975 to January 1980 as part of a study investigating possible changes in these lakes as a consequence of hydroelectric development. The phytoplankton was highly dominated by diatoms, e.g., Diatoma elongatum, Cyclotella stelligera, Asterionella formosa, and Synedra acus, but in lakes Ohau and Benmore populations of green algae occasionally developed. In all four lakes seasonal phytoplankton periodicity was observed with maximum biomass in spring and summer. In Lake Tekapo, the first lake in the chain, maximum biomass did not exceed 300 mg m–3, but in the very turbid Lake Pukaki the maximum summer biomass ranged between 300 and 800 mg m–3. In Lake Ohau, the least turbid lake, maximum biomass was around 1 000 mg m–3. In the newly created Lake Benmore periodicity was less evident and summer maxima reached over 1 500 mg m–3. The phytoplankton periodicity in these lakes is greatly influenced by seasonal patterns of turbidity from inflowing glacial silt.  相似文献

Summary The Israeli freshwater snail Theodoxus jordani exhibits high variability both in shell colour and shell pattern.In most localities in Israel, more than 80% of the snails are black regardless of the colour of their background. Within Lake Kinneret, however, there is a significant association between the relative frequency of dark patterned shells and the distribution of a black (basalt) background.Predators of jordani include the fishes Barbus longiceps, Blennius fluviatilis, and the crab Potamon potamon. In Israel, the former two are limited in their distribution to the Kinneret. Thus, the distribution of cryptic variants of the snail is positively correlated to the distribution of some of its predators.Beyond the Kinneret, shells are black probably as a result of selection by the injurious effects of ultraviolet radiation. Within the Kinneret, snails can manage without an anti-radiation shield probably because the penetration of UV light into the water is considerably reduced, due to the daily summer storms and to the seasonal bloom of unicellular algae.Apparently, then, outside the Kinneret selective forces for crypsis are partly relaxed and their effects overidden by selective pressures for solar radiation devices; within the Kinnertt, selective pressures for anti-radiation devices are partly reduced and their effects overridden by selective pressures for crypsis.  相似文献

Interactions between the larvae of Mirogrex terraesanctae (Steinitz, 1952) in Lake Kinneret, Israel, and their zooplankton prey were studied experimentally. Prey species preference and size selectivities were measured. Larvae were hatched in the lab from eggs collected in the field, and fed different food items in various concentrations. The food items included lake zooplankton, algae, and commercial pellets. It was shown that small, first feeding larvae (7–8.5 mm SL) prefer small bodied zooplankters (< 180 µ). The effect of these food sources on larval growth was measured. It was found that larval Mirogrex grew at a higher rate when fed zooplankton prey sized from 63 µ–250 µ. Food items smaller than 63 µ, larger than 250 µ and Scenedesmus sp., produced less than optimal growth rates. The importance of Mirogrex feeding habits and their potential influence on the Kinneret ecosystem is considered.  相似文献

The food composition of the fingerlings (13–41 mm TL) of Mirogrex terraesanctae terraesanctae was studied on specimen collected at four stations in Lake Kinneret. The fingerling feed mostly on pelagic zooplankters and zoobenthic forms whereas algae were found in the intestines in low biomass. The number of zooplankton organisms in the guts of the fingerling that were sampled during June–August was higher by 234% than in fingerlings that were sampled during March–April. The role of sardines fry in the Kinneret ecosystem is discussed.  相似文献

The distribution, body composition, growth rate, and population structure of Unio terminalis were measured at different sites of Lake Kinneret (Israel). Maximum clam density was found on the muddy sand between 0.3–6 m depth. Clams were most abundant in the River Jordan inlet zone, where they showed the highest growth rate. This was probably related to both highest food availability and the highest density of fish hosting Unio glochidia in this area. U. terminalis in Lake Kinneret has a more massive shell and ash content as compared with the European Unio species. The annual P/B ratios of U. terminalis populations at different sites were similar and ranged within 0.17–0.18. The computated filtration capacity and energetic budget permit the assumption that the U. terminalis population plays a substantial role in removal of organic particles from the water in the Kinneret shallow inshore zone (up to 15 m depth), and in nutrient recycling.  相似文献

Long-term (1969–2002) data record of biomass distribution of rotifers in Lake Kinneret is combined with previously published information on their metabolic activity and newly calculated population dynamics parameters to synthesize a model of their seasonal dynamics in Lake Kinneret. Nineteen rotifer species were recorded in routine samples collected in Lake Kinneret (Israel) in 7 offshore (deeper than 5 m), stations, at 12 discrete depths during 1969–2002. Organisms were sorted and counted (including external egg carrying females), biomass was measured and calculated for the entire lake stock (gw.w m−2; mg l−1). Rates of grazing, respiration and production were measured experimentally at three different temperature ranges. Results were extrapolated to the lake community for months with similar temperatures. Rotifera comprised 7% of total zooplankton biomass in Lake Kinneret whilst Cladocera and Copepoda 58 and 35% respectively. Rotifers were found to be more abundant during December–June and decline in summer months. Monthly (1969–2001) means indicated total grazing capacity of rotifers as 11%, respiration as 9% and production as 3.7% of the total zooplankton metabolic activity. Positive relations were indicated between rotifer and small bodied cladoceran numerical concentrations. Population growth models suggest that rotifers are not food limited in Lake Kinneret but that fish predation plays an important role in regulating abundance in spring-summer and fall.  相似文献

The natural food ofOreochromis niloticus in Lake Awasa was studied from the stomach contents of 10 fish measuring 18–32 cm (standard length) monthly from August 1984 to April 1986.Chroococcus, Oscillatoria andBotryococcus were found to be important food items in the diet. Animal foods were observed on rare occasions and these were mainly Rotifera. Blue-green algae as a group contribute about 28.1% of the ash free dry weight (AFDW) whereas diatoms and green algae (excludingBotryococcus) make 2.31% and 2.39% of AFDW, respectively.Botryococcus, detritus and other algae comprised 67.2% of AFDW and it was suspected that more than half of this was contributed byBotryococcus. Blue-green algae, which were especially abundant in the diet during the dry season, November–February, are nutritionally most important. Seasonal variation in algal species composition could influence the quality of food ingested by the fish.  相似文献

The intracellular concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and chlorophyll a of phytoplankton and zooplankton in Lake Kinneret were determined from 1969 to 1973. The ratios C:P, C:N, chlorophyll a:P, chlorophyll a:N of the algae showed fluctuations which could be related to the nutrient conditions that influence the annual pattern of phytoplankton development, especially in respect to the dinoflagellate bloom of Peridinium cinctum (OFM) Ehr. f. westii (Lemm.) Lef. Relatively high intracellurar P values at the start of the bloom indicated adequate availability of this nutrient and luxury consumption over a short period of time. Later, Peridinium continued to grow despite unusually high C:P ratios (> 300:1). In most years, phosphorus may have eventually limited growth, however, in 1970, the bloom censed despite comparatively high intracellular P concentrations. These observations, together with supplementary evidence from nutrient addition experiments and determinations of specific alkaline phosphatase levels, indicated that, for most of the growth phase of the bloom, Peridinium cells were not directly limited by P. The decline of the bloom usually, but not always (e.g., in 1970), was marked by very high C:P ratios. Thus, a shortage of P may often be a contributory factor to the cessation of the Peridinium bloom and may be limiting phytoplankton growth in the fall. Over the years 1969–73, possibly due to an overall drop in salinity, there appears to be a trend to lower levels of biologically bound phosphorus in Lake Kinneret, without a concomitant decrease in carbon biomass.  相似文献
